A Good Guide.......2007-07-19
Very well done and easy to understand. Samples are good and support the ideas throughout.
Practical Traits.......2006-03-19
This book offers tons of practical approaches and practice scoring for the 6 Traits of Writing. It is written by a recognized master in the field and has been so helpful.
A Friendly Read.......2006-02-26
Spandel's book is an authentic, engaging, and encouraging read for those that teach writing, want help infusing writing, or want to enhance their own writing. It is written conversationally and is well supported with numerous examples. I found it visually appealing as a reader and insightful. (Another review didn't like the visuals because it isn't easy to lift examples "as is" for sharing in class. To that angle I agree, but as a reader the layout is very pleasing.) Highly recommended.
Creating Writers Through 6-Trait Writing Assessment and Instruction (4th Ed).......2005-07-28
This book gives so many examples of the qualities to look for and teach in writing instruction. I especially like the fact that this edition is more inclusive of secondary ideas and samples.
With this book as a guide, it is hard to miss what is important to the writing instructional process. The information is comprehensive and user friendly.
Great info, inconvenient format.......2003-08-17
Creating Writers got me charged up and well-prepared for teaching sriting/revision using the 6 Trait model. Spandel writes well, using a combination of research-based information and personal anecdotes to keep the reader's attention. I appreciate the number and variety of samples she included for practice revision/assessment. The samples were, however, not very easy to duplicate for classroom use. The print is too small and there are often two samples on one page, or one sample on several pages. The layout is difficult to work with. Overall, though, the book is excellent. I have been to two training sessions about 6 Traits, but it took Spandel's book to get me hooked and enthusiastic, and made me confident about using the 6 Traits in the classroom. The information deserves a 5 star rating. The format deserves a 2.

Great Book.......2007-09-14
I find that the information it contains supports most of what I believe in assessing students in the classroom.
The Best Assessment Book I've Seen.......2006-03-11
I bought this for an ESL Assessment class at the graduate level. I also teach ESL at a university, and this book comes in very handy, both in theory and in practice. I especially like the rubrics you give to students so they can assess their own strengths and weaknesses. For example, when working together in groups, students fill out a form after their work is done, stating how well they listened, asked for clarification, or offered/asked for opinions. I continue to use this book long after I've taken the class, and I believe this is the best assessment book out there. Don't waste your time (or money) on books like "ESL Assessment: On the Yellow Big Road to the Withered of Oz" (or whatever the title of that book is!)
Buy this book and you won't regret it. A winner!
Excellent Resource.......2005-08-08
I have just completed a graduate course in Assessment for teachers of ELLs. Almost all of the students in this class, including me, found this book to be a very valuable resource. Some of the information is redundant, but for a teacher looking for ideas on how to construct an authentic assessment of student work (reading, writing, speaking or listening) it is full of great insights and models that can be copied from the book or revised for individual use.
Fantastic text for ESL/TESOL course on Assessment.......2003-10-11
This book is incredibly helpful for ESL / TESL / ESOL / TESOL teachers and home schoolers as well. It was a textbook in a required Assessment course, but it is so helpful and practical that it will be very useful even if you're not taking a formal course. It presents detailed advice and examples for portfolio assessment, as well as the largest assortment of rubrics that I have seen anywhere. When you use Authentic Assessment to balance your Standardized Tests, you get a more balanced picture of the student's strengths and weaknesses, so you can tailor your instruction to the need.
A Teachers Dream.......2000-03-29
This book is awesome for any teacher. Not only does it discuss many aspects dealing with authentic assessment and the importance of it, but it also gives many examples of how it can be used in an actual classroom (more applicable to LA learning, however it can be used with any subject). I loved this book because it will be a great resource for my classroom. I reccommend it to any teacher.

Use at your own risk.......2007-07-16
Did Henry Ford actually invent the automobile? Were there actually only 4,000 slaves in the South? Like other reviewers, I've gleaned a lot of very useful information from this test guide, but there are so many errors -- dozens and dozens of them -- that I find myself repeatedly having to seek out other reference sources to verify the facts I am suspicious of. Use this test guide at your own risk.
Not worth the risk!.......2007-07-14
The innumerable grammar and spelling errors are irritating, but it is the content errors that prompted my first review of a book. This book claims that Isaac, son of Abraham, experienced two name changes: the first from Isaac to Jacob, the second from Jacob to Israel. It goes on to state that Isaac's 12 sons became the 12 tribes of Israel. Any 1st grade Sunday Schooler could tell you how wrong this is. Such a major error makes me suspect the rest of the content. My biggest regret is that I've spent so much time using it as a review guide only to now have to wonder if what I've learned is true.
Most Excellent Resource!.......2007-04-27
Overall, I feel this book is the best way to prepare for the CSET. I purchased the online study program and the Cliffs Test Prep and they were okay. Beating the CSET has an entire chapter devoted to stategies on taking the tests, as well as comprehensive outlines for the essay sections. There aren't any practice tests in this book, but memorizing practice tests is NOT a good method to study anyway. Besides, there are practice tests available online for free, if that's your thing. The only other advice I can give for passing the CSET is to take each subtest separately, unless you are exceptionally bright and/or live for stress. Best of luck to you!
Very Informative Text.......2007-04-22
This book is definitley informative with lots of information to know. I haven't taken the CSET yet, but hope to pass by studying from this book and other supplements.
I found the book to contain errors that are minor, but then became irritating. The errors sometimes confused me and it got to be very frustrating b/c you weren't sure what was right. Overall, a great book to study from, but have other supplemental books handy as well.
Best Prep Out There!.......2007-02-21
I purchased 4 books to prepare for the CSET and this one was by far the most comprehensive. If you know the info in this book, you will ACE the test. That is one of the problems, however. This book is SOOOOOO detailed that sometimes it's frustrating. However this book, in my opinion was KEY to me passing the test. The other books helped with practice tests, but I mainly studied from this one. Took all 3 tests the same day and passed them all on the first try. Good luck!!

Helpful Resource.......2006-07-19
The book is a helpful resource, especially if you've used the QRI4, which was written by the authors of this text. Includes some useful charts, diagrams, and a booklist.
A must have for reading specialists!.......2005-09-11
This book is a great resource for specific strategies matched to your IRI results. It suggests practical strategies and intervention models to meet the needs of your struggling readers. Each chapter contains specific strategies for each component of an IRI. This is a great asset to include in your professional library for reading specialists and other professionals who administer IRIs and plan instruction based on those results.

GREAT BOOK.......2007-03-13
Great material, helpful information. It is a somewhat heavy read, but that is to be expected with the material it is covering. My only complaint would be that the paper the pages are printed on is thin and prone to getting bent etc.
Book Description
Focusing on ability/disability and reading/writing from an interactive perspective, this book emphasizes the importance of determining and establishing the appropriate learning environment for the individual learner. Extensive, in-depth treatment of current research and best practices make this book a 'must-have' addition to any current or future teacher's library. Section I provides the readers with a strong, comprehensive knowledge of reading/writing research and assessment practices from which readers can move forward to the second and third sections of the book, which contain detailed discussions and examples of assessment practices.

Reading and Writing Assesment Review.......2007-02-13
I think the text is well written without being redundant. I'm using it for grad class...its a good textbook. :)
Book Description
This book presents a highly practical approach to assessing children's spelling and word knowledge abilities and offering effective, appropriate instruction. Included is the Developmental Spelling Analysis (DSA), a dictated word inventory that enables teachers to quickly and easily evaluate students' stages of spelling development and their knowledge of important orthographic features. Detailed guidelines are set forth for engaging students in hands-on word study that is tailored to their specific strengths and weaknesses. Validated and field-tested, the instructional techniques described here reflect the author's many years of classroom experience. Particularly useful features of the book include narrative "snapshots" of children at different stages of spelling development; numerous examples of student work; suggested word sort activities for each orthographic feature; lists of recommended books and poems; and a focus on fostering a love of words through word play and language appreciation. Provided in the appendices are reproducible forms for administering the DSA, plus a list of over 12,000 words arranged by sound, pattern, and meaning-related features.

Word Journeys by Kathy Ganske.......2000-07-02
Word Journeys is a great supplementary resource to educators who are familiar with word study. Ganske includes a straightforward introduction to developmental word knowledge and assessment of same. Her years of classroom experience make this an authentic and highly usable text. Teachers will find the supplemental word lists in Appendix 1 to be a great source of words for sorting activities and the reproducible forms in Appendix 2 easy to use and very practical. Those who are new to word study will find this text easier to follow than Words Their Way(Bear,Templeton,Invernizzi and Johnston). Word Journeys is a welcome addition to the field of spelling and word study.

Literacy Difficulties.......2005-10-24
This is a great text. It is well organized and I don't think they miss anything. I took a course that used it, and I am glad I bought the book. I will refer to it often when I am trying to figure out a plan with a student who has reading difficulties.
The only critique is that the print is too small for my eyes.
For both the educator and the parent.......2004-12-06
If one is preparing to enter the teaching profession and plans to teach reading, this is the book for you. If one is a parent of a struggling reader, this, too, is the book for you. The authors have put together a rather concise and rather uncomplicated read that is beneficial to the reading specialist, the classroom teacher, and the parent that wants to know about techniques, strategies, and programs available to assist in the teaching of reading.
Filled with a wealth of case studies, entertaining activities, and other aids, the book is equally a reference book as well as a textbook. There is historical documentation that shows how the teaching of reading has evolved over the years.
Although it is rather pricey, as is the case of most textbooks, it is a price of which most educators/parents should be willing to pay.
The "loss" of one star is due to some of the author's assessments of the differences between ethnic groups in regards to reading/learning styles. It is unfair to lump all of a certain minority/racial/culture group in the same based on surveys or studies of a select few.

Find Instructional Reading Levels Efficiently and Effectively.......2007-01-04
This inventory has many improvements from prior Johns editions. As always, the Johns is easy to administer. This version provides accurate instructional reading levels in a timely fashion with improved student texts and comprehension questions. The CD is easy to use and simplifies copying. As a teacher, this purchase is worthy of my time and money.
Fantastic book!!!.......2006-07-22
This book really helped mer to understand doiing a reading assessment and i felt extremely comfortable doing the assessment.
Basic Reading Inventory.......2006-02-25
Immediate results from the assessments. Not as easy to use as Marie Clay's running Records, but all inclusive. The CD-ROM is great for reproducables, but many pages have to be pulled out of the book and put in page protectectors. Still a great method to diagnose and assess children's reading. One of those college books you will keep.
Excellent Reading Assement.......2005-09-30
This is an excellent book for professionals who can take the time to learn to give this kind of informal reading assessment. The format is very organized, clear, and easy to read. The author has numerous years of experience as a teacher/educator and it is apparent in the assesment he has designed. The information the assessment generates is very useful.
