Book Description
Never before in paperback: A New York Times Notable Book-the life and times of the first Negro League star inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame
Some say Satchel Paige was the greatest pitcher ever-and certainly his dazzling record of perhaps as many as 2,000 wins, first in the Negro Leagues and then in the integrated major leagues, ranks as one of the most remarkable athletic feats of the century. He also became famous for the advice he freely offered others, including the now legendary
"Don't look back, something might be gaining on you." Mark Ribowsky gives the best picture yet of life in the Negro Leagues as he brings to life a man whose act as a lovable eccentric with a golden arm masked a decidedly darker side as womanizer, hard drinker, and contract jumper always on the lookout for number one. Sporting News hailed Don't Look Back as "a fine and perceptive biography... that captures the essence of a complicated and terribly significant person."

Excellent bio,seperating myth from stereotype.......2001-03-09
Satchel Paige is an enigmatic figure in american histroy. Mention his name, people inevitably think of the negro leagues,or thta terrible bingo long movie. In fact, Paige was ,in many repects, the first modern ballplayer. He played for a percentage of the gate, would only pitch a couple of innings in these contests, had no compuction about jumping from team to team{or country to country}The minstel show, stephifetchit aura that he calculated with the all too eager white press was, of course, a huge ruse. He was a sometimes bitter man{quite understandably so}He knew, instinctively, that he was the best pitcher in the world{although, curiosly, his peers voted Smokey Joe williams better in a 1950 vote in the Pittsburgh Courrier} He despsed the Jim Crow laws, and what he had to do to get around them. HIs civil rights stands were taken in the 20's 30's and 40's, when such things often meant death. He pitched for what might have been the greatest team of all time{the Pittsburgh crawfords of the early 30's] Dimaggio called him ethe toughest pitcher he ever hit against. All of these nuggets are in this book. Mr. Ribowsky did a fine job here. Paige is a figure who should be celebrated for what he was:an american original,a species often sighted but rarely seen. A wonderful book!
Demi-God.......2000-07-28
After reading this book, I am utterly convinced that Satchel Paige is as much of a baseball legend as a Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth. This book not only entertains but it fascinates, so much that I would'nt be suprised if someone mistook this biography for a peice of baseball folklore or a non fictitious work designed to capture the imaginations of baseball fans. This book portrays the life of Robert Leroy Satchel Paige in a most interesting way. In some cases he stands biggerthan life portrayed as a demi-god in the face of the gods of Major League Baseball and in some cases his mortality is revealed in the very midst of his immortality, and this is what makes this portrayal so unique.
Book Description
Don't Look Back heralds the arrival of an exotic new crime series featuring Inspector Sejer, a smart and enigmatic hero, tough but fair. The setting is a small, idyllic village at the foot of Norway's Kollen Mountain, where neighbors know neighbors and children play happily in the streets. But when the body of a teenage girl is found by the lake at the mountaintop, the town's tranquillity is shattered forever. Annie was strong, intelligent, and loved by everyone. What went so terribly wrong? Doggedly, yet subtly, Inspector Sejer uncovers layer upon layer of distrust and lies beneath the town's seemingly perfect facade.
Critically acclaimed across Europe, Karin Fossum's Inspector Sejer novels are masterfully constructed, psychologically convincing, and compulsively readable, and are now available in the United States for the first time.

Hidden Lives.......2007-08-30
Don't Look Back, the first of Norwegian author Karin Fossum's Inspector Sejer novels to appear in the U.S., is a realistic police procedural that reminds the reader that identifying a murderer as often as not comes down to luck and sheer chance as it does to good detective work. Fossum sets her story in the kind of small town neighborhood where everyone believes that he knows everything about all of his neighbors. But, of course, that is never the case, and this psychological suspense novel is filled with well-developed characters who are living whole lives that are unsuspected by those living just a few feet from them.
When Sejer and his partner were called to the village to investigate the disappearance of a little girl, he was realistic enough to expect the worst. What he did not expect, however, was that the mystery of what happened to this child would lead him to the body of one of the little girl's teenage neighbors, Annie Holland, a beautiful and well-liked 15-year old athlete admired by everyone who knew her.
The delicate, almost protective, way that Annie's nude body was left at the scene of her murder convinced Sejer that sex had nothing to do with the reason that she was killed. He sensed that her killer was someone who knew her well and, through repeated conversations with the townspeople, he pushed and poked at them in a patient effort to piece together the last few months of Annie's life in a way that would make it easier to identify the person who had wanted her dead. In the process, Sejer hoped that he would either piece together enough of Annie's story to allow him to make an arrest or that the killer would do something foolish because of all the pressure that he was applying to the townspeople. It was only a question of which would happen first.
Don't Look Back offers numerous insights into contemporary Norwegian society and proves again what an excellent writer of psychological suspense Karin Fossum is. Fans of writers like Ruth Rendell and John Harvey would do themselves a favor by adding her Inspector Sejer series to their list of "must reads."
"They're going to blame themselves for not knowing.".......2007-04-02
An Australian friend of mine recommended Karin Fossum in her blog, and I was delighted to give one of her novels a try. I have heard of her (usually mentioned in the same breath as Henning Mankell) but have never actually read one of her books.
Fossum is generally called the Queen of Norwegian Crime Fiction. Difficult for me to judge, not having read much crime fiction from Norway. Don't Look Back is the second in the Inspector Sejer series, and the first that was published in translation.
Short review: It's a pretty great book, particularly if you like police procedurals.
Longer remarks: The comparison to Mankell is fair, but I found that I missed something of the feel for place and culture that I find in his books. It may be that this is just the focus of Don't Look Back, or it may be that this is not Fossum's focus. I definitely enjoyed it enough to give another one of her books a try.
Recommended for fans of smart police procedurals. Bonus points if you are a fan of some of the other Scandinavian detective writers-- they have that particular glum and straightforward tone in common.
"Dont Look Back".......2007-03-21
This novel, set in Norway, is not so much a mystery as an exploration by an experienced and compassionate policeman of the sad and curious things that darken and unravel human lives. The book suggests that the joys and beauties of life are balanced, or even over-balanced, by the things fate throws at us which crush us. We come to know the inhabitants of the little rural village where the major events of the plot take place very well, and we come to grieve for them. While the book is more character- than plot-driven, there are two twists--one in the beginning which surprises, and one at the end which chills--which are the equal of any.
I wasn't aware of the work of Ms. Fossum--reminiscent of the Martin Beck novels--but I now look forward eagerly to reading more.
Good Read.......2007-03-17
This was a good read and fairly fast moving. It caught my attention and kept it. I got it because it was set just outside Oslo and I thought it'd give me a taste of the culture, but there wasn't much to distinguish it from novels set in other places.
Children as the Victim.......2007-03-04
It was certainly well written and a page turner and all that. I would not, however, call this a police procedural. Not technically. It was more of a thriller than a who-done-it. And as one reviewer remarked, it was not too hard to figure out who the bad guy was. But I didn't think that was the point of the novel anyway.
The reason for the four stars was that I found the theme of dead or injured or threatened children to be a little too difficult to enjoy. One of the key events in the novel is the death of a two year old, and I just couldn't bear it. I think anyone out there who is a parent (and plenty who are not) would have the same reaction. Also the main victim is 15, and the teaser beginning seemed like a six year old was going to be the first victim. I couldn't handle it, even if it was well written.

Setting: Regency England
Sensuality: 7
A London lady who's skilled in the practice of mesmerism, Lavinia Lake has launched a new career as a private investigator, a startling and slightly scandalous occupation for a woman in Regency England. Strong-willed and independent, Lavinia isn't a typical society widow, a fact which alternately attracts and frustrates her enigmatic partner, Tobias March. Lavinia and Tobias have a prickly and passionate relationship, and Tobias is determined to protect her, while Lavinia is just as determined to be an equal partner in their business.
When the wife of mesmerist Dr. Howard Hudson is murdered and a rare antique bracelet known as the Blue Medusa disappears, the doctor seeks Lavinia's help. Tobias is reluctant to become involved in the matter but Lavinia feels compelled to help her late father's associate. Their attempt to uncover the murderer leads them to obscure antiquities dealers, secret organizations, amoral heirs, and ladies of the evening. And when a madman threatens Lavinia's life, only Tobias can hope to save her.
Lavinia Lake and Tobias March began their adventures in the novel Slightly Shady, and in this second installment, author Jayne Ann Krentz, writing under her Amanda Quick pseudonym, further develops the couple's romantic relationship while entangling them in a murder mystery enhanced by an exploration of ancient British jewelry. The author also introduces a charming secondary couple in the mix of eccentric and interesting cast members. Fans of historical romance and mystery will welcome this latest offering from bestselling author Krentz. --Lois Faye Dyer
Book Description
In this most entrancing tale of mystery and romance by the New York Times bestselling author AMANDA QUICK, lovers and partners-in-crime investigators Lavinia Lake and Tobias March continue their exciting newfound relationship, with its delicious mix of risky business, rising passion, and now--murder.
As if a head for business and a nose for trouble aren’t enough to distinguish fiercely independent Lavinia Lake from the other women of London’s fashionable Claremont Lane, there is one more feature to set her apart. Lavinia is also well versed in the practice of mesmerism, an extraordinary gift that far surpasses mere charm and physical appeal. Nobody knows this better than the usually coolheaded Tobias March, who seems to have fallen hopelessly under her spell. Fortunately for all, however, Lavinia uses her powers for good. And ever since a tragedy involving one of her subjects, she has even retired them in favor of her work with Lake and March, a joint venture providing “discreet private inquiries for individuals of quality.” Celeste Hudson, the stunningly beautiful young wife of a family friend and fellow mesmerist, would surely count herself among such individuals--were she still alive, that is. While mythology’s Medusa could turn men to stone, lovely Celeste was more accustomed to turning them to jelly. In fact, unbeknownst to her husband, Howard, the ambitious Celeste was planning to use her talents to forge a new future in Society--one that would not include him. Sadly, her plans were cut short when she was murdered. Only a gentleman’s cravat wound around her lovely neck remained for evidence--small compensation for the strange and priceless bracelet that may have been snatched from her wrist as she drew her last breath.
As a result, Lake and March are soon in Howard Hudson’s employ on the trail of the killer. But Tobias is convinced the dashing widower is more interested in tracking down the missing relic. If so, Howard is not alone. Any number of ruthless types are after the very same antiquity, whose centerpiece is an unusual blue cameo of inestimable value and supposed legendary powers--powers of immeasurable worth to anyone in Howard’s line of work.
Together, Lake and March undertake a tantalizing investigation that leads them from the glittering ballrooms of the ton to London’s seediest taverns to a mesmerist whose therapies include treating ladies suffering from “hysteria” is a a most unconventional method--and, not least of all, to the darkest reaches of men’s psyches. Along the way,
Don’t Look Back becomes a completely mesmerizing read as the irrepressible Lavinia and Tobias mix business with pleasure....

Andrew Vachss, a writer widely acclaimed for breathing new life and death into the crime genre, here presents a classic noir tale, relentlessly displaying and dissecting not guilt, but innocence.
"Vachss is a contemporary master."
THE ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION
"Vachss has updated the classic noir thriller, and set a new standard. The Getaway Man is taut and understated, inexorable in its deepening moral ambiguity. Eddie, the getaway man is a brilliant achievement, simple but not stupid, as steady on the wheel as Vachss' prose style, Eddie remains an honorable innocent in a world of slowly revealed depravity."

The further adventures of Lavinia and Tobias.......2007-06-21
The further adventures of Lavinia and Tobias (as started in Slightly Shady) ... Lavinia and Tobias, now lovers and business partners, are in search of a killer. Celeste, the wife of an old family friend of Lavnia's is murdered. To complicate matters, a priceless bracelet is also missing. Lavinia and Tobias figure that if they can find the bracelet, they will find the killer. Of course, they aren't the only ones searching for it. This was a charming, light read that made me chuckle. I especially like the lively interaction between Lavinia and Tobias.
A refreshing change from the ordinary romance........2007-06-10
I feel the need to put my two cents in here since I've seen a lot of negative reviews of this book. I'm a big fan of historical romance. This is the first Amanda/Jayne book I've read. (Why, oh WHY don't they say on the cover, "SECOND IN A SERIES?") Not having read the first book of the series, I was shocked to find the lead characters having an affair on page 4 of the book. Typically, the leads dislike each other, swear off romance, end up doing the nasty, get married because they are forced, and in the end, admit their love for one another. This novel was so refreshingly different. First of all, I'm not a fan of mysteries. So this was a nice "weaning" of the genre for me. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED, Tobias. (Who on earth names their romantic leads, "Tobias and Lavinia??") He was a really strong character with a haunting quality. Lavinia was a strong female lead, although a bit dull. I also liked the 2nd romance between her niece and his bro-in-law. I found this story exciting and funny with a few surprises that actually made me gasp out loud. I'm definately picking up the third in the series to see what happens, regardless of it's three star rating. I'm glad I read the book before I saw all of these kill-joy reviews! I hope you'll give Tobias and Livinia a chance. [But be sure to read the first book FIRST! Slightly Shady.]
Not her best.......2004-05-24
I like Amanda Quick, in fact I like her a lot, but I found this book disappointing. I think the problem for me was that it didn't introduce a new heroine and hero. Instead, it continued the story of Lavinia and Tobias from Slightly Shady. I like romances with a lot of plot, and this certainly has that, but I found it too easy to guess the villain. In a book where the hero and heroine are new to each other, I don't mind this too much - it's a romance, not a whodunnit, after all - but the combination of easy to guess villain and old lovers didn't work for me.
A change of pace........2004-05-19
I really took the lead characters in this book. The book was a fun read and a bit different than the usual Quick books.
Don't look back indeed!.......2004-03-05
I've never read her other novels except for "Slightly Shady" so I don't have any comparisons nor I can say that she's not capable of putting something that will spice up her novels. So anyway, the only thing that made me read this book is because I read "slightly shady" and when I start a story( a series for that matter) I intend to finish them.
But let me tell u, the ONLY JOY I got from reading this novel is when I got on the last page, not because it has a good ending(it was adequate) but because it's the last page and I'm FINALLY over it. I didn't really enjoy it, a lot of times I wanna put it down. It was so frustrating. I got the feeling of total detachment. Though I'll say, she is getting better on manuevering Tobias and Lavinia to invoke more humor into them. One more improvement is her attack on the mystery part. It's not hooking or anything, but still, it isn't easy to figure out...but it's not that hard either. If it's a good mystery ur looking for, I think u'll do better if u pick a Hardy Boys novel...

Exciting Mystery and Drama for Nancy Drew Fans.......2003-10-04
Everybody at Wilder University is ecstatic to hear that the star of the hit television series, The President's Daughter, Casey Fontaine, has enrolled in Wilder University. Even better than that, she is sharing a suite with everyone's favorite teen-sleuth, Nancy Drew, at Thayer Hall. But while Nancy is interviewing Casey for the Wilder Times, the universities newspaper, she finds out that Casey fears for her life. Bess, on the other hand, is facing a crisis of her own. She knows the deep, dark secret of a guy on campus, and realizes that it's time for her to admit it to everyone. And Nancy, who's relationship with Peter Goodwin, a pre-med student, is going great, yet she doesn't really want to admit it.
Fans of previous Nancy Drew mysteries will be surprised that opposed to doing detective work, Nancy and her closest friends, Bess, George, etc. are spending more time dealing with schoolwork, and romantic relationships. Still a good book, nonetheless, and an exciting mystery and drama for Nancy Drew fans.

not what I expected out of a great series.......1998-03-05
Kind of boring, if you ask me. I really was expecting some real romance and drama when I picked up this book, and couldn't be more disappointed with the way it ended up turning out.
could be better.......1998-02-10
When i picked up this book, I was expecting some real drama and action, but truthfully it was kind of boring. But good the way Peter and Nancy are in love with eachother, but won't admit it.

Don't Look Back .......2007-05-11
When Sean Beringer was a police officer, he arrested Donata Casale for aiding a mobster. Donata was working undercover and had decided to turn her lover/mobster in already. Now, Donata is a detective in the NYPD and Sean is a private investigator. Sean wants Donata to back off of a case he's investigating but Donata has no intention of doing so. Both Donata and Sean have a personal interest in the adult film making case that has underage girls being exploited. Both Sean's sister and Donata herself are personally involved.
The attraction they had for each other is too much to ignore now, but they need to stop the criminal before Donata loses more than just her career.
Don't Look Back is a sexy and romantic crime drama. Donata is both feminine and tough and Sean's good looks and take-charge attitude are very sexy. Don't Look Back is a story with strong emotions and an intriguing mystery.

fascinating police procedural romance .......2007-02-10
NYPD Detective Donata Casale learned a life lesson that men will use, abused and discard you before telling stories of their conquests; so after her reputations was guttered, she focused on her career. She has since overcome her infamous past as a loose woman and works hard to continue her career progression.
However, she is irate when a "reality adult films" porno case lands on her lap as she believes the brass wants to embarrass her by reminding everyone of her sordid past. Still she begins the investigation, but becomes even more upset when private investigator Sean Beringer demands in on her inquiries as he claims his sister was a victim of the producer. Donata and Sean have a shared past and a present attraction, neither of which she wants to deal with as her career comes first.
Donata and Sean turn this fascinating police procedural romance into a great tale. The action-packed story line grips the audience from the moment an upset Donata begins her case only to have Sean demand in; initially she assumed the investigation, but he wants much more. DON'T LOOK BACK superbly merges a heated love subplot with a deep official police investigation.

A Spectacular Finale to an Amazing Series!.......2004-10-03
You'll have to read the ending (or well near it) to find out my favorite part in this entire book. Hint: Miguel+Leah! These two were together the whole series with two breakups and problems with other side attractions (Shane and Sabrina). Now that they're starting college, Leah is miserable, but the ending of their time in this book changes all that =D
Jenna and Peter are about to start their senior year, with Jesse and Nicole as other seniors (although Jesse and Nicole aren't a couple). Jenna's birthday was mentioned early in this book, as was Melanie's. Peter is thrilled about adopting one of the Junior Explorers into his family, and about the fact that his brother David is marrying Jenna's sister Caitlin (Jenna also is excited).
Nicole is starting senior year and breaks up with Noel for being superficial and for flirting with Gail. There is one emotional moment with Gail and Nicole in this book, and it seems that Courtney (Nicole's best friend) and Nicole have someone else to see at CCHS next year...
Ben is in starry-eyed shock over Bernie, his new girlfriend. Even his parents like her! These two are good together.
And finally...Melanie and Jesse. First he liked her, then they got together, then she broke up with him...and then they fell in love with each other. Melanie has to deal with a rough driving lesson or many in here, while Jesse has to convince a rather nonconvincing person as a favor to a family member. They're starting Jesse's senior and Melanie's junior years together (and one of the funniest scenes in this series involves these two and is in this book!)
Overall, this book is amazing. Like the title says, a spectacular finale to an amazing series. I wish that Laura Peyton Roberts could have made more books like this, but with Miguel and Leah starting college (and Leah going away) I suppose this was a good place to stop. Fantastic finale!
really good.......2003-03-13
this is a good book.....the part with leah and miguel makes me a bit sad, i actually cried while i read it. since they're graduating, it was bringing out my own feelings about my graduation in june. but its still a good book, just cause a book makes u cry doesn't mean its bad. :-)
One of my fave in the series.......2002-07-08
I stumbled across these books by chance in my local library, and have learned to like them. This book is actually about and ending point in the Eight Prime. Leah is going away to college, and Miguel is too, only he'll be at the community college, so he won't be that far away. Finally Nicole starts to have a little faith in herself, but I think she still has some hurtles to overcome, and I think the next few books are going to be tough on her cause everyone knows that the only reason she is on the squad is because Melanie quit. But it's cool that her and Gail are finally starting to work out their problems, and are starting to become real good friends. I think Gail could totally help Nicole realize that it's not about looks. I love the part in this book where Nicole dumbs her man!! ( I think his name is Neil but I can't remember right now) He was mad hitting on Gail at Melanie's pool party, and Nicole just got sick of it cause he was using her anyway.
Melanie is my favorite character, because unlike most cheerleaders, she's not shallow and self asorbed. I wish she wouldn't have quit, cause she was the best, and she did deserve to be there instead of crybaby Nicole. Melanie is so sweet!! She's really nice, and so is Jesse. But hey, at least next year she'll be captain, then maybe Nicole will finally have a sweet caring friend who isn't brainless!!
Jesse is cool as ever too. He is working out his problems with his family, and helps out Brittany (Bee as he calls her) I think Brit is really cool, and hopefully will be mentioned in the later series.
The whole Jenna and Peter thing is as it always is. I always find their plot lines so boring and unrealistic, just plain revolting. Them and their do good ways are so freaking boring!!!! Peyton should have Jenna do something really bad in the upcoming books, and make a really cool twist in the plot, cause Jenna and Peter need some spice in their lives.
Oh well there you go. Can't wait for the next books, and I hope that Leah comes back for a visit real soon, cause her a Miguel are cool!!!
Great book!.......2001-12-20
Don't Look Back is another fantastic read by Laura Peyton Roberts and I highly recommend it to teenagers.
As this is the finale to Clearwater Crossing, we see the lives of the eight members of Eight Prime evolving for the better. Miguel is headed for a bright future in Clearwater University, and has succeeded in his dream of providing a good home for his mother and sister. Leah is filled with bittersweet feelings as she prepares to attend her aspired college while also preparing to leave the town, friends and family that she loves. Peter, as the leader of Eight Prime, strives to lead the group as best as he can, and also strives to provide a warm and loving home for Jason. Jenna is full of satisfaction with her life at this moment, as she continues singing in the band and takes on the new responsibility of being the oldest Conrad sister living at home. Melanie has finally found the contentment and peace that she so desperately yearned for in the beginning of the series. She finally experiences the love of her father, of Jesse, and has managed to fully overcome the grief of her mother's death to look at life anew. She decides to attend the bible-study class that Peter invited her to, showing that she is willing to explore the doubts she faces about Christianity.
While Melanie's life makes a turn for the better, Jesse feels a sense of belonging in his family at last. Nicole also manages to deal with her low self-esteem and her concern with physical appearance. Still in shock over the fact that he has a girlfriend, Ben is no longer as ashamed of himself as before.
As you read this book, you will be filled with mixed emotions. A sense of happiness will fill you as the members of Eight Prime seem to be leading meaningful lives, while a feeling of disappointment will be felt as you realize this is the last book in the series.
However, one negative aspect of the book is that the problems faced by the different characters at the beginning of the series seemed to be solved at too fast a pace. This made it seem rather unrealistic. I wish the series would continue so that readers can find out more about how Eight Prime continue with their lives and how they cope with future problems. Loose ends could be tied up too!
