Customer Reviews:
Pretty useful book on cold-formed design .......2007-01-20
I have not gone through 1 chapter yet. But the inroduction is already illuminating about aspects of cold-formed members, which are not so clearly explained in other books I've come across. The only setback is it is not in SI units, making it hard to use in places like Singapore.
This is a best one........2001-10-16
Cold formed steel is cheap and widely supply in some country. By using the code in this book, I can reduce so much material cost from expensive imported wide flange into a self made double I beam by using 2 C light lip. This book is practical can be use in real construction by following detailed example.
The code is very new and up to date. This is the book you should not miss..
Extensive discussion on physical behavior of steel members.......1998-05-05
Writen as a text book, this work looks at in particular the behavior of cold formed steel members. It gives complete and useful information regarding the strength of thin elements common to cold formed steel and a guide to design. The information is also very applicable to larger hot rolled steel member design in that it illustrates what design assumptions are taken for granted when designing with thicker members. Subjects included are flexural and compression members, cylindrical tubular members, connections, diaphragms, shell roofs structures, corrugated sheet, and composite design. Overall a very useful resource.

The bible.......2007-04-11
If you are a designer or installer of Solar Hot Water and Heating-
Buy this book. I know its expensive, but it is worth it!
Nothing I have seen from the US is even close.
One small draw back is that you will have to convert from metric.

Customer Reviews:
A Must Read for Intermediate/Advanced Masonry Students.......2005-01-06
If you want to build more than a backyard wall or barbeque, the information contained here will put you on the right track. Most masons will follow a building plan, but this book gives the framework for the plans. This text will cover in depth structural design and problem solving associated with layout, material, and construction of masonry structures.
Not technical enough.......1998-10-31
As the previous reviewer, I also am a structural engineer and have not found the book to be very useful for my line of work. It does have some nice details and empirical information that would probably be useful for architects and contractors.
Great for Architects, not so great for Engineers.......1997-05-04
I found the masonry details to be very good in showing how a masonry building goes together and as such would be very good for Architects and Contractors. However, as a Structural Engineer I was looking for a book with more detail regarding the design methods and equations. I was looking for a book that would teach a beginning engineer the basics of masonry design. After the engineer had mastered the basics and could design a masonry building using the equations then, with that understanding and experience, could make use of the design tables in this book.
We have this book in our library and I can say that it is seldom used. We design masonry buildings using hand calculations, the UBC and computer programs.
Bottom line is that this book is great for Architects and Contractors building small masonry structures. It is not as useful for the serious Structural engineer.
Book Description
Structure As Architecture provides readers with an accessible insight into the relationship between structure and architecture, focusing on the design principles that relate to both fields. Over one hundred case studies of contemporary buildings from countries across the globe including the UK, the US, France, Germany, Spain, Hong Kong and Australia are interspersed throughout the book. The author has visited and photographed each of these examples and analyzed them to show how structure plays a significant architectural role, as well as bearing loads. This is a highly illustrated sourcebook, providing a new insight into the role of structure, and discussing the point where the technical and the aesthetic meet to create the discipline of architecture.
* Presents a comprehensive analysis of how building structure contributes to architecture
* Connects architectural design ideas and structure in the context of contemporary architecture, materials and structure
* Highly illustrated, providing a sourcebook of architectural and engineering design ideas

Please read.......2006-06-18
If architecture is viewed as ideas of establishing different relationships between people and space, then structure is the first step to achieve these relationship in reality. How do we appropriately use different structure elements in reality, what kind of architectural effects will them create? These questions are answered in Andrew W.Charleson's book 'Structure as architecture'. The book is divided into chapters such as function/exterior/interior of buildings,structural detailing, light and structures and so on, which are discussed from both theoretical and practical approach. With enormous amount of first hand photo illustrations, the book also gives a comprehensive visual case studies to the reader. It is enjoyable to read and I recommend this stunning book to all architectural, building science students as well as architects and engineers in practice.
Compulsory purchase for Architects and Engineers alike.......2005-12-10
Although Architecture and Engineering are really only different sides of the same coin, they are often treated in completely different ways. Certainly they are normally approached from different directions. Charleson's book addresses this lack of continuity, and reduces structural diagrams down to a simple level (good for architecture students) as well as opening up the ideas of light and air and structure to thoseof a more engineering bent... And from all accounts he's a pretty inspirational lecturer as well, with the students fizzing away with excitement.
End result: if you are a student of Architecture or Engineering, then rush out and buy this book. Invaluable source of knowledge - guaranteed to help you through those exams...
Excellent book on the topic STRUCTURE and ARCHITECTURE.......2005-11-28
As per name, this book provides an excellent reference to building structures that expresses its architectural ideas. The book is well written and provides examples from around the world! ^_^
A student's opinion.......2005-10-04
I am a student studying architecture, and have found this book to be a very useful reference.
The first time I used it, I was looking for specific examples of "expressive" architecture. In the index, I found a long list of qualities such as "grounded", "light", "dynamic" etc. with references to pages illustrating specific projects whose structure has those qualities. The clear, full colour photos really help you get the feel of the buildings.
I don't know of any other book that I could have looked to for that purpose. Of course, the content is useful for numerous other reasons as well.
Book Description
The reissue of a design classicâthe book that revolutionized the practice of architecture.

Book Description
This book applauds the union of architecture and engineering both today and throughout the history of building and construction.
The relationship between the two fields is multifaceted. Some architects may have had an engineering background, and some engineers have experience of architecture. Some unacknowledged engineers have stood modestly behind great architects, and a number of architects have been encouraged and supported by their engineer-collaborators in designing structures that appear to defy gravity.
Architects + Engineers = Structures focuses on the ideal: on a cohesive building design team where the members contribute equally, resulting in unique and exceptional designs. These are architects and engineers who entice beauty into buildings not just with lines on paper and calculations but with intuition, innovation and feeling for the needs of people, materials, strength, proportion, lightness and elegance.
Structures featured include:
* dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence
* Church of the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona
* Eiffel Tower, Paris
* Sydney Opera House, Sydney
* Marina City, Chicago
* Olympic Swimming Pool Arena, Tokyo
* London Eye, London
* many other international examples, both celebrated and less well-known

From the shadows emerge.......2002-07-28
This is an Interesting and important book illustrating the necessity to have a cohesive building team of understanding professionals in order to design 'beautiful'
architecture. The book brings forward the forgotten engineers who stood in the shadow of famous architects, such as Frank Kornacker, Joachim Cardozo, Jaroslav Polivka and others without whom the 'great, and heroic' architecture could not have been created. This is a book that Should be read by every engineer
and architect who is truly interested in the building design and
collaborative working environment. It brings to light that Architecture that is art and science is achieved by team work, and an understanding of two disciplines that are intricately sutured together
