5 out of 5 stars A Balanced Approach - 4th Edition.......2007-02-10

I purchased this book for a class I took in spring 06 and found it extremly helpful. I've applied the balance approach method in working with young children. I've also applied the information helping my 3 year old learn to read. He is now 4 and enjoys reading. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!!!.......2006-12-27

I found this book to be fantastic!!!! The green pages at the back give many great ideas for teachers of literacy.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2006-03-11

I needed to order this book for a class. It is well written and easy to read. As a reading teacher I can say that I will keep this book as a reference long after the class has ended. This edition comes with a CD (or DVD) which I have not previewed yet, but the instructor of my class raves about it.

5 out of 5 stars A must have!!.......2003-03-08

I was first introduced to this book in one of my graduate literacy courses and I have been hooked every since. The teachers at my school pass it around constantly looking for ideas. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that there are real teachers giving real examples of what works in their classrooms. There are no strategies that seem too hard implement in your classroom, because the layout is right there!! You know it can be done and it words because the examples in the book are proof! You don't feel like you are reading about some ideal or Utopia of a classroom. You are reading about REAL classrooms. I absolutely love it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for teachers.......2002-11-17

This is an excellent resource. It is concise and contains a wealth of information. I teach second grade and am working on a Master's degree in literacy. I am finding this book to be invaluable. Much of the information is sorted into charts for easy referencing. So many of the books I have read lately seem to ramble on and on. This book makes it's point and moves on to other salient information. I get rid of so many of the professional books I purchase after I read them. This one is a keeper. It is very pertinent to the current trend in improving the literacy of our children.

1 out of 5 stars College textbook price-gouging going on here........2005-12-04

$67 for a paperback book is highway roberry.

Have been pricing out college textbooks on Ebay, Amazon, and the college bookstore. It's a bloody medieval guild these publishers have going here and professors who insist on the latest editions of texts are aiding and abetting the rip-off.

This is monopolisitic practice if I've ever seen it. If the industry doesn't rachet down this greed-fest, someone else will - and as far as I'm concerned, it can't happen too quickly. Shame on you all.

5 out of 5 stars Here is what counts.......2000-08-24

I am an affectionate critic of "Legacies," as both editors were teachers of mine and many of the contributors were co-teachers with me in the mid-1990s. Regardless, I used the book for several years and the results speak volumes.

This is a college literature/composition reader that tries to do it all -- and succeeds. For its hefty heft, one must acknowledge that each lesson plan (day-to-day lesson plans handed happily to you by real teachers, talented teachers) belongs here. I used many of them before they were "lesson plans" -- they engage and involve students.

Whether you are a reader/student simply looking for a great resource of singular texts or a college literature professor/adjunct composition instructor searching for sure-fire ways of directing your students away from the window and towards what counts -- "Legacies" is the book.

Book Description

THE CHALLENGE OF EFFECTIVE SPEAKING is a classic in the field. Written by true teachers of public speaking who have been in the classroom for many years and who have adapted their methods to best meet the needs of their changing student body, this Thirteenth Edition stays true to what has made it a market-leading text for hundreds of thousands of students. THE CHALLENGE OF EFFECTIVE SPEAKING presents the speechmaking process in a six-step framework based on classical and contemporary theory. The straightforward writing style and effective use of examples enables students to understand and effectively perform key speechmaking activities. The six-step framework emphasizes topic selection, audience analysis and adaptation, effective research (including appropriate use of Internet resources), organization (with emphasis on outlining), language and delivery. The six action steps are introduced in generic form and then later adapted to follow principles of informative and persuasive speaking. THE CHALLENGE OF EFFECTIVE SPEAKING prepares students to take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it to their everyday lives.

Book Description

The nation's premier communications expert shares his wisdom on how the words we choose can change the course of business, of politics, and of life in this country

In Words That Work, Luntz offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the tactical use of words and phrases affects what we buy, who we vote for, and even what we believe in. With chapters like "The Ten Rules of Successful Communication" and "The 21 Words and Phrases for the 21st Century," he examines how choosing the right words is essential.

Nobody is in a better position to explain than Frank Luntz: He has used his knowledge of words to help more than two dozen Fortune 500 companies grow. He'll tell us why Rupert Murdoch's six-billion-dollar decision to buy DirectTV was smart because satellite was more cutting edge than "digital cable," and why pharmaceutical companies transitioned their message from "treatment" to "prevention" and "wellness."

If you ever wanted to learn how to talk your way out of a traffic ticket or talk your way into a raise, this book's for you.

4 out of 5 stars Luntz's "1984".......2007-09-30

If you want to know how you are being manipulated, Frank Luntz will tell you how he does it in his candid book.

5 out of 5 stars Clear. Concise. Comprehensive........2007-09-28

Dr. Luntz illustrates his 10 Rules of Effective Language in the subtitle of his book Words that Work: It's Not What You Say, It's What People Hear. His 10-rule, 10-word system proves the power of language.

Disturbingly accurate examples show the impact and importance of language. What gets wired in us and why? What moves us emotionally? What makes us spend? What connects us? Words are ripples.

Lutz reveals how we get so caught up in words that we fail to communicate. Consider leaders who speak in alphabet soup and spoil our language and understanding.

Like fine embroidery, words follow design; and design is seen differently by everyone with eyes.

Using case studies as examples, Luntz makes points about how passage of time affects words, how disordered words can cause dissension and how new words shade new meanings.

Most of all, he states, what we say is who we are. He's right. Think about it.

2 out of 5 stars Brevity as an Effective Communication Skill (would that it were!).......2007-09-10

Mr. Luntz sites brevity as an effective communication skill, yet he goes on and on and on with his examples and repeats himself throughout the book.

He uses the book as a vehicle to promote his Republican platforms, which is boring and annoying.

He is a little impressed with himself and is not afraid to share that with the reader. An especially distasteful example of this is his self-serving introduction about performing for Democrats and celebrities at Ariana Huffington's home.

He tries to imitate Steven Levitt's style of writing but he's just not that interesting or cool.

4 out of 5 stars WORDS THAT WORK.......2007-09-08

"Words That Work: It's Not What You Say, It's What People Hear" by Frank Luntz is a modern day "how to win friends and influence people" for the 21st century. "Words That Work" is a good book but the best part is the '10 Rules of Effective Language' in the first few chapters, which is basically the whole point of the book.

You may not want to read the other chapters because the book does surprisingly focus also on how businesses can use words. You can pretty much ignore the Publisher's Weekly criticism that this book is partisan. Luntz sights good and bad examples of communication from both Democrats and Republicans. His first anecdote deals with giving a seminar at Arriana Huffington's home for the Hollywood Elite!

People who don't care about politics or business will probably get bored with this book. But if you only get half-way through the book you will be convinced that "It's Not What You Say, It's What People Hear".

"MoveOn.Org" Democrats who try to smear the lessons Frank Luntz gives in this book may do so at your own peril.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to communicate better, buy this book.......2007-09-07

Great book from a man who knows how to communicate. Don't let tags such as 'conservative' or 'Republican' prevent you from basic truths about communicating more effectively. Frank Luntz knows what most politicians, business people and marketers do not: It's not about them, it's about your audience. Or to put it more effectively, "It's not what you say, it's what people hear."

If you want to become a better sales person, a better pastor, a better politician, a better leader, or a better communicator then buy this book. If you have the greatest idea in the world but can't tell people what it is, it's worthless. If you have a vision but can't get other people to follow, you will never lead.

For me, this book boils down to one word: Results.

Frank Luntz writes a great book to help anyone who wants to communicate better.

5 out of 5 stars Multi Media Public Speaking Training.......2006-07-19

'Audience Centered' seems to be an obvious off-shoot of the teaching styles, that have become hyper-popular over the last decade or two, that claim to be 'Student Centered'. Is it just a buzz word, or is there something in it? As another reviewer points out, Audience Centered public speaking dates back at least as far back as Aristotle.

In keeping with the new-fangled approaches towards learning, 'Pubic Speaking: An Audience Centered Approach' offers the student a full multi-media experience, that is reflected in the price. However I love such an approoach as it allows the student to learn in his or her preferred learning style.

While I don't need to go into the contents of the course because the product description by the publisher is more than adequate. This renewed package though, is a veritable collection of expert advice on all aspects of public speaking, from preparing to completion. What is more, you can actually see the speeches being delivered through examples provided by online video clips.

Without a doubt the price for this package is a little steep. You might fid it worth it, or you might not. Value is so subjective after all, but 'Public Speaking: An Audience Centered Approach' certainly takes advantage of the many more learning channels available today, than a book alone can, or even an audio/book course.

5 out of 5 stars The Sixth and Ever Better Edition.......2006-07-11

You can't say that the audience-centered concept used in this book was pioneered by them. After all, in the first paragraph the authors give credit to Aristotle for defining the elements of speechmaking as 'of speaker, subject and person addresed - it is the last one, the herer, that determines the speaker's end and object.'

The first edition of this book, about 15 years ago, set the tone for what has now become the sisth edition, with each edition improved by audience feedback and new educational concepts. The general concept of keeping the audience at the center of of the speakers mind through all of the steps in the process.

Of course, this does not mean that the speaker tells the audience only what they want to hear; to do that would not convey anything to the audience but a good feeling. Some of the example speeches, 'I Have a Dream,' Martin Luther King, Jr., speak to people holding views very opposed to his.

The highly illustrated book is carefully organized with a mixture of text, tables, drawings, comments and questions to maintain the students interest while educating him. Indeed these techniques are some that can be used by the student in his speeches.

4 out of 5 stars Good copy.......2005-09-17

I know that this is a teacher's edition but I presumed that because it was, it would have come with the DVD which is included in the student's addition. Other wise the book is exactly the same as the student's edition and was sealed as stated. Overall, I am pleased with the transaction.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read- great to use.......2000-04-25

This is a really good book. I used it for a college class on public speaking, and I would have been lost without it. It covers things that you always forget to include, and great hints on how to increase your confidence and persuade an audience. For someone like me who was terrified, but no longer is of public speaking, and for those who just need a refrsher course, this book is brilliant.

Book Description

Knuth's multivolume work, widely recognized as the definitive description of classical computer science, is now available in an attractive, boxed set. The three volumes included in this set have each been revised recently to reflect developments in the field. As earlier editions clearly demonstrated, they comprise an invaluable resource in programming theory and practice for students, researchers, and practitioners alike. Countless readers have spoken about the profound personal influence of Knuth's work. Scientists have marveled at the beauty and elegance of his analysis, while ordinary programmers have successfully applied his "cookbook" solutions to their day-to-day problems. All have admired Knuth for the breadth, clarity, accuracy, and good humor found in his books.

See descriptions of each individual volume for more information.

5 out of 5 stars Data Structures, Algorithms, Performance, Analysis.......2007-08-24

This is a classic book on algorithm analysis and also in programming techniques. The first one for which author create a hypothetical computing machine (he call it MIX), his own style to describe algorithms, a machine operation instruction and data representation, an assembly language (he call it MIXAL) for map algorithms and data structures into reality.

In another sense: it's a self-contained book.

Each chapter includes a historical review of concepts and methods.

Important topics for Volume 1
-----------------------------
* Section 1.2. Mathematical basement for algorithm performance analysis. Includes a review of Numbers, Powers, Logarithms, binomial coefficients, and also an example of algorithm analysis using "Kirchhoff's first law" for inputs/outputs (flaw to/from each step).

* Section 1.3. Description of the hypothetic computing machine (MIX): memory word, registers, comparison and overflow indicators, input/output device names, machine instruction format, machine instructions.

* Section 1.3.2. Description of the assembly language (MIXAL). Includes an interesting diagramed relation between machine instruction codes, and assembly language representation.

* Section 1.4.1. Introduce concepts of subroutine and co routine. Co routine is described as a team of sub-programs ideal for multi-pass algorithms (the kind used for processing a stream input).

* Section 1.4.3. Introduce in the field of interpretive routines and simulators. The author tells you how good programmers are at the same time good machine designers (as is the same today with virtual machines and little languages as Java). It includes a simulator program for the hypothetical MIX computing machine. You will learn how a state machine or sequential machine is implemented using a so called Control Routine (complement this reading with section 5.1 of "Computer Organization & Design" by Patterson and Hennessy - see my review for that book).

* Section 2.2.5. Describes the use of doubly linked list data structure by using a discrete simulation example (author use previously reviewed concepts like co routine and control routine).

* Section 2.3.2. Describe binary trees. The highlight of this section is a "Differentiation" algorithm. The author uses an algorithm to traverse a tree in post-order with each node representing a symbol. He then implements the algorithm using a control routine like the one implemented in Sections 1.4.5 and 2.2.5. The control routine includes a "Jump Table" for processing each node.

In resume, the book describes important topics for past and present programmers. I recommend you to read "Computer Organization & Design" by Patterson and Hennessy as an intro. Then read this one. Also you can complement this read with "Fascicle 1." by Donald E. Knuth, which describes an advanced MIX computing machine called MMIX (a 32 bit hypothetical RISC machine similar to DLX machine used on "Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach - 2d edition" by Patterson and Hennessy.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but too dificult understanding.......2007-07-26

I do not use to speak English, but this book give a lot of theorems that cannot be understanded if we don't investigate by ourselves.

That make me a question: why I take a book if I need its bibliography to use it? Obviously, it could be I'm not too intelligent for this book. But I prefer the first tomes, where everyone can understand slowly or not every quiz.

Despite of all, this book offers us solutions in a pack (as only Knuth can do) to program the best querys when invariant is not iterable.

3 out of 5 stars Commands a huge snob appeal but in reality half-useless.......2007-02-22

Would be very good were it not for MIX. Sorry, I can't be bothered with it, life's too short. Otherwise very good: clear and concise writing, all's very relevant, discussion deep, all's great -- re-write it in C and I'll give it five stars.

This may not have been the case a thousand years ago when this book was written, but today there's enough good literature of this kind to not worry about TAoCP.

The books' structure and depth are somewhat unique though, so maybe this set is worth having if you got a lot of spare time and some spare money, but remember, for most people the sample code will be inaccessible: it's written in an unreal BS assembly language.

4 out of 5 stars Yeah, but is it art?.......2005-12-10

Twenty five years ago, after five years of experience programming scientific applications (mostly math stuff, not much real programming beyond algorithms) I began a job programming business applications. At that time, there was very little general communal knowledge about very basic stuff we take for granted today like searching, sorting, memory allocation, data structures...

I began my collection with Knuth and another book (no longer in print) dedicated to data structures. These books defined me as a programmer. I learned MIX only because, as a programmer, I felt that I should be able to understand Knuth's abstraction. I admit that I was frustrated by having to do this. Ironically, even back then, the "other book" used, what was the de facto standard for generically describing algorithms, an ALGOL like language-very pretty!

Many of us have looked forward to Knuth rewriting his artful collection to satisfy our sense of aesthetics. We don't consider that he would have to repeat this huge task over and over again. Or (save me from this one) he could produce an obnoxious series of books titled "The Art of Computer Programming in C", "The Art of Computer Programming in C++", "The Art of Computer Programming in JAVA", "The Art of Computer Programming in C#", and (my favorite) "The Art of Computer Programming for Dummies". I thank Knuth for not doing this, although the last would certainly have a wide audience. Publishers know what they are about.

Another reason, in my humble opinion, that Knuth probably holds to MIX is that the latest generation of programmers do not have a clue what it is like to program a machine directly, or what is happening underneath the hood. There is a huge leap from MIX to MACRO, but the basic principles are still relevant.

The bottom line: YOU CAN COMPLETELY IGNORE MIX! All the relevant ideas are explained in simple plane English and the algorithms in structured English. Those who would prefer not to understand, but to simply cut and paste code, you are simply out of luck.

Now, if that isn't insulting enough (you caught me on a good day (after 32 years of programming I have come to hate computers and ...)) you would be amazed at how many self proclaimed senior programmers (programmers with more than three years of experience?) can't write an algorithm to save their lives.

BUY THE BOOKS! THEYRE A BARGAIN!

By the way, you all should read some of Knuth's other works. How many of us know that Knuth was an important player in getting rid of GOTO statements? I haven't written a GOTO statement in over twenty years! If my memory serves me (on a good day) Knuth wrote in an April edition of the ACM a paper titled, "Goto Bad, ComeFrom Good". He would be pleased to know that he anticipated the Publish-Subscribe Architectural Pattern.

5 out of 5 stars A classic work where C, Java, ... do not have its place.......2005-11-28

The Art of Computer Programming is a classic work. The three first volumes cover only the basic core of programming techniques. There are enough exercices, with solutions, to keep you busy for the rest of your life. Several reviewers expressed a dislike at the MIX language used in these three volumes. But there is usually a pseudo-code description of the algorithm that can readily be converted to whatever "X" language you prefer or happen to enjoy on a particular day. I would never see Java (ouch!), C, Pascal, as being appropriate for this work. It would simply ruined the whole work. These languages have a semantics that is too imprecise. Knuth has gone one step further of including pseudo-code by providing precise code in a machine language that he has precisely described. What is needed is a new machine language closer to today's machine; and Knuth is working on that...but you will not find it in these three volumes.

Fascicle 1 of volume 1 has been published recently (summer 2005)-- for the final edition of this work with more volumes-- with a new machine language, the MMIX. It is a clear improvement on MIX. But we will have to wait for the final edition to see everything come together with MMIX. Go Don!

Book Description

Exemplary teacher research has established that explicit teaching plays a vital role in the K-8 classroom, with particular benefits for struggling readers. This book is a practical resource for explaining reading to students who do not learn to read easily. Identified are 22 major skills and strategies associated with vocabulary development, comprehension, word recognition, and fluency. Ways to explain each skill or strategy are illustrated with abundant concrete examples, which teachers can use as starting points for developing lessons tailored to the needs, strengths, and interests of their own students. The book also shows how to move from the teacher's explanation to the student's independent use of new concepts, and how to embed explicit teaching within a context of rich, engaging literacy experiences.

5 out of 5 stars Analytical explanation of reading.......2007-01-04

I am a tutor for third and fourth graders (employed by the school) and have found this book to be priceless in explaining the strategies of reading to 8, 9 and ten year olds - my target audience. The book is structured well and offers many examples of how to help struggling readers learn the "secrets" of good readers. After looking at several other 'Reading Comprehension' books, I chose this one based on the TOC and the foreward. It has proven to REALLY help me clarify each objective and teach the invisible process of active reading to my students. I'm very excited about the book and what it has to offer. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-02-20

I bought this book last year from Amazon, after being recommended it by a resource literacy teacher. It is very helpful to me, a classroom teacher. I would recommend it as great value for any teacher. I recently had the pleasure of hearing G Duffy speak at a day's conference here in New Zealand. He was so clear, so able to show the recent history of the teaching of reading, and how we might go about showing students the skills of comprehension, and what good readers do. In this book, G Duffy helps teachers model what good readers do. He is realistic and down to earth.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Literacy Coaches.......2005-05-04

This is a wonderful book to use while working with teachers in your building. Use it as a resource for yourself or share it with teachers to support what you are saying or modeling in their classrooms. After you have identified the strategy or skill the students are having trouble with, locate the skill in the index. Then read through the pages as Dr. Duffy describes the conceptual understanding that must be in place for the students to learn the skill. He also outlines how to introduce the skill, model the thinking, scaffold towards independence, apply it in reading and writing, and determine how to know if the lesson was successful. Some topic categories are vocabulary, comprehension strategies, word recognition, and fluency.

5 out of 5 stars Individual chapters cogently provide examples.......2003-10-14

Gerald G. Duffy is a former classroom teacher and professor emeritus at Michigan State University. He draws upon his many years of experience and his considerable expertise in Explaining Reading: A Resource For Teaching Concepts, Skills, And Strategies to provide the reader with a solid guide for aiding in their teaching literacy to students who are slow to absorb the skill. Individual chapters cogently provide examples and ideas for explaining vocabulary, teaching word recognition, comprehension strategies, and a great deal more. Explaining Reading is highly recommended as an excellent and detailed advice guide -- especially for classroom teachers and home schoolers involved in a literacy instructional program.

5 out of 5 stars My Advice.......2007-07-29

I speak to audiences all over the country. After every speech there are always two or three people who come up and ask advice on getting published. I give them the customary talk about writing every day and having persistence in the face of rejection. I also tell every one of them to go home, get on Amazon and order Writer's Market.

4 out of 5 stars It is a tool which may be of help .......2007-06-07

This work is a tool which may be of help to you as a writer. It is written in its introductory overview pages with , what seems to me, good sense and understanding. There is a lot of good advice about how to query, and where to look for markets, and how in general to approach the whole business of pursuing 'sales' of work. It is not a book which can tell you truly about how to write in a deep or interesting or uniquely individual way. That is not it's purpose.
But again I think it can be of help to many.
A couple of reservations from my own area of interest. Once they had a separate listing in the index on a topic which specially interested me "Judaism" . Now the publishers on Judaism are mixed up with the general Religion publishers.
I searched a couple of publishing houses I am thinking to send manuscripts to. The information provided was extremely scanty . But then again 'Writer's Market' does remind its user to supplement it by searching the websites of the publishers' listed.
Again it gives the rules and the etiquette for proper submission, gives information on pricing. It also includes some individual success stories from different areas of writing.
On the whole for the writer eager to sell work this is a work which truly may help.

3 out of 5 stars Basic information for fiction and non-fiction writers.......2007-05-17

I found the Writer's Market 2007 Deluxe Edition by Robert Lee Brewer to be informative; however, I had already located another publication that led me to the sources that I sought for promoting MY book.
Nonetheless, the Writer's Market is now a part of my book publishing/marketing reference resources collection.
Also, regardless of which book/magazine used as a source of information, it is ultimately up to the individual(s) to do the "leg work," or delegate the efforts to someone/others, in their particular promotion efforts.
At any rate, I believe that the book is worth purchasing.

5 out of 5 stars Writer's Market 2007.......2007-05-04

This is what I call the writer's bible as it includes a variety of marketplaces for your work. It's an essential book for all writers, published and unpublished.
It's a valuable research tool, and one that I encourage all of my students to purchase when they embark upon their writing careers.

Composition teachers throughout the English-speaking world have been pushing this book on their students since it was first published in 1957. Co-author White later revised it, and it remains the most compact and lucid handbook we have for matters of basic principles of composition, grammar, word usage and misusage, and writing style.

Book Description

This is the braille version of the timeless reference book. According to the St. Louis Dispatch, this "excellent book, which should go off to college with every freshman, is recognized as the best book of its kind we have." It should be the ". . . daily companion of anyone who writes for a living and, for that matter, anyone who writes at all" (Greensboro Daily New). "No book in shorter space, with fewer words, will help any writer more than this persistent little volume" (The Boston Globe). Two volumes in braille.

The book was in wonderful condition. It arrived in a timely manner. I would buy from you again.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide for writers of all ages.......2007-09-25

My son's teacher recommended this book when he was in middle school. He still refers to it in college as he pursues his writing career. My daughter needed her own copy for school because her brother wouldn't give his up! You really can't go wrong with this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good book........2007-09-07

It is good book, but you might find some styles are repeating with other books. It is good to learn from this author, but I also suggest learn more from other authors, too.

5 out of 5 stars Read it, Then Read It Again.......2007-09-06

This itsy bitsy tome is an ageless classic. I read it for the first time 20 years ago. Despite having never found grammar interesting before, I became hooked on the sharp little lessons. I read it again, to both delight and edification. And I'll read it once more, to remind myself of the rules that make English what it is and to smile at Prof. Strunk, long gone but very much alive in these pugnacious 80 pages. He's somehow managed to boil down the bones of the language and give you the absolute essentials. If you haven't read it, you're in for a treat and a pleasant surprise, especially if you don't care for grammar. This is truly short and sweet.

5 out of 5 stars Elements of Style review.......2007-09-05

This is an excellent book. All authors (or soon to be authors) should consider adding it to their core readings.
