For interior designers and specifiers.
Customer Reviews:
Very Poorly Written.......2006-08-22
This book is very poorly written. It also does not adequately discuss estimating materials.
Broad Outlook on Interior Products.......2000-06-21
This book is a good reference for anyone who is currently designing or building a luxury home, but for a general education on construction interiors, this is not the book. There are many references to the latest products, which include both color and feature description that will be quickly outdated. Most of the discussion centers around materials that would be used in an affluent home rather than your typical family residence, and product descriptions focus on the unique product, not the typical. Dimensions for comfortable clearance and layout hints are useful for residential layout, but the commercial references are very limited.
Book Description
Unprecedented shifts in the age distribution and diversity of the global labour pool are underway
Within the decade, as the massive boomer generation begins to retire and fewer skilled workers are available to replace them, companies in industrialized markets will face a labour shortage and brain drain of dramatic proportions.
Ken Dychtwald, Tamara Erickson, and Robert Morison argue that companies ignore these shifts at great peril. Survival will depend on redefining retirement and transforming management and human resource practices to attract, accommodate, and retain workers of all ages and backgrounds.
Based on decades of groundbreaking research and study, the authors present innovative and actionable management techniques for leveraging the knowledge of mature workers, reengaging disillusioned mid-career workers, and attracting and retaining talented younger workers.
This timely book will help organizations sustain their competitive edge in tomorrow’s inevitably tighter labour markets.
Customer Reviews:
Great insight.......2007-05-14
Ken Dychtwald covers greatly the changes in today's workforce. From diversity to age, it all effects the shortage of skills and talent. This is a great book for anyone who owns, manages or plans on opening a small business.

"Where did all the good ones go?".......2006-09-27
In essence, the "workforce crisis" to which the title refers results from an insufficiency of talented, skilled, and principled people at a time when competition for them has never been more intense than it is now...and "the coming shortage" of them is certain to increase in months and years ahead. In the first two Parts of this volume, the authors explain how this "brain drain" threatens organizational performance, why a new workforce stategy is needed, why older workers (ages 55+) comprise "the biggest untapped resource" and how to optimize their services, why and how the "boomer bottleneck" disrupts productibity, how to rekindle employees' passion for work, why the best of the younger workers (ages 18-34) keep leaving, and how to connect with them. Then in Parts III and IV, they explain why flexible work arrangements are needed and how to make them work, why continuous education matters and how to make it pay off, why "variety will rule" and how to leverage it, how to evaluate the talent and skills of the current workforce and anticipate their needs, and finally, how to formulate and then implement strategies by which to avert a workforce crisis.
Readers will greatly appreciate the authors' no-nonsense approach to real-world issues. Their observations are based on extensive research and their recommendations are both practical and do-able. The provision of various case studies is a substantial value-added benefit. It is instructive to see how various organizations have either avoided or satisrfactorily resolved the "workforce crisis" each faced. There are two other books which should be read in combinbation with this one: Leigh Branham`s The 7 Hidden Reasons Employees Leave: How to Recognize the Subtle Signs and Act Before It's Too Late and Bradford Smart's Topgrading: How Leading Companies Win by Hiring, Coaching, and Keeping the Best People (Revised and Updated Edition).
Find a Parade, Jump in Front, Declare Yourself Grand Marshall.......2006-09-12
The "research" that the authors quote is their own but their "findings" are nothing more than information that has been reported ad nauseum in journal articles and news stories over the past several years. The book could have been condensed drastically without losing any of the points. The last 25% of the book is a "discussion guide" that may be more valuable than the guts of the book.
Borrow this one from the library.
Thought provoking book........2006-08-04
Good analysis of the problem and some suggestions for solutions. Employers are going to have to use older workers or go without in the near term. Raises some real questions about the importance of "guest workers" to the continued success of our economy. The labor has to come from somewhere.
An inspirational vision for any manager looking at the long-term picture.......2006-06-20
WORKFORCE CRISIS: HOW TO BEAT THE COMING SHORTAGE OF SKILLS AND TALENT predicts a crisis in the workplace as the huge boomer generation requires and leaves less experience holding the bag in the workplace. Companies must rethink their workforce management and attract and retain works of all ages, as a result. Decades of research have culled these strategies for reorganization in WORKFORCE CRISIS, which will prove an inspirational vision for any manager looking at the long-term picture.

Customer Reviews:
Well worth the money........2006-05-21
I own the 4th edition. I had to make a comment after amazon recommended the 5th.
This is a great book. Originally, i was PO'ed at the price. Especially when you get it and its quite thin compared to many texts. I had to get it for APICS.
Once you start reading it you find it cuts through all waste. This is not a padded book. It explains concepts in a brief, direct manner. Most importantly it communicates clearly. Its like a well written executive summary of the field of materials management. There is enough detail for practitioners.
I have almost all texts in the recommended reading of APICS. This is probably my favorite. The utility you will get per unit of time reading this is huge.
Basic Supply Chain.......2006-03-14
This book has an easy written language and is very good for beginners in the Supply Chain Management Area.
Best book to understand manufacturing process.......2006-02-01
This is one of the best books I have come across which explains the basics of Manufacturing.
A good textbook.......2005-11-17
This book covers the basics of material management and goes into some quantitative detail as well. It is very well written and its lucid style is perfect for a beginner to get a grasp on the subject.
The author clearly and logically explains the concepts of production planning, master production schedule, MRP, Production and activity control, purchasing, inventory management, forcasting, demand planning and much more.
The book also has an abundance of examples and exercises for the student to work through. It makes a good read as a beginner's textbook - but it is probably not very useful as a practical guide for the experienced professional.
Introduction to Materials Management (5th Edition) by J.R. Tony Arnorld (hardcover).......2005-09-04
I was surprised that I got the book was kind of old and not a hardcover as I saw online.

Left feeling so-so.......2007-09-12
First off, let me say that if you are buying this book as a reference manual, then I think it deserves 5 stars. If you are using it to supplement your studies for something like A+ certification, its not the best for that. The problem lies in the fact that, like another reviewer here pointed out, he deals way to much with history. I feel like this took away a lot from trying to learn from the book as it became a boring read after a while. I dont care about computers from 20 years ago. I want to know recent things. A HUGE problem I have is their website. NONE of the video archives work. This was a huge selling point for me and was/is a tremendous disappointment. I contacted the webmaster 3 weeks ago and the problem hasnt been fixed. They all lead to a 404 error-page not found. That is a joke and an outrage.
upgrading and repairing pcs.......2007-09-11
This is a great book for my college course! I have enjoyed the book so far..thank you for the great item!
Great.......2007-07-16
It has everything I need to know about how to fix computer and Laptop problems.
Excellent Core Reference.......2007-07-05
I avoided this gargantuan book for several years because it seemed so intimidating . Then I took a class in PC repair and this was the textbook. Wow! did I learn a lot, not just about how to PCs work, but about how valuable this book is. Now it's my primary reference when I have a question about my system, or other systems or components. This has been Scott Mueller's life and he has done a splendid job of simplifying the mysteries of PC hardware for me. The book is not perfect. There's a lot of information here you'll never use, but there's a lot you will. Take it paragraph by paragraph, page by page and depending upon your interest, you will find it very illuminating. Information on older systems and components is purged with each updated edition, so the older editions have value for hobbyists who want to maintain older systems. Comes with a supplemental DVD which is also very worthwhile.
Positive Experience.......2007-06-27
Book was latest edition with several prior editions having been acquired as needed. Latest technology is added to each annual edition and working with recent technology requires the latest edition. I was performing a major upgrade of my home computer when the book was ordered and it proved invaluable when problems were encountered after assembly. Possible issues were identified and eliminated until the information helped isolate the boot-up problem and assist in installation of new Windows Vista Operating System software to get the computer functioning again. This book is a must for anyone who gets inside the computer to make changes and upgrades.

Boringless, easy to understand and real practical book. Reading this book I have troubleshoot many process problems effectively.
I strongly recommend this fantastic practical book for all levels.

Unique style.......2005-08-22
The unique style of the author explaining basic concepts with everyday problem expamples is what makes this book very absorbing and useful.
Great for students/interns and young process engineers!.......2003-07-18
I'm a summer intern in an oil refinery and few of my tasks were to rerate exchangers, fin fan coolers, etc., and I didn't have any experience whatsoever! They don't teach at school how this equipment works in a process context and if you don't have a clue on what you're doing, this is the best book to refer to. It is very elementary, but at the same time, it can be very specific. It goes through fundamental steps for troubleshooting general processes as well as clear explanations of how most of the equipment in the industry work. Highly recommended at any level!
How Process Equipment Works.......1999-12-25
As a licensed professional engineer and consultant in the Houston, TX area, I found this to be an excellent and useful book. It simplifies and demystifies fundamental chemical engineering principals and effectively illustrates how theory applies to understanding the root cause/s of real world plant operating problems.
The Lieberman's also do a fine job of making the book interesting to read through the use of non-process plant related anecdotes. These anecdotes help the reader understand the principals presented by drawing upon experiences and situations common to everyday life.
I highly recommend this book to engineers of all experience levels who work in the petroleum refining and chemical process industries.

buen libro.......2007-02-22
como parte de la materia lo llevo, me salio mas barato que en mexico y me es util para mi carrera
Amazing.......2007-01-12
The definitive book on Business dynamics !
It may look dificult to follow, but it isn`t really easy to read and follow !
The cd brings good examples.
Edward Garrity, Professor of Information Systems.......2007-01-04
Sterman's book is far and away the best and most comprehensive book on system dynamics for business. Although the title is "Business Dynamics" it really is a text on applying system dynamics to both business and larger social issues/systems.
If you are a strong student of business and systems then this is the book for you. It is highly recommended if you are interested in learning the most you possibly can regarding system dynamics and how to model systems. However, if you are searching for an introduction to this area - watch out. The book is actually quite advanced - it is used at MIT and other graduate business programs at top universities.
What is amazing about this book is that it blends absolute precision, correctness and detail with practical modeling advice and insight and it is written in a relaxed style with numerous examples. It is one of the best examples of clear writing about a complex topic. Dr. Sterman's years of system work has allowed him a level of clarity that is unsurpassed in the business and systems area.
As mentioned earlier, the book can be overwhelming and I would recommend a newcomer to this area to pick up several books first, to provide a more gentle introduction. This is not a contradiction of what I wrote earlier, it is simply that the book packs so much information in its pages, and it is still very long.
Highly recommended.
Has it all.......2006-10-20
I am writing in from India. I have been interested in Systems thinking/ system dynamics for about a year since I read an interesting consulting engagement in Europe that received an award from Management Consultants International (MCI). It's difficult to find a book that shows you the how and why of systems dynamics and its history and relevancy.
Its written by a leader in the field who very well knows what he is writing. The content is clear and has quite some depth for the discerning reader.
It comes with a software. However, unlike another book that I am reading, the sole purpose of this book doesn't seem to be using the software but in helping understand this field as a very good teacher would teach. This book has it all !!!

MUST have for a first time mom or any mom.......2007-09-08
No this book doesn't tell you to go out and buy this specific stroller or crib or car seat but it does review what things to check for while you are looking. There are just way too many choices out there for them to pick one (or a couple) item from each category and tell everyone to buy that item. What works for one person may not for another. I found this book very helpful. I'm going to be a first time mom in 3 months and every time I walk through the baby aisles in the stores (or online) looking at baby supplies my head would spin from the variety and quantity of products out there. How on earth can people choose! Of course we all want what is best for our babies! I go to consumer reports when I want to make a major purchase so when I found out they published a book on all their baby products I was relieved. Nothing is more important to me than having safe, reliable products for my baby. I am so glad I got it. The book reviews everything from cribs to car seats to pacifiers and bottles, bathtubs and beyond. It also discusses what NOT to get (i.e. some products that have not been deemed safe) which is equally important. I will be going to register for my shower with this book in my hand. There is a baby basics checklist in the beginning on which I have been taking notes as I read (and sometimes re-read) this book. It will make the registering a much easier process. I am buying this book for all my friends who are pregnant! Good luck to all the new moms and dads!
Good for first time parents.......2007-08-23
This book contains a lot of information on types of products. It goes through what you need and what will make life easier. It also details features on items that are both plus and minuses and what to look for when buying certain items but it often stops short of recommending a particular brand over another. I was a little surprised that it did not contain as many detailed brand vs. brand. There are some. I just expected more.
So if you are a first time parent and you need a little help as far as what to look for and what to look out for this will be helpful. If you are already a parent and are looking for brand recommendations skip purchasing this book.
Save your money!.......2007-08-20
Honestly? Save your money and buy a subscription to consumer reports online for $25/year. I didn't see much at all in this book that wasn't already available online through consumer reports.
Good Book, but doesn't say buy XXXX product.......2007-08-17
If you want a book that says buy this model, then this is NOT the book for you. They do rank a few models, very few... but what they do cover is things to look for in a product and what things to avoid. With the millions of baby products out there, just knowing what to look for and what to avoid does help a lot!!!
The most helpful book for baby products bar none.......2007-07-27
In picking out the items for our new baby, my husband and I were confronted by a lot of choices as well as a lot of confusing information. We picked up the consumer reports guide and got clear and unbiased answers to our questions. This book made our choices much clearer and easier and allowed us to choose our crib, stroller, and highchair (among other items) with confidence. the information is presented clearly and concisely. I cannot recommend it highly enough. This is the only book you will ever need. I know that I could not have done without it. I'm so glad I picked this book up.

Life saver...literally.......2006-07-20
This book is perfect for the scrub who wants to take every case but doesn't have the experience or just needs a brush-up. Even my instructors (both first-assists) recommended this book as a must-have.
Wonderful Book!!!.......2006-06-26
This book is excellent for all the new surgical technologists and ST students out there! This book lays it down in simple, almost layman-like terms but is very thorough. Everythng you need to prepare for a case you have never done is in this book. I cannot say enough about how greatly helpful this book is! It has gotten me through alot of stressful situations! If you read this book the night before or right before a case the MD will think you are the greatest thing since sliced bread because it really tells you EVERYTHING you need to know! I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend buying this book. It makes your job SO much easier!!!
A must have for any OR professional!.......2006-03-22
An indispensible guide for OR procedures/surgeries! Each procedure includes a definition, procedure info, pt positioning, skin prep, draping, equipment, instrumentation, supplies and special notes. Also has tray setup info. Very informative! Compact size, all text, no pictures. Worth the money!
A "Must-Have" book for new OR nurses.......2005-08-13
This book is wonderful! I have used it over and over again! I bring it home with me at night to review what my cases will be for the following day, and then, because the book is small enough I can take it along with me as a back-up! It gives sections on prepping as well as equipment needs, positioning, and what to expect during the surgery! It definitely is a "Must-Have" book for the OR nurse!

A Brilliant Analysis of Three "Key" Interrelationships.......2007-08-08
As Sunil Chopra and Peter Meindl explain in their Preface, the purpose of their book is to help those who read it to "develop an understanding of the following key areas and their interrelationships: the strategic role of a supply chain, the key strategic drivers of supply chain performance, and [the] analytical methodologies for supply chain analysis." I think their material will be of greatest interest and value to executives who are now centrally involved in management of larger organizations' supply chains. However, I think their book will also be of substantial benefit to others who are directly or indirectly involved as strategic allies in those supply chains, those who can also help to ensure effective management of them.
Chopra and Meindl carefully organize their material as follows:
Part I: Building a Strategic Framework to Analyze Supply Chains
Part II: Designing the Supply Chain Network
Part III: Planning Demand and Supply in a Supply Chain
Part IV: Planning and Managing Inventories in a Supply Chain
Part V: Designing and Planning Transportation Networks
Part VI: Managing Cross-Functional Drivers in a Supply Chain
I was especially interested in the final part because one of the greatest challenges when establishing and then sustaining an effective supply chain is to take into full account the need to get all participants in proper alignment, especially when cross-functional resources to achieve to achieve mutually-beneficial results. In Part VI, Chopra and Meindl respond to questions such as these:
1. What is the role of sourcing?
2. How to achieve design collaboration?
3. What are the most important "drivers" of pricing and revenue management?
4. What is IT's role?
5. What does effective risk management require?
6. What are the major barriers to effective coordination?
7. How to build strategic partnerships and trust between and among stakeholders?
Many readers (I among them) will also appreciate the provision of a "Summary of Learning Objectives" and "Discussion Questions" at the conclusion of each of the 17 chapters. Credit Chopra and Meindl with fully achieving their objectives when they set out to write this book: To help their readers to understand the strategic role of a supply chain, the key strategic drivers of supply chain performance, and the analytic methodologies for supply chain analysis.
Bravo!
Book Description
Logistics management is increasingly being seen as a source of competitive strength. Its effective use provides potential for cost reduction and the opportunity for increasing market share. The second edition discusses the role of logistics in achieving corporate and financial goals. Updated and expanded with more checklists, more short cases and executive summaries, this is an invaluable guide for all logistics and distribution managers.
Customer Reviews:
Boring book.......2007-06-10
Keeps repeating the same things over and over using different words. Very boring and nothing new to learn.
Modern logistics - an executive summary.......2007-02-08
After reading various textbooks on logistics, quantitative analysis and strategy, this book was very refreshing, in large part from the fact that it is a short and non-technical book. The title of my review says it all, this book is summary for busy people wanting to get som insights into what is going on in logistics and organizational theory . I got through the book in two readings, which is a very valuable aspect for busy people.
Still, despite being brief, it touches on most important aspects, and points you to further areas of importance if what you read here makes you want to change things in your organization.
So: Not technical, easy read, 4 stars instead of 5 because it is too brief to be truly useful for those that actually want to learn the subject-matter.
PS: The printing I recieved was a defect, pages 247 to 278 missing (Replaced by duplicate pages 215-246), ust watch out for that.
Excellent Advanced SCM Book - Repost.......2007-01-05
This is a wonderful book and introduces the practioner to some of the frontiers of strategically driven service response logistics. In other words how to design, deploy and organize integrated SCM for corporate strategic reasons, not just for functional cost control. Probably one of three key books for understanding the frontiers and highly recommended.
Key is the process, customer value and system integration perspectives threaded throughout but particularly in the last several chapters. The chaper on service response logistics is worth the price of the book.
As a practioner dealing with advanced SCM I found this very worthwhile and found myself wishing I'd written it. If you are relatively new to the field you need a decent baseline grounding and Stock & Lambert's book on 'Strateigc Logistics' is a perfect complement. To move slightly higher up the food chain get the recent compilation of HBR articles called 'Managing the Value Chain'. Together the three make a perfect bookshelf set for any practioner, student or corporate executive who needs to understand what integrated logistics, SCM or the future of e-business might be doing to your career or your firm's competitive prospects !
Easy to read, theorethically strong and practical enough.......2006-03-03
After reading many books about logistics and supply chain issues, this third edition adds value to the field.

As always, the author ends with a view to the future and introduce the readers in the ever challenging thoughs of business transformations.
I Need It Yesterday .......2005-06-12
At first glance this is a book that is going to scare off the vast number of readers. Unless you are in this field or this is part of your daily job, why would you read this book. I submit that most managers today need to have a basic understanding of this process, which is why I read this book. Overall I came to the book with no real understanding of the topic nor had I ever read a book along these lines before. I found the book to be a nice and understandable overview of the topic. I did find it to be a bit more detailed then I was looking for, but I understand that the book was not necessarily meant for a reader such as myself.
I think what interested me most was that I used to think of this topic as just a line of trucks coming into the plant so to speak. The book brings out that supply chains are really complex networks with many moving parts. Due to the increased out sourcing and off shoring, the complexity of these chains has grown. With this complexity comes even more of a need for pro-active coordination within the network. This is the reason the book and concepts are important. Overall I enjoyed the book. Sure it had more detail then I wanted, but I assume that a seasoned professional in this line of work needs that detail. I also found the book to be, at times, a bit dry, but I attribute this to my lack of real depth in the area. If you are looking for something in this subject I think this is a good starting point.
