I'm not an electrician so the price of the NEC delayed my buying a copy for too many years. I hunted for answers in forums and other web sources. (For advanced home improvers, Rex Cauldwell's excellent Wiring a House (For Pros by Pros) is a wonderful resource.)
I bought the spiral-bound edition 2005 National Electrical Code Spiralbound & Turbo Tab Set.
The 2005 NEC is as readable as and better than some codes. I recommend some highlighters and the 2005 NEC Tabs.
Millers Illustrated Guide to the NEC: Based on the 2005 National Electrical Code is a somewhat pricy but helpful companion. The coordinated descriptions and illustrations make the Code take on real-world meaning. There are almost no illustrations in the NEC.

Just to let you know that i have ordered this book a month ago and I'm still haven't receive it !!! Of course they already charged my account. If you really need it just go over to the nearest Borders and buy it,Illustrated Guide to the NEC: Based on the 2005 National Electrical Code at least you will not have this headache waiting for something that may be in your house six months later !!!! this is everything i would ask for in a code book. it has details and is very comprehensive. this code book is great for keeping everything up to code.in reality sometimes compromises need to be make for pratical sake, electical inspectors i've dealt with understand that too. sure follow the book to perfectlly in a test exam but in real life something are not going to be happening.

This book is one of the best, most thorough and well explained textbooks I have encountered in the past 5 years of school. The authors, one of whom is teaching my course, present their explanations in a way that is both thorough and accessible. This is not a cookbook by any means - it is a very solid, detailed foundation for power electronics, and doesn't gloss over the important concepts like other books in the field. If you're just looking for a reference book with equations, circuits, and tables, this isn't for you. However, if you're looking for a text to study and understand in detail, you'll be right at home.

I would agree with the other reviewer that this is not a "how to" book. The book approaches the subject from an academic viewpoint. The reader is expected to fill in between the lines with previous experience. It appears that the authors, professors as U of C, supplement the text with worked out examples for their students. I would recomend it to people already versed in the subject and want more information.I found it for half price and this makes it worth buying as a reference.

First off, this book is NOT a cookbook. It will not tell you how to design a power supply for a specific application. But this is not the books purpose. This book is written for those who wish to understand in depth knowledge of power conversion. It is written as a text book. If the reader took the time to understand what is written (and it is written well) then the person would be able to design a power supply for any application using any topolgy. It teaches you the first principles of power conversion in order for you to apply it. Out of all my power electronic books this is my favorite book by far. If you are a power supply designer this book is a must.

Fundamentals of Power Electronics, by Erickson and Maksimovic, has become one of my new favorite reference books for DC-DC Converter design. My library is full of similar books, but most only contain insignificant bits of information, are needlessly difficult, or just plain worthless (but a requisite in the power engineering bookcase). The massive FPE combines the best of them all, exceeding even my former favorites (those by Tater, Billings, or Pressman). Although written as a textbook with the usual exercises at the end of each chapter (and frustratingly, with no answers) it is full of practical, applicable information. It has excellent chapters on inductors and transformers, with practical information such as inter-weaved windings for reduced leakage. It has one of the best treatments of Bode plots than any one book I have contains (I can now retire my old Valkenburg). Thankfully, it does not waste pages with useless Nyquist or other esoteric loop stability analysis methods. Nice index and appendix. I wish Maksimovic had included a section on his famous switched-capacitor circuit, even if not technically a power circuit. I highly recommend this book for any engineer seriously involved in power electronics.

We used this book in my building construction class i took as a second year architecture student. The book is good for people who are learning the basics of how things work, are put together, what types of materials are used for different situations, etc. However if you are looking for detailed drawings, I would go elsewhere. The book is good for generalized explanations, so I did learn a lot from it.

The last new substantial advance in basic mechanics of materials (the concept of shear center) was 80 or so years ago. Buy this new overpriced edition of the textbook only if required to for school. Den Hartog's "Strength of Materials" or an earlier version of Beer & Johnson or Popov will save you money without sacrificing any content.

The book explained the concepts of the subject well enough, but the number of typos in the problems and in the answer key led to many hours of frustration. I was often under the impression I was doing something wrong, only to find out the givens in a problem had incorrect prefixes, or some other error.

like my title suggest this is a excellent code book for a residential project, personlly i am in the building trade so i have all the building code books The IRC + all three Voloums of UBC. It all depends on what part of the trade you are in I am in the remodeling part so actually i could probably get by with just the IRC Residential. the main thing to do is find out what code books your city building department is useing.
Like i said if all you can afford is one book then i would go for this book, an then later on as your business grows buy the rest.

this is a great book but i'd rather they organize there diagrams better and in a more direct way. grouping them up in a non cohesive way is counter intuitive. Blocks of pages are just diagrams then in the reading I have to go back and find the page with in that block of diagram pages. Its detailed but just not organized in a good way.

I am a graduate student at ASU. This book is part of the required course materials, since Montgomery is affiliated with ASU. The quality of this textbook is what you may find in a mediocre $40 statistics book. I have not seen statistics dealt with in a more confusing manner. Explanations are incomplete, graphs meant to illustrate concepts are not labeled, symbols and functions are used without defining them, and there are errors in the examples. My understanding was that D. Montgomery has been in this field for a long time. However, basic principles, like including units with the data, are ignored. I expected by the 6th attempt these problems would have been worked out. The other reviews do not make sense to me, since my classmates feel a similar frustration with the book.

This book is long on formula derivation, and short on DOE theory. It does not introduce readers to DOE software packages like it claims either.
Also, very poor on real life examples. They exist....but not enough details in order to understand them. I am looking to teach a corporate class on this....too bad the book doesn't come with the professor.

I have used this book in my class on Experimental Design since 1997. Among all the texts I have tried to use to make the teaching of this subject more precise and understandable, this book from Dr. Montgomery have proven to be the more appropriated. The book has new exercises, more teacher resources, and is now more software oriented, something that I found very useful for my students in Dominican Republic.

My best friend, who is a bookworm, gave me this book to read. I can usually tell within a few pages if I'm going to like it and sure enough, after the first few paragraphs, I was hooked.
This is a love story; not a science fiction story. The fact that Henry has this condition that catapults him back and forth in his and Clare's past, is very important to the story, but not enough to make it a sci-fi story.
After reading how much Henry loved Clare and how tender and carful he was when he met her while she was a child, I found myself wanting to *be* Clare and have some love me as Henry does her. The author writes a truely awe inspiring love story that leaves me gasping for more.
This book has become my addiction over the past week; I find myself counting the hours until the kids go down to bed at night so I can curl up and read as much as I want without being interrupted. I've found myself laughing out loud, and crying...and I might add, I'll be finishing the book this evening. I'm saving it. I know it ends sadly and I've already found myself welling up with tears at the prospect of Henry's and Clare's fates.
When I am done with this book, I will give it back to my friend and I will get my own copy so that I may read the tale of Henry and Clare over and over and over. And I'm sure that each time I read it, I will get something else out of it that I missed before.
Someone on a blog about this book posted a comment about the author possibly doing a sequel. That would be awesome...perhaps they could call it "The Time Traveler's Daughter"...
This book is nothing short of beautiful. The characters are so real; I felt as though I knew them personally. I have visions of how beautiful Clare is with her long, copper hair and of how handsome and distinguished Henry is through all the stages of his life from young boy to man. I will miss them once I read the final pages this evening. You have to slow down and read this book, as there time changes and changes in location and year. It goes back and forth between Henry and Clare. You really do have to sort of just slow down and read, and sometimes re-read but it is SOOOO worth it...

I know a lot of people love this book and it was given to me by someone who loved it. I might have agreed--all the way up to the end. The ending ruined the rest of the book, and left me shaken and angry. I really felt cheated. I don't want to synopsize the book, nor ruin it for someone else who might love it, but I felt as though the author didn't know what else to do, or ran up against deadlines...it was a cheap ending to a marvelous story. But that's just my opinion.....
