Book Description
Since the publication of the first edition of
Content Analysis:
An Introduction to Its Methodology, the textual fabric in which contemporary society functions has undergone a radical transformation – namely, the ongoing information revolution. Two decades ago, content analysis was largely known in journalism and communication research, and, to a lesser extent, in the social and psychological sciences. Today, content analysis has become an efficient alternative to public opinion research – a method of tracking markets, political leanings, and emerging ideas, a way to settle legal disputes, and an approach to explore individual human minds.
The
Second Edition of
Content Analysis is a definitive sourcebook of the history and core principles of content analysis as well as an essential resource for present and future studies. The book introduces readers to ways of analyzing meaningful matter such as texts, images, voices – that is, data whose physical manifestations are secondary to the meanings that a particular population of people brings to them.
Organized into three parts, the book examines the conceptual and methodological aspects of content analysis and also traces several paths through content analysis protocols. The author has completely revised and updated the
Second Edition, integrating new information on computer-aided text analysis. The book also includes a practical guide that incorporates experiences in teaching and how to advise academic and commercial researchers. In addition,
Krippendorff clarifies the epistemology and logic of content analysis as well as the methods for achieving its aims.
Author Klaus
Krippendorff discusses three distinguishing characteristics of contemporary content analysis: that it is fundamentally empirically grounded, exploratory in process, and predictive or inferential in intent; that it transcends traditional notions of symbols, contents, and intents; and that it has been forced to develop a methodology of its own, one that enables researchers to plan, execute, communicate, reproduce, and critically evaluate an analysis independent of the desirability of its
results.
Intended as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students across the social sciences,
Content Analysis, Second Edition will also be a valuable resource for practitioners in a variety of disciplines.

Masterpiece in Content Analysis literature.......2007-06-09
This is a masterpiece by a leading scholar. Of course, absolute beginners are suggested to first read some other introductory (better more than one ;-) ) text on content analysis, because this book is quite advanced (even though the title tells that it is an introduction...) and discusses issues that would not sometimes be comprehended without having some prior knowledge and range of perspectives in the field. Otherwise, it is thorough, reflexive and innovative, always making you think and argue with the writer while reading.
Promising parts, terrible whole.......2006-08-12
This book has some interesting insights in the content analysis, especially the analytical framework within which it occurs, but it is greatly marred by an insistent need to be hopelessly obscure in its writing. The author seems to be purposely attempting to put things in as difficult jargon (both in the sense of scholarly but more importantly in the sense of 'strange') as possible. This book strikes me as infinitely inferior to the book by Fico et al on the same topic.
Very thorough - but lamentable when it comes to discussing Text/Content Analysis Softwares........2006-02-07
This is an excellent book that could have earned its fifth star if the author had nudged the content somewhat closer to the world of practical research. There's tons of good theory here, and I'm glad the author has included a history of content analysis also - but I felt the author didn't fully address the exigencies of the practical market or social researcher. Among the many uses of content analysis under discussion, the researchers' use of verbatims from surveys, or the analysis of transcripts from focus groups each receive only a glancing reference.
Still, Krippendorff discusses the subject with a lot more depth than an analyst might anticipate - after all codifying and measuring the subtle nuances of text (with respect to its context) is not a black and white matter of doing word counts and bar graphs.
Where this volume loses a star is on the subject of computer assisted text analysis (CATA). Here, Krippendorff cops out, stating that software evolution has been rapid, (true!) but then referring us to papers written in...1995. This is not good enough: not when the jacket says this edition includes "new information on computer-aided text analysis." Content Analysis was published in 2004 after all. Its like saying that automative transport is evolving rapidly...so how about looking at these books from the 1930s, about rail? Grrr!
But that's one star off, and it simply means that if you want a user guide to softwares, and how to employ these, then you need to look elsewhere. A simple Google search on Text Analysis Softwares will yield what you may need.
Overall, to be fair, Krippendorff sticks to the subtitle and gives us "an introduction to methodology" and this means that the book stays mostly in theoretical territory. The territory is extensive enough however for researchers who really want to grapple with the complexities of this as one of the very richest areas of cultural or marketing research. In summary, I feel a more user-oriented, (and stylistically more lively,) guide has yet to be written. In the meantime this lays a thorough foundation that is well worth a read. Put on your 'specialist' hat.
Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive, balanced introduction to communication research methods.
Designed for readers who have little or no familiarity with research methods, this book helps one become a more knowledgeable and competent consumer (and limited producer) of scholarly research and of the everyday research to which they are exposed by the mass media. Praised for its accessible writing and extensive real-life examples, this book takes a step-by-step approach through the communication research process. Investigating Communication shows how communication research is conducted from start to finish, with the book's organization modeled after a traditional research study. By making the material accessible rather than impossible to learn, readers become excited about studying research methods.
For anyone interested in the introductory methods of communication research.

Investigating Communication Offers Excellent Overview.......2000-06-02
I highly recommend this book to those seeking an introduction to communication research methods. This book is creative and well organized. Concepts are explicated with "real studies" and the concepts' definitions are clearly conveyed. The numerous examples highlight the breadth and depth of research in the field of communication studies while helping the reader to answer the "so what" questions about research methods. I enjoy using this book with my undergraduate research methods classes and my students speak favorably about their experience using it.

Book Description
Robert B. Brandom is one of the most original philosophers of our day, whose book Making It Explicit covered and extended a vast range of topics in metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of language--the very core of analytic philosophy. This new work provides an approachable introduction to the complex system that Making It Explicit mapped out. A tour of the earlier book's large ideas and relevant details, Articulating Reasons offers an easy entry into two of the main themes of Brandom's work: the idea that the semantic content of a sentence is determined by the norms governing inferences to and from it, and the idea that the distinctive function of logical vocabulary is to let us make our tacit inferential commitments explicit.
Brandom's work, making the move from representationalism to inferentialism, constitutes a near-Copernican shift in the philosophy of language--and the most important single development in the field in recent decades. Articulating Reasons puts this accomplishment within reach of nonphilosophers who want to understand the state of the foundations of semantics.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book!.......2006-11-26
Brandom is one of the last of a line of philosophers (like Sellars, Frege, Habermas, Kant-Hegel) who actually take philosophy (and with it the liberal arts) seriously. Not an easy book (but nothing by Brandom ever is) it might take several reads to get through it; but it is a very rewarding read once one does.
Brandom's Prolegomena.......2004-09-16
This short book stands in relation to the author's "Making it Explicit" as Kant's "Prolegomena" stands to his "Critique of Pure Reason." It's a solid, relatively friendly introduction to his inferentialist semantics and expressivist conception of logic (and philosophy). It will probably best serve those already versed in analytic philosophy of language and epistemology. In contrast to "Making it Explicit," there's not a lot of history in here, and few points of contact with continental philosophy. The point of this book is to render the highlights of the bigger work in a much more digestible form. If you're killing yourself trying to figure out chapters 6-8 of "Making it Explicit," give this a shot. This reviewer, for one, found the summaries in the shorter work very helpful. In fact, "Articulating Reasons" might better be thought of as a companion rather than an introduction to "Making it Explicit." Reading the former alongside the latter would be a profitable endeavor. In sum, Brandom's ideas about meaning, intentionality, practical reason, normativity and justification are some of the most exciting around. "Articulating Reasons" is probably the best way to start trying to get a grip on them. (By the way: students of epistemology won't want to miss the chapter on Goldman's reliabilism.)
Book Description
Serious graphic design students and creative professionals will find this presentation of quantitative and qualitative research methods in visual communication invaluable. Fully illustrated with eye-opening real-life case studies, it focuses on the relatively unexplored process of design analysis. Illuminating and thought-provoking discussions deal with such issues as the audience, communications theory, experimentation in the studio, semiotics, and semantics. A final section features suggestions on how to synthesize practical and theoretical models, with strategies that working designers can really use.

Book Description
This Second Edition retains all the same primary objectives as the original text: First, to present basic combustion concepts using relatively simple and easy-to -understand analyses; and second, to introduce a wide variety of practical applications which motivate or relate to the various theoretical concepts. The overarching goal is to provide a textbook which is useful for both formal undergraduate study in mechanical engineering and in related fields, and informal study by practicing engineers.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Introduction to Combustion.......2007-01-01
I became acquainted with this book when it was used as one of several references for a graduate level mechanical engineering course in combustion. The book does an excellent job of explaining chemical equilibrium and chemical kinetics - particularly if the reader has very little previous exposure to these topics.
I would have liked to see more solved example problems but this is probably a desire of any student when using an engineering text.
This book is well written and presents much complex material for the non-chemist in a clear and concise manner. Those working with internal combustion engines will find the materials on pollutant formation (Chapter 15) very useful, including the 78 end of chapter references.

Readable.......2003-03-21
This book is used at UCLA for a senior mechanical/aerospace engineering course. I would only recommend it to someone interested in pursuing graduate level course work in combustion. Suggested Prereq: Heat & MassX, Fluids, Chemistry, Thermodynamics, Differential Equations (ODE, PDE, CPU).
The good
It has good references to modern combustion sources/codes. good introduction to whats possible.
The bad
A lot of derivations are made, but the equations arent solved, except for the trivial or ultra-simplified cases. So its not too useful for a practicing engineer.
The ugly
He mispells prior as priori about 20 times, and refers to variable as rs. You dont know if it is r times s, or if it is multiple r's.
An Introduction to Combustion : Concepts and Applications.......2000-12-29
An excellent introductory book on combustion. Suitable for an undergraduate course or for self-study. Fundamental concepts are clearly explained with many calculation examples and problems to solve. The material is presented in a very attractive and easy to read way. Also, has numerous references to webpages with useful information, plus computer programmes to solve basic problems, like equilibrium composition. The overall approach is to provide tools to make practical calculations using computational tools.
a good cobustion course textbook.......2000-06-20
An appreciable attempt to cover the basics of all aspects of combustion science on a first comburtion-science course level, this book does manage to be very clear and structured, with good examples and clarifying illustrations, students of combustion science will find it a very helpful introduction. However, as many science books often are, it fails to present a synthetic view of this field, and the reader is left wondering if such a view is even possible, but the different chapters may serve those interested specifically in them.
Steve Turns makes Combustion easy.......2000-06-17
I think Steve has abilities to convey scientific ideas in a simple, easy to understand manner. His interaction with industrial clients, industrial applications and combustion equipment has given him an insight for explaining basics as applied to the real world. He also understands utilities of various combustion properties, parameters and correlations. He also knows how you can apply it for the maximim benefit for a given process. I recommend this book to any practicing engineer in the combustion field. Steve is a great communicator and a friend of combustion industry. At Air Liquide I have used this book to design burners, flames and combustion processes for steel, glass, chemical and process industries. Sincerely, Dr. Mike Joshi, Combustion Scientist, Air Liquide, Chicago Research Center, Countryside, IL 60525
Book Description
Author Arthur Asa Berger employs his signature style - a practical focus, the use of numerous examples, a step-by-step approach, and humor – in his latest book,
Media and Communication Research Methods. Combining both qualitative and quantitative research methods, this introductory text covers the topics thoroughly and is clearly written and fun-to-read. This book is ideal for beginning research students both at the graduate and undergraduate level because it is clear, concise, and accompanied by many detailed examples.
Arthur Asa Berger is a professor of Broadcast & Electronic Communication Arts at San Francisco State University, where he has taught since 1965. He is author of numerous articles and books on popular culture and related concerns.
Customer Reviews:
Consise, easy to understand- and altogether a pleasant read!.......2003-07-22
This is a really straightforward and easy to understand book. Berger carefully and thoroughly goes over different methods used to create original research, both qualitative and qualitative. He carefully spells out the drawbacks each can have and outlines the important tactics that a researcher can use to insure the validity of their findings. Among the topics covered in this book are how research proposals generally work, interviewing, content analysis, historical analysis (quantitative), polling, statistical analysis, and testing (experiments) (qualitative). He also talks about different kinds of textual analysis and includes in here possibly the clearest explanation of semiotics I have ever come across. He has a plain, un-jargonized writing style and breaks apart text with cute illustrations and some admittedly lame "skits" (always between "him" and the "Grand Inquisitor" - you'll see. These are apparently supposed to be funny, but aren't.)
The chapters in this book are aided even further by never being so long as to be overwhelming. Berger doesn't mince words, but explains precisely and completely- and then switches to a new topic. Would that more authors would learn how to do this!
This was assigned reading for a graduate level class in which we prepared our thesis proposals. I think it should be mandatory reading for anyone considering embarking on original media research. I liked this book and though I would never have picked it up on my own- I am grateful that of all the choices there must be out there, my teacher chose this book.
Book Description
This accessible text provides an extensive survey of the major theories and models that influence reading instruction and research. Readers learn why theory matters in designing and implementing high-quality instruction; how to critically evaluate the assumptions and beliefs that guide their own work with students; and the benefits of approaching everyday teaching situations from multiple theoretical perspectives. Every chapter features classroom application activities and illuminating teaching vignettes. Of particular utility to graduate students, the book also addresses research applications, including descriptions of exemplary studies informed by each theoretical model.
