5 out of 5 stars A most.......2007-08-31

I rebuilt my bathroom and completely renovated the shower. This book was my bible. Of course I had other references and ideas to use, but pretty much kept to this book. I had it there by my side while constructing everything from the shower pan, shower walls and tiling it all. Sure I could have done it without this book and my wife would have made me hire a professional to redo my job.

Not to brag, but with the advice from this book people think that a professional DID remodel my bathroom. There is so much satisfaction in doing it yourself and to get a the results as good (and sometimes better) as a pro...

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview.......2007-06-22

John Bridge has put together an excellent reference for the experienced and novice tile setter alike, and if you're looking to learn the basics to put together a project for the first time, this book is a must read. John's light, conversational style makes the book a quick read, and as mentioned in another review, the online forum on the author's website is also an invaluable reference.

Highly recommended to those who need a to learn the ABCs of tile.

5 out of 5 stars Tile Your World.......2007-05-13

I bought the bookas a gift for a friend who is quite interested in home renovation technique. She was thrilled by it and judging by her reaction, it must be an informative and well written book.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know!.......2007-02-13

This is the ultimate book for tile setters and for those who want to be tile setters. John focuse on all of the little things that the amateurs don't. focus on. The actual tiling itself is the last thing he focuse on. He will teach you the science of laying different types of tiles. You will learn everyting from floor deflection to room layout to determing the square footage and much more. I even learned of a new underlayment product made by Schluter that does not transfer cracks to the tiles due to structural movement and also a waterproofing membrane to use in shower tile installations! I have learned so much Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for me - Novice/JOAT.......2007-02-06

We recently built our new home & I used this book & Setting Tile (Fine Homebuilding) to do all the tile work. One of our best & proudest features is the masterbath I built with lg garden tub and oversized corner dual head shower with dual niche all tiled together - We love it. I can't believe I was able to do it all with friends & family and alot of sweat/work.

Saved thousands over best few estimates. I see why the labor is so pricy now....

Recommend both books.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not terribly helpful.......2007-07-03

I was very excited to get this book as we plan to incorporate some craftsman style elements into the 1970s bungalo we're buying. The interiors in the photos were not terribly attractive and leaned towards kitschy. Unless you want to turn you house into a museum to 20th century cheasiness, don't buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Good book!!.......2007-03-12

This is a good book if you are looking at remodeling a craftman type home or if you are planning to build one. I did like some of the idea's and the pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Great Idea Book.......2007-01-15

If you are planning any kind work where you are going using allot of wood this is a great book, it is full of ideas. The photos have great detail. One of best books I have on Craftsman/Arts& Crafts interiors.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures, workable ideas.......2006-05-20

So you've bought a bungalow--now, what do you do with it? Maybe it's a fixer-upper; maybe it's too small, or doesn't have enough storage space; maybe you're just not sure what kind of furniture to get. This book is a great start toward deciding where to go next. Illustrated with hundreds of full-color photographs, it shows not only many of the features by which you can tell an Arts & Crafts house when you see it (I was surprised to learn that the big old foursquares such as my grandparents lived in for 40 years are included in this classification), but gives actual ideas carried out by other homeowners, even unto before-and-after floor plans. The author's advice is thoughtful and well suited to the houses she writes about, too. And if you just like to look at pictures of vintage American homes, this would be a good volume to add to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Houses, er, too large.......2005-07-06

There's a lot of good in this book, and it's given me a few ideas for my own arts-and-crafts vernacular house, but at the same time it's frustrating. Lots of the pictures feel (or explicitly state) that they're from houses much larger than the classic 900-2000 square foot bungalow.

Given that Taunton is also the publisher of The Not So Big House and a few books on cottages, it's a little strange to see bungalows recast so large, either built bigger or with additions tastefully tucked out of view from the street.

While I like most of the details they show, their approach (perhaps necessary to include the new bungalows being built today) means that a lot of the coziness small bungalows naturally offered is missing, replaced by modern open plans and a lot of period trim and woodwork that can't quite make up the difference.

5 out of 5 stars Every page is a treasure!!.......2007-08-18

I read this book from first page to last right after I opened it from the mail. It is filled with inspiration, helpful hints, decorating ideas, and an archive of full colored images that you can scan into your computer and use yourself. I love how she does not force her shop onto the reader, she states that you can find the items that she is explaining at flea markets and antique sales all over the world. I would rate this book 5 stars, for helpful insight into creating a "french inspired home." Cant wait for the next one!!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-08-08

I must say I was disappointed in the book. I thought that it would have been more ideas of what furniture and fabrics to use to create a French inspired looking home.
I am in the processing of trying to create a French looking kitchen and I had hoped that would be inspiring.
But unfortunately for me it wasn't.

4 out of 5 stars Defining What Is French Decorating or a French Home.......2007-06-12

I would have given this book 3-stars, if I hadn't read the 5-star view of C Albers. I realize that perhaps I didn't read the fine print regarding the book's description. Based on the title "French-Inspired Home" with French General -- who I don't know, I expected a book with a greater focus on rooms (a suggestion also made by Albers). In fact it is essentially a vintage crafts book with a French flavor.

I've visited Paris and the south of France well over 250 times on business and pleasure, and this particular style of French decorating is not prevalent. In fact, the most inspiring to me aspect of French decorating is the mix of old and new, ornate and clean modern. I spent two nights at the Louvre in Jan. 07 and marveled that only the French would be flashing modern blue lights on a heap (truly) of ancient Greek and Roman columns, with modern dancers and acid jazz playing to create a "new" mood for ancient art. THIS is French imagination at its best.

The photos in this book, while lovely, are stylized in a very old-fashioned attitude . . . great-grandmother's attic. Most of us don't live this way and what we appreciate are touches of these special memories, not an entire house full of them. Who has time to dust. Just kidding. Some of the bath projects look like easy pampering to make for yourself or special gifts to create.

In summary, if you know French General, then I would follow the Alber's review and 5-star recommendation. If you are expecting a sophisticated book of French home and country decorating, this is not it. Like me, you will be disappointed. A more descriptive and informative title would have saved me the money.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2007-05-29

Charming book brimming with inspiration - well done! The photography is wonderful! Geared to encourage shoppers to visit Meng's store (brick & morter and on-line), you'll want to incorporate all of her ideas. Lots of how-to's. Meng's creativity and ideas are not just crafty - she looks to Europe for clues to create a relaxed French life. C'est tres bonne.

2 out of 5 stars The French-Inspired Home.......2007-05-09

If you are looking for pictures of French decorated homes this is not the book you want. This was more like a craft book on how to make things for the French home. If thats what you are looking for it is a good book, I wasn't. If you want pictures and ideas buy Charles Faudree's Country French Living.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing Discoveries.......2007-09-10

This book seems to have it all. There seems to be an endless supply of information and how to apply it (Which it strongly implies in the first few pages). There is even a section at the end that shows you how to make a vacuum-forming machine in good detail and for the least amount of cost and bulk. If you are even remotely interested in making props or want to duplicate items in your own pad, buy this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Save money,build yerself.......2007-08-14

Real good. His teaching skills shine thru on every page.Very thorough coverage of everything from simple paper mache to building a vaccuum form machine and creating artificial biulding parts, breakaway glass, recycling old props and reusing polymerss time and time again.Excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Much Ado about Molding and Casting...........2007-05-21

I wanted to review this book as I was recommended to buy it from outside of the Amazon.com usual circles. Understand I am a model builder (sorry according to some of my peer group an "assembler") and have always been interested in building my own custom "props" for sentimental and self-gratifying purposes only.....
I recommend this handbook on the foundation of it's knowledge. The handbook packs years of property making experience onto easy to read and photo specific pages and say's "NOW CREATE"....

I felt some things were lacking:

#1 New plastics that should be included or addendumed (New such as Wonderflex, Fun Foam, PVC etc. - For strengthening, vacum-forming, etc.)

#2 The "How to make a Vacum-Form Machine" is not as complete as it should be...- The article believes the reader to understand how to plan and design electrical circuitry...I wonder how many kids out there finished their oven....Hooked it up to an electrical wire with a plug in the end and get a surprise! Is electrical insulation or shrink tubing needed? (Are transformers or circuit breakers needed?) What is used for the electrical system (a car battery?) or wall plug? Why such a big space under the oven? (Then a simple 12 volt car battery, on/off switch and some wire may be all you need to make the oven....I really don't know but I will ask some experts.)

#3 Sections showing use of different materials tended to be very short and unclear....I really would love to have seen more examples in the use of "Fiber Glass" and "Paper-Maiche"....

All in all, the handbook is very helpful to me at my stage of beginning a new hobbie or building upon an old skill...after all I did make a wooden Star Trek Communicator and Phaser from scratch when I was 14 !

    5 out of 5 stars What a fantastic book.......2007-02-16

I've read many different books on the subject of molding and casting, and by far this is the most complete. Almost every practical approach is covered including plaster, paper mache, fiber glass and even vacuum molding with thermo plastic. Each step is clearly detailed and explained along with the appropriate warnings and cautions for hazardous material.

Not only does the author describe how to do each step, he takes the time to explain why you would use one technique over another. It is very obvious he has years of experience in the field.

If I had to criticize the book at all, it would be the strange two column layout. Instead of always reading down the column, it jumps across columns when there is a picture in the text.

You can buy this book with confidence and know that you will find the information you need inside.

4 out of 5 stars A good book with an awkward layout.......2007-01-10

This book is pretty decent. It falls short in just one area:

The text layout is awkward. Multiple sections on many pages are oddly split using the bi-columnar format. I frequently found myself inadvertently jumping from one section to the next.

The sources for materials and supplies found in this book makes it worth the price in my opinion.

    Book Description

What defines an Arts & Crafts bungalow? What makes it different from other small, one or one-and-a-half story houses? Many say that it's hard to describe, but you know one when you see it. And knowing one when you see it is all about knowing how to spot the details. With Arts & Crafts homes, it is often the way the details are combined, and the philosophy they represent, that makes a house an authentic Arts and Crafts bungalow. It is not just knee braces in the gable, nor a river rock column, or a three part front window. In their latest book, bungalow experts Jane Powell and Linda Svendsen identify the finer points and visual characteristics that make a bungalow a bungalow, and show how to incorporate these important details into your bungalow. The authors skillfully explain how to identify the details and the ways of blending them, and offer insight into the Arts & Crafts philosophy behind their use. A sleeping porch, a pergola, an exposed rafter tail, an extensive use of wood, stone, and brick: none of these things by themselves characterize a bungalow. With Bungalow Details, however, anyone can become a bungalow expert, and be able to confidently "know a bungalow when they see one." Jane Powell is the proprietor of House Dressing, a business dedicated to renovating and preserving old homes. She is a frequent lecturer and consultant, and is the author of Bungalow Kitchens and Bungalow Bathrooms. Linda Svendsen, a graduate of Music and Art High School and Parsons School of Design in New York, has been a renowned photographer for more than thirty years. Her work is showcased in numerous magazines and books; she is the author of Bicycle: Around the World.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book.. a bit too politically correct.......2006-11-05

I enjoy this book and look at pretty regularly. I plan on using some of the details on future construction projects. However, the author is a bit too politically correct for my tastes. She keeps reminding us how "poison" vinyl is. That sort of bothered me. I am sure, given a choice, most people would choose to live a beautiful wooden or stone home rather than a vinyl clad manufactured home or tract home.. however lets be realistic. Those types of home are often what is affordable to the average family. Other than that issue.. I would recommend the book.. it has some great pictures and lots of information about bungalow exterior details.

5 out of 5 stars best of the bunglaow books.......2006-03-24

Together writer Jane Powell and photographer Linda Svendsen create the best bungalow books on the market -- full of information, not just fluff. Whether you are thinking of remodelling your house, changing a few details, or just want to understand the history of your bungalow, this is the book to buy... and really, this book is very cheap compared to the price of a bad remodel.

In my opinion the chapter on avoiding replacement window scams, while energy-retrofitting your house, should be required reading for all homebuyers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference guide to Craftsman bungalows........2005-11-25

I don't live in a Craftsman bungalow, but I'm adding a number of Craftsman details to my existing NW cabin style house. Over the years I have collected numerous books full of photographs of various bungalows but I have sold all of them now that I have this book. This one book contains information on nearly every exterior detail you are likely to need, and is lavishly illustrated with photographs and drawings. It's an excellent reference for buffs and restorers. I have already pre-ordered the next volume which will cover interiors. Shame I have to wait 6 months!

5 out of 5 stars Bungalow exteriors gives great needed detail.......2005-08-14

This book became and instant reference for our home project and I have quite a few in my collection. If you are looking for good examples to put the finishing touches on a bungalow or arts and crafts project, Ilike this one!

5 out of 5 stars Fantasic, complete, not just a pretty facade!.......2005-03-05

Having devoured Powell's book entitled "Bungalow Kitchens", I knew this book would be every bit as detailed and I was not disappointed. In case you doubt that an entire book can be filled with nothing but information on the exteriors of bungalow houses, I can assure you that page after page is replete with excellent color photographs, illustrations (both modern and period), detailed descriptions of various materials and techniques, and information to help you do a bungalow exterior the RIGHT way (don't paint those bricks!!).

My one and only complaint was the extremely short length of the chapter on foundations, but it's more than made up for by the incredibly detailed chapters on sidings, roofing materials, doors, windows, porches, fences, and much more. Each chapter has an exhaustive listing of suppliers for every kind of material.

We don't have a bungalow, but we will be building a reproduction bungalow house in the next few years and will rely heavily on this and all of Powell's other fine books for both information and inspiration.

    Book Description

Trompe l'oeil murals can turn even the most drab room into a beautiful work of art as enchanting as it is convincing and realistic. Now readers can learn how to capture that magic with The Art of Trompe l'oeil Murals.

Master muralist Yves Lanthier has decorated the homes of celebrities with his breathtakingly true-to-life paintings, but readers don't have to be rich or famous to benefit from his expertise. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-07-03

I loved this book and although I would have liked more instruction on painting some of his illusions, I am quite happy with what the author did include. Great photos of his completed works.

    5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring.......2006-06-19

I found this to be a wonderful book and will give it often as gifts.

    3 out of 5 stars Just Okay.......2006-05-04

I mistakenly thought this was a Graham Rust book. I don't buy this type of book thinking I will be a grand muralist. I buy them for high-end decoupage images. I rip the book apart and use the images. This book did not meet my needs. I found the images bland. Again, I do not buy these books for the intended purpose so keep this in mind

    2 out of 5 stars Designer.......2006-04-14

This is a very nice coffee table book, and for a beginning art novice there are some "secrets". But, for artist with general high school level education this is little more than a nice picture book.
There is no discounting Yves Lanthier's skill or excellent creative ability but the few tips he gives are not for creating the Trompe L'oeil ceilings he exhibits in the book. Rather he shows simple stone / marble technique, a basic wall effect and basic light shading in the last fifteen pages of the book.
This is not a book the speaks to basic line and eye illusion of ceiling depth which I was looking for.

2 out of 5 stars "to fool the eye or to fool yourself?.......2006-02-20

"To trick the eye" if that is your intention be objective ... this people do not" fool the eye"... they fool themselves, and you.

A comprehensive guide to creating a toxin-free, environmentally friendly homewith an eye toward bringing health and harmony to those living there and those living on the earth as a whole Recent studies show that nearly one-third of American adults, or 63 million consumers, care deeply about health and environmental issues and the realization of human potential through a unity of mind, body, and spirit. Appealing directly to the Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS) market, this informative and practical guide helps readers tend to their living spaces in ecologically sound ways that protect the health and safety of their families and the world around them. From selecting weekly produce to purchasing a water- filtration system, from using a steam cleaner or non-toxic pest controls to adjusting the energy in a home with crystals and aromatherapy, Home Enlightenment examines the environmental impact of the choices a consumer makes and helps readers establish day-to-day practices and a lifestyle that bring healing and natural spirituality into their homes. The author, host of Annies Healthy Living Network online, is one of the most trusted names in the health and environmental awareness field. Twice poisoned by chemicals as a young adult, Annie has become one of the champions of toxin-free living. Here she shares her story of recovery, renewal, and transformation as a guide for living in a healthier home environment.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of easy info.......2007-08-24

I do not have a lot of time to read with four kids and this book was a easy fast book to get through. Lots of information that was displayed easily. Not the big words either. And in the back it a huge wonderful list of resources I could look up on the internet. Wealth of information. I gave this book to our school hoping when they remodel they consider what was written.

5 out of 5 stars Create a heathly, safe home for yourself and your family.......2007-05-13

This book helps you take better care of yourself and your love ones. We are concerned about what we eat and if it's safe. We also need to be concerned about what we use to clean our homes with and what we use on our skin. In this book there is lots of good, practical receipes for a toxin-free home. This book will be on that I will use often.

    5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Path Toward Ecologically-Healthy Living.......2007-03-30

Have you ever wondered about the long-term effect of cleaning products in your home? What about pesticides, chemicals and all the other potentially toxic goods that invade our lives?

Twice poisoned by such things, author Annie Bond, host of "Annie's Healthy Living Network" online, offers realistic remedies for a natural and nontoxic lifestyle that include everything from eating and cleaning to gardening and dressing. A comprehensive path toward ecologically-healthy living.

    5 out of 5 stars Enlightenment Indeed!.......2007-03-22

Annie Bond has hit the mark with this one. It's a definite read for anyone looking to make an impact on their health and how their actions effect Mother Earth. I learned so much from this book about how our work/home environment, from carpet to paints, can be detrimental to our health and the environment we live in.

5 out of 5 stars Very pleasant book.......2007-03-11

I'm not even halfway through this book yet and I'm impressed. Loaded with useful information to make your own personal space less toxic. Offers recipes for non toxic cleaning solutions as well as healthy alternatives for just about every system in your home you can think of. Annie Bond does indeed write as if she were sitting right in your living room talking to you. I will be getting copies of this book for gifts to newly married couples and homewarming gifts, as well as baby shower gift, because what better way to welcome your new baby into your home than to give s/he a non toxic place to live and grow! Highly recommend this book. Thank you Annie Bond for taking the time and love to write it!

    5 out of 5 stars Friendly Resource.......2001-05-10

This is a user friendly book to have close at hand. If you're like me I am always looking at ways to incorporate colors, designs and arts and crafts style into our 1922 Chalet Arts and Craft's home. I especially appreciate all the colorful pictures and the textiles shown. Paint, stenciling and wallcoverings being modest in cost and are realistic changes that are indeed affordable. Lots of ideas and examples to pull a room together. I refer to the book frequently and I am pleased I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Bungalow owners idea book.......2001-01-23

For newly into the arts and crafts movement and restoring our bungalow, this book concentrates exactly where we needed it to -- the interior. From shots of wonderful restored homes to our favorite section (before and after), this book will become our favorite resource. Excellently focused!

    5 out of 5 stars What an inspiration....great book...buy this book!.......1999-08-11

As soon to be purchasers of an 'arts & crafts' home in the Hudson Valley (NY), my husband and I never heard of 'arts & crafts' style homes. This book has been such a wonderful inspiration for us. The book is filled with color photos, wonderful ideas, themes and history! We will borrow from what we've learned and put those concepts, colors etc to great use in our new home. What was especially dramatic was the before and after pix of rooms/homes. You won't be disappointed in this purchase.
