Customer Reviews:
Just O.K........2007-01-26
I read this book immediately after reading Krug's "Don't Make Me Think," which is fantastic. In comparison, "Hot Text..." was mediocre. Krug's book--although presenting a bigger picture of the world of websites--truly synthesizes the nuts and bolts for writing for the web. "Hot Text" had a lot of what I felt was extraneous information and text (ironic, because really, what writing for the web is about is brevity and conciseness).
If you haven't read Krug's book, "Hot Text" will be a good starting point for you. It contains a lot of information, it also contains some good resources.
I also have to say that I agree with an earlier reviewer--the photographs (which look like poor black & white photocopies) are strange. Example: Chapter 8, Idea 4: Build Chunky Paragraphs! The photograph shows a middle-aged man holding a small bowl or cup up to his mouth. He's looking off-camera; his right hand is by his mouth but I'm not sure why. Maybe he's eating some chunky soup? But what does soup have to do with paragraphs? It's a small detail, these photographs, but they detract from the overall professionalism of the book for me.
not what I expected.......2006-08-13
I haven't picked it up in a while. When it first arrived I was disappointed, it didn't have the pertinent info I was looking for. It's not anywhere nearby to refer to it. Basically, the "hot text" isn't really there. The outline was dull. The photos were kind of sad. I didn't like the presentation and the content didn't seem to live up to whatever the review was in the Amazon blurb.
Everything You Need under One Roof.......2006-07-28
This manual for online writing has it all--and more.
1. Detailed instruction for every conceivable page of Web site content.
2. Super tips and insight on PR content and dealing with editors and publishers.
3. The history of HTML (very cool!)
4. All sorts of useful style tips.
5. How to write your resume.
6. How to get a job.
7. Hundreds of online resources.
The writing (needless to say?)is clear, concise, and conversational. Had the book been written in 2006 instead of 2002, I'm sure the authors would have thrown in much more about blogs. Other than that, the material seems to be up to date.
This book is worth every penny!
How To Write for the Digital Media.......2004-04-25
An excellent book that points out the differences between digital media and paper media. I especially learned a lot in Chapter 3 - What Will the Web Do to My Text? But there is much throughout the entire book. You'll learn about writing in general and writing for the web in particular. And from the web you'll go to email, ezines, enewsletters, weblogs and the gamut. If you're going to write for the web you need this book.

Review
On the surface, you may think that writing is writing, regardless of the medium. You may think that if you can write a 2500 word article for a magazine, that you can successfully use that same style for web sites. And unfortunately, you'd be wrong. The mindset of online writing is completely different than for print, and this book will help you to understand that.
People read books and magazines for many reasons, but often it's to be entertained or to learn about a subject in depth. But when people visit web sites, it's usually to find an answer quickly. The reader wants to find the chunk of information they seek and then move on. If they don't see what they think they want, it's off to another site. The authors do an excellent job in this book breaking down the content structure of web writing. To successfully write for the web, you need to organize your information in discrete chunks that can be quickly linked to or scanned for applicable information. They show you how to effectively structure your writing by the use of shorter paragraphs, lists, bullets, external links, and a number of other techniques that will allow your ideas to flourish in an online medium.
The tone of their writing is conversational and easy, without the academic lecturing that often shows up in books where opinion and fact can blur together. They also use a lot of "before/after" examples to show you how the techniques actually work. I was actually surprised that I liked the book as much as I did. Many books on web site design go off on "expert rants" in which the author presents his likes/dislikes as expert opinion. Although some of the information in this book could fall into the same category, there wasn't the strident tone that often happens in other books.
Conclusion
Writing for the web entails different skills than writing for print medium. This book will help you understand the issues involved and to make a successful transition to online authoring. Recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Good book for learning and reference........2007-03-22
I found this book to be an outstanding tool for learning Crystal Report. It's an easy read and has many easy and relevant examples.
Furthermore, since this is my first few weeks of using BOXI, I find myself referencing this book a lot. So far I have not been disappointed!
Should have come with the software..........2007-01-08
Remember back in the "good old days" of shrinkwrapped software when the box was mostly full with a big printed reference manual? Well, this is the book that should have come inside the now-nearly-empty box. The book is a standard reference-type manual designed to provide an overview of every feature within the product including the newest features such as Dynamic and Cascading Parameter Generation. Besides the standard overview type stuff, it includes some basic tutorials on often-confusing topics such as report integration (in .NET and J2EE environments); you won't become an expert using these tutorials, however. The book also includes a lot of information on how Crystal Reports integrates with Business Objects' larger software platforms (which, I suspect, will be a useless topic for 99% of users).
Beginning users will find the manual easy to use and full of interesting information. Intermediate users will find solid suggestions here and there. Advanced users will probably give it a flip-through and stuff it on the shelf next to all the other references where it will be used for occasional consultation. All in all a solid offering in a fairly crowded field, but one that is authoratative and complete. But I just can't shake the feeling that the manual should have come in the box. Heck, it even looks and feels just like the typical software documentation of days gone by...
Book Description
In order for a Web site to sell effectively, it must appeal to the unique culture, mindset, and psychology of the Web. Simply put, what works in the brick-and-mortar world does not necessarily grab Web shoppers. Companies selling products and services online need to promote their wares with engaging copy that grabs attention and compels Web site visitors to buy.
Web Copy That Sells presents copy strategies that have been proven time and again in the e-commerce arena. Maria Veloso, perhaps the most widely acclaimed Web copywriter in the world, reveals her revolutionary approach based on five simple questions, which, when answered, make the copy practically write itself. Veloso crams all the information from her 12-hour, $997 live seminars into a comprehensive book that will help any Web copywriter:
* write sizzling and irresistible Web copy, e-mails, and marketing communications * quickly turn lackluster sites into "perpetual money machines" * use Neuro-Linguistic Programming and psychological tactics to compel Web surfers to buy * avoid the top three blunders that can wipe out your sales * convert up to 50% of online prospects into paying customers * and more!
Customer Reviews:
Webcopy is interesting - not sure if I am comfortable with the style for b2b.......2007-05-28
I found the book interesting and enlightening. I think with all ideas you have to temper this to your audience. I would not use this to attract the CEO of AT&T in the form she presented. However the concepts and steps ring true as long as they are toned down to suit your market. We are just working on some sub pages tied to adwords campaigns to test the waters.
Very similar in style to [...]
Outstanding Reference with contemporary approach.......2007-05-09
I read this book in days highlighting areas for future reference. I enjoyed the book's approach and it was very well written. Veloso didn't leave any stones uncovered. Above all, it was like a college refresher course but more practical and focused to the needs for those desiring to improve their web copy and content. Additionally, after reading the book, I ordered a second to share with my internet marketing people and staff at Gloves-Online.
Solid Information that will increase your business.......2007-04-13
Web Copy That Sells is well written, easy to read and a great resource for improving your web copy.
There are a number of points that Maria makes regarding web copy that apply equally to all areas of business as well as life. For example, she points out that you cannot simply model some successful website and expect the same results. You must model the process. That is go through the same process that the creator of the successful website went through.
The book is not only a resource for web copy that sells, it is also a very good marketing course. She points out that potential customers must know you, like you and ultimately trust you before they will do business with you. She provides a step by step method to accomplish this.
Maria is right on when she talks about the importance of the first screen and why you must concentrate on what's in it for the viewer. The website should not be designed as an ego boosting medium. You must keep the viewer's point of view in mind.
She provides a good list of dos and don'ts for web copy. There are plenty of other tools such as a formula to evaluate any website.
Scattered throughout the book are excellent marketing lessons - words tell, emotion sells - fear of loss is a better motivator than desire for gain. You would do well to read and understand these very valuable marketing lessons.
This is a very good resource for anyone responsible for their own or their company's website.
Better than most but not the best I have read........2007-01-05
This book had some useful ideas, however given the amount of knowledge the author claims to have I feel she is keeping all the good stuff for her copy writing courses.
Rather light on useful content. Joe Sugarman is a much better choice.
Priceless.......2006-12-21
This book is absolutely priceless. I hear what some of the critical comments say. The fact is they are not grasping the brilliant lessons and enormous time savers Maria shares in this book that apply across the board to writing copy and marketing on line. First off, she makes it very clear her book is about what it says, writing web copy that sells, not writing web content. The whole point and value of this book are the formulas that will save INCREDIBLE amounts of time while ensuring you address every element that goes into capturing paying customers online. THAT'S the value. The actual words you use in writing your own specific copy are up to you. You don't have to sound like a snake oil salesman. I sell upscale b2b, business owners and senior executives and what I learned in the book is indeed killer. Practical lessons that I can immediately apply. Read this book and combine what you learn with Frank Rumbauskas Never Cold Call Again (and I haven't in the past 6 months), Metaphorically Selling by Anne Miller, and Richard Koch's The 80/20 Principle, The Secret of Achieving More With Less, and then work hard (sorry) and you'll be a lean mean money machine.
One thing I am very cautious about is all the copywriters that have made the change to copy writing over priced self generated programs on how to get rich copy writing (i.e. Bly, Masterson, Silver and others). Do a search on google to find good resources to seriously research the feasibility and process to make such a transition and your head will spin clicking on all the sites by these gurus with $500 to $2,000. This seems to be a whole niche that has become popular today to go side by side with network marketing. Get rich easy and quick with my magic formula to becoming a copywriter. (I do NOT put this book in that category, like I said this book is easily worth multiples of its price). I am also NOT saying that the money to be made in the industry is not accurate. Just like in network marketing where I did in fact make 6 figures a year in that industry for a while. The reality was it took HARK WORK, which terrifies most of the folks looking for the ever elusive easy buck. And as P.T. Barnum always knew, there are plenty of folks who want to believe it be so. When ever someone truly discovers the secret to becoming rich plugging into some formula system is the day everyone you know will be rich. The reality is if anything worked like that you couldn't stop it from sweeping the country. No one would be poor anymore...and I guess the new poor would be the least rich, right?
Bottom line, buy this book. If you use the principles, formulas and concepts Maria teaches you, you will indeed make a lot more money than you are now. If it sits on a shelf gathering dust waiting for the someday you are going to use some of the stuff it won't make you one single cent.

GREAT FOR THE ASPIRING COMIC WRITER!.......2003-05-28
This is a great text that takes you through the creative process of several unique writing styles. The variety of script and drawings from a host of authors, really made this book encouraging to the aspiring comic writer. I'm looking forward to getting Panel Two when it comes out.
Why didn't some body think of this sooner?.......2002-05-07
It seems like such an obvious good idea.
It's a wonderful glimpse into the creative process.
Just received it last night, and I'm already half through it. I haven't done that since I was eleven and got Stan Lee's How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. Not that this book has any similarity to that one. This is not a how to book. Its a more intimate, than any instructional book. Its a similar difference in experience to watching a biography to reading someones private correspondence. The presentation adds to the feeling as well.
Better than seeing pencils, better than watching a demo, or hearing someone try to explain the creative process. You actually see it and are part of it because this is what the artist sees, while he is in the process.
As a comic book fan for years and creative hopeful (which I believe is a large part of the intended audience), I hope this is first in a long line.
Great job, thanks Mr. Gertler.
Cool, helpful, worth the read.......2002-04-04
One thing that's bugged me in my various efforts at writing a comic book script is that no reference I checked seemed to agree as to what format is right. As this book explains, that's because there IS no "right" or "wrong" format, just different ways to do it.
Every script in this volume shows you something. Gaiman's reads like a personal note to the artist, Wolfman shows how plot-first can work, McDuffie shows you how to work in a recap, Kevin Smith shows a more movie-script style of writing and Kurt Busiek's entry... heck, when I read the original comic book I thought it was one of the greatest comic book stories I ever read, but the script for "The Nearness of You" just made it all the more powerful.
If you want to try to write comics, you could do a lot worse than picking up this book.

Customer Reviews:
Dreadful.......2007-05-21
This book was required for a graduate course in visual communications. The book is written in a style of chest-puffing academic balderdash that renders it useless and unreadable. Crummy paper and truly ugly illustrations add to the miasma. I usually keep classroom texts but I'm selling back this one. I won't get much money though because it's so poorly bound that it looks much more used than it really was. Poor unlucky student who buys it.
Poor quality.......2005-09-12
The content of this book is not bad, but the actual quality of product is horrendous.
I have had this text for about a week and the pages have already become unbound. Some of the pages look like they were printed on a photocopier running out of ink. The text is fine, but the graphs look terrible. One would think that a book about design would have put more thought into their own design and production run.
My gripe is simply that this book is too much money for the truly piss-poor physical quality. $76 for a book whose binding became unglued in the first week? $76 for a text whose pages look like they were printed on with an empty toner cartridge? This is a sick joke! Designing Visual Language is a piece of junk and Allyn & Bacon should be ashamed of themselves for having no quality control.
Addendum...
I'm wondering why people have not found this review helpful. Is it because they want to buy a book that is poorly made? If so, I invite you to buy the book. Unless Allyn & Bacon make some serious changes, you'll soon think, "Maybe his review WAS helpful after all!" but by that time you'll be out $76.
Designing Visual Language.......2001-07-14
It reads kind of like a text book, but the information is very good. I am trying to learn about graphic design in my free time and this book has helped me to better understand the basics of visual communication. I have also reciently read "The non-designers design book", which I also recommend. This book starts at the beginning and helps you to understand what you must do, and take into account in order to make something visually pleasing. It has helped me in my design efforts. The book was lent to me and now I plan on buying it, it was so good. I might even look into the rest of the books in the series. (The Allyn & Bacon series in Technical Communication) All in all a good book. I give it 4 stars

Color theory and compositionexplained in clear, understandable quilters' language

A gallery of beautiful quilts follows each exercise and shows how beginners and professionals use color and composition techniques to create magic. Great for traditional and art quilters, this book makes quilters' talent shine.
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2007-02-15
Learn some new ways iof looking at color ar expand what you think you know. Lovely ideas and great things to put into use.
Good color and composition course for quilters.......2006-04-02
I took a basic color and design class at a community college about a decade ago. We worked through similiar exercises to those in this book, but with paper, not with fabric as in this book. If you have wanted to take a basic color and design class at a college but don't have the time or resources, this is an excellent book. The only thing I like better about the college class is that you have a real person demanding your homework!
Improve your skills.......2005-10-11
If you hated homework you won't like this book, but if you are willing to follow the instructions and trust the authors to lead you to new skills, you will come away from the lessons in this book with a better understanding of drawing and coloring ways to add to your personal style of making art quilts. I will do this and look forward to the experience!
Book Description
By Jerome Rothenberg. Contributions by Steven Clay.
Book Description
This unique book presents solid composition and design instruction with an emphasis on fun and creativity. The first half of the book focuses on traditional realism while the latter examines more experimental art. In both cases, the underlying lesson is that good composition and design is the underlying foundation of any successful painting, whether super-realistic or non-objective.
Author Pat Dews illustrates this concept by showing, step-by-step, how successful painters in a variety of styles and mediums (including watercolor, water media, pastel, collage and more) use these principles to create gorgeous works of art. A few of the artists sampled design while they paint, always experimenting, using various techniques to decide what will work before committing to a final composition. Others design their compositions before they start painting. Some combine the two approaches. Readers will discover that they can compose beautiful paintings while being as creative as they want to be.
Pat Dews is a signature member of AWS and NWS and is a very popular workshop instructor. She is the author of Creative Discoveries in Watermedia. She lives in Hobe Sound, Florida.

Creative Composition & Design.......2007-01-03
Have enjoyed using this as a reference after observing her in a demo.
Dews is not a good painter.......2006-11-23
Gorky was famous for saying :" I am not interested in poor art for poor people." This is the worst of the 'how to books'. It is simply dumb art for dumb people!
very involved.......2005-10-27
the book teaches a lot, and it's great to read how to finish started works. however, you need a background in abstract work to understand her lessons. I have no such background, and her descriptions of the works in progress confused me. as well, her projects require a lot of specialized art supplies - inks and pigments and stuff that I don't have lying around. the projects also require a lot of space - easels w/ full sheets of watercolor paper, storage for scraps, etc. if you want to spend the $$, go ahead. I'm in a dorm and don't have the background, space, or $$ to do the projects.
A Must For Your Art Library!.......2005-07-16
if you are interested in composition and design, this is a must for your art library. clear, consice, immensely readable, pat dews acts as your personal guide! while her focus may seem in the "abstract vein", there is something for everyone here, no matter what your interest is. warmly written, i found myself reading every word. now that's something for a visual book! her explanations, photos and critiques were helpful and made me want to run to the studio to start my own wonderful discoveries!
Well Worth Waiting For!.......2003-06-19
This is one of the best art instruction books that is now available. It is an excellent follow-up to Creative Discoveries in Watermedia published in 1998.Creative Composition & Design is a workshop in book format. Pat Dews warm positive attitude comes across on each page. The book is very well designed with excellent color photographs of art that will inspire you to create. The tips that are listed on various pages are very helpful. The section showing how different artists work on design and composition is an excellent way to gain additional ideas for your own work. The critiques shown of student work places you right into the workshop experience. You will see how paintings are resolved. You will learn a lot from this book and return to it often.I highly recommend this book-it was worth waiting for.If you are unable to attend a workshop with Pat Dews this is the next best thing. If you have been fortunate enough to take a workshop with Pat Dews this book will act as an excellent follow-up.

Customer Reviews:
An Indispensable Addition.......2002-04-09
This is an unusually intelligent yet practical book, clearly written and highly readable. No other book in this genre comes close to the ease and usefulness it offers. While the book does not dazzle the reader with many visually dramatic pages it packs an enormous amount of information in every chapter. Obviously the synergistic combination of the husband-and-wife teamĀfs respective backgrounds -- one an academic who pioneered technical writing for the high tech world and the other who created many types of print materials for Microsoft -- shines through the pages.
Whether you are a professional Web site designer or a novice interested in learning to produce a Web site simply for pleasure, this book makes a great addition to your library.
I predict that this will become, if it is not already, a standard textbook in its field. I give it an unequivocal 5 stars.
Excellent Book on Web Design.......2001-12-29
Principles of Web Design explains the concepts and principles that underlie Web design and prepares you to discuss, build, critique, and improve websites. Unlike many trade books on Web design, this book is not light reading. It is, however, accessible and well organized. It is worthwhile for its intended university audience and for the working professionals who desire to expand and strengthen their skill sets. As an information architect and usability specialist, I find it a valuable addition to my professional library. Highly recommended.

A must have for a newsletter specialist!.......1999-12-18
In all the books I have on newsletter design, this has been the most beneficial! It offers many great examples in full color stating what each design has to offer. It has lots of tips and addresses each part that goes into newsletters from nameplates to the mailing panel. I wish they would come out with a new one!
Great for Designing Newsletter Style Websites!.......1998-08-02
Good design and layout is important for the success of any Website. Websites are created to share information of one sort or another and do not follow any one design pattern. One popular design format for sharing information online that we should be familiar with is the newsletter style that is intended to communicate information in similar fashion as the common newsletters we get in the mail. Most news reporting Websites use this same format. Mark Beach and Elaine Floyd have written Newsletter Sourcebook to offer readers plenty of sample layouts and creative newsletter design assistance.
The book measures 8 1/2" by 11" and contains many full-colored examples of newsletter layouts and design tips. Many of the samples can be easily adapted for Website design purposes. Although this book is not intended to deal entirely with Website design principles, the placement of graphic images, the effective use of colors, the creative use of columns, the struc! ture of text, and font selection can assist Website designers to produce top-notch newsletter Websites. A number of Website screen shots are provided to display the impact made by online newsletters.
With a little re-working this book could easily pass for a Website design handbook. The advantages of using this book are crystal clear. The authors have been in the newsletter business for many years. This book is proof of it. Their experience is demonstrated by the detailed work exhibited throughout. Anyone can achieve similar results. Additionally, when time is short the Website designer can quickly thumb through this book for easy ideas to put to use. All that is necessary is basic knowledge of HTML programming and/or the use of good Website design software programs.
Begin creating newsworthy Websites, newsletters, and other forms of promotional literature for yourself and for others with this great resource book today. This is a must-have book!
