I am new to elements and I needed a guide to learn all the ins and outs of the software. This book is not it. I cant tell you who the target audience is but it is not the novice user. There are NO clear instructions in this book, just a lot of verbage from a guy who wanted to fill pages.

5 out of 5 stars Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0: A visual introduction to digital photography.......2007-07-07

This is the latest of Philip Andrew's series of books covering Photoshop Elements, now at Version 5, and fully updated, is aimed at those who are new to digital imaging and the software. One of the many strengths of the book is its "backward compatibility"; that is to say, you can use this book, even if you have a previous version of the software. This is achieved by stating clearly at the start of each section what the commands are for versions 1 through to 5. The book is divided into15 Chapters, covering everything from an overview of digital imaging and the software to creating a web photo gallery. In between each of the following topics and more is covered: Getting your pictures into Elements, tonal control, retouching techniques, making and using selections, organising your photos with tags, understanding and using layers, working with text, using painting tools, creating panoramas, preparing images for the web and printing, making creations. A further Chapter contains 12 "real world" projects that can be followed step-by-step to further hone your skills. There is also a useful companion website where there are further downloadable resources and all the photos used in the book are available to download and practice on. In summary, this is an excellent book that I commend to anyone interested in getting the most from the software. Philip Andrews has a clear, concise and easy style, and manages to explain complex terms in an easy to understand way. This, combined with great full colour screen shots and clear step-by-step instructions makes this a must for any Photoshop Elements user.

4 out of 5 stars Photo-Shop Elements.......2007-04-12

I started wioth Photoshop Element version onme and have updated ever since tom the newest version.

I have found Photoshop CS too expensive and too much info for what I need as a photograopher.

Therefore Photoshop Elements is just the right product for me.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely NOT a tutorial.......2007-01-27

If you learn by doing, this book is not for you. I have recently gone from PSE 2.0 to PSE 5.0 and really needed to learn the new features. When I bought PSE 2.0, I also bought "50 Fast Digital Photo Techniques". It was a wonderful book. It included a CD of photos used by the book, so the reader could start with the original photo and follow the book step-by-step to end up with the final image. The book showed the "before" and "after" and all of the steps in between. That is what I had in mind when I purchased this book. What a letdown. Some of the sample pictures that this book uses are available at their website, but the book does not indicate when to use their picture and specifically which sliders to manipulate and to what value to obtain the final result. So it does little more than explain what each of the features do. You can sit on your couch and read it. No `real-world' applications. Don't waste your money on this one.

5 out of 5 stars My first Elements Book.......2007-01-20

Having jumped directly from Elememts 2.0 to Elements 5, I decided to seek professional help on getting maximum usage from the program. My purpose is scanning 35mm slides and enhancing them along with digital images. I shopped and read many portions of various Elements 5 books and decided that Philip Andrews was talking to me so I bought this edition from Amazon.com. I now have better results and a better workflow for digital capture and editing. Mr. Andrew's explanations and particularly the advise on 16 bit vs 8 bit images has helped the quality of my images and my hobby enjoyment as well.

I found this in the Library at the college. After taking a photoshop 1 & 2, this book helped solidify the things I learned and then some. I liked his writing style, he communicates very well. I think he did a better job of explaining things than my professor. Good book.

5 out of 5 stars Gurus and other Species.......2005-11-30

Since there are a myriad of how to books on Adobe's Photoshop and its less intimitating sibling Elements 3.0, its no easy feat to pick the book that does the job for you, without ending up buying a whole library on just the one subject.
This book by Philip Andrews is a very thorough introduction to the workings and mastery of Photoshop Elements. I, for one wanted a book on the subject written by a photographer, not some techie or selfproclaimed Photoshop guru. That said, this book is aimed at photographers at all levels, but doesn't deal with the fundamentals of photography. So it is not an introduction to digital photograpy, but to editing, tweaking and enhancing your photographs once they are on your hard disk drive.
The appeal of this book is based on its attractive layout and visualizations, printed on a nice stock of paper. I am very happy with this book, but I would not have expected anything less from such a prestigious publisher in the fields of photography and cinematography. So by now, I can rightly proclaim myself a Photoshop guru, even though only in Elements (but I don't have to mention that).

2 out of 5 stars Not much about Layers.......2005-11-27

I bought this book with hope of help with creating layers.....not much help. The book is in a good format and has lots of info....just not what I was looking for.

2 out of 5 stars not for the ignorant!.......2005-08-13

This is a typical book written by experts for other experts. I'm sure many readers will be like me: amateurs who need help in some of the basic techniques for digital imaging. This book does not provide that.

I bought it basically to help with the use of layers to produce multiple images. In spite of reading and re-reading the relevant sections, I still have not managed to do just that. Perhaps it's me, but the fact that I have not succeeded suggests that the book fails in its primary object - to help the reader.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough info on photo browser and related info.......2005-07-07

The author does a good job teaching Elements 3.0 using text and graphics.

In all, this book appears to be a good read for the first time Elements user. I have used Elements 1 and 2.

As a long time photographer, I have >8,000 digicam photos that I need to preserve, catalog, and search. From my casual reading here and there, the PSE3 seemed to fit my needs well. However, the book did not spend much time elaborating how a photographer would maintain his library, including backups, etc.

In short, if you are interested in learning how to touch up photos, this book is good. If you are more interested in maintaining your larger image collection, this book was light on the topic.

5 out of 5 stars Best book out there will sound cliche but it is..........2005-05-23

First, I am surprised nobody wrote a review for this book up to now. I know there are so many books like this but anyone, who is looking for an easy to read book with a large coverage and printed not in the boring black and white but in full color, would not possibly miss this book.

I own Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 and How to Do Everything with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0. When I bought Elements 3.0, I wanted to buy a good book to tell me how to do things with this version and I wanted something colored and easy to understand. I hate long and tiring b/w books that "tell" you all those complicated instructions instead of just showing them with a couple of well designed illustrations. I own by the way two digital cameras, Sony DSC-W1 and Canon D-SLR 20, both are the best cameras I ever owned.

When I went to the local Barnes and Noble, I probably reviewed 15 books on Elements 3.0 for hours and this book beat all the others by a landslide. I bought it on the spot without thinking twice.

I like it so much that I started reading the book from cover to cover, something I never did with a book like this. The instructions are clear; there are pictures and diagrams on every single page that make it so easy to understand what is being explained.

If you are looking for a book that will give you almost anything you will need to use Elements 3.0, buy this book and look no further. I am 100 per cent sure you will be satisfied with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Astrophotography with Reeves.......2007-05-05

If you are thinking of trying astrophotography, this is an excellent place to start. Reeves covers the basics of using inexpensive webcams to produce great images with modest telescopes and the basics of using digital cameras (both DSLR and fixed lens) with or without a telescope. I have used a variety of his techniques and they work. For example, using a inexpensive Canon A60 to produce better moon photos than I could achieve in the old film days and taking constellation photos in less than 30 seconds with a DSLR on a tripod. If you follow the webcam instructions you will be amazed at the results. Reeves covers all the basics and covers them very well indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Image Editing for Photographers.......2006-04-12

The original Digital Darkroom was an image editing program back in the 1980s. This Year 2000 incarnation is an exploration of what the digital darkroom is like in the 21st Century, with lots of information on editing your images from a photographer's perspective. There are other books on using specific image editors, like Photoshop, as a "darkroom" tool, but this classic remains a good introduction.

4 out of 5 stars A fine book, with reservations.......2001-06-01

Tom Ang has written a fine book for anyone interested in the digital darkroom. Note, though, that I reference "digital darkroom." This isn't the same as digital photography. Mr. Ang is committed to 35mm photography, with the images then scanned into a digital format for manipulation with a pc. It isn't, in other words, a book for someone who wants to understand his digital camera.

With that disclaimer, though, I can recommend this book highly. Mr. Ang is a fine artist, with a good eye, and a beginning digital photographer can learn a lot from his work. Note that this isn't an exhaustive book, but one where he illustrates various techniques and methods using Adobe Photoshop on a Mac. You should be able to translate those to your own software on a non-Mac pc, and get creditable results from your shots with a digital camera.

4 out of 5 stars Great for those just getting started in digial photography.......2000-07-17

This is a great book for those just getting started in digital photography. It gives an overview of effects you can create using programs like Photoshop and Painter. The book is packed with interesting large color photo examples.

First you get an overview of the pros and cons of both digital and classical photography. Then there is information on choosing camera equipment, film, a computer, a scanner and a printer as well as software and other accessories. The author then gives an explanation of resolution and gives advice on making scanning more efficient and accurate.

Many techniques follow. Some of the basics include using contrast, curves and levels, hue and saturation, toning, channel mixing, sun printing effects, posterisation, changing colors, and hand coloring. Others focus on filters or brush techniques such as blur/sharpen, pixelation, distortion, grain, paint textures and cloning techniques. Compositing as well as using layers, modes and multiple images is also covered. The author also offers in insight on color symphony, file types, compression, resolution and printing digital photos.

This is not your typical step-by-step how-to book. You see concepts illustrated in photos, not page after page of computer screens. There is plenty of high lever technical advice here though, but the main goal to explain the logic behind the tools used. If you understand how they work and when to use them you can utilize them more effectively. This is the kind of background I have been looking for that is missing from most of the software manuals. In the back of the book there is an excellent glossary and a nice list of other helpful books and some websites.

4 out of 5 stars Not for Intermediate Photoshop Users.......2007-08-21

I have been using Photoshop Elements 2.0 for a few years now. I consider myself fairly adept with the program and have already familarized myself with all the tools. However, every time one of my graphically inclinded friends sits down with the program, they seem to be able to create their desired manipulations faster and better than I can. I was hoping with the help of this book I would get better at using the tools I had already been using - making me a more efficent and affective user.

Unfortunately, this was not the book for me. This book does a good job of explaining what each of the tools do and how to use them. As another reviewer already stated, it's like using the help section but in print form. The book is easy enough to follow (though it may be a little overwhelming if you're brand new to any kind of graphical software). If you're trying to figure out what everything in the program does, this book is definitely a viable option. However, if you're looking for a book to help you improve using the tools you've already been using, this book will be of little use to you.

This book is exactly what it says it is "A visual introduction to digital imaging". Even though the it was not useful to me, I cannot fault it for not being more than the title claims hence the 4/5 stars rating.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2006-03-16

This book has been very helpful in learning more about Photoshop Elements 2 than just basics. I would reccomend it

2 out of 5 stars adobe photoshop elements 2.0 a visual introduction to digita.......2003-07-06

This book is definitely not an introduction to digital imaging. What it is, a well organized and illustrated book listing the features of Photoshop Elements and what can be accomplished with it. This book is not something you can follow to perform various digital manipulations. In fact I believe that it is no better than using the help section of the program, which comes free with the program! After trying the book I found free material on several web sites that had good detailed steps to follow. this book should offer typical cases with step by step instructions.

5 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners.......2003-06-08

I am only in my teens but my dad got a copy of photoshop elements, a digital camera and and this book. I found it great to start of with and it has helped me gain great marks on all my assignments. I reccomend to all beginners who are starting of with photoshop elements.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-05-13

It was the second book I had bought to learn elements. It hit the mark. Perfect. Lots of illustrations, lots of color, and not too much verbosity. A picture IS worth a thousand words. A web site provided has all the pictures available to "play with."
This book has given me a tremendous grasp of Elements in an extremely short time. Philip Andrews has done an incredible job. There may be more for me to learn in Elements but this is without a doubt the best introduction I have found. Before purchasing I thumbed through many books which left me cold. Philip's book truly gets you up and going quickly.

2 out of 5 stars Sadly very out of date.......2006-07-11

I agree. I bought this book with the hope that it might reflect much of the newer technology relating to astrophotography today like the Canon 350D and several other digital SLR brands but it is sadly focused on film photography which, in itself, is still a relevant medium but increasingly declining. For those who may be interested in film based photography this book offers a lot.

2 out of 5 stars Book is outdated.......2006-05-19

The title is misleading. 95% of this book is geared toward film photography. Less than 20 pages way in the back talk about CCD imaging. Save your money and buy a book that covers more current technology. This book does cover the basic principles of astrophotography, but any good more recent book will cover the same.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Little Book, Fun to Read.......2007-08-20

AS FOR THE QUALITY, there are tons of photos and examples in glossy vivid color. I think one of the best things about the book is that it gets your creating juices flowing. It does discuss a lot of Photoshop techniques, so those without an editing program may not enjoy it. And perhaps there is too much on printers; I prefer to send mine over the internet to companies like [...].

Really advanced digital users may find it somewhat basic, but I think most users are basically intermediate, and this book fits the bill. It's chock-full of information, and there's just enough to send you in the right direction to go and explore on your own.

I think it's a great "intermediate introduction" and I look forward to purchasing other books by Tom Ang.

2 out of 5 stars Photography? Where?.......2007-03-12

This book, like all DK books, is very pretty and full of full-color graphics and pictures and so on. Unlike most DK books, the content is minimal and poorly written. Ang has great difficulty explaining things clearly. Of the books 220+ pages, about 40 deal (in a very nonspecific way) with the actual process of taking photos. The rest of the book consists more or less of a few dozen tips for using Photoshop. Some of the figures are wrong, and some of the sets of comparison photos are printed so small that it's impossible to tell the difference between them, stare though you will. Oh, and there's an annoying piece of Mac-evangelism towards the beginning. Avoid, avoid, avoid!

5 out of 5 stars Exactly What I Needed to Decide to Go Digital.......2007-02-18

I've never really liked taking pictures. I like looking at them, but not taking them. A whole bunch of people told me that by going digital I wouldn't dislike taking pictures so much. He then handed me this book, along with the admonishment that a lot of things like the number of megapixels change before the ink has time to dry on any book. ==I read the book and became convinced that the problems I had had before of not knowing if I had the picture, the endless changing of lenses, all the junk you had to carry with you has been replaced by a camera with a big memory card, and a 10X optical zoom that will also take movies.

I see some comments about this book that it is too simple, not enough material, not enough detail, etc. Could be. But it was exactly what I needed to tell me what I was getting into by going digital.

Most of my pictures are being taken to put on the web. Just the few pages he has on JPEG, GIF, etc. are again exactly what I needed. It told me what I needed to know without going into a bunch of extra detail.

1 out of 5 stars There are better books.......2004-07-20

The problem with this book is that it attempts to cover a lot of material, but with very little depth or detail. I provides a broad overview, but doesn't provide much needed detail. The are many better books out there on digital photography. Better of spending more money to get a better book than wasting $10-$15 for this one.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money..... I want my wasted time back........2004-06-14

This books drags on, explains little and for someone like myself that is just starting in Photography and wants an understanding in common Photographic terms is useless. The following terms are not explained in Mr. Ang's Glossary at all, and too much space is given to Computer for Dummies dialog.

Following terms are not at least touched upon or even explained:
Effective Resolution
Aperture
F Stop
Metering
Depth of field
Digital Optics
Exposure Control

What Mr. Ang Spends most of his time doing is reprinting what has been written a thousand times over in Photoshop Books and Computer for Dummies circa 1987.
The Cameras that he compares, six models, three of the best and three of the absolute worst, are in so horrible detail, three paragraphs, that I would expect this kind of effort from a Junior High Student. Of course one will get great looking photos operating a Nikon D100 but the why is not even explained in detail, what we get instead is: How to have your eyes set from optimal monitor viewing!
I would swear that most of this material was Plagiarized for "how to set up your Computer manual" and "Photoshop for Dummies". The only saving grace to the whole book is the "Quick Fix" sections but this material I have also seen many times over in PC Week and MacWorld.

If you know nothing about computers and Don't need certain Photographic terms explained and studied, and would also like to just get another tip book get the Photoshop Bible, that would be better than this outdated, ill informed over bloated drivel.
