4 out of 5 stars A Great Gift.......2007-10-02

I bought this as a gift for my mother. She really likes the way the author described Heaven. She never looked at Heaven in this way before.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven.......2007-09-18

I found Dr. Alcorn's book, Heaven, very enlightening. It answered questions for me. He addressed many of the questions that I have had since the death of my son. His answers were based on scripture and he was honest in his beliefs. We can only know from what God has said in his word and that is always left up to interpretation. I pray that Dr. Alcorn is right in his analysis. His book brought me comfort and peace.

5 out of 5 stars I can't wait to get to Heaven.......2007-09-02

Randy Alcorn challelnges popular notions of heaven in thought provoking yet easy to understand style without sacrificing scholarly integrity. He cites numerous scripture passages as well as Biblical scholars to support his thesis and lays out a much richer and more interesting eternity than most of us have ever imagined. I highly recommend this book. It will provoke interesting discussions and force you to closely examine your notion of heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven by Randy Alcorn.......2007-09-01

There are many books written on the subject Heaven, this book is the very best on that subject. The author stays with scripture like he should and makes the reading simple enough to stay interested. When you read this book it makes heaven beyond your wildest dreams. Its a place you don't want to miss.

Alcorn has done his homework. I am purchasing these as gifts. It's helpful, especially when someone is grieving the loss of a loved one!

The Lamb's Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth reawakens a surprising ancient view of the Eucharist, as the harbinger of the supernatural drama described by the New Testament book of Revelation. Catholic theologian Scott Hahn thinks that many worshippers receive the sacrament of communion without ever considering its links to the end of the world, the Apocalypse, and the Second Coming. Hahn wants to change our minds; he wants us to know that "The Mass--and I mean every single Mass--is heaven on earth." Literally. So, Hahn declares, "Now heaven has been unveiled for us with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ ... Jesus Christ Himself says to you: 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me' (Rv. 3:20)." Hahn's enthusiasm, as evident even from these short quotes, is considerable--and infectious. Furthermore, he delivers his arguments with great levity (demonstrated in chapter titles such as "Oath Meal"), which makes The Lamb's Supper quite a tasty read. --Michael Joseph Gross

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all catholics and those seeking truth.......2007-09-15

This is the most influential book I have ever read in my life, period. It will completely change the way you approach Mass and your day to day life.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the Mass and Revelation.......2007-08-23

We've tought a few classes using this as a textbook and it's great. We've even had non-Catholics appreciate the connections made in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-07-09

Until I read this book as a Protestant exploring the Catholic faith, I had no idea what all is happening in the Mass. This book opened a whole new world to me.

5 out of 5 stars An Oasis of Truth.......2007-06-27

This book by Scott Hahn reveals the hidden mysteries of the Mass. It has greatly helped me find refreshment in this topsy-turvy world. A virtual oasis in the midst of the modern desert. Now I appreciate the Mass, finding deeper meaning in the actions, symbols, garments and liturgy that one encounters in the Mass. It is so biblical and truly reveals God's love for mankind. A great treasure to own. Truly, heaven has come to earth.

5 out of 5 stars Thank the Lord for Scott Hahn.......2007-06-01

I first heard of Scott Hahn from my Scripture class teacher who was a student of Scott Hahn. The one thing he always talked about is how central Scripture is to everything that the Church believes and teaches. I saw this book on my grandmother's bookshelf and asked if I could borrow only because the name sounded familiar and it had a nice cover. I cannot remember the last time I had a read a book in one day. I have heard so many descriptions of the end times that people have come up with based on the Book of Revelation, but Scott Hahn makes evident the central role that the Book of Revelation plays in the most Sacred event in the Church. Hearing details about his conversion story is also very interesting and it seems that every book of his has another detail of his conversion. I haven'[t said much about the contents of this particular book, but that is because my words cannot compare to Scott Hahn's and it would be fruitful to buy or borrow a copy of this book as soon as you can!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Boring,Boring,Boring and Totally Uninspiring!.......2007-09-23

This was the first book on intercessory prayer that I "tried"(unsuccessfully) to read. It was so boring and unmoving that I searched here at Amazon for others on this subject and came across Ronald Dunn's and was able to "look inside". As soon as I read the table of contents I knew this was the book for me,and I ordered it on the spot, and have not regretted that. So much more understandable and seemingly heartfelt, it touched my heart, where this book left me completely numb!

I would not recommend this to anyone, and would instead heartily recommend "Don't Just Stand There,Pray Something:The Incredible Power Of Intercessory Prayer" by Ronald Dunn. Which encourages you to begin your work immediately as a prayer warrior,if that is what is on your heart, and if that is the case this book really fires up your zeal for it. I'm so happy that the Dutch Sheet's book was from the library and I had not wasted any money for it!

4 out of 5 stars Very good book. Better than Yancy's effort........2007-04-20

Better and more practical than Phillip Yancy's book on prayer. This book offers solid advice on how to pray and the importance of persistence.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Find.......2007-01-19

This book is a great tool for study and understanding on the topic of prayer. Dutch Sheets presents prayer concepts in an amazing and insightful way, which has truly had an impact on my prayer life. He has ideas and thought provoking beliefs that I had never heard before and after reading this book, I have bougth multiple copies as gifts for others.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on prayer ever written!.......2007-01-18

I have read many books on prayer and none have impacted my prayer life as much as this one. It gives you a new attitude towards the importance of prayer, and it gives you practical examples of how to transform your prayer life. It explains the authority every believer has in Christ and teaches how to walk in that authority. Very motivating!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely worth reading!.......2007-01-11

This book has taught me why I have to pray and more importantly:
inspired me to pray more!It also gave me a new understanding of my authority as praying child of God.

Download Description

"#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts has enchanted millions of readers with her moving, intimate tales of friendships made and hearts lost, of legends, lovers and longing. Now, in the second book in her bewitching Three Sisters Island trilogy, she returns to the haunting shores of New England-and to the lives of three passionate, powerful women. Ripley Todd just wants to live a quiet, peaceful kind of life. Her job as a sheriff's deputy keeps her busy and happy, and she has no trouble finding men when she wants them-which, lately, isn't all that often. She's perfectly content, except for one thing: she has special powers that both frighten and confuse her-and though she tries hard to hide them, she can't get them under control. Distraction soon arrives in the handsome form of MacAllister Booke-a researcher who's come to investigate the rumors of witchcraft that haunt Three Sisters Island. Right from the start, he knows there's something extraordinary about Ripley Todd. It's not just her blazing green eyes and her sultry smile. There's something else. Something he can detect, but she'll never admit. Fascinated by her struggle with her amazing abilities, he becomes determined to help her accept who she is-and find the courage to open her heart. But before Ripley and Mac can dream of what lies in the future, they must confront the pain of the past. For Three Sisters shelters centuries of secrets-and a legacy of danger that plagues them still."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not quite enough magic to make me believe.......2007-06-15

While I loved the first and the last trilogy book in the series, this one ran cold to me. Ripley could have been created as a character who, although, had grown up independent, tough, and with ambivalence about her powers, revealed some redeeming soft side which would have given her more "believe-ability" with her story line and the readers. she did nothing but B**ch at Mac, showng no civility, let alone warmth. The men I talked to said they would never had been tempted to pursue Ripley even if she was a super hot thing, which in reading did not indicate she was that far over the top to cause a man to lose his brain power anyway (sorry, but that was the consensus: Mia was drop dead, cannot help but stare gorgeous, and Nell was the adorable sweet girl -next-door, everyone loved her). I never saw Mac falling for Ripley. Her character, while moral in seeking justice, did so with a blindness of anger over personal issues. I would have found her more balanced and believable if she had been written with more depth, and more of a history of what happened,(introduced earlier in the story) and why the ambivalence remained with her as an adult. As another reader also mentioned, 10 years of holding a fighting grudge, on such a small island in a tight knit community, is too much to believe (and no one in the community ever noticed it?, or commented on this to Nell,Mac,and Logan? That was hard to believe as well.). In the next installment, she still has her hard edges, and lack of like-ability. when she announced she was pregnant, it was still with a tough tom boy seague. Tough to warm up to...I am glad the other two books carried it through to the conclusion.

5 out of 5 stars Island Getaway.......2007-05-13

As usual, Nora Roberts delivers another excellent series. This series was one of the first Nora Roberts books I discovered.

Since then, and yeah, I'm a guy, and I lift weights, and I'm a straight macho guy, ad nauseum, but I love Nora Robert's writings, I have read thirty five of her books in the last three months.

The ladies at my favorite restaurant enjoy talking to me about Nora Roberts. I have a couple of them reading Nora Roberts and one lady and I are exchanging different copies of her books.

Enjoy this series. It is one of her best. It has the best blend of magic, romance, good plot twists, and strong characterization. Her series creates a desire in you to pick up the atlas and start hunting down the island and it's inhabitants.

And guys...with Nora Roberts you just might gather a little insight into the minds of these amazing female creatures. One hint...bring lots of chocolate and never forget what outfit and scent she wore the first time you met her.

Nora...I'm about to figure you out!

3 out of 5 stars Wasn't as good as the first..........2007-03-23

I liked it, but there was less substance to the storyline. The story focuses this time on Ripley. The strong willed deputy. Living with her brother and Nell, Ripley still struggles with coming to terms with the gift she was given and her relationship with Mia. A whole new can of worms is opened. How does Ripley handle threats upon those who she loves? How does she handle something evil brewing inside her? Read it.. its quick!

5 out of 5 stars Love all of Nora's romance books.......2007-02-25

You can never go wrong with a Nora Roberts romance novel and this is just one more great one in the list.

2 out of 5 stars Reply is an Annoying Heroine.......2006-10-26

I enjoyed Dance upon the Air, Nell was a believable and easy to relaate to character, Mia is self-possessed and interesting with a little bit of mystique thrown in. Ripley on the otherhand, I found simply irritating, not so much bitchy as umbelievabley whinny. I understand that Nora Roberts was most likely trying to write her as the 'angry' the one who needed to learn control over her rage, but she came across as mostly whiney and childish. Not an enjoyable read.

3 out of 5 stars pretty good book.......2007-01-10

Good beginning and ending. Kind of lost me in the middle. A bit touchy, feelie.

5 out of 5 stars A good basic Introduction to TCM.......2006-11-10

For anyone looking for a basic, easy to understand introduction to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I can highly recommend this book. It focuses mainly of the five element theory of TCM, and it manages to explain a very complex concept in clear terms. It has nice self-test chapters to help the reader figure out their own predominant elements, and also offers good advice on simple herbal supplements and dietary advise based on the patterns.

However, it is very basic. If you are looking for more in-depth information on Traditional Chinese Medicine, or if you already have a basic understanding of the five elements, The Web that Has No Weaver is probably a better book to read, since it explains not only the five elements, but also the organ networks and their associated functions and spirits in much more depth.

I usually recommend Between Heaven and Earth to people who want to gain a basic understanding and introduction into the Chinese Taoist Philosophy that is the basis of Traditional Chinese Medicine. I think it is a great introductory text, and will make subsequent, more complexly written books much easier to understand.

1 out of 5 stars The book is a mish mosh.......2006-09-06

It's too bad this book is a mish mosh and that neophytes in Chinese medicine are not going to know this. Some of the material is very standard and authentic, but a lot of it is the authors' own invention. So be careful with this. If you want the real deal, this is not the book you want. A better introduction to standard Chinese medicine is Kaptchuk's classic, The Web That Has No Weaver.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to the Novice.......2005-10-04

I am a novice in the art of TCM and I do not speak or read chinese. This was an excellent guide for me in my studies in preparation to attend school for TCM and also how to get some practical benefit from my Chinese herbs. This was an Excellent Guide for the Novice.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the tenets of TCM.......2005-08-10

I recommend this book to all of my clients! With so much focus being placed on alternative therapies in health care, it staggers me that so much of the general public still thinks that acupuncture is for idiots acting as a human pincushion. While it is far from an instruction manual (which was never its intent), Between Heaven and Earth gives laypeople a simplified and elegant explanation of an ancient science. If you're looking for a definitive education in TCM, go to a university and get a degree. If you want an introduction to wellness through Chinese Medicine, read this book.

This book is very disapponting. The 100 places picked most of the times are over rated and the pictures in it are poor. Also the list forgets about magnificent places in the world, one of them is Angel Falls in Venezuela, the largest fall in the world in the middle of the jungle. I think it must e reviewed.
We all have opinions but I didnt enjoy this book at all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Travel Ideas, Beautiful Photos.......2006-11-12

I bought this book to get travel ideas. I was not disappointed. It included several terrific places that I've already gone to such as Paris and Cartagena, Colombia, several places I've already planned to go to such as Guilin, China and Kauai and dozens of beautiful places I had never known about before. Only 20 of the places are from the United States so it does a good job of depicting places from every continent except the south pole.

The photos, for the most part, are high quality and beautiful. The only drawback is that there is only one picture of each location with only a one paragraph description of each place. Although you will have to do more research on your own if you are interested in actually going there, this is a very good place to get started.

Another good book is "Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die" which only has 40 places, but has multiple photos of each place as well as a six to eight page description of each place. There's not that much overlap since only about 15 places are in both books.

2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2006-10-31

First, it took forever to get this book shipped and then when I did receive it - what a disappointment. Most of the photos are poor, lots of "noise" in most enlargments - which is very surprising for "Life". Second, there is very little written information.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely exquisite coffee table book.......2006-10-12

I ordered my copy direct from Time Life and it came in the mail yesterday; I was truly impressed; I heard about the Seychelles Islands, but who knew it was that lovely; the flat as pancake Maldive Islands impressed me as well; How they got through the tsunami is nothing short but a miracle; To see the pictures of these islands are beautiful. Closer to home, The Natchez Trace and how it started really impressed me to check it out; Of course, The Grand Canyon, Statue of Liberty(which I've been to) was all interesting; Highly recommended for the wanderlust among us;

Book Description

This thoughtful collection of prayers emerged from Brueggemann's thirty-five years of teaching in seminaries. Full of reflection, faith, and dialogue, they reveal another side of this gifted author from what his many readers are accustomed to. These deeply felt and sparklingly articulated prayers reflect a wide range of life experiences. As readers, we are taken from the depths of pain and loss to the heights of joy and praise. The author takes on life in its fullest as he utters his praise and lament, petition and thanksgiving. Brueggemann's prayers lead us to deeper commitment, deeper faith, and deeper reflection. The volume also includes an index of biblical allusions that will be useful for preachers as well as the general reader looking for the biblical roots of these fears, hopes, struggles, and aspirations.

They did a great job and got the book to me really fast, and it was in good condition.

5 out of 5 stars Prayer profound..........2005-06-25

I first encountered Walter Brueggemann as a scholar of the Hebrew scriptures/Old Testament through his monumental 'Theology of the Old Testament'. When I started seminary a few years after purchasing that volume, there was a class taught based on that book, so I got to know more about Brueggemann's scholarship in some detail. However, that was not all I and the other students learned in that class - we were fortunate enough to have a professor who knows Walter Brueggemann through both his scholarship and personally - some of the spirit that came across in that class is not readily accessible in scholarly tomes, but is very present in books such as this one, 'Awed to Heaven, Rooted in Earth.'

Brueggemann spent over 40 years as a teacher, first at Eden Seminary and then at Columbia Seminary, and it was his standard practice to begin each class with prayer (those untutored to the ways of seminary might be surprised to learn that this is not always a standard practice - my personal experience is that it occurs about 50% of the time). Brueggemann's prayers are both timely and timeless - they tap into the eternal elements of divine-human communication, but also express care and concern for current situation in which students, faculty, staff and the world find themselves. According to the editors, his prayers are 'subtle, surprising and daring, gentle and dread-filled [and] echo the poetic speech of the psalms and of the prophets.' As for Brueggemann himself, he states that to put such a collection together in print needs some justification, and he gives two - that much of prayer is 'careless and slovenly, and that what passes for spontaneity is in fact lack of preparation.' He also sees this collection as 'an act of gratitude', toward students, colleagues, and toward God.

These prayers read like poems - indeed, like the psalms, they can be multi-tasking as poems and prayers, and often could stand as hymn texts. They have rhythm and grace that is palpable. They have theological soundness and internal consistency with biblical themes even when such themes hold us in tension between divergent ideas. These prayers call upon themselves to 'move off the page', just as Brueggemann calls upon God (and our actions based upon God) to move off the page of scripture and into action in the world. Nothing subtle here! But indeed surprising and daring.

When I first discovered this book, I was in awe. It has quickly become a favourite, and just as quickly established itself as a book to which I return again and again, for inspiration and for a sense of what language I can use with integrity before God. Few books have made such an immediate impact on me as this one has. Prayer is often seen as something safe, something soothing, something secure - Brueggemann calls upon us as pray-ers to recognise that prayer can be a dangerous act. 'It is an awesome matter to voice one's life before God, and our lives should therefore be awesomely uttered.'

Amen and amen.

5 out of 5 stars prayers for sinners and saints and everyone in between.......2004-11-24

Once again, Dr. Brueggemann demonstrates with stunning beauty, the power of imagination, the power of entering the stories of life and of scripture, of suffering and joy and making it our own. If you struggle with words, if you wish your prayer life was more poetic, more reflective of the larger issues that lay at the doorstep and inside the church, then this is the book to read, I constantly turn to it when worship leading and teaching adult bible study because it focuses my thoughts, expands my spirit and teaches me how to pray.

5 out of 5 stars The words of a master in prayer........2004-05-23

If you want to know what Walter Brueggemann is about, read his prayers. Yes, his commentaries are profound, but his heart and soul are found in his prayers.

You will find, as I did, that he is a man who believes that God spoke and continues to speak. He is a man of the Word.

His prayers challenge, confront and comfort. They challenge us to listen for God's word to us - today, in our world. His prayers confront our hardness of heart and our complacency. Ultimately, Brueggemann's words comfort us by illuminating the steadfast faithfulness of God love for struggling people.

"Our lives are occupied territory... occupied by a cacophony of voices, and the din undoes us. In the daytime we have no time to listen, beset as we are by anxiety and goals and assignments and work, and in the night the voices are so confusing we can hardly sort out what could possibly be your voice from the voice of our mothers and fathers and our best friends and our pet projects, because they all sound so much like You. So give us ears. Amen."

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Prayers of a Scripture-formed Heart.......2003-09-03

As a Pentecostal believer, I am fairly new to the art of crafting prayers in Scriptural reflection. Spontaneous prayer is emphasized in my tradition to the point that joining others in the praying of faithful speech has been thrilling new ground. These prayers, birthed in the heart of a tremendous scholar and righteous man, are transforming utterances which have challenged my heart and the hearts of many with which I have prayed them.

The beloved professor has been surprised in the past to see where his work has gone and how it has been applied. Surely Dr. Brueggemann allows their publication not so that they can be read, but so that they can be joined. A wonderful collection indeed!

Book Description

Since earliest times, humanity has pondered the incomprehensible mysteries of the universe, life...and the afterlife. Was there somewhere on Earth where, after death, mortal man could join the immortal Gods? Where was this place? By whom was it established? And does it still exist today?

After years of painstaking research -- combining recent archaeological discoveries with ancient texts and artifacts -- noted scholar Zecharia Sitchin has identified the legendary Land of the Gods...and provided astounding new revelations about the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx, and other mysterious monuments whose true meanings and purposes have been lost for eons.

I have read Sitchin's first work, the 12th planet, which lead me to this one. And it is an amazing read. Sitchin presents evidence one by one, tells you various stories and myths, and in light of the scientific knowledge we now have, provides the reader with a new "perhaps it was" explanation.

Recommended it to everyone I know

5 out of 5 stars The Stairway to Heaven (Earth Chronicles, No. 2).......2007-01-12

Another great book by Zachariah Sitchen, I have read all eight books of his Earth chronicles and they are all very mind boggling.

5 out of 5 stars Not such a stretch if you Think!.......2004-07-15

Mr. Sitchin has nothing to gain by espousing pseudoscience or pseudohistory. He would only stand to lose. Ancient History as a discipline has been proclaimed true to a great extent by proclamation that the "ancients"told us all. This is all well and good as a baseline. I have no quarrel with Herodotus or Tacitus.
Read the bibliographies in this series. These ARE NOT the idle ramblings of a 'crank". If you truly pay attention, you will see the obvious scholarly work that has been done. Only the intellectually insecure will be intimidated and resort to common mockery.

If nothing else, this should send you into deeper studies of the ancient Near East. You won't be sorry. This is thought provoking at the very least and definitely entertaining to the casual reader and the more imaginative history buffs.

Look at and think about civilization, pre-Egyptian, pre-Indus Valley(?) and you will learn quite a bit. Better yet, you will be driven to learn more by yourself!

1 out of 5 stars Shame on Avon and Amazon.com.......2004-02-08

Do not buy the mass market edition. Shame on Avon Publishing!!! The type is so small that it is virtually unreadable, and any graphics, maps or diagrams cannot be distinguished. Pay the extra money to buy the edition published for Earthlings, not for Lilliputians.
Most people will be drawn to the cheaper version offered by this on-line retailer, so shame on the on-line retailer for even carrying this edition. I am not exaggerating. The book is UNREADABLE.

Book Description

While walking on the beach with his Labrador, poet and literature professor Scott Cairns ran headlong into his midlife crisis. A fairly common experience among men nearing the age of fifty, midlife crises are usually manifested in the form of sports cars and younger women; not so for this Baptist turned Eastern Orthodox. Cairns had a realization that as the advancement of his spiritual life was moving at a snail's pace, time was running out, and his crisis emerged in the form of a desperate need to seek out prayer.

Told with wit and exquisite prose, Slow Pilgrim is the story of Scott's spiritual journey to the mystical island of Mt. Athos. With twenty monasteries and thirteen sketes scattered across its sloping terrain, the Holy Mountain was the perfect place for Scott to seek out a prayer father and to discover the stillness of the true prayer life. His narrative takes the reader from a beach in Virginia to the most holy Orthodox monasteries in the world to a monastery in Arizona and back again as Scott struggles to find his prayer path. His story includes accounts of the relationships he forges with several different monks and priests along the way, as well as life–long friendships he makes with other pilgrims.

2 out of 5 stars Long trip to nowhere .......2007-04-12

Ever since reading "The Holy Mountain" by Kyriacos Markides, I've been fascinated by the monks who live in the ancient monasteries of Greece, so I bought this book with great anticipation, and finished the first chapter before I ever left the bookstore.

But I'm sorry to say that Short Trip To The Edge quickly stalled. Cairnes is by many accounts a fine Christian poet, but his writing here is surprisingly unpoetic and at times redundant as we're told in almost every chapter that an experience is "palpable" or "sweet." We don't need to be told every time he stopped to "venerate the icons."

But most annoying is Cairnes' neurotic, self-absorbed quest to find a spiritual father who can help him develop a life of prayer. He makes three trips to Greece, and one visit to a monastery in Arizona to find the elusive father, but comes up empty.

Most Christians struggle in their prayer life and I do appreciate Cairne's honesty, but I couldn't help but wonder what would happen if he took the focus off himself. Never once does he ponder Jesus' command to serve others.

Is journeying to Mt. Athos three times to find a spiritual father what Jesus had in mind when he said "take up your cross and follow me"? Cairnes seems to think that the goal of a Christian life is to "find peace." I almost felt sorry for him as he describes waiting hours for a meeting with a potential spiritual father, only to be given some flippant advice.

Short Trip To The Edge is a case study in the dangers of idolotry. Despite the subtitle of the book, Cairne's story makes clear that no place on earth will ever resemble Heaven.

5 out of 5 stars A glimpse of heaven with earth mixed in.......2007-03-04

Since I am a woman, I cannot personally reap the spiritual benefits of a pilgrimage to Mt. Athos. However, Scott Cairns' account of his visits to the Holy Mountain during his sabbatical year as a professor at the Univ. of Missouri allowed me to vicariously experience what it must be like for an Orthodox convert to go there. He describes the good, the bad, and the ineffably divine of what it is like for a modern-day pilgrim to pay a visit to the heart of Orthodox monasticism. The focus of his pilgrimage is his endeavor to find a spiritual father who can guide him in how to grow closer to God, specifically through the Jesus Prayer.
Cairns deftly interweaves the physical realities and legalities ("Let that be a lesson for somebody") of getting there and getting around while, at the same time, describing his impressions and feelings about finally arriving at The Mountain. His gifts as a poet allow him to find the perfect word to capture his experience or the description of his environment.
There are humorous but instructive moments, such as when he and his friend Nick decide to walk to a monastery rather than ride in a vehicle, or when he describes a pilgrim he calls "the sheriff" who demands that everyone follow the rules while eating. There are also glimpses of the meeting of Heaven and Earth on Mt. Athos as Cairns describes kissing the warm left hand of St. Mary Magdalene, the spice-scented foot of St. Anne (accompanied by "a curious sweetness, a warming of the heart") and the fragrant brow of the skull of St. Andrew.
I was helped in my own spiritual journey by Cairns' complete honesty. He describes the time when he was finally able to have a moment with an elder and feels like he made a mistake by asking the wrong question. He also writes of other situations that an Orthodox convert might find embarrassing when centuries-old protocol has been breached. I could relate.
Cairns finds much guidance towards what he is seeking, and his journey is instructive for anyone who is also trying to draw closer to God. (A similar account is "The Mountain of Silence" by Kyriacos C. Markides," another contemporary writer.) My only disappointment is that this book was not twice as long. Maybe more visits by Cairns to the Holy Mountain will produce a sequel?
