Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

My friend loaned this book to me and over time I was not able to find it. I ordered this one to replace the first one. When I got it in the mail (in excellent condition--I don't return less than what I borrow) my daughter said, "but that book is...." and she proceeded to tell me where to find my friend's book. Oh well, I now have a copy too.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Different Contribution to Eschatology..........2006-09-05

With many endtimes books on the market, several by LaHaye and Ice, I'd expected that this book would be predictable and redundant, so was surprised that its unique combination of 50 colorful charts with instructive text indeed adds to prophecy comprehension. So, for example regarding the Temple Mount, instead of merely reading a historical and discriptive narrative, there's also the following--

Chart #34-The Tabernacle, Temple and Ark in History and Prophecy includes
- Timeline with descriptions ("Conquest and Settlement," "Monarchy," "Exile," etc.)
- Above, pictures of corresponding structures (Tabernacle, 1st Temple, 2nd Temple, Dome of the Rock, etc.)
- Below, descriptions (for ex, "Ark is built by Moses and Bezalel," "2nd Temple Enlarged (Herod)")
- Way above, glowing light pictures above only the structures that God dwelt in ("Shekinah glory")

Other helpful charts are #22-"75-Day Preparation for the Millenium" (the 75-Day Interval); # 28-"The Dispensations," and #34-"Ezekiel 40-48," which included "2-D Millenial Temple" and "Division of Land During the Millenium." Both the book dimensions and the quality, glossy pages make CHARTING THE END TIMES a possible coffee table book suitable for discussion-starting or for being easily found to inform anyone left behind after the rapture. Both LaHaye and Ice are "pre-trib, pre-mil dispensationalists," which is reflected in this book, and which just means that they think the rapture will happen before ("pre") a literal Tribulation period of 7 years before ("pre") a literal Millenium of a literal 1000 year reign of Christ on Earth. For readers not into LaHaye's bestselling LEFT BEHIND fiction series, I'm not either, yet I found this book impressive.

1 out of 5 stars Why continue to be deceived..........2006-06-26

Tim LaHaye, Jerry Jenkins, and others in the Pre-Trib circle, such as Ed Hindson, Tommy Ice, Chuck Missler, etc., continue to put forth the same deceptions that Hal Lindsey popularized decades ago. The notion of a pre-tribulation rapture is foreign to scripture, it is foreign to the teachings of the early Church, and it is grooming the Church for destruction through ignorance and lack of preparation for what is really coming. These men are novices and not prophecy "experts" or "scholars" by any stretch of the imagination; they are those who tickle the ears of gullible Christians. Why continue to be deceived? Tim Cohen, in his excellent book, "The AntiChrist and a Cup of Tea," provides biblically sound and testable evidence to show that the coming AntiChrist is known NOW. Not only that, the same author (Tim Cohen) has now put out the strongest presentation on the whole issue of the rapture EVER offered to the saints of God in Christ: "The REAL Rapture". If you really want to know the truth about the timing of the coming rapture, then you need to hear Tim Cohen's "The REAL Rapture" (based on a volume in his forthcoming "Messiah, History, and the Tribulation Period" series (see Prophecy House's web site, prophecyhouse dot com, for details on these items).

4 out of 5 stars Great Basic Guide.......2007-05-15

This book is terrific for people who are just starting to try to write. It breaks down every initial stumbling block of the craft into small pieces in ways that are easy for inexperienced writers to understand and model. For more experienced writers, it might be useful to see the mechanical process for things one already understands (even innately). However, this is not a stunningly useful book for writers with more than a little experience.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary..........2007-05-14

I read "Beginnings, Middles, and Ends" right after reading the (in my opinion) horrid "How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy" by Orson Scott Card, which seemed to me to be puffed up drivel. Ms. Kress's book was like a breath of fresh air. Her suggestions are helpful, her examples are wonderful without being self-promoting. She has a number of self-guided exercises that were basic and also, as a plus for beginners, build up writing confidence. If you are a beginner, or even intermediate writer, I would suggest not bothering with most of the books on the market on writing and read Ms. Kress's book first. I am a published writer of dark fantasy writing my first novel and found it extremely helpful. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous Short-Cut to Learning to Write Fiction.......2007-04-15

John Irving once commented that his experience at writing workshops & conferences taught him things about writing (e.g., voicing) that he would eventually have picked up anyway, but that he saved a lot of time by not having to learn it the hard way. That's the way I feel about Nancy Kress's wonderful Beginnings, Middles and Ends.

First of all -- and this matters -- Kress is a world-class writer of fiction herself. She's famous in the science fiction community, and she deserves to be. So when she, of all people, gives clues about creating good plots, one should listen. She's that marvelous (and rare) combination, a stunning writer who can also teach.

This book uses a very methodical approach, speaking of the different parts of a piece of fiction separately and specifically addressing how they interact. Each chapter really deserves to be read several times, as the attitudes she recommends for writers can solve problems all by themselves. At the end of each chapter is a set of exercises that significantly improve one's ability to interpolate the lessons.

Much of what she says in her book I was beginning to discover on my own, but to see it put into print solidifies and sharpens my view. Personally I was writing several different stories over the time during which I read the book, and I found that it helped instantly. I'm actually stuck on one or two stories right now, and I'm going to dive back into the Kress book to see how she can help me; I know she can.

I'd like to close by mentioning that this book was first recommended to me by a wonderful writer of romantic fan fiction who uses the pen name "st margarets." If you haven't read her stuff, you should; she appears on several online fan fiction archives.

4 out of 5 stars A must for aspiring authors.......2007-04-10

I found this to be a very valuable book! Almost every page got some highlighting. The book is a short, easy read but packed with good information. Kress really breaks it down in terms of what makes a good beginning, how to keep the middle from sagging, and writing an ending that will satisfy readers. The advice is clear and easy to understand. The book also includes lots of info for short-story writers (who often get forgotten in other books). It didn't get 5 stars because there are other books that I feel cover this topic and then some (Plot and Structure, for example). However I have quite a collection of fiction-writing books, so if this was the only one I had, it would have gotten the 5the star. Elements of Fiction Writing is a great series. I recommend it to all aspiring writers, especially Characters by Orson Scott Card.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice!.......2007-02-13

This is a wonderful book to keep around if you're a writer, one of the best in the "Elements of Fiction Writing" series. It helps you plot your story out in a logical manner, in order to make it unified from beginning to end, and as strong and as interesting as it can be. You'll want to read it with a notebook on hand, to take notes for your novel, and you'll probably want to underline and highlight sections, maybe leave Post-It notes on the pages that offer the best advice.

Beginnings: Are you unsure how to start your novel, how to make it intriguing enough that people will keep reading? Do you think you can make your characters interesting and real? What about the style and tone of your writing, can you keep it consistent with the setting and plot? Do you need a prologue?

Middles: Do you have everything plotted out, but somewhere around the middle you lose interest? Are you not sure what should happen next? Are the characters trying to take the story in a different direction than you intended? Or are you just overwhelmed with the idea that you're actually writing a novel?

Ends: Can you make your ending satisfying? Will your climax be logical and realistic, or are you having trouble making it fit with the rest of the story? Can you give the characters closure, or are there too many loose ends? Do you need an epilogue? Are you having trouble with the very last paragraph or sentence of the story?

No matter which part of your novel is giving you trouble, this book will help you set it all straight. It offers excellent advice for beginnings, middles, and ends, as well as unifying your entire novel.

5 out of 5 stars Just as the book's title said..............2007-06-28

Just as the title of this book said, this is a book about where famous persons are buried and also how they died.

I'm having so much fun reading this book because it gives a nice background about the famous person that died. Also, I did not know how 80% of the famous people in this book died, so those facts are a nice addition to the book (a sort of BONUS) .

There are other books out there that describe where famous people are buried, but I like this book the best because of the added BONUS of telling the reader how the persons died and some nice information about them, while they were still alive.

Very informative.

4 out of 5 stars Every thing you needed to know..........2007-04-16

Short descriptions on the deaths of famous people. I would have liked a little more detail regarding the circumstances of the deaths, and less about the location of the graves. Still a great read and would recommend it to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting facts I Never Knew..........2007-03-19

I love how I read about each person's career and accomplishments of their lives. And myths about their deaths and the real reason for their death exposed. Also where they are buried or perhaps they had their ashes scattered. Very interesting.

5 out of 5 stars The title says it all........2007-01-10

A great book for those of us who are fascinated by the "permanent addresses" of famous people who have passed on.
The book was extensively researched and has many photos of famous grave sites.

5 out of 5 stars "Graveyards are full of indispensible men." Charles de Gaulle.......2006-10-17

Tod Benoit has put together a wonderful little book that would be interesting to anyone. He tells us what happened to 450 well known people in their final years, how they died ,where they are buried and how to locate their graves. He covers people from all walks of life and no matter who picks up this book they are sure to find someone who they often wondered "what ever became of them"...and now they'll know.
I have been fascinated with Graveyards ever since I was a kid.Yes ,they can be macabre places,if you let them be;but if you are the curious type, they can be very interesting.
Tod tells us a bit about these people ,but the real interesting thing would be to visit these sites.Since they are scattered all over the country, that would be a monumental task. However; a visit to any graveyard can be an experience.
When I was a teen in the Army Cadets and on convoys, the popular place to set up the field kitchen was in the parking lot of small country churches. It was quiet, nobody aound and generally an old graveyard nearby. After eating, I would take a stroll, read some of the stones, and invariably find something of interest. You will find things like a whole family being wiped out by things like the Spanisk Flu in 1917. The grave of a soldier who sacrificed his life in some far off war or in the Civil War.Maybe a stone of some old fellow who reached the grand old age of 95 years, who had 5 wives along the way,and they are laying there by his side.
There is just no end to what you can stumble across;and whenever I get a chance and have a little time to spare ;I am never disappointed in what I come across.
I spend a lot of time Birdwatching all over the country and one often end up in a graveyard .It is those little ones way off on the back roads that hold the surprises.
For instance, when I was in Galway,Ireland,a few years ago,I had a morning to myself. I decided to check out an old graveyard in the center of town.I met up with a very popular sports figure who was on the cemetary restoration board of directors . He gave me a tour of the graveyard and showed me a plaque as a memorial to 300 sailors from the Spanish Armada who scrambled ashore after their ships had wrecked on the Irish coast. They were captured and all murdered by the British. The site was originally a monestary, but the British destroyed it and all the monk's graves had been covered up by a garbage dump, but now had been restored. He also pointed out a huge Celtic Cross that was made for the World's Fair in Chicago. After the fair it was shipped back to Ireland and erected as a family monument. I noticed that there was an iron bar, hasp and lock on one of those crypts a little larger than a coffin sitting on the ground. When I asked why the locked opening;he explained that there was not a body inside the crypt.Actually, there was a crypt for 6 below grade and this was an opening to the stairs. You learn something every day.
With the age of Internet,a search of many well known personalities will give their final demise and gravesites. Also many large cemetaries have books written by them covering gravesites and information of famous persons interred there.
Overall, a great book and shows how interesting graveyards and gravesites can be.

This book is very informative and so colorful! The pictures are incredible and it's very entertaining to read the actors' comments on their characters and the trilogy. 5 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes mith Jerry Bruckheimer from Pirates of the Caribbean.......2007-07-15

For every Pirates movie fan a must have. The Characters talking about things that happened during filming. You get to know them better by reading this, things that you never have read before in any other interview in magazines or on sites. Also very nice phatography by Jerry Bruckheimer. Pictures only published in this book. Whene you are reading this you get great respect for all those people who are working behind the scenes. Then you realise how huge the work is to build a set. You find very much information about how the movie comes to that what we see on the whitescreen. Enormous what a work is done to deliver these three movies for us to see. You read who created the final line "bring me that horizon" of the first movie.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-09-17

I'm one of the artists featured in the book. I have to say this is one book that I'm proud to have my name attached. Too often "Art of" books smack of kissing up to the producers and above the line folks. This is an "art of" book that doesn't lie. It's just a bunch of art. Period. Thanks to Jon Rogers at Disney for putting this together.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of the Pirates of the Caribbean.......2007-09-16

Ever wanted to see how they came they came up with the characters, settings, and more for the hit blockbuster trilogy Pirates of the Caribbean? Then you definitely should check this one out. The book is huge and bound in a beautiful leather cover. The pictures and illustrations are no less than amazing and are definitely worth the $$$ you're going to spend. So, if you are a Pirates of the Caribbean fan or just love artwork get this now!

4 out of 5 stars This is Quality.......2007-09-08

This is worth owning. The prints of the artwork are very large, as compared to other 'art of' books. I would have preferred artist liner notes though.

5 out of 5 stars Art of Pirates of the Caribbean--THIS IS THE WAY IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE DONE!.......2007-08-12

I am a big fan of "The Art of..." type books, and they are usually great fun and add to my enjoyment of the movie. "The Art of Pirates of the Caribbean", however, sets a new standard for quality in this type of book. From the faux-leather cover and binding, to the quality of the paper and the standards of the printing and color reproduction, this is the BEST book of its kind I have ever seen. Filled with fantastic art from all three movies, lavishly laid out...two page fold-out spreads; framable quality full page paintings and sketches..this book has it ALL. If you're a fan of the movies; appreciate great Pirate Art; or simply enjoy a lavishly produced movie book--BUY THIS BOOK (or as Capt. Jack would say--"Just go and steal it!")

4 out of 5 stars Sketches and concept art.......2007-07-28

The Art of the Pirates of the Caribbean is a 160-page hardcover priced at a hefty $50. Although the art covers all three movies, it is mostly sketches and concept art without explanatory text or behind the scenes discussion. As such, it's good eye candy, but not much else.

This is a book you can set on the coffee table for friends to flip through. However, as a huge fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, I was ready to devour this book and came away somewhat disappointed. The drawings are a mix of black-and-white and color of the characters, ships, scenes, and such. Some of the drawings are storyboards and there are a few fold out pages.

5 out of 5 stars A Pirate lover's eye candy.......2007-08-26

I LOVE Dorling-Kindersly Books! There has never been a publisher that has produced better visual guides to just about everything than DK. So it comes as no surprise that their volume on the third Pirates of the Caribbean film is a joy to look at. You either like the movies--or you don't. BUT, if you like them, the fantastic visual world they created is one of the main draws. This DK volume does the usual wonderful job of putting together a beautifully photographed collection of some of the most striking images from the film. The only problem with the book is, I wish it were longer!

4 out of 5 stars The uncompleted visual guide to Priates of the Caribbean.......2007-08-07

The book is very good, not only the content, but also the print. But it is still not a "complete" visual guide to Piates of the Caribbean, because the world map of the priates on the seven seas is not in the book, that make me very disappoint.

2 out of 5 stars Tired Of Depp and Bloom.......2007-08-06

Another POTC item that focuses on Depp and Bloom (yawn). Geoffrey Rush is a fabulous actor and is not receiving credit he deserves for his excellent performance as Barbossa. Rush is one of the most talented actors who plays many different characters. He is not tied down to one type of character like Depp and Bloom often are. I would only recommend this book to a die-hard Bloom or Depp fan.

5 out of 5 stars Story of Pirates of the Caribbean movies in color.......2007-07-15

Very nice storybook of the POTC trilogy. Full colored. The Characters and the ships with lots of details which every Pirate movie fan wants to know. For adults en growing up childeren. Much pictures and easy text.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and useful.......2007-06-13

My kids have found this to be a great reference tool as they write stories or make their own "Pirates of the Caribbean" story tapes. The pictures are great too.

    Book Description

At a time when the writing process is sometimes viewed as a seven-step recipe, with revision one of those steps, author Barry Lane inspires language arts teachers to approach the subject with flexibility and playfulness. He encourages both teachers and students to enjoy a sense of discovery and surprise in their writing, as well as to examine and explore their own distinct revising styles.

After "THE END" revises our concept of revision, illustrating it as a constant inventive search for new possibilities and divergent meanings, rather than mere correction or what students wearily refer to as "redoing." For students in upper elementary to secondary school and beyond, and for every teacher looking to develop a common language of craft in the classroom, After "THE END" is a book of practical ideas and applications that inspire the reader to put it down and put it to use.

This is an excellent book to aid in teaching writing to all ages. Recommend that every English teacher own and use these principles.

5 out of 5 stars Successful author, successful book, great ideas.......2004-02-27

I saw this book reviewed here on Amazon. I then went to the public library to review one of his other books. I liked what I saw. Then I bought this book based on the previous reviews and I'm very glad I did. It's definitely worth a 5 out of 5!

This book hits the sweet spot of what I'm trying to accomplish as a tutor to some junior high school students. Barry Lane's exercises and theories fit what I've learned so far in this fun, and sometimes hilarious, quest.

The book is easy to read, yet loaded with useful advice. Now that I've finished this book, I'll be getting his other books and most importantly: I'll be starting to implement his recommendations on teaching writing to children.

The author is a writing in instructor in New Hampshire/Vermont. The book has a useful bibliography and he often comments on important books throughout his chapters.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for writing teachers.......2001-09-19

Tired of trying to browbeat your students into revising their writing? Afraid you might scream if you have to slog through The Writing Process one more time? Try this welcome antedote. Humorously written but based on sound theory, Mr. Lane's book is chock-full of exercises that are fun, practical, easy to modify, and based on classroom experience. I've used them with third and fourth graders, high school students, and even teachers!
The book's first chapter, "Good Writing is Good Questions," is reason enough to buy the book. When we (or our students)
respond to a student's writing with questions about what we want to know more about, revision happens naturally.
"A large part of writing is simply trusting your own instincts and asking questions that will help you dig deep enough," Mr. Lane writes. Dig deep into this book. There's gold here.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, the ideas!.......2001-07-11

Mr. Lane's book is packed full of ideas for those who wish to find a way to make writing (especially revision) fun for students. The book addresses everything from voice and tone to conferencing and questioning in an effort to make writing truly a student's own (not just what a teacher wants). I find it to be an excellant resource as a new teacher.

5 out of 5 stars After the End by Barry Lane.......2001-06-24

For so long, I have found revision difficult to teach for primary students. This book is a wealth of information. The vignettes given as examples are entertaining and are the basis for numerous mini-lessons to guide students through revision painlessly and effectively. This book will remain on my desk throughout the year. I highly recommend it.

    Book Description

Fashion is a multibillion-dollar international business; it permeates our lives and our economies. Yet there has never been a book of solid, hard-hitting, uncompromising business/cultural/social journalism on this subject--because the fashion press is subsidized by the very industry it covers.

Teri Agins, however, covers the fashion beat for a publication that does not rely upon fashion advertising--and she is thereby uniquely unfettered and able to finally tell the whole truth about this gigantic, flamboyant, and endlessly fascinating business.

Her book traces an arc from the origins of couture and its apotheosis in the early part of this century to the advent of prjt-a-porter postWorld War II and the sweeping changes that have taken place as the century ends. It is an arc from when "fashion" was defined by elite French designers whose clothes could be afforded only by the global socialites--but whose designs were copied and followed by everyone else--to the point where the rules are set by the consumers, and the designers must follow them. It is an arc from class to mass; from art to commodity. Above all, it is the story of the triumph of marketing.

The narrative includes profiles of designers Emmanuel Ungaro, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Donna Karan, and Zoran, as well as retailers Marshall Field and the Gap.The End of Fashion is classy and stylish, filled with insider details; it is dishy and lively and fun--as well as astute and full of insights about how the changes in the fashion business have reflected changes in the culture over the last fifty years.Fashion is a multibillion-dollar international business; it permeates our lives and our economies. Yet there has never been a book of solid, hard-hitting, uncompromising business/cultural/social journalism on this subject--because the fashion press is subsidized by the very industry it covers.

4 out of 5 stars The download on the Fashion industry!.......2002-01-10

This is an interesting and well written business book about the fashion industry and some of its most important designers. The author describes the growth and changes in the fashion industry and the changing role of the customer and the designers. The books material is mainly focused on the US marketplace and the different stand-offs between ex. Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren, the growth of Armani and the Italian designers, and the decline of the French. The main thing is that it nowadays more comes down to great marketing and expensive ad budgets to stay successful, that great design techniques. Overall great insight into an industry mostly concerned on hype and over inflated egos.

    5 out of 5 stars a real eye opener.......2000-08-15

I love clothes and I consider myself a smart shopper...I don't buy labels and the most famous brand names. I shop for the best prices and clothes that are flattering on me. I follow Vogue and all the magazines, and I thought I knew what was going on. But this book really did open my eyes. The fashion business is really dog-eat-dog and all those big designers don't seem to really understand that real people don't spend $1000 on a dress, or as the author writes in the book, that the consumer is king. No wonder so many fashions don't sell. And those Paris designers, after reading this book I see that they really are not what they appear to be. They are so clueless and overrated. I also finally understood about the stock market and why Donna Karan's DKNY doesn't appeal to women like me anymore. The stories in this book were funny and factual and read really fast. I finished it over a few days. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Great reporting, mediocre analysis.......2000-08-07

The End of Fashion was an enjoyable read, with an amusing view into the belly of the fashion beast, but ultimately it did not tie together the major points it uncovered.

Agins writes about various the various forces that have fundamentally changed fashion -- societal shifts, the changing retail landscape, impatient public markets, licenscing mania and so on. However, it is frustrating that she does not explain how these forces fit together, or extrapolate them into a view of the future of fashion.

We do get good dose of fashion one-liners, such as Zoran's "give diamonds and jewelry to housekeeper", but the aftertaste of mediocre analysis persists.

    5 out of 5 stars Good perspective........2000-06-22

This book was very well written with an interesting perspective on the changes in society and the effect it has had on the fashion industry. The author has chosen a variety of examples to demonstrate her point on the direction fashion has taken and seems to be headed for the future.

    5 out of 5 stars Good.......2000-06-14

Interesting, business-view of fashion, that shows the indulgences of vain, shallow designers like Isaac Mizrahi, Donna Karan and Mossimo, whose idiocy was their downfall, and the more business-minded, but nonetheless creative, designers that flourish. Shallow, as only fashion can be, but interesting, too.
