A Great Book.......2006-05-27

I've checked this book out from the library at least five times. It always helps to inspire me and either remind me of old ideas or give me fresh ones. This book doesn't actually teach you how to draw. For that, I'd suggest "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way." This book teaches you how to develop plot ideas, create your own studio, do drawing exercises, create characters, etc... It has interviews with famous comic artists and kid artists. It has drawing book suggestions and ways to promote your work. It's a really helpful book that I would definately recommend.

This is a fun book to read. In addition to being well written and informative, this book opened up to me the wonderful world of comics/graphic novels (MAGIC KNIGHTS RAYEARTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)I think it is a really good book for if you want to start on drawing comics but you just don't know if you have the patience to fit all those little drawings into little boxes. That's kinda how I felt at first but now I love drawing comics.

Good book, but not the one of the best.......2004-05-07

"Body Marks" is an interesting look into the world of body modification. Though its primary focus is tattooing, piercing and scarification, it also has sections neck elongation and body painting (henna is specifically discussed). The book briefly discusses other cultures, but is mostly on modern, Western modification.

The book is well organised and each section is complimented with good photos (albeit sparingly). Some of the content is a bit outdated or inaccurate, but for the most part is well done.

I gave the book 3 out of 5 stars because, while it is well done, both the content and the photography was significantly less valuable than that found in other books ("Return to the Tribal" and "Modern Primitives" are much better). The photos were good, but there were relatively few within the book. As aforementioned, the content was interesting and well structured, but a tad outdated and in some places inaccurate.

I loved this book and have used it to assist with stimulating teens who are stymied in self-expression. The material presented in this book is comprehensive and includes more themes and open-ended questions for journaling than I can chronicle. In addition, quotes of famous people are inserted to support the themes of each chapter. The book is an excellent tool to be used for assisting teen to till the soil of their lives and unearth blocked feelings that they have been unable to express or were unaware even existed. In addition, the material is presented with a multi-cultural format that honors our global connectedness. Gift someone with this book or use it as a teaching tool with groups. Adults looking for a way to embark upon a desire to journal their feelings would also benefit from its use.

Not Just for Teens/Young Adults.......2006-06-25

Though Ms. Johnson's most recent books have been aimed at teens (an those adults who are in relationship in some way with teens), this book (though it has a teen on the cover and several writing entries by teens and young adults) is for spiritual seekers of all ages. Neither is it necessary to be extremely comfortable with the process of writing in general, nor journaling in particular, in order to make use of this book's wisdom. It is so accessible, so rich with visual stimulants, quotes, suggestions, and examples that I would defy anyone to open it to any page and not be inspired to move deeper into themselves, be that through writing, "dreaming," ritual, movement, or seeking connection with others, nature, or All That Is. I have personally used and professionally recommended many spiritual journaling books over the years, and this one brings fresh energy and new life to a rather staid genre. Bravo! Kudos to Ms. Johnson and all of her contributors.

I bought this book after reading the negative reviews. I expected to read some gory stories about body piercing, but found this book tame, to say the least. Actually, it was somewhat biased in favor of tattooing and should have been titled "a complete guide to body piercing and tattooing". It covers both sides and is especially helpful in giving good advise on the care of piercing and tattooing. The cases given were, in my experience, fairly common and typical. At the hospital where I am at, I have seen much much worse, such as a male who tore his genital piercing and, by the time he got to the hospital, was covered with blood. After reconstruction surgery he had to battle infections. Some infections, especially those due to tongue piercing, can be a real problem. I have seen many very nasty infections that linger on for months or longer (infections still are one of the most common causes of death, even in the Western world). Antibodies are not always effective and over use can result in the development of resistant strains. Also, antibiotic use can result in the development of new allergies that can be lethal. A major problem is hepatitis C, which can cause liver cancer, usually a fatal form of cancer. The problem is, it may take 10 to 20 years to develop, long after one has forgotten about the piercing. The literature indicates that this viral infection may be a major problem in the future, but we will not know until several years down the road how serious it will turn out to be. Also, HIV infection is a real problem, as is cyst formation, lipomas, keloid formation, edema, hematoma, and other health problems. After reading the negative reviews of this book, it is quite clear to me that the critics never read the book. Someone needs to write a book on the real dangers of body piercing and tattooing.

Pretty Good.......2003-01-24

The author who wrote this did a good job and had some very useful information. I did a senior project for school and after reading this book, was able to get good info on tattoos and piercings. I would recommend it to anyone who wants some good history info and also for anyone looking for safety info on tattooing and piercing.

i had to do a research report on eyebrow piercing and this was the only bo0k the library had! all i have to say was that this bo0k was extremely bias saying all the untruths about piercings...Like the only people that get piercings are bikers and it is not excepted!! This bo0k really didnt even help Me!!

This book in one word is HORRIBLE. The author shares his/her points of views the whole time. Their is a nape piercing on the cover that isn't even done properly. I reccomend not even to take a look at this book. It is the worst I have read by far!

Ignorance is bliss..........1999-05-04

This book is, in a nutshell, a piece of garbage. The author takes personal bias to a whole new level (of course I guess I'm just biased the other way). No doubt her examples have some basis in fact, but they represent exaggerated worst case scenarios. If you want more level-headed (and accurate) advice on piercing and tattoos, go to a REPUTABLE piercer or tattoo artist. If you enjoy fear-mongering and misinformation, by all means, buy this book. For every horror story this woman dredges up, there are countless good experiences that do not result in scars and various social traumas. On a more positive note, this book fully deserves the full 1 star because it made me laugh so darn hard. The author's next offering may be "Everything You Need to Know about the Dangers of Fruit and Vegetables", telling stories of how some kid poked out his eye with a carrot.

I am a teacher in two high schools and I like to read the stories of the book to my students from time to time to inspirate them and reinforce their teenage self esteem! I suggest it to all teacher to make the same with a nice calm background music.

The purpose of this book is very helpful for teenagers. They tell stories that are very common in the teenager life and could help to solve a problem. They also tell stories that happened when they were children and affect them when they grew up. I enjoyed reading this book because it is very funy, lovely, sad, mysterious and very informative. I rate this book with five stars because it helped me and it can also help other teenagers.

This wonderful heart felt book is an inspiration to those who are about to, those who are in, or those who have been through the rough "teen years". This book is full of amazing stories from teens, or adults (writing about their past) about the great times, and not so good times of their life. By reading this, you may relate to things people write, and be able to possibly learn from others' mistakes, before you make them. "Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul" has various stories on many different subjects, and will be hard to put down. It offers friendship, sorrow, comfort, humor, and help (etc.). This has truly been one of my favorite things to read, as well as the other "Chicken Soup" books.

I read it as a teenager- and it moved me.
I felt like there were so many others with similar experiences.
I felt more compassionate toward others.
And learned how many experiences that are not so good- can be looked at as a good learning experience.
I loved it so much I thought every teenager should own a copy.

Dissapointed.......2003-02-23

I bought this book thinking that these designs would be easy to do,but you have to purchase other items to complete the designs, so add this into the price if you are going to buy this book, i wouldn't recommend it, unless you have the money for the items that are in the second page of this book, to complete some of the designs in the book you need waterproof body liners, A commercial stampand three inking pads, white mendi stick, liquid water colours made for the skin, a paintbrush or eyeliner brush, makeup sponges, and a lot of other tools of the trade to many to mention, so I was dissapointed with this book as I thought they would be easy to do, they look easy in the photo on amazon.co.uk but they are not as you need all sorts of stuff too much stuff to mention as you need a foam back board and other stuff also, I have learned one valuable lesson from buying this book I will never buy a book whhich hasn't been reviewed.
