5 out of 5 stars A most.......2007-08-31

I rebuilt my bathroom and completely renovated the shower. This book was my bible. Of course I had other references and ideas to use, but pretty much kept to this book. I had it there by my side while constructing everything from the shower pan, shower walls and tiling it all. Sure I could have done it without this book and my wife would have made me hire a professional to redo my job.

Not to brag, but with the advice from this book people think that a professional DID remodel my bathroom. There is so much satisfaction in doing it yourself and to get a the results as good (and sometimes better) as a pro...

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview.......2007-06-22

John Bridge has put together an excellent reference for the experienced and novice tile setter alike, and if you're looking to learn the basics to put together a project for the first time, this book is a must read. John's light, conversational style makes the book a quick read, and as mentioned in another review, the online forum on the author's website is also an invaluable reference.

Highly recommended to those who need a to learn the ABCs of tile.

5 out of 5 stars Tile Your World.......2007-05-13

I bought the bookas a gift for a friend who is quite interested in home renovation technique. She was thrilled by it and judging by her reaction, it must be an informative and well written book.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know!.......2007-02-13

This is the ultimate book for tile setters and for those who want to be tile setters. John focuse on all of the little things that the amateurs don't. focus on. The actual tiling itself is the last thing he focuse on. He will teach you the science of laying different types of tiles. You will learn everyting from floor deflection to room layout to determing the square footage and much more. I even learned of a new underlayment product made by Schluter that does not transfer cracks to the tiles due to structural movement and also a waterproofing membrane to use in shower tile installations! I have learned so much Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for me - Novice/JOAT.......2007-02-06

We recently built our new home & I used this book & Setting Tile (Fine Homebuilding) to do all the tile work. One of our best & proudest features is the masterbath I built with lg garden tub and oversized corner dual head shower with dual niche all tiled together - We love it. I can't believe I was able to do it all with friends & family and alot of sweat/work.

Saved thousands over best few estimates. I see why the labor is so pricy now....

Recommend both books.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

A celebration in words and breathtaking images of thirty-five landscapes created for private clients by today's preeminent designers.

This is a time of renewed originality in garden design. The last twenty years have seen a lucky confluence of money and talent lavished on gardening, and the results are surprising, enchanting, sometimes even controversial. The range of possibilities suggested by these thirty-five gardens is extraordinary: from Jacques Wirtz's undulating beech hedges that recede mysteriously into the mist to Penelope Hobhouse's latest interpretation of the traditional English garden, to Martha Schwartz's Texas creation of red, yellow, and pink painted garden rooms.

These hidden masterworks of modern gardening are unlocked for us by the authority, experience, and resources of House & Garden magazine. Every page is an invitation to explore landscapes that have never before been seen by the public—and may never be seen again. International in scope and lavish in its production, this book is the last word on the state of design in the garden world. 340 color photographs.

5 out of 5 stars A tour around the best gardens in the world.......2007-05-08

This book is huge and a most for garden reference. It's organized in seven chapters that will impress all kind of taste:

The New Classicism: Magical gardens from places such as NY, Spain, Germany...+
The New Traditionalism: Enchanting pictures from NY, IL, France, Japan...+
The New Naturalism: Beautiful gardens from NY, Idaho, France, Arizona, England.
The Plantsmen: Magnificent proposals from New England, California, The Netherlands...+
Personal Visions: NY, California, and Texas
The Cottage Garden Reinvented: Lovely gardens from England, France and Ireland.
The New Modernism: The best and trendiest gardens of California.

You'll be able to see some of the best gardens from places such as Arizona to Japan. Some of my favorites gardens where from England, The Netherlands and France.

The text is pleasant to read and full of details no only about the flowers portrayed but also to the architect and artist that created such beauty. The balance of text and picture is excellent. The quality of the pictures is excellent, full pages pictures trout the book. House and Gardens did a tremendous job and it's absolutely clear that the took at least ten times the number of pictures in the book since you'll only see the best angle and light possible for each picture.

The only con is the lacks of tropical gardens since most part of the book are focus on the northern hemisphere.

4 out of 5 stars Big book, big gardens, big budgets.......2006-02-28

This coffee table book features private gardens and estates of the wealthy who have the funds to hire the most talented garden designers in the world to realize their visions. Most of the gardens featured are in the U.S. although a few are in England and Japan. Chapters are divided by varying styles, such as classicism, traditionalism, naturalism, cottage garden, modernism, etc. It is an eclectic collection, from minimalist elegance to lush romantic woodlands. Sculptures, art work, water features and stone work are a feature in many.

Chapter names tout the garden designer which includes such talents as Patrick Chasse, Dan Pearson, Jacques Wirtz, Dan Kiley, Piet Oudolf, Martha Swartz, Sarah Raven, Christian Louboutin, Isabelle Greene, Penelope Hobhouse, Topher Delaney and Steve Martino. The owners of the gardens are rarely mentioned (with the exception of actors Brad Pitt and Tim Curry and a few others). Although the text is often stuffy and oft-putting, the photographs alone are reason enough to purchase the book. This beautiful book is wonderful for garden dreamers who will find gardens such as these unattainable.

Book Description

Millions of Christians around the world are becoming aware of an imminent reformation of global proportions within the Church. God is changing this revered institution and is making a new collective awareness of an age-old revelation, a corporate spiritual echo that reflects God's desire for the Church.

In this book, Wolfgang Simson brings to light what God is saying to Christians everywhere. Researched across the globe, he presents the case for the reformation of the Church's existence. In a world where the Church is being ignored, it is time to bring the Church to the people, and not the people to the Church. Whether it is what we know as 'Church' from the last five years or last five hundred year, no one has truly been able to break free from the structures of the past. Many may see this book as radical, many may see it as a reforming of old ideals, but all who read it will be challenged in their Churching and have their priorities refocused in a life-changing way.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good but just misses the mark.......2007-09-07

First of all I need to say that I really do like Wolfgang (and not just because Wolfgang is such a cool name). ;) I like how this guy thinks about a lot of things and there really is some very good insights in this book.

Where I feel he misses the mark a bit is making "house church" THE focus. There is nothing in Scripture or even early Christian history known as "house churching." There is no mention of anyone "starting a house church" or any concept of a "church" being represented by a building of any kind. The early Church simply happened to meet wherever convenient. Sometimes it was in their homes (most frequently in fact), sometimes by riversides, sometimes in the catacombs (when persecution hit), sometimes in Solomon's Porch, etc. The "Church" (New Testament Greek: ecclesia) simply means "assembly" and refers to PEOPLE not buildings or programs. Wolfgang acknowledges this truth, but still makes a bit too much of the house detail in my opinion.

The logic of "house church" is really much the same logic as "institutional church" because both incorrectly define church in connection with a physical place (and place it in a separate category from every day life itself), rather than the simple revelation that the Church is the body of Christ (as Ephesians so plainly says), regardless of where or when meetings may (or may not) occur. In my opinion, to make "house churching" the focus is to actually MISS the focus. Christ (who is the Head of His body - the Church) should be our one united focus - not "doing church" (for you can't "do" what you already "are" in Christ. Anytime we try to compartmentalize and/or define our faith in Jesus and our walk with each other along the path into specialized meetings or meeting places, we cause a division between faith and true fellowship. Please understand, I am not at all suggesting that meetings are wrong and certainly, if we are going to meet at all, it will most often be some "place", but I am talking primarily about defining our faith according to these things. I will admit that the house church model is a much better step in the right direction than institutional churchianity, precisely because it does bring faith much closer to a family paradigm... just not close enough for my taste. ;) Ain't I the picky one? Most of the house churches I have been acquainted with struggle with a lot of the same mindsets and religious tendencies as institutional churches, only on a smaller scale. You still have power struggles, religious organization, and often unbiblical expectations of "qualified" fellowship placed on the group. Granted we all err and some will disagree with my conviction here and so I say thank You Lord for grace and let each one live true to their measure of knowledge, conviction and conscience.

If you can avoid letting this detail distract you, there will be much good to glean from Simpson's work. I sincerely mean no disrespect to my brother in Jesus and I love much of the encouragement found in his 15 theses for church reformation, I simply contend that since the Church is Christ's body it does not need "re-forming" at all and certainly not by another attempt of man (however noble and well-intentioned). I believe strongly that Jesus Christ is building His Church (and His Church is not defective) and if our endeavors (the things we like to title church) don't align with His definition, than we need not re-form anything but rather repent of our dead works, come away from them, and follow only Him. There's nothing to start, nothing to build, nothing to preoccupy with - but simply ONE PERSON to align ourselves with and let the rest of the pieces fall into place.

I think Wolfgang would agree in a large sense with my general conclusion about the biblical nature of the Church and may even believe that this is the primary objective of his writing. I hope so. In any case, good book, encouraging read, and a sincere brother in Christ with some quality insights to share.

3 out of 5 stars there's a lot of good and some questionable bits.......2007-07-18

The book has its strengths and weaknesses. I will focus on what I believe to be the negatives of the book and then the positives so that the review might end on a positive note.
WEAKNESSES:
1. He focuses too much on meeting in houses and not on the purpose behind it. The goal is not to meet in homes; the goal is to love and care for one another. Simply meeting in homes will not accomplish this, though I believe it can help facilitate it.
2. He comes down too hard on large churches. I have been in mega churches where the people are highly relational, hospitable and where they love one another. I have also been to house churches that were relatively "cold" by comparison. It's the love and relationships that make the church more than the structure.
3. He seems anti-authority. He has nothing good to say about "leaders" and his idea of an elder is a nice old man who makes sure that things run smoothly. I wonder if he has actually studied all that the bible has to say on the function of elders/leaders. Verses such as Hebrews 13:17, " Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account." Were strangely absent from his treatment of the subject.
4. He boldly declares that smaller churches are of superior quality to large churches. Having been an active part of both, let me disagree. In a small church, the leadership tends to carry a wide variety of responsibilities like a General Practitioner. A large church has specialists that can focus in one particular area. For instance, say you have a young Christian man struggling with same sex attraction. Sure a home church may love him; a small church will pray for him. But a large church has the people and expertise to run a group specifically for those struggling with that very issue and counsellors who know how to walk someone through such issues. A large church usually has a better air war going (ie teaching/preaching ministry). The author simply does not acknowledge that a large church can be stronger in ANY way compared to a small or house church. I feel like in this respect he simply knocked down a straw opponent.
5. I don't know what he meant by "the gospel is not a series of doctrines," pg 44. he seems to be saying that the gospel is about how you live rather than what doctrines you say or believe. Perhaps I am misunderstanding him, but the gospel actually is a series of doctrines to be believed.
6. A big weakness of the book is a lack of personal examples. After 300 pages I still don't know if the author himself is a member of such a house church. The book could have been greatly enhanced with examples of how these principles have played out in the lives of him and his family.
7. I felt that his treatment of Church history in regards to house churches v. congregational churches was to one sided. Another example of a straw opponent. He says that congregational churches have been "misused by the cults". Yes, but it is also true that the Jehovah's Witnesses started out meeting in homes.
STRENGTHS:
1. I strongly agree with the fact that we as the Church I the West need to focus much more on our homes than on our Church buildings. As good as the preaching at some churches may be, without an effective ground war to fulfil all the "one another" verses of the New Testament, the church will not accomplish its God given mandate. I believe homes are generally the most effective means to accomplishing this goal. The author may overstate his case a bit, but it is the way forward here in the West.
2. He does a good job at showing practical ways the leadership of a church could transition into a cell or house church model.
3. He gives scripture which supports the idea that homes played a large role in the early church
4. He points out that much of our evangelism is futile unless it is rooted in church planting/multiplication and that homes are key to accomplishing this.
5. He has some great warning against what he sees as a "copyism" of the biggest churches and most well known ministers.
6. The book really is revolutionary in nature. If this is the direction the church is going in, then it will change a lot and probably for the good!

I recommend the book. Just don't go out burning church buildings when you're done.

5 out of 5 stars I knew I wasn't crazy!.......2007-07-11

This is an outstanding book. For a long time, I would sit in a church service and look around thinking, "Why do we do things like this? Where is our biblical model? Why don't we do things like they did in the bible?"
Then after all this time, I find this book. And reading it was practically indescribable. All these things that I had known deep within me, materialized in black and white. I have read, and re-read it, making notes and studying, and shared it with others.

Besides my concordance and bible dictionary, this is the most important extrabiblical book I own.

It will challenge you to truly "think outside the (church) box."

2 out of 5 stars New Form vs. Renewed Substance.......2007-05-04

I read this book while touring some magnificent, but spiritually dead churches in England and Italy. While I can therefore certainly agree with Simson that the church needs the intimacy and flexibility that his model presents, I am not sure it provides an answer and definitely not "the answer".

1) His book assumes that if we "correct" the form of the church, the substance will take care of itself. History and the Scriptures show us that God is not limited by form and acts in informal (burning bush) and formal (Tabernacle) contexts. Changing the form of the church is always much easier than getting down to the hard business of asking ourselves "Why am I not opening up to those I fellowship with?" or "What am I holding onto that I should be giving away?"

2) This is great theory, but I did not see any place he could point to where he could say, "We are doing this in such and such a location and here is how it is working out." The Communist Manifesto looks great on paper, but I doubt any of us wants live under such a system.

3) I cannot help but detect an anti-intellectual and separationistic tendency in Simson when he writes, "The problems often begin with a nation's whole educational system. It is usually geared towards preparing a person for a place in the economic work structure of the world, from which, in more ways than one, God wants to save us. One pastor recently put it like this: the most crucial years of youth are spent -- or shall we say sacrificed? -- on the alter of education, with the parents pouring the fuel on the fire. As a result, many people only think back to the many 'lost years' earning degrees they never needed anyway." (p. 269)

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not accurate.......2007-05-02

Simpson has done a good job of compelling the reader to see the power of a house church, but used other church models (small groups and cell group models in particular) as a straw man to make his case.

Like so many prophetic voices, Simpson wrote with a sharp, critical tone when speaking about the larger body of Christ. In this regard, the book is lacking and could use a good edit to remove inflammatory statements that make him look like he's beating up the church instead of treating it gently.

When this book first came out, it was the first book on the "new and improved" housechurch movement. Much has been written since and I personally believe a better, more balanced book to read on house churches is Larry Kreider's book, entitled, "Starting A House Church" which was just released in first quarter of 2007.

Book Description

Whether because of changing lifestyles or simply because houses are becoming outdated, millions of North Americans are renovating their homes every year, spending more money annually on renovation than on new-home construction. But renovations can be fraught with unintended consequences like indoor air pollution. How do you remodel in a healthy, environmentally friendly way?

Green Remodeling is a comprehensive guide. It first points out the advantages of remodeling. Buildings are responsible for 40% of worldwide energy flow and material use; so how you remodel can make a difference. Upgrading furnaces, cabinets and toilets means less fossil fuel pollution, reduced resource depletion and fewer health risks. Green remodeling is more energy-efficient, more resource-conserving, healthier for occupants and creates buildings that are more affordable to build, operate and maintain.

The book then discusses simple green renovation solutions for homeowners, focusing on key aspects of the building, including foundations, framing, plumbing, windows, heating and finishes. Room by room, it outlines the intricate connections that make the house work as a system. For example, how new windows may affect the structure and mechanical systems of the rooms below, the health of the family and the future of old-growth forests. Then, in an easy-to-read format complete with checklists, personal stories, expert insights and an extensive resource list, it covers easy ways to save energy, conserve natural resources and protect the health of loved ones. Addressing all climates, this is a perfect resource for conventional homeowners, as well as for architects and remodeling contractors.

David Johnston was named one of the top 50 remodelers in the U.S. in 1990. He developed the first green remodeling program in the U.S. and is creating a national green certification program for the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Kim Master is a green building consultant. Both are from Boulder, Colorado.

3 out of 5 stars Green Builders.......2007-09-14

As a recent Interior Design graduate I was looking for books to remodel the interiors of homes in a "green", sustainable way. I ordered this book but upon inspection found it to be more suited for an owner/builder. I ordered "Good Green Homes", by Jennifer Roberts as well and found it to be similar in that it would appeal more to owner/builders/architects.

4 out of 5 stars For the "Green" remodler.......2007-08-18

A good reference book for any contractor new to green building.

Explains the basics of indoor air pollution and how to choose different building materials that are both "green" and healthy. Broken down into different sections, i.e., the kitchen and bathroom for example makes it an easy to follow guide. The check-lists at the end of each chapter offer an easy way to make sure you've considered everything with the project.

3 out of 5 stars decent but commercial and expensive.......2007-06-01

this book was well written and fairly clear, even to me as a building novice. i was fairly disappointed, though, at how many of the green approaches seemed to focus on expensive, high-tech commercial green materials. i was hoping for a lot more on how to integrate traditional and very basic do-it-yourself techniques such as recycling used materials, mud plastering, simple greywater systems, and so on into existing buildings. in the end, i could hardly use any of the information in this book because i couldn't afford the materials. if you have the money, though, and are hoping for a very polished and professional look, you will probably enjoy this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good book but could be condensed .......2007-03-09

I read the book from start to finish but found myself skipping over many passages of repeated information. Although the information provided was useful, the same exact info. is rehashed many times in the same chapter and throughout the book. The book format may have something to do with that with it's many recaps and review.

Good basic introduction to the green industry with much information.

4 out of 5 stars Great way to think about green remodelling.......2007-01-21

This book really shaped how I went about renovating my house. Although I wasn't able to incorporate as much as I had hope, due to budget constraints, this book opened my eyes to considerations I didn't know existed. It's easy to look at solar or wind power, bamboo flooring and recycled tiles to go green; this book goes through a house piecemeal to explain concerns on every level for a much more thorough discussion of renovating green. Extremely helpful.

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

I recommend that you will like reading this book as much as I did.

The year is 1906, the place is San Francisco. Annie and her brother, Jack, have just traveled here in their magic tree house, on a mission from Morgan le Fay, the mysterious magical librarian from King Arthur's time. In an effort to save Camelot, the children have already found three special kinds of writing for Morgan's library: something to follow (Civil War on Sunday), something to send (Revolutionary War on Wednesday), and something to learn (Twister on Tuesday). Now it's time to find "something to lend." It's a quiet, peaceful morning in San Francisco, and Annie is eager to start exploring. So eager, in fact, that she pulls Jack away from his research just before he would have learned a very important piece of information... All too soon, the siblings figure it out for themselves: they have arrived in this lovely city a moment before one of the biggest earthquakes the U.S. has ever known shakes the Bay Area to pieces! Stunned, Jack and Annie wander the streets, but quickly find a purpose. Lots of people need help transporting goods to safety, and many more are left without any idea where to go or what to do. But what about their mission? Will the kids find something to lend before the entire city goes up in flames?

Mary Pope Osborne's tremendously popular Magic Tree House series offers young readers a chance to immerse themselves in spellbinding adventures even as they learn about history. The terrible San Francisco earthquake is described with great historical accuracy, but with admirable age-appropriateness. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Jack and Annie travel back to the morning of the great San Francisco earthquake. While they are there, they meet a reporter and help get some kids to safety.

4 out of 5 stars Earthquake in the Early Morning.......2007-04-27

This book is fabulous.
One of the reasons I like it is because it talked about fires, earthquake and natural disaster. Another reason is because it was near our city! The last reason I liked it is because they lost their city but still had hope. I learned some exellent facts. I learned the fire burned 28,000 buildings! They had half a millon people there. The earthquake was called "The Great Shake". It was one of the biggest earthquakes ever! I would recommend this book for three reasons. The characters are fun. Jack likes the realistic and Annie likes the magic. The second reason is the excitement and learning wonderful facts.
Earthquake in the Early Morning is a excellent book.

Continuing the sweeping narrative that he began with The House of Rothschild: Money's Prophets, 1798-1848, Oxford University historian Niall Ferguson conjures up a world in which widespread change and utter uncertainty held sway in the place of carefully ordered dynasties and universally observed mores. In the aftermath of the Napoleonic revolution, European Jews had been able to move within dominant societies somewhat more freely. Of no family was this more true than the Rothschilds, whose branches lived in Germany, France, Austria, and England, and whose vast financial empire enabled them to act as diplomats and power brokers throughout the world. Their influence was enormous. When Spain wanted to build a railroad, its ministers approached the House of Rothschild. When the Confederate States of America sought to be recognized by the states of Europe, it sought--unsuccessfully--the Rothschilds' support. When Ferdinand de Lesseps broke ground for the Panama Canal and Cecil Rhodes broke ground for his vast diamond and gold mines in South Africa, Rothschild funds backed them.

Until the 1920s, Ferguson demonstrates, there was almost no economic, technological, or political development in Europe in which the House of Rothschild did not play some role. The rise of nationalist and national socialist movements and of official anti-Semitism, coupled with the rise in the Jazz Age of a new generation of Rothschilds that cared more for the good life than for the hard work of maintaining their holdings, led to a substantial decline in the family's authority and wealth. But even today, as Ferguson writes in this richly detailed but eminently readable history, the Rothschilds figure in European finance, continuing a legacy that Ferguson's two volumes trace from the Middle Ages to the new millennium. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

Niall Ferguson's House of Rothschild: Money's Prophets 1798-1848 was hailed as "definitive" by the New York Times, a "great biography" by Time magazine, and was named one of the Ten Best Books of 1998 by Business Week. Now, Ferguson concludes his myth--breaking portrait of one of the most powerful families of modern times at the zenith of its power. From Crimea to World War II, wars repeatedly threatened the stability of the Rothschild's worldwide empire. Despite these upheavals, theirs remained the biggest bank in the world up until the First World War. Yet the Rothschild's failure to establish themselves successfully in the United States proved fateful, and as financial power shifted from London to New York after 1914, their power waned. At once a classic family saga and major work of economic, social and political history, The House of Rothschild is the riveting story of an unparalleled dynasty.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars THE INVISIBLE ROTHSCHILDS.......2007-07-03

What has Ferguson not told about the Rothschilds in this second volume of his seemingly exhaustive two volume set?

He all too facilely dismisses Victor Rothschild's being the fifth man in the World War II Soviet spy ring of Blunt, Burgess, et. al. He dosen't discuss the Rothschilds' connection with Freemasonry at the highest level, and their gift to Israel of the Supreme Court building, a New World Order artifact, heavily laden architecturally with Freemasonry symbolism. Likewise, glaringly absent from note are Illuminati activities, which the family has been widely thought to be involved with. History Professor Ferguson could fill in his blanks on some vital but shady Rothschild history from Henry Makow, a researcher and writer--and a Jew.

According to an article on Ferguson in Harvard Magazine (May/June '07), he is about to take on biographical writing of Henry Kissinger, at Kissinger's request. This should generate caution. Could Kissinger's "papers" be entirely relied on? Kissinger probably saw what sheen Ferguson could put on the Rothschild's archives as raw material, ignoring or minimising important but dark concerns.

Same question on the Warburg's family papers that he is availing himself of. What will Ferguson tell us about Paul Warburg's role in establishing the egregious Federal Reserve, and Max Warburg financing the Bolshevik revolution?

Let's hope that Ferguson can either put this and other allegations to rest once and for all or illuminate them if true--but now that he's shown his colors with the Rothschilds, I doubt that he will, either way.

It seems that sympathetic academic interest in these elitist families and individuals is inevitable in part because that is where the big bucks for research and publishing would be, especially for a scholar who professes to have, as he says in the Harvard Magazine article, "become a thorough philo-Semite".

Is there a whiff of opportunism here at the expense of objectivity?

3 out of 5 stars Rothschild the world's banker.......2006-08-23

A very complete book, a mine of facts but the author was unable to sort what is important from miscellaneous. The mix of general european history, business history and family events is by moments as indigestible as porridge por a non-scot.

2 out of 5 stars Way too detailed.......2006-07-17

This book was just way too detailed for me. It contains lots of facts and figures about biz transactions but it is just too much. It was to the point of who cares? Niall Ferguson really did his home work as far as that is concerned but it made the book boring. To me it felt like it was written by an accountant. It is the story behind the facts and figures and how they came about which make for interesting reading. But I have to give him credit for the time he spent putting this book together is unimaginable.

Having said that I would have enjoyed it more if it had some stories where they made 1.2 million on this deal or lost 500,000 on that deal but it wasn't there. Just an accounting at the end of the year saying this was what they had at the end. No exciting stories like the robber barons trying to take over a railroad or JP Morgan putting together large trust deals in the US. Although chapter 11, which tells of the Rothschild involvement with mining and Cecil Rohdes and De Beers was very interesting and by far the the best chapter in the book, although it was not enough for me to give it a better rating. But that chapter for me made the book.

I skimmed more of this book then I did the first one. There are a few more interesting stories in here but not enough to really keep you interested. If you like well written interesting biographies this is probably not for you.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed:.......2004-03-15

I agree with one of the critics that the book had many facts and details that broke up the pace of the book for me. Ferguson presumes that the reader knows a fair amount about bonds, consuls and other financial mechanisms. He would have done well to slow down a bit and explain a few of the terms and concepts. And I think that Ferguson tells an utterly superficial and innocuous history of the Family. Long awkward sentences make for labored reading. That having been said, this was no doubt a delicate and ambitious undertaking.

4 out of 5 stars The House of Rothschild.......2003-07-24

Ferguson insults the purchaser of the Penguin Paperback by omitting the bibliography and only providing sketchy footnotes. "Serious scholars" who desire these items are advised to buy the Harcover edition. Other than that, it is a good read

This is a great book for children. The story is wonderful. I will definitely use it is my Kindergarten classroom.

5 out of 5 stars Sunflower House review.......2005-10-22

I loved the beautiful illustrations that are sure to be bright enough to catch even a young child's eye. I liked the simplicity and rythm of the text. I especially liked the child's viewpoint narrative and the cycle of life science that is woven into the story and the pictures. Above all I liked that the story celebrates one of life's simplest but grander pleasures.

5 out of 5 stars Sunflower House.......2005-01-06

Beautiful pictures. I read this book to my 3 & 4 year old sons.
They thought it was really neat so we planted a sunflower house that spring. Even my 9 yr old son wanted in on the project. It was a great way to introduce not only the wonders of the plant growth process but also the responsibilty of caring for things that grow.

5 out of 5 stars A Sweet Book.......2002-03-08

I absolutely love this concept book. My preschool children love it too. I have 4 & 5 year olds and this book is a great jumping off point to all sorts of Springtime themes! I have read many of Eve Bunting's books and all are wonderful; I highly recommend them all.

5 out of 5 stars Colorful, playful, nostalgic, bright and fun........1999-06-08

Looking for the perfect book for kids to understand the concept of 'how a seed grows'...? This one is great, and shows the development of the seeds, from beginning to end while bright illustrations show what fun the garden brings home to the little boy who grew his own 'sunflower house' and shared it with others. How one seed can grow into a plant that supplies even more seeds to sow, and bring pleasure not only for one season, but many seasons thereafter that others may enjoy as well.
