I just marvel at the grace and dignity of George and his work. The story of his life is just as interesting as his life's work. I do home remodeling and occasionally have the chance to make a piece of custom furniture for a client. I find his accomplishments truly amazing.

This is a superb book on George Nakashima, written by his daughter. It is a good complement to "Sould of a tree" written by Nakashima himself. While "Sould of a tree" looked at the furniture, "Nature form & Spirit" starts with the life of Nakashima and how he came to design all his furniture and the houses. It is not a technical book, but it gives an interesting insight on the philosophy and thinking process behind the designs. Much more than a coffe table book, an inspiration for all woodworking lovers

My husband has been wanting this book for a long time; it was recommended to us by an old friend of Nakashima. We've always loved his work, that which is at the Metropolitan Museum and also the arboretum library in Minneapolis, completely furnished with Nakashima's work. The book was no disappointment; we loved it. Truly he understood "the soul of a tree."

Great guide with one flaw.......2007-07-11
I had this book recommended to me by a friend years ago when we were all trying to get into the comic book industry. I bought it and loved it. You can learn anything you want to know about how the musculature and skeleton are put together and how they work. Each different part of the anatomy is given almost too much attention. Each angle is given a photo of the body part, and drawings of the arm with muscles or just the skeleton.
The biggest problem is there isn't too much tying the parts together. You may get a very good idea how the arm works, where the muscles put to and from, how the skeleton moves when you move your arm, but you won't get much information on how the arm connects and moves with the rest of the body. Your aren't a collection of individual parts (2 arms, 2 legs, etc) but one unified body and all your parts move together. You need a good concept of that before this book will be used to its utmost.
A little heavy on the text, but a very thorough anatomy book........2007-07-03
This book covers from the skeletal system to muscles, from head to toe, very thoroughly. Pictures are nice and clear. All important muscles feature full explanation on its origin, insert, function etc in text, and frontal and side view as well as in context of the whole muscle group along with a photograph of the real body part flexing with the related muscles. I find this book a little heavy a the text part, but images and photographs make up for it and make this book the most complete, and thorough anatomy book.
Last anatomy book you'll ever buy.......2007-06-26
This book is the best anatomy book I have come upon. I purchased every book I could find on this subject until I found this one. I am a sculptor and painter so this book provides everything I need to understand all the surface structure of the human body. It explains origin and insertion of each muscle and their function. (important to know when deciding in a pose which muscles would be flexed and which would be relaxed) There are cross-section drawings of the muscles so that you can see the size comparison of muscles around them. There are photographs of the muscles flexed using a thin model, the surface can be distinguished. I have taught Artistic Anatomy and this is a the cherished book of many of my students.
SUPERB ANATOMY BOOK.......2007-05-20
This book is exactly what I was looking for in an anatomy reference book. The cross-sectional drawings are great to help visualize the muscle forms in different positions. Not only does it deliver on accuracy of the muscles but it also depicts how the muscles are placed on the human skeleton from different angles, this helps me to understand the "wedging" of the muscles. I've seen this same title in other book stores for the retail price and I must say AMAZON has a great price for this book.

This book gives detailed explanations and has great pictures, it is helpful and inspirational : it allows you to expand your skills beyond the book's examples. A must for fimo-maniacs. Katherine Dewey is probably the most gifted polymer clay artist in the world but is able to use pedagogy to share her knowledge.
I do not recommend it for beginners or children though, as some of the creations are detailed and might require some anatomy basics to be sculpted successfully.

This book, by Katherine Dewey, is a terrific resource book for those wishing to make animals from polymer clay - either to enhance their other sculptures or as a stand alone product. Numerous pictures and examples, with detailed instruction guide you step by step through the process. Animals included are deer, in two poses, frog, wolf, seal, bear and more. She also includes examples of bases, such as a leave for a sleeping mouse.
The book is well organized and transitions beautifully from one point to another. Graphics are included along with tips and tricks on making armatures and painting the final product. This book has it all and I highly recommend it as a necessary part of your crafting library.
Creatring life-like animals in Polymer Clay.......2006-03-19
I found Katherine Dewey to be an excellent instructor, her directions were clear,detailed and easy to follow. I appreciated the directions for making your own tools as these can be expensive and hard to find. The tips and directions continue to be helpful in projects other than those given in the book. I highly recommend this book as well as her other book, Creating Life-Like Figures in Polymer Clay to anyone interested in working with this medium.

An Entertaining Read for ELR Fans.......2007-06-12
I think this book would appeal to fans of "Everybody Loves Raymond". For some parts it talks about the struggles of Phil Rosenthal's early days as an aspiring actor cum writer. His experiences before he found success are recorded with humor and insight. However the most entertaining parts were when he recounted how some of my favorite episodes came about. It is like a keepsake for an ELR fan.

Haven't read a book in years I am ashamed to say. However, a portion of this book was in the Reader's Digest recently and was fascinating, if you are a devotee of "Everyone Loves Raymond," Thought I would get it and it would collect dust, like the other books I purchase. Nope, I read it in 3 nites. Not sure why this book didn't soar, or at least I never heard about it. Phil Rosenthal permeates every episode of the Raymond series....you can see that clearly here.

I thought a humor book would have an edge as a book on CD, but the cadence of the author's voice is off-putting. It's like listening to Jackie Mason Lite. Good stories about the behind-the-scenes life of a comedy writer if you can get past the voice of Phil Rosenthal.

Depending on what you are purchasing this book for...my interest was for fiber art work which it fits the bill totally. The drawings from Mr. Haeckel are superb. I only wish they were in color...which you can purchase the more expensive color plate book. But still this is quite worth the money.

Anyone who 'knows' Dover books, will probably agree that they offer good quality for very reasonable prices. There is nothing 'wrong' with this book, except that all the plates are in black and white, and there is no information on Haeckel and his times. Prestel has also published this book of plates, with a highly informative article on Haeckel, his influences, and those influenced by him included, AND with many of the plates 'in color' (that is, often one color in different -subtle - hues, or a color scheme based on two colors). Unless you are a strictly 'black and white' person, I would advise you to look for the Prestel book.

Everyone needs to write the story of their life. My parents did not write their's which makes me sad because their story will never really be told. But by writing my own story, I was able to write some of theirs from my perspective and how they influenced my life and helped make me become who I am. As a new author, myself, I was cautioned about including a section at the end of the book, about the story of my life. I can tell you that I receive as many comments about "my story" as I do about the content of my book, which is a business book. Ask yourself why is reality TV so popular? Write the story of your life using the easy techniques outlined so well in this book, the loved ones you leave behind will appreciate it!

A Dated "Memoir Writing for Dummies".......2007-02-16
Had Thomas written this a decade or so later, it would have been a great inclusion in the "For Dummies" series. He uses lots of lists and fills his chapters with idea starters for anyone interested in documenting his or her own life for posterity. Given that many who seek to write their own memoirs will not have any real writing background or training, Thomas provides a good range of basic writing hints as well.
The author includes literally hundreds of questions that would be good joggers for those having difficulty thinking of anything "worthwhile" to write about themselves and could also be a resource for anyone seeking to learn more about their own family's oldest generation. Unfortunately, the book's sample memoirs and even some of these questions seem dated (not surprising, given that the book has been in print over 20 years!). Of even more concern is the lack of updating to current technology; computers are essentially non-existent, so his hints on things like first drafts and final format for publishing are irrelevant.
For the price, this is a good book to have just for the idea starters, but it will need supplementing with more recent texts for anyone interested in writing memoir from start to finish.

This is a great read for those interested in writing their life story. Mr. Thomas goes from early childhood through retirement, so having been born in the 1970s, some of the information did not apply personally. However, it is still well worth the reading. He has specific prompts, and works with small "chunks" of life. Entwined are guides to good writing, and other aspects of writing a great story.
A Must Read For Autobiographers.......2000-06-26
I've worked most of my adult life as an actor. One of my grandchildren was watching television and saw an old movie in which I appeared. "Grandpa, is that you?" After having to explain what I did for a living, it occurred to me that I was no different. I knew very little about my ancestors. At the time, I didn't know what my own grandfather (who died before I was born) did for a living. I wanted to make sure that future generations of my family know that I existed and what I did for a living. It was then that I realized how important it was to write my life's story to preserve my legacy.
Of all the books I researched when I first set out to undertake this task, I found Frank P. Thomas' "How to Write the Story of Your Life" to be among the most concise and most helpful. It became my constant companion as I spent those long hours at night in my study pounding away on my keyboard or sitting at the dining room table handwriting a vignette to be added to the book.
Thomas' book is laid out in an easy-to-read format, lending itself not only as a step-by-step guide, but sectionalized in such a way as to be used as a handy research resource manual. There is a lot of sound advice contained within his book that I found to be highly effective. For example, it helps not to ignore news and current events occurring during the telling of one's life, even if you don't actually relate the news items directly. By spending a few hours in the library to research certain magazine articles and newspaper headlines from a particular period, I found my memory banks were stimulated and I was often able to capture a flavor of the political climate, social mores, fashions, and/or cultural fads of the time. Those influences were incorporated into the events of my life. Sometimes I was able to relate to current events of the time directly, which helps to allow readers to identify with you personally.
Another important lesson I learned was that in order to capture and maintain a reader's attention, you must stimulate as many of his/her senses as you can. Therefore, I found myself going through my text trying to find places where I could introduce stimuli to sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.
This is but a mere sampling of the invaluable direction I received from Thomas. The result was my autobiography was published under the title "Surrender the Jealous Mistress" (available through amazon.com), which I'm told is engaging and reads like a novel. If that's true, then I attribute a large portion of that compliment to Frank Thomas' sound advice and guidance.
No matter how insignificant you may perceive it to be (it's not), I encourage you to attempt to write your life's story. Once that decision is made, I highly recommend obtaining a copy of Frank Thomas' book, "How to Write the Story of Your Life," to guide you through the process.

I keep going back...and back, and back to The Legacy Guide.

When I first got it, I thought to myself: "I don't want to write my story. But at least I'll understand what the authors are trying to do".
So I perused the book, put it down, and concentrated on moving to Santa Fe. That's whee I had met the authors.
This week, finally, I picked it up and started REALLY digging in.
Here are my NEWEST thoughts:
1. This is NOT a "how to" book. This is a guide to one's life...by great writers who have the ability to make the reader take an introspective look at life details we normally ignore.
2. I would almost call it a "Life Guide", except that sounds pompous. But that's what it is...a guide to make the reader really understand what she/he has (and is) experienced in life. Example: the older generation...middle, late adult, elder. I learned more about what it means to get older than ever before...things I never realized were happening to me...WHY we see the world differently...HOW others treat us differently, etc. Every older person should read this.
3. One of the keys to keeping the reader's attention is the use of the many quotes...that were so personal to those quoted...and always right on target. .
Yes, we recognize people such as Alan Alda, Jane Fonda, Goldie Hawn ...and of course the great Jim Botkin. But every quote was right on target, regardless of the notoriety of the writer. Each quote made its point...and I feel the quotes brought the book more alive than any other system might have done. Ever.
Again and again,I find myself going through the book and reading the quotes/articles. The use of italics on the quotes makes that job easier to accomplish.
I could go on and on.....even get effusive.
But somehow this book should be on everyone's bookshelf. You'll just keep referring to it, time and again.
It's worth the trip.

Life-writing books abound, but it's rare to find one as thought provoking and incisive as The Legacy Guide. Carol Franco and Kent Lineback have delivered an excellent resource. Best of all, it's not necessary to work it from first page to last--jump in anywhere and the memories begin to flow. As a professional personal historian, I try to stay abreast of what's available to recommend to clients, classes and in presentations. This now ranks in my top three, right along with Your Life as Story by Tristine Rainer, and Keeping Family Memories Alive, by Vera Rosenbluth.

What a wonderful gift for everyone - your friends, your family, or yourself! You can read The Legacy Guide cover to cover and follow every exercise (highly recommended), or if time is an issue, you can flip through and browse the stories. I found myself doing both. I gave the book to my parents, and I can't wait to get started working on collecting our family's stories.

Amazing and Little Known Organisms Illustrated.......2006-03-24
Radiolarians are a total blank to the majority of people, yet these remarkable builders of glass houses (microscopic to be sure) abound in the world's oceans. Ernst Haeckel, the Nineteenth Century German biologist and supporter of Darwin, wrote the most comprehensive monograph on the group in his Radiolarian Atlas of 1862, which is still in use today. The illustrations have never been surpassed and so it is certainly a boon for microscopists that the plates have now been republished in all their glory as "Art Forms from the Ocean: The Radiolarian Atlas of 1862". In many ways I wish that the text would have included descriptions of the radiolarians illustrated and their distributions, but that probably would have been of little interest to the general public. Instead there is a discussion of Haeckel's life and work, especially of his involvement with radiolarians and other microscopic marine life.
Still, for the price this is a real bargain, and I thus recommend this book just for the plates to any amateur or professional biologist who is interested in the micro planktonic organisms of the ocean.

Writing a Life is the perfect synthesis between a good armchair read and a how-to-guide. I made notes all over the margins of this book and can't wait to begin teaching memoir to my students. The last chapter - teaching kids how to get ready for standardized tests - will become a classic reference tool for all teachers of reading and writing.
