Perfect book.......2007-07-17
This book is everything I hoped it would be. I am a novice painter, working in acrylics, and wanted some basic info on color theory. This is it. The information is comprehensive yet easy to understand with exercises for the reader to do in any medium. I was so impressed that I bought her Exploring Color Workbook to go with it. This is highly recommended for the artist wanting to expand her color theory expertise.
Wonderful exercises .......2007-05-14
I bought this based on other reviews about it. I don't know doodley about color and have always gone on gut instinct...and I've painted over a lot of ruined canvas and wasted a lot of paint.
This is an excellent little book with a lot of exercises to make it all quite clear. Every page teaches me something - I have so far had quite a few "AHA" moments. I am beginning to understand why sometimes a color works and sometimes it is just a little off...
I recommend this for everyone. Thank you Nita Leland.
Exploring Color Book.......2007-01-26
This is one of the best books available to artists who want to learn to mix colors without creating mud, to maintain transparency of colors, and to mix grays. The workbood that goes with this book is great for any beginning watercolor artist. I recommend this book with all of my beginning students.
Color up a notch.......2007-01-23
When I read this book I considered myself and intermediate painter. This book cranked me up a notch. It is full of useful, well stated information that inspired me to try new things, and refine what I already knew. It would be useful to new and intermediate painters.
Awsome art technique book, widely applicable.......2006-07-14
Wow! "Exploring Color" lived up to all of the 5-star reviews, and surpassed them all. I've never been able to say that about a book before. This book focuses mainly on the use of color in artwork -- why some color schemes work, and why others fail. Many other topics are covered and related to back to the use of color, such as composition, presentation, design and types of contrast. Example pictures are taken from a wide range of artwork in different mediums by various artists -- simply wonderful! After each description, the author inserts an exercise for the reader, to help you understand and apply the principle presented. These exercises can be done in any medium (watercolor, oil, pastel, cloth, etc.), and far surpass the "paint by number/follow me" exercises in books aimed at nervous beginners.
"Exploring Color " targets intermediate to advanced artists. Beginers should give it a chance, also. Try it, you'll be wowed.

Book Description
Beaders everywhere—from rank beginners to top-level artists—are discovering the extraordinary creative potential and pleasure of a seemingly simple craft: making unique, one-of-a-kind beads from existing beads themselves. This lushly illustrated guide offers them a blast of inspiration, with 40 fabulous designs from some of today’s finest beadwork artists. Ranging from understated to pure dazzling glam, these projects showcase a range of innovative techniques. Among the standouts: a peyote-stitched Tetrahedron Beaded Bead that can be produced in varying sizes; a Peek-A-Boo Bead, using steel nuts from the hardware store; and a cylinder-shaped Piñata Bead, decorated with smaller beads resembling tiny, colorful party balloons. Detailed instructions and photos make the crafting easy, and there’s encouragement for readers eager to incorporate their own design ideas.
A Selection of the Crafters Choice Book Club.
Customer Reviews:
The Art Of Beaded Beads.......2007-07-23
Very informative and creative. Opens up so many possibilities and designs. Well written and easy to follow.
Beads of a Feather.......2007-07-09
Wonderful book. Great project ideas and techniques. Not for the very beginner, however. But the photos alone will inspire you to learn
The Art of Beaded Beads - excellent.......2007-05-13
Fabulous book with good pictures. Most of the designs are a little more than the beginner would want to try but the beads you CAN make, with some effort, are quite fantastic.
A fun beaded beads book.......2007-05-10
Positives:
1.Great beading charts for the seed bead ones,
2.A range of techniques explored
3. Some ugly duds, but one person's dud is another person's focal point beauty,
Not too much exploration of color in beadwork, but a useful book for beaders. It is good for beginners who want to learn three dimensional techniques.
Outstanding Designs.......2007-05-09
The designs are inspiring and the directions are easy to follow. A must-own book for any serious beader.

Book Description
Exploring Color Coloring Book is a hands-on workbook based on Nita Leland's best-selling book, Exploring Color. Printed on 140# acid-free watercolor paper, the book contains more than forty blank color theory charts, with extra pages for sketching. Users fill in the charts with their choice of medium in the recommended colors or the colors they already have, following instructions on each page. The result is a useful color- reference book in a handy, take-along size (8 1/2" x 11") for students and outdoor painters. The workbook can be used by beginners, as well as teachers and professional artists, by adapting the instructions to almost any medium: acrylics, oils, watercolors, pastels, colored pencils, fibers and collage materials. (Exploring Color, the original text, is helpful, but not required to do the charts.)
Customer Reviews:
Paint yourself a reference manual.......2001-02-10
I have several books on color theory in watercolor and allrecommend that you do exercises to practice choosing apallette.
This book is cleverly printed on 140 lb watercolor paper,a very useful weight as it won't buckle very much when wetted... Someof Handprint's pallettes are those of other well known watercolorists,so this is a good place to visit if you buy this book.
The bookhas exercises on each page; so put in extra sheets of 140 poundwatercolor paper along side for any other pallettes you try out or foryour own developments. If you do pastel, acrylic or colored pencil, this book works just as well.
Coloring Book Really Teaches.......2000-07-04
I recommend Nita Leland's Coloring Book for leaning colors and keeping a record. Before I've done color exercises here and there but never could keep up with the different pieces of paper; the book provides a record that's always available. Just finished the Split Primary page and found it very helpful. I think these exercises will help my painting. This book can be a compainion workbook to Leland's "Exploring Color" but it also stands on it's own.

Here is an authoritative, comprehensive, practical resource for understanding the ideas, images, history, and processes of color photography. It shows readers how theory relates to practice with hands-on examples and activities and includes a diverse portfolio of work from 200 photographers along with their commentary. A tear-out 18% gray card, color checker, and sliding gray scale (items that bought separately would cost more than the book!) are also included.

START EXPLORING(tm) Masterpieces - A Fact-Filled Coloring Book.......2006-10-18
It's a starter book for the young. I would have liked to have the orginal picture with the color pages, plus the detail is lacking. If you are looking at introducing a kid to the arts this is the book that you need.
Wonderful.......2006-04-23
I just got this book.. very nice and informative, the paintings history and other information is inside but not included the original paintings , so I have no Idea what's the colors of the painting, atleast a thumbnail will do. Other than that it's a wonderful addition to my collections of art books. :-)
Makes Learning Fun.......2004-10-19
This neat book is a great way to help your child or student learn about art and the great masterpieces (or yourself, if you prefer to use a fun method to teach yourself). Users get to color masterpieces in their own way, and the opposite page gives a brief, easy-to-read-and-understand description of the work of art and artist.
Coloring books tend to be useful tools in teaching children, as they are interactive and fun, and they make what could be a complex subject accessible to children -- which is pretty cool!
There are more books in this series, and they look great, too.
Excellent.......2003-08-08
If you are an art teacher, this book is worth the buy. I have used it over and over again! I found it by way of another art teacher. It can be used in primary and secondary art classes. I reccomend this book all the way.
Wonderful resource for any art teacher.......2002-12-30
This book is a great resource for any art teacher. I am an elementary (k-6) art teacher and I use these coloring book pages for my students to help re-enforce the art history lessons that I use in the classroom. It is great for them to see and color a copy of a painting that they have learned about at the end of the lesson, and they have a masterpiece to take home with them. I have used them with all my students, and all age ranges. Some of them are a little difficult for the kindergarteners because the pictures are very detailed...but it is a great way to help develop those fine motor skills for the little ones. My students love to color their own masterpieces after we have discussed the actual painting in the classroom. I use this at least once a week, and the interesting facts that accompany every painting are well written and concise.

The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes
ASIN: 0072407069 |
Book Description
Exploring Color Photography is a flexible, multiple duty text that clearly and concisely instructs students in the fundamental aesthetic and technical concepts needed to create thought provoking photographs in both the digital and the analogue processes. This conceptual approach will not be rapidly outdated, nor will it get students bogged down in complex technical matters. Coverage of Light, Design, Color, Movement, Time, and Space, and Presentation is pertinent to all levels of photographic education.
A comprehensive, diverse, high-quality art program stresses a multitude of approaches through its inspiring visual examples and well-structured illustrative informational charts and tables.
Exploring Color Photography's thoughtful assignments encourage students to be adventurous and to take responsibility for learning and working independently. The emphasis on design and postmodern theoretical concepts stresses the thought process behind the creation of successful images. Image captions give insight into how imagemakers apply technology in the service of their ideas. A "Problem Solving and Writing" chapter offers methods and exercises that help students learn to be visual problem solvers and to talk and write succinctly about the ideas at the foundation of their work.
From the journal Afterimage, November/December 2004, page 15:
"A textbook for college-level students and serious amateurs with a historical and pragmatic approach. Theory is related to practice and it is abundantly illustrated by original works form various sources and many professional practitioners and artists. The digital section has been expanded. Hirsch accompanies his "lectures" with creative assignments for the reader to complete."
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Service and Condition.......2005-10-05
I bought the book, Exploring Color Photography: From the Darkroom to the Digital Studio by Robert Hirsch, and the book is excellent! The person that I bought it from, shipped it fast and in perfect condition.
Review from AlternativePhotography.com.......2005-07-24
This book covers everything from the history of color photography to color theory, filters, film, digital photography, preservation and even breezes over some alternative processes at the end (thumbs up!).
"Assignments" thoughout the book encourages your own thinking and the development of your skills, and if you don't mind the "textbook" approach, they are very useful.
The book does indeed feel like a complete guide to color.

Customer Reviews:
What a wonderful way of teaching. Bravo!.......1998-03-24
Susan Hogan's book is a fascinating exploration of several different cultures through their art, their customs, geography and history. Her insight into the nature of the different societies brings a deep understanding of how art has been interwoven with the needs and rituals of that society. It also points out the need for us to use our hands, our minds and emotions - expecially in this electronic age. It brings us back to ourselves, to make these things with our hands. I have worked with children of different ages for more than a decade. I find the students really enjoy the easy to do projects that help them produce beautiful articles they can actually use. What a wonderful way of teaching. Bravo!
A resource that real teachers can use with real students.......1998-03-15
This book is not going to get dusty on the shelf. It is a real resource--for art teachers, social studies teachers, home schoolers and anyone else who wants to use art to teach world culture (or conversely world culture to teach art). The lessons makes sense. The art projects are doable. This book had been well thought out. It's also been tested with real students. It is ideal for teachers who want to do multi-cultural education and not just talk about it.

Customer Reviews:
I wanted to like this book...but did not.......2006-08-11
I bought this book to solve a problem I have a fairly large backstock of a novelty yarn and when the purchasing haze cleared, I wasn't sure what I'd do with it. I was hoping this book would give me ideas....especially on work-a-bility of patterns with challenging yarn. That is perhaps not a fair test, I admit.
This book is loaded with designs for fizzy, hairy yarns. As a result, everything looks very dated. I found almost nothing that would work with "my" novelty yarn, a slubby Gedifra number. I would wear almost nothing I see in this book.
Great source for yarn descriptions.......2006-03-07
I was looking for a primer on yarns. The first part of this book catagorizes yarns and describes the characteristics very well. I highly recommend the book if you are interested in yarn characteristics. The section of patterns was fun to glance through, but I don't intend to make any of them.
One of the Best.......2003-10-18
I found this book very inspirational. The beautiful color images of the knitted pieces made from unique combinations of novelty yarns offered many ideas for my own work. Seeing both Militzer's version and Klein's version of the same pattern provokes very different design concepts as well as color use. Excellent resource, I find I go back to it regularly for inspiration.
A busy knitter.
Disappointing.......2001-09-04
I was totally prepared to love this book, but when I read it, I found it to be quite disappointing. Whilst it has two or three helpful tips for knitting with novelty yarn and a gazillion gorgeous closeups of totally luscious yarns, it doesn't begin to go anywhere near the "Exploration of Color, Texture, and Style" promised in the title. In fact, aside from a few swatches knit with novelty yarns, it doesn't explore anything at all.
Much of the information in the book has to do with correcting faults in sweaters, information that is presented more thoroughly in many other books. I was expecting something of the quality of Sally Melville's Styles (an excellent book that delves into the many uses for oddments).
This book just doesn't fulfill it's promise of being a creative exploration. It's just a pattern book with a tip or two on fit, nothing more. And quite honestly, the designs are mostly dated (unless you're on a 1980's retro kick), and some are downright ugly.
I tried to like it, but it just didn't offer me anything.
What a Great Book!.......2001-08-16
This is a wonderful and creative book. One can almost feel the yarns texture from the lovely photos. This is one of those books that inspires even if you don't think there's another sweater in you. I can't wait to open up my stash and get going on one of these beauties.
