Want to throw an A-list party without spending heaps of time and money? In Style Parties: The Complete Guide to Easy, Elegant Entertaining is the one-stop guide to making every event stylish and personal, and it proves once and for all that entertaining at home can be easy, fabulous, and fun. Organized in three sections, the book includes: The basics of party preparation, including what to serve and how to create the perfect atmosphere. Complete party guides for every occasion, from dinner parties for 8 to cocktail parties for 30. A listing of the countrys top resources for food, drink, and dcor, from artisanal cheeses and exotic chocolates to flowers and flatwear. The book begins with the Basics section, which arms readers with the essentials of party planning. In thorough yet accessible detail, this section provides tips on how to plan a menu, stock a bar, set a table, serve cocktails, and feed a crowd, efficiently and with finesse. Also covered are tips on invitations, decorations, and music, which set the tone for a special occasion. The heart of the book is twenty of the most popular party guides published in In Style magazine over the last five years. Playful themes, fresh and simple recipes, sexy drinks, elegant dcor, handy timetables, and a non-stuffy approach make it easy to stay on top of all the little details. Readers can follow the guides closely, mix up elements from different guides to suit their unique vision, or simply use them as inspiration. The festivities, dreamed up by top celebrity party planners on both coasts, include: Dinner Parties: Everything from a simple Saturday night supper to a Tuscan feast and a Mexican fiesta. Holiday Parties: Thanksgiving, holiday cocktails, and a New Years Eve celebration. Theme Parties: Halloween cocktails; viewing parties to enjoy at-home entertainment, from the Oscars and the Super Bowl to favorite television programs; game night; and girls night in. Showers: Bridal and baby showers. Summer Parties: Outdoor cocktails, backyard barbeque, and luau. Birthday Parties: Dinner at home, cocktails, surprise parties, theme parties, restaurant dinners, and milestone birthdays. With its elegant illustrations and vibrant images of celebrity-studded events, colorful drinks, luscious foods, and sophisticated dcor, In Style Parties puts the fun of parties first. This beautifully designed, all-purpose, indispensable guide shows readers how to think like a movie star while organizing like a caterer. The reward is in enjoying your own party as much as your guests. And In Style Parties makes that a reality.

Sure-Fire.......2007-07-18
This great recipe book does it all for you--gives you the recipes built for 10 or more, which is invaluable; the timetable for planning the meal starting, sometimes, as far back as three weeks; helps you with decor, color scheme, and centerpieces; and pulls it all together for you.
Parties are organized by seasons (several summer outdoor parties along with comfortable autumn dinners); holidays (includes traditional halloween and Thanksgiving but also a contemporary Christmas and New YEars party) and Themes (Oscar party, game night).
I have had great success with just about everything I've pulled from this book in terms of recipes. They are road-tested and inventive, so that even the Backyard Luau (not the most original theme) has twists on the main dishes and appetizers that are creative enough for the most seasoned Hawaiian diner.
My particular favorite was the Girlfriend's Birthday Party which I threw for my mother-in-law's most recent birthday; the pink peonies, rose-scented votives, and be-ribboned chair backs were simple but together made a beautiful backdrop for the light and delicious fare. The flavorful spinach-bacon-herb salad was such a hit I now make it every time I get the chance and always to rave reviews.
Highly Recommended
A Variety of Party Ideas!!!.......2007-01-09
I read Instyle Magazine, and always would look in the Party/Host section. How great to have a book dedicated to them. Detailed great ideas, colorful pictures for inspiration. I always lend it to any friend that is getting ready to host a party or just for fun.
Great book.......2006-11-09
I found this book to be very informative and inspiring. I found the 16 parties to be the best part; I could've done without the 'basics' in the beginning. Also, since I like decorating the most, I thought that they could've focused more on the room or table decor rather than a closeup of a vegetable or drink, for example. But overall a really helpful book!
Loaded with help for your parties!.......2006-02-20
This book is loaded with help and ideas, and will save even the most clueless host/hostess. You get tips for setting up your bar, decorations, and invitations. You get information about wines and beers. But the best part are the individual party ideas. There are cocktail parties and dinner parties. Holiday parties and unique theme parties. Each party comes with a schedule for planning ahead, so you don't have to do any mad scrambling around the day of the party. Each party comes with a unique "signature drink", so you can cut costs by just offering a signature drink, wine, and beer. There are recipies for each party and shortcut ideas if you don't have time or don't want to cook. There are also music ideas and decor ideas, in good detail, to really help you. No other entertaining book I've ever seen includes help with so many aspects of your party so well. And unlike most entertaining books, there's a resource section so you know where you can actually find the items featured in the parties (food, decor, etc.), so you don't see something you love but can't copy. (There is one problem, however, I've found some of their resources only sell wholesale and won't sell to you unless you have a reseller ID, which is really disappointing. They should have only included retail resources anyone can use.) Everyone who either entertains or likes to daydream about it should have this book - the ideas are unique and fabulous. I bought this book because I needed an idea for our wedding rehearsal dinner. Within 20 minutes of looking through the book I had a brilliant idea (there is no "rehearsal dinner", but I found a perfect theme party to use). I have many party and entertaining books, and this one is definitely my favorite. I love it.
A must have.......2005-12-01
Perfect. Everything I was looking for and plenty moore. Very helpful and easy to follow. Thanks InStyle

If you Google Nell Hill's, more than 47,000 hits come up. Mary Carol Garrity's three stores, Nell Hill's, Garrity's Encore, and G. Diebolt's, in the small town of Atchison, Kans., have become landmarks in the decorating world. Over 75,000 people annually travel an average of 90 miles in search of the special, unpredictable merchandise that Mary Carol chooses. Mary Carol tries to guarantee that their trips are worthwhile by personally providing them with inspiration on how to improve their homes and decor. This book is the culmination of her many years of experience both selling tabletop and listening to her customers most-often-asked questions about entertaining.
Nell Hill's Entertaining in Style is organized around the changing seasons and the holidays and celebrations that go with them. Nell Hill's is renowned for its tabletop medleys, and the book shows you how you can create similar effects. It gives readers Mary Carol's tips and tricks for breaking each step down into a manageable plan.
The book is filled with spectacular photography of the celebrations in Mary Carol's 130-year-old home as well as in the homes and gardens of her friends.
Customer Reviews:
One of many of Nell Hill's decorating books..........2007-07-03
I found this book to have some good things and some so-so things about it.
First, the so-so things about it: I wish there had been more home decorating samples (examples). Only a few homes were the focus. Although the homes were gorgeous, and the china settings and decorations were VERY pretty, I wish there had been more ideas shown under each Season!
Second, please note that this is not a cookbook. The author does state this fact in the book. The very few recipes shown are not that inspiring and very basic. So please note that this is not a cookbook.
Now about the good things about this book: The photos are stupendous! I own other NELL HILL decorating books and the photos are always the very best! Also, the homes showcased are very pretty (ie: romantic like homes) , as were the china settings and glassware and flowers.
Uninspiring.......2007-03-04
I found the clunky prose so irritating that any small pleasure I may have taken in this book rapidly disappeared.
According to the author, houses are always homes (and lovely homes, at that), food is invariably fare and home cooks are described as chefs. Even worse, after writing that she welcomes Spring into her house with seasonal bouquets, Ms Garrity informs her readers that, as she doesn't have a yard full of spring flowers, she relies on artificial (and can hardly tell the difference between faux and real). Hasn't she heard of florists? Doesn't the woman possess a sense of smell? Are fake branches really superior because they don't shed leaves all over the floor?
It was also a disappointment to see food mentioned as an afterthought and with far too much emphasis on buying, rather than preparing, a meal for friends. Part of the joy of entertaining (on a small scale at least) is serving food you've made yourself....not necessarily every dish but at least one course.
There were a couple of interesting ideas but, in the main, I found the tables to be uninspired and overdressed......you'd need a search party to locate the food. Serves me right for buying this book sight unseen - there's nothing here which would keep the divine Carolyne Roehm up at night.
Nell Hill's Entertaining in Style: Inspiring Parties and Seasonal Celebrations.......2007-01-11
Another wonderful, inspiring, and beautiful book by Mary Carol Garrity. Now you must visit her in Atchison, KS. What a treat!
The Best of the Nell Hill's books.......2006-11-02
This latest Nell Hill's book blew me away and I loved the other three. In my opinion this is the best of the collection. The ideas are fresh and different and the photographs are amazing. In this book, the reader gets more specific information than in her other books. The other plus included in this book are the recipes. Check out the Cream of Red Potato and Rosemary Soup on page 83.
Least Favorite of 4 Nell Hill Books.......2006-10-06
I own all the Nell Hill books and this is by far and away my least favorite. The parties described in the book are not special - and the pictures are less than impressive. There is nothing new in this book - and the information presented is not specific enough. I wish the table settings were described in great detail. There are few fun things - the ideas of having a "sip and see" party to welcome a new infant is fun - but the decorations are not. The Nell Hill family of shops are terrific - but this book is a disappointment.

What am I missing?.......2007-06-28
I guess I didn't pay enough attention before I made this purchase. I read the positive reviews and since I like to entertain I ordered it. I found it very disappointing. It's an odd size paperback with smallish print. There are no photos, just some tiny abstract purple hors d'oeuvres, which cover most every half page.
I can't for the life of me understand why everyone is so enamored with this book. I wasn't interested in the ridiculous "gently themed" party ideas, (which uses props like ping pong balls and pink and blue marbles) but hopefully to find some great new appetizer or hors d'oeuvres. I was hoping for some clever quick shortcuts, or savvy entertaining tips. If I gave a cocktail party using these suggestions/recipes my friends would laugh me off the loft!
The suggestion that "Guests love hors d'oeuvres that they can "customize" to their own taste" leads to a recipe where you boil new potatoes and cut an X in the top. The idea is for guests to pinch the potato open so they can top it with crème fraiche or sea salt. That's it? In the Wine-Tasting Party menu they list Wine Crackers. Turns out you are to simply place bowls of oyster crackers throughout the room.
Honestly, I tried to find something new I would use to entertain my guests but I just didn't. If using Styrofoam coolers placed in your bathtub is the method you want to use for cooling champagne then this book is for you!!
Classy, easy, and fun.......2007-04-03
Want to host a fabulous cocktail party? This book will jump start anyone new to planning a cocktail party, and for those who are known for awesome entertaining, it will provide you with marvelous ideas to enhance your party repertoire. It is a must have for those of us who enjoy filling our homes with friends by hosting a stylish cocktail party.
Great book for those who like to throw parties.......2006-11-10
This book had a ton of great (and easy) recipes and tips on how to make entertaining easy for the host. We always have people over to our house and I'm always looking for new recipes that won't keep me in the kitchen. Also, it has lots of basic information on things like how much ice to buy, how to convert a single drink recipe into a pitcher and so on. The party ideas were kind of themey for my group but you can easily pick and choose what to use. I would recommend this book for anyone who loves entertaining.
Great tips!.......2006-07-22
Great tips in this book and quite a fun read! Some of the recipes were a little too involved for me, but still something to try when you are not rushed for time. A ton of ideas for working on things ahead of time so the day of the party will be stress free, but most involved freezing the food on cookie sheets until the party. I have a side-by-side fridge and cannot fit a cookie sheet. Such a shame because some of their ideas were quite appetizing!
I love this book!!.......2006-05-11
I have been awaiting entertainment help like this forever! The tips shared by the Purcell Sisters are priceless - modern, easy, and fun! Just reading the book makes me want to throw a party.
Everything is arranged in a way that is easy to follow. From styles of parties, appropriate food to match the theme, and drinks that are sure to captivate the guests (and imagine this: they even give you recipes to make pitchers of these drinks, NO THOUGHT PROCESS WHATSOEVER!).. they offer suggestions on how to get your guests mingling, even the shy ones - and how to create a fun or sexy atmosphere, depending on what you're looking for.
This book is the best! I'm so glad i found it.

Sound, Sensible, Straightforward Advice.......2001-05-02
The book is a WINNER and a welcome relief to a Neanderthal party giver such as myself. When I think what I put my son through two years ago for his high school graduation, I cringe inwardly and ask the heavens for forgiveness. But life is made for second chances and my daughter is graduating from high school in a couple of months (June 2001).
My communications with my strong-willed seventeen-year-old daughter can become, even with the best of intentions, an unfortunate "tug of war." By following the authors' advice in the section titled "Don't Forget the Guest of Honor," this book has already paid great dividends. Within fifteen minutes of asking my daughter the questions suggested by Ginger and Mary in this section, I had a clear and concise idea of the type and size of celebration she would enjoy and, miraculously, not a single frustrated word was said between us. My daughter seemed genuinely pleased with the thoughtfulness of my questions as well as some of my ideas. The fact that the questions and ideas came from "Graduation: Celebrate with Style!" shall remain my secret - I plan to take full credit for everything and bask in my daughter's good feelings. Using the SOUND, SENSIBLE, STRAIGHTFORWARD ADVICE given by Ginger and Mary in "Graduation: Celebrate with Style!" I am confident that my daughter's graduation celebration will be memorable and appreciated by the guest of honor
One warning to readers - do not read the book before going to bed. I got so excited thinking of ideas for my daughter's graduation celebration that I had a hard time falling asleep.
Graduation: Celebrate with Style!.......2000-03-01
This book gave me lots of great ideas! I'm actually excited about planning my party now, instead of being anxious. It answered lots of questions in an easy-to-read format. Thanks, Mary & Ginger!

A bit disappointing.......2007-02-20
I bought this book along with Klutz Paper Fashions, but this one pales in comparison.
There are not very many templates, and no instructions to modify them.
I wouldn't bother with this book or its sisters, and just go straight for the [...]book. It really provides everything you need.

Can't find the book.......2000-09-07
Even though I have rated this book, I have never read it. Why? Well its for the simple fact that I can't find it anywhere. I know that it is out of print but I need it for a class and also for the fact that I want it . Iv heard so many interesting things about The dinner Party. I hope to share this not just with my classmates but with my mom and in the far, far future when I decide to have kids, I would like to share it with my little girl. so hopefuly whom ever reads my review (so to speak) it will be listened to and the people who need the book will have it as well and the people who want it.
A Must-Have for Women and for Men Who Appreciate Them.......1999-07-19
A triumph! A long-awaited celebration of truth about all womankind! A must-have for all women. and for men who truly appreciate their worth! Every female in the world should read this book cover-to cover and rejoice. A rare and beautiful work of art--second only to The Dinner Party exhibit itself. I am going to give this book to my daughter, friends of varying ethnic backgrounds, and several lesbian friends. How often do you find a book that speaks to the entire human race about the valuable contributions of the so-called "weaker sex"? Now we must all work to get The Dinner Party exhibit traveling, as it was originally intended to do, so that we can all personally stand in awe at this altar to all Eve's daughters!
Wonderful.......1999-06-21
What could be more thrilling than a genius like Judy Chicago as she challenges assumptions and traditions with her own brilliant and harrowingly moving depiction of Womyn's struggles. Truly enthralling, and, as another reviewer noted, a threat to the white male agendas of patriarchy. Give this book to all your friends!
Powerful and Empowering.......1998-04-09
"Dinner Party" is one of the all-time great works of feminist art, and although it proved too threatening to males, especially the white males of congress, it is art which MUST be witnessed by all young women. I applaud the other reviewers who have distributed this great book to other women.
A Must Have!.......1998-03-08
'The Dinner Party' is notable - not only for its beautiful art - but also for its amazing synopsis of women in history. If you are looking for a summary of the multitude of contributions by women, GET THE BOOK. The art is beautiful, stiking, and magical, the text is equally compelling. Especially recommended for art history, women's studies, etc
Book Description
"Outstanding.... Ends with some first rate insights.... Included is the best VU discography, bootlegs and all, ever published." Magnet)
The Velvet Underground, among the most influential bands of all time, are credited with creating a streetwise, pre-punk sensibility that has become inseparable from the popular image of downtown New York. "Discovered" by Andy Warhol in 1966, the VU-with their original line-up of Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Mo Tucker- would soon become the house band of the avantgarde, composing songs simultaneously furious in their abrasiveness and beautiful in their pathos, standing in striking contrast to the prevailing flower power of the era.
All Yesterdays' Parties gathers for the first time almost all of the published writings contemporary with the band's existence-from sources as mainstream as the New York Times to vanished voices of the counterculture like Oz, Fusion, and Crawdaddy! The book is a revealing snapshot of an era by trailblazing rock writers such as Lester Bangs, Robert Greenfield, and Paul Williams. With photographs, posters, and other visual evocations of the period throughout, All Yesterdays' Parties is an invaluable resource, a trove of lore for anyone interested in the VU, their roots, and legacy.
Customer Reviews:
It is what it says it is!.......2005-10-02
I felt compelled to write this review after reading some of the negative reviews about this compilation. There are better books on the Velvets available (e.g., Uptight!), yet this volume is indispensable to anyone seriously interested in the Velvets and how they were perceived by their contemporaries. They are now, and forever will be, well known as cutting-edge, avant-garde artists who helped shape a unique sound in the rock and roll arena. But when the Velvets first hit the scene, not everyone "got it." And that is what this book documents. This is an exhaustive reprint of almost all the known writings about the VU, in chronological order, from '65 - '71. Peppered throughout are photos of concert posters, press releases, etc., as well as a well-researched discography of all known songs from the period (though such lists are always subject to debate among fanatics), and a handy index. Heylin is a fantastic writer, particularly his stuff on Dylan and Reed/Velvets. He plays the role as the editor of this book -- not the author -- and in this role contributes an interesting and enjoyable introduction. If you are looking for the definitive biography of the band, check out Uptight! If you already know and love the Velvets, check out this volume and see what the press were saying about them at the time. It's amazing what time does to perceptions.

all yesterday's papers _ clinton heylin
what more can be said about the velvet underground, that has not been already been written? Well, since my own point of view, very little or nothing, unless lou, john or mo decide to publish their own memoirs on the matter, which seems quite improbable. So meanwhile, here comes clinton heylin & decides to recompile most of what was written about them during their heydays. Long before they became a myth, at a time when they really stood for what they were, a simple n.y. city rock & roll band. So take a trip in time, be able to read & try to feel how it was first time around, when the velvet underground were pushing boundaries that most of the today bands have their backs to.
By clinton heylin i strongly recommend -bootleg! the rise & fall of the secret industry & from the velvets to the void-oids (the book that inspired please kill me)

Instead of giving a book a bad rating because you can't figure out what it is BY THE TITLE, why don't you just not post?
This isn't a biography, it is a bunch of clippings written about TVU when they were still around, making music.
Is it flawless? No. But fans will dig it.
That's all there is to it ... check it out, fans!
All Yesterdays PArty.......2005-08-02

Book Description
Despite the abundance of lifestyle books on the market, none meet the entertaining needs of busy young adults. Many have both financial and personal independence, and along with this come the expectation to maintain, decorate, and entertain - all of the things their parents did - with far less time. It’s Just a Dinner Party simplifies and demystifies the art of throwing a dinner party and debunks the impossible standard and craft-focus aesthetic set by Martha Stewart and other style mavens. These twenty-something professional reveal straightforward and simple techniques for party planning, relaxed etiquette, bar and menu basics, and even a few reliable recipes for any occasion. Additionally, this book is uniquely couple-focused, rather than homemaker-focused; its essence is a "guest-centric" approach that stresses simplicity, grace, and a refreshingly genuine hospitality. Includes recipes for dining and cocktail, easy and elegant table settings, invitations, and entertainment tips.
Customer Reviews:
It's just insulting!.......2004-07-20
I am rating this book a 0. The book is a complete waste of ink (and film - the photos appears to have been taken by an elementary school graduate of photography). It's written by a couple of unsophisticated authors who really don't know how to throw a party, but pretend they do. Every sentence is an insult and the tone of the book is haughty, obnoxious, and goofy. How many times do I need to reminded to throw out the thrash after the party? Or better yet, on some pages, before the party??? Next time I decide to waste money on a book, it will on a Martha Stewart publication sans insults and corny jokes.
I would give this book to an enemy just to torture them.
written by Captain Obvious.......2004-07-19
Who are these people, and why do they think they have something to teach me about style?? Other than stating the obvious about entertaining, this is basically a book about how fabulous these unsophisticated people think they are. The material would have been more appropriate for their personal webpage than a book people pay good money for. And apparently they were personally slighted by Martha at some point!
Unsophisticated and annoying!.......2003-05-12
The authors mistakenly believe the reader would be interested in ad nauseum details of their personal partying! Nothing new or inspired in this tiny book.
Simple, Encouraging and Likeable.......2002-05-03
I like this book very much.
I find its message of relaxing and enjoying entertaining while treating your guests well to be encouraging, positive, and hard to find fault with.
The basics covered are helpful and while sure, some is just common sense, I know far too many people who let common sense fly directly out the window when it comes to entertaining! (Honestly, I can't count how many invitations I've received that are missing vital information or have vague dress instructions... Or how many times I've had to introduce myself to other guests, or witnessed hosts panic over spilled red wine...) -- Basic, common sense advice may seem pedantic or even unnecessary to some, but I think common sense never goes out of style and is perfectly appropriate in this type of primer.
I found the writing style pleasant and encouraging and like the simple photos mostly of people (although the paper quality is fairly low so the photos look a little grainy ....
On the whole, I appreciate this book, the basics it covers and its encouraging, refreshing message. It's especially ideal for anyone nervous about or new to entertaining. This book shares the basics of entertaining while encouraging readers to have fun, be kind and embrace their own personal style.
A GREAT BASIC BOOK ON ENTERTAINING.......2002-05-02
I just bought this great, little book and I LOVE it! It is a great starter book for people who are uncomfortable about entertaining in their own homes/apartments. Obviously, this is not for the experienced entertainer.
The recipes are super and easy to make. Again, they are great for the beginning cook. Easy to follow and with simple instructions - just the thing for a bridal shower gift.
The authors make the tone of the book light, happy and a pleasant experience - just as they want your dinner party to be. I feel that it is a good primer for anyone who is unsure about giving a party - dinner, cocktails, outdoor...whatever.
The jokes are just that ... jokes. With such a light hand, they make the prep, actual giving and clean up into an easy job. The central idea - GUESTCENTRIC entertaining - is one that everyone needs to keep in mind. I love that concept - that your guests are coming to your house to enjoy your company and are not going to judge you by your food prep, centerpiece or decor! That's what friends are for. Think about it - if your guests are going to judge you - then perhaps you need new friends!
Those readers who are interested in a book that will supply BASIC information on entertaining in humorous language and easy to read/follow format will find that this is a little gem and easily worth the price!
