Delivery Date.......2007-02-14

When I first ordered this the delivery date said january 8th (order 12/28) when I checked again a few days later I was very upset to see that the date had changed to the 10th. I was on winter break and need this book for the 9th which was the day I was heading back to school. It ended up arriving even before the 8th which mad me very happy but I just wasn't happy about how amazon changes the dates all time. I know there isn't much they can do if it is in transit but if that is the case they should assume later dates instead of changing it everytime the date is approaching.

I bought this for my 15yo future fashion designer. She has made several wardrobes with it. My 11yo sneaks it away to make things in the middle of the night. I need to buy another.
The book contains wonderful templates for designing clothes, but the best part are the pages that tell how to modify the templates to design anything your heart desires.
The paper and trims are wonderful, but my girls have discovered that scrapbook paper, and our many crafty odds and ends also make great clothes. Klutz also sells a refill pack with more paper and hangars.

This book was a lot of fun for my son and I. Readers are told that four gangs of forgers have replaced most of an art museum's paintings, and only we can help figure out which are real and which are forged. Using a magnifying glass, you compare 8" by 5" four color paintings to 4" by 4" originals, looking for changes (such as missing items or objects with different coloration). This allows you to fill in a chart which allows you to deduce the forgers, the snitch and the unchanged paintings, thereby saving the museum. 34 painintgs are here, by Van Eyck, Piero, Uccello, Botticelli, Raphael, Leonardo, Gossaert, Massys, Holbein, Marinus, Brueghel, Avercamp, Brugghen, Rembrandt, Steenwyck, Velde, Hooch, Vermeer, Chardin, Perronneau, Gainsborough, Turner, Constable, Watteau, Os, Delaroche, Ingres, Morisot, Degas, Monet, Rousseau, Seurat, Van Gogh and Picasso. I have found that this book sets the stage for helping children to really look at art. The "fraud puzzle" presented in the book makes the children really spot unique techniques of the artists in several different styles. They are able to see what makes one style of art unique from others over the centuries as styles changed.

I bought this book for my very bright 10 year old granddaughter's birthday. My friend who is a librarian had bought it for her 12 year old niece and said she loved it and has asked if there are anymore in the series which there are. My daughter taped the answer pages together so she couldn't look at the answers and says that my granddaughter can't put it down. She loves it and I am willing to bet she will ask for the next in the series when she finishes Art Fraud Detective. This book is a great way to foster interest in art and artists.

This book is a great way to familiarize children (and adults) with some of the greatest artists in history. Searching for clues as to whether or not each masterpiece is a fraud causes one to closely study the pieces in great detail. My daughters love looking at the art and doing the detective work. They usually want to go through several pieces each time we pull this book out. I highly recommend it to people of all ages!

My seven-year-old son says that he wished it were more entertaining. I guess I feel somewhat disappointed that he races through to detect clues to determine the frauds without reading the artist write-ups. But it's a good introduction to art history and appreciation and it certainly captivates those who love to read mysteries.

Inadequate.......2007-09-25

After all the rave reviews for this course, I hate to rain on the parade. However, I feel that some crucial parts are missing from the other reviews. Yes, it's a good book and for exactly the reasons other reviewers have mentioned. The grammar is very well defined and Afrikaans is a remarkably easy language to learn.

Unfortunately, this books comes with a major problem. No wordlists! In almost any other Colloquial or Teach Yourself course, each dialogue is followed by a word list containing the words used in the dialogue. That's the way you study the words and enlarge your vocabulary. Not so in this course. For the first few lessons, the dialogues are followed by an English translation. This isn't a very good substitute, especially not as word order is very different in Afrikaans. You can't be sure whích English words mean what, so you can only learn phrases like a parrot. After a few lessons, even this English translation is dropped and your left with dialogues in Afrikaans with no wordlist nor translation! How is this different from reading a newspaper in Afrikaans and having a dictionary to check up each word? Not at all, and that's free on-line.

I usually prefer Colloquial courses over Teach Yourself, but in this case I strongly recommend the excellent course Teach Yourself Afrikaans. The author of that course didn't try to get off too easy by ignoring the word lists and the result is that Teach Yourself Afrikaans is an excellent book. The author of this book was lazy, and it is the reader who pays the cost. So Afrikaans is an easy language, but this book makes everything it can to make learning it harder. Teach Yourself Afrikaans makes it easier.

Awesome course........2007-06-12

This is, hands down, THE course to have if you're aiming to learn Afrikaans through self-study. The textbook provides a comprehensive amount of material for beginners in the language, and it also works well as a refresher course if you're looking to brush up on your skills. The dialogues fall more easily into the "everyday life" category than in the "exclusively for tourists" section (one of the major drawbacks of other Afrikaans courses available), and the rate of speech used by the native speakers throughout most of the course is the closest to everyday rhythm that a learner could ask for. The accompanying audio is clear and easy to follow (there are a few points where the speakers switch up a word or two, but it's very easy to identify these points and understand what was said : one example, "ek is bekommerd oor jou" is said as "ek bekommer my oor jou". Easy to notice, and both are grammatically correct -- it won't throw you when it comes).

A huge advantage to the language itself is that it's very similar to English, so many of the words will be easy to recognize. The word order might be a little difficult to pick up, but don't let this put you off -- this course will put a strong foundation under your ability to speak and write the language, and becoming more proficient in Afrikaans can be a breeze once you thoroughly complete this course. Mimicking the native speakers is sound advice; once you can speak confidently and sound authentic, it's so much easier to progress and take on more vocabulary and to get a better feel for the flow of the language.

I can't rave enough about this course. As an experienced self-study learner of several languages, I can say that this is one of the best courses out there for beginners and intermediate learners alike.

Great book for an easy language.......2006-03-14

I've studied several languages and I can say that - as a native English speaker - Afrikaans is the EASIEST language to learn. This book is a great introduction to Afrikaans - the easiest language for a native English (and Dutch) speaker and also the easiest and most logical and analytical Germanic language. After mastering a working knowledge of Afrikaans with this book, I was able to converse with South Africans and Dutch speakers. Prior to this, I only learned/studied Latin-based languages (Spanish and Portuguese). Now, I can read/understand Afrikaans and Dutch (and more German than I thought I could). I got this book on a whim (curious about other Germanic languages as a native English speaker focusing on Iberian languages) and have now fallen in love with the other languages in my native West-Germanic language family.

A good start........2005-09-06

Unlike most of the other titles in this series, Colloquial Afrikaans provides the new learner with a solid knowledge of the basic grammar, essential for a further study. The plural of nouns and the flexion of adjectives should be covered more thouroughly however, but this course with its lively dialogues and everyday vocabulary is one of the best one could choose to start that interesting language.

I ordered these books a few months ago and I am bitter to find out how much the price went down. I think these books are worth more. This is such a bargain. It contains great collection of street art. I am proud to have these books in my collection. If you have any interest in street art, don't hesitate to get it- especially at this price! I'm thinking about getting another set so I can give it to friends as gifts.

Two Great Books for One Great Price.......2007-04-28

First of all, the total cost of these books at retail value is $65, and they're being offered together for $20. Any bargain that good is worth a look at the very least. But I would be willing to buy both these books at list price or even higher, and there are many reasons why. Let's start with Graffiti World.
Graffiti World is the most all-around, full-circle comprehensive book on graffiti I have ever laid my eyes on. Every image is bursting with detail and gives clues as to the style of both the region and the artist. Many people have said that it does not cover every artist, and leaves ones completely out from the past, but the fact of the matter is that graffiti evolves at such a rate because of the fact that it is constantly being covered over and taken down. There is less reference the further you look into the past and as a result the art form evolves at an astonishing rate. This is the primary reason that artists from older generations are not mentioned; few of their works remain and to take pictures from another source would just be making someone pay for images they could have obtained otherwise.
There are a few debatable incongruencies with the history of graffiti, such as Ganz implying that it started in New York at the same time as Philadelphia, when it actually started in Philadelphia first and then moved on to New York.
What I love about the book is that it doesn't just showcase the artists, it hand picks the most influential and unique that are known the most throughout the world and shows their specific style and also commonalities in the region in which they produce their art. It also shows people who came from another field into graffiti or people who were into graffiti at one point but are now in a different field of art or design. Most of the readers who flip through this book will recognize some of the names, a few will recognize most of the names, but I doubt there are many who will recognize all of the names, and that's what makes it so great.
Graffiti Women is a vital book in showcasing the talent of graffiti all over the world because moreso than many other forms, the gender divide has created individual styles that are very distinctive. Also, just as with males, specific people have created styles which are like none other, most famously Swoon, who was actually a co-author of the book, and uses the medium of paper in Brooklyn as well as London, Berlin and other areas.
In short, the two books are vital because they look at every aspect of the art form-all mediums, all regions, all artists, abstract artists and even artists that could be classified as minimalistic. It looks at the world of graffiti as a whole and then breaks it down to show how each part became the style it is known for now. It analyzes every artist, every region. It opens up an underground world for the public to see.

I was always interested in street art but had only really been exposed to a small amount of it. These books gave me path into this world. Upon deciding to buy these books I was concerned that it would be an annual of the same bombing you might see fresh on the side of the train tracks, however I was pleasantly surprised to find that It depicted a vast array of work with theme of the medium not just the style.

This book will inspire you and also give you a new perspective on graffiti, street art, and art in general. 1. All 49 sheets are single side (One side it is white and other side it is colored).

The Ultimate Face Painting Book in Many Ways.......2006-10-31

This book has been around a while now. It still looks as new, vibrant and current as the first copy I was given as a gift over 10 years ago. I think it has been that long or longer probably. The point is that this book brought my family together. My dad is a pretty good artist or at least better than the average person. He will never admit that but this book put him to the test. My mom tried painting faces at one of my first birthday parties that I was old enough to remember. She grabbed this book, set up in my bedroom, she sat in a kiddies chair and let the kids come on up one at a time! Let's just say she was not as gifted an artist as she was hoping she may be. I remember my dad looking on and he suggested something with a certain brush stroke or color or whatever. The next thing you know he is sitting down in that tiny kid's chair hunched over painting faces of little kids and the line was line was backing out to the living room. He let the kids look through the book and pick out faces they wanted. I am certain it was a challenge for him. But I must honestly say that this book gave him the tools he needed to rise for the occasion. Needless to say the whole experience was a success on all levels. It was my dad who bought this book. He likes books. This book caught his eye. I remember him telling me how well designed and conceived and executed it was. He purchased it on speculation as a reference as he does with most books. He always says that you never know when you just may need it. Well, this book has a special place in my bookcase next to My Little Golden Books, The Wizard of Oz and some other books for my childhood. You never stop learning from the best. Oh yes this book is quite different from those, but you can still take it out return or learn a thing or two you may have missed. And this book is one of the best. Practically speaking, this book has everything you need to put a smile on a kid's face. If you think you can't paint or put a smile on that that little kid you should take a look at this book. Oh yes, my mom finally learned that she too could paint with a little help from this book As for me, my turn to pick up that brush will come some day. Many thanks are in order.

I gave this kit as a gift, and it was a huge hit. My cousin said her two little girls were zebras all weekend. Lots of fun for the money.

Face Painting.......2006-08-01

This book is an excellent take-a-long for any face painter professionally but is also fantastic for the beginner. It not only comes with face paints but the pictures are basic enough for any birthday party or event. The spiral binding lets it lay flat so you can look at the picture as you draw it on the face. Excellent!

Great paints, but it would be nice to have more ideas in the book for uninspired people like me.

If you're a graphic designer, you only need browse this excellent book for a moment or two to realize that Russian artists in the 1920's and 30's knew more about how to make a great poster than any American has ever known before or since.

Every poster designer and film buff loves American designer Saul Bass and I'm no exception, but Bass borrowed a lot from these early Russian designers like Rodchenko, and its no wonder--they were an incredible wellspring of creativity. Open any single page in this collection and you'll find a hundred great ideas regarding use of color, perspective, and mixing photography with illustration. Every designer should have this book at hand for reference. Unfortunately many of these early films have been lost or destroyed over time, but one wonders if the best part hasn't been saved--these glorious posters. I can't say enough good things about this book.

Fun and informative.......2001-12-04

I'm not a collector of Russian/Soviet film posters, so all the liner notes could be complete bullocks, but the book is brilliantly large and appears to really want to give the straight story (for instance it gives the title that the artists gave the posters not the movie title associated w/ it). I've only seen a few of the movies it covers so I bought it solely for the art. If you're a fan of the clean Bauhaus style this book is for you.

Susan Pack's overview of the Russian avant-garde film poster, is a visual delight, and a welcome addition to the library of anyone interested in graphic design. This book is a handsome collection of pre-Communist posters from such notable graphic artists as the Stenberg brothers, and Alexander Rodchenko, as well as many other lesser known, yet talented artisans. Anyone familiar with Russian graphics of this period are in for a treat, and those seeing them for the first time will soon become addicted to their graphic impact, and innovative type treatments. A friend I've shown it to has warned me to keep an eye on it, lest it mysteriously disappear!
