Originally published in 1957, The Doubtful Guest serves as a prime example of the beauty, eccentricity, and brilliance of Edward Gorey's work. If the book was read aloud without revealing the accompanying black-and-white drawings, you might guess the tale came from the quirky genius of Dr. Seuss. The rhyming couplets and nonsensical verse (about an even more nonsensical creature) feel familiar, but in Gorey's skilled hands, the experience becomes altogether new.

The doubtful guest shows up unannounced and unwelcome, yet its presence is accepted after only a brief interlude of screaming. The staid, pale, Victorian inhabitants of the mansion alternately stare and glare at the doubtful guest as it tears out whole chapters from books, peels the soles of its white canvas shoes, and broods while lying on the floor ("inconveniently close to the drawing-room door"). Strangely, or rather, typically, as this is a Gorey book, the stymied occupants never ask the guest to leave--and in 17 years it has still "shown no intention of going away." Maintaining a matter-of-fact tone in spite of true oddity is pure, delicious Gorey, and his trademark drawings are not to be missed. The ghostly, stark, and undeniably amusing illustrations make The Doubtful Guest an entrancing tale in which reserved, insular lives meet with the unexpected and bizarre. (Ages 5 and older)

Book Description

“An artist and writer of genius” (New Yorker) gives us a small-format edition of one of his favorite tales-a deliciously twisted comedy of manners.

2 out of 5 stars My daughter cried........2007-08-03

I picked up a copy of the Doubtful Guest because I heard Steven Speilberg optioned the rights to turn this into a movie. Not sure how he's going to do it, because there really isn't a story to tell. It's about a weird-looking penguin that shows up at a house and doesn't leave. Big whoop. I love the art. I like the whole idea of the story. And I'm sure at the time, it was what children's book critics would consider 'avant-garde' and a bit dark. But, it just didn't do it for me. I read it to my daughter. She was so angry that she grabbed the book out of my hands, took it over to the fireplace and threw into the fire. Then she went PFFFTHTTPT! Whatever that means! Maybe she was tipsy on the expired-date cow's milk she was drinking. Maybe it was because she was teething. Maybe it was because she's only a year old, but she didn't like it at all. Would I tell someone else to buy this book? Not really. Although, on a personal note, I may check out more of Gorey's work. This guy may have been on to something.

A macabre classic. Perfect for any collection. Adds a little whimsy to any day you open the cover.

5 out of 5 stars A Gorey story for kids and adults.......2006-03-18

Edward Gorey's humor is delightfully absurd. Although this particular tale is unlike any other Gorey story, the humor and pen & ink illustrations are beautifully done and unmistakably Gorey.

5 out of 5 stars "It Betrayed A Great Liking For Peering Up Flues...".......2005-01-13

This is my single favorite Edward Gorey book, partially because of the amusing couplets it is written in, but mostly because of the appearance of the guest himself, which never ceases to amuse me. The concept of a strange creature who mysteriously visits and decides to stay (seventeen years) while exercising odd whims (like fits in which he removes all towels from the bath or hiding inside a soup tureen) is particularly suited to Gorey's odd brand of humor (although it is not one of his more unusual books, by any stretch of the imagination.)

I have liked Edward Gorey since I was in my teens, and still find him as unique and entertaining as ever. This is my very favorite Gorey book, and would make an excellent introduction to one of the oddest cartoonists of the twentieth century.

You will not be doubting this book as a guest on your shelf. The Doubtful Guest is a Gorey masterpiece in all its pawky nature. If you find that you are fond of it, you might drop it in the pond, as the doubtful guest does to things it's fond of: "It would carry off objects of which it grew fond, And protect them by dropping them into the pond." You'll surely be all wet if you do, because you'll want to fetch it out for a read quite often.

"A is for Amy who fell down the stairs. B is for Basil assaulted by bears. C is for Clara who wasted away. D is for Desmond thrown out of a sleigh..." The rhyming couplets of this grim abecedarian are familiar, of course, to devotees of macabre humor, but the darkly crosshatched drawings are (as Poe put it) "the soul of the plot." Several years went by during which The Gashlycrumb Tinies: Or, After the Outing was not available in a small hardcover edition like this one, which is the true format for Edward Gorey's specialty, the adult picture book. (For those who wish to share the gloom there's a 10-copy assortment with The Curious Sofa.)

Book Description

A new, small-format edition of one of Gorey’s “dark masterpieces of surreal morality” (Vanity Fair) - a witty, disquieting journey through the alphabet.

3 out of 5 stars morbid alphabet.......2007-07-27

disguised as a children's read, this little book shows all the ways little people could die, from A to Z.
I expected the artwork to look like the cover page but they are all black and white. He uses pen for all the illustrations, achieving many values and textures with lines, stripes, various patterns and predominately crosshatching. It's cute.

5 out of 5 stars Best use of the word "ennui".......2007-07-01

A twisted, strange, lovely alphabet that shows Edward Gorey at his macabre best. I give one of these books to every friend I meet who understands my own bizarre sense of humor. Edward Gorey rules!

5 out of 5 stars Now don't get me wrong...........2007-06-07

I like all of Gorey's work. The stories are simply worded and have a feeling of every word in its place. The art at a first glance also seems rather simple in an intriguing way, the you look closer and the tiny lines drag you in the rest of the way.

I think for many people, Edward Gorey is a love him or hate him thing. You either find it very amusing or just plain sickening nonsense. I happen to be of the former. I do have some trouble with some of his stories (that dang statue book...) because I find them somewhat....pointless. This book, however, is one of the more comprehensible, if also one of the most simple in premise.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a bit of "dark humor" now and again. But, really, unless your kid is pretty tough, don't read it as a bedtime story until they are old enough to really understand that it's not real. If you must introduce them to Gorey at a young and tender age, go pick up a copy of The Epiplectic Bicycle (My other favorite E.G. book) or one of his more nonsensical books. Don't give your kid nightmares.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to pen and ink.......2006-01-21

As a non-artist who's trying to learn to be an artist, this book really helped me find a medium that worked for me, and no other book has inspired me to get to work learning to draw.

You'll need some experience sketching with pencil to make most of the drawings work, but the great pen-and-ink art in this book has inspired me to get better drawing with pencil.

Note that online auction sites usually have great deals on sets of Rapidograph pens. Don't pay full price!

I wish I had had this book years ago. It would have saved me lots of mistakes and given me the courage to pursue my passion sooner.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Beginners.......2004-03-14

This is an awesome book, especially for those just learning to draw with ink. It has hand control exercises and shows all the basic strokes. A great feature of the book is the progessive projects. And the tips about using your fine technical pen are very helpful. Claudia Nice's work is beautiful. This book makes it simple and rewarding to pick up a pen.

4 out of 5 stars Drawing in Pen & Ink (First Step Series).......2000-06-16

I borrowed this book from the library and used it so extensively for three weeks that I decided to buy my own copy. The book contains information on tools and techniques with instructions and lessons for both beginners and more accomplished artists. I feel it is a good reference that I will go back to again and again.

Having picked up a drawing pen after many long years (actually my last drawing instrument was a made by Crayola!) I found this book to be very helpful in learning the basics, fiding materials, and simply getting started. I have found it worth every cent I paid for it.

Book Description

This latest collection displays in glorious abundance the offbeat characters and droll humor of Edward Gorey. Figbash is acrobatic, topiaries are tragic, hippopotami are admonitory, and galoshes are remorseful in this celebra- tion of a unique talent that never fails to delight, amuse, and confound.
Amphigorey Again contains previously uncollected work and two unpublished stories—"The Izzard Book," a quirky riff on the letter Z , and "La Malle Saignante," a bilingual homage to early French silent serial movies. Rough sketches and unfin- ished panels show an ironic and singular mind at work.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Edward Gorey does it again.......2007-09-18

There's only one master of the macabre. Edward Gorey. This is a fantastic collection for those who find everything he did captivating and a joy to read. I love this. Hunker down with this tome in the Fall.

4 out of 5 stars Distant, mysterious, and disjoint.......2007-09-08

If that description matches something enjoyable, it has to be Edward Gorey's work. This poshumous collection proves that even death can't stop a creative mind of his kind.

Like the other Aphigorey collections, this presents over two dozen short pieces. Some, like "Cat[e]gory", arrive wordless, leaving the reader to assign meaning. Others, including "The Deadly Blotter" and "The Izzard Book," involve wordplay of some kind. In others, "The Admonitory Hippopotamus" in particular, the words seem to clutch theirs meanings closely as they fly by, without dropping those meanings where the reader can find them.

But, even more than his stories (if the term 'story' in fact applies), Gorey's fame derives from his art. Fans of public television's "Mystery" know his style, whether or not they know that they know it: heavily textured pen drawings, people gazing off to the place where they might remember something terribly important, and amorphous little animals doing something mysterious and just a little desperate.

This collection includes an unfinished piece, showing some of the progression from Gorey's pencil sketches to his nervous, distracted cartoons. It's a wonderful addition, and possibly the last, to any collection of this cult-favorite illustrator's work.

Amphigorey Again is a wonderful addition to the now classic Amphigorey series (the others being Amphigorey, Amphigorey Too and Amphigorey Also).
Said that this fourth volume is by far the weakest, but that's not to
say it's bad (remember we're not talking about hacks):Gorey in his less inspired moments is still worth buying.
There are a number of very short pieces here as well as some wonderful ilustrations but the most interesting pieces are the lenghty ones, even
though some of them seems like an incomplete draft.
Amphigorey Again is not the best introduction for those who wants to
immerse for the first time in Gorey's demented genius but if you are a
a Gorey addict this volume is ABSOLUTELY INDISPENSABLE.

5 out of 5 stars Gorey just gets Better and Better.......2007-01-12

Surely this could not be the last of Gorey whose illustrations highlight television shows, books, and stories better than any other weird, offbeat or just plain strange artist.

5 out of 5 stars Yet Another Amphigory.......2006-12-26

The two most pressing questions I had about this book were 1) was it "new" (not previously published) work, and 2) how incomplete is the art.

The answers are 1) Yes it is all new work and 2) very few of the pieces are sketchy or incomplete.

I am very pleased with this volume. It completes my collection of all four of the Amphigory volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Just had to add my own 5-star..........2007-05-07

This book is all that the other reviewers say it is. The text is clear and informative, if dated... but the illustrations! The illustrations are worth the price of the book. Even just the basic exercise illustrations in the first part of the book are beautiful, and demonstrate what is possible with this medium.

I have to admit, I'm a Rapidograph person (and if you are too, please see The Technical Pen in addition to this book) rather than a flexible nib person, but the lessons and examples in Guptill's book are priceless anyway.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A good reference book.......2007-02-18

The information provided in this book is very comprehensive. There is a lot of sections on pen rendering used in the past and the types of materials used. But today, in the 21st century, most artists prefer the technical pen to that of the quill. All the drawings presented in the book are in black and white. I wish there are some in colour inks and combination with water-colours. I also wish it includes drawings of present day pen artists with their masterpieces. All in all, it is a good reference book.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular examples of pen technique........2007-02-07

A wonderful discussion of pen and ink rendering. This has become somewhat of a lost art, but it is very challenging and this book provides guidance about techniques and materials, and contains superb examples of finished work. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Pen and ink review.......2007-02-03

I had seen this book at a friend's home in it's original form. I read some of it then, and had been searching for the original for some time. But, having now obtained this anniversary edition and read it from cover to cover I find this to be every bit as good as I had anticipated it to be.

The book starts with a basic material list and is a bit outdated in its suggestions for pens and inks, as these have moved on in the past sixty years. But the techniques remain the same and the author takes you from very basic skills and suggestions through many different techniques finishing with quite sophisticated ideas and designs.

I would recommend theis book for both the beginner and the serious and practised artist.

Book Description

Using picture after picture (and handwritten instructions, for a more intimate feel), Claudia Nice teaches artists how to use dots, fine lines, brush strokes, black & white and color-a mixture of mediums and techniques to create the gleaming transparency of glass, rolling surf and ocean waves, the warmth of brick and adobe, rainbows that glimmer, sunrises and sunsets that glow, dramatic wood grain, smoothed driftwood, foliage of distant trees, intricate leaf textures, the woven texture of basketry, lifelike animal hair and dozens of other textures!

Artists will learn how to use such diverse materials as technical pens, paint brushes, colored inks and liquid acrylics, along with ways to alter and combine ink and watercolor for exciting texturing effects.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference.......2007-03-07

I like alot of the techniques in the book. Basically that would be why I use the book. Sometimes I go back to the book to just refresh my memory. I have a few books I refer to, and it is nice to have a variety so that I can always come up with something new and creative in my own art.

5 out of 5 stars Great teaching techniques.......2006-10-18

If you really want to learn how to use pen & ink along with watercolor than this is the book you need. She shows great detail and helps the artist, either beginner or advanced, how to improve on their paintings.

5 out of 5 stars Nice, but material is duplicated in another of her books..........2004-06-07

This is an excellent book... IF you don't already own "Painting with Watercolor, Pen and Ink" by Claudia Nice. The material in this book is entirely duplicated in the "Painting with..." except for the last chaper called "Fur and Feathers". Please do not buy this book if you already own a copy of "Painting with Watercolor, Pen and Ink". I did and was disappointed that there was only one chapter of new material in this book.

Now, if you own the other book "Painting Nature in Pen & Ink with Watercolor" then I highly recommend this book as it has subject matter that was not covered in the "Painting Nature..." book.

If you don't own any of her books, then buy the "Painting with Watercolor Pen and Ink" ISBN 158180265X because it completely combines the material in both "Creating Textures..." and "Painting Nature..." books.

5 out of 5 stars New title for this excellent book........2004-05-29

I recently checked this book out from the library and found it to be an excellent resource for me, a student new to these media. I enjoyed the book and decided to purchase it. Amazon lists the book as out of print. Indeed this title is out of print. However, don't despair. This book has been re-released under the new title "Painting with Watercolor, Pen and Ink."

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected or wanted.......2004-02-27

A better title would have been, "Creating Textures in Pen & Ink, Enhanced with Watercolor." 75% of each texture comes down to "make a detailed ink drawing". The other 25% is enhancing that ink drawing with watercolor. The pen & ink predominates everywhere. If this is the style of drawing you desire (e.g., detailed drawings where pen&ink predominates), then you will probably give this book 4 to 5 stars. I was looking for watercolor texture techniques and was disapointed.

With that said, the drawings are very well executed and the instruction quality moderate. The author relies too heavily on step-by-step examples as a teaching tool. The addition of color greatly enhances the pen & ink drawings, with spectacular results.

Of the 15 or so art instruction books I've bought over the last few months, this is one of my favorites. This is ironic, since I originally was turned off somewhat by the subject matter and/or style of many of the works inside (nothing wrong with it, just not my particular cup-o-tea).

However, on deeper consideration I realized that Simmons offers really great instruction on the use of technical pen, so who cares whether one likes the artwork itself. Take for example the "monk" drawing that is depicted on the cover. I don't care for the drawing at all, no matter how it's rendered. However, this drawing is used to demonstrate a couple dozen rendering options, and these renderings are a great teaching tool.

Simmons spends plenty of time on the technical details of using a technical pen for both tight and loose rendering, and that's what makes this book great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-11-12

Excellent to see a good variety of different techniques. Great step-by-step tutorial. I found new ways to render lots of different textures. A must-have!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2005-06-24

The book is just plain awesome. Besides taking the time to explain how to care for the technical pen, how to do the different strokes, and what type of beginner mistakes to be aware of, the artwork is the best pen work I've ever seen. If you work with pen and ink, or even if you don't, you will love this book!

5 out of 5 stars highly recommend.......2004-02-11

Very helpful. When I bought this book I hadn't used a technical pen in over 12 years (since high school art class). So, I needed some thorough instruction on techniques and materials. I am glad that this is the book that I got. It covers a wide variety of different strokes and includes many examples of how they can be used. The color stuff is pretty cool too.
I looked at many other books on the technical pen. This is the best one that I found which is devoted to tech pen work. (Other books had chapters devoted to using ink with brushes and metal nibs - which is also cool if your interested). If you are looking for a book full of info on just the tech pen though, then I would highly recommend this one.
It was written in the early 90's, so the one thing I found is that there are some inks available at my local art store that probably didn't exist back in 1990. Therefore, the book doesn't have any information on them.
The author seems to have a preference for the Kohinoor Rapidograph brand pens, which are still widely available today and work great. The early portion of the book has very detailed information on filling, cleaning , and maintaining the pens. It is very helpful and much more detailed then the instructions that the Kohinoor pens come with.
Great choice!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2003-05-12

If you love the subject of pen & ink, you'll no doubt love this book. It contains one of the most thorough collection of basic pen strokes, and an impressive variety of styles: from simple portraits to highly elaborate fantasy art. One of my favorite parts is showing how a drawing shall look incorporating a variety of different pen strokes with each of 24 renderings. This chapter concludes with a reproducable sketch that can be used by the student to explore the exercises. A book replete with examples and exercises. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-07-15

This is an outstanding book. The author goes into detail on how she creates the effects in her illustrations. Many of her ideas and techniques can be carried over into other subject material. This was one of the best art instruction books I have purchased in regards to watercolor and ink. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for insight on creating wonderful textures with this media. However, I would suggest reading reviews of the author's other books to select the subject matter you like best before deciding which one to get because there is apparently some overlap.

A broad yet relatively complete technical foray into the specialized domain of printing inks. For inkies I find this book is most useful to shore up on ink types you are not most familiar with. Not too technical. A must for those involved in formulating inks.
