A frustrated grade school artist, Vashti sits slumped over her blank piece of paper at the end of art class. "I just CAN'T draw!" she tells her teacher. Her teacher first uses wit, then subtle yet clever encouragement to inspire her student to go beyond her insecurities and become, in the words of a younger boy who "can't" draw either, "a really great artist."
Peter H. Reynolds crafts a quiet, pleasing story in The Dot--one that will strike a chord with children who have outgrown the self-assurance of kindergarten and begun to doubt their own greatness. His marvelous watercolor, ink, and, yes, tea illustrations are appealing in a Quentin Blakey way, especially as Vashti begins to go wild with her dots. The delightfully open-ended conclusion will have readers of all ages contemplating how they can make their own mark in the world. Highly recommended. (Ages 5 to 9) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
With a simple, witty story and free-spirited illustrations, Peter H. Reynolds entices even the stubbornly uncreative among us to make a mark - and follow where it takes us.
Her teacher smiled. "Just make a mark and see where it takes you."
Art class is over, but Vashti is sitting glued to her chair in front of a blank piece of paper. The words of her teacher are a gentle invitation to express herself. But Vashti can’t draw - she’s no artist. To prove her point, Vashti jabs at a blank sheet of paper to make an unremarkable and angry mark. "There!" she says.
That one little dot marks the beginning of Vashti’s journey of surprise and self-discovery. That special moment is the core of Peter H. Reynolds’s delicate fable about the creative spirit in all of us.

Big kids and The Dot.......2007-09-16
I'm a middle school art teacher. I read the book to every class on the first day. Then, I gave them a few different media to use, (watercolor, oil pastels, markers) and asked them to "make a dot and see where it takes you" We made two rules, you had to know where your original dot was and you had to work for 15 minutes. The results are great and we are off to a great start. I also own ISH by the same author and use it a little later in the semester.
Every kid and most adults ..........2007-03-07
... need the empowering message delivered in this book. Simple and straight forward with a zinger of a last line of dialog. You won't forget this book.
The perfect gift.......2007-02-14
Anyone who works with children and reaches out to give them a sense of self-worth deserves this book as a gift. It is simple, gentle and touching. The Dot is the story of a child who is frustrated with the artwork she makes until a teacher tells her simply, "sign it". That small interaction gives the girl the confidence to take chances and grow until, ultimately, she's the one saying "sign it". This book speaks to the idea that teachers really do touch eternity...they never know where their influence will stop. If you have a favorite teacher, give him/her this book.
Great confidence booster!.......2007-01-10
A beautifully written book to inspire all ages to be more courageous.
The Dot.......2006-11-10
A reminder to adults to encourage: a reminder to young people to find self confidence and determination.

Teach about fine art in a fun and enjoyable way........2007-09-15
These are great books. We purchased our first book, Picnic with Monet when my daughter was a newborn. She is now 20 months old and she has the Mini Masters Boxed Set (a great deal) and Quiet Time With Cassat. She loves these books! She will bring them to me one-by-one and ask me to read each one over and over. I think she enjoys the lyrical quality of the text as well as the paintings. She loves pointing out the different items in each painting and commenting on what is taking place (playing, sleeping, dancing, etc.) It's interesting that even though some elements in certain paintings are rather abstract, she still knows what she is looking at. I love fine art and grew up seeing many of these paintings, so I'm glad that I can expose my daughter to the Masters in such a fun and positive way.
Great books for any age!.......2007-06-19
My daughter is 2 1/2 and she LOVES her Van Gogh book. Brings it to me all the time to read to her. In all the books there is great rhyming, short phrasing (for similarly short attention spans--great for toddlers!), and beautiful paintings.
My personal favorites are Degas and Van Gogh. I was rather let down by the Monet; I thought they chose works that didn't represent what Monet did best and was best known for, but no kid is going to care about that. They actually work together to tell a story, which is nice compared to the more randomly chosen paintings in other of these books.
The Matisse has some crazy paintings in it but they are bright and boldly colored, sure to capture a kid's attention. (Some people have complained about the two "nudes" in the Matisse book, but realistically, the figures are not anatomically detailed and in my opinion, not at all offensive or embarrassing.)
I love these because they familiarize children with famous works of art and artists without them even knowing it and the writing/poetry in the books is fun to read and keeps my daughter reading along. Highly recommended, as well as the other individually sold books (Seurat, Cassatt, Picasso, & Renoir)!
Great board books for anyone.......2007-05-17
Love the text and the images. Great introduction for any age child to get familiar with famous artwork. Both my 5 year old and my 2 year old enjoy them. The box set is also a great deal.
great set.......2007-03-19
My husband and I really enjoy sharing these books with our daughter. I had read the other reviews which raised some reservations about the Matisse nudes, but they are just very simple line drawings. If my daughter ever comments on it I think I'll just point out how art shows the beauty of the human figure.
Each of the books has a nice winding down at the end which makes them great before naps or bedtime.
Beautiful Books!.......2007-01-16
These are among my favorite books. I give this set as a gift every time I get the chance. They are so soothing and beautiful, not to mention educational. My 3-year-old son saw a print of The Starry Night when we were out, and he said, "Look Mom, it's Van Gogh!"
Book Description

Children will enjoy learning about art, as they join in on Katie's exciting journey.
Customer Reviews:
Great art book series for little ones!.......2007-05-07
We love the Katie books, a great way to introduce your child to art masterpieces while having an adventure in the story!
WONDERFUL.......2007-01-28
A wonderful story that your 5 year old will love! A fun and engaging story that introduces your child to art (pointillism, in this case).
My Katie loves Katie.......2006-12-13
My two-year-old daughter Katie cannot get enough of this book. It comes with us wherever we go, we read it day and night, and she has been wearing her bathing suit for three weeks now because she wants to be 'just like Katie.' There is something extremely magical about this book! Also, I like this story better than some of the others -- Katie is less of a rascal in this one.
Delightful.......2005-09-02
I read this with my 6 year old. We checked out a book about Seurat at the same time so I could show her the actual paintings. She giggled as we read. It was fun for the art to come alive.
Read it Again!.......2005-08-10
This book takes the reader on a journey through a young girls imagination and provides a unique exposure for young children in art appreciation. The end of each book provides information on the artist, materials used to create the art form and the location of the painting. Both of my daughters, age two and five, really enjoyed reading the collection of Katie's adventures. I would recommend buying the hardcover books for long lasting use, because you will be reading it again and again!
Book Description
Julie is a happy little girl who lives in Paris, but she wishes she could walk in a country garden. Julie is pleased when her mother decides to take her to visit the most wonderful garden in the world, owned by a great friend of the family. They arrive at their destination, and for this little girl it is like walking in a dreamy world where twisting plants grow as tall as trees. When Julie's dog runs away, she asks the gardener to help find her pet, and soon she and the gardener are friends. But this amiable, bearded old man is a very unusual gardener, for not only does he cultivate his many plants, he also paints beautiful pictures of them. Julie has made a friend of the great impressionist painter, Claude Monet. Based on a true story about the daughter of another fine artist, Berthe Morisot, this charmingly illustrated picture book includes reproductions by author-illustrator Laurance Anholt of a famous waterlilies painting, which Monet completed in his garden at Giverny, a few miles from Paris.
Customer Reviews:
Magical Garden inspired my students.......2006-08-12
Anholt's lovely book about Monet is my favorite of the series about famous artists. He demystifies impressionism and actually inspires children to paint their own "magical gardens"!!
Art Appreceation for children.......2005-11-11
Fine art apprecation was a lost thing among adults let alone children, encouraging an understanding of art at a young age will encorage intrest in art in children and their caregivers alike. Help kids enjoy art and culture while reading a fun story. With this book, (and the others in the series) they introduce kids to the famous artworks of great painters throughout history while encoraging a childs imagination to be creative and tell a story with each picture.
This story is even better because it is based on factual people, even the little girl. She embarks on a journey with her mother to visit a friend..the little girl ends up chasing her runaway dog on the trip and finds herself in a most magnificent garden..only to find out that is the "friend" they were going to visit. This book is wonderful, historical, educational, and fun. It encourages children to think about paintings, and to form images and stories for each one, to think about "what would it be like to be inside that painting".
Great for Toddlers.......2005-08-13
The Magical Garden of Claude Monet is a great way to expose young children to impressionist art. My son loved the story of Julie in Monet's garden. Julie is a young French girl who takes a train with her Mother to visit Monet's garden. As they arrive into the countryside, her dog runs away and is found in Monet's garden. Soon the painter and Julie become friends. The illustrations are bright and colorful. You almost feel as if you are inside one of Monet's paintings. Children will be captivated by the story as well as the beautiful pictures.
Breathtaking journey for children into Monet's paintings.......2004-10-16
I have long been a fan of Linnea in Monet's Garden - so I was very excited to find this new series of books by Laurence Anholt. Anholt's approach to introducing children to these artists - he has covered Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, Degas, and DaVinci - is to use their art to create the backgrounds and settings for his characters. This book in particular is my favorite of the series because it is crowned with a fold out of Monet's vivid Waterlilies with a tiny boat floating across it carrying the story's members - Monet and a little girl who happens upon his garden. Before it is over, the little girl plucks one of the lilies from the famous painting as a memoir. My daughter loves this picture - and it is almost surreal to me to see Monet's art coming to life in such a manner. I can hardly wait until she visits the museum and sees the real painting. Watching her make this connection should be very exciting.
Aside from this stunning mixture of Monet's work and Anholt's own lush artwork - carefully drawn to compliment the featured art - the book gives some great educational information about Monet by weaving it into the story - all this without ever starting to sound like a textbook. The story retains its' focus and its' charm without becoming boring. That is an amazing accomplishment in my opinion.
I hope to purchase the entire set for a lovely and educational Christmas gift. These are sure to become beloved classics. Any children's book that learns to entertain both child and parent equally often does.
Book Description
Many years ago, Marie hoped to be a famous ballerina, but because her family had too little money for lessons she began modeling at the ballet school. The painter for whom she modeled was the artist, Edgar Degas. As Degas' figure of The Little Dancer took shape, Marie began to feel sympathy for the bad-tempered artist. When the sculpture was finished, thousands of art lovers came to see the statue, making Marie the most famous dancer of all. Here is an exquisite introduction to the life of a great nineteenth-century French artist, with beautiful impressionistic illustrations and reproductions of Degas' own work.
Customer Reviews:
Must read if travelling to Paris.......2006-07-27
My 9 year old daughter read this book just before we went to Paris and literally dragged me to the Musee d'Orsay to see all works by Edgar Degas. She then read everything else by Anholt and is now chafing at the bit to see works by Picasso. Anholt's books are wonderfully illustrated, show the works of the artists, and know how to appeal to a child's imagination. We are fans.
Degas and the Little Dancer: A Story About Edgar Degas.......2005-09-11
Laurence Anholt created a wonderful opportunity for youngsters, and adults, to learn about art history. Never before have I ever experienced Degas in this manner. I have given this book to many 5-year olds interested in ballet as well as art. It's become a treasured book for both the child and the parents.
Another great story by Laurence Anholt.......2005-08-13
Degas and the Little Dancer is a true story about Marie, a young ballerina, who posed for Degas to pay for her sick father's doctor. She always dreamed of becoming world famous and thanks to Degas she did. The story has beautiful illustrations. This is a great way to introduce children to art. However, the story was a bit lengthy for my three-year- old. I would recommend it for children who have longer attention spans than a toddler.
charming introduction into art for youngsters.......2003-12-16
This book serves more than one purpose. It is a short, but entertaining read for a child or for a parent to read to their children. The story is about Marie, a young girl in France who is loved by her poor, but hard-working parents. They work long hours to save money to send her to ballet school - as it is her dream to become the world's most famous ballerina.
When her father becomes ill and can no longer afford to pay for her classes, the famous artist Edgar Degas offers to pay her for modeling for him. He is mean, short-tempered and impatient with Marie, making her hold poses for hours until her neck aches.
One night, however, she finds out just a little of what is under the surface of Degas' rough exterior and feels sorry for him, giving him her long hair ribbon.
Even her modeling pay cannot sustain the cost of her classes, so she must give up her dream. Later, she and her parents receive an invitation to a gallery showing of Degas' work - the center piece is the only sculpture of his ever displayed during his lifetime - it is of Marie - and unlike other statues, hers is wearing a tutu and the beautiful hair ribbon she gave him.
The story is not only entertaining, but it tells children that while some people may act mean or rude, it may be because they are hurting on the inside - and extending friendship to someone who behaves in such a manner can truly make a difference in their life and in yours.
The story is peppered with illustrations of Marie and her family, as well as photos of Degas' paintings and of course, his famous sculpture. Information about the names of the paintings and the museums where they are displayed is also cited at the end of the book.
This doesn't have to be just a book for girls - even young boys will see a universal truth - we can always have dreams and even though they may not come true the way we envisioned them, we never know what wonderful surprises are around the corner.
Charming little book with lovely illustrations.......2003-11-22
This is the story of Marie van Goethen, a young dancer at the Paris Opera Ballet School who posed for Edgar Degas (1824-1917). He created the sculpture, "The Little Dancer" based on Marie's likeness. This was the only Degas sculpture to be exhibited during his lifetime. This charming figure was wearing a tutu and a wig.
The illustrations in this children's book are beautiful and even some of Degas' own paintings are included. I wish that more of Degas' life had been included in this story. I also feel that this book would have been perfect if more of his paintings were displayed with descriptions of each work of art.
This book is a good introduction to Degas and should be targeted towards lower elementary students.
Book Description
A creative spirit learns that thinking "ish-ly" is far more wonderful than "getting it right" in this gentle new fable from the creator of the award-winning picture book THE DOT.
Ramon loved to draw. Anytime. Anything. Anywhere.
Drawing is what Ramon does. It¹s what makes him happy. But in one split second, all that changes. A single reckless remark by Ramon's older brother, Leon, turns Ramon's carefree sketches into joyless struggles. Luckily for Ramon, though, his little sister, Marisol, sees the world differently. She opens his eyes to something a lot more valuable than getting things just "right." Combining the spareness of fable with the potency of parable, Peter Reynolds shines a bright beam of light on the need to kindle and tend our creative flames with care.

Liberating without being corny.......2007-06-16
Some inspiring books are just too heavy handed. This one seems so natural and child-like that the concept just flows out of the pages.
Inspirational!!.......2007-05-24
I bought this book for my four year old son who had practically zero interest in creating art. He would take crayon to paper for about 14.6 seconds before tossing both aside and moving on to his other toys. After several readings of Ish, he (independently and unprovoked) picked up a marker and paper and drew something person-ish!!! As he was drawing, he was telling me what the body parts were. I was glowing and speechless. Since then, he has been walking around proud as can be with his art and creating more to boot. I am so happy to have found this book. I think every child has a creative side and I'm happy to have found a way to get my little guy to express his ish! If you have a reluctant artist, I highly recommend this purchase! As a matter of fact, I even recommend it for the most artful child as a reminder to draw happily and with abandon!
Ish.......2007-04-09
Ish is a wonderful children's book that addresses perfection and lack there of it. I have shared it with my fifth graders for the sheer fact that nothing in the world is perfect, and we all can use a little "ish" at times in our lives. We cannot always be so hard on ourselves or the work that we do. We have to accept that in all of us there is uniquness and perfection, however it will always look differently for all of us. I would reccomend this to everyone to help realize our potential.
Buy it today!.......2007-02-14
You can't go wrong with this book! It's appropriate for anyone, anytime! It should be on every teacher's and parent's bookshelf. I love it. :)
Cute Story.......2007-02-07
Love to read this story aloud to students in primary grades. It also could be linked to using suffixes. :)

Books About Origami .......2007-07-06
I love origami and I love children's books. This story combines both and inspires one to start folding the animals. I recommend this book for children about three years old ( although folding is beyond the capabilities of this age group).
FOLD ME A POEM.......2007-04-19
The words are beautiful and inspiring and the illustrations catch the attention of young children. There was a sense of awe and anticipation when I read this book to a group. I was impressed with the free teacher's guide on the author's and illustrator's websites. I was grateful for the folding diagrams and origami resources on the sites as well. This book appeals to adults as well as children. My children and their friends have had hours of rainy-day pleasures all due to FOLD ME A POEM. This book is a "must have" for any child's library.
Where are the directions?.......2006-11-05
I am a teacher and found this book on the author's website when I was searching for origami links. While the picture book is a great introduction to the art of origami, I had assumed there would be directions included to create the origami animals the little boy in the book made in the story. I was disappointed that no directions were included, nor were they available on the author's website. As a story book, it is beautiful though.
A Delight.......2006-10-21
This books is a delight for anyone who has experimented with Origami and knows its frustractions and rewards. Basic orgigami subjects are captured through the combination engaging poems and illustrations (each enhancing the enjoyment of the other). This book made our family smile over and over again! My favorite captures a moment of oragami uncertainty...

Inspiring and Entertaining.......2005-04-18
Fold Me a Poem is a wonderful example of a book being more than the sum of its parts. Inside the covers of this stunning creation, the poems and illustrations meld to create a picture book that is both inspiring and entertaining.
Each of George's short poems is exquisitely illustrated with an acrylic painting depicting a young boy among his origami creations. In "Spring," for example, we read:
At last
my tulips
arrive
wearing
paper crowns.
And thus we see-surrounding the large, black print-patterned and boldly colorful origami tulips.
While a few of the poems are about possibilities, the majority concern themselves with animals. A double-page spread shows a large yellow table festooned with rabbits at one end and foxes at the other. In between the boy has placed blocks (for the rabbits' protection). On another page, the pink ostrich receives no such protection and is attacked by the boy's cat. "Glue? Staple? Tape? Band-Aid?" The boy tries to decide how best to make repairs.
Midway through the book we find the large, green dragon on a rampage-having knocked down the other animals-and must be reigned in. Later on, we see a herd of colorful cows hungrily "eyeing the green paper. Oh. Grass!"
As the young boy prepares for bed, he hangs his own origami star against the darkening sky. Soon he hears "rustling/ soft/ papery/ whisper-thumps ./ Is someone dancing?" It appears so: the penguin and the ostrich (now sporting band-aids) move toward one another.
The book includes a list of suggested books on making origami.
Classroom Uses: We took this book into two classrooms. The first was a second-grade special-education classroom. When we finished reading the book, the students, of course, wanted to make their own origami creations. We had prepared paper so the students could create origami dogs. You will find the instructions in a wonderful downloadable teacher's guide here on the illustrator's website. The students then wrote haiku poems about their animals.
On another occassion we brought the book into a seventh-grade language arts classroom. The students were in the middle of a script writing unit. Again, taking a lesson from the teacher's guide, we had the students write a script using the origami animals they had created as characters.
Highly recommeded. Suitable for district-wide purchase.
Our only suggestions is that you have plenty of origami paper and a set of instructions ready when you read this.

In this junior version of Joan Steiner's award-winning Look-Alikes, everyday places (such as houses, movie theaters, and kitchens) are constructed from everyday objects (such as crackers, pencils, pretzels, and seashells). Simple, rhyming text accompanies the clever pictures ("To Look-Alike Land! We're blasting full throttle/ On a spaceship that looks like a THERMOS BOTTLE."), but the real focus is the puzzle of identifying the more than 700 objects in the 11 crisply photographed double-page scenes. Younger children will enjoy this book with a parent, discovering such anomalies as train wheels made from daisies and curtains made from lasagna noodles. Older children may enjoy playing competitive games, such as taking turns finding look-alikes or racing to see who can find the most in a set amount of time. (Ages 2 to 10) --Richard Farr
Book Description
Welcome to Look-Alike Land, where the more you look, the more you see! Like its predecessor, Look-Alikes Jr. features 3-D picture puzzles, but this time invites even the youngest child to join in the fun by featuring simpler, easier-to-find look-alikes in childlike settings. There are 11 scenes - house, parlor, kitchen, bedroom, school bus, classroom, construction site, movie lobby, train, farm, and rocket - each with 50+ objects to identify (700+ in total). Look for a cement mixer made out of a mustard bottle, kitchen cabinets made out of cakes of soap, and a bed built with crayons and pasta! Fun for all ages. This best-selling book is back with a brand new series design and a striking new cover.

Wonderful books!.......2007-01-04
These books are spectacular, we play "I spy" with them and see something new every time.
The more you look, the more you like!.......2003-11-06
What a wonderful book! I bought the book as a gift for my nephew and enjoyed it so much I nearly didn't want to give it away! Needless to say my nephew was delighted and loves the book. It's a great way to spend quality time with the younger generation, you will get as much pleasure as they do, finding all the cleverly arranged objects. A great way to wile away a cold winter's eve.
Attention.......2002-12-13
This book is a great tool to help your child closely observe details. A short attention span can quickly be expanded by both child and parent as you turn each page of this book.
I have used it with my daughter from age 5-8 and now with my 3 year old son. I usually ask them to find items on the page and then discuss how it is neat how the item was used to represent something entirely different. This is great to help them expand their imagination and see outside of the box.
Sometimes when you just don't feel like reading some night this gives you a great break. This is a great book and much better than Where's Waldo.
An utterly engrossing way to spend several hours.......2002-09-19
Joan Steiner's "Look-Alikes, Jr." is a wonderful follow-up to her 1998 "Look-Alikes." This self-taught artist employs everyday items from chess pieces to lasagna noodles, from nail polish bottles to keys, from crackers to ink pens, to construct the most completely realistic little scenes. There are spaceships blasting off towards outer space; middle-class living rooms; classrooms; general stores, and more, all of which are chock-full of items Steiner employs to look like something else. The aforementioned lasagna noodles? Yes, they're here--as curtains! And they look improbably wonderful as curtains!
This is certainly a treat for kids. But you may find that the adults end up buying their own copies of "Look-Alikes, Jr." just so they can sit in peace and be engrossed for hours on their own without having to share this wonderful book with the younger set! Highly recommended!
Beware: time trap!!!!.......2002-03-17
Don't even look at the cover of this book unless you have at least an hour to spare. It starts -- isn't that a thimble? a calendar page? a domino? a hacksaw? And the next thing you know it's 'way, 'way past bedtime. No matter how old you are or what your bedtime is.

alternate morals.......2007-09-09
It's a cute story, but I'm a little unsure about the morals behind a squirrell using someone's paints without permission. It's kind of...um..stealing. It's cute for a young reader who may not yet have the concept of property.
So fun to read!.......2007-08-02
Might be a little confusing for kids because of the big words (I had to look a few up!) but it is so much fun to read. I really liked that my son questioned a lot of the words he hadn't heard before so he learned some vocabulary too. At first I thought it wasn't a "kid's" book but now I think it's awesome.
PERFECT FOR READING ALOUD...........2006-10-03
With no intended offense to Mr. Lithgow, I've not watched many episodes of "Third Rock from the Sun". I've never seen him on Broadway. Chances are, I'll miss his new show that's slated for TV's fall season. But without a doubt, I am one of his biggest fans, and so are our twins.
Mr. Lithgow's affinity for cadence, rhyme and the wonder of under-used words is nothing shy of invigorating. Mr. Lithgow doesn't shy from vocabulary that may be naively viewed as "daunting" to child readers/listeners. Instead, he embraces the intricacies and beauty of language. How excited I was to be asked to define "peregrination" to my listening audience! Not since Judy Sierra's "Wild About Books" have I discovered a book I so look forward to reading aloud repeatedly; our 5-year-old twins feel the same about hearing it.
Our duo received this book as a birthday gift from great friends, and it's been read almost daily since. For a museum-minded family such as ours, the heroic squirrel (of the title) embodies all our creative and curatorial cravings.
C.F. Payne's inimitable talent, and familiarity with the styles of great masters, facilitates illustrations that visually companion the text pluperfectly.
After enjoying Micawber, I dare you not to rush out and purchase The Remarkable Farkle McBride !
Great pictures inspired by great paintings.......2006-08-11
As the daughter of an art teacher who spent lots of her childhood in art museums, I loved this book. My kids like it, too. The rhymes are fun and inspired, the illustrations are beautiful and witty, and the payoff -- Micawber's collection of works, featuring the eponymous squirrel in various classic paintings -- is a riot. This is one of the books I'll keep for the grandkids.
My [...] recognizes Monet's work!.......2006-04-18
We were given "Micawber" as a baby gift. When I first read through it I wasn't sure that it would ever be a favorite, given the high-level vocabulary, so I stuck it on the shelf. When my son was about [...] he pulled it off the bookshelf at bedtime. We've now read it at least once a day for FOUR MONTHS. And my son and I still love it! Thanks to this book, my son loves to point out the various paintings in the illustrations (great illustrations, BTW), he yells "Micawber" every time he sees a squirrel, and he's fascinated with painting of any kind (fingerpainting, paint with water, even playing with my old eyeshadows). I had no idea that a 2 year old could develop an appreciation for fine art and GRE level vocabulary, but it's true. Yes, perhaps not all pre-pre-schoolers will love this book (and neither will all 4-8 year olds or parents), but those who do love it gain so much from it!
Book Description
"Where Camille lived, the sunflowers grew so high they looked like real suns. . .One day a strange man arrived in Camille's town. He had a straw hat and a yellow beard." So begins this fascinating tale of Camille, a little boy who is the son of a small-town postman. Camille meets the man with the yellow beard, and they become friends. This bearded man is a painter named Vincent van Gogh. The story, based on a true-life incident, is beautifully illustrated in full color by the author. This unusual picture storybook will appeal to children who love art-and also to children who simply enjoy a good story.

WELL WRITTEN, WELL ILLUSTRATED AND VERY USEFUL........2007-05-04
This is the type of book that I do wish there were more of. I certainly am not going to go into plot, story-line, etc. here, as other reviewers have done so already and have accomplished it quite well. This story is based on a true encounter with the artist Vincent Van Gogh. This book is a wonderful tool to introduce children to the wonderful artist. It also has some wonderful lesson within it's pages dealing with acceptance and tolerance of those who are just a bit different than ourselves. The author has done a wonderful job with the text and the illustrations fit perfectly and are very well executed. The story is told through the eyes of a small boy. I have read this to quite a number of classes of children and they have all enjoyed it, which, when you think about it, is a pretty good indorsement for any children's book. This is certainly one you will want to add to your child's library.
Beautiful book!.......2007-03-01
I bought this book for my 6-year-old son, albiet with a little hesitation as to whether or not he would be interested in something like this, since his passions seem to be more with Spiderman, Harry Potter, etc. However he absolutely loves this book! He asks me to read it to him almost every night. And tonight after we finished it, he asked me where we could go to see Van Gogh's paintings in real life because "I really want to go and see them!" (Hmmm...this could be a good excuse to take a little vacation to Holland!) I am ordering several more of this book for him to give as birthday gifts to his friends and cousins.
a good starting point.......2006-07-25
This is a very well written and illustrated story about a young boy who encounters Vincent Van Gogh and befriends him. It is based on a true story. While it is well done and my children love the story, I was a little bit disappointed that it included only imitations of Van Gogh's paintings and not actual pictures of them. I felt that even though there is a sad element to this story, the author did an excellent job of making it suitable even for small children, and sparks their interest in learning more about his life and works. We will be using this book this year for our homeschooled kindergartner and preschooler, and I am sure that this will be a great starting point for further learning and discussions. I give this book four stars and highly recommend it.
bringing van gogh to life.......2006-03-11
i used this book to teach an art project to pre-schoolers and it was perfect! they enjoyed the story very much and it made the portraits of Camille's family, which they had already seen in other lessons, come to life and at the end when they see the picture of "14 sunflowers" they became excited about creating their own sunflowers out of fimo clay. A beautiful book and a well written story.
Lovely and interest-provoking.......2004-08-04
This is simply one of the best books I ever got my daughter. When she was about 1-1/2 years old, we took her to a Van Gogh exhibition and she stared, absolutely transfixed, at "Wheat Field with Crows." So when I saw this book, it seemed like she would really enjoy it, and she has. Note that it is not an entirely happy story, true to Van Gogh's life, so it is maybe not for tiny kids. But even recomposed by Anholt, the paintings are still amazingly vivid and interesting, and led us on a web search to find more (http://www.vangoghgallery.com/ is the BEST spot!). If I could only have a few books to read to my daughter for the rest of her childhood, this would be on my list, and hers as well.
