4 out of 5 stars Short Course for Nikon D80.......2007-08-12

Thought it was very helpful and informative. didn't like that it was black and white print. For a great color experience I had to sit in front of the computer to watch the CD, which presents great examples of concepts. Wish they would make the book in color print too.

5 out of 5 stars Great little Book.......2007-08-08

Just got the book today, have not yet put it down.
The cd that come's with this book is great, full of little and useful bits that will help you understand the D80 alot more.

1 out of 5 stars One point never mentioned........2007-07-25

While other reviews point the quality of the manual, no one has mentioned
that the eBook content ( the so called animations ) needs a Internet connection.
Further having such a connection, it does not guarantee that the link
will always be there. So I was disappointed that the complete work was not
on the CD. Also saying that the contents are searchable, etc..
well, that is standard operation with any PDF document. I have since sold it.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful and informative.......2007-07-13

As before for other cameras, Mr. Curtin accomplished in helping users for maximizing the use a new camera. I purchased other books for my other cameras and found all are excellent. I like the wire ring binding and the style of his writing. With the accompanying DVD, users can benefit from the short scripts on many interesting topics.

3 out of 5 stars Useful source but needs an index.......2007-06-28

Like several other reviewers I was initially disappointed in the book and in its format. However, after a closer look I discovered tons of useful information.

The biggest disadvantage of the book is the lack of a detailed index at the end. The book's aim is to clarify and advise. For that purpose an index is a must. Many items are discussed in several places in the book. True, most often there is a page number referral to other pages dealing with the same topic. Still, an index is the best way to quickly find out the desired information. I strongly recommend that the next edition of the book should include a detailed index.

3 out of 5 stars The Best features of the Product.......2007-09-16

The Book of Learning is a good one except that I expected more gear to the advance users. It is great for anyone who wants to know or learn the best features of the Cannon 30D.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST if you buy a Canon 30D.......2007-08-24

This book is the best complement for the Manual included with the camera. If you are considering the EOS 30D, and you are not an experienced photographer, this course becomes a MUST-BUY in order to take advantage of all features of your new camera.

4 out of 5 stars decent tutorial for EOS.......2007-07-16

I have not had a Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera for 20 years so this was a good refresher. The material related to digital photography was especially useful for an old codger like myself

4 out of 5 stars Buy the CD not the book !!!.......2007-02-24

As other reviewers have said, this is for the book and the CD which only has a readme and the an Acrobat File of the book. The PDF is beautiful and well illustrated compared the the book which is printed in black and white and is really only good as a field reference. I would have preferred going to the authors website and just buying the CD instead of the book and printing it out myself in color.

No complaints about the contents, I just disappointed in the quality of the black and white book which was just printed off an a laser printer and spiral bound.

5 out of 5 stars A must have book for the 30D owner.......2007-01-10

One of the best books I ever read - perfectly tailored towards the Canon 30D. I have my 30D a year now, use it on a regular basis and still found some information I was not aware of. Go and get it!

Only thing I have to criticize: Book is printed in black and white not in color - kind of defeats the purpose. So I printed the color version of the book from the DVD and I LOVE it!

Book Description

This easy-to-use, inexpensive book introduces beginning picture takers and makers to the fundamentals of photography and suggests ways in which they might create photographs that have meaning. Oriented toward traditional black and white photography, the book also explores digital techniques and web photography resources, equipment, cameras and camera accessories, the exposure and development of film, and the making and finishing of prints. All aspects of the process are explained and illustrated clearly in two-page spreads, each of which addresses a self-contained topic. For people who don't know anything about photography and would like to learn, and for those who want to make better pictures than they already do.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book, could use more focus.......2007-07-27

A fine intro primer on photographer, but I felt always on the edges of getting good information. Much better at technical stuff, skimps on the art of photography.

5 out of 5 stars Very well done.......2007-06-02

I've found this book to be the most helpful both for novices and learning to take the more professional shots.

Detailed information, definitions and technical terms are not so overwhelming that it would dissuade the average novice, but at the same time, they are explained well enough to carry on a conversation at your local camera store.

Now I just have to sit down and read the whole thing and I will be truly enlightened, or at least exposed at the proper F-stop.

5 out of 5 stars Nikon D200 Short Course.......2007-05-06

I find this a well organized and useful handbook for a new user of a D200.

I have several books on the D200 and still keep returning to this one from time to time, because it is easy to read and to find information.

I am pleased to have added it to my library.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money .......2006-10-18

Anyone who owns a Nikon D200 most likley has a basic understanding of photography.. This book goes into basic photography using the D200. Information you can easily find if you just read the manual.. The CD does make it more convient but your money would be better spent on something else.

5 out of 5 stars Dennis does it again - a great instructional manual.......2006-08-11

Dennis's books have been excellent for each of the cameras I have used. This one for the D200 is no exception. This camera is feature-rich, and this book/ebook covers the bases. The color ebook looks sharp and includes animations that demonstrate some of the broader concepts in photography. The printed manual, while black and white, allows you to read through the pages in a spiralbound volume that lies flat. What makes these manuals not only terrific guides to the specific cameras, is also the general knowledge imparted on basic photography skills throughout the book - "Here's how to use the feature" on the one hand and "This is why" on the other.

4 out of 5 stars good but coulod be better.......2006-08-05

The black and white spiral bound paper manual that came with my purchase was just a print out of the manual that is on CD. The information on the CD is worth the price but the package would be better if it were just the CD thus allowing me to print out the pages I want. With just the CD the price could be lowered and make it an even better deal. The book is really really good with detailed information on the camera and also includes a great deal of general digital photography information that will help in understanding the camera and it's use.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, difficult-to-find coverage.......2007-07-26

Dennis Curtin has produced a remarkable series of books about photography. As a user new to the Canon EOS 20D, I'm particularly pleased to have found this volume. Canon has already introduced a newer model, and it's become difficult to find a manual specifically about the 20D.

This volume is a well-produced Print-On-Demand book, printed in black-and-white. It serves well as a handy reference, but it also contains a CD-ROM in the back which contains the e-book version in full color, an essential tool when so many of the illustrations are color photographs. I'm glad to have both versions.

From this book, one learns not only the camera-specific information about various camera controls and settings, but one picks up a lot of information about picture-taking.

Highly recommended -- and there's really little else still available on this camera model.

5 out of 5 stars Canon 10D Guide.......2006-12-13

This is a very clean and concise book with spirol binding. Well worth the money.

1 out of 5 stars Spend the money somewhere else - Magic Lantern for example.......2006-10-08

I bought this, looking for specific "how-to" examples of how to get the very best out of the Canon 20D. I was disappointed.

The information in this booklet - sorry, spiral binding doesn't count as a real book - is too generic (a page on cleaning lenses? Puleez!) and clearly is oriented towards the beginning photographer (a page on where color comes from, and another on the direction of light, and yet another on quality of light). I'd have to estimate that about half the booklet applies as readily to a $10 disposable camera as it does the 20D.

As another reviewer stated, the information to be gleaned here isn't bad - it's just that for $34 in such a competitive market, one expects a book jam packed with insights specific to the 20D and reproduced better than what a previous reviewer accurately describes as a Kinko's B&W photcopy-grade spiral-bound special. Instead of being impressed with the depth of technical knowledge being imparted, each turn of a page is a reminder of the poor reproduction quality, further flawed by the lack of an index.

Effectively, what you are buying is the CD which you can use to print the 130 pages in color. Maybe it is just me, but $34 so you can print your own book seems a bit steep.

Yes, there is definitely useful information here. But there are LOTS of photography books out there, and several specific to the 20D - you can and should be able to get a better one than this.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book.......2006-07-09

Yes, this book does repeat much of what can be found in the manual that comes with the camera, but it's well done. I especially like the discussion about accessories that were appropriate for the camera, the lenses, flash units, etc.

I've only just purchased a Canon EOS-20D, so there is much I don't know. I found this book to be very helpful. The manual lives in the camera bag, and this book lives by my favorite chair. I've learned quite a bit about my new camera in perusing this book along with the manual.

I think it's worth the price. As far as it having no color pictures, that didn't bother me. It comes with a CD that does.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ITEM!.......2006-03-25

If you are new to digital or just need additional info, this is a WONDERFUL Book!!! I highly recommend it!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very good book.......2007-09-10

A very good book that taught me a lot about not only the Powershot S3 IS but also about digital photography. Put in a very systematic way and an easy to grasp way. I love the CD and their animation web site although a bit slow.
I recommend this book highly because the original user guide only explains the functions of each option. This book however explains why and what to do with that function.

4 out of 5 stars a valuable purchase.......2007-08-31

I recently bought this item despite the negative reviews posted previously by two other purchasers. I think these two reviews were not fair to the book. First, it is not the case that the book discusses the RAW format, and second, an eBook was not included with my camera when I purchased it. In fact, both the book and the CD that come with the order are valuable and some of us (still) prefer books. In this case you can have your cake and eat it too. The book covers many key aspects of the features of the Canon 3S IS camera and I think that unless you enjoy reading the small manual that came with the camera, this book will definitely be an asset to you and will facilitate your learning how to use the camera and take better pictures. The illustrations are good and the text is clearly written.

So, if you own a Canon Powershot 3S IS I think you will NOT be disappointed by this book and CD. Yes, it is not cheap, true, but the CD alone is 20 dollars from their web site. The book is nicely done.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2007-04-07

I was a bit hesitant to buy this book after reading the first review. There is no mention of RAW format in the book so that's good at least.

Otherwise, if you already own this camera (Canon PowerShot S3 IS) you most likely already have the eBook (I realized this after the fact as I thought it was a driver CD) and you can save yourself about $15 by buying the book alone if you really want it in print (Google the title, you'll find it).

Also, this book isn't in color - the eBook is. So why buy the book? For $40 I feel hugely disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Camera doesn't have RAW.......2007-02-13

Product description indicates the S3 has RAW capture. It does not. Makes you question how accurate the rest of the description is, so I wouldn't consider paying $ , which sounds too high anyway;.

This is a well organized if a bit terse book. It comes with a CD that has a lot of useful illustrations and animations. The CD requires internet access and each example has its own copyright and acknowledgment splash scene that slows the access a bit.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped for........2005-12-07

I bought this book after getting my rebel xt and couldn't wait for it to arrive. The user manual that came with the camera didn't help at all and I was looking forward to getting a book that could help get me started in the right direction.

Well, it took over 6 weeks for the book to arrive and when it did I found it to be nothing but a glorifed user manual. Very disappointing.

I have had better luck from Popular Photography magazine and learning from books written by professionals like John Shaw and Art Wolfe.

This book wasn't worth the price and wait for it to arrive.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE BOOK.......2005-11-19

If you are just getting started, frustrated trying to understand canon's version, this is the book for you! It is so easy to understand, the terminology, the highlighted boxes for quick reference, pictures are large, it is an easy to follow guide. If you don't understand they have a picture to show you. I love the spiral, the paper is a thicker quality. Yes, it is in black and white, so what! Everything is easily spelled out for you. If you don't have it, get it, the cost should not be a consideration, when you think about what you spent for the camera:) Best book I have bought lately

3 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2005-08-20

I must disagree with most of the negative reviews of this book. The book is exactly what it claims to be. A short course for the Canon EOS Digital Rebel. It presents it's material as such. . . starting from knowing little or nothing about the camera or digital photography. The pictures in the book are presented in black and white and that seems to be the areas most people have a problem with. I went through the book and then reviewed the material on the CD(which has good color photos) which enhanced the book. I enjoyed it throughly and benefited from it but then I'm only a beginner in digital photography. It is not meant to be an "Advanced Course" and never claims to be. It takes little for granted about what a person knows about photography and builds a good foundation. I have read several other digital photography books and I always ended up with more questions than answers. . . . I now feel comfortable in using my camera . . . which is what I bought the book for. I still have a lot to learn but the book never promised I'd know it all when I finished. . .

3 out of 5 stars Free Learning center for Digital Rebel.......2004-12-17

Here is a link from the Canon web site to the Canon digital learning center for the Digital Rebel (300E). It contains basic info about this camera. I found it helpful. Best of all, its free!

4 out of 5 stars Canon Digital Rebel Short Course.......2004-08-02

Respectfully, I disagree with the negative reviews on this book. It probably is not a great book for the advanced photographer, but as an amateur trying to make the best use of a very versatile new camera, I found the book helpful. It is in 81/2 by 11 format, so the print and format are larger and easier to read than the manual. While it may not contain much information about the camera that is not in the manual (the manual is pretty good), it presents the information in a more helpful way. The cross-referencing within the book is also helpful (which the manual does not have). Moreover, I found the book helpful in describing the reasons why and situations in which I might find the various features the Digital Rebel has to be useful. For example, this book explains why the Av (Aperture-priority) would be useful and why types of situations would make it beneficial. The manual does a fine job of explaining the feature, but does not give examples of how it may be useful. I also found the complaint about the spiral binding of the book misplaced. I like the spiral binding because it allows me to lay the book flat and fold it over when I am reading it. While I agree that the book is probably somewhat overpriced, I found a lower price for the book on Amazon. I found the book valuable (remember, I am just a beginninng photographer) in helping me learn more about digital photography and the Canon Digital Rebel at the same time.

4 out of 5 stars Good, basic photography book, though dated.......2006-07-21

I've been using SLR's & digital cameras since early high school, including use for some publication work. This book gives good, basic information, and would be good for a novice just learning to use a film-type camera. My copy is dated 1979, so it includes nothing about digital photography. The other reviewer referred to Chapter 9 as being nothing more than verse or poetry. That is somewhat puzzling as my copy only has 7 chapters. Also, unless there have been more current editions, this book is too dated to ever be used as a textbook for any current college course. However, if you are just looking for a basic reference on basic, film-type photography, or are a new hobbyist with a film camera, this book is certainly adequate, and one could do worse.

1 out of 5 stars Complete tripe........2004-07-15

If you are talking a College level course that utilises this book as the main text, I truly pity you. You will learn more by simple self research via the internet and using your camera over the duration of the course than this book could ever teach you. By the final chapter you are left banging your head into your desk wondering why anyone would ever choose this offal as a required textbook. Don't believe me? Read Chapter 9 and notice that the vast majority of the text is simple poetic musings followed by references back to previous chapters, as the authors were too bloody lazy to expand upon their meager ideas. Pathetic.
