    5 out of 5 stars Excellent examples.......2007-09-19

This book gives practical, specific advice on improving your landscape painting technique. I especially like the illustrations. The paintings are beautiful and "fresh." Not your average landscapes. They inspired me.

    4 out of 5 stars shadows.......2007-09-10

Great book Good information but Kevin seems to lose his separation of the lights and shadows in some of his demos in the back of the book He talks about it but then shadows start getting to light in value and too much detail. This could be from the reproductions of his painting

3 out of 5 stars Not as much "color and light" in this one........2007-08-11

Having read this author's previous book on putting color and light in your paintings, I was a little disappointed with this one---I expected more. The book was well organized, (had, once again, pages of stuff about selecting your brushes, etc.); the author set forth his view of a limited palette, and said that you needed to be excited about your painting---but I don't believe that he was excited when he wrote this. If he was, he didn't convey it well. Had a number of exercises, some reasonable, others only for the wealthy (use an entire tube of cadmium red light on your painting (That is, really thick!)

Anyway, having read through the book, I would not buy this book again --- that's the bottom line.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful instruction for the Plein-Air artist........2007-06-27

Kevin Macpherson gives thorough instructions in his book from colors used to composition. A beautiful book with many demonstrations. I would highly recommend to the beginning or advanced Plein-Air painter in oil.

    5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Resource.......2007-05-23

If you are an oil painter or even if you are a want-to-be painter, Kevin MacPherson's book is a terrific reference. Personally, I'm a Plein Air painter and Kevin is a master at painting on location. He covers what supplies you'll need and techniques in painting. I've had this book for some time and still refer to it often.

As coach of the Green Bay Packers from 1959 to 1967, Vince Lombardi turned perennial losers into a juggernaut, winning back-to-back NFL titles in 1961 and 1962, and Superbowls I and II in 1966 and 1967. Stern, severe, sentimental, and paternal, he stood revered, reviled, respected, and mocked--a touchstone for the '60s all in one person. Which adds up to the myth we've been left with. But who was the man? That's the question Pulitzer Prize-winner David Maraniss tackles. It begins with Lombardi's looming father, a man as colorful as his son would be conservative. Still, from his father Vince Lombardi learned a sense of presence and authority that could impress itself with just a look. If a moment can sum up and embrace a man's life--and capture the breadth of Maraniss's thoroughness--it is one that takes place off the field when the Packers organization decides to redecorate their offices in advance of the new head coach's arrival: "During an earlier visit," Maraniss reports, "he had examined the quarters--peeling walls, creaky floor, old leather chairs with holes in them, discarded newspapers and magazines piled on chairs and in the corners--and pronounced the setting unworthy of a National Football League club. 'This is a disgrace!' he had remarked." In one moment, one comment, Lombardi announced his intentions, made his vision and professionalism clear, and began to shake up a stale organization. It reveals far more about the man than wins and losses, and is the kind of moment Maraniss uses again and again in this superb resurrection of a figure who so symbolized a sporting era and sensibility. --Jeff Silverman

    Book Description

More than any other sports figure, Vince Lombardi transformed football into a metaphor of the American experience. The son of an Italian immigrant butcher, Lombardi toiled for twenty frustrating years as a high school coach and then as an assistant at Fordham, West Point, and the New York Giants before his big break came at age forty-six with the chance to coach a struggling team in snowbound Wisconsin. His leadership of the Green Bay Packers to five world championships in nine seasons is the most storied period in NFL history. Lombardi became a living legend, a symbol to many of leadership, discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, and to others of an obsession with winning. In When Pride Still Mattered, Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss captures the myth and the man, football, God, and country in a thrilling biography destined to become an American classic.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sports biographies I ever read.......2007-09-20

I couldn't help feeling that I was right there in frozen Green Bay, in the 1960s, at one of the Lombardis' Sunday post-game cocktail parties, and everywhere else Vince Lombardi went in his life, while reading this great book.
It's a great read, very vivid, about a great coach and (as Maraniss illustrates) not the greatest father in the world. In other words, a portrait of a human being who did great things with his work, but who had foibles like everybody else.

    5 out of 5 stars A very engrossing read.......2007-06-20

I picked up this book after hearing a strong recommendation. I knew next to nothing about Vince Lombardi, other than that he was an excellent football coach. Very glad I bought the book as this was a particularly engrossing biography.

The author was very thorough in his research and traces Lombardi's life in detail for his full nearly 60 years. He provides a lot of detail on Lombardi's strengths and weaknesses. At times I wanted to slug him and tell him to quit being so intense about football and pay more attention to his family. Other times, I found myself admiring the daylights out of him. It is astonishing to think he could take the most losing team in football and turn them into major winners in just one season.

There's a lot of food for thought in this biography. Is winning really so important that you should sacrifice your family and your health? Is success really success if you never enjoy it? As a recovering perfectionist, I saw many powerful examples from Lombardi's life about why I DON'T want to be a perfectionist! Nothing is ever good enough, and you never, ever get to be happy. That is one lesson in Lombardi's life that really comes blasting out of every story.

If you like biographies, you will really enjoy this one. Glad I decided to pick it up.

    5 out of 5 stars Biography of a Coach.......2007-04-12

This biography of Vince Lombardi will move you to tears and inspire you to find the best in others. Lombardi was truly a great teacher, coach, and man.

    5 out of 5 stars measure of a man.........2007-04-03

maybe the greatness of a man can be determined by his ability to inspire greatness in other men..by that account Vince Lombardi was a giant..maybe his tactics would not work as well with today's pampered athletes but I'm sure he would still find a way to inspire that's what the great teachers do..they not only teach about they're hired to..they teach about life..some of Lombardi's players to this day attribute their success on and off the field to the coach..I thought I knew so much about coach Lombardi but this book by David Maraniss filled me in on so many things I didn't know..Vince had a brother who was gay but he still went to church every day and never ostrasized his brother, he just figured the church got it wrong on this one..I read this book on a journey to Green Bay to visit Lambeau..I carried with me a picture of my dad shaking hands with Vince..but you don't have to be a Packer fan to enjoy and be inspired by this book..it's simply one of the best biographies I've ever read..even a Viking fan would enjoy it..as one of his ex-players recants..'there's not a day that goes by that I don't miss that man'...

    5 out of 5 stars A Man's Man. .......2007-02-20

I read Harvey Mansfield's Manliness last spring, and I have to say that Vince Lombardi embodies all of his criteria for the positive expression of masculinity. Coach Lombardi demonstrated the coveted male virtues of valor, devotion, passion, loyalty, and the need for victory. What's so telling about Maraniss's account is the way in which the narrator reveals to us slowly, but consistently, just how much the man meant to the people around him. A couple of the scenes with Starr and Hornung will choke you up--particularly the letter that Bart's dad sent to Lombardi. When Lombardi went to the Redskins, even though he was only with them for a year, he transformed the players completely. He walked up to the podium with a single ring on and restored their hope. Sonny Jurgensen had never possessed a leader's mentality before meeting Lombardi. In a single year's time, he led the team to a winning season and became a man admired for more than talent alone. For all of us who are devoted fans of the NFL, Coach Lombardi will always be remembered and treasured. I say this despite the fact that I have no use for the Green Bay Packers and have hated them since I was a kid. No matter, a man like this is above partisan loyalty. He's better than all that stuff. He could be gruff, angry, and harsh, but everyone around him (almost unanimously) still loved him because they could sense him love and devotion. He returned their love again and again. Vince Lombardi was a teacher, a coach, a tactician, a strategist, and a man's man, RIP.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting and useable helpful hints.......2007-09-27

Very interesting hints and points how to meet people who match with your intrests and needs.

3 out of 5 stars Step one, find a huge group of availble partners .......2007-07-05

If you really don't know how to attract a mate, are subconsciously avoiding finding one, or tend to make poor choices....this book is for you. On the other hand, if you would love to find the perfect life partner but are limited by the number of available people of the same sexual orientation, age, attractiveness or social class, this book will not help you. It depends heavily on your having a reasonably large dating pool. She makes it sound like everyone has enough people in their social circle to create an endless reject list if necessary.

    4 out of 5 stars Non-sentimental, good advice.......2007-05-18

It will probably make you want to break up with the person you are dating...which may be why you are reading the book. I thought the first half of the book was the best part and had some very good points and was insightful. The second half of the book--less interesting. But I did buy it for a few girlfriends who needed to read it.

    5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!.......2007-01-30

I bought this book in 1990 and still have my copy with multi-layers of highlighting. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I learned so much and, to this day, I still use the term "psuedo intimacy" in discussions about relationships. (I also refer to "psuedo love" which SP does not use in her book but which is clearly inspired by her and inferred.)

From Chapter 6: "Understanding the distinction between pseudo-intimate games and real intimacy is the best defense against getting deeply involved with a person who cannot open up to you, become vulnerable, and share closely in the way a lifetime of living together demands." "...now, a relationship can move from formal to friendly to sexual in the course of one evening. ... The (Closeness Game) game looks and feels like genuine intimacy but leaves you feeling empty in the end."

From Chapter 10: "...if you are still single because of a lack of self-awareness and self-acceptance, then all the strategies and techniques in the world won't be very useful to you. A good relationship with yourself is a prerequisite for a successful relationship with the person you love. If you don't love yourself, you will place an unfair and impossible burden on your partner: you will try to get him or her to make you feel good about yourself. ...self awareness is an ongoing, ever expanding process."

That and much, much more is contained within the pages of this book. Highly, highly, highly recommended. Life-changing (for the better).

    4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-11-13

I am a Christian, and although this book is not written from a Chrsitian viewpoint, the advice is hopeful and excellent!

I read a lot, and this is a substantial (not fluffy) book. Buy it!

    Book Description

A small Kansas town has turned into a killing ground. Is it a serial killer, a man with the need to destroy? Or is it a darker force, a curse upon the land? Amid golden cornfields, FBI Special Agent Pendergast discovers evil in the blood of America's heartland.

    Download Description

Agent Pendergast returns to investigate a serial killer in a small town. Heavy with midwest gothic flavor, Medicine Creek, Kansas, has been dying for the last century: the primary occupation is still farming; Main Street is a two-block stretch of bleak and dusty businesses; the nearest mall is 200 miles away. Then, a series of grisly murders with the bodies displayed in peculiar tableaus shocks the tiny town. Believing they'd know if a stranger had passed through, the locals lock their doors and look more carefully at their neighbors. Pendergast arrives with his refined New Orleans accent, big city ways, and meals shipped in from Zabar's and Balducci's. Taking on a local teenage misfit as his research assistant, Pendergast's investigation takes him into the heart of this town-from its bowling alley to its corn fields to its touristy spelunking caves. From uncovering the geological mysteries of the local caves, to the remnants of a Prohibition-era moonshine operation, to the secret of one of western Kansas' greatest enigmas: the Medicine Creek Massacre of 1865, Pendergast's journey leads him to encounter a decayed and twisted evil in the soul of a four-generation Kansas family.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Freaky, freaky bad guy.......2007-09-24

Ahh, so this is Pendergast's idea of a vacation. Scary and impossible to predict, Still Life with Crows will keep you far, far away from the corn fields of the midwest for life. The vivid imagery will haunt you for days afterward.

    Definately worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining book... but not Preston & Child's best.......2007-09-19

If you are already a fan of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, then you will like this book, which is another one featuring the popular character of Agent Pendergast.

I personally did not prefer it as much as others because no other recurring characters (Laura Hayward, Constance, Nora Kelly, Smithback, Nora Green, etc) appear, and it is a standalone book. The character of Corrie acts as a pretty entertaining sidekick and interesting character, though I would be surprised to see her reappear in another novel of theirs.

This book also one of their most gruesome in my opinion.

If you are just starting to read Preston & Child, I would not start here. Maybe try Cabinet of Curiosities, which I think is one of their best books.

    4 out of 5 stars Great premise...........2007-09-03

...some great characters (too bad Corrie seems to have vanished from the series), but a disappointing resolution. In some ways this now seems like a typically uneven Preston-Child book. I think most of their subsequent books focusing on their brilliantly original and fun character Agent Pendergast have similiar problems, including very prominently disappointing, ridiculous plot twists and conclusion. Also, Pendergast's eccentricities are often just too broad and over-the-top. The scene in this book where he insists on painstakingly making steak tartare at a local diner while the local yokels look on, shocked and awed, is grossly affected and insulting. The guy is supposed to be a g-- d----- FBI agent and he is acting like a cross between Hercule Poirot and Julia Child. His supposedly innovative meditation/ visualization technique is also a bit on the ridiculous and pretentious side, and unfortunately becomes more prominent in later books in the series. I could do without his encyclopedic knowledge of everything related to art, science, and literature, for that matter, as well. At least they dropped his public addiction to steak tartare, though.

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-08-31

The beginning is a little slow but it gets going towards the end. I really like the hints it gives to some of the other books.

5 out of 5 stars A little different Pendergast novel.......2007-07-19

I have now read all of Preston and Child's Aloysius Pendergast novels. I read them in order except for "Still Life With Crows." In hindsight, I would highly recommend reading them in order, since the characters from earlier books keep popping up in later ones. "Still Life with Crows," however, is an exception. None of the previous characters are in this book, with the exception of Wren, a librarian who sometimes helps Pendergast, and his role is very minor.

Supposedly, Pendergast is "on vacation" in rural Kansas, but readers know that he follows gruesome murders, especially serial killers. As usual, Pendergast is almost done in by the killer before he saves the day (actually, another character saves the day, but that would be spoiling it to say any more). Some pretty good characters, especially the teenage girl Corrie who helps Pendergast despite her being the town's outcast rebellious kid.

So if you've loved other Pendergast novels in the series, you'll like this one. It wasn't my favorite of the series, but it was almost as good as my favorites.

The correct order of the series:

    Relic
    Reliquary
    Still Life With Crows
    Cabinet of Curiosities
    Brimstone
    Dance of Death
    Book of the Dead

The last three are a trilogy, so buy them all at once, because you won't sleep until you've finished them all!

    Book Description

    Planet earth, home sweet home

In the year 2000, world-renowned wildlife photographer Frans Lanting set out on a personal journey to photograph the evolution of life on earth. He made pilgrimages to true time capsules like a remote lagoon in Western Australia, spent time in research collections photographing forms of microscopic life, and even found ways to create visual parallels between the growth of organs in the human body and the patterns seen on the surface of the earth. The resulting volume is a glorious picture book of planet earth depicting the amazing biodiversity that surrounds us all. Lanting's true gift lies beyond his technical mastery: it is his eye for geometry in the beautiful chaos of nature that allows him to show us the world as it has never been seen before. From crabs to jellyfish, diatoms to vast geological formations, jungles to flowers, monkeys to human embryos, LIFE is a testament to the magical beauty of life in all its forms and is Lanting's most remarkable achievement to date.

However, for a book of this production quality (and it's very high), I was surprised with the number and degree of colour enhanced images and the lack of interpretation - either of the subjects (and their relationship to the theme of time) or of the technical aspects of the photography and the story behind the photographs (for the photo nerds amongst us!). To be fair, Lanting does provide single paragraph descriptions for each photo, but these seem like an after thought enforced by the publisher. Maybe writing is not Lanting's thing, pity, because his photography is impressive. Alternatively, I might have bought the wrong type of book: If you want something visually stunning to leave open on the coffee table, then buy it- it was a better deal than that offered by shops here in NZ!

2 out of 5 stars He may be a great cardiologist, but...........2006-05-26

I was disappointed in this book. While promising low carb and tipping his hat to Dr. Atkins, this book is squarely moderate carb.

There are many internal inconsistencies and inaccuracies in this book. For example (page 131) "In Western countries, the only[italicized in original]good source of insoluble fiber is the husk of the wheat kernel, called bran." The Harvard School of Public Health states that insoluble fiber can also be found in seeds. Flax seed has 3g of fiber per tablespoon, 2 of which is insoluble, and virtually no other carbohydrate. Wheat bran has only 1.5 grams of fiber per tablespoon and almost another gram of other carbohydrate.

Dr. Thompson is also contradictory in his advice about dietary cholesterol. He says that dietary cholesterol does not significantly affect blood cholesterol (p.46, p.146). Yet, when giving dietary advice, he advocates avoiding egg yolks on the same page! (p. 146)

I am concerned by his enthusiastic use of statins as the only means to control blood cholesterol. He mentions no side effects. On the other hand, he goes to great pains to point out the potential side effects of aspirin.

If you are looking for a dietary answer, I'd suggest The South Beach Diet by Dr. Agaston as a far superior work.

The New Low-Carb Way of Life is a very satisfying eating program that has enabled me to lose a lot of weight and to reduce my blood pressure and cholesterol to ideal levels! I don't feel hungry or deprived - in fact, I feel great! The book is enjoyable to read, and Dr. Thompson's advice is very easy to follow. I highly recommend it!

My cousin and I both have PCOS and she actually was referred to Dr Thompson by one of my dr's. During her visit, he gave her a copy of this book and when I flipped through it, I figured we both could do this and get off a lot of the medications we both take. In the first 5 days I followed what was in her book, I have already lost weight and inches, so I am going to go get my own copy so I can lose more. We are both pumped, and our goal is to lose more weight before her next monthly appointment with Dr Thompson.

If you want to have a better understanding about cholesterol and body weight, then this book by Rob Thompson is the answer. He explains everything in detail like a master story teller and the common man will not have any difficulty in understanding.

I have been on a low carb diet for a long time and supplemented that habit with a wonderful tasting replacement made from soyabeans. You brew like coffee and it even helps lower your cholesterol. I found it online at www.S o y c o f f e e.c o m. Gaining this understanding will effect every move you make from this point on and will bring with it the necessity to share it. Your life will become all the more enjoyable.

It isn't a diet, it is a way of life that makes sense and works! My Italian pasta/bagle loving husband and I, a chocoholic, and mother of five, were worried about midlife pounds, lack of energy and family genetics of diabetes. Dr. Thompson's book made so much sense that we tried it. We have each lost 30 pounds(he looks yummy again!), have more energy, have gotten back to our walking regiment and are still enjoying eating. We have fun discovering better ways to order from menus, are amazed the "punch" a few cherries or pistachio nuts can have and I can still eat chocolate! This book gave us back control of our bodies and our lives!

    Book Description

Can anything separate us from God's love? Does He really love us, no matter what?

How does He feel about me when I snap at anything that moves? When I've failed as a parent? When my thoughts are gutter-level? When my tongue is sharp? Have I drifted too far? Waited too long? Slipped too much? The answer is found in one of life's sweetest words-grace.

It is God who lovingly holds us in the eternal grip of His grace. Our good deeds won't help. Perfect performance is not required. The God who made us has redeemed us and covered our sinfulness with His righteousness. His holiness is sufficient for all our sin. And that's grace.

Best-selling author Max Lucado proclaims the grace of God to be "the greatest discovery of my life." And he wants to share that discovery by taking us on a journey through the mountaintop truths found in Paul's letter to the Romans. "Romans is the grandest treatise on grace ever written. You'll find the air fresh and the view clear."

This is my favorite Lucado book so far. He explains the true meaning of grace and it's role in our salvation in a beautiful and insightful way. The illustrations used throughout the book really drive the point home. Great book for Christians and for those who are still searching.

    5 out of 5 stars terrific.......2007-01-17

A great book on the study of Romans. Every CoC member should read it and let go of our Pelagian attitudes.

1 out of 5 stars Grip of Grace? Get a Grip!.......2007-01-01

This book is a Bible Study.

I got it for Christmas and it absolutely ruined the birthday of Christ for me. I mean who wants to hear about Christ on Christmas?

This book proves that there is no involvement of God in our daily lives; because why would God want to ruin my Christmas by giving me this book?

Oh, and it is horribly written. I mean bad. I mean grade-school level.

The author must be intellectually immature, just like people who read this book and enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Learn About Amazing Grace.......2006-11-09

Two years ago I began a study of the grace of God, and this volume greatly encouraged me.

This analogies are great; his use of Scripture is carefully handled. I highly recommend this volume if somone is attempting to discover what is grace.

    Advance praise for Hotel California

"A British rock critic obsessed with America, Barney Hoskyns brings a genuine love as well as an outsider's keen eye to the rise and fall of the California scene in the sixties and seventies. This is a riveting story, sensitively told."
—Anthony DeCurtis, Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone

"Comprehensive and lively, Hotel California offers a front-row seat on the wild ride—fueled by drugs, sex, and lots of cash—that took Southern California singer-songwriters from hot tubs and local bars to sold-out stadiums, private jets, and the bestselling album of all time."
—Alan Light, author of The Skills to Pay the Bills: The Story of the Beastie Boys

"One of our finest pop historians reappraises a neglected and often maligned milieu. Barney Hoskyns deftly evokes not just the decadence but the sense of discovery rooted in 1960s idealism and fostered by a gaggle of record industry mavericks who, for a brief period, managed to make art and business coexist."
—Simon Reynolds, author of Rip It Up and Start Again

4 out of 5 stars A Thoroughly Enjoyable Summer Read.......2007-08-20

This is the definitive story of Laurel Canyon and the rise and fall of the singer-songwriters that defined an era. Fabulous backstage gossip, great interviews, and a long, revealing look at David Geffen and his role in shaping the sound and artistry of so many great musicians -- Joni, Laura, CSNY, Gene Clark, JT, you name it.

I enjoyed this book so much I didn't want it to end. It also turned me on to some forgotten songwriters and albums that got lost in the shuffle -- Judee Sill being one amazing example.

An essential read for music fans.

3 out of 5 stars Hotel California: The True-Life Adventures of Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Mitchell, Taylor, Browne, Ronstadt, Geffen, the Eagle.......2007-08-04

No Pretender. Interesting insight into the genre of singer-songwriter and into the time period when music was becoming personal to a generation that would lay the groundwork music for future generations. Good background story on the artists and players, explaining with some detail the lyrics that still roll around in my head. Somewhat shallow story describing a shallow lifestyle that resulted in deep emotion. Too much repetition, would have been more interesting if more of the story was told with less dialogue. That said - it's worth the time, and the knowledge gain. Good to know who's behind Linda's "You're no good", and Joni's "Case of You" and why James went to "Mexico". Boomer fodder.

    4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2007-08-03

An enjoyable book with a lot of insight into the rock stars of the era.

2 out of 5 stars Just in case the music wasn't a big enough reason to hate them..........2007-07-23

Did you know that the only time musicians ever wrote their own songs was from 1967 to 1976? That's what you'll learn from this book. Did you know that the kids of today just don't care about the world around them? According to the book the only evidence you need of this is that you don't hear a lot of chart-topping anti-Bush songs coming out of coffee houses. So remember kids, until you're a drug-damaged, self-righteous, hypocritical d-bag pushed to the stars by a sexually confused ruthless business man (the only people who have ever been capable of and succeeded in changing the world), you don't mean anything-just like their elders.

But to sum up this book: Stills and Young have a love-hate relationship, David Geffen is gay and pushed Jackson Browne because he had a crush on him, David Crosby is an easier-to-listen-to version of Sean Penn, The Eagles were a marketing scam and Joni Mitchell owns that parking lot.

PS-too many Zevon tags, not enough Zevon.

    2 out of 5 stars poorly written,inaccurate.......2007-06-10

don't bother to buy this very poorly written book that has distorted facts. The author is basically repeating various quotes from many sources repeatedly.Boring...His facts are wrong. For example he states that Graham Nash was a very compromising person. In fact he was not and this has been verified with his past history with the Hollies.
I am not a critical person but this book was a real disappointment to me...
