Burnt Offerings is the seventh in Laurell K. Hamilton's genre-straddling Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series. Anita carries a gun and an attitude: "Questions are great, but only if you know the answers. If you ask questions and the answers surprise you, you look silly. Hard to be threatening when you look ill-informed."
As Burnt Offerings unfolds, Anita agrees to help track down a possible psychic firestarter. She's also policing the local werewolf pack, though she's split up with their alpha, Richard. Then Jean-Claude, the vampire Master of the City and her lover, needs her help to confront a visiting delegation of the vampires' ruling council. They wonder how he got the power to destroy a council member and believe him dangerous to the hierarchy.
This fast-paced, urban fantasy includes gore, hardboiled mystery and a romantic triangle. The vampires and werewolves are as three-dimensional as the human characters, allowing us to join Anita in wondering who the real monsters are and to understand how her increased personal involvement with them is alienating her from her human colleagues. --Nona Vero

Anita Blake, vampire hunter.......2007-10-01
I just recently bought my first Anita Blake, vampire hunter book, I absolutely love them!!!!! I ran out and bought the rest of the series and read them all back to back. They are absolutely wonderful.
Still going strong.........2007-09-26
Again Anita Blake brings it. The drama that unfolds with Jean-Claude and Richard keeps me enthralled. As the series goes on I am starting to realize that Anita Blake is changing. She is getting more and more wrapped up in the world of "monsters" I am still enjoying this series and recommend it to anyone!
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
Somebody has decided that vampires are toasty, or good to toast, or burn prettily. Anyway, vampire torchings are what Anita has to investigate in this book.
It is also becomes public that she is doing the head vamp of her city.
Because she bumped off their boss, Anita becomes responsible for the wereleopards in town, as if she doesn't have enough to do.
Yes, she is now a vampire hunter/necromancer/vampire servant/female werewolf leader/wereleopard queen.
She still has a fuzzy penguin, though.
WONDERFUL!!!.......2007-03-08
I think this book was great! I couldn't put it down however I am always upset with Anita for picking Jean Claude over Richard haha it seems I have gotten attatched to the characters because I seem to get mad at her whenever she doesnt make the choices i would! However this book is full of twists and new plot developements and LKH is a wonderful author as always KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!
Very possibly the best in a very good series so far........2006-12-06
As always, the Anita Blake series is a pleasure to read, largely due to the personality of the main character, which we get undiluted through a first-person narrative. Hamilton does a wonderful job of telling a continuing story, as each book builds on what has gone before while still containing one complete plot within itself. What really makes this book stand out as better than the previous six in the series (which were all quite good in their own right) is that one of the key concepts in this series -- the evolution of the character of Anita as she gains more power (or perhaps simply discovers powers that she had all along but wasn't aware of) and has to struggle against the old "power corrupts" truism, sometimes less successfully than others -- begins to be really obvious in this book, whereas it was only hinted at previously. Anita Blake has, by this time, thoroughly established her "hero" bonafides, and cannot be dismissed as less than that. Still, she begins to find herself in situations that have no good solution, but require a choice between evils, and no matter how much she dislikes compromising her principles she sometimes has to accept that. Being a strong and well-balanced character, she doesn't spend too much time being traumatized by having to make such choices, but she is aware that she is doing things that a short time ago she would have been appalled by, things that some of her non-supernatural friends would definitely disapprove of. It is interesting to see a character established as truly heroic making difficult choices in very difficult situations, making the best ones available, and still losing a little bit of humanity each time she has to accept a compromise of her basic principles. This concept is handled better in this series than I have ever seen before, and better in this book than in any of the previous books in this series, although they were necessary to set the stage for this one.

Ho Hum ..... .......2007-09-26
While the thoughts and "wisdom" provided are beautiful, they seem a bit cumbersome for every day referral. A quick one liner would be more suitable and more apt to remain with us throughout each day. These seem pretty wordy even though the thoughts are terrific and inspirational. The length makes it difficult to wrap your arms around them and keep them in your thoughts throughout the whole day. The pictures are lovely but the whole "feel" of the book is not inviting to and welcoming to pick up and open to any page .... soft cover might be more conducive.
Offerings: Buddhist Wisdom For Every Day.......2007-07-25
I have been looking for this book ever since seeing it at a friend's house. Turning the page is a wonderful way to start each day, full of inspiration and insight. I have put this on my gift list of must buys for all of my friends! I keep my copy in my art studio for all visitors to enjoy.
The human condition in word and image.......2007-06-27
A deeply thoughtful collection of wisdom. Beautiful photographs accompany each daily entry. All about the spiritual and transitory nature of the human condition. A spectacular collection of photos and guidelines. Totally unique. By far and away one of my favorite books.
Love this book! .......2007-03-15
I reference this book when I need an inspiring quote, or a reminder on how to be a better behaved human being. It is full of rich wisdom and beautiful pictures.
excellent.......2007-01-19
Such a beautiful book. Inspiring and the photos are fabulous. I bought this for my mother for Christmas and I would love to buy one for myself. Great to start your day with a meditation from this book.

Customer Reviews:
Best comic I've ever read.......2006-06-02
But to be fair - I haven't read many. However, that may just speak volumes for Cable & Deadpool, because even as a non-comic-fan I have been captivated by this series. It manages to integrate the incredulity of Marvel superheroes with the everyday world in a way that is both fun and thought-provoking. Through Deadpool, who is infamous for breaking the fourth wall, the writer takes pot-shots at many different aspects of society and culture - from the Olsen Twins to Fox News. It also raises a number of philosophical questions, such as whether or not human nature can ever be reconciled with the concept of world peace. The writing is brilliant, the artwork is excellent, and both the individual story arcs as well as the general dynamic between these two opposites makes for a fantastic read.
Witty As Ever.......2005-06-11
This book was amazing; an excellent combination of sarcasm, action, suspense, and drama. The storyline can be a bit confusing if you haven't already read the first book, "If Looks Could Kill", so I recommend reading that first. The artwork is superb, bringing the plot and dialogue to life. Deadpool is his usual sarcastic-insane-doesn't-know-when-to-shut-up mercenary self while Cable provides a more serious side to the story. With guest appearances from the X-men and the Silver Surfer, you just have to know that it doesn't get any better than this.

This remarkable book by Danielle and Olivier Föllmi, authors of 15 previous books on Buddhism, presents the wise words of a great master, philosopher, or poet for every day of the year, accompanied by Olivier's beautiful, moving photographs of Indian people and places. The effect is transformative, awakening our senses and preparing our souls to receive these simple yet profound teachings.

A treasure in both content and form, this inspirational book artfully conveys the essence of India. Thoughtful daily gems, if you are willing to think a little........2007-02-16
This is a lovely book, with breathtaking photos that accompany equally powerful daily written words of "wisdom." The book is great as a gift for a special person because it is smart, priced well, and very pretty, but it functions on a more meaningful level for those ready to receive its message. Personally, I think the writings are strong selections of some of the best ideas of the humanities, and I find the book inspiring each and every day.
Another daily treasure!.......2007-02-16
My wife and I have a special time each day where we sit together and read to each from our library of inspiration literature. We have two of the Follmi's books, this one, Wisdom, and Offerings. Our inspirational and meditative reading time is not complete until we read the passages for the day from each of these books. I especiall like their selections and the references to the photographs which are exquisitly beautiful. The Follmi's books will nourish your heart, mind, and soul.
Wisdom.......2006-07-10
A beautiful book that is inspirational in both its pictures and pearls of wisdom.
as wise as it is beautiful.......2006-03-04
The authors have chosen the quotations well and matched them with beautiful pictures. I am an American and have lived in India for over 22 years in an ashram. Many attempts to capture the spirit of India, especially by foreigners, seem to ring false, but this one combines a range of moods in the pictures and a range of depth in the written selections. It is a joy to read every day.
sheer wisdom.......2006-01-31
absolutely breathtaking pictures which capture the very essence of india and convey incredible peace. the thoughts are just what we need everyday to remind us of the "big picture" and look around, above and beyond ourselves to get a little wiser...

No one should be left to grieve alone
Even with the help of friends and family, grieving the death of a loved one can be a complex, sometimes overwhelming, process. The Mourning Handbook is written as a companion to those mourners in need of practical and emotional assistance during the trying times before and after the death of a loved one.
Having counseled thousands of people who have experienced loss, Helen Fitzgerald gives special attention to the complex emotions that can accompany especially traumatic situations, such as when a loved one has been murdered, when there have been multiple deaths, when a body has not been recovered, or when the mourner has been the inadvertent cause of death.
Designed to conform to the special needs of the bereaved, The Mourning Handbook is written and organized in an accessible style punctuated by real stories of people who have experienced every kind of loss. With many subchapters and cross references, it can be consulted for a specific problem or read at length.
Customer Reviews:
Very Comprehensive, Non Offensive, Extremely Useful.......2006-04-28
Helen's sub-title "The Most Comprehensive..." is spot on. It's very comprehensive and is by far one of the most useful handbooks I've read. And the inclusion "with All Aspects..." is also spot on. This books covers things you never really would think of or associate with in coping with the death of a loved one or just a death until you've been there and even then, there are things that I never thought about until I read this handbook that I'm grateful Helen wrote about so that I felt more comfortable and confident in dealing with those aspects.
Losing someone you love or someone whose life or death had a profound impact on your life often leaves you stunned. Frankly, the words meant to comfort given by friends and family only add insult to injury even though they're all well-meaning. It's my hope that for anyone who does know of someone coping with a loss, that instead of words, you present this book.
It's like an encyclopedia. You can flip through and read bits and pieces as you need. It's not intended to be read front to cover and most will never read every page as there are bound to be portions that won't apply. But Helen has covered a large area that death does touch upon and does so in a way that offers immediate help and provides you with more resources to help too. I really liked that there's an equal balance between providing information --a general acknowledgement and understanding being offered-- and resources. The book is helpful on its own merits, a really great tool when utilizing the references and other suggestions beyond the book, too.
Acknowledgements [...] puts this book into many of their sympathy gift baskets (which is where I first got mine) along with a nice selection of other helpful, soothing gifts. Check them out, too. The gifts are beautiful and meaningful as is Helen Fitzgeralds handbook.
a good resource.......2002-01-23
I found this book after losing my father a few weeks ago. I have found it to be a helpful resource and a comfort. The author uses simple language and short sections. The sections are divided so that a person can easily find the topic most needed without reading the enitre book. Highly recommended.
A tremendous comfort for those grieving.......2000-09-29
"The Mourning Handbook" is excellent and it hits the nail on the head when it comes to the pain of grief! This book has brought me a lot of comfort and relief as I dealt with the unexpected deaths of several loved ones in my life. This book also helped to not be so hard on myself as I went through my grieving process. This book is very educational in explaining many aspects of bereavement. It also talks a lot about what to expect when you are grieving, how to survive, how to cope, and also how to help other people who have lost loved ones. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has lost a loved one.
Think you're going crazy? This book will allay your fears........1998-07-02
I first bought this book for a British friend in Italy who thought she was going crazy because she was still subject to bouts of crying two months after her Mother's death. The book helped her tremendously. I bought my own copy when my Father died and found it as helpful as it appeared to be before death touched me personally.
I could go on for more than the maximum 1,000 words and still not finish describing this book. Suffice to say that its greatest strength is that it is totally non-judgmental. There are no "shoulds," no timetables, only the constant theme that the rollercoaster of emotions that is ruling your life right now is probably perfectly normal and temporary. Ms. Fitzgerald does offer benign guidelines to help the reader decide when things might be getting out of hand and require professional help, but with no pressure.
The book covers every eventuality for every type of death. The style is clear, the information easily found, the approach completely objective.

A Must have.......2007-05-21
This book has so much to offer both visually, and in motivational comments to inspire thought and creativity.
Beautiful Book!!!.......2007-04-19
This is a beautiful book in more than one way. Everything about it is pretty exceptional. From the photographs, to the wise sayings and it's powered me and my girfriend through a couple of hard days already. DEFINITE INVALUABLE PURCHASE!
Fantastic Book.......2007-01-15
I gave this book as a Christmas gift and my cousin is still calling to thank me. The Afrocentric nature of this book, the daily inspirational proverbs and stories are beyond wonderful.
This blew me away..........2006-12-29
This book is not only stunning and bold in its photos, which is why i bought it, but the quotes are truly an amazing collection. One could teach a mini-course off the quotes in this book. It far exceeded my expectations, and I had to go back to order another copy to keep for myself. Thought-provoking, not hokey at all. Diverse, not all "traditional" or all "warm + fuzzy." It's so beautiful it could go on your coffee table. But it's so rich in messages and imagery it can be the "daily affirmation" you check out each morning as you pour your coffee. Bottom line: Buy one to give and another for yourself.
Origins: African Wisdom for Every Day (Offerings for Humanity).......2006-11-10
This is an excellent book! It gives a person daily inspiration from the Motherland! It is the type of book that keeps on giving. It makes a thoughtful gift for people!

Buyer BEWARE, most 5 star comments are fake.......2007-02-15
Notice how all the five star reviewers are "Dr. XXXXX" from Beverly Hills / Stanford and the ONLY book they have reviewed is this one. Classic astroturf attempt.
This book is nothing special.
Excellent Presentation and Form!!!.......2006-09-02
This book is a perfectly thought out, well written, and precise account of the difficulties companies face as they become "public." I have numerous clients whom wish to take there companies public without the foresight of what is truly involved. I have recommended this book to numerous clients and scholars alike all of whom have enjoyed the book and its ease of readability. With so little information out there on IPO's this book is a must have.
literary piracy!!!.......2006-08-18
This book is a bad copy of The Ernst & Young Guide to the IPO Value Journey. Author didn't try to change words. Word for word!
Awful!
Simply Brilliant.......2006-07-21
I enjoyed reading every page of this book. The material covered, which is rather a difficult subject, is made easy to comprehend as "Initial Public Offerings" delivers a most informative, comprehensive and well thought out look into taking a company public. I, myself, have taken several companies public and wish I would have had this book as a reference at the time or event to present it to my client.
Kindest regards,
Dr. Walsh
EXTREMELY INSIGHTFUL.......2006-07-20
I really enjoyed this easy to read, comprehensive and insightful look into the IPO process. The book will continue to be an excellent source of reference for me as I take companies public each year. Additionally, it familiarizes my clients with the process their company will be going through to avoid any surprises on their part. "Initial Public Offerings" has truly provided a value-added service to both my colleagues and clients.
Sincerely,
Dr. Marlene Whitticare

Customer Reviews:
Starting to stray from the murder/mystery but fills info on her role as lead of the weres.......2007-04-24
Thus far, the plots haven't really nose-dived yet (as most folks said after Anita loses her chastity streak). If I read Burnt Offerings & Blue Moon out of sync I prob would have been disappointed but I didn't so I appreciated the fact that LKH is building the story of Anita's role as a leader of the werewolves & wereleopards. Ok, so LKH says over & over in previous books that Anita doesn't agree to her being beautiful yet all these folks are starting to fall 4 her left & right? I understand only Nathaniel falling 4 her like that since he's so frail anyway. As for Richard & Jean-Claude - at least they were her interests to begin with. But w/Damien starting to be infatuated w/her & all...it was cool that they realize he's her vampire servant but when he was trying to bed her & all...it was like a distraction from plot.
Burnt Offerings was the better of the two novels. It showed Anita's growing commitment to JC & at the same time her remorse for not choosing Richard. Blue Moon had too much catty ex-girlfriend/lover drama. And the whole love scene btwn her & Richard was so...superficial. I think it tried to be a bit more sentimental but it didn't really work for me. The morning after was nicer than the actual dirty deed. It was great when Anita starts to realize her other powers in Blue Moon though. The roasting vampires scene was pretty cool. I think every Anita novel so far has mentioned how she's Christian but her faith gets put to the ultimate test with the monster she fights in this story. Richard's brother & mother get held captive and there are torture scenes in here that will either make you squirm or put a twinkle in your eye as you're agreeing with what Anita's doing. Read & enjoy!
Bait and Switch Tactic.......2006-03-23
The only reason I gave this book three stars is because the books that it contains are actually some of my favorites. Having said that, however, I REALLY object to the publishers putting compilations of previously published books out under new titles without stamping "REISSUE OF PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED WORK"in HUGE red letters on the front. I've purchased too many of these thinking they were books that I hadn't yet read, only to find out that they are the same old books -- just a new cover and or title. FOUL PLAY!!!
Life and Death with Anita Blake after she picks Jean-Claude.......2005-05-01
The first eight novels in Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series are collected in three hardback volumes of which "Black Moon Inn" is the third. "Club Vampyre" had the first three novels ("Guilty Pleasures," "The Laughing Corpse, and "Circus of the Damned"), and "The Midnight Cafe" had the next three ("Lunatic Cafe," "Bloody Bones," and "Killing Dance"). That last one is the pivotal novel in the series because Anita finally chooses Jean-Claude, the Master Vampire of St. Louis over Richard, the werewolf middle-school teachers. But we now know that nothing is every settled in the world of Anita Blake when it comes to either her tangled love life or her growing supernatural powers. The stories collected in "Black Moon Inn" are a notch below most of the previous stories, but are still part of the premier horror series of our time.
I expected there to be a let down after Anita made her big choice in the previous novel but "Burnt Offerings," the seventh in the series definitely tries to top what has gone before, as several members of the Vampire Council arrive in St. Louis intending to deal harshly with Jean-Claude. Remember back when Anita killed Oliver, the ancient vampire who wanted the U.S. to strip away the rights given to vampires? Well, it seems Oliver was a member of the Council and Jean-Claude has refused to take his place as custom dictates. Plus, the triumvirate established between our heroine and her two paramours is also potentially threatening to the Council. Then there are a couple of vampires with mondo grudges against our little group. Meanwhile, there appears to be a pyrokinetic arsonist running around and the anti-Vampire groups are escalating their attacks.
This story continues Hamilton's interest in providing graphic sexual violence as she continues to up the horror ante. But her novels continue to end the same way, with Anita discovering she is more powerful than she or anybody else thought and turning the tables on the bad monsters at the last minute. Each time this trick gets turned it becomes less and less impressive, and if Jean-Claude or Richard or someone else were to save the day once it would not be a bad thing since it would break what is becoming the standard formula of these novels. The political intrigues of the Vampire Council are quite interesting, and the powers of the Traveler and the Master of Beasts suggests bigger and badder vamps yet to be met. Or maybe, horror or horrors, Anita's dad will show up (he is not at all happy about Jean-Claude).
In "Blue Moon," the eighth volume, Anita drops everything to rush to Tennessee where Richard has been arrested for attempted rape. Obviously somebody is trying to frame Richard, who was down studying Lesser Smokey Mountain Trolls to finish up his M.A. degree in biology. "Blue Moon" focuses on Anita as the lupa of the Thronnus Roke Clan lukoi and Nimir-ra of the pard, although her being a necromancer, animator, vampire hunter and human servant all come into play. Her ability, and willingness, to call the munin becomes crucial. Hamilton continues to expand the roster of monsters and their ilk with not only a sorcerer and a psychic this time around, but also a full-fledged demon. The final fight between good and evil in "Blue Moon" is rather anticlimactic, since the most important development in the book happens in the aftermath of the battle.
I think that this was an excellent move on Hamilton's part, because the constant attempts to top the confrontation with evil from the previous novel ends up tampering with the credibility of the story being told. This novel is about Anita's relationships, not with Richard and Jean-Claude, but rather with the supporting cast of Jason, Nathaniel, Zane, Jamil, Cherry, Asher and Damian. "Blue Moon" is not a great novel in the series, but it is certainly above average and whets our appetites for the next adventure. One thing that is absolutely clear now is that the Anita/Richard/Jean-Claude triumvirate is never, ever going to be over. Final warning: while the level of graphic violence has abated a wee bit, the sexuality of these novels escalates greatly from this point on in the series (to the disappointment of many fans). These are novels for adults and I pity the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans that stumble upon this series, misled by the "Vampire Hunter" title which is more of a marketing ploy that an accurate description of our heroine.

IPO - The Greatest Legal Creation of Wealth ..........2000-06-27
I first decided to check out this book after having read Kiyosaki's Rich Dad's Guide to Investing. In his book, Kiyosaki touched on being the Ultimate Investor i.e. the selling investor, the kind of investor who puts together businesses that the public crave for and would pay a premium for. The IPO is the Holy Grail for those want to make it big. In the words of a venture capitalist, the IPO vehicle is "The Greatest Legal Creation of Wealth in the History of the Planet".
Arkebauer's "Going Public" is an excellent primer for those just starting out in understanding IPOs. Using plain language and cutting out the gobbledygook, Arkebauer takes the reader through the different stages of an IPO - from assessing if an IPO is the way to go, to assembling the IPO team, the pre-IPO steps, the IPO process itself, and the post-IPO steps. In this edition, Arkebauer also introduces the latest method of raising capital via Internet Direct Public Offerings.
I found this book to be thorough and detailed enough to satisfy even those who are CEOs and who may need a quick crash course in IPOs. One very important lesson I learnt from this book is the need for any entrepreneur aspiring for IPO, to get prepared and started from day one. Going public is an extremely complicated and tedious process. The IPO process can be made easier if the aspiring entrepreneur plans early.
For those interested in reading further on IPOs, I recommend 2 other books - "The Complete Going Public Handbook: Everything You Need to Know to Turn a Private Enterprise into a Publicly Traded Company" by Frederick Lipman, and "The Ernst & Young Guide to the IPO Value Journey" by Stephen Blowers et al.
An exceptionally useful and detailed book........1999-08-13
This is the perfect starting book for young men and women thinking about getting involved with startups, even if as employees. An ideal book for use in the classroom. Going Public is not superficial; it probes deeply into SEC rules and regulations and explains in considerable detail the financial quagmire of the first few years. Probably the best text on the subject.

I had the privilege of reviewing this book in manuscript stage for the publisher, and was extremely impressed. This comprehensive guide to public offerings in the electronic era delivers on the promise of its title--and in clear, engaging style. It takes a practical, step-by-step approach to an extremely complex area. It's a must for any firm considering an IPO!
Book Description
A cradle of Nobel Prize winners and a font of ancient wisdom, Latin America provides a wealth of sublime source material for the husband-and-wife creative team of Danielle and Olivier Föllmi. In the latest installment in their Offerings for Humanity series, the authors draw nuggets of written wisdom from the Andean plains to the Mexican desert. Set against the stunning visual backdrop of 365 photographs, taken all across the continent by Olivier, these quotations come from both world-renowned Latin American writers (including Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz, and Carlos Fuentes) and traditional Indian spiritual teachings, demonstrating the subtle interweaving of ancestral belief and contemporary thought in one of the world's most intellectually fertile regions.
Like their previous explorations of Buddhist, Indian, and African wisdom, this new volume will surprise, enlighten, and nourish the soul.
Customer Reviews:
Such beauty........2007-01-15
Danielle and Olivier Follmi have created several books that I absolutely love. With wonderful photographs and thoughtful quotes from a variety of thinkers on every page, the Follmis reveal the beauty and genius of humanity that we sometimes lose sight of, or that so much of the media obscures. I already owned "OFFERINGS: Buddhist Wisdom for Every Day," "WISDOM: Thoughts from Indian Masters," and "ORIGINS: African Wisdom for Every Day." Now with "REVELATIONS: Latin American Wisdom for Every Day," the Follmis once again have created an extraordinary compilation of images and ideas that I will learn from and delight in for the rest of my life. They've also provided another gift idea for the next round of birthdays or other occasions, as I so enjoy passing these books along to others.
I hope people in the media start giving these photographers the publicity they deserve. Maybe Oprah Winfrey will consider them for her book club, or other Amazon customers will review these treasures.
I don't have the words to do these books justice; but I feel like if they find their way to the classrooms, coffee tables and nightstands of more people, the world would be a more joyful, respectful and insightful place.
"REVELATIONS" has quotes from a variety of sources including Octavio Paz, Violeta Parra, Paulo Coelho, Pablo Neruda, the Popol Vuh, and various oral traditions. One of the quotes from Carlos Fuentes is "If we do not recognize our humanity in others, we shall not recognize it in ourselves." That's what "REVELATIONS" and the Follmi's other books do so masterfully - they help us to recognize our common humanity, and to remember the holy parts of our nature.
I can't imagine a greater gift we can share with each other.
