Book Description

How to Draw a Dragon: "Cautiously approach the dragon, offer it a piece of candy or a little sister, and draw while it happily munches away."

From the creator of the wildly popular website NeonDragonArt.com, DRAGONART shows you how to create awesome, delightful and frightening beasts, armed only with a pencil and ink pen. You'll begin your quest by conquering a super-easy dragon that even the most foolish of ogres could draw. You'll forge onward to discover simple secrets and spiffy tricks for making creatures friendly or fierce, sorrowful or cynical… drawing them from all different perspectives, in flight or at rest (so vain, those dragons - they love to strike a pose!). You'll also learn how to incorporate various details to make each beast original.

Because dragons enjoy having others around to terrorize, disembowel and occasionally hang out with, this book will also teach you how to create a whole cast of creatures, including mythical griffins, guardian gargoyles and deadly basilisks. All this within the curiously compelling, beautifully beastly and brightly colored pages that you will soon hold in your hands, which by now are no doubt trembling with keen anticipation. So quit dragon your feet! (Ugh, wyrms hate puns!) Kindly buy this dragon favorite and make your wildest, wickedest, fire-breathingest fantasies come true!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT HOW TO BOOK.......2007-10-03

My kids have always been frustrated with "how to draw" books. I don't know what it is about how Neon explains things, but not only can they get the instructions, but the results are great! Conversational tone, can-do attitude? I'd expect something with two heads, four limbs and wings to be harder to draw than your basic horse, but they can do it! Brava!

4 out of 5 stars Dragon art: How to Draw Fantastic Dragons and Fantasy Creatures.......2007-09-05

The examples in the book are very good but for the more advance young artist. The pictures would also be good for copying and using as coloring for younger artists. Would think this book is more for about 10 years and up.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice book . . . .......2007-08-16

This book is wonderful. It's fun to look at even if you're not in it for the instructional value it has. What makes it unique is that it gives the reader a little history on each creature.
I wouldn't consider this a 'beginners' book as some of the techniques are slightly advanced, but I think anyone can benefit from what this book offers.
This book would be very beneficial to tattoo artists.

5 out of 5 stars Dragonart: How to Draw Fantastic Dragons and Fantasy Creatures.......2007-07-24

Great book... I have not used it that much yet but it has helped with side views of characters.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book!.......2007-06-26

This is a beautiful and amazing book. The pictures are of excellent quality and the pages are colorful, thick and glossy. I purchased this book as a gift for a 13 year old girl who likes dragons, but who has no training in drawing or art. When this book arrived at my house, I wanted to keep it for myself I was so impressed with it! When the girl unwrapped this book, her face immediately lit up! The next day, her mom reported to me that she'd been up until 3 a.m. going through the book! The following weekend, the girl had drawn several nice pictures of dragons and she was still carrying the book around. We went to another kind of party with lots of kids, dancing, music etc. etc. But I could hardly believe my eyes an hour into the party. Because the vast majority of the young people at the party, aged 11-18, were all sitting at a table, quietly going through the book and drawing dragons! There they sat, enthralled for hours on end. It was like magic! I think that any kid (aged 10+ maybe?) or any adult who likes fantasy creatures would enjoy this book. The book contains information about fantasy creatures (the different kinds etc.) which is why I think the concept works so well. It mixes informational content about the art of sketching, with the anatomical features of dragons and fantasy creatures. So kids (and people interested in fantasy creatures) are as interested in the text and the skill involved, as they are in the actual pictures. And boy do I feel great about getting the right gift for a 13 year old girl. Do you realize how hard they are to buy for?

Book Description

From the author of the classic Human Anatomy for Artists comes this user-friendly reference guide featuring over five hundred original drawings and over seventy photographs. Designed for painters, sculptors, and illustrators who use animal imagery in their work, Animal Anatomy for Artists offers thorough, in-depth information about the most commonly depicted animals, presented in a logical and easily understood format for artists--whether beginner or accomplished professional. The book focuses on the forms created by muscles and bones, giving artists a crucial three-dimensional understanding of the final, complex outer surface of the animal. Goldfinger not only covers the anatomy of the more common animals, such as the horse, dog, cat, cow, pig, squirrel, and rabbit, but also the anatomy of numerous wild species, including the lion, giraffe, deer, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, elephant, gorilla, sea lion, and bear. Included are drawings of skeletons and how they move at the joints, individual muscles showing their attachments on the skeleton, muscles of the entire animal, cross sections, photographs of live animals, and silhouettes of related animals comparing their shapes and proportions. He offers a new and innovative section on the basic body plan of four-legged animals, giving the reader a crucial conceptual understanding of overall animal structure to which the details of individual animals can then be applied. The chapter on birds covers the skeleton, muscles and feather patterns. The appendix presents photographs of skulls with magnificent horns and antlers and a section on major surface veins. Incredibly thorough, packed with essential information, Animal Anatomy for Artists is a definitive reference work, an essential book for everyone who depicts animals in their art.

Excellent reference book. 5 stars from the first to last page.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest animal anatomy book out there for artist.......2007-02-07

I got Goldfinger's human anatomy book, but in comparison, this is even better. Great multitude of drawings and diagrams of different species of animals, from bones to muscle to final skin with great angles. Highly recommend it.

And many of the reviews here were very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most exhaustive references for artist's animal anatomy.......2006-05-21

WHOA! An animal-anatomy-for-artists book that I haven't seen before!?? I did a doubletake in the library when I found it. It's a GOOD one, too! Better than most of my animal anatomy books put together! It takes both possible approaches: the first half of the book shows the different bones and muscles part by part, as they exist in most animals, like Bammes's book does; the second half of the book shows the different animal species, bones and muscles and skin, like Adams & Singer's book does. I can tell which steel engravings some of these illustrations were based on, after Ellenberger & Baum. It also has a few species I haven't seen in animal anatomy books before, except maybe in the Zoo Books series, such as the giraffe shown on the cover. As usual, the most attention is given to horses, big cats, and dogs. I'm probably going to need to buy this for reference, since it's not the kind of thing you can just read cover-to-cover from the library, you have to use it just whenever you need it.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2005-09-24

This is a very detailed book and a must have for those that need to know more about animal anatomy. This book does layout the skeletal and muscular design of the used animals very well. One thing that it does not give you is a detailed description of exactly how the joints move or muscles work. But overall a must have if you are doing an animal study for sculpture or 3-d modeling.

5 out of 5 stars Features over 500 original drawings and over 70 photos.......2005-06-10

Artists who plan on focusing on animals had better pick up a copy of Animal Anatomy For Artists: The Elements Of Form: a virtual 'Bible' of animal anatomy, is features over five hundred original drawings and over seventy photos which painters, sculptors, and illustrators can use to understand the underlying anatomy of a range of common and wild animals. Forms created by muscles and bones provide artists with a three-dimensional figure of the final surface of the animal, while Goldfinger provides discussions of how each piece of animal anatomy interacts with another.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect book for beginning artists.......2007-09-06

Ed Emberley has a wonderful way of teaching not only children but artistically challenged adults (like myself) how to produce simple, but adorable drawings of animals. Personally, I can barely draw stick figures, but I was actually able to follow Emberley's easy instructions and ended up producing drawings that actually looked like the instructional examples in the book! Both of my children loved this book and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to learn the basics of drawing.

5 out of 5 stars Very cute book!.......2007-08-23

This book is great! My older daughter loves to doodle and this has been fun for her. My younger daughter (almost 4) can even draw a few of the animals!

5 out of 5 stars Teriffic buy.......2007-03-28

My almost three year old grandson likes dragons and other more common animals. This book makes it easy to sketch everything from alligators to dogs. (No kangaroos, though. We like kangaroos, which without instruction tend to turn out looking kind of like big mice.In fact anything I have tried to draw without Ed Emberly's help tends to look like a big mouse, which my grandson is quick to point out.) I highly recommend this book, which has helped improve the critiques of my artistic skill.

5 out of 5 stars Great entertainment on a rainy day!.......2007-01-16

This is a must have book if you have children or teach! My students love to watch how a picture unravels before their eyes.

2 out of 5 stars Fair teaching, poor content.......2007-01-16

I was rather dissappointed at the content offered and barely impressed at the book's attempt at teaching new skills. I bought the book for my 5, 7 and 9 year old children and the 9 year-old had already mastered all of the skills offered, the 7 year-old was bored very quickly and only the 5 year old's attention was held any length of time, but his age group lacks the concetration level to hang on for long. The content was far too simple and barely progressed through the entire book...this book should be marketed to only highly introverted 4-6 year-olds in my opinion, and then it would get only 3 stars....

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A book that delivers.......2005-07-29

I've looked at a lot of art instruction books, wondering if they'd perform
as promised. This profusely illustrated book is the best I've seen!
The first thing you notice when you leaf through Illustrating Nature ~
Right-brain Art in a Left-brain World is that Irene Brady has skillfully
constructed exercises to lead you by the hand at your own pace down her
well-marked trail to professional illustration. For instance, the book begins by
explaining that artistic skills are natural to most of us and that to open
the door all you need is the key - then she hands you the key.
Starting with right-brain exercises to help you access your creative
skills, she then shows you how to really look at things, noticing and
comparing shapes and angles. The next step is to convey that information to
your hand and the paper - and amazingly, out comes a picture you'll be
amazed you could create. While beginners can get started with this book,
all artists can jump in at their own skill level and proceed from there to
a stage of excellence they've only dreamed of. There are exercises to
advance the artist's skill in such different areas as shading; use of
pencil, pen, and computer; organizing and designing an illustration; field
sketching (and taking notes about the subject); and a multitude of procedures and tips, both large and small, that go into creating beautiful, professional
results. The heavily illustrated instructions for each exercise are clear,
concise, and lead the artist from elemental to complex in easy increments.
The appendix outlines steps to guide your art into a career in a wide array
of professional fields.
If you've ever thought you might like to jumpstart, improve, or hone your
artistic skills to a fine point, this book is an excellent choice.

5 out of 5 stars Illustrating Nature: Right-Brain Art in a Left-Brain World.......2005-07-28

Irene Brady is an expert, biologically accurate nature artist, but that doesn't stop her from creating (and teaching others to create) lively, interesting nature art. I am very impressed by her book, Illustrating Nature, Right-brain Art in a Left-brain World. From the construction of a leaf or a wing to the hairs in an ear and the fur on the body, Brady leads you to analyze the structure of plant or animal parts. Then she skillfully helps you understand techniques to illustrate these features. You learn how to pay attention to the details and illustrate the entire organism in a realistic and delightful manner. Brady wisely encourages the developing artist to use computer graphics as part of their toolkit. She also provides an appendix with many design ideas for book and magazine layout and design and promotional graphics, brochures and the like for museums and nature centers. This is a superb book for classroom use and the individual learner. I would have given my eyeteeth for this book as a child. Maybe there is hope for me yet!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice for learning to draw nature.......2004-12-28

A great deal of this art instructional book deals with trying to see things and draw using the artistic side of the brain instead of the analytical left side. Subjects covered include sketching, texture, tone, line art, drawing techniques, design and layout, drawing fur, eyes, and other parts of animals, and botanical drawing. The appendixes include multiple projects, field sketchbook and portfolio creation, and career tips if you want to pursue illustration as a career. In addition to the common techniques you typically find in an art instructional book there are dozens and dozens of field notes specific to nature illustration work in the field. These make the book a best choice for anyone who wants to engage in nature illustration. Illustrating Nature is recommended for drawing in general and highly recommended for nature drawing techniques.

"How to Draw Animals" by Jack Hamm

Jack Hamm is incomparable when it comes to drawing instruction. His book on drawing animals, like his book on cartooning, is one of the very best on the market. Children have no difficulty understanding Hamm's lessons, so the reader should not feel that his book his only for adults.

4 out of 5 stars well pleased with purchase.......2006-11-04

An extremeely useful book, in fact, just what I was looking for

5 out of 5 stars Get Jack Hamm books.......2006-09-14

If you like to draw, you can't go wrong with Jack Hamm books. They are economically priced, and each of them is a wealth of reference and how-to-draw information. I have all four of his books I know of. In addition to this one: Drawing Scenery: landscapes and seacapes; Drawing the Head & Figure; Cartooning The Head & Figure. Be advised that the style of the drawing in these books is dated, that is a bit old-fashioned, when fashion comes in to play. But the material is great.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Advice for the Beginning Animal Artist.......2006-07-12

This is a great book for learning how to draw animals, as advertised by the no-nonsense title. A junior high school art student would probably find this book challenging, and advanced art students can still glean nuggets from this richly illustrated book. For the price, this is a tremendous value compared to glossy, full-color texts that don't cover as many different kinds of animals. This book has been around for a while, but its effectiveness has not diminished, unlike some others of the author's titles.

This book is a great starting point for kids to get a handle on drawing. My 6 year old and 4 year old love it! They use this book nearly every day to help with their drawings. Art is not my thing, so it even helped me!

4 out of 5 stars Great buy!.......2007-07-02

My son's preschool has this book and when I saw what he could draw from it, I knew I had to get it. He has never been much into drawing, but with the help of this book, he really enjoys it! It's a great book!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-04-16

I bought this for my almost 5 year old daughter who loves to color and draw. At kindergarten round up the teacher was telling us how important it is to teach your child how to draw step by step. I think this book is exactly what we needed. My daughter likes how the pictures turn out and she is able to follow the directions 1,2,3,4 with some help.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for 5-9 set.......2006-11-05

My daughter loves to draw but gets frustrated when her attempts are not recongizable to others. This book breaks down each animal into simple shapes a child can copy. It is easy to follow and my daughter has been pleased with her results. I have seen an improvement in her drawing ability and confidence to try more difficult things.

5 out of 5 stars Very good instructions and entertainment.......2006-01-29

My son is 6 years old and he loves this book. The instructions are very clear, he has no difficulty in following them. He has created dozens of pictures since buying the book and is quite happy to spend hours simply making pictures. He gets a real sense of accomplishment from being able to create the pictures. I highly recomend this book.

5 out of 5 stars great in school if you are a teacher.......2007-09-18

I use this whole series in my Art Class to Elementary children. They love this extra activity. It builds their confidence that they can draw identifible things. They even take multiple instructions and create a whole picture. I ripped the book apart and laminated the pages into easy to use cards. Works great!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Drawing Tool.......2007-01-09

This book is a must-have for children who love to draw and for moms who are asked to draw a certain object but don't quite know how!!! My 4 and 6 year old love this book, they are able to draw some objects and still need help with others, which is great, I like things on an advanced level. I think they learn more that way. This book has every imaginable animal in it; I don't think the author left any out! A great find at a great value!

Book Description

Because people are captivated by the "human" traits in animals, especially those that make us laugh, animals have been an endless source of humor for cartoonists. We chuckle at the antics of Marmaduke and Garfield, recognizing in them amusing behavior in our own pets. We also find humor in more human-like characters such as the irascible Donald Duck and the gloomy Eyore because their personalities remind us of people we know. With their ability to make people laugh, animals are essential in the repertoire of every cartoonist.

In this book, Christopher Hart teaches an easy method for capturing the forms and expressions of animals. The book begins by showing how to create simple drawings with just a few strokes of the pen. Following the basic shapes, Hart goes on to depict animal personalities that are based on their physical traits. He covers many different species, from exotic African beasts to common breeds of dogs and cats. A final section shows how animals can be turned into "human" characters that stand upright and wear clothes.

5 out of 5 stars Best book i have:).......2007-02-23

This book is by far the best one in my collection:) It's stuffed with inspirational pictures and it's very easy to read:) It took me only about a half hour to create my very own cartoon character after reading a bit in this book:D

The step-by-step drawing guides in here are so easy to follow, and the book also show you different degrees of hardships in creating a character. You have the easily drawn characters, the medium hard-to-draw characters, and the really hard-to-draw characters:S

I'd say i was already in the "Medium" category when i bought this book, so the easily drawn characters were just to simple for me to even bother with. But still, they make good reference::)

If i am to say something about what audience this book is aimed for, then i'd have to say it's for beginners and people like me(A bit past beginner:p). There are VERY few hard-to-draw pictures in here, so i'm gonna have to buy another book soon if i keep progressing like i do:p

Different animals you can learn to draw from this book: Cats, dogs, horses, sharks, elephants, lions, tigers, bears and a few other critters...

I love this book :) I do not regret buying it at all:) I can actually REALLY reccomend this book to people who are out for learning this subject:)

5 out of 5 stars Love this book.......2006-02-19

I actually have some of my own characters now just from reading this book. Keep up the good work

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2004-07-05

As a cartoonist and author myself ( of "Let's Toon Caricatures"), I have quite a collection of how to draw books that I've amasses over the years. This book is my all time favorite for drawing great, cartoony animals.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2004-06-27

I love the idea of putting cartoon animals into humorous situations, and this book shows exactly how to do that! Shows simple ways to draw some of the most seemingly complex cartoons! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE!!!.......2001-10-31

Christopher Hart's how to draw books are all wonderful. I own this one and a couple others and I often go back to them when I just can't get my sketches perfect. When I first received them I couldn't tear myself away. I was drawing up a storm 24-7. I've drawn realistic pictures all my life, but until buying these books, I'd never been able to whip out anything cartoony. Unexpectedly, his instructions and tips on cartoon drawing also helped me out in my realistic drawing and creativity.

I can't say enough about this book! You won't be disappointed! It's well worth the price and more. One great thing about it is that not only does the author really know his stuff, he's managed to present it wonderfully. It's a fun & easy read!!!
