Book Description
DIRTY WOW WOW AND OTHER LOVE STORIES is a celebration of the lovey, binky, or blankie--known as the "transitional object" in psychoanalytic terms--that eased us through the uncertainties and loneliness of childhood. Bundles of comfort and security fashioned from fluff and fur, these treasured friends have a lifetime of stories sewn up in their tattered bodies: a trip to Paris smushed up in a suitcase, a new home behind the family liquor cabinet, an interminable wait in the lost-and-found bin. With stunning photographs that reveal the personalities within, DIRTY WOW WOW is at once humorous, wistful, and oddly comforting--like a shabby childhood favorite who's tucked away but never forgotten.

So-so.......2007-09-01
I agree with the reviewer that said this book was just so-so - I really thought this a great book concept and was looking forward to heartwarming stories of people who remember their toys fondly, and funny pictures of wretched, worn, well-loved toys. However, the authors seem to fall short of the promised delivery on the cover - one of the "toys" was simply a photo of torn up cloth and the entry was called "Rags"...and the "story" was about how children may take to rags instead of stuffed toys. I felt a bit cheated. I would much have preferred real people and real stories about their stuff - maybe a photo of an interviewee and toy today and his/her childhood photo clutching the toy when new. I always loved those photos. But this book doesn't have such things - it seems superficial, more an artsy pretty photo book than a book where real legwork was taken to uncover the stories.
Wow, wow - what fun!.......2007-07-25
This is a darling book of photographs and loving tributes to some of the scruffiest and best loved of childhood "lovies". It's currently getting much attention as my coffee table book and is bringing both smiles and sighs of remembrance to our visitors. I wish only that my own "Lindy", "Andy Pandy", "Ted" and "Snoozer" had been honored among its pages.
Dirt Wow Wow and Other Love Stories: A Tribute to the Threadbare Companions of Childhood.......2007-07-15
I so wanted this book to be wonderful, but I found it just so-so. I'm going to return both copies, since I don't feel right giving a friend something I don't treasure. Sorry :-(
Sweet Memories.......2007-07-04
I received this book as a gift and immediately had to order it as a gift for my sister who turns 65 next week. Her threadbare companion until our family left it in a motel enroute from Chicago to Seattle, was a small down pillow, called her "My My". She was only four years old, I was nine and I can still remember her cries of anguish.
Almost anyone can relate to this charming book.
Hilarious!.......2007-07-03
The book made me laugh out loud! Both the pictures and the commentary are hilarious! A real treasure!

Revised and updated, this classic potter's volume explains everything from preparation through firing, with stops along the way for detailed coverage of working on the wheel; coiled, slab, and pinch pots; mold making; slip casting; and glazing and decorating. The comprehensive text ranges from basic (wedging and kneading, beginning wheelwork) to advanced (spray glazing, raku firing). The no-frills design of the book packs almost too much information on a page, but the instructions are clear and thorough, the photos (more than 450, all in color) are straightforward and helpful, and the stunning examples of work by contemporary potters provide additional inspiration.

Great book.......2007-03-08
Very informative with great step-by-step photos also. This book is really good at showing a wide variety of techniques and including historical information that is really interesting.
A good overivew excellent for beginners.......2006-07-14
This book is a nice addition to any beginner potter's library. It is not in depth but offers a wide variety in information that is useful and helpful. It is most definatly in my 'top 10' of pottery books.
Great for beginners!.......2005-08-21
I'm new to pottery and found this book to be informative. I also found many creative ideas that sparked my own creativity.
Pretty book, but shallow.......2005-03-21
This is a very pretty book, and it does cover a breadth of material, but it's very shallow. An entire book could be devoted to each chapter. It provides a good overview of what can be done with clay, but in the end, I have to turn to other books to get more than a cursory understanding of individual processes.
For all pot throwers.......2003-02-19
What a great book for all of us clay lovers. Not overwhelming yet offers information on about everything you need to know. I've had this book for several years and I keep getting out again and again.

Customer Reviews:
reference, user friendly.......2007-05-17
One of the first spinning books I purchased, easy to use, indexed well, spiral bound and small enough to take along in my knitting/ spinning supplies.
A reference book I am always picking up to read; pest controls, hand carding, different spinning methods, washing yarn. Also a good bibliography for further reading.
Indispensable!.......2006-09-07
I'm a brand new spinner, and this book has helped me immensely. It has helped me to better understand the parts of the wheel and what they do, how to draft, how to troubleshoot problems such as the yarn not winding onto the bobbin or overtwisting. It has a wealth of information about all aspects of spinning, from start to finish, in a concise and useful format. The way the book is constructed so you can stand it up and refer to it while spinning is also a big plus. Highly recommended!
Right On.......2006-02-25
Great little book to chuck in with the traveling wheel/spindle gives the pertinent information with reasonable pictures easy to use, easy to pack has become a constant companion. Coil bound with heavy card pages lays flat even outdoors.
a good book for those just starting their library.......2002-03-01
If you've just learned to spin, this book will enhance your library. It is very clear and complete. It explains all those terms that get thrown around.... Grist, twist, ratio... This book will help you keep it all straight.
Don't Spin Without It.......2001-12-11
I had enough money to buy one book and picked this one over the Amos Big Book of Handspinning. Its compact size is perfect for keeping in my workbasket, it is also a perfect size for "going on the road." The information is clearly presented and valuable. And...it lacks the demeaning comments of the Amos book, for those spinners that use double tredle.

Book Description
A beautiful and informative reference on the Arts and Crafts movement, one of the most popular design styles in the U.S. today. As a movement dedicated to the revival of traditional craftsmanship following the early mass production of the mid-19th century, Arts and Crafts evolved on both sides of the Atlantic, and its style became instantly recognizable. THE ARTS CRAFTS COMPANION traces the origins of the movement; discusses the personalities involved, such as William Morris, Edwin Lutyens, and Frank Lloyd Wright; and includes comprehensive chapters devoted to all aspects of Arts and Crafts style-architecture, interiors, furniture, wallpaper, textiles, applied arts, lighting, tiles and ceramics, glass and pottery, metalwork, embroidery, and the garden. Listings of manufacturers with illustrative samples, as well as an extensive source list, make this not only a beautiful volume for the casual admirer but an invaluable reference for the most ardent collector.
Customer Reviews:
Must have for the Arts and Crafts Enthusiast.......2007-09-01
If you've purchased several books about decorating with Arts and Crafts style and wish to get a more in-depth knowledge of the movement, it's proponents and influences, then this is the book for you. From William Morris to Gustav Stickley, Jane Addams to Frank Lloyd Wright, the author covers the who's who of the movemement, large and small. The book is full of excellent photographs and covers a broad spectrum of the styles popular in Europe and America and how it's design philosophy was incorporated into everything from jewelry to homes. When one thinks of the Arts and Crafts style, Stickley's Craftsman style usually is one of the first things that comes to mind. The "Arts and Crafts Companion" quickly proves that there is much more to the style including Nouveau, Minimalist and Japanese influences. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a great reference book as well as to learn much more about the Arts and Crafts movement.
Great buy--you won't regret it.......2006-02-07
This book is informative, well indexed and offers great quality with regard to print, photographic images and text for the price. Very readable.
Excellent, beautifully done reference.......2004-06-18
I really enjoyed this on several levels. It's a beautifully produced book, with gorgeous illustrations and photographs, and it provides a very good introduction to the Arts and Crafts movement. The book includes information about its origins and leading exponents, and sections on archutecture, furniture, design, and crafts, all copiously illustrated. There is also a list of sources in the back. This book is excellent for browsers, for those wanting a good introduction to the Arts and Crafts movement, or for those who just like beautiful art books.

Excellent Reference Book.......2007-09-19
After having taken a week long course in beading and then returning to the "real world" where I did not get to bead for a few weeks, I found that I could easily pick up this book for a quick review and follow the step by step instructions easily and with excellent results. I also own the same series for knitting and have referred to that for years when I needed a review. I believe that even a beginner with no previous experience would be able to follow the instructions with success. The book covers a good range of techniques with background info on the supplies as well. A definate for any beaders library.
very good reference.......2007-07-11
A helpful tool for any beader!
Contains information about bead types, bead sizing, useful materials (needles, waxes threads etc), stitches types, stringing, beads in crochet, knitting, wirework, embroidery and macramé.
Small and simple to use, but I feel that I need to mention that this book is a reference and not to learn how to bead.
I mostly refer to it when I'm creating my own projects (I may have something in mind and I need to find a most effective way to develop it).
I was a little bit disappointed when I searched for peyote stitch- edge increase (not included) but overall the book is great and well presented.
Design of book and contents helpful.......2007-05-30
I am fairly new at beading and found this book to be simple to understand and informative. The top spiral-bound book is easy to read and look up. It is a basic book that explains things clearly.
Beading Reference.......2007-04-10
This little book is jam-crammed with info essential to beaders whether beginner or long-time addict! Get it and keep it close for reference!
The New Beader's Companion.......2007-03-10
I received this book in a very timely manner and in great condition and at a wonderful price. I would definitely use your service over almost all the others I have dealt with. Thanks again.
Book Description
An essential reference for anyone who wants to dye fabric or yarns, this accessible guide offers indispensable information on equipment and supplies, types of dye, safety procedures, and record keeping. Step-by-step dye recipes that produce consistent and successful results are provided. Beginners will gain the confidence to add color to fiber while seasoned textile artisans will discover useful tips and hints. An eight-page color section with 100 skeins of yarn in a range of color gradations and an explanation of the fundamentals of color theory provide dyers with encouragement to explore their own dyeing variations.
Customer Reviews:
Essential to anyone interested in dyeing yarn.......2005-08-22
From indigo to synthetic vat dyes, the procedures, safety precautions and methods to create your own beautifully custom colored yarns is in this small but power-packed spiral manual. I myself had prepared an indigo bath once, and enjoyed watching the slightly yellow bath turn greenish yarn startlingly blue-jeans blue when shaken in air (Utterly fascinating. If you teach school chemistry or home school, this manual could be a semester of science work.)
Everything is included here, from equipment to recipes to weights and measures. In addition are suggestions on how to keep records (important if you want to reproduce anything again, and a full color section of yarn swatches.)
Dyeing is fun, whether you use Kool-Aid food dye or prepare natural materials like barks, roots or berries. But there are safety measures to heed, so I recommend this book as an essential if you want to undertake this art in your fiber work.
Packing in everything from dyeing recipes to disposal advice.......2005-03-11
Any crafter who works with fibers and fabric and is interested in custom dye work will consider this little spiral-bound book an essential reference packing in everything from dyeing recipes to disposal advice and a color section of color-graduated yarn samples. The Dyer's Companion is no mere 'how to tye dye' craft book, but a serious fabric artist's guide to working with color in diverse materials.

BEAUTIFUL REFERENCE BOOK.......2007-08-08
Don't let the title fool you, Hot Wheels the Ultimate Redline Guide Companion covers much more than just Redlines. It does adhere to the period of 1968 - 1977, but it covers a whole host of Hot Wheels products produced during that period including Chopcycles, Hot Birds, Hot Shots, RRRumblers, SmallShots, Zowees, and a new chapter in this second edition on Gran Toros. As with all every title from Collector Books the production is first rate with very colorful and sharp photography all in a heavy duty hard cover book. The usual matter on things like grading and pricing leads things off before we get into the first of over a dozen different chapters on various Hot Wheels lines and accessories.
Each chapter opens with a bit of history and reference information about that particular line of Hot Wheels such as the year the line was introduced, how many vehicles were in each series, etc...The Gran Toros section is particularly interesting as this joint venture between Mattel and Mebetoys of Italy is largely unknown to all but the most avid Hot Wheels collectors and is a welcome addition to the guide. This is a truly beautiful line featuring vehicles such as the Lamborghini Miura, Mustang Boss 302, Porsche Carrera 10, and the Ferrari P4.
The Sizzlers section shows an overview of the cars and then shows each car on its own page with a large close-up view, and then with several smaller pictures displaying some of the various color variations for each car along with a price grade table for mint loose cars and MIP cars. Each car again features background into on the model, noting specific features about each such if it came with decals or not. It's interesting to note that often there isn't a great deal of difference between the price on a loose mint car and one in the package. It certainly differs by the model and the disparity is greater on the cars which are more rare, of course.
One thing I loved about the Sizzlers section was all the photos of the great accessories such as the various track sets. These show a picture of the packaging along with a checklist of all of the components in the set which is very useful. This book is a great reference title for any level of Hot Wheels collector and the photography is second to none.

Quilting Techniques.......2006-11-15
Purchased as a gift for the quilter in the family. She loves it. Said it gave her a little insight into the preplanning of machine quilting.
An average book.......2004-11-24
This book came free with my embroidery machine. The companion cd has some cute shapes that I plan to use, but the projects are pretty lame. I would not have bought the book given a choice. But since it is the only one of its kind that I have, I'm using it and am about to finish a quilt with a shape from the cd.
