5 out of 5 stars A-Z Review.......2006-05-27

I found this story to be entertaining and enjoyable. I found myself anxious to find out what Ruth Rose, Dink, and Josh would find on their hike. Would they get to see a Zombie or a alligator? Would the village people leave after their cemetary graves were being robbed? I felt like I was with the children when they got up at midnight and followed the glow of a flash light. They were very brave when they watched someone or something come up out of the grave. I'm sure that any adventurous person would enjoy this mystery.

5 out of 5 stars For criminal's sake...by PH.......2005-05-01

I would give this book ten stars because of how the author describes the people. What happens is the pack of kids named Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose visit a cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana, called Old Forest Trail. They stayed in a hotel with Ruth Rose's Grandmother. Meanwhile, they see their friend, Jack. So, they go on a camping trip mainly to see alligator nests. Then, two graves in the cemetery get robbed! Jack goes to kneel on red clay. Then at night, the shining light of someone's flashlight awakens Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose. They go and explore. They see someone who is tall, bright haired, and is scraping red dirt off his pants. Dink suspects it could be Jack.

In the morning they see a trail of bare footprints; they follow this trail to meet a man named Byron. Byron was tall, bright haired, but most importantly, he has a shovel with red dirt! They immediately report to Ruth Rose's grandmother about the incident. So they go talk to Byron, he admitted he was taking his owl named Bill hunting. He found the thief's wallet. He pulled out the ID and showed it to them. Guess who the thief was! They called the NOPD and showed them the evidence.

Anyone who reads this book and others in the series should get an A in Reading for enjoying some of the most mysterious books in history.

5 out of 5 stars A Pre-Katrina Look at New Orleans' Cities of the Dead.......2005-09-18

This book was sent to me to review before Katrina was a puff of air. As New Orleans became inundated with water from broken levees, I tried to remember when I first learned that New Orleans was below sea level. It hit me . . . when I was driving by a cemetery and saw the vaults standing tall above ground.

Sure enough, as I opened this book, it quickly pointed out that burying people is challenging because of the ground water due to being below sea level. The text is an amazing presage of what just happened in New Orleans as it relates to what happened to cemeteries in the past when floods hit.

Prior to the disaster, New Orleans was famous in part for its unusual rituals and practices involving the deceased. Cemeteries of New Orleans gives you a visual expression of those rituals and practices (from visiting your loved ones on All Saint's Day to a jazz funeral procession) while showing you the different structures and layouts of the city's major cemeteries. They do resemble cities more than any other cemetery you've ever visited, I'll wager.

If you decide that you want to visit New Orleans after the reconstruction, this book will be a valuable guide to the cemeteries. You'll have pre-Katrina photographs to compare to the post-Katrina reality. You will also know where to visit to see the resting places of the famous, such as Confederate president Jefferson Davis.

This is a photography-intensive look, rather than a text-intensive look. As a result, I think most people will find this resource to be just about perfect in helping them understand how New Orleans likes to handle its dead. I know that seems like a gruesome subject right now, but that's the book's focus.

May all those who need help in New Orleans find it!

4 out of 5 stars First-rate coffe table book for graveyard junkies.......2005-06-20

Visitors to the Crescent City are always intrigued by the cemeteries with their aboveground tombs, like miniature marble cities with narrow lanes and alleyways, and necessitated by marshy ground and a high water table. Traditions included burial of a wife with her birth family, not her husband, and entombment of slaves with the family, and numerous ethnic and fraternal societies have sponsored tombs, especially in the three St. Louis cemeteries. There's a great deal of local history here, but this is primarily a picture book of high quality that includes twenty-eight cemeteries in Orleans Parish, the River Parishes, and neighboring communities like Chalmette and Lacombe. Featured tombs include those of Jefferson Davis, Benjamin Latrobe, Marie Laveau, John Kennedy Toole, Louis Prima, and many ordinary citizens and families. The photography is first-rate and the discussions of architectural styles, religious observances, and the jazz funeral will keep you engaged.

The ethereal infrared photography meshed with the insightful narrative is fascinating, not only for the art but for the history of New Orleans. As a genealogist, I am no stranger to learning from the dead. This book, however, teaches about a culture far removed from my North Carolina Scottish roots.

5 out of 5 stars an overlooked photographer, was ahead of his time.......2004-02-17

This book probably does more than any other to get inside the strange mind of Clarence John Laughlin. This is Southern Gothic at it's height. Best known as a documentor of crumbling plantation homes, Laughlin himself believed he was documenting something else indeed; he felt the camera can record the psychic impressions and nuances of the spirit world, which permeated the sites he photographed. It's weird stuff, and always overlooked in photo history texts.

If you've ever seen the movie "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" with Bette Davis, you'll realize that it was heavily influenced by Laughlin's still images. The fan of gothic culture will find much to brood upon in Laughlin's work. The fact that the bulk of it was done in the years 1935-1950 amaze people when I show them this book. So, photographers, southern historians, paranormal afficianadoes, and Goths should all check out this and any of Laughlin's unique photographic works.

4 out of 5 stars surrealistic and haunting view of new orleans.......1998-07-01

Laughlin's photography goes inside the beauty and decay of New Orleans and surrounds, yielding a surrealistic view that mirrors much literature, but few photographs, of the area. Laughlin often uses models whose faces are distant yet haunting, and has a marvelous eye for architecture. Much more than photographs of a place, these are photographs that become part of the place. Comments by Laughlin and others that accompany the photographs are definitely an enhancement.

I am a history buff and my ancestors arrived in New Orleans as early as 1831. This book helped me to make sense of the social-religious stratification of New Orleans. Jews, protestants, Slaves, freemen, firemen, police etc all buried in separate areas if not separate cemetaries. I hope the city keeps up these important parts of their history for future generations. Ny dad was at one time the chauffeur for William Helis who had his tomb made like the acropolis and imported soil from Greece to rest on. Very well done and informaive book.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST book on New Orleans Cemeteries in Existence!!!.......2005-01-04

Rob Florence's book is hands-down the best book on New Orleans cemeteries I have found--and, believe me, I've looked. I'm researching cemeteries. Not only is there tons of information, but he has also included personal stories of people who have loved ones entombed as well as of some who are entombed. I had the pleasure of meeting Rob Florence recently, and he is a walking and talking encyclopedia of knowledge. If you're taking a trip to New Orleans, sign up now to take one of his tours through Historic New Orleans Tours. You won't be disappointed. Before you do that, though, BUY THIS BOOK to take along with you!

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Buy!.......2003-02-28

I was very pleased with this book and read it from cover to cover.Besides having a fascinating text it's loaded with beautiful pictures, including a set of pictures of Anne Rice doing a publicity shoot in one of New Orleans's cemeteries.I really wasn't that familiar with the history of the burial grounds in New Orleans and I learned a LOT from this book. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who's into cemeteries, funeral history, and Anne Rice!

    5 out of 5 stars Spectacular pictures.......2002-11-08

I would never have went to New Orleans without visiting at least one of the famous above ground cemeteries - I was not disappointed! The history behind them is fascinating. They're built above ground, so that when there is any kind of flooding, the bodies don't float away since New Orleans is 700?ft below sea level. What was really neat to me though, is that one tomb, could and would be used for many generations of the same family. I thought it was a comforting thought to know that you wouldn't be burried alone, but in the exact same place as your ancestors. I think New Orleans people celebrate death, not that they're glad someone is gone, but that they're glad they had the chance to live and love them! There is just a kind of magic about the cemeteries, especially St. Louis #1, the oldest cemetery in the area. The photo's in this book capture that magic! Unfortunately, the section on #1 is small. This book includes many of the cemeteries including St. Louis 2 and 3, and Metairie, which is one of the nicest and most [costly] ones. I highly recommend this book for it's information and photography! If you go to see #1, it is in a not-so-good crime area that is improving, but make sure you go with a tour! The tour guides always have some interesting extra info!

5 out of 5 stars An Unexpected Enjoyment.......2001-09-06

We travel to and through Louisiana quite a bit. Because of this, I tend to pick up books about Louisiana, particularly Louisiana history. I bought this book because I liked the pictures. However, once I began reading this book, I realized that there was much more to the cemeteries than interesting statues. I can honestly say that I enjoyed reading this book and found it as informative as it was interesting.

This book begins with an introduction about cemeteries in Louisiana and then covers different cemeteries in Louisiana. Generally there is a history of the cemetery, an accounting of some of the more famous people buried in each cemetery and a lot of information.

For someone visiting Louisiana, particularly someone who is considering a tour of the cemeteries, this book is a must.

4 out of 5 stars Not your average graveyard book........1999-12-07

Filled with lovely photographs, this book is both entertaining and educational. It gives a brief history of the whys and wherefores of the burial practices in southern Louisiana, as well as describing how the tombs are cared for in the present. It also makes a great guide, if one is planning to visit the cemeteries in and around New Orleans. Easy to read, but never insulting to one's intelligence, this book gives a fascinating view of the cities of the dead.

4 out of 5 stars superb for visiting this cemetery........2001-11-01

This is a short and sweet introduction to St. Louis Cemetery # 1 in New Orleans. Although this is the type of book you can read at home it becomes much more relevent if you take it along with you and read it as you tour this cemetery. Very interesting information.

I rated it four stars rather than five because Robert Florence wrote another book called New Orleans Cemeteries. Much of the introduction of this book is almost word for word in the New Orleans Cemeteries. That made it redundant for those of us who have read the larger, more complete book about all the cemeteries in NO.

I enjoyed this book. It was filled with a lot of good information. The authors appreciation of cemeteries and their buildings and history shows in this writing. I particularly like that there are stories of some of the people buried in this cemetery. I would have liked to see more of that (Another reason for the four rating.)

Overall, I'd buy this book again and take it with me on my tour of this cemetery.

    5 out of 5 stars Fascinating history.......2001-03-15

I recently toured St. Louis Cemetery #1 with Robert Florence as the guide and was very impressed with his knowledge, not only of this graveyard, but of New Orleans in general. I purchased this book the next day at the Garden District Bookstore, famous as Ann Rice's neighborhood bookstore, and read the entire thing on the plane while flying home. The history of the cemetery and how it fits in with the history of New Orleans is just fascinating and written in a manner that makes for pleasant, easy reading.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the stange beauty of the cemetery.......2000-07-06

As a New Orleans native, I always enjoy playing tourist without having to risk my life to take in some of the wonderful buildings and architecture of my hometown. This simple but entertaining book takes you on a short (and I do mean short) tour of St. Louis Cemetery #1, the city's oldest (and also one of the most dangerous to visit) cemeteries. To outsiders, N.O.'s rows and rows of mausoleum walls is quite impressive. Thanks to New Orleans being seriously below sea level, above-ground burials have been a necessary part of death. This book explains all the mystery and even highlights some famous resting residents of the cemetery, such as Marie Laveau and Homer Plessy (of the famed Plessy v. Ferguson case). The author also reminds us that playing tourist in this cemetery can assure you might not come out of it. On the closing page, the author has reprinted the plaque from the Archidiocese explaining the lack of security in the cemetery and the dangers of touring alone. Group cemetery tours in New Orleans are abundant, so cemetery-sight-seeing alone is never a good idea. The book explains that as people leave N.O. for safer surroundings, they are also leaving the cemetery to fall into disrepair and decay. Many crypts are in terrible condition, some nearly destroyed by vandals and the elements. The book has a very poetic overtone to it, and you can feel the author's interest and intrigue with St. Louis Cemetery #1. I only gave it 4 stars because I believe the book could have been longer without sacrificing the rich tone it has. Excellent book, and the bibliography lists other great titles if you just can't get enough of the strage lure of the New Orleans cemeteries and their haunting architecture.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent presentation of the cemetery art of New Orleans........2006-07-14

This is a rare and out-of-print cemetery photos book. It weighs about 7lbs, measures 12"w x 15"h, and has 272 pages. It is also a limited edition of 1000 copies.

Consecrated Ground: Funerary Art Of New Orleans, Lisa Cook presents a collection of her photographs. These haunting images show cemetery memorials as seen through the particular artistic eye of the author. A brief history of each cemetery represented in this volume has been included to provide background information on cemetery origins, and, also, to give the photographic subject matter some context. The work within this volume reveals a collection of artistic memorials ranging the entire spectrum, from massive, costly monuments spiking heavenwards, to the most humble, handmade remembrances. The graves depicted here are in various states of maintainance, from the pristine to the totally collapsed and desecrated. These opposites evidence what many consider uniquely characteristic of New Orleans.

The majority of these tombs claim some form of architectural embellishment, but there are some heart-stoppingly beautiful ornamentations that set themselves apart, even from the average attractive tomb. The statuary, for the most part, are one-of-a-kind hand carved masterpieces usually depicting youthful, beautiful maidens or angels with their faces rendered into expressions of unbearable grief. However, there are a great number of cast-stone figures equally absorbing in their beauty.

Product description: This oversize and heavy volume features a full color,matte-laminate dust jacket, sewn binding, and is covered in a maroon leather-like vinyl fabric. The dust jacket frontcover depicts in full color one of the many photographs represented within this volume. Under the dust jacket, on the cover of the book fabric is a gold-stamped stylized crucifix measuring 8"w x 11"h. The spine is also stamped in gold, indicating the title, press and author information. Each volume weighs approximately 7 Lbs. The end papers are black and white, and are exquisitely detailed.
The pages inside the book are from a heavy duty, fine quality paper. The book pages/photographs are printed in black and white. The photos themselves are predominately full page size (12"w x 15"h).The images are huge and detailed. There are nine chapters of cemetery photos, plus bonus chapters discussing funerary symbols and their meanings, forms of interment throughout Louisiana (necrogeography), and a complete listing of all New Orleans cemeteries including the address/locale of each one. Lastly, an index and bibliography are included.

This book is finely presented and well worth the money.
