Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Modern computer architectures designed with high-performance microprocessors offer tremendous potential gains in performance over previous designs. Yet their very complexity makes it increasingly difficult to produce efficient code and to realize their full potential. This landmark text from two leaders in the field focuses on the pivotal role that compilers can play in addressing this critical issue.

The basis for all the methods presented in this book is data dependence, a fundamental compiler analysis tool for optimizing programs on high-performance microprocessors and parallel architectures. It enables compiler designers to write compilers that automatically transform simple, sequential programs into forms that can exploit special features of these modern architectures.

The text provides a broad introduction to data dependence, to the many transformation strategies it supports, and to its applications to important optimization problems such as parallelization, compiler memory hierarchy management, and instruction scheduling. The authors demonstrate the importance and wide applicability of dependence-based compiler optimizations and give the compiler writer the basics needed to understand and implement them. They also offer cookbook explanations for transforming applications by hand to computational scientists and engineers who are driven to obtain the best possible performance of their complex applications.

The approaches presented are based on research conducted over the past two decades, emphasizing the strategies implemented in research prototypes at Rice University and in several associated commercial systems. Randy Allen and Ken Kennedy have provided an indispensable resource for researchers, practicing professionals, and graduate students engaged in designing and optimizing compilers for modern computer architectures.

* Offers a guide to the simple, practical algorithms and approaches that are most effective in real-world, high-performance microprocessor and parallel systems.
* Demonstrates each transformation in worked examples.
* Examines how two case study compilers implement the theories and practices described in each chapter.
* Presents the most complete treatment of memory hierarchy issues of any compiler text.
* Illustrates ordering relationships with dependence graphs throughout the book.
* Applies the techniques to a variety of languages, including Fortran 77, C, hardware definition languages, Fortran 90, and High Performance Fortran.
* Provides extensive references to the most sophisticated algorithms known in research.

5 out of 5 stars Must-have for compiler writers and processor designers.......2007-01-15

Allen and Kennedy (A&K) haven't written your first compiler book. There's nothing about syntax analysis, code generation, instruction scheduling, or intermediate representations. You already know all that part, or you won't get very far in this book. Once you have the basics down, A&K is an irreplaceable reference.

It centers heavily on Fortran - even today, a mainstay of scientific computing and an active area of language development. Today, just as 50 years ago, the language's straightforward structure makes detailed behavioral analysis relatively easy. That's especially true in handling the array computations that soak up so many dozens (as of this writing) of CPU-hours per second on todays largest machines. There's far too much to summarize here, but A&K cover a huge range of processor features, including caches, multiple ALUs, vector units, chaining, and more. C code gets some attention as well, much needed because of the cultural weirdness around array handling in C. In every case, the focus is on the real-world kernels that need the help and on explicit ways of identifying and manipulating those code structures. As a result, the authors disregard the unreal situations that sometimes arise, e.g. in
"while (--n) *a++ = *b++ * *c++;"
Yes, the arrays pointed to by a, b, and c can overlap. But the pointer a can also point to a, b, c, or n, somewhere in its range - and likewise for pointers b and c, or all three. There is essentially no limit to how bad this can get, e.g when n is an alias for a, b, or c. Yes these are rare situations and generally errors - but I've seen on-the-fly code generation in production environments, so even the A&K example isn't as bad as it gets. I admit these to be pathological cases, though, better suited to an 'Obfuscated C' contest than to a compiler textbook.

The real disappointment comes from the section on compilation for Verilog and VHDL, and that disappointment may be a matter of emphasis only. The authors focus heavily on the strangeness of four-valued bits, which exist in Verilog and VHDL simulation, but not in synthesis. I.e., not in what really matters to a deployed application. The real challenge lies in compilation of C or Fortran into gates, a topic that the authors barely skim. That, however, is still a field of research exotica. It should be mentioned in a general book on compilation, as it is here, but awaits a text of its own.

All you processor designers out there should read the title a little differently. You should read this as "Modern Architectures for Optimizing Compilers," but you probably worked that out for yourself. If you have the luxury to define your own memory structure, all that analysis of memory access will give you plenty of ideas for your next ASIP. It will certainly give you lots of ways to quantify the behavior of your target applications, so you'll know just how to get the most MIPS per Mgate, including hard limits on how much hardware paralellism can actually do you any good.

All architects of performance computing systems, hardware or software, need this book. Even application developers can learn better ways to cooperate with the compilers and tools that run their codes. It has my very highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Very readable, very specific.......2005-08-11

This book is a very thorough look through all the ways you can extract and use parallelism and data dependencies advantageously in an optimized compiler, depending on your target architecture. As one example, this book contains every imaginable way to deal with arrays and loops and the maddeningly complex data dependancies that can result from their various interminglings. The book is refreshingly easy to read and contains pseudo-code and step-by-step examples everywhere you'd want to see them.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book on loop based optimization.......2003-04-14

Randy Allen and Ken Kennedy are famous for their contributions
to compiler design theory. This book is a clearly written
discussion of the issues involving loop optimization and
dependence analysis. While this book also covers scalar
optimization issues, it is naturally complemented by Steven
S. Muchnick's excellent book "Advanced Compiler Design and
Implementation".

Randy Allen has spent many years implementing a variety of
compilers for supercomputers and hardware design languages.
While Ken Kennedy has published seminal theoretical work on
compiler optimization, he has also been involved in hands on
implementation as well. The experience of these two authors
results in a book which covers the huge body of knowledge in
compiler optimization and provides this knowledge in a
practical form that can be used by software engineers working
on compiler design.

For anyone working on modern compilers that require sophisticated
optimization features, this is an important reference work.
As with Muchnick's book, I have owned this since it was first
published. Rereading it reminds me of what a gem this work is.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, everything in one place........2003-02-05

As a researcher in the field, this book was immediately useful to me. Nearly every source code transformation and optimization technique that I'm aware of is present in this book, which often saves sifting through stacks of papers or looking for an elusive reference. If you're looking for a book to teach you the basics of how compilers work, it certainly is not the appropriate place to begin, but if you already have one good book on that then this book will make an excellent companion to it. It was slightly annoying that the book comes with two loose pages, one errata list and another to tape over a page early in the book, but that's what you get with 1st editions. Overall it's very good and the errors are very minor typos as opposed to factual goofs.

Book Description

Advances in semiconductor technology continue to increase the power and complexity of digital systems. To design such systems requires a strong knowledge of Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), as well as the CAD tools required. Hardware Description Language (HDL) is an essential CAD tool that offers designers an efficient way for implementing and synthesizing the design on a chip. HDL Programming Fundamentals: VHDL and Verilog teaches students the essentials of HDL and the functionality of the digital components of a system. Unlike other texts, this book covers both IEEE standardized HDL languages: VHDL and Verilog. Both of these languages are widely used in industry and academia and have similar logic, but are different in style and syntax. By learning both languages students will be able to adapt to either one, or implement mixed language environments, which are gaining momentum as they combine the best features of the two languages in the same project. The text starts with the basic concepts of HDL, and covers the key topics such as data flow modeling, behavioral modeling, gate-level modeling, and advanced programming. Several comprehensive projects are included to show HDL in practical application, including examples of digital logic design, computer architecture, modern bioengineering, and simulation.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good bilingual introduction.......2007-08-06

Since this is one of the very few bilingual HDL textbooks, I have adopted it for my graduate-level introductory HDL-based design class. The author has been extremely cordial and helpful in handling my questions and comments via email, and I really like the book's extensive use of examples. My biggest gripes are the failure to embrace several Verilog 2001 constructs and the lack of test bench discussion. (I always start my class with a simple test bench example, to show the students how to get up-and-running with HDLs. They are then strongly encouraged to test all of their homework or term project designs with extensive test benches.) I need to supplement the book's discussions of logic synthesis and design verification, but it is a readable, accessible text for the novice or for anyone who knows one HDL and wishes to learn the rudiments of the other one.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference for translating vhdl to verilog or vice versa........2007-04-10

I expect that this is the only book in print with vhdl-93 and verilog-95 examples side by side. For this reason it is a good reference for anyone knowing vhdl or verilog and wishing to quickly learn the other language for synthesis. Appendix B is a good cross reference for the two description languages.

This book does not cover HDL simulation and there are no testbench examples. The synthesis coverage of both languages is shallow. However for a designer who already knows one language and needs to learn the other, this book is an good value. I would also suggest that the word "Programming" be stricken from the title in the next edition, because this is not what hardware description is about.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't go far enough in depth, not organized well.......2007-04-04

I bought this book to learn verilog, pretty much because it had decent reviews and it's fairly cheap compared to other Verilog books. Well, you get what you pay for. Although I admire the author's attempts to try and cover both HDL languages, I had 2 major problems with the book:

1. It doesn't go in depth enough - This book would have been fine totally dedicated to either Verilog or VHDL, but it tries to cover both and doesn't cover the advanced details a professional or advanced grad student would need. It is a good primer for undergrads at best.

2. Minor flaw, but I didn't like how the book is organized. Like I said in point #1, if the book was either Verilog or VHDL it may have been sufficient. The author organizes the book so that a topic is covered for Verilog, then VHDL...then the next topic is covered in Verilog and then VHDL. I would have preferred if the first half of the book covered verilog, then the second half covered VHDL. If somebody is trying to learn Verilog like myself, I don't have to read a chapter, skip the next chapter, then read the next chapter...and so on and so forth.

5 out of 5 stars The master teacher of HDL fundamentals.......2006-03-18

Nazeih M. Botros' HDL PROGRAMMING FUNDAMENTALS: VHDL AND VERILOG includes a cd of code for all the full programs from the book plus detailed in-depth descriptions of ASIC and FPGAs, as well as an overview of CAD tools. HDL is a CAD tool which offers designers a more efficient way for synthesizing chip designs, and this book is the master teacher of HDL fundamentals, covering both IEEE standardized languages VHDL and Verilog. Highly recommended for advanced students.

5 out of 5 stars Automating Integrated Circuit Design.......2006-01-13

The design of semiconductors has become highly automated as the devices have gotten so complex that designing them by manual means is all but impossible. To assist in the design, the Hardware Definition Language (HDL)and the Very High-Speed Integrated Circuit (VHSIC) Hardware Definition Language (VHDL) were developed. They have become critical tools that the circuit designer must know and understand.

This book is intended to give the undergraduate student a solid background in the use of the software and it's place in the design phase for integrated circuits. It is suitable for any hardware oriented student in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science where an emphasis on integrated circuit design is present. The book presumes no particular background, but some understanding of basic logic and modern algebra will be a help.

A CD included with the book that contains all the examples, code samples and figures.

I was able to find much better (and much less expensive) resources online. Trust me, there's no topic this book covers that you can't find for free on the Internet. Don't waste your money. Just because someone's from Princeton doesn't mean they know how to write a book.

3 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2005-08-17

I was really disappointed with this book. It does not explain enough FPGA programming to get started, and spends much time covering topics that are probably of interest to people who already know how to use an FPGA and want to use it better. However, as far as I can tell about this, it seems to be an excellent complement to an introduction to FPGAs design. The inner workings of the system are explained in depth and very clearly.

2 out of 5 stars Beginner book.......2005-03-09

A entry level book, with too much time spent on VLSI issues, with a lot of large screenshoots & large pictures just to fill in the space.

The mentioned "A start-to-finish DSP case study addressing a wide range of design problems" which made me buy the book is a joke. It's hardly a advanceed DSP unit, more a Harward architecture CPU which implements 5 or 6 instructions and no advanced functionality and design issues which might arise in a complex design.

You can find much better synthethiable cores free on internet to learn from them. Save your money if you are anything but a beginer in FPGA.

This contemporary text by Wayne Wolf is an excellent work. For an EE or CS looking for just one book to own on FPGA design and reconfigurable computing, this is it.

3 out of 5 stars Drowning in "Waterfall".......2005-11-05

A detailed and well-supported essay on the the "waterfall" method of software development. The author defines a wicked problem and then explains the various leaks in the waterfall method for most software projects. Documented variations are then explained in detail and how they attempt to plug the leaks. Most of these include either spiral, prototyping, iterative, or incremental techniques to enhance one or several of the "classical" steps in the waterfall approach.

Finally several other methods of software development are discussed such as: "video / hollywood", "clean room", "scrum", and "sashimi". Overall the writing style was fluid and very easy to read however the content is somewhat dated when compared to the newer texts on agile methodologies. If you are committed to using the waterfall method or a variant then this book provides sound advice and good references.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked Problems, Righteous Solutions - Now I understand!.......2005-09-24

As a software engineer, our profession is often faced with tackling business problems that are unique and do not fit with a particular way to solve the problem. This book points out that very point and explores the solution domain for these problems. Supposedly in software development, we can take any problem, apply the waterfall lifecycle and live happily ever after. Well, as we all know, the waterfall often gives us problems in particular application domains. Great book.

2 out of 5 stars Antiqued.......2002-04-01

I think this book has a point that another book doesn't have. But, simply put, I feel difficult to understand the point.

Unfortunately, this book is too old. The examples that the authors show seems rather unfamiliar for me. I don't know about COBOL or Fortran. As well, I don't know theories or situations at that time when the book was published. Hence, I don't understand those and those problems.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for software.......2000-11-29

The idea that many situations have overlapping problem & solution domains is immensely valuable. Using some of the ideas in other situations, especially with young people, has generated better solutions than I ever imagined possible.

Give a copy to your favorite school teacher or city government official -- with the obvious caveat of course.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of software development methods.......2000-08-09

This is an excellent overview of what software development processes folks are using, and how they are similar to or different from each other. It has pointers to additional information on each method. Now I can easily recognize what method or partial methods a project is using, and better predict what its weak points are going to be. I only wish I had read this book first.

Authors, please publish an updated version including more recent methods like extreme programming!

2 out of 5 stars ASM and Verilog is a bad mix........2006-12-30

The author obviously is trying to force Verilog and ASM notation into the same book. The result is the implicit use of Verilog states which in effect results in unmanagable Verilog spaghetti code. Having a background in both hardware design and software consulting the Verilog code in the book is terrible. It can be compared to a jumble of assembly language without any comments of structure - sure, if you know the background of the design (i.e. the ASM charts) you might see why the code might work but the Verilog code by itself is not readable!

If you do some research you'll quickly see that ASM charts are not widely used these days. Most engineers in the industry are using well defined moore state machines because they are easy to understand and maps very well to case statements in Verilog.

I will now skim through the rest of the book to see if there might be some content NOT related to ASM charts that might be worth picking up...

5 out of 5 stars Gets you off to a running start.......2003-12-31

I got this book as a quick tutorial on the Verilog language. After just a day or two with this book and a compiler to play with, I had the level of skill that I wanted. The Verilog language description is just one chapter in this book, though, and not even the longest one.

This is lots more than just a language book. It also shows a higher level of design than most students see in their first few logic courses. The example developed in the book's later sections works up to a supersclar ARM processor core! This book is not about hooking up a few gates and latches. It actually starts to address problems of practical size and complexity. Big problems really are different from small ones, and I was very happy to see techniques for the larger systems.

That said, beginning logic designers may find the book frustrating. It works at a high conceptual level and fast pace. The author assumes that the reader already has good command of the basics of boolean logic, synchronous design, and computer architecture.

Initially, I just wanted a competent language description. I got that, plus some worthwhile design technique. Best of all, I did not have to sit through yet another lesson in the baby steps of logic design.

5 out of 5 stars enlightening!.......2001-11-08

this book is an insightful and exciting introduction to hardware
design, especially to those like me with a software background.
the author illuminates the difference between hardware and
software specification, and demonstrates how his "implicit"
(RTL) approach works well for (synthesis of) pipelined CPU designs.
the only deficit is that some of the free tools listed in the
appendix are no longer available.

3 out of 5 stars Not a great first book on Verilog.......2001-09-22

Although the book does cover most of the basics in Verilog, its terrible organization of Verilog topics renders the book almost useless as a good reference to the Verilog language. Stick with Palnitkar's book for this purpose. As far as I have seen the author's implicit style of Verilog code is not recommended in the industry, nor could I find any compelling reason why it should be. The author's use of ASMs is very good and a useful tool when mastered. The information regarding computer design is solid but having a copy of the classics by Hennessy and Patterson nearby is always useful. I would recommend this book to the Verilog designer that is interested in computer design but not as a first book on either topic.

    Book Description

Noble Dreams, Wicked Pleasures explores complex American attitudes toward the Near East--as revealed in collected paintings, interior design, and multiple vernacular forms--at the formative moment of industrialization and the crystallization of a truly mass culture. Published to coincide with the multimedia exhibition that opens at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute and travels to the Walters Art Gallery and the Mint Museum of Art, this catalogue considers how urban, mercantile, Protestant America represented the Islamic world of the Middle East and North Africa in ways that say more about itself than the foreign culture.

This gorgeously illustrated volume first looks at the use of Orientalist stereotypes by some of the country's most important high art painters of the nineteenth century: Frederic Edwin Church's treatment of the exotic terrain through a lens of deep religiosity; a more cosmopolitan reading of the harem girl by John Singer Sargent; the perfumed alternative to industrial capitalism conjured in the landscapes and market scenes of Samuel Colman and Louis Comfort Tiffany; and interpretations of the Orient as emancipatory by Ella Pell, the only major woman Orientalist. The book next traces the popularization of Orientalism in the decorative arts (including a few treasures from Olana, Church's Moorish-style home on the Hudson), on Broadway, and in Hollywood, as well as through advertising that linked consumer products with visual suggestions of exotic sexuality and through cultural objects, such as the Shriners' fez.

The generous color plates show both an innocent romanticization of the Orient and a darker, heavily eroticized version of Oriental "otherness." An excellent chronology and bibliography, in addition to expert essays by both Americanists and Islamicists, give context to absorbing images. Though a perfect companion for visitors to the exhibition, Noble Dreams, Wicked Pleasures is also for anyone seeking an uncommon take on the development of American self-understanding.

5 out of 5 stars An Architectural Classic.......2004-02-07

I discovered this book in architectural school, and was intrigued at the way Zevi clarified everything I was then dealing with in vague ways in architectural school. The invariables, or "anti-rules", as Zevi calls them, are each given seperate chapters in this book. Listing of Functions, Asymmetry and Dissonance, Antiperspective Three Dimensionality, Four-Dimensional Decomposition, Cantilever, Shell and Membrane Structures, Space-in Time and Reintegration of Building, City and Landscape are all ideas present to varying degrees in various buildings at various times in history. Zevi shows how they can be used in a more deliberate and integrated fashion, no matter what the budget or funtion of any given building. He illuminates how these ideas are present in the architecture of times historical and times more recent, and underscores the value of non-conformist buildings for the enrichment of society.
This book gave me a tremendous creative boost at just the right time in my life and it's influence continues in my work. Marvellously illustrated with three-dimensional drawings and with photos, it presents a summation of the thinking of a great and scholarly mind.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, someone challenges the normalities of Architecture........2000-05-25

This book is by far one of the best books I have read in a while. It is simple and to the point and Zevi does not hold back. It is a little dated, but all of his seven principles are able to be directly applied to the current state of architecture. This should be a mandatory reading for all architecture students. His opinions of the tendencies within society to praise the priciples of Symmetry, proportion, and order, show how architecture has been plagued by standardization and repetitive forms throughout history. A great book for anyone who is troubled by the generality of architecture (with great exception to the current masters, no less)and would like to see the boundries broken.
