5 out of 5 stars Great Textbook!.......2006-07-30

I just started my summer class a few weeks ago, and I definitely agree with the instructor that it's a truly great textbook! It's not as pricey as I initially thought it was going to be and it has a ton of art information. The CD and timeline are kind of useless, but I would still use them to study for exams or quizzes. If you want to learn about art in SOOO many ways, get this book because it's a treat!

4 out of 5 stars chosen paintings shown several times.......2006-05-01

I got this book for a class, and besides just using it for tests, I haven't opened it much. Most of the paintings in the first few chapters are also the same paintings in the last few chapters, though, and I thought it would have more variations. However, the info in each section is concise, easy to read, and the whole book is a great introduction for the beginner to the study of art.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for the begining Artist or Art lover.......2006-03-22

I found it to be detailed enough to learn about art without boring me. It was actually for a class I'm taking by found I read more chapters than required because it was a great overview on many diffent subjects from art to architecture

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-03-14

Received the book in time and actually it was very fast too. Product is great. A Million thanks.

the book is great but the service shipping to me was horrible. it follows my introduction to art history class very well.

    Book Description

In her revealing bestseller Call Me Anna, Patty Duke shared her long-kept secret: the talented, Oscar-winning actress who won our hearts on The Patty Duke Show was suffering from a serious-but-treatable-mental illness called manic depression. For nearly twenty years, until she was correctly diagnosed at age thirty-five, she careened between periods of extreme euphoria and debilitating depression, prone to delusions and panic attacks, temper tantrums, spending sprees, and suicide attempts. Now in A Brilliant Madness Patty Duke joins with medical reporter Gloria Hochman to shed light on this powerful, paradoxical, and destructive illness. From what it's like to live with manic-depressive disorder to the latest findings on its most effective treatments, this compassionate and eloquent book provides profound insight into the challenge of mental illness. And though Patty's story, which ends in a newfound happiness with her cherished family, it offers hope for all those who suffer from mood disorders and for the family, friends, and physicians who love and care for them.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and educational.......2007-07-02

I've always been a big fan of Patty Duke which is what prompted me to purchase the book. I knew a little bit about her illness from the movie "Call Me Anna" that came out in the eighties; however, nothing could've prepared me for the astonishing ways she pulled herself together after falling apart over and over again or for how long she dealt with her disorder until doctors were able to figure out what it was she had and how to treat it. Most importantly, this book teaches scientific information regarding neurotransmitters and mental illness. I can't believe how much I learned from this book while being entertained at the same time.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2007-06-02

This is an excellent book. It is more than Patty Duke's situation, which is very well presented in her own words. There are multiple examples of others experiences. It gave me a much greater understanding of my own experiences. It also helped de-stigmatized the disease for me. The single drawback is the discussion of Lithium; it was written before many of the current medications became available. This in no way detracts from the power of the book. I would, and have, high recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best book on Bipolar for the average reader.......2007-03-30

This book is one I recommend to any patient I suspect may have bipolar disorder in the differential. Patty Duke is a most lovable character who pours out her heart in an endearing autobiography. The chapters go back and forth between Patty Duke, telling her story (Which reads like an exciting novel) and a science writer who talks more in depth about bipolar- beautifully written throughout. This book is a must read, as well as a very fun read for anyone who think they may have bipolar or anyone who may love someone who has bipolar. Very inspiring and upbeat. Filled with humanness.

Also don't miss Kay Redfield Jameson's Autobiography An Unquiet Mind

5 out of 5 stars Awsome Book for Families and Bi-Polar sufferers.......2007-01-20

This book gives you a real insight as to what families of bi-polar patients and the patient himself goes though. There is a great deal of information on medications and their effects, what is good, what is not, what works, what doesn't, etc.

The book includes names of organizations where one can turn to along with phone numbers, addresses of the organizations. I bought five books for my family and friends so they might understand this disorder with a broader perspective. My daughter has had manic depressive disorder for 8 years and this book has given us hope.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book For Me!.......2006-09-01

I wasn't diagnosed officially with Bipolar II until Wednesday, March 27, 2003, but I'd already had this book for almost ten years at that point...because I'd suspected that I was a manic-depressive since 1991, after seeing a segment about both Bipolar and ADHD on ABC's "20/20" and the follow-up on ABC's "Nightline" that same night.

I had been self-medicating with marijuana for years until I was officially diagnosed, and I was then put on MY miracle drug -- Depakote ER, 500 mg tablets, take 4 every night...and for me, life is all right.

This book really helped me out a lot before I was diagnosed (with the RIGHT diagnosis, finally!) and it helped me out a lot afterwards.

I'd like to give it five stars, but I think that it needs updated with new information about Bipolar-type illnesses as it becomes known, and at least list a few of the resources that are available on the Internet, which did exist at the time the book was written, but was really only used by computer geeks and had never been heard of by the general public at the time this book was published.

It is a great starting point, however, if you need information on Bipolar illnesses (which there are quite a few of), and how a Bipolar or Bipolar II person acts, and why they do the things they do.

When I read this book originally, I saw myself in those pages, but I couldn't get any psychologist or psychiatrist to listen to me.

Thank the Goddess someone finally did! Stability is great :)

    Book Description

Chickens-why not? Tens of thousands of people in all areas of the country enjoy raising these birds, whether for food or companionship. You can, too, with this indispensable guide. Then again, you may want to read Living With Chickens just for the sheer joy of it.
Straightforward prose and dozens of clear, detailed illustrations gives any future chicken farmer the tools he needs to get started, from step-by-step instructions on building the coop to a brief background on chicken biology ("gizzard talk"); from hints on getting high-quality eggs from the hens, to methods for butchering. Vermonter Jay Rossier draws on his own experiences and those of his fellow poultrymen in discussing how to keep marauders from the chicken coop, the benefits of homemade grain versus commercial, and how to live (and sleep) with a rooster in your midst. Personal anecdotes, interesting facts, and lush, full-color photographs of the birds and their landscape round out this comprehensive book.

4 out of 5 stars coffee table book.......2007-09-21

The book has information about keeping chickens, but all the glossy pictures of chickens and the writing style made it seem like a coffee table book about chickens instead of a practical guide.

5 out of 5 stars The best overall chicken book.......2007-07-05

This is by far the best overall chicken book.I tried Story's guide, wow was that boring and dry. This was very easy to read cover to cover. This will tell you everything about raising them from A-Z. The best part is there are pictures and examples. I would recommend getting Choosing and keeping Chickens by Chris Graham to get a more in depth view of each breed, size, personality and it has great pictures. As a beginner I found I needed both books.

5 out of 5 stars Living with Chickens: Everything You Need to Know to Raise Your Own Backyard Flock.......2007-03-18

I have just finished reading this book. I loved it. It includes some general information and directions for finding out other needed information. In the back it includes hatchery and cooperative extension information for most states. It is full of wonderful pictures of the chickens doing their own thing. I feel that anyone that is not already raising chickens should at least read and enjoy this book. If you don't enjoy anything else about the book you will love the pictures and the stories that go along with them.

5 out of 5 stars Nice book! Recommended highly.......2006-02-17

Friendly style, full of information, & tons of special, vivid photos-- I read this cover to cover in a day and really enjoyed it. A GREAT book for the person who is thinking about starting a small backyard flock. One of my favorites. (The layout is unique, too- engaging and easy to read.)

I would strongly recommend this book.

I read this book cover-to-cover the first day and next morning that I got it from the library. Very clear and easy to understand even for a kid. The book is written with a touch of humor that makes it especially fun to read! There is BEAUTIFUL photography in this book. If you are thinking about getting chickens like I am, or already own them, you won't want to pass this book up! Happy Reading!

Hang a curtain too close to a fireplace and you run the risk of setting your house ablaze. Drive a car on a pitch-black night without headlights, and you dramatically increase the odds of smacking into a tree.

These are matters of common sense, applied to simple questions of cause and effect. But what happens, asks systems-behavior expert Charles Perrow, when common sense runs up against the complex systems, electrical and mechanical, with which we have surrounded ourselves? Plenty of mayhem can ensue, he replies. The Chernobyl nuclear accident, to name one recent disaster, was partially brought about by the failure of a safety system that was being brought on line, a failure that touched off an unforeseeable and irreversible chain of disruptions; the less severe but still frightening accident at Three Mile Island, similarly, came about as the result of small errors that, taken by themselves, were insignificant, but that snowballed to near-catastrophic result.

Only through such failures, Perrow suggests, can designers improve the safety of complex systems. But, he adds, those improvements may introduce new opportunities for disaster. Looking at an array of real and potential technological mishaps--including the Bhopal chemical-plant accident of 1984, the Challenger explosion of 1986, and the possible disruptions of Y2K and genetic engineering--Perrow concludes that as our technologies become more complex, the odds of tragic results increase. His treatise makes for sobering and provocative reading. --Gregory McNamee

    Book Description

Normal Accidents analyzes the social side of technological risk. Charles Perrow argues that the conventional engineering approach to ensuring safety--building in more warnings and safeguards--fails because systems complexity makes failures inevitable. He asserts that typical precautions, by adding to complexity, may help create new categories of accidents. (At Chernobyl, tests of a new safety system helped produce the meltdown and subsequent fire.) By recognizing two dimensions of risk--complex versus linear interactions, and tight versus loose coupling--this book provides a powerful framework for analyzing risks and the organizations that insist we run them.

The first edition fulfilled one reviewer's prediction that it "may mark the beginning of accident research." In the new afterword to this edition Perrow reviews the extensive work on the major accidents of the last fifteen years, including Bhopal, Chernobyl, and the Challenger disaster. The new postscript probes what the author considers to be the "quintessential 'Normal Accident'" of our time: the Y2K computer problem.

5 out of 5 stars This book will change the way you think........2006-07-09

This book will change the way you think. It's as simple as that. Really eye-opening and persuasive arguments and examples as to why the absence of accidents per se is not an adequate indicator of a system's safety. Near-accidents are a better metric. Fascinating!

4 out of 5 stars Recommend but there are some errors in the details.......2006-04-26

I purchased and read the book for the concepts but enjoyed the examples. However, I did find several errors in the events in which I am familiar. Specifically those of space flight. In as little as four pages (pp267-270) he makes three errors. It makes me wonder about the accuracy of the rest of the book's examples.

    Just for the record:
    1) He attributes the second orbital flight of Mercury to Scott Crossfield when in fact it was Scott Carpenter. Crossfield was an X-15 test pilot of great skill, while Carpenter has been noted as the "worst astronaut in the program" by Chris Kraft. There are many accounts of Mr. Kraft openly wondering how Carpenter got to be an astronaut in the first place let alone being allowed to fly into space. This might better explain the events instead of it being a process - system problem.

    2) It was almost certain then, and now after the recent recovery of Gus Grissom's Mercury capsule absolutely confirmed, that Gus did NOT blow the hatch. This would have been know at the time of my copy's printing.

    3) It was Glenn's heat shield not the landing pack, which the status light indicated had come loose. This would have explained the reluctance of ground control to inform the astronaut since not much could have been done if true.

Of course these are minor and don't lead the author to any significantly different conclusions than if they were corrected. But the sloppiness does make me lower it to a 4 instead of 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars The Beginnings of an Influential Theory.......2006-01-31

having obtained a second hand copy of "Normal Accidents" in the original 1984 edition, it is fascinating to see how many of the accident scenarios are still valid today. When compared with Lagadec's thesis published in 1982 ("Major Technological Risk", Pergamon Collection Futuribles, o. o. p.), the style is easier to understand, and the book is leaning a little more towards US culture and thinking of the 1980s. Incidentally, Lagadec himself reflected in a 1997 paper how "Normal Accident Theory" had become one of the generic views that engineers and/or sociologists had developed since the early 1990s. Even in 1996, Hood and Jones ("Contemporary Debates in Risk Management") quote Perrow as one of the significant contributors to the fundamental debate in risk management.
I very much enjoyed reading one of the early works in disaster and accident theory. Recommended without hesitation, and essential when you are looking for a deeper understanding of the theories that are around today.

4 out of 5 stars A central text of sociology and business.......2005-10-04

Perrow sets out a framework for thinking about the causes of 'normal' i.e. unpreventable accidents by looking at the coupling of features in a system and then overlays the potential severity of a failure to draw conclusions about the real reasons for catastrophes beyond the often useless explanations of user error and acts of God. This is a book that is more often quoted than read, which is a pity as it is well written and thoughtful, though the final attacks on social power relations are a bit over the top.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent in depth study of accidents.......2005-09-21

This book is well written and informative. Gets sort of heady at times with the analysis but well worth the read if you enjoy system accident analysis.

    Book Description

From acclaimed designer and art therapist Lucia Capacchione comes a practical and sensitive guide to sharing our mind, body, and spirit with our own feelings.

We cannot control our emotions; however, unless we recognize and express them, they can end up controlling us. The author of ten self-help classics, including Recovery of Your Inner Child and The Power of Your Other Hand, Lucia Capacchione now introduces us to the methods she has developed in workshops and with private clients for achieving an emotional equilibrium through artistic expression.

It is only through letting our emotions come forth and understanding them that we can further the process of self-acceptance and healing. The simple exercises outlined by Capacchione teach us to express pent-up anger by drumming, release hurt feelings by molding clay, and contact our inner child by writing with our non-dominant hand. Clearly, self-discovery has no limits.

Illustrated throughout with art therapy projects of her clients and rich with inspiring stories of personal triumph, Living with Feeling presents the key to making peace with our emotions by giving them a voice and the power of creative expression. Bibliography. Notes. Index.

5 out of 5 stars Good practical book for learning to work with feeling through artistic expression.......2007-02-03

This is a very practical book for working with feelings in a non-cognitive way. It is especially geared toward reclaiming buried feelings through the use of artistic expression. It contains many useful activities using a variety of mediums and for many people this type of work is quite powerful. I work in the psychology field and while I don't focus on this area as a specialty, I have witnessed the power of these techniques first hand. These ideas have also been useful to me in my own self-development work.

5 out of 5 stars Living With What...?.......2002-04-30

If you were raised, as I was, with parents who believed it was simply not all right to feel certain feelings; then, as I have, you will find this book liberating and very helpful. After reading the book, I wanted to particapate in a workshop session based on these writing and lead by the author. Because it took place with art therapy students at a graduate school in New York, NY where I live and practice psychotherapy, I was able to attend. What happened during the workshop class seemed nothing short of amazing as everybody in the group discussed their experience of new feelings while doing exercises from the book. Being given access to new parts of our feelingful life is a very useful gift -- that's what this book delivers!
Dr. Capacchione vividly describes the nine different areas of feeling and put forth ways that each of us, through simple, doable, exercises might bring forth those feelings in our own experience. I realized, while working with the ideas in this book, how I have avoided experiencing certain feelings that I surely must be having during a work day. But, why was I not able to feel all my feeling, all the time, and use the whole range of them to construct a better way of living? Dr. Capacchione's has written a guidebook for living in a new way, for engaging in a new process which is constructive and developmental in core ways .
Like many baby boomers, I, too, was trained from early childhood that any sign of certain feelings; curiosity (killed the cat), anger (bad), self interest (selfish), thoughtfulness (sullen) would make me into a "not nice person". This old notion from my youth, methodically suppressing and repressing whole areas of feelings, within me, in order to be a 'nice' person, became a very bottled-up, unhealthy way to live. It has become clear to me from reading this book that my living must include the art of feeling as I go into the fullness of adulthood and maturation.
The good news is that the work of learning to live with feelings is not too difficult. In fact, a lot of feelings are just plain fun, as I think you'll find this book to be. Take heart. Living life more fully and more naturally will bring about change for the better. This wonderful book has opened up a whole new area of understanding and healthy expression for me, my colleagues, students and patients. I highly recommended it to you. Marilyn H. Hamlin, PhD.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique, Complete, and Effective Approach to Emotions Work.......2002-04-27

This is like having a series of workshops in a book. One can have his own workshop experience in whatever arts media and feelings arena he desires. Capacchione invites, indeed encourages the reader to experience, accept and express his emotions using an entire menu of sensory, experiential exercises. Offered for our pleasure are drawing, collage, painting, clay, music, dance, mask making and voice dialog. She explains the positive outcomes of using arts media to express feelings, useful examples from her workshops participants and invaluable resources for further study. This author is an artist with a background in psychology. She has done an extensive amount of work in the expressive arts field, including authoring many self-help books in this genre. I found this book to be a very positive, hands-on tool to use myself and to use with my clients.

5 out of 5 stars What we all need to help us with the turmoil of last year.......2002-04-26

Lucia Capacchione uses all of the artistic modalities to touch those emotions which are often difficult to express. She leads the reader through a series of easy to follow directions and exercises which helps you tap into emotions and then interpret your own words and pictures. Whether you are an artist or a novice, you will be guided through this self discovery process and given samples and testimonials along the way. Capacchione helps you capture, express and understand the your feelings which will release you and allow you to move on. I loved the format of her books, unlike most of the therapuetic books on the market, she offers you exercises that you can do without needing an instructor, follow up projects to expand the process and sample drawings and stories which anyone can relate to. If you are still feeling the effects of the 9-11, this book allows you to process those emotions in the privacy of your own home.

1 out of 5 stars old concepts presented without feeling.......2002-01-02

Lucia Cappachione has written a number of reasonably good books for the popular press over the past decades-- unfortunately, this newest book indicates that she has nothing left to say that is new or innovative. The exercises and examples are tired and over-used and are not "pioneering" as she claims. I am disappointed that a fine publisher like Tarcher fell for this material and added it to their line of self-help books.
The reader who is looking for something substantial on how art taps emotions might look to Pat Allen's Art is a Way of Knowing. Living with Feeling lacks both depth and feeling and substance. I hope that Cappachione will someday take a risk and really dig down deep for some new material that will help readers once again use art as healing in a meaningful way and that she will quit rushing to get another book out onto the shelves just to make a quick sale.

1 out of 5 stars Not a Holistic Health book.......2007-07-09

This book is a confluence of holistic healing, new age and "we are all little gods" philosophy. Unless you agree with the stance that all our problems are caused by someone else, do not buy this book. An excerpt from page 13, "Almost half my female clients did not want children, yet most had them anyway, mainly due to erroneous programming installed by the church and parents, plus the basic societal/religious dogma that has overlaid our society for centuries." There are subtitles: Choosing your Race and Choosing your Gender.
I love my books but this one will be in the dumpster file.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Art Martin Has Found The Path To Perfect Healing!.......2006-11-20

Two months ago, I was living in chronic pain, completely debilitated and barely able to carry out the basic functions of my daily living. I was all of 39 years old. I had exhausted the medical system to find only a disempowering system of specialized professions with no answers for my healing - only Band-aid fixes. I was simply in survival mode, actually wanting to die at a deep level to escape from the pain in my body.

Than a dear friend of mine gave me Dr. Martin's book. I began reading it and immediately became glued to the information being presented to me. I have to admit, though, as I read further, many of the ideas challenged my conventional thinking and my mainstream religious base. I put the book away for a week but then found myself drawn to it like a magnet. As I opened my mind to the possibility of the truth being presented in this amazing book, I began to see that the pain I was living in was all a manifestation of my mind's twisted and distorted programming that had developed from my birth and childhood experiences.

I contacted Dr. Martin and flew 2,500 miles to meet with him to "bring this book to life" within my own body. With his assistance and expertise, I was able to truly listen to the messages my body was giving me and found myself being confronted with the reality of how bitter and resentful I had become in my life. This buried anger and victimhood was the root of my pain. As I connected with myself, humbled myself to be in a place of complete unconditional love, I found my true source of healing: Me. Our bodies truly are equipped to be well, free of disease, free of limitations, and free of pain. It simply comes down to the art of listening and with a willingness to embrace love and forgiveness.

I have my life back because of the information presented in this book. I highly recommend this book to you. You're reading this review which only tells me you are seeking wellness and searching for an answer to your pain. Look no further. 5 out of 5 stars Life Changing Book.......2005-04-12

The book is awesome. I read it in two days. As a registered nurse for the past 15 years, I especially related to the books findings since I see the failure of western medicine & how western medicine is just a business to keep the client well for a little while before needing more drugs or surgery to again fix the same problem. This book shows YOU how to HEAL YOURSELF & CURE yourself so the challenge/situation will NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. That's real progress. I am thankful the author shared his findings in this book. I traveled to see him & experience neurocellular reprogramming myself. With his help I have definitely transformed my life. I saw myself in several of his case studies & you may too. Best wishes.

The healing Art Martin performed on me really did produce miraculous results. The book outlines all his secrets which he does not covet. He believes in empowering people to heal themselves by example. The theories in the book really do work and our bodies and our minds are directly connected and constantly talking to each other. When you recognize this and interject with new thought patterns your body's health immediately responds. A miracle to some but pure science to Art. My malady before I met Art included: Panic Attacks, Depression, Low Self Esteem, Loss of Purpose, Chronic BackPain, Joint Pain in entire body, Chronic Migraines, Daily Headaches, Powerlessness, Massive Weight Gain, Fibromyalgia. I am now pain free, migraine free, emotionally joyful, psychologically powerful and slim! THANK YOU ART MARTIN!

For 16 years I suffered with an "allergy" to citric acid. Everytime I had ANYTHING that contained citric acid my body would react.
After having read this book, I scheduled a session with the author. One session, and I no longer react to citric acid. I can eat anything containing citric acid; lemons, oranges, grapefruits...you name it!
Having had such success, I have taken several workshops with Art Martin and am using the techniques to help others.
      THANK YOU ART MARTIN!

5 out of 5 stars Living With Books.......2006-01-31

Lots of design information on home decorating with books. If floor space is being taken over by your collection of books and magazines, here is a book packed with creative book storage and display ideas for every room in the house including the bathroom. From "Design Matters" in Oregon Home, "There are options for the maximalists (walls covered floor-to-ceiling with books of all shapes) and minimalists (neatly piled art books as mantelpieces) in us all." So if you are a big-time book collector or just looking to stash your cookbooks, this book is inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Just what the title says..........2004-09-06

I'm shocked amd confused by the negative reviews I see here. This is a fabulous photo book. Even if you don't like how others seem to live with/use their books, you have to respect their ingenuity and funky designs. Some are quite sloppy, lol. This will get you thinking about how you can use books as decor and even furniture. This is far from boring, whereas another reviewer mentioned the Ellis book At Home With Books, which I thought was just AWFUL, a total snooze. I've never returned a book to a library so quickly! I was so impressed with LIVING WITH BOOKS that I added it to my wish list...and will be purchasing it today.

      2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2004-01-27

I had high hopes because I love reading about books, but this one was disappointing. I originally gave it three stars for the photos, which are worth looking at, but the text it pretty awful -- a serious drawback in a book aimed at compulsive book collectors. I took off one whole star specifically for a line that says something like, "It doesn't matter if books access is difficult, as long as it isn't completely impossible." Doesn't matter to whom? It does to this reader. I reread. I browse nostalgic favorites. I like to handle my books, and I need to be able to get to them. Also, a substantial number of the storage systems shown appear to be concerned more with style than with storage -- I didn't mind the coffee table constructed of books layered with glass, as those were old design catalogs and the whole was sort of a pun, but the grid system and a few other types of shelves that only contained a book or two here and there as placed by a decorator is really not my idea of living with books. Get this if you want pretty pictures. If you're really interested in books themselves and how they are stored, try Henry Petroski's The Book and the Bookshelf instead.

      4 out of 5 stars pretty interesting.......2003-05-01

This is more of a coffe table book. It's full of interesting photographs of, what else, books. The pictures show books incorporated into interesting architecture, unique shelving and storage for books, home libraries and offices, etc. The text offers advice and commentary on displaying and storing books in practical, unique, and interesting ways. If you're a bookworm and/or collect lots of books, you would enjoy paging through Living With Books.

4 out of 5 stars Books in their natural habitats . . ........2000-11-29

I have a feeling the previous reviewers were expecting a how-to book of home construction projects. Actually this is more of a tour guide. It's fascinating to discover the many creative, ingenious, and very original ways architects and ordinary booklovers have found to store books, display them, and enjoy being in their presence. Face it -- one never has enough bookshelves. And some of these homes are definitely masquerading as libraries! Here are bookshelves up under the eaves of an older house, or installed over the doorways in the hall, or built into closets and cupboards and under kitchen counters. Others are freestanding on metal shelves and poles and rigged like a ship's masts. There are small libraries built into the landings of staircases and others that cover entire walls of bedrooms. Some are two tiers deep, with the front one moving sideways on rollers. Others share space with lamps, TV sets, telephones, clocks, computers, ancient artifacts, photographs, and knick-knacks. And the one thing all the arrangements depicted in this book have in common is, none of them -- even the most attractively arranged -- are just for show. One look at the worn covers and frayed jackets tells you these books are the constant companions of their owners.

      Book Description

      * Displays innovative techniques for flower arranging * Over 200 photographs * Sakul Intakul has made floral installations for the Queen of Thailand * Sleek, contemporary, cutting edge design

Flowers have always been an integral part of the cultural fabric of Thailand and a constant reminder of the country's Buddhist heritage and identity. As in other Asian cultures, flowers are lavishly used in Thailand to mark rituals and rites of passage; they are indispensable in age-old acts of worship, in celebrations, and in daily life. On their way to work, many Thais offer flowers and a heartfelt prayer at wayside shrines. Every day, scores of women at the royal court create floral offerings for the venerated Buddha images in Bangkok's temples and palaces. Thai Airways routinely presents orchid corsages to female passengers.

This stunning and refreshingly original book goes beyond the everyday: it elevates flowers from mere floral arrangements to meditative floral "installations." Created from a combination of exotic and colorful tropical flowers, plant materials--fibers and leaves from banana plants and coconut trees, culms and twigs from bamboo--and unconventional materials like wire netting, harmoniously blend a strong, usually three-dimensional, structure with the sweet and subtle elements of flowers. The philosophy behind the arrangements, the interiors or occasions for which they are appropriate, and a brief explanation of the techniques and materials employed will inspire readers to create their own artistic arrangements.

I own hundreds of books on all types of design. This book on design with tropical flowers is the absolute most beautiful I have. The ideas depicted in this book are very simple for the most part and easy to do. And yet, the designs create a spectacular effect.
