Customer Reviews:
Pissaro makes impressionism happen!.......2006-01-03
This is another good book by Irving Stone, who also gave us Michelangelo in The Agony and the Ecstasy and Van Gogh in Lust for Life, both of which were made into major movies a half-century ago. The movies were good and had great actors, but the books were even better. This book would make a pretty good movie too, probably a psychological drama.
Stone's books are a chance to see great artists up close and behind the scenes. Since he is doing historical fiction, Stone takes you right into Pissaro's home and right up to his canvas as he is working, and right into his conversations with Monet, Renoir, and the rest at the local pubs. You are even in his head as he creates his art, which is a bit risky, but seems to work. You are there at the birth of Impressionism. It was exciting, at least for me, to get close to these legends.
Surprisingly, it was Pissaro who was the prime mover for the Impressionists exhibitions as a means to expose and educate the hostile audience of that day. The word Impressionism was like a dirty word in those days when the public only wanted clearly executed, classical or romantic paintings of such artists as Delacroix or Courbet. It's really hard to imagine today what made the critics and the public so angry in those days. Was it a bad idea to be innovative? Was it worth almost rioting over? What was the deal with being creative or a little different with your expression?
Organizing anything among this wild group of Impressionist bohemians was almost miraculous, but Pissaro possessed exceptional people skills (always a rare quality, then as now) that made it happen. It is very unlikely that anyone else at the time could have done it. At the same time he and his family were living hand-to-mouth, and you have to wonder how his wife put up with him (just barely, I think).
Almost a century after his time, Pissaro finally gets his due, at least in this book.
my review.......2000-02-29
This book made me understand the real struggles all impressionist artists had to live with to have their work accepted by the people, and how much they helped each other in their time of need. The author has brought real-life meaning to a story told many times! Brilliantly written. I enjoyed once again his hard facts and real characters. Irving Stone definitely is a master.
Historical and Entertaining!.......1998-10-15
A fascinating portrayal of Camille Pissarro. I knew little about this genius before reading this book and afterwords I felt as though I were an expert in impressionism. One of the best books Ive ever read!
My favorite Stone "artist" bio.......1998-06-21
Of the three books about artists by Irving Stone, this was my favorite (and Pissaro is my favorite artist as well). Stone kept me interested through-out.

Book Description
From the mid-1860s to the mid-1880s two artistic legends, Paul Cazanne and Camille Pissarro, executed numerous paintings side by side as they worked in Pontoise and Auvers. This book accompanies an exhibition of 74 paintings and 8 drawings that embody the core of the two artists' collaboration and explores their artistic relationship in detail. Their dynamic interaction began with their first meeting at the Academie Suisse, Paris, circa 1861, and continued through much of their careers. To examine the techniques that Cazanne and Pissarro adopted in response to each other's work, the exhibition and book juxtapose related works by both artists, reuniting many of them for the first time since they were created. The friendship between Cazanne and Pissarro was of considerable importance within the development of early modernism. An essay by Joachim Pissarro discusses this fascinating interchange and offers new insights into both the shared and the distinctive elements of the two artists' aesthetic sensibility.

Pizzaro & Cezanne together again!.......2006-03-17
Wow! This is a book not to be missed for those who love Impressionism and the contrast between two of the greats in a way scarecely ever shown. They were friends - mentor and student - and drew inspiration from each other over the years until the student (Cezanne) finally departed South and became his own (and more famous) man. But oh the beauty of Pizarro's work!

A Fine Catalogue of an Important Exhibition: Dialogues of Cezanne and Pissarro.......2005-10-02
Though this book is a catalogue for an important exhibition traveling to the West Coast after its origin in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, it is so finely produced and contains such important information along with generous examples of the works of two significant artists that it is sure to become a major contribution to the history of art libraries around the world. It is beautiful to peruse, intelligently written and opens a window into one of the more interesting and productive friendships in art history.
Meeting in art school in the 1860's Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) and Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) continued a mutually beneficial camaraderie for twenty years, during which time they produced not only beautiful paintings but also defined an important transitional period in art. While many view Pissarro as the echt-Impressionist, and Cézanne as the pioneering Post-Impressionist, essayist Joachim Pissarro's text questions the significance of these preconceived art history monikers in codifying each artist's stance in the overall view of art history. The true significance in the development of their friendship and dialogues about art, as captured in their painting together in Pontoise and Auvers, France, lead to the development of Modernism in painting.
Wisely and elegantly designed, this book places works by each artist side by side, illuminating the interplay of the two master painters and allowing the viewer to absorb the similarities as well as the disparities that created such a powerful dialogue and relationship and explores how each artist sought new ways to express the visualized scene before him. This is a very fine monograph, vividly encouraging all art lovers to seek attendance at the exhibition wherever possible. Grady Harp, October 05
Book Description
Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was the only member of the Impressionist group to exhibit in all eight of their exhibitions held in Paris between 1874 and 1886. He drafted the Impressionist convention and was the principal organizer of the first exhibition held in 1874. He was a bold and restless experimenter throughout his career, working in a variety of mediums and techniques, including painting, drawing, and printmaking. Pissarro was also regarded as an astute judge of young talent. Cézanne and Gauguin both acknowledged their profound debt to him, and Seurat, Signac and Matisse also benefited from Pissarro's generous encouragement and advice at the start of their careers.
This beautiful book is the first to examine closely Pissarro’s innovative role in the Impressionist movement and his novel approach to pictorial composition. With 150 stunning color illustrations of many of Pissarro’s greatest works, this comprehensive and accessible book includes five essays written by distinguished scholars that analyze the artist’s exploration of composition and subject matter, his experiments with color and space, and his turn to Neo-Impressionism toward the end of his career. Camille Pissarro also describes his relationships to other contemporary artists, his reception by critics at the time, and his significant influence upon Impressionism and modern art.

Carmen Thyssen-Bornemixza Collection Vol 1 & 2.......2006-03-09
After seeing the collection in Madrid a study of Vol 1& 2 were rewarding in so far as each work of art (95% plus ) paintings had an essay regarding the work and aspects of the artists life and style. The paintings in the books and collection were perhaps not typical of the artist they are in deed lovely and worth an art lovers time. These are not coffee table books but give one an opportunity to get a good idea of what Western art is. A. Cinelli, M.D.

Book Description
This large, lavish journey through the art of the 19th-century French landscape offers a host of masterful works, among them Corot's Forest of Fontainbleau, Millet's End of the Hamlet of Gruchy, Renoir's Rocky Crags at L'Estaque, and Monet's Rue de la Bavolle, Honfleur. As is often the case, however, some of the most wonderful things to see are also the least expected: rare and unusual monotypes by Degas, three states of a softground etching by Pissarro, and numerous works by some of their lesser-known but equally important contemporaries. Unlike previous books on the topic, Impressions of Light presents a unique and stunningly complete group of work that introduces a new level of complexity into the discussion of French landscapes. Rather than considering the landscape as a steady, linear development and the product of a single medium, it takes into account the many crosscurrents and intersecting developments in French art, from the Barbizon school through the post-Impressionist period. In addition, it studies the landscape in a variety of media--painting, prints, and photography--exploring both the individual artists' perceptions and the ways in which they influenced each other. With over 80 paintings and 70 works on paper from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's collections, and published to accompany a major exhibition, Impressions of Light encompasses more than 100 years and 56 artists working in a dozen different media. It holds the broadest possible view, yet never loses sight of the extraordinary intricacy that makes the landscape so enduringly appealing.

Come Visit Beautiful French Landscapes.......2003-06-21
The book Impressions of Light by George Shackleford et al is a companion book to an art exhibit of works from Boston's Museum of Fine Art. The paintings are landscapes created by France's greatest nineteenth century painters and photographers. Most of the painters are Impressionists but others schools are represented as well. The book also contains sketches which were part of the exhibit. The sketches, as well as the written commentary which accompanies many of them, allows the reader to better understand the creative process of the painters. The factual information in the book is very extensive and helps the readers see more in the works than normally meets the eye. Perhaps what is most interesting about this book and the collection of paintings and photographs included it is the plethora of lesser known works by these great artists. Readers, especially those who have been fortunate to view the exhibit, will be transported to the settings of these great works and gain a deeper appreciation of these great artists and photographers.

Book Description
Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was at the very center of the Impressionist movement. Although his paintings seem to typify the impressionist style, the variety of media in which he worked and his working practices, which involved careful studio preparation as well as plein air painting, lead us to redefine our concept of Impressionism.

A Literary artistic treasure.......2003-11-23
Highyly reccomend it. It is an amazing portrayal of the arist life and provides a complete account of Camille's various artisit treasures. Preceding this book, there was not much info on Camille that could be commonly found in bookstores. Upon reading the book, i found it unlocked a completely new door to camilles work. Litereary gold, it has so much more than pictures in it. Filed under complete keys you oughtto understand about camille. An unforgettalievable treasure.
Balanced and Substantial.......2000-07-09
The number, size, and quality of color reproductions justifies the physical weight of this book. Joachim Pissarro's commentary interests and informs the reader without making the volume unduly heavy intellectually. I found that the basic chronological organzation with some thematic digressions provided a good vantage point for understanding Pissarro's work.
