5 out of 5 stars Just A Little Pricey...But Excellent.......2006-09-28

Mayesky balances theory, standards, and practicality in her book by organizing it like a house. She builds up the discipline from the ground (what is creative arts in early childhood) to the unique, but unnecessary, touches (applying early childhood creative arts for holidays).

It's expensive, but worth the price. Vocational schools that offer early child development training use this text.

5 out of 5 stars A Happy Customer.......2007-03-12

The book was the correct edition for the class I was taking and arrived as expected. No problems.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of creativity in children.......2006-11-05

I purchased the book as required reading for a college class. It was easy to read, nice layouts on each page, highlighted areas focused on interesting information. Each chapter ends with review questions which I also found helpful.

5 out of 5 stars excellent resource for teachers and to-be teachers!!.......2005-10-23

I am taking a class right now about the art expereinces of young children and this is the required text for the class. I must say the book is very impressing. It goes quite into detail about the vast benefits of art for young children and also the developmental stages and such. The great thing about this book is that in each chapter it has TONS of projects and ideas that you can implement in your classroom in the future. There are also lots of recipes for several types of playdough (edible, smelly, etc.) and other things. It's such a great resource...I'm not selling this book back! :-)
The book is also an easy read for those who hate reading textbooks. Half of each chapter is filled with ideas and such which probably are not neccessary when you read the chapter unless of course your teacher/professor will test you over them which mine does not. Anyways I highly reccommend the book to those in the early childhood art field right now. All the ideas in the book make it very worthwhile. I can't wait to graduate so I can use it in my own classroom! ^_^

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read! .......2005-08-29

I had to get Art & Creative Development for Young Children for a Early Childhood Class. It was easy and interesting book of knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful for teachers of young children!.......1998-11-03

This book guides early childhood educators through the concept of implementing early childhood art into their classrooms. It is very helpful in showing teachers how to focus on the "process" not the "product". There are also many wonderful ideas for special needs children, and for adding multicultural art experiences into the classroom.

4 out of 5 stars A good tool for beginning art teachers.......2000-12-05

As a beginning art educator I found this book to be extremely useful. It contains many tips for art room materials and practices that could only be learned through years of experience. Not only does Peggy Davison cover the very practical side of art education but also she explains many of the latest philosophies and strategies used in this area without the book becoming tedious reading. Any art educator, regular classroom teacher, or home-schooling parent would be wise to read this book if they are serious about the quality and efficiency of their art program. It is an easy and interesting read and one that will be referred to many times for information. This is a book I will keep handy in my classroom.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Drawing for the unartistic.......2001-08-15

I have maximum enthusiasm and minimal artistic abilities. I stripped a small wooden dresser and began repainting it for the nursery. Using this book, a pencil with a good eraser, and a lot of sunlight and patience, I created a remarkable young Tarzan and his ape mom! I was so impressed with myself, I sat back and stared at it for a long time. I've been drawing misfigured and misproportioned Disney characters for my neices and nephews for a long time. Finally, with the help of this book, I was able to make some characters that would be instantly recognizable by anyone, even if they're not entirely forgiving tiny tots!

5 out of 5 stars Lots and lots.......2001-08-13

You get a lot with this book. The book includes all the main characters: Tarzan- adult, Tarzan- baby, Tarzan - 5 year old, Kala, Kerchek, Terk, Tantor,Professor Porter, Jane, and Clayton as well as fauna and flora : butterfly; lovebirds; vines; bamboo etc. The characters are a little harder to draw than other the classic Disney characters. Its not fault of the book, since the characters in Tarzan are much more detailed and complex. The book is full of tips to help ease the difficulty - how to draw the eyes correctly; placement of eyebrows; placement and shape of wrinkle around the nose; etc. The book includes lots color pictures of Tarzan and his friends so a big Disney Tarzan fan won't be disappointed. Although I haven't seen the smaller size version, I would highly recommend this oversize book. I would think the detailing required for these characters would be harder to draw and master from a smaller image.

5 out of 5 stars "Ten Steps Will Take You Everywhere".......2000-04-04

This is an update of a classic controlled composition text. In any form, the basic teaching philosophy is sound and workable. This text is useful to all levels of ESL students, especially those who believe they are proficient writers! This text is an industry standard and should be on any ESL teacher's shelf. The exercises require precision in writing and slowly train the students to watch out for indentation, correct punctuation, capitalization, subject-verb agreement and the like. I use this text in my classes every day and recommend that all teachers of ESL writing and grammar do the same.
