If you're a Weight Watcher, this collection of 500 recipes in a handy loose-leaf binder could put you in the fast lane on the road to success. This cookbook is designed for Weight Watchers' 1•2•3 Success program: points are assigned to foods based on fat, fiber, and calories, and your daily point allowance is based on your current weight. So you can eat what you want, as long as you don't go over your allotted points. The better your food choices, the more you can eat before you run out of points.

Recipes are varied and cover the whole gamut: sauces; breads; soups; meat, chicken, fish, and vegetarian entrees; pasta; vegetable, grain, and potato side dishes; and, of course, desserts. The recipes are more healthful but not drastically different from foods you and your family enjoy now. Many are familiar comfort foods, such as Pizza, Oven "Fried" Chicken, Beef Stew, Tuna Noodle Casserole, Chocolate Layer Cake, and Cheesecake. Internationally inspired favorites include Dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), Orange-Flavored Fajitas, Moo Shu Chicken, Tandoori Haddock, and Senegalese Peanut Soup. The nutritional breakdown for each recipe is more complete than in most cookbooks, and includes calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrate, fiber, protein, calcium, and Weight Watchers' points. --Joan Price

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-29

This book (along with a couple other WW books) helped me lose over 30 lbs. very happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Great Recipes!.......2007-08-01

This book has great recipes and a nice mix of flex and core. I have made more than 10 of the recipes and they were easy to follow with good explanations and mostly easy to find ingredients. I recommend highly even if you own other WW cookbooks!

5 out of 5 stars Best WW cookbook by far.......2007-07-19

This is the best weight watchers cookbook I have ever seen. The recipes are not only delicious, but they use ingredients that most of us have on hand or can easily get. My husband (not on weight watchers) has loved every recipe that I have made so far. These are not "diet" food recipes, just good, healthy eating recipes :o)

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-07-18

I ordered this cookbook when I joined weight watchers through amazon.com. There aren't a lot of vegan or vegetarian recipies, and those listed are tasteless. Worse is the Weight Watchers online program. The website is slow and cumbersome and difficult to figure out. While the online blog can be good at times, it certainly isn't worth the money. It took 4 months to cancel through WW accounting department after the first request. BEWARE!!!

5 out of 5 stars Weight Watchers Cookbook.......2007-07-05

This cookbook contains great recipes and innovative cooking ideas for those following the Weight Watchers food plan. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Without a doubt, a must-have for IM residency..........2007-03-05

This book will save the rear-ends of both you & your patients. I rarely find a topic which isn't covered in this book when I need it. The index is superb, and full, concise explanations are there to guide your diagnosis/workup. It fits nicely into my white coat, and I feel pretty vulnerable without it.. especially doing new admissions or consults. Get yourself this book and do everyone a favor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I purchased 5 books and am so glad I did!!!.......2007-09-18

This book is truly a great deal. Hard cover, spiral so the book lays flat. Plastic insert to keep your pages clean. One of the best books for a beginner cook. Directions on cuts of meat, how to carve a turkey, different herbs and their use, different kinds of mushrooms, measurements and equivalents, cooking times, all kinds of tips and very helpful directions... I could go on with that but it's quite clear :-) Great Indexes and each section has it's own little indexe. Recipes are easy to follow and the ones I have tried so far are delicious. I have four children and each one is receiving the book as a present for christmas! Definitely worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Another Taste Of Home great!.......2007-08-27

I honestly didn't expect anything less than great and that is what I got! It is a good book with real food for real families!

5 out of 5 stars truly the best cookbook.......2007-07-30

I received this cookbook a few weeks ago as a bridal shower gift. I am getting married in September, and I am not the best of cooks, but I am trying to learn. I can cook basic things (e.g. stir fry) and follow recipes. Luckily, my fiance is an awesome cook, but both he and I were sick of complicated recipes that involved too many pots and pans (we don't have a dishwasher) and too many one-time-use grocery purchases. (Like clam juice or mustard seed.) This cookbook is amazing. Every recipe we have tried has turned out and tasted FABULOUS. Most of the recipes are quite simple and use things that we already have or would buy anyway. The cookbook also has great, simple tips on cooking techniques and food information. Someone at my bridal shower told me it would be the only cookbook I would ever need and they were right!

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised But Shouldn't Have Been.......2007-07-15

I ordered this cookbook as a wedding gift for a young woman who doesn't know much about cooking. The reason for choosing this cookbook over others is the reputation of Taste of Home magazine and it's recipes.

The book arrived and now I want a copy of my own. And I've been cooking for over 60 years. I lust for this book.

It's a perfect combination of information for new cooks, mouth watering pictures, and yummy sounding recipes that the more experienced cook would like to try. And it does all this in the TOH special down-to-earth style. Not snooty and above the rest of us as some cookbooks tend to be.

I highly recommend this book for young folks starting out on their own. Whether in marriage, career, or some combination. A perfect first cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Recipes.......2007-07-15

I have always enjoyed a great recipe and knowing that "Taste of Home" has never let me down, I chose this as a gift for a friend. I then decided that it was too good a cookbook to not have for myself and purchased one also. I was indeed correct; my family has not had one recipe from this book that was not enjoyed. A real winner for the novice or experienced cook or baker.

Over time, twin enterprises Cook's Illustrated magazine and America's Test Kitchen have published many books dedicated to providing exhaustively tested recipes--"best" versions of traditional dishes plus definitive takes on kitchen equipment and ingredients. Some series readers have complained of endlessly recycled or rejiggered recipes; others take each book at face value, finding the formulas and cooking insights good and helpful. America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook, which calls itself a cookbook, cooking school, and kitchen reference in one, offers over 1,200 approachable recipes for a very wide range of dishes--from "weekday" fare like Creamy Rice Casserole, Cheesy Nachos with Spicy Beef, and Skillet Lasagna, to dressier recipes, including Pan-Seared Lamb Chops with Red Wine Rosemary Sauce, Roasted Trout Stuffed with Bacon and Spinach, and Chocolate Marshmallow Mousse. There are "specialty" chapters devoted to sandwiches, drinks, and slow cooker and pressure cooker dishes; a grilling section is a tutorial in itself.

Unorthodox, "better-way" approaches abound. For example, a fried chicken formula instructs the cook to wet the bird's dry coating slightly before it's applied for an extra-crunchy crust. Predictably, side bars feature equipment and ingredient evaluations, on bottled salsa, for example; "good food/bad food" photographs show readers what to aim for when producing fare like holiday cookies; and there are tips, charts, and "Cooking 101" sidebars galore. Step-by-step photos offer more direction still.

Though the majority of recipes are sound and yield tempting results, readers poring through the book will note gaffes and curiosities. The recipe for poached eggs, for example, offers the option of extra cooking for "firm yolks" (hard-boiled poached eggs, anyone?) and hamburgers receive an indentation before cooking to avoid "puffy" domed burgers, a novel problem that could, in any case, be solved by proper shaping. The addition of sugar to some savory dishes--for example, a pan sauce for steak--is misguided. Readers should also know that the book, which comes in loose-leaf form, requires some assembly, and that the pages themselves are quite thin, making them vulnerable to spills and tearing in daily kitchen use.

These things said, the book delivers solid, family-friendly dishes with enough fully orchestrated "how- to" to make even novice cooks feel secure when tackling the basics or more ambitious fare.

What's New in the Revised Editon?
First out in 2005, America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook was praised for its recipe ease, inclusiveness, and wealth of helpful information, but was also criticized for its physical production. A loose-leaf book with its pages included separately, readers found it inconvenient to assemble and its paper impractically thin. The revised edition is printed on heavier stock, and arrives with its pages already on its rings (there are two more now, for sturdiness) with only chapter dividers to insert, a simple task.

In addition, new inside front and back covers provide information on emergency substitutions, roasting guidelines, equivalent measures, and more--and a "Light Recipes" chapter has been included. Without defining precisely what "light" means--fewer fats and carbs, or a combo?--the section offers attractive all-course recipes, such as turkey chili, veggie burgers, meat and cheese lasagna, and chocolate bundt cake. Some readers will welcome the "slimming" of familiar dishes while others will find some of the manipulations--using cornstarch to thicken the sauce in fettuccine alfredo or ricotta to add body to a reduced-fat pesto, for example--unappealing. The book, however, remains a valuable kitchen tool--and one with greater convenience and durability than before. --Arthur Boehm

5 out of 5 stars Family Cookbook, America's Test Kitchen.......2007-09-27

I have been a subscriber of Cooks Magazine for over ten years now and have never been dissapointed. I am a professional Chef and find most of their publications to be great sources. My still favorite and mostly used source is the original Julia Child Cookbook based on her TV programs of years ago but this America's Test Kitchen publication,I suspect, I will use a great deal.

4 out of 5 stars Test Kitchen Cookbook.......2007-09-26

I really like this cookbook because it has good pictures and explainations for techniques with which new cooks may be unfamiliar. Putting the pages and dividers in yourself is clear and easy. The pages are a little thinner than I would prefer for a cookbook, but I just use a clear plastic page protector that one might use for a portfolio or scrapbook to keep the page I am using clean. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars The America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook.......2007-09-15

Amazon did an outstanding timely job getting me the cookbook. This cookbook is the very best I have ever read. I gave one to my daughter and will be ordering one for myself. Thanks.

The best basic recipes ever published. All tested.

Wish they would issue update pages with more and new recipes

5 out of 5 stars Best for your money.......2007-09-11

I have owned many cookbooks over the years, but this one is my favorite. I have cooked for over 30 years, and I still learn techniques from this book. If you are a new cook or an experienced one, you need this book.

Book Description

The 2006 International Building Code®addresses the design and installation of building systems through requirements that emphasize performance. Fully compatible with all the International Codes, the 2006 edition provides up-to-date, comprehensive coverage that establishes minimum regulations for building systems using prescriptive and performance-related provisions. Content is founded on broad-based principles that make possible the use of materials and building designs. Structural as well as fire- and life-sfety provisions covering seismic, wind, accessibility, egress, occupancy, roofs, and more are included.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pricey but essential.......2006-06-29

Revised, expanded, and essential to anyone in the building industry because these codes apply across the board, including virtually all states in the US. The IBC has replaced state and other building codes. This volume provides information in the English measuring system. I prefer the looseleaf edition to the bound volume because it folds completely open and you can leaf through the pages more easily, as you are constantly being referred from one section to another. Of course you will want to update your other international code books as well.

Patternmaking for Fashion Design and DVD Package (4th Edition)

I'm an intermediate level sewer and haven't had a course in patternmaking. However I have found this book invaluable even though it is written as a textbook. I haven't read it cover to cover because I regard it as a reference book. However, after having reviewed the sections that relate to the sewing I do, I have found it very enlightening. There are certain principles that I didn't understand until I read it, such as dart rotation. This, for instance, will be very helpful to me in altering commercial patterns to make them fit better. I plan to do some pattern drafting, but will probably use it mostly in altering commercial patterns. For instance, I was recently altering a pants pattern and wondered if I was changing the ratio of the width of the front leg to the back. The book answered my question while books on pattern alterations didn't address this issue. The layout of the book has been thoroughly explained in other reviews, so I won't go into describing it. I will say, however, that I highly recommend this book for anyone who sews as a hobby because it answers a lot of questions one would have when it comes to altering commercial patterns or drafting simple patterns. It's expensive, but money well spent. This book should be in the library of any serious sewer.

1 out of 5 stars No, No, No.............2007-01-23

This book is outdated, outmoded, and nearly useless. It contains tons of information on how to manipulate fabrics that aren't even in use anymore. Hardly anything on dealing with knit fabrics, which look better and are easier to manipulate. Ask anyone under 50 if they have ever seen any darts in their clothes? And all this slashing and turning and manipulating??? not only is it sloppy, its useless, Useless, USELESS! Lots of money spent for vague instructions on basic blocks, and only clothes made in the 80's. Save eyour money, just because this book is expensive, doesn't make it useful.

3 out of 5 stars Extensive, but a few mistakes..........2006-11-03

I was required to purchase this book for my fashion design class. At first I was completely blown away at how comprehensive it was. It talked about measuring, darts and manipulation, basic patterns and principles, women, mens, children, knit, and sportswear. From what I can tell, it's based off of " Industry Standards". So It's not your everyday Joe book.

During class though, many of my teachers noticed discrepancies in the instructions. Particularly the fitted arm block. It made me fail my class twice because the first and second teacher didn't catch that the instructions were incorrect, causing me to continually make an incorrect arm block. It took my DRAPING teacher to find out that the book was incorrect in the instructions for the sleeve cap.

We also had a problem during class, when the instructions made an extremely wonky sleeve pattern, and also a two dart bodice. The student was extremely frustrated with the book and the teacher for their lack of help and knowledge. The student was not an " industry standard" size. So the measurement guides were not available to her to make a proper judgement. She had to receive a bad grade because the book would not produce the correct pattern, and the teacher didn't know what to do.

Otherwise, this book is still a great reference. Many of the styles seem outdated, but yet can be played on to create current looks. But some of the wedding sleeve types are somewhat awful, but that's personal opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Some Instructions Inadequate.......2006-09-10

I purchased this book as my figure has changed and I needed to re-do my basic slopers. The pattern design books I currently have did not cover trousers so I was delighted to find a new book that was apparently so comprehensive.

I found however that the method used to create basic bodice slopers, simply did not work with my measurements. There was no way the strap measurement was going to reach the line it was supposed to and there is no way to work around it as the rest of the drafting works from the point created.

I would also have liked some instructions on how to take measurements on live people rather than just models. If "the strap measurement may cover the armplate", what happens with an arm in the way? After all at least a few fashion students would hopefully go on to work with actual people rather than just standard measurements or models. I thought it was a major flaw in the book that there was no instruction on taking personal measurements & so little instruction on creating the basic slopers. It is really disppointing to have to find another method before I can use the rest of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Finally ! Best value for my dollar.......2006-09-01

I received this book yesterday and read the first 100 pages. I've sewn all my life and consider myself an advanced seamstress. I've sewn and made my own patterns for childrens' heirloom, business suits, and now enjoy making (jazz) dance costumes. I'm the one in line at the fabric store buying ten patterns, just to combine different details and features in different sizes, especially if sewing for a group. I probably own hundreds of patterns and almost that many books. For me, this book will pay for itself many times over. It isn't a sewing "how to" book and it wouldn't be the first book for a beginner. The reader should be familiar or use other reference books for actual garment construction techniques. I've bought other, less expensive sewing books to learn pattern manipulation and fitting techniques. I put off the purchase of this book, being put off by its price. But, finally! This book is so inspiring and liberating. In just the first 100 pages, I've gotten through the basic patternmaking and dart manipulation. I think I may never have to buy another pattern again ! This is definitely a must have for the serious sewing enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Starting an Accounting Manual.......2003-05-02

This is an excellent grouping of actual accounting procedures. This manual could easily be used to begin your accounting manual. While I am an advocate of doing your own research, you could use these sample accounting procedures as a start. I could see someone reading this manual and then doing their own research and then they could pick and choose which procedures make the best sense. As an author of policy and procedure books that emphasizes research and a simple method of writing, I would suggest this manual as a great place to start for accounting procedures.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW. What a manual........2003-03-11

I couldn't belive the detailed coverage that was provided. The manual comes delivered with a CD and a 3-ring binder. The CD contains Word document files that install straight away with no difficulty. Then you open MS-WORD, choose a procedure to edit, make a few changes and the procedure is ready. I found that in many cases very little editing was required.

The procedures are straight forward. Each one opens with a policy, purpose, scope and responsibility that helps you understand what the procedure is for and why its needed. Then the primary tasks are described with complete paragraphs. I was very pleased with the descriptions so I did not have to edit that much at all. Of course some of the procedures may not be needed. We don't have any inventory but if we did the inventory procedures look like they cover everything including references to the food code for perishable items.

Even so, the coverage for revenue and purchasing are very complete with many references to various federal laws that apply to a procedure. We have had problems with subcontractors in the past and the purchasing procedure coverage for new vendors has been very helpful. A vendor selection checklist is included that is eight pages long. This type of purchasing detail has really helped us improve our vendor process.

The manual also includes a discussion of embezzlement prevention, basic accounting, an excellent index to the whole manual and a sample accounting manual. The accounting manual has helped us to organize the whole accounting department. We only have four people in accounting but the manual really puts the whole department in perspective and provides a framework for understanding every ones roles. The manual is like having a business plan for the accounting department. We feel more organized now and have a place to define our cost accounting, controls, ethics policies, and procedures. The one negative is that it does not cover internal auditing, computer systems, or security measures. We do a lot with computers today and the focus is all acocunting procedures. But I understand that they are coming out with more manual products later this year that will cover computers.

But it hasn't been easy. We knew we couldn't keep doing things the old way and we had to change. We were a little disorganized before with conflicting priorities. The manual forced us to rethink the way we were doing some tasks and change some of our practices. This manual has helped us save a lot of time bringing everything together. It has allowed us to focus the department and set our priorities on what is important. It was a lot easier editing an existing system then facing the prospect of developing something from nothing. Nobody wanted to do it and so it just wasn't getting done. I think that more important to saving some time has been the fact that it has helped us just get it done.

Betty Crocker's Cookbook is 50! In celebration, an updated and expanded ninth edition of this American classic reminds us once again of the value of good old-fashioned comfort food. The original Big Red Cookbook was immediately popular with a postwar audience seeking basic cooking advice and simple recipes that took advantage of several then-new convenience products. The ninth edition remains true to its roots, presenting exemplary instruction, savory mainstream dishes (that still make use of convenience foods and the products of parent company General Mills), and, most notably, standout chapters on baking and dessert specialties. New to this edition, which offers nearly 1,000 recipes, are grilling and vegetarian chapters; up-to-date nutrition information; additional color photos; and contemporary formulas for the likes of Brie with Caramelized Onions, Asiago Bread, and Tandoori Chicken with Chutney.

Instruction was and is the book's strongest suit, and any cook--novice to professional--will benefit from its many how-to features. These include step-by-step directions with photos, tips for kitchen timesaving, and troubleshooting advice. The book also includes several comprehensive glossaries (those on cooking terms and ingredients are particularly good). Standouts among the vast recipe collection, more than 300 of which are designated fast or low fat, include old favorites such as Macaroni and Cheese, Old-Fashioned Baked Beans, and Lemon Chiffon Cake. A few newer ones, such as Sun-Dried Tomato and Olive Bread, also qualify. Published, as ever, in a loose-leaf binder, the book celebrates American culinary know-how, a broad-based tradition of good home cooking, exemplary baking, and the conviction that food and commerce can meld to help people cook easier and eat better. Happy birthday indeed! --Arthur Boehm

4 out of 5 stars One of the ones to read when you're only reading one.......2007-09-23

Betty Crocker Cookbook, 10th edition. It is what it is. It is a decent summary of 21st century American cooking, sufficient to the purposes of anyone who needs to make good meals and keep track of the nutrition involved. With the exception of the occasional (and, frankly, to my mind, unavoidable given the book's corporate affiliation -- I love the stuff myself) use of Bisquick, the book does not lean too heavily on convenience products. There's nutrition information. The selected recipes show a broad base of recipe selection. And at the end of the day, it's all competently done, with lots of useful sidebars and other information.

Beyond that, well, it's underwhelming. To put this in perspective, I have three+ shelves of cookbooks. It's hard for me, a devout cookbook reader for close to two decades, to really offer an objective judgement on something like this, because it's so basic it seems more or less redundant to me. You're not going to find much exotica in here (pad thai and ciabatta bread are about as far-out as it gets), but you will find enough to keep things interesting on a mac-and-cheese table. If you need a basic kitchen reference, it certainly serves that function admirably. There's plenty of pictures for help with techniques, and overall, it's a great first cookbook.

But it's hard to shake the feeling that there's a certain datedness to it -- it is, as I said, very prosaic in its recipe selection. It has the feel of a 1950s cookbook dropped through a timewarp with all of its recipes replaced with currently fashionable selections. What's worse is that it's more or less redundant with books like the Better Homes and Gardens Red Plaid and the America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook -- there isn't a whole lot about any of them to distinguish one from the other. Essentially, you can't go wrong with this book, but you'd be hard-pressed to go wrong with its competition either.

    5 out of 5 stars best cookbook.......2007-09-06

I just bought this for my newly married daughter. I think it's the best cookbook ever on the market. Love the ring binder format but can I offer one suggestion? Make it THREE holes instead so that we can add notebook pages to our books. I usually write a recipe on notebook paper and then put a sleeve over it but finding a hole punch is a hassle.

    4 out of 5 stars A home-cooking classic that's stood the test of time.......2007-08-18

    {Review of 8th edition, written Jan 2005}

Scoff if you must, but this is one of those rare books that has stood the test of time, for 50 years, endless reprintings, multiple generations of cooks, and (now) 9 editions. I've actually worn out my 8th edition copy, and am planning on buying the new 9th edition.

This is a simple, easy to use, easy to read, well organized, and concisely laid out book, and it's chock full of helpful pictures and step by step instructions for cooks of all levels ... from nervous novices to hardened professionals.

Although by no means encyclopedic in it's depth, it covers a surprising amount of territory in simple and easy to follow detail.

It's earned a berth in the most heavily contested spot for books in my house ... the top of my refrigerator. I have dozens of other books on food and wine elsewhere in my house, but only my 15 most heavily used & dog-eared books have earned a prized berth in my kitchen's "culinary speed rack". High praise.

    NITS:

    (1) The recommended temperatures in the cooking charts all err on the side of excessive safety, in deference USDA recommendations. Experienced cooks who value flavor and perfect doneness above lockstep homage to USDA regulations (and corporate fears of getting sued) can, IMNSHO, shave 5-10F off most of the listed finishng temperatures for most varieties of meat (particularly red). Modern pork, in particular, is far safer than it used to be, and is routinely overdone by most home cooks. Let experience and additional reading be your guide. {obiwan voiceover: "Use the force, Luke"} Some of the temperature charts are overly convervative, and are heavily weighted towards overdoneness.

    (2) The spiral-binding & glossy pages of this book make it spill resistant, and easy to lay open on countertops and bookstands ... but I'd still prefer a hardcover edition, for improved durability. But that's just me.

First published in 1950, Betty Crocker's Picture Cook Book is now reprinted in all its old-fashioned glory. Betty immerses you in a time when women were homemakers, cakes had at least two layers, and salad was iceberg lettuce. You may hesitate to recreate what your mother or grandmother probably cooked--if so, consider that back then we ate simply, in the days before the word foodie was invented. Many of the recipes suit today's harried lifestyle, as you see in Six Layer Dinner, combining eight cups of vegetables with a pound of ground meat, and Dainty Tea Brownies topped with colorful chopped pistachios.

Hundreds of black-and-white photos, animated drawings, and quaint color spreads of prepared dishes aid you in using the recipes. Beginners learn how to measure ingredients, choose the best economical cuts of meat, and cut up round and sheet cakes for serving. There is even a section on how to set the table. This loose-leaf book contains enough recipes to fill a 12-page, double-column index. Best of all, perhaps, is the "Shortcut" section, where useful tips include cleaning a grater of cheese residue by rubbing it with a piece of stale bread. These are interspersed with 15 ways to recuperate from overwork. One suggestion is to lie down on the kitchen floor on your back and relax for three to five minutes. Still a good idea, though few people have a kitchen large enough to try this. --Dana Jacobi
