Book Description
This volume is the only existing biography of one of America's greatest and most influential cartoonists. Winsor McCay (1867-1934) is universally acknowledged as the first master of both the comic strip and the animated cartoon. Although invented by others, both genres were developed into enduring popular art of the highest imagination through McCay's innovative genius. Originally published in 1987, it is now back in print in a newly expanded and revised edition on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Little Nemo in Slumberland. Included are new materials found since the previous publication of the book such as new comic strips of Little Nemo in Slumberland, and new sketches of Gertie the Dinosaur
In the book the author reviews and fully analyzes McCay's achievements in print and film while examining his work in relation to his life, family, and to American culture and values of the period. This painstakingly thorough biography begins with McCay's childhood in Michigan to his seat as one of the greatest of the early animators.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful book.......2006-02-23
If you don't know McCay's work, check out "Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend" and "Little Nemo in Slumberland" (not the movie). His art was visually compelling and psychologically savvy. Nemo was the more elaborate, with plenty of grand vistas and architectural wonders while Rarebit was visually spare, but more adult in content. All his work has a marvelously surreal sense about it, heightened by the detailed realism of his style - characters exit the confines of the strip or discuss the cartoonist's failings with the reader, landscapes and characters metamorphose into new configurations in ways that are perhaps best described as psychedelic.
This book presents a biography of this strange and gentle man as well as a generous sampling of his better work, including more obscure feaures and his stunning editorial cartoons (more sweeping panoramas and vast architectural wonders). Also recommended is the Fantagraphics volume "Daydreams and Nightmares" which offers up another good cross-section of his work (except Nemo, which is collected elsewhere).
A true American original, it's a shame more people don't know and appreciate his work.
Great framing of McCay's work and life.......2005-12-05
It amazes me how little information and awareness there is of Windsor McCay and his work now when he was so well known during his lifetime. While thanks to the DVD collection of animation and the recently self-published (and now sold out) large scale book of Little Nemo strips, Little Nemo in Slumberland - So Many Splendid Sundays, more people are discovering him. All contemporary cartoonist are greatly indebted to him. John Canemaker has thankfully republished and updated the only biography of McCay.
Throughout the book there are rare photographs, posters and excellent reproductions of his Sunday comics pages. Canemaker does an excellent job of setting the context under which McCay traveled through his life and created his art. While the book does an excellent job of illuminating McCay's surroundings and events in his life it is unfortunately is not able to cast much light on the man himself. For whatever reasons Canemaker cannot or will not go out on a limb to discuss interior motives and thoughts of McCay. l finished the book knowing a lot about McCay's work but very little about what made him tick. With access to personal letters and other items of the estate I was hoping for more. Why did he allow Hurst to relegate him to an editorial cartoonist and give up his strips? How did he feel about it?
If fleshing out the character of McCay is the book's weak point, it's strength is the discussion of McCay's work. Canemaker pulls on his impressive knowledge of not only McCay's work but the history of comics and animation to provide some truly insightful commentary. His sometimes panel-by-panel discussion of some of McCay's more striking work was a pleasure to read and at times like taking a course on comic appreciation.
If you're looking for a riveting character biography, look elsewhere. But if your looking to find out more about Windsor McCay's contributions to comics and animation this volume is an excellent resourse.
An in-depth look at one of America's premier Cartoonists.......1998-12-07
A debt of gratitude is owed to John Cannemaker for his comprehensive book on Winsor McCay, and his many artistic endeavors. McCay, whose vivid perception has inspired artists and animators for decades, is captured in this exhaustive study. A rich range of his art complements many personal photos of McCay and his family, most notably perhaps, his son Robert, who was the inspiration for Little Nemo.
Book Description
Maurice Sendak is one of most admired artists in children's literature. His uniquely expressive illustrations, which bring to life a world of fantasy and imagination, have won him the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, the Caldecott Medal, and most recently the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for Literature in 2003. Picking up where Selma Lanes's earlier, landmark monograph, The Art of Maurice Sendak, left off, this new book traces Sendak's life and work from 1980 to the present, representing two decades filled with projects inside and outside the children's book arena. This strikingly designed volume is overflowing with hundreds of wonderful Sendak illustrations: sketches and final art for opera, ballet, and theater productions, as well as children's books, adult book jackets, posters, and CD covers.
An extended essay by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner, a friend of the artist, provides an intimate view of Sendak. With an insider's perspective, Kushner not only gives us a chronological overview of Sendak's work, but also allows us to see him as an accomplished author and artist redefining his legacy, and as a man coming to terms with himself. This survey will only add to our understanding and appreciation of this multitalented artist, whose creative endeavors are among the most inventive and treasured of our time.

Beyond Dr. Seuss's work for children is an entirely different world--perhaps similar in whimsy and humor, but even more wondrous. The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss is a short (less than 100 pages) and beautiful full-color coffee-table book filled with cartoons, sketches, and oil paintings. The collection of birds, cats, lions, and pointy-headed people is fairly familiar territory for any true Seuss fan, but with a deeper amount of detail and more sophisticated tones. A favorite design in ink is titled "Impractical Marshmallow Toasting Device"--it's easy to see Seuss didn't find art to be a serious business. And could the oil painting "Cat from the Wrong Side of the Tracks" be a rendition of Cat in the Hat's evil twin? A wonderful, intriguing book for Seuss fans of all ages. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
These fabulous, whimsical paintings, created for his own pleasure and never shown to the public, show Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) in a whole new light. Depicting outlandish creatures in otherworldly settings, the paintings use a dazzling rainbow of hues not seen in the primary-color palette of his books for children, and exhibit a sophisticated and often quite unrestrained side of the artist. 65 color illustrations.

deep visual trip into the life of a gifted man.......2007-09-14
this book is moving. in the way that a rainy day or a kitten effect your mood, this book too, will leave you changed.
i love this book.
Dr. Seuss .......2006-08-14
This book gives you some of the everyday images from Dr. Seuss' children books and sketches for those characters, but also invites you into a secret world of other at that he created, some reminiscent of his popular books, but some much more abstract and interesting.
This book is a good buy for those who want to see more of who Dr. Seuss really was and what other art he created.
Geisel was truly an artist, as can be seen in this collection.......2006-07-10
Ted Geisel, more widely known as Dr. Seuss, was a consummate writer and illustrator. His children's books have sold millions of copies; it is a near certainty that few children grow up in the United States without being exposed to Seuss books. This book contains some of Seuss's art that has not had a great deal of exposure. Most are paintings, although there are some works of three-dimensional art.
There are some very subtle messages in these paintings. On page 67 the image has the title "A Man Who Has Made an Unwise Prochess (sic)." A sad-looking man is walking from a distant building along a trail where there are sharp drops on both sides. The image caught and held my eye as I tried to determine what was so familiar about it. Then I realized that the man looked a great deal like Adolph Hitler. The eyes, hair, mustache and shape of the face all match.
Most of the other works contain characters similar to those that have appeared in his books. They are all well done, exuding a brightness and joy so typical of the Dr. Seuss books. Geisel was just as much an artist as he was a writer, perhaps even more so. If you examine this book, you may also reach that conclusion.
The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss.......2005-09-06
I've always been fascinated by Dr. Seuss's illustrations & the art pictured here just adds to my interest.
Seuss Specifically For Adults.......2004-08-13
I have been fascinated with Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) since I was a kid and my Mom and Dad would read Seuss stories to me. I had an interesting perspective of Seuss from a young age, though. My father, an English Professor, was writing his Doctoral dissertation on "Transformational Grammar in the Works of Dr. Seuss". In this treatise (which involved a good bit of math, it turns out: my Dad's undergraduate education was in Metallurgical Engineering) my Dad approached Seuss from a very adult point of view. Even after growing up, I would continue to marvel at the seeming simplicity of the Seuss tales, while grasping the incredible complexity underlying them all. Needless to say, my late father deserves credit for initially exploring these facets with me.
With that background, I had been looking forward to a compendium of the Seuss "adult" art. This is it, and it is glorious. These pieces are at once similar stylistically to his animation for kids (although I really do believe that kids of all ages love Seuss), but on the other hand are much earthier and adult. To my delight many of these pieces feature cats, but some of the cats are decidedly not friendly, witness, for instance "Cat from the Wrong Side of the Tracks" (1964). I am particularly fond of his more avant-garde paintings like "Impractical Marshmallow-Toasting Device", a piece that I would not have been able to identify as a Geisel if not for the telltale handwritten inscription.
There is no doubt that Dr. Seuss is for adults as well as children (I also recommend checking out his World War Two political cartoons), and I am delighted to finally have this book (with introduction by the wonderful and whimsical Maurice Sendak) available to see what Ted Geisel did in his spare time. I recommend this book highly.

Great addition to any book collection!.......2007-04-30
Coleman Jennings is known in the theatre world for his vast knowledge of plays for young audiences, and this collection of plays is an excellent one. Jennings combines great plays in this book, ones that audiences and actors love! Great scenes for the classroom or for enjoying at home. EVERY classroom teacher should own this book!
Theatre for Young Audiences: 20 Great Plays.......2007-04-16
This book is like new--beautiful! Thank you! Came fast and safe.
Excellent for teaching!.......2007-04-10
I love this book! The plays are deep and meaningful. Normally, my students would never want to read something so deep but since it is a play they are more motivated to do so. I like it a lot better than using novels because most of the plays are fairly short at least for 5th graders and up (They're about 10-20 pages long). This perfect for pulling lessons about story structure, characterizations, themes, and whatnot without having to read a full length novel or a lower level picture book.
There is a lot to discuss in these plays. For example, we are reading The Ice Wolf in class today. This is a story about a little Eskimo girl who is rejected by her community because she looks different and was almost threw out in the snow to die by her own father. We were about to discuss the father's internal struggle to follow the ways of his people and the love of his own daughter with my 5th graders.
Plays seem to be great motivators for my kids to read and discuss literature in a deeper way. These plays allow you do so in a 'just right' manner. You are putting the kids over their heads with Shakespeare or dumbing it down too much with other kiddie plays out there. I would recommend this for Intermediate/Upper Grades.
Good book.......2006-07-11
The person who received this book as a gift loves the plays in it for their class.
great theatre resource, plays fun just to read too.......2001-07-05
Coleman A. Jennings was a professor of mine at the University of Texas at Austin, and this collection was a required textbook for his class. Instead of selling back the book when the semester was over, I kept it, because the plays are such good ones. As the Booklist review says, the anthology includes original plays as well as adaptations of well-known folk and fairy tales.
Quite the multicultural collection, many countries and cultures are represented: Cajun, Native American, African, Jewish, Eskimo, Southern Plantation, Russian, Central American, Japanese, and Scottish.
The plays and authors included are: 1. Charlotte's Web - Joseph Robinette 2. The Arkansaw [sic] Bear - Aurand Harris 3. Really Rosie - Maurice Sendak 4. The Secret Garden - Pam Sterling 5. Wiley and the Hairy Man - Suzan Zeder 6. According to Coyote - John Kauffman 7. The Mischief Makers - Lowell Swortzell 8. The Wise Men of Chelm - Sandra F. Asher 9. Crow & Weasel - Jim Leonard 10. In a nutshell, The Art of Maurice Sendak is simply stunning. Page after page of lavish full-color illustrations and black-and-whites from one of America's best-loved children's artists adorn this hefty volume. Sendak, best known for the charming and timeless Where the Wild Things Are, never fails to amuse and astonish with his creative wizardry. He was talented from the cradle, and his early works from the 1940s are given due recognition here--reflecting his fascination with the small intricacies of being human, and his devilish sense of humor. Even a stuffy physics textbook from 1947 is given the Sendak touch, as atoms, molecules, and chain reactions take on the form of people jiving and swinging. Always the artistic adventurer, Sendak experiments with many different forms--from the fairy-tale-like pen-and-ink drawings of Higglety Pigglety Pop! to the beautiful watercolor pieces that illustrate Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present. Virtually every page contains another Sendak gem--be it a quick sketch, an exquisite portrait of his mother or sister, or the preliminary drawings from Where the Wild Things Are. Three huge fold-outs make for an extra-special treat.
The book's rich text is exemplary--based on interviews, conversations, and extensive research by Sendak's close friend Selma Lanes. The author invites us into the very special world of Maurice Sendak, a place of fantasies and wonderment, a land where adults can be children--and never grow up. --Naomi Gesinger
Customer Reviews:
Buy this for the art not the biography.......2007-03-21
Like countless others I emerged from childhood loving the stories and artwork of Maurice Sendak. Now as an artist myself I would like to know more about him, his techniques and inspiration. The bio is a tiresome read. Obviously Selma Lanes adores Maurice Sendak judging by the gushy and somewhat sycophantic writing. I think she has been so careful to respect his privacy that there is nothing insightful written at all. I reckon she could have done a better job.
An illustrator, artist, writer, making the history........2003-04-08
For many north american and japanese families, everyone must remember the legendary children book of their young age, "Where the wild things are" by Maurice Sendak. Well, Sendak didn't just draw and write his own children books. He did many other things before actually getting to the success he is at now.
The book goes in detail about Sendak's personal life growing up in Brooklyn, New York, from his very early stage of life as a Polish American child to his approach as an artist at teenage age. The author talks about his influence from his parents and siblings, as well their struggle to survive the recessive economy in America. The author treats Sendak as an artist, who explores mostly around the writings and illustrations of children. The book shows many rare prints and drawings of Sendak. How Sendak plays with art materials and his creativity into both pictorial children books and editorial illustrations. Near the end of the book it also talks about his plans and drawings for theatre art, especially the opera for "Where the Wild Things Are". Something not everyone knew about!
I would say this is a book for any illustration fan or artist to own. But don't get it for your kid, it is no children book, it is an artbook mostly aim for adults and collectors.
The Best picture book ever!!.......2000-09-10
This book is the best book ever my children love it! The pictures are awesome nothing can compare to Maurice Sendak's pictures.

Wolves and pigs have always been excellent fodder for suspenseful children's stories, and Swine Lake proves it once again, this time in the masterful hands of the late James Marshall and Maurice Sendak. Marshall wrote the book fully intending to illustrate it himself, but when he died in 1992, his good friend Sendak was charged with the challenging task of bringing this delightful work to life. And come to life it does! The rollicking tale opens with a mangy, hungry wolf on the prowl in an unfamiliar part of town. Soon the wolf's nose twitches uncontrollably. He smells pigs! Just across the street is a theater marquee bearing the words Swine Lake. Boarshoi Ballet. The wolf can scarcely conceal his delight, and "soon the aroma of pig, thinly disguised by French perfume, was making him swoon."
Snatching matinee tickets from a swanky ticket-scalping sow who arrives in a limousine, he enters the theater. "Had the ticket taker been more observant, he would have noticed the long claws and much that follows could have been avoided," Marshall adds parenthetically. The wolf is escorted by a distracted usher to his box seat, just a short pounce from the stage. When the show begins, the wolf ponders which might be the juiciest pig. But as he assesses the probable quality of the pork, he begins to get lost in the magical story, and decides to put off his attack until act 2... and in fact forgets to make his move altogether. That very night he breaks into his piggy bank and spends his last penny on a ticket for the evening performance of Swine Lake.
Anyone who is familiar with Swan Lake will be positively giddy to behold Marshall and Sendak's porcine take on this well-known ballet, but certainly no cultural context is necessary to appreciate the simple plot. With a winning story about the power of the theater to soothe the hungriest, toothiest of beasts, this fabulous team has made an absolutely historic contribution to children's literature. Fans will see a lighter, funnier side to Sendak than they've seen before, as Marshall's comic spirit gently guides his paintbrush and pens. (Click to see a sample spread. Book Description
When a lean and mangy wolf stumbles into the Boarshoi Ballet, he finds tasty pigs a-plenty, twirling and whirling in a performance of Swine Lake. Faced with all those luscious porkers, whats a hungry wolf to do? Well, something totally surprising, as it turns out.
Pure fun from Marshall and Sendak--an incomparable duo!

Hamming it Up: Swine Lake.......2007-03-11
Hilariously melodramatic monologue, generous, engaging narrative and classic Sendak illustrations make this theatrical romp a favourite of adults and children alike.
A STELLAR review.......2002-10-05
If wolves went to ballet, they wouldn't go to Swan Lake, they would go to Swine Lake! We think 4th and 5th graders would like this book because it is more challenging. You should read it a couple times to really understand it and have fun reading it. It's a very good book. It has action in it. We thought it would be rated 4.
Swine Lake - A ballet review.......2000-06-20
Swine Lake is a wonderfully creative story. It takes a twist that my daughter (age 7) nor I expected. The art of Maurice Sendak is as wonderful as ever. Great fun to read.
Swine Lake-simply magnificent.......2000-05-31
Swine lake, was absolutely wonderful, and it brought back memories of my childhood years. I reccomend it to those who are young at heart. I found it a very tasteful, and enjoyable piece of literature. So read it i say...thankyou
Swooning over SWINE LAKE.......2000-03-15
I bought this book for my three year old daughter for Christmas. Although she has nearly a hundred books, she has requested this one every night for three months. She knows most of it verbatim. I think the book's okay, but for her it is something truly special and charming. She enjoys the dilema of the wolf, the grumpy landlady and the diverse characters of the pigs. This is a great story for kids with budding imaginations.

Images & Dreams of Peace.......2005-05-29
UNICEF volunteers offered displaced children in the former Yugoslavia workshops in art and writing. These children's voices are here, sharing their experiences with the world. A valuable classroom teaching aid. Third & Fourth graders especially seem to connect with their international counterparts. Colorful drawings, clear poems (trans. to English). I often use this book as an introduction to "write and draw your images of peace". Or, for those classrooms that are in a battle zone, this book would allow children to explore and to express their complicated reactions and visions. Also useful in lower grades as the drawings are very accessible. The vision is: out of war, peace is possible.
War self-evidently assaults early childhood development........1999-11-08
To read "Jim" Grant, former Executive Director ofUNICEF, is to read Cole P. Dodge--who survives Grant and remainssingularly dedicated to bettering the healthcare delivery systems to both women and children the world over.

Clark: "It is fitting that the work of Maurice Sendak comprises the inaugural exhibit of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. While an acknowledged master of the genre, his creative talent extends well beyond the picture book. Sendak has garnered high esteem in the realm of costume and set design for opera
.As we honor picture book art and demonstrate its substance and sophistication, Sendak's industrious career permits us to look at the material from a broad art-historical vantage point. We have chosen to view his work through the lens of interior scenes and landscapes."
