5 out of 5 stars Egyptian palaces.......2007-02-21

I do not know how Ms. Johnston managed to take all this gorgeous pictures and publish a book so outstanding considering the fact that some of these villas are not longer opened to the public.
There is so much beauty in private villas.I remember some of my friend's houses, looked like palaces with gorgeous cherry wood, stairs that could envy Gone with the Wind movie. All The wood teak, ebony,Italian tiles and Greek original statues.
I strongly suggest purchasing this book,as you will see how people lived in this wonderful places.
There are much more villas to be photographed by I guess it is no longer allowed.

5 out of 5 stars Of Pleasures and Palaces..........2006-11-07

EGYPTIAN PALACES AND VILLAS may just be one of the more sumptuous books available on the always mysterious land of Egypt. For those of us who crave visiting the Alexandria of Lawrence Durrell or just having an inside view of the exotic pleasure domes of this bewitching country, then look no further.

Shirley Johnston has a talent for writing about countries in away that is more than a travelogue or picture book. Not that her books are impoverished pictorially: photographer Sherif Sonbol assists her in over 170 fine photographs of the splendors that Johnston explores. Within the cover of this Abrams book are views of palaces in Cairo, homes in upper Egypt that are directly lifted replicas of palazzos along the Grand Canal of Venice, treasures both ancient and contemporary that have not been available for viewing until this insightful volume.

Johnston's writing style is seductive, polished, and informed. This beautifully designed and produced book is a treasure trove for all those who dream of the days when wealth and Egypt - and mystery - were synonymous. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, November 06

4 out of 5 stars Places rarely seen .......2006-08-25

Almost all books on Egypt have photographs only of the antiquities. It is rare that the public is allowed to see the inside of most of the places included in this book, and it is a privilege to see photographs of them. The narrative is well done and very interesting.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring collection of photographic and informational documentation of historical and modern Egyptian architecture .......2006-06-05

Deftly authored by Shirley Johnston with help from Sherif Sonbol, Egyptian Palaces And Villas: Pashas, Khedives, And Kings is an inspiring collection of photographic and informational documentation of historical and modern Egyptian architecture and the progressive means by which it has come to be. Book Description

This book is an investigation into the sphere of production and use of two related bilingual magical handbooks found as part of a larger collection of magical and alchemical manuscripts around 1828 in the hills surrounding Luxor, Egypt. Both handbooks, dating to the Roman period, contain an assortment of recipes for magical rites in the Demotic and Greek language. The library which comprises these two handbooks is nowadays better known as the Theban Magical Library.

The book traces the social and cultural milieu of the composers, compilers and users of the extant spells through a combination of philology, sociolinguistics and cultural analysis. To anybody working on Greco-Roman Egypt, ancient magic, and bilingualism this study is of significant importance.

Readership: All those interested in ancient magic, social and cultural history of Greco-Roman Egypt, bilingualism, intellectual history, as well as Egyptologists, classicists, historians of religion.

    Product Description

More than 4,500 years after its completion virtually everything is known about Khufu's pyramid except for the most important fact: Its method of construction. At present there are no answers to the mysteries of this colossal monument: 146.70 meters in height (the world's tallest building until the nineteenth century). 230.60 meters square base, 2.6 million cubic meters in volume, and 5,500,000 tons in weight spread uniquely over more than 220 layers. This book solves the riddles of Khufu's pyramid by combining archaeological information from distinguished researchers, and a professional architect s approach. This monument set many precedents, such as it was the first building in history to use integrated technical means for its construction - and in its architecture. After studying in detail all of the components of the pyramid - materials, tools, transportation and human strength - Mr. Houdin pieces together the extraordinary planning and organization, the technical skill, and the machines which allowed this great pyramid to rise over a period on twenty-one years, and last until today.

5 out of 5 stars A thoughtful conclusion and a bibliography round out this remarkable examination........2007-05-13

"Khufu: The Secrets Behind The Building Of The Great Pyramid" by Jean-Pierre Houdin is a unique study of the Great Pyramid of Egypt that combines historic photographs with computer generated 'blueprints' of the pyramid's structure with an informed and informative commentary text. Author and pyramid expert Jean-Pierre Houdin begins with a succinct historical summary of Egyptian pyramid building before the Khufu structure. Then provides a general introduction to the Khufu structure including the builders, building disciplines, and building technologies engaged in its planning and construction. Special attention is given to the King's Chamber, the Khufu ramps and passageways, and so much more. Of special note is the 'First Clues' section which includes microgravimetry, the northeast notch, 'ghost' ramps, and characteristics of certain course. A thoughtful conclusion and a bibliography round out this remarkable examination. "Khufu: The Secrets Behind The Building Of The Great Pyramid" is a strongly recommended and seminal addition to university level Egyptology and Archaeology reference collections.

      Book Description

The painted and relief-cut walls of ancient Egyptian tombs and temples record an amazing continuity of customs and beliefs over nearly 3,000 years. Even the artistic style of the scenes seems unchanging, but this appearance is deceptive. In this work, Gay Robins offers convincing evidence, based on a study of Egyptian usage of grid systems and proportions, that innovation and stylistic variation played a significant role in ancient Egyptian art. Robins thoroughly explores the squared grid systems used by the ancient artists to proportion standing, sitting, and kneeling human figures. This investigation yields the first chronological account of proportional variations in male and female figures from the Early Dynastic to the Ptolemaic periods. Robins discusses in detail the proportional changes underlying the revolutionary style instituted during the Amarna Period. She also considers how the grid system influenced the composition of scenes as a whole. Numerous line drawings with superimposed grids illustrate the text.

        Book Description

Presented here are a wide variety of objects - sculpture, relief, papyri, ostraca, jewelry, cosmetic objects, and funerary items - in a variety of media, including stone, wood, terra cotta, ivory, gold, glass, and papyrus, each categorized according to its use in ancient culture. From objects belonging to the king and housed in the temple to the tools of daily life used by artists and nobles to ritual objects concerning death and the afterlife, the treasures collected here are a testament to the rich, vibrant, and captivating culture of the ancient Egyptians.

The British Museum possesses one of the world's foremost collections of Egyptian antiquities. In Temples and Tombs, readers are presented with a rare opportunity to glimpse the collection's renowned masterpieces and treasures little known outside the museum walls. The eighty-five objects featured within these pages span a full range of pharaonic history - from shortly before the First Dynasty, about 3100 B.C., to the Roman occupation of the fourth century A.D. - and cover each of the four periods into which ancient Egyptian history is divided: Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, New Kingdom, and the Late Period.

This fully illustrated book accompanies a major traveling exhibition organized by the American Federation of Arts and the British Museum.

        4 out of 5 stars a professional discussion.......2002-05-08

Pyramid building, according to the author, should be placed not in the context of only Ancient Egyptian technology, but rather in that of Near Eastern technology. This book is devoted to understanding the methods used by the Ancient Egyptians to build the pyramids. Numerous illustrations and excellent evidence complete this professional, believable and backed-up discussion, which will be of much use to interested readers.

        Book Description

        Introduction by Anthony Brandt.

“Feverishly we cleared away...the passage before the doorway, until we had only the clean sealed doorway before us.... We made a tiny breach in the top left hand corner to see what was beyond.

There was naturally short suspense for those present who could not see, when Lord Carnarvon said to me `Can you see anything,' I replied to him `Yes, it is wonderful'.... Our sensations and astonishment are difficult to describe as the better light revealed to us the marvellous collection of treasures: two strange ebony-black effigies of a King, gold sandalled, bearing staff and mace, loomed out from the cloak of darkness; gilded couches in strange forms, lion-headed, Hathor-headed, and beast infernal...strange black shrines with a gilded monster snake appearing from within...a golden inlaid throne.... Our sensations were bewildering and full of strange emotion. Was it a tomb or merely a cache? A sealed doorway between the two sentinel statues proved there was more beyond and with the numerous cartouches bearing the name of Tutankhamen...there was little doubt that there behind was the grave of that Pharaoh.”

Howard Carter did not live long enough to write further about his finds, and The Tomb of Tutankhamen stands as his only record of the extraordinary discovery. Abridged from the original three volumes, this National Geographic Adventure Classics edition features 25 black-and-white photos taken at the time of the excavation, as well as a map of the Valley of the Kings and the tomb. This classic adventure tells the story of a journey that may never be repeated—a trip back through 3,000 years to discover the life—and death—of a pharaoh.

5 out of 5 stars A riveting account by the man himself.......2006-07-10

This book is impossible to put down. It's Howard Carter's own account, written between 1923 and 1933, while he was at work on Tutankhamen's tomb. Although I half expected a dry, scholarly account, this work reads like a novel by Elizabeth Peters. Carter conveys not only the facts of his fabulous discovery. He makes you feel that you're experiencing this 10 year saga with him--from the excitement of opening the tomb, the awe inspired by its spectacular contents, the difficulties involved in their removal and preservation, down to the annoyance and inconvenience caused by the sudden avalanche of tourists visiting the site and trying to get tours of the tomb.

When reading this book, bear in mind that it's Carter's own memoirs, written at the time. Intervening years and subsequent scholorship have, of course, changed (and hopefully improved) our understanding of the subject.

Also, although this volume contains a few (extremely interesting) black and white photographs taken during the excavation, you'll find yourself wishing for a more complete photographic record of the artifacts to go along with Carter's very detailed descriptions. I recommend getting yourself a really nice coffee table-type picture book of the tomb contents that you can refer to while reading Carter's book.

5 out of 5 stars The Tomb of Tut.Ankh.Amen: The Annex and Treasury.......2006-07-03

If your a serious fan of King Tut and Egyptology, this book is a must. Part III of Howard Carter's three part series, it gives execellent detail on the excavation of the tomb and everything that goes on around it. It will give you a greater appreciation of just what went into the original discovery and it's preservation. Learn more about what we now take for granted.

5 out of 5 stars Carter's Original Still the Best!.......2001-04-06

Howard Carter's stunning discovery in the desert and his excavation of the two stone chambers reads like an adventure novel. It was obviously written in 1930's language, but this new color edition is a wonderful asset to anyone's bookshelf. Thank you Duckworth for bringing this one back to life!
