Book Description

Welcome to the next evolution in humor.

In the spirit of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, The Darwin Awards II: Unnatural Selection brings together a fresh collection of magnificent misadventures, honoring those who continue to improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it in a sublimely idiotic fashion.

Salute the owner of an equipment training school who demonstrates the dangers of driving a forklift by failing to survive the filming of his own safety video. Heed the story of the honest bricklayer who loses a battle of wits with 300 pounds of tools. Witness the man who becomes a victim of his own "strange and unusual passion for jumping into rivers." And watch Darwin Award winners selflessly join the ongoing fight against the seven deadly sins as lust, vanity, gluttony, greed, sloth, envy and wrath all exact their evolutionary toll on the overindulgent.

Featuring science and safety discussions designed to aid those vigilant enough to avoid the scythe of natural selection, and including the most inspiring dozen Darwin Awards from the last century, this new compendium of serious humor and cautionary tales -- verified by the author and endorsed by website readers -- shows us anew how uncommon sense can be.

5 out of 5 stars SOOOO FUNNY.......2005-11-17

This book was funnier than the first one. It just made me laugh and laugh. I could never put it down. I took it with me everywhere I went just so that I could read another story of what someone did that was stupid. It is so funny to me of how dumb some people can be. They dont even think about what they are doing before they do it. Like one lady who was mad at her ex-lover so she pulled out a knife and stabbed him. The worst part was that he was piloting the plane they were in. She did not think that one through. That is not even the funniest of stories that they have in the book. This will be the best book that you ever buy.

5 out of 5 stars Unintelligent Designs.......2005-09-01

In a media atmosphere that values balance - that is the unfiltered broadcast of diametrically opposing views - there is a need for a voice that seprates the truth from the chaff. Wendy Northcutt and her Darwin Awards team is one of those voices.

Northcutt presents confirmed incidents, known urban legends and personal accounts (all carefully dated, labeled and annotated) to form a highly readable and very entertaining gumbo of the lunacy of human beings. The Darwin Awards, of course, are given to those who have improved the human gene pool by removing themselves from it. The stupider, more unlikely and bizarre the manner, the better.

From the guy who played Russian Roulette (with deadly results) to impress girls, to the guy who literally lost his head looked down a malfunctioning fireworks tube, to the Egyptian shepherd shot by one of his own flock, the examples of human carelessness, arrogance and stupidity just keep coming.

Northcutt is doing a real public service; not only helping the rest of us separate fact from fancy, but (hopefully) teaching her readers that being careful is not just prudent but can help them keep their heads.

1 out of 5 stars I'm so ashamed!.......2005-01-20

I bought this book in a moment of weakness. I knew about the Darwin Awards, having received samples of same over the internet. The better part of my nature informed me that the very notion of finding something funny in stories of stupid misadventures with tragic consequences was . . . (how you say?) . . . wrong. Wrong and stupid. If a dim-witted child guffaws at these stories, one makes allowances. For an adult to enjoy them is beyond the pale.
There are some who are horrified at the practice of book-burning. Well, I am not. I love books, but I had a nice little bonfire with this one, and the world was a better place for it.

4 out of 5 stars Proof of Stupidity.......2004-10-09

Volume II of the Darwin Awards is great for anyone that likes to have a good chuckle. These stories are short so you can read about multiple peoples lack of common sense in just a short time.

5 out of 5 stars The Darwin Awards 2.......2004-10-05

The Darwin Awards 2 is a great book if you like comedy. The Darwin Awards 2 is a series of stories of people doing the stupidest stuff. The stories in The Darwin Awards 2 will make laugh harder than you've ever laughed before.

Wendy Northcutt's writings are mostly comedy. Wendy Northcutt also writes The Darwin Awards and The Darwin Awards 3. Wendy Northcutt does a lot of things well in her books but one of the things she does really well is that she doesn't make each story long and boring but that she shortens them and gets down to the point. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Book Description

The Edgar® Award-winning author of Where There's a Will returns with another bonechilling mystery starring "Skeleton Detective" Gideon Oliver.

Sue Grafton called Aaron Elkins "first rate." Elizabeth Peters called him "one of the best in the business and getting better all the time." And now he's back in top form.

Forensics professor Gideon Oliver accompanies his wife to the Isles of Scilly, which dot the sea like an emerald necklace thirty miles off the Cornwall coast. Julie's been invited here by Russian expatriate Vasily Kozlov, scientist, millionaire, and eccentric. At his home, Star Castle, he regularly hosts a consortium of guests with differing opinions-which makes for some very heated arguments.

While Julie's stuck indoors, Gideon looks forward to puttering around the Neolithic sites nearby. But before day one is through, a newer bone turns up-this tibia is only a few years old-and all signs point to murder. And just as Gideon and the local law puzzle over the bone's origin, another murder happens at Star Castle. Could it just be bad luck, two murders within a couple of years? Or do Kozlov's lively debates have a way of turning deadly?

5 out of 5 stars His best in a long time.......2007-09-11

Unnatural Selection takes the Gideon Oliver books back into a much more satisfying realm of forensic mystery than the last few. Rather than spending inordinate time on Gideon's personal life or character intrigue, this book lets us see the process of discovery and science, the elements that first attracted me to Elkins' work.

5 out of 5 stars AST.......2007-07-27

Bear. Alaska. Scilly Islands. Washington. Bones. No one else tells stories like these. We even get to see the bear's point of view. Good old Gideon teaches us something new again, both in his forensic specialty and in a new area --Elkins does a great job with the search dog. The background story of the disgruntled top cop is intriguing too, an extra mystery.

5 out of 5 stars good in many dimensions.......2007-07-13

It's hard to imagine giving five stars to a whodunit, but I'll join the other astute reviewers.

The plot and characters have been covered in other reviews. I'll just add some general praise.

All of the Gideon Oliver stories feature clever plots, interesting characters and places,
lots of information about forensic anthropology and lots of information about some business
or academic issue. It's all tied together by good writing. There is also humor, but it
does not get in the way of the story. Expect a frequent smile, grin, or chuckle.

If you enjoyed any of the CSI shows, or enjoy travel books with some personal story, or wish
potboilers such as "Hotel" or "Airport" had some literary merit, or enjoyed Westlake's
Dortmunder stories or some of Brett's comic crime novels, or thought some environmentalists
have gone crazy, rush to get "Unnatural Selection."

5 out of 5 stars Good Mystery, Great Forensics.......2007-05-08

Gideon Oliver is a forensic anthropologist, a person who studies human bones to help the police determine who the deceased was and/or how he died. This is what distinguishes Oliver from other detectives in fiction. By now, Elkins has consulted with quite a number of scientists to make sure that Gideon gets his facts straight, and there are lots of facts. Unnatural Selection has more forensics in it than any of the others in the series.

Other people on this page have described most of the plot, so I'll just say a little about it. The action starts with Gideon, on vacation, examining a partial bone that had been discovered in the sand on a beach. He realizes that the marks on one end show that it had been sawed through and concludes that the person was probably murdered. He notifies the local police, they dig up more bones, and Gideon starts to piece together the story of the murder.

This all takes place in the context of a conference attended by several rather unusual people. Elkins likes to populate these novels with odd characters and he accomplishes that here by having a rich man convene a conference of people who are very interested in ecology but not very interested in scientific standards of evidence. Naturally, there are a lot of conflicts. Since we have to spend time with the suspects as Elkins establishes their personalities and their motives for murder, it's good of him to give us such interesting ones.

For me, a mystery writer should present enough evidence for the reader to guess who the murderer is, but should distract the reader so that he doesn't actually guess before the denouement. When Gideon and police sergeant Clapper confront the killer using evidence that had not been presented before, I felt that Elkins had "cheated". But I reread the book and I realized that there was enough information for us to guess. However, that would not be enough to justify an arrest in real life, so the, in order to make a satisfying ending to the story, Elkins provides additional info to the police. Interestingly, there is one clue that is so subtle that most readers will miss it. As we're reaching the end, Elkins puts in a suggestion to go back and reread that passage, but I was too eager to get to the end and I just kept reading.

As for the bones, this one is a solid winner for Gideon Oliver fans. Even before any crime is discovered, he describes to a regional museum director what the bones of a Cromwellian soldier tell about the soldier's life and death. As far as I can tell, this is a bonus, having nothing to do with the plot. Then he finds the sawn-off tibia and sets off the investigation. He uses some of the methods that appear in earlier books, but he also uses some new ones. For example, in the past he has used dentition and the ossification of long bones and the pubis to determine age; here he uses ossification of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum - similar idea, but expanding our knowledge. For those who are not already Oliver fans, I have to mention that Elkins uses technical terms and explains them. There are only a few per book, so anyone who is interested can learn them. He also shows Gideon in the act of thinking through the clues he finds. Unlike the TV crime shows I've seen, you get real forensics here.

In Unnatural Selection, the forensics sections are more extensive than in most of the others in the series, and also more integrated. In order to guess whodunit, or to appreciate the revelation when it comes, you have to read both the conversations with the suspects and the conversations with the police.

Real mystery, real scientific investigation, really interesting characters - it's a great combination.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read.......2007-01-09

Gideon Oliver's wife Julie is attending a consortium on conservation in the Scilly islands off the coast of England. Gideon accompanies his wife who is invited by Russian host, Vasily Kozlov. Every year Vasily invites guests with varying opinions on environmental issues.

Gideon doesn't have much interest in attending the conference but his experience as a forensic archaeologist is called upon when bones are discovered on a local beach. After some research and testing, Gideon determines the bones to be that of a guest who was murdered and dismembered two years previously. Gideon is asked by the local police chief to help with the investigation, but before there are answers to the many questions that arise in this case, another guest at the consortium is murdered.

I've read almost all, if not all, of the Gideon Oliver series. The last several have been lacking something. I could never really pinpoint what was off-- weaker plotlines, uninteresting stories, or just a series getting old, whatever it was, happily the newest Gideon Oliver book is reminiscent of the earlier ones. I was happily riveted to the story from the beginning. One minor flaw is that sometimes the story got bogged down in the very technical jargon of forensic anthropology. Learning is well and good, but when something is dry and tends to go on a bit too long, it stops the story in its tracks. Also the secondary cast of the guest at the hotel was not very well-developed. I had to flip backwards in the book to figure out who everyone was. They are introduced and then not really part of the story until the end. Regardless of a few flaws, I found the story very enjoyable.

I love Gary Larson because there are no Sacred Cows that he won't barbecue. Which is a perfect sequeway into one cartoon in this book. A rebellious teenage cow comes home wearing leather, thankfully his wise mother tells others that to ignore him it's just a phase!
I have had friends desert me in card shops when I read Gary Larson's cards. If you are a fan, this is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars quirky, bizarre, funny........2004-07-19

Yet more of Gary Larson's off the wall humour for fans to enjoy. Larson's cartoons are certainly not mainstream but for anyone who loves humour that is a little bit different this book is a delight. Quirky artwork abounds, as do the bizarre scenarios of Larson's world. One of the few cartoonists that can make me laugh out loud.... brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars unnatural.......2003-12-16

Why should you pick up Unnatural Selections when you have all the Galleries. Because in the center of this book you'll find, full-page in full color on glossy pages. It's the evolution of life as only Gary Larson can tell it.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh your thorax off!.......2003-02-19

How does one write a review for a Gary Larson book? With an example: if you've ever laughed so hard at a cartoon that you burst your second stomach, be prepared to do it again. Gary Larson's cartoons are strange humor, brilliant, and sometimes gives people dangerous belly-laughs. This book is themed around animals, (including people, (including cave people)) and space aliens. There is a short series of great color paintings in the center, depicting the various ages of life on Earth, including the hilarious "Age of Invertebrates", to the future world where Gary predicts cows will be the dominant species. If you're not familiar with Gary, you should check out the preview and see for yourself. He is the Master, but we're not sure of what. This book is hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most remarkable comic books you'll ever read.......2003-10-01

I don't read as many comics as I used to, and when I do I like them to be something different. Something a bit special. Something grown up. Something that need not be about humans with special powers. Something with artwork that is out of the ordinary, and with a story that, while accessible and
entertaining, is relevant and thought provoking.
Something like Unnatural Selection, in other words.
Unnatural Selection is a remarkable piece of work.
Its setting is a dark, dystopian future, with horrendous genetic experiments taking place on innocent human beings.
This Orwellian society is brainwashing its twisted creations to follow only the party line.
Yet out of this appalling situation appears a new kind of comic book hero - a talking hippopotamus.
Well, 'Hip' doesn't actually say anything in this first issue, but he is destined to become a futuristic Sam Spade, who just happens to be a hippo.
I first read this book in standard-sized comic book form, but the higher grade paper and larger format really does the artwork proud.
It reminds me of the feeling I got when I saw H.R. Giger's work for the first time. In some frames you're not instantly sure what's going on, and it's only after studying the image for a minute or so that what it shows becomes clear.
Horrifyingly clear, in the case of several images in Unnatural Selection. This is the sort of stuff that sticks in the mind long after you put the book down.
A criticism? The story, since it's an origin, doesn't really satisfy - butleaving the reader wanting more is no bad thing.
I'm keen to see where it all goes - but eager though I am I don't want the writers rushing out the next part of the story if it means compromising the quality...
(Footnote - Elephantmen, the second part of the Hip Flask series, is now available in standard comic format - and they didn't rush: it's cover-dated a year to the month since the first one!)

    Book Description

Hellboy, a bloodred, cloven-hoofed demon raised by the United States government,

is a top field agent for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

He questions the unknown -- then beats it into submission.

A dragon is seen perching on the statue of Christ the Redeemer

    overlooking Rio de Janeiro . . .

A werewolf stalks the streets of Baltimore . . .

    A griffin slaughters a herd of horses in Madrid . . .

Weird sightings of cryptozoological and mythological creatures abound around the globe. Sometimes the creatures simply appear and then vanish again, content merely to put in an appearance. Other times they make themselves known to entire cities, and leave their mark. Damaged buildings. Scars on the landscape. The occasional death.

Then suddenly, the death toll escalates. One by one Hellboy and his friends at the BPRD are dispatched to avert disaster. Hellboy encounters a dragon in Brazil. Abe Sapien tackles a giant alligator in Venice. Liz Sherman faces off against a phoenix in the Mediterranean.

But in dawning horror they realize it's all a distraction -- heralding nothing so much as an event of apocalyptic proportions . . .

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-04

Not as dark as the last book, this is more of an action story. In a big way! Liz has to fight a Phoenix, Hellboy gets dumped by a dragon, and Abe turns crocodile hunter, where crocodiles have heads like four wheel drives.

It gets worse, too, as the beasties start appearing in groups.

An old scientist magician the BPRD was keeping track of has been using an ancient mystical tome to bring back the 'Memory' of ancient beasts.

Partly this is for revenge, as a government agency had his wife assassinated, and partly for environmentalist reasons, as Dragons don't pollute like planes.

A kraken takes out a cruise ship, mermaids a beach, a flight of dragons an airport. The BPRD have to find his base, and stop him - with the help of a werewolf that is one of his escaped creations.

The target of their attack is a global summit of world leaders in London.

The politicians of course don't believe or trust Hellboy, so he is inclined to go help ordinary people first, but the BPRD bosses talk him round into trying to save the day.

4 out of 5 stars Magical Genetics With A Bite.......2007-04-09

It's been more than an average few weeks for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defence team. Everyone is out on a monster case - Hellboy gets badly embarrassed by a dragon, a giant alligator is gobbling tourists in Venice, and Liz Sherman meets her match when she investigates a sighting of the phoenix in Greece, a giant Rukh is spotted dining on an entire herd of cattle. And that's just for starters. There are an epidemic number of sightings of not just every day monsters, but of beasts of the most legendary sort. Someone is mixing magic and biology in the worst way.

Kate Corrigan, a BPRD consultant, believes that an ancient book, The Book of Ways has been rediscovered and has fallen into the hands of Benedict Blake, a biologist tried to warn many of impending doom due to pollution and disregard for the natural world. Driven made when an attempt on his life killed his wife he has disappeared with the threat to make the world pay for its sins. Only Abby Paris, a BPRD werewolf really knows the answer and she has disappeared as well, and Abe suspects she is on a quest of her own to stop Blake. Soon London is under siege, and everyone is in a race to keep people alive and track down Blake.

The first thing one notices when opening this book is the small print size -- Hellboy books tend to be a bit short of detailed plots and development. But it is clear right from the beginning that Tim Lebbon is exceptional, and the result is a full length novel with a great deal of complexity. The second thing ou will notice is the this is more than a 'Hellboy' novel. The whole BPRD cast takes part, often independently, this also provides more depth to the story than we are used to. I've pointed out before that there is a good deal more to occult suspense than perpetual motion, and Lebbon proves my point ably.

4 out of 5 stars An Unlikely Hero.......2006-11-02

I actually find the idea of a demon fighting evil a really good thing. And this book brings together an entire crypto-zoologist's dream of special creatures: phoenix, the black dog of legend, the giant rukh (I've always seen it spelled "roc", but I knew about the legend), Minotaur, manticore, kraken--and so on. The idea that Memory is a dimension is also an interesting concept. And of course, the "is he a villain or not" demonic who claims to only want out of this world. My only ding is an overuse of profanity. As I have often stated, in character dialogue, one may and sometimes must, expect it or the character doesn't ring true. But when the author uses it to describe a scene in the story, I begin to feel he or she is taking an easy way out rather than finding a proper adjective to fit the action. Quoth the Raven...

3 out of 5 stars hellboy, unnatural selection.......2006-06-06

Overall, this was a enjoyable hellboy story. It was hard to get into at first due to the jumping back and forth between 1997 and 1970's. But the fight scenes between hellboy and the mythological creatures are very engaging. Its nice to see hellboy does gets his ass kicked multiple times despite his demon origin.

That said, this book is filled with too many weak villians and characters that just lacks any real personality to move the story along. In many ways, hellboy and BPRD seems to be just the bystanders that happened to get caught in the entire fiasco.

These books hold records that you will never want to hold. But, be heartened that if you do grace the pages, you will never know it. Check out the product description above if you want to know what you're getting into. These are some of the funniest stories and are short enough to read during commercials.

Somehow I wonder how many of my progeny will bless future volumes. Who knows, maybe it will even be me. I can only hope.

    Book Description

Willow's trying to earn a little pocket change by taking the usual teenage part-time job -- baby-sitting the neighbor's kid. But her child-care chores turn into a scene from a horror movie when the baby gives her the evil eye and attacks. Barely escaping the tiny terror, Willow can't forget the missing human child -- or the monstrous thing left in its place. The childish changeling keeps coming back to haunt and taunt her.

Buffy and her posse soon discover a possible connection between Willow's infant interloper and some strange artifacts Giles found at a local archaeological dig. The evil plaguing Willow was once trapped underground. Now that it has been unearthed by new construction on the property, it's ready to cause some major mischief...and worse.

    5 out of 5 stars great story.......2007-08-06

To be honest, I only read this book to get closer to completing my goal of reading all of the Buffy books; otherwise I would have discounted it. I would have truly missed out on a great read. This story is so original and suspenseful that it ranks amongst my favorite Buffy books now. Definatly read this book; you won't be disappointed

    1 out of 5 stars Huh?.......2005-05-30

I don't understand the high ratings on this book. It sucked. It was so boring. I like most of the Buffy books but this one was just a snoozer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Loved it.........2004-06-30

To be honest, I ordered this book out of boredom... I didn't expect it to be the best of books, but at least I would have something to read... I don't read often, books usually can't hold my interest long enough for me to finish them... I mostly read BTVS Books and Biographies/Autobiographies.

That said, I LOVED this book... Mel Odom is one of my favorite BTVS Authors, he's incredibly talented... This book had my interest from the beginning and I really couldn't put it down. I started reading it and finished it within a little over an hour, the way that the characters were written was very much like they were on the show... Their reactions to things, the way that they each talked... Very much like the 3rd season version of the characters on BTVS.

And I loved the whole Faery story... I don't want to spoil the book for anyone who hasn't read it, which i'll end up doing if I go into it anymore... So i'll just say this if you're a BTVS fan... Read this Book! Even if you haven't read many, or any, of the books and aren't sure if you'd like them.. Read this one.

I really do miss Buffy The Vampire Slayer, I still watch the reruns on FX and on Sunday nights on the WB.

3 out of 5 stars fun with faeries.......2004-03-25

The little baby Willow is sitting turns into a mean faery & warns Willow that if she doesn't help turn around the construction about to begin at a nearby park, her fate will be doomed.

It's an interesting premise- especially considering this book allows for more talk & research than some of the other overly action packed Buffy books. But, like so many Buffy books, once the 40 page action sequences begin- I could care less.

It's just that after watching the show- the action doesn't translate well onto the page, not to mention I never read action books. (Aside from Buffy & I only read the books because i miss the show).

The ending drips with Angel/Buffy cheese, but overall, the narrative does have a lot of fun faery facts & Willow is practically the star of the story (I love Willow).

I wouldn't say don't read it, just don't expect anything too great.

    4 out of 5 stars My Review.......2001-12-16

I loved this book. The details are great. Willow is the main character here, which is unusual but good. All Buffy fans should read this one.

    Book Description

A hungry enemy comes back for seconds . . .

    Man Eater

Sexy scientist Dr. Judith White, who first attempted to repopulate the earth with mutant, man-eating tiger people, has bounced back from extinction with a new and improved plan for world domination. She's putting her formula into a popular brand of bottled spring water that's making its way straight into the boardrooms and cocktail parties of Manhattan, where savagery is getting into full swing.

Remo and Chiun hit the Big Apple to check out the maulings. But even the cops have gone carnivorous and it literally is a jungle out there. Only one wild, wicked woman is capable of turning ordinary humans into slavering, slobbering jaws of death -- an old nemesis, the delectable but totally insane Dr. White. And when CURE's own wonder boy Mark Howard falls prey to her diabolical scheme, his top secrets may give the indestructible White the extra bite she needs to eat the Destroyer for lunch.

5 out of 5 stars The Tiger Lady Returns.......2003-04-12

Dr. Judith White is back with her genetic formula and is putting it into bottled water. She also has some designs on Remo and in the process of reaching him she infects Mark Howard with her genetic formula, turning him nto one of her animal/people. The only thing wrong with this book is it is Jim Mullaney's last for Gold Eagle. He leaves on a high note though and leaves me wanting more great adventures from him. His writing really brings back memories of the early stories by Sapir and Murphy. You can even read more about them in a re-issue of The Assassin's Handbook that you can also order from Amazon or through Warren Murphy's own web page.

I used this book for my research paper. I was writing about the Kayapo and their struggle to protect their habitat in the Amazon. This book gave me a very good summary of the history of them and many issues involved in their struggle. The author, Linda Rabben covers them precisely and logically. I recommend this book to all.
