4 out of 5 stars Useful introductory overview.......2007-06-14

This book is useful as a jumping-off point for using Photoshop to create textures, and covers most of the basic topics that someone new to both Photoshop and texturing would need to know. However, you'll need to search for additional resources to complete the journey that this book starts you on, since it's a pretty basic overview with a few confidence-building exercises that give you a taste of the possibilities.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. Really!.......2007-05-26

Unlike the rewiever who gave this book 1 star, I am giving 5. Because unlike him, I find this full-color book very well written and very useful. It goes beyond basic texture creation tutorials. The first half of the book explains theory behind good textures and texture creation as well as ways to take pictures for your own textures. It gives lot of examples to demonstrate various points. The second half of the book is the tutorial part. The tutorials are detailed and easy to follow. The only negative thing I find about this book is, that the tutorials give you exact values for everything without explaining why these values were actually chosen. However, it is up to the user to make his/her own tweeking and see, how changing these values effect the final result. Also, I would like to see how these textures are applied to a specific UV layout, which the book does not discuss. But then again, the book is about creating textures, not applying them to your model, so I do not hold it against it. After all, the textures that are created in the tutorials are nicely done and you certainly can find a good use for any of them. So, five stars it is.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2007-05-24

Utterly worthless book that provides horrid explanations. Really not worth the money, or even a look, it's just a low quality excuse for a book with most of it's "tutorials" being available free on the internet.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-02-07

Very well written and beautifully illustrated. One of the best Photoshop books I've ever seen.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best i have so far.......2007-02-06

After looking though the first set of tuts for making the textures. It pretty simply. There were not miss prints or typos, i never got lost while doin any of them and even more so i put in my own style while following these steps.

5 out of 5 stars Digital Collage and Painting: Using Photoshop and Painter to Create Fine Art.......2006-11-25

This book was like reading a great novel, I couldn't put it down! The inspiration was excellent. The incorrect assumption of some that "digital" means "computer generated" is debunked in this excellent work which has lots of beautiful examples of many kinds of digital art (not just collage). There are lots of step by step tutorials that are helpful and tips for using the tools of PS and Painter to their best advantage.

It is not a beginners book however as Bloom assumes that the reader is familiar with PS and Painter. Still this might be the work that makes one REALLY want to do the work needed to become proficient in these programs.

Loved it more than any other work on this subject and I already have a shelf full!!!

3 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2006-11-11

Ok, firstly if you want a hands-on plenty of action book stay away from this one. Sure you get to see how other artist have created their work but if you read carefully there are gaps between getting from one stage to the next in some cases. Also a MAJOR dissapointment is you get no images to play with so you can attempt to emulate what the artist is doing as you read. Using the same techniques on different images can obviously give you totally different results.

There is a small hands-on section (26 pages) at the back where you have to download the images to work with. Come on guys how about a CD..? You also have to download a total of 49 files off the web if you want all of them AND they are all largish TIFFS instead of jpgs so be prepared for a long download session.

Basically if you want to be a digital vouyer and have a perve at how others do it without having fun yourself buy this book. If you want to get down and dirty and have heaps of fun then look elswhere. I have read many good PS and Painter books but for me this is not one of them. I might add I am a very experienced PS user and more than a fair Painter user and while the author certainly knows her stuff the book for me is a major letdown and certainly not for a new user looking for a good start to take them to an intermediate level.

5 out of 5 stars Bridging the Digital Disciplines.......2006-10-07

Artists create by combining and extracting elements, often employing diverse techniques, to express ideas. Sue Bloom's new book brings her background as a teacher and digital artist and painter to the reader by showing how different artistic methods can be combined to create a work richer than any single medium alone could provide. She does this, not just by describing her own work, but by inviting 21 other major digital artists to share their eyes and techniques. Of course, she provides some excellent chapters on the "basics" of digital creation in Photoshop and Painter, but her book's unique strength, I think, lies in going beyond all of the usual "How to" books. It is a book which bridges these different digital disciplines. It covers collage and panorama creation, along with artistic tools in Photoshop and Painter while at the same time has a large section on "Artistic Considerations" (which includes "Experimentation" ideas). Bloom's first sentence begins with the question: "Where does that kernel of inspiration come from?" She brings us many tools to use. Along the way, she offers inspiring and thoughtful quotations from artists throughout history. I took great comfort from her quote from Emerson that "Every artist was first an amateur." An inspiring and truly unique book. BRAVO.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for learning new techniques and skills.......2006-08-26

This is a great book for the curious and creative artist who wants to use Photoshop and Painter as their tools for expression. The author provides plenty of information, step-by-step instructions and illustrations to help the reader go through the process and create his/her images. The book is not an introduction to basic Photoshop or Painter. The book is for the artist who wants to improve his techniques and learn new skills using these programs. You can practice, and apply the new skills and I'm sure that you will notice immediately the improvement on your technical skills.

The chapters on Collage are excellent and the author provides a step-by-step guide in the creative process of a diversity of images. She inspires you to use the newly learned techniques to create stunning collages. The chapter devoted to creating panoramic images is superb. You will enjoy this chapter because you can use any digital camera to create great panoramas and you don't need to invest in expensive equipment.

You will love the chapter on filters; you can practice and create new versions of some of your favorite old images. The chapter on Essential Photoshop and Painter techniques is a must for everyone who wants to be proficient with the tools of both programs. This chapter has a step-by-step approach to the method and you'll have plenty of illustrations and instructions to learn how to master the tools. The book provides five projects for you to practice some of your newly acquired skills. I'm sure that this book will help you find inspiration and will motivate you to go out and create great images with this wonderful programs. This book is a must in the library of every photographer and artists who uses digital technology.

Book Description

Create an Oasis describes how to quickly and easily choose, build, and use a simple greywater system. Some can be completed in an afternoon for under $30.

It also provides complete instructions for more complex installations, how to deal with freezing, flooding, drought, failing septics, low perk soil, non-industrialized world conditions, coordinating a team of professionals to get optimum results on high-end projects, and "radical plumbing" that uses 90% less resources.

5 out of 5 stars THE TIME IS NOW.......2007-08-14

Read this book and get over your phobia of graywater use. The time is now for people in this country to reconsider using used water. It makes so much sense. I'm glad Texas is one of the few states which realizes the necessity of reusing water. More states should follow the lead of Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. This book was so very helpful to me in planning my graywater oasis.

5 out of 5 stars Simply The bible for greywater and blackwater.......2007-08-07

I live off grid in Spain and need to sort out my grey water disposal. Your choices of reading material are slim ! Art and his team have the cash is a factor, Im willing to learn, peoples DIY market to themselves and they dont disappoint. Practical, common sense approach, most angles covered for all type of geography and with an eye for ones budget . I have read it a couple of times and getting ready to start implimenting, its not rocket science but hes seen the mistakes and documented the good the bad and the ugly. So we dont have to. Its almost Hobsons choice, but when Hobson aka Art is the world guru on this subject thankyour self he could write as well

Plenty of good info and real world applications. Saved me from making a couple critical errors.

5 out of 5 stars No Grey Area Here.......2007-02-09

Luwig provides page after page of valuable information. Anyone wanting to reuse greywater needs to buy this book. Ludwig's branched drain systems is simple, affordable, and highly effective at using greywater in the landscape, but you can make many mistakes if you don't heed the master's advice. I have installed several systems based on Ludwig's work, and I shutter to think what would have happened if I had not read his books! In addition, his writing style makes for an enjoyable reading experience even though some of the material is, by necessity, technical.

5 out of 5 stars The Cat's Pajamas.......2006-11-10

Walk, no - run to your nearest locally-owned bookstore and order this little puppy. Art & co. are North America's foremost experts on greywater use, and they've been writing this book for 15 years. There are lots of hard-earned lessons embedded in these pages. The one thing I wish there were more of is practical advice for dealing with codes & officials in heavily regulated (e.g. suburban) environments.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to Mathcad; a bit light on "engineering" content.......2007-07-19

As others have commented, the book is an excellent introduction to Mathcad, but is quite "light" on real-world worked engineering examples.

First-time Mathcad users will find it to be an extremely useful user's manual, and even experienced users will appreciate the structured approach, and will find the odd "gem" that they have never appreciated before.

My only critique is that there is very little in the way of practical worked examples of actual engineering analysis and design problems. You will need to look elsewhere if you are seeking "drag and drop" worksheets of stress analysis etc.

4 out of 5 stars Using Mathcad to Create and organize your Engineering Calculations.......2007-06-04

Very good book...I think you learn to use and programming Mathcad. I indeed would recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars elementary.......2007-05-25

This book provides the reader with access to many of the basic functions of mathcad. The author does this carefully and in some detail. But the book does not go far enough. There is nothing about differential equation solvers, nothing about random numbers, nothing about reading or writing data to or from a file and in fact nothing about engineering. What it is is a nice introduction to mathcad.

3 out of 5 stars very useful for learning Mathcad.......2007-02-12

this is a very useful book for learning mathcad. the users of previous versions of mathcad will find some tricks for the new version (mathcad 13), but the title seems to much ambitious. the accompanying CD is a very good complement that really help, mainly thanks to the working mathcad installer. its license is limited to 4 months but those who don't have the complete program can use the demo version for really working with mathcad and decide if will be useful for them.

5 out of 5 stars Engineering with Mathcad - An Excellent Resournce for New and Experienced Mathcad Users.......2007-01-19

Brent Maxfield's Engineering with Mathcad is a valuable contribution to the engineering community that may do much to help those in engineering and the sciences in general jumpstart their efforts to learn and apply Mathcad, or to help long-time users strengthen their skills. The book is accessible, engaging, and written from the perspective of one who has dealt the practical aspects of Mathcad for many years. It comes with a useful CD having a handbook and all the examples in the text, allowing the users to easily follow along and work with the material being discussed. The CD also can be used to install Mathcad 13 for PC or Mac with a 120-day academic license.

The book covers a broad scope of material effectively, and should provide useful new insights even for power users. However, the book is not intended to provide a comprehensive guide to the functions and plotting features of Mathcad. For example, there is no significant discussion of solving differential equations. Indeed, many of the engineering applications covered are relatively basic, with the emphasis being more on how to use Mathcad effectively rather than how to tackle complex engineering problems. Given the burgeoning scope of Mathcad's tool and the many powerful features it has that experienced users may have been missing, Maxfield's approach represents a reasonable editorial decision to cover Mathcad broadly rather than to teach engineering mathematics or dive into the complexities of any of the numerous areas of interest in engineering.

The book may be especially valuable for those who are relatively new at Mathcad or who, like myself, have Mathcad experience but may not have used it for some time and need a refresher. But a carefully selected swathe of sophisticated aspects of Mathcad are treated that may be helpful to longtime Mathcad users who simply had no idea about some of the tools and capabilities they were overlooking.

With his years of Mathcad experience, Maxfield offers many tips, sometimes subtle, to guide users in creating worksheets, preventing errors, maintaining readability, selecting useful variable names, and so forth.

In general, I recommend Maxfield's book as an easy-to-read, well organized guide to help a wide range of Mathcad users learn techniques useful for engineering and many other fields as well.

I congratulate the author for an excellent book that I think will be helpful to numerous Mathcad users.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Reads too much like a history book.......2007-10-03

I don't understand why the consensus rating is 5/5. I found this book extremely wordy and it reads like a history book. If you want dozens of pages on the historical aspects of (insert your favorite chakra here), then this book is for you. If you want to see the same movies quoted and re-quoted over and over as examples of (insert your favorite chakra here), then this book is for you. If your idea of fun is combing through over one hundred pages dripping with hippy-isms looking for the "meat" you can use, then this book is for you. However, if you want a book that gives you a fair amount of background on a subject, fresh movie examples, and then leaves you with concrete ideas and examples of how to leverage the content matter to improve your characters and stories, then this book is not for you.

Notice how many times I repeat "this book is for you" and you'll get the idea of how this books reads. I am disappointed, especially given the 5/5 rating. It's more a 2/5 in my opinion, I got almost nothing useful out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Every Actor Needs This Book.......2007-06-27

And I thought I knew about acting. You know nothing until you apply this book. You can forget the first two chapters. Go back and read them later for a "wow" crash course in philosophy. Just accept that the chakra system works as viable structure (and how) start at chapter three and apply to your craft. Ms. Smith knows her stuff. I get so excited with this stuff.

So many books on the acting craft never get down to the fact that you are an actor helping tell a story; a story that you tell with other people onstage and offstage. This book will show you you where you fit in to the ensemble and what you need to do so your character is true to life. Like Michael Shurtleff's "Audition," it takes a subjective art form, acting, and makes it objective. You get to view your work from outside yourself, and where to apply everything else you have learned. Not until now have I found anything that helped me do that. I have tried Inner Drives and am having a blast. You will be making choices that people will want to see and keep coming back to you for more. You will never read or act a script the same way again.

Plus, it's a damn good read about movies.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Writers Journey.......2006-03-31

Wow. This is a great screenwriting book -- but it's so much more. Not only does it give you a better understanding of character, but it gives you a better understanding of human nature!

Pamela Jaye Smith has written one of the most intelligent, thought-provoking, and in-depth explanations and explorations on the key motivational centers of human beings. You won't ust learn how to build better characters, you'll discover how to develop your own character. No kidding. This is not just a manual for better writing -- it's a manual for better living!

Buy it. Devour it. Apply it. And read it again...and again...

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of examples teamed with exercises to help writers structure characters.......2005-11-06

There are some basic principles to writing good characters into novels and dramas and with them the aspiring screenwriter or novelist can produce powerful, three-dimension figures. Inner Drives: How To Write & Create Characters Using The Eight Classic Centers Of Motivation surveys these principles from the world of mythology, using plenty of examples teamed with exercises to help writers structure characters, devise subplots, make logical connections and more. Chapters discuss 'inner drive centers', link art and writing to New Age concepts, and survey archetypes and classic examples.

5 out of 5 stars An Insightful Book on New Techniques for Creating New Millennium Films.......2005-09-28

Pamela Jaye Smith's ground-breaking book is the first to connect the exciting field of subtle energy and esoteric anatomy with a character's motivation, style, and archetype. By showing how the chakra system affects behavior, she offers writers new pathways to creating authentic, multi-dimentional, and unforgettable personalities.

This is a must read for new-millennium screenwriters, breaking new ground in screenwriting. The inspired techniques for character development, described in "Inner Drives," go hand-in-hand with the stories we need to tell, to break through old paradigms and move into new possibilities in story telling.

This book is a treasure. I highly recommend "Inner Drives!"

Book Description

Manga Matrix presents an easy grid method for mastering manga, an increasingly popular comic style. Using this unique Japanese system, artists can plot and cross-section elements on a matrix diagram to create an infinite number of original characters, creatures, and multiformed beasts. Angels, demons, dragons, monsters, and robots are all included in this book, along with descriptions of costumes and personalities for each.

Manga Matrix is unlike any other manga instructional guide and is an invaluable resource for both the budding artist and the polished professional.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Book, Albeit Abit Difficult to Understand.......2007-08-18

This is a very good book filled with good information on how this artist logically compiles characters, but it's not easy to understand at times and the artist can be very vague and inconsistent on many details making this book a very tough read to process.

Pros:

This book presents a logical step-by-step process one could use to create unique characters. Gives a detailed working flow on how to CREATE, not just conceptualize, a character visually from head to toe. Example say your creating a half-robot character this book has a tree for the whole body and you can go into detail on what was robot and what was human from say something general like the torso right down to the fingernails. Much different from other general books like the "How to Draw Manga" series and others that just give a broad idea of how to start or just one or two examples of a specific character already made. Another good thing this book has going for it is how he has many different branches of creatures such as angels, devils, and dragons categorized with lots of suggestions so you can build or get inspiration if your stumped.

Cons:

The Artist is very vague on many details and his explanations leave something to desire. This is the way HE does his character design so likewise much of his workflow sounds like it comes from a long history of trial and error mixed with experience and he is having to explain something he most likely put together from different sources and compile them the best he can. As well he can be inconsistent on some details telling you to do one thing on one group of creatures but telling you to do something different later on, will be explaining one thing but leave you asking "But what happens next?" or "Wait, what do I do now?", or just graze on something interesting or important sounding then move on. Another complaint is how thin the creature index can be, some creature groups get more face time then others or just don't get enough explanations as if he assumes you already know how to do it or you already have a good working knowledge of the subject.

In the end this is a good book but it is in no way for beginners this is an ADVANCED book. It is possible to deceifer this book but it takes ALOT of brainpower to understand what he's talking about and fill in the blanks that he seems to assume you already know. The matrix he presents is a good system but it's hard to understand at first glance. But if you can overcome all these obstacles you can have yourself an extremely useful reference and guide to character design. The body part tree alone is a good reason to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Rare book.......2007-08-04

There is a lot of very good "how to draw" books, including "how to draw manga". If you need such kind, go and get them.
But this one is completely not about the drawing techniques, but rather is about what to do before you start to draw. It shows you a regular method how to think of you character, how is it supposed to look from three points of view (form, costume, personality) and how to get deeper into all three directions by using complex tabular checklists.
The idea of matrix method itself is not too complicated, and the method explanation takes about 30 pages. But the rest of the book illustrates how to use it by examples of creating monsters, artifical creatures, faires, and many more others types of characters.
This book is of good quality, full coloured and contains a lot of amazing illustration.
Could be useful not only to anime/manga fans, but for any artist, including game designers.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-06-08

I wish I had known of this book 4 years ago. Hiroyoshi Tsukamoto astutely created a simple system to help the designer "Save Time" when creating part- human characters. It elevates the quality of creativity, pushing the designer
into wider possibilities.Manga Matrix: Create Unique Characters Using the Japanese Matrix System

5 out of 5 stars Let The Manga Matrix Take You!.......2007-06-08

I did not know what to expect when I bought this book. When it came in the mail I was blown away by the concept of this Japanese grid system. The possibilities of new characters and monsters are endless. I love it! A must have for the aspiring manga artists.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting..........2007-02-18

This book is an introduction to making personal shrines. I would have liked to see more examples from working artists who create shrines for their work versus craft-type examples. Overall, I am still happy with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Crafting Personal Shrines.......2007-01-21

The book gave beautiful pictures and detailed instructions, a bit complex though...good thing im a shrine artist already, I have my own techniques with the same materials which is MUCH Simpler..

I learned a few new tricks I may use sometime!

3 out of 5 stars Let YOUR talents be stimulated by these inspiring *crafters*.......2007-01-06

Shall we accept a faddish definition of the word *shrine*? Author Carol Owen presents the concept of *shrining* in her book (now in paperback) - - as an extension of the popular hobbies of scrapbooking and collage. The book is a glossy compilation of many crafters who use 'found' articles & paints, photographs & aging techniques, and many quirky embellishments to suggest what is primarily fiction. The "stories" exist for the most part "in the eyes of the beholder."

The preference of Reviewer mcHAIKU happens to follow more closely dictionary definition #3: an object or site hallowed for its associations. As such, a shrine might clearly show its roots in the work of Joseph Cornell, and in this time of many yearnings *real* themes could be chosen with shrines built to celebrate them, and/or the people/icons associated with them. For example: Women's Rights; Heroines of Unpopular Causes; Global Warming; History of Minimum Wage; Water Rights.

Each would be deserving of the considerable time & talent demanded of the craftspeople. Nineteen share in Owen's book what they consider to be an artform. Many details are given, tips and sources for materials: and by going to carolowenart.com more colorful examples are found. Many readers will be inspired to try out their talents & discover great satisfaction in the results.

2 out of 5 stars Bad instructions.......2006-11-28

The book has 7 shrine projects. The instructions repeatedly send you back to the beginning of the book to repeat steps. The dimensions are different so you have to adapt. Pretty much a pain. Also, the dimensions given in shrine 6 are flat out wrong. Tried to find an addendum on the author's or publisher's website but none given. Cool photos of some finished shrines but be prepared for extra work trying to figure things out for yourself from the beginning.

4 out of 5 stars Original & inspiring..........2006-10-30

but not quite as helpful as I'd hoped. The style is very artsy and very collage. And there were not many ideas for decorating the shrine with personal memorabilia. The artists' section at the back is interesting, but not really inspiring to me personally. The instructions were excellent, the photos confused me a bit putting the shadowbox openings together, but other than that they were great. I will definitely be using the book to build a personal or gift shrine, but for decorating inspiration I might turn elsewhere. Would have liked more photos, more momentos.

Book Description

To make a big impression, says stencilling expert Sandra Buckingham, you don't have to re-create the Sistine Chapel. Start small, she counsels, and the rest will follow.

Buckingham's latest book Stencilling on a Grand Scale leads do-it-yourselfers beyond the realm of decorative borders featured in her best-selling "Stencilling: A Harrowsmith Guide" to a creative canvas whose limits are determined only by space, time and imagination. The key to her strategy is that a large stencilled work -- be it a door, wall, screen or floor -- can be the seamless sum of its parts. In other words, rather than using an expensive, unwieldy, multi-layered stencil to create a life-sized tree, use three 10 inch stencils of leaf clusters, laying and re-laying them to achieve the desired effect. The only limit to the ultimate size of the finished painting is the room you've set aside for it.

Whether you are fashioning a greeting card or a 40-foot mural, Buckingham recommends the same modest techniques. The methods used to faux-finish a wall -- a vine rambling up a corner, windows stencilled onto an actual door, a false shelf with flowerpots stencilled in an alcove -- can likewise be applied to furniture or folding screens and can be used on any scale.

A technical review of traditional and new stencilling tools is followed by a refresher course in basic stencilling methods, including stencil cutting, hard-surface stencilling, stencilling on primed canvas, overlays, registration and special effects, among them shading, shadows, plant detail and painting skies and landscapes. A chapter on freeform stencilling, with and without masks, prepares readers for the larger-scale works that are the book's central objective.

Buckingham advises perfecting your free-form skills on less ambitious projects (lampshades, borders, placemats) before moving to grander subjects. By the later chapters, stencillers will be comfortable tackling everything from picket and wrought iron fences, lattice work, garden gates, French doors, veranda doors and curtains to paving stones, terra-cotta tiles, carpets, mosaic floors, stone columns, balustrades, terraces, garden walls and room dividers. As always, Buckingham's genius lies in inspiration, and Stencilling on a Grand Scale introduces a how-to-world that has no boundaries.

I have enjoyed thinking about doing some of this. The book gives fine guidance

4 out of 5 stars Good Technique and Steps IF you like Folk Art type decor.......2005-12-02

The projects in this book were well-detailed and gave some good information on composition and layering of stencils. I checked this book out of the library and don't intend on buying it BUT I do recommend it if you like the more folkart type decor. I was looking for something more realistic in floral decor. The trellice project was very cute and would look great with a cottage country look.

5 out of 5 stars The Best For Beginners.......2002-09-20

I came across this book in my local library and loved it so much I bought a copy for myself. Ms. Buckingham manages to create beautiful trompe l'oeil work with simple techniques that are easy for even the absolute beginner. An added bonus is that her stencils are available online...

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and Experts.......2001-10-28

I purchased this book 2 years ago. At the time I did not know they sold stencils until I purchased a few stencils on their website along with their video. The book is easy to follow and they give you many ways to incooporate simple stencils. This book encouraged me to create a mural from a small picture and brought out a talent that I never knew existed. Well done. Fantastic pictures with great color which I feel either makes or breaks a simple stencil or a 5 layered stencil. I would highly recommend their book, stencils and their video. If I can learn, anyone can!!!! A+++++

5 out of 5 stars Hard Cover Quality In a Paperback.......2000-09-22

Grab this book without hesitation!

I saw the author on the show, "Home Matters" and was instantly motivated to buy this book. When I saw that it was available in both hard- and soft- cover verrsions, my decision was difficult. Usually saving a few bucks on the paperback version of any book means sacrificing quality; thin paper, fewer illustrations, shortened versions. etc.

When I opted to buy this in the paperback form, I was expecting the usual compromises. I was, joyfully, wrong! This book not only boasts the easy instructions and wonderful pictorials of the hardcover version, it also has wonderful, high quality paper stock rarely found even in hardcover these days. The quality of this book will stand up to years of planning and crafting!

    Book Description

Memories do not necessarily have any association with good or bad design, but simply with devices that stay in the mind's eye. Good design is often memorable, but not always mnemonically, in that it cannot be described, or recreated with any assured accuracy. Viewers may have a recollection of its pleasing nature, but have little recall as to precisely why this is. If "red top" newspaper mastheads, the McDonalds golden arches, the Nike logo or the Heinz baked beans label are considered typical of successful mnemonic devices, it is interesting to debate their aesthetic merits. Sticky Graphics evaluates the audience's role in responding to mnemonic devices by discussing the impact of such influences as experience, familiarity and uniqueness. For example, designs that feature a viewer's favorite color, shape, or significant topic are likely to trigger a more positive and productive memory. Defined as the art of assisting memory, mnemonics play an essential and often unsung role in successful graphics. Sticky Graphics concentrates on the mnemonics of graphic design, and focuses on design memory devices. Presenting methods and solutions for ensuring audience retention and recollection though and examination of Typography, Graphic Wit and Shock, Metaphor Language, Use of Scale, Color Image, Materials, and Composition as well as insight into smell, sound, and touch.

    Book Description

The graphic novel, which evolved from comic books, is now one of the publishing industry's fastest-growing media. Meanwhile, the pen, ink, and drawing-board method traditionally used by artists and writers to create graphic novels, is now being superceded by digital illustration and lettering. Perhaps even more revolutionary is the fact that the internet is starting to replace traditional book publishers as an important outlet for distributing graphic novels. From first inspiration to publication, this book teaches budding graphic novelists how and where to translate their drawing and storytelling talents into digitally-realized art. In easy-to-follow steps, the authors demonstrate—
  • How to ink and color illustrations using computer software
  • How to create dialogue balloons and fill them with visually satisfying type fonts
  • How to develop a story line and give dimension to the story's characters
  • How to get a finished graphic novel noticed and published
BR> Approximately 350 dramatic and instructive color illustrations complement the text.

1 out of 5 stars not worth the few minutes or bucks I spent on it.......2007-03-14

I bought this expecting a little in depth step by step, but essentially it just says; "these are some of the programs and this is what you can do with them." ...it only skims different program's abilities to help an artist be productive. I was hoping for a good reference book to have by my side while using my wacom. But, rather, it seems going to the various online tutorials would have been a better choice for me. And a good chunk of the book is dedicated to things other than lessons on how to use tools on your computer to be productive. there are far better books on how to prepare, write for, and publish your comic/graphic novel than this monstrosity. Plus it's entirely in comic form...not good for reference what so ever.
all in all extremely, I can't emphasize this enough, EXTREMELY disappointing.
