4 out of 5 stars More than just decoration.......2007-01-19

This book is the most comprehensive henna book I've come across! I loved learning about the historical and cultural significance of mehndi. The pictures are gorgeous!

5 out of 5 stars So much more then a how to book..........2006-06-16

This book is just right for anyone, like me, who is just starting out on their journey with the art of mehndi (or henna.) The instructions are straight-forward with everythingfrom mixing your own henna to basic and complex designs and an excellent resource guide in the back. The images throughout are beautiful and somehow inspirational. Not only all that, but the book gives history on henna as well as the a look into the spiritual nature of the craft. I love how Loretta Roome dives into the symbolism found in mehndi from many countries. It is just such a wonderful book, I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious Art of Henna.......2006-03-16

As a teacher I appreciate this book as a wonderful tool for beginners as well as the advanced. It gives amazing pictures to study, recipes to follow, and also vast facts and deep educational bytes to take away from this craft. Henna is so old of an art form people don't really realize. Henna has been a part of many faiths. Jewish, Egyptian, Hindi, and many more. With it's various meanings and religious symbolism. Very rich material for everyone to learn from. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am thrilled that my children have found it fascinating too. They are 10 and 11 years old too! We love and adore Henna!! Great book. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Balanced and Beautiful.......2004-03-05

"Mehndi: The Timeless Art of Henna Painting" is a balance between sumptous picture book and inspirational, well-informed text. I find Roome's book to be one that I frequently pick up for inspiration, ideas or quiet reflection. "Mehndi: The Timeless Art of Henna Painting" is a worth while book to purchase whether or not you want a mehndi tattoo because of the beauty, magic and mystery contained within its pages.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2002-09-30

"Mehndi" is a great beginners book. It's not quite what we were looking for though. It does have some really nice designs, but I think it has more text than we were hoping for. It's informative for those looking to learn about the art and tradition. This book gives advice about mixing your own henna paste. I give it 5 stars because all in all it's a wonderful book, informative, and the pictures are clear.

Book Description

For thousands of years the art of henna `tattoos' has been one of the best kept secrets of the Eastern world--recently `discovered' by rock stars, super models like Naomi Campbell, and celebrities Demi Moore and Liv Tyler. Now, you can make your next entrance more eye-catching: try a band around your upper arm, or a fluttering pattern along your waist. This kit will commence your initiation into the mysteries of the ancient practice of henna adornment, a safe, non-permanent, beautiful art form. Each kit contains two packets of henna powder with application cones to allow you to create intricate designs, Mehlabiya oil capsules and six transfer sheets of ancient and contemporary patterns to guide you.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very well put together.......2006-02-17

I have played with Henna before, and was looking for a good kit with a better explanation, history, and some insight as to how to shop for Henna products.

The kit comes with 2 cones of powder, 2 liquid mixtures and 1 bottle of oil(and some other stuff, including some cool designs that are discussed in detail in the book). After mixing the first batch, I realized it was too thick. No problem, just add fresh lemon juice until you have a smooth mixture that flows easily through the cone. The quality is great for beginners to play with and I found the cone to be well designed and easy to use.

The real plus for this product is the book that comes with it. Aileen is obviously very talented and someone for anyone who enjoys this art to aspire to. Her book is exquisite in all aspects, from the art history to the application explanations, from her designs to the photography, and from the quality of printing to her expert selection of models(their skin was flawless). I found exactly the info I was looking for.

Well worth the money I paid and an excellent addition to my growing library of Henna/Mehndi/Indigo Art. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Buying for the second time.......2004-06-07

I liked this kit so much last summer that I'm purchased another for this summer. The amount of henna in the kit looks small, but as they say...a little goes a long way. I used it weekly on my ankle for about 6 months. I still have some left and plan to use that for at least another month. I always get compliments on my henna tattoos.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2003-02-14

I was disappointed with the amount of henna & few transfers. I also wish the kit had a bottle with an applicator tip instead of it being it that little baggie thing. But the book is very pretty, as someone else said.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-09-07

A big group of friends and I tried out this kit together and we had wonderful results. The henna went a very long way, much more so than I had expected. We had to mix a little water into the cones because they were a little too thick, but the rest of it worked great. You will want to reenforce the sides of the cones with tape before you start, because no matter what the seams (they are shaped zip lock bags) eventually give with the force of pushing the henna though the cone. We all had wonderful, dark orange results two and a half hours later. Leave the henna on longer than the author suggests, until it is mostly flaking off by itself (say 2 and a half to 3 hours).
Good luck!

2 out of 5 stars Not impressive, overall..........2000-06-12

Although the book is very pretty, and contains some really nice designs, the henna kit was extremely disappointing. I followed the directions to a tee, and got very disappointing results as did all but one of my friends at my Henna party. Not recommended.

Book Description

Henna body decoration is generally practiced on festive occasions, religious ceremonies, most notably, weddings. In all cultures that practice henna painting it is the hands and feet that are commonly decorated; for weddings the designs can extend onto the arms and legs. Design motifs vary from culture to culture. For instance, North African Henna Designs tend to be geometric or composed from highly stylized flowers. Indian designs are usually drawn within a square, rectangle or circle which is then surrounded by a myriad of smaller patterns that cover the hands and lower arms, the feet and ankles. Motifs are taken from a vast Indian decorative vocabulary: Moghul flowers, Paisly patters, complicated tendril designs, stars, vines, spirals, leaves, checkerboards, water drops and waves.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars pretty good.........2007-08-13

I really found this book useful because not only did it have plenty of designs to choose from, but also there was a section which explained the history of Mendhi. Although the history section was not as detailed as I would have liked, I found the designs to be very interesting. All the patterns and artwork displayed in the book are phenominal and it gave me plenty of good ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome Design Book!!.......2007-03-20

I have done alot of research on mehndi design and this book is, so far, the best I've come across. It provides the more intricate traditional patterns as well as abstract floral and tribal design. I was very happy with this purchase!

5 out of 5 stars great book for henna designs.......2005-08-02

This book has a ton of great henna designs for hands, feet, and body. Other henna books I've seen have better descriptions about the history of henna, but if you want designs to actually try out, this is the best book.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Information ranges from out of date to plain wrong........2004-06-18

I was extremely disappointed with this book. The information about historical origins and traditions is sometimes correct, but only sometimes. The art is awful. I would expect this sort of design work from someone who was trying henna for the first time, not a self-proclaimed expert. The worst part for me, however, is the recipe given. For most of the world, the ingredients listed will actually hinder the dye's ability to stain. At first I wondered why someone would print something designed to fail- then I remembered that the author also sells pre-measured henna kits for those that can't mix their own successfully. Coincidence?
You can get better information, recipes, art pictures, and supplies for free on the Internet. Why pay for bad advice?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Buy for a beginner!.......2003-09-01

This book is a friendly, easy read. For the beginner with no experience, it will make you feel comfortable. It offers advice on the history of a design, the meaning, and gives a step by step instruction on some of the more complicated looking designs. The book also offers practice exercises for those who feel they can't draw mehndi designs.
All in all, it's a good book for a beginner.

4 out of 5 stars A well designed book.......2003-02-24

A few years ago, I had a dragon painted on my arm in henna, and after seeing this book in a shop, I thought it'd be interesting to learn more about it, and perhaps give it a go myself. I've not given it a go yet, as henna plants are difficult to locate in this small town, but I feel it's given me a fair background to start with.

The book begins with a short history lesson on the origin and uses of the plant and artform. Maps, pictures of the plant and practical applications are interspersed throughout the history and cultural lesson.

Indeed, the book is profusly illustrated with many wonderous designs all over the body, focusing mainly on the hands and feet, but there are many designs shown on the arms, chest, belly and back, ranging from very simplistic to extremely complex, both modern and traditional designs from various cultures which use henna art religious and celebratory occasions.

Easy to follow instructions are given on harvesting and preparing the plant for use in an easy to make recipie for the paste used to dye the skin, as wells as detailed explinations and diagrams for creation of an applicator, though a store-bought one with a metal tip is recommended, especially for finer, more detailed designs.

There are even excercises and techniques listed to help you along before you begin, and over 30 designs and symbols (some with short descriptions of their meaning) with instructions on how to proceed to create some of the beautiful designs illustrated, and application and creation techniques. I would have appreciated a more detailed explaination for the symbols and how they're used in the given culture, but the descriptions are short and superficial.

At the rear of the book, there are a few studios listed in the States where you can have henna applied, as well as a short bibliography and some design books suggested for reference, as well as an index and short author biography.

A well designed book, I love the pictures, as natural henna only comes in a few shades of brown or red, the black and white pictures don't take away much. If you're interested in giving mehndi a go, this book could give you an excellent start.

5 out of 5 stars great little book.......2002-09-30

This book has good information for those who want to learn about mehndi. The pictures and illustrations are clear. We haven't tried their version of the recipe (for the paste). I think this is a great book for any level mehndi artist.

3 out of 5 stars For a good over veiw.......2002-06-21

For anyone who has experimented in henna before this book just reteaches the basics. It has a very good and helpful section on the history of henna, some things I'd never read before. For anyone who has had little exposure to henna this is a great book to start with. For those who are looking for more complex design ideas there are more helpful books. Again the basic helpful tips are a good place to start.

    Book Description

A stunning guide to the ultimate fashion statement by the henna body painter to the stars.

Mehndi, the ancient Indian art of henna design, is the hottest accessory sported by today's fashion world. Madonna made it famous in her Ray of Light videos; Liv Tyler showed it off on the cover of Vanity Fair; and Naomi Campbell flashed it on the catwalk. Now, Sumita Batra, mehndi artist to the stars, brings the definitive guide to this 3,000-year-old art form of body painting.

Among her many clients is Madonna, who asked Sumita Batra to decorate her hands and face for the 1998 MTV Video Awards ceremony. The Art of Mehndi delves into the history and symbolism of the art as well as mehndi in the fashion world of the 90s, and offers practical instruction on how to make and apply henna paste. More than 30 original designs, 125 color photographs, and 150 line drawings make this the must-have guide for both the fashion conscious and the spiritually conscious.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2002-09-08

This is a great book. There are plenty of illustrations to copy or practice with. She mentions celebrities that have had mehndi, and provides pictures of them. The recipes are good. We use the "quickie" recipe, and my tattoos come out rich and dark. Give it a try if you want to add to your design collection. (My book has a different cover.)

    4 out of 5 stars Great pictures.......2002-09-04

I loved all the pictures in this book. I got some good ideas for designs but I could have done without the bindi section.

4 out of 5 stars Rock stars and coffee tables.......2000-07-12

Pros: This book is beautifully constructed and will impress anyone interested in mehndi, especially those looking for images of famous current personas who currently adorn the work of prolific artists like Batra. Furthermore, Ms. Batra gives detailed step-by-step instructions in drawing a variety of different mehndi designs - you don't find this step by step stuff in too many books.

Cons: While this books works well on the coffee table and for the ineperienced artist who wants to learn how to draw henna and understand the technique of application, it doesn't give you too many historical details about henna or insight into the symbolism. The book falls into the trap of being too modern, too sugar-coated, and too Hollywood-oriented -- beautiful stars sport henna in all of its pictures, as if the author wants you to notice the people than the art they are wearing.

Despite these shortcomings, this book has a distinct purpose to cater to people interested in mehndi in its popular form, and it succeeds quite well. As I mentioned before, the pictures and the construction are both beautiful. Also, Sumitra's designs gave me ideas for my own.

4 out of 5 stars The most color photos in one book!.......2000-03-25

Oh, yeah! Don't let too many of your friends look at this book or it might mysteriously dissappear! For those wanting henna designs for personal use or business, this book is ALWAYS the one people are drawn to. If you take it with you on too many henna appointments, it WILL get worn out. The photos are fabulous, and the designs are neat and clean. Not to say that they are all simple, NO! There are some really frilly Indian hardcore designs, that if you are a beginner, will look like an impossibility. BUT, the methods and techniques described in this book give anyone a clear knowledge of the application of henna, it's only the practice you need to do the really crazy designs! Many celebrity and model photos, as well as some great ideas for using mehndi designs with body paint for more instant gratification.

4 out of 5 stars Nearly Best on the Market for Mehndi.......2000-01-07

I have purchased nearly every book in English on the subject of mehndi and found this book to be the best for "showing" actual mehndi which anyone can produce given a little effort. The Art of Mehndi is very short on history. It makes a transition into the "modern" infatuation with it and bindis and other Indian cultural signafiers. Though the text may be limited at times and information just as limited, it does present incredible pictures of mehndi on numerous models and numerous styles. The best book for seeing actual designs on people and not flat 2-D designs. Well worth the money compared to other mehndi books on the market. If you want history in depth grab a copy of "Mehndi : The Timeless Art of Henna Painting" by Loretta Roome it contains all the indepth history of mehndi and a good chapter on symbolism.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended reading for body painting enthusiasts........2000-09-04

The Art of Mehndi provides a basic primer on the art of Mehndi body painting, from lists of needed supplies to instructions on how to make your own henna paste for producing them. Sample designs and tips on original designs are geared to young adult audiences but many an adult interested in body painting will find this excellent.

4 out of 5 stars good basics for young readers.......2000-06-18

A good overview for young readers that has a little bit about the history of Mehndi, plus the how-to in an easy to understand format. It has a few design ideas, some good "recipes" and resources for materials. It also has reminders to ask permission from parents. Overall, a fun activity book that encourages creativity. Adults might enjoy it too, especially at such a reasonable price!
