Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

The Gothic cathedral is one of humanity's greatest masterpieces--an architectural feast that couldn't help but attract the attention of renowned author-illustrator David Macaulay. Once an architectural student at the Rhode Island School of Design, Macaulay glories in the intricacies and beauty of structure, as evidenced in his masterful pen-and-ink drawings in critically acclaimed children's books such as Castle, Pyramid, and Rome Antics. He begins Cathedral in 1252, when the people of a fictitious French town named Chutreaux decide to build a cathedral after their existing church is struck by lightning. We first meet the craftspeople, then examine the tools, study their cathedral plans, and watch the laying of the foundation. Week by week we witness the construction of this glorious temple to God. Macaulay intuitively hones in on the details about which we are the most curious: How were those enormously high ceilings built and decorated? How were those 60-foot-high windows made and installed in the 13th century? And how did people haul those huge, heavy bells up into the skyscraper-high towers? Thanks to Macaulay's thorough, thoughtful tribute to the Gothic cathedral, not a stone, turret, or pane of stained glass is left unexamined or unexplained. (Ages 9 and older) --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Text and detailed drawings follow the planning and construction of a magnificent Gothic cathedral in the imaginary French town of Chutreaux during the thirteenth century.

5 out of 5 stars Macaulay's books.......2007-01-20

This book lives up to my expectations of David Macaulay's books in that it's very well drawn, has an abundant amount of useful information and is presented in a clear, exciting manner!

5 out of 5 stars Another Macaulay Masterpiece.......2006-11-23

Second only to his magnum opus, Castle, this 1981 book continues David Macaulay's tradition of creating intricate (but welcoming and friendly) illustrations as an accompaniment to the telling of his informative tales. Taking its place in a grand series that has included Pyramid, Mill, Castle, Unbuilding, and others, Cathedral details the design and creation of one of the great Gothic churches that came to exist across western Europe during the Age of Faith. The setting here is France during the intellectually-towering High Middle Ages, and in careful steps we come to understand firstly what motivated people to undertake a construction project on such a scale, secondly how the construction was carried out, and finally how a Gothic cathedral, truly a structure that seems to soar untethered to earth, is able to stand so proudly close to a millennium after its dedication. Most marvelously of all, unlike virtually every other Medieval building, the great worship places are still largely in use today, fulfilling their original purposes and continuing on as a tribute to and testimony of the genius of those who erected them. David Macaulay is a master and a treasure, and a book like his teaches without effort. Like all great things, his books are joys to re-visit over the course of a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent masterpiece!.......2006-02-01

Words are useless to describe this masterpiece created by David Macaulay.

I have visited France (more specifically Paris, Rheims, Chartres, Chambord, Versailles, Chenonceau) and went on a "cathedral pilgrimage" to see all the greatest French gothic cathedrals.

After picking up this book in my local library, I was spellbound by the beauty of Macaulay's drawings. Macaulay is able to recreate the majesticness and grandeur of the cathedrals and draws you into the cathedral. You can almost hear the cathedral choir singing in the backround and the quite chanting of the people.

Macaulay's drawings are first rate (no wonder this masterpiece won the Caldacot Medal!)

This book should be read by everyone to show what people can achieve through determination and having a united goal.

This just occurred to me.... why do man's most significant and most beautiful works of art and architecture result from their religion?

David Macaulay's book is pure gold! BUY THIS BOOK, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars spellbinding for children and adults alike.......2005-08-12

Like all of Macaulay's architectural books, CATHEDRAL is ripe with vivid illustrations that are both enthralling and educational to behold. The drawings not only illustrate the cathedral's method of construction, but convey the presence and majesty of the space as well. One feels the dizzying height of the tower and the formidable strength of the foundation stones. I was always amazed at the ingenuity of the laborers in completing tasks that I would have otherwise felt impossible to attemp without power tools.

While it is hard to predict whether today's children will find the book as captivating as I did in the pre-internet era, I feel that David Macaulay's books make excellent gifts to children. Not only do they stimulate the imagination, but they educate children on architecture, history and culture, and show that magnificent works can be accomplished through cooperation, creativity, planning and hard work. Not bad for a few bucks! I recommend you splurge on the hardback, because this is a book you'll enjoy literally for decades.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to architecture and the Middle Ages.......2004-01-10

Having just finished a great book called "Great Cathedrals", filled with 400 pages of jaw-dropping photographs, I kept wondering how in the world they could have built such marvelous edifices with rudimentary implements over 800 years ago. David Macaulay's "Cathedral" is a book ostensibly written for children but which will fascinate readers of all ages. In scarcely 80 pages, Macaulay takes us back in time to the year 1252 in the fictional French village of Chutreaux where the people decide to build the "longest, widest, highest and most beautiful cathedral in all of France" for the glory of God. Macaulay's text is minimal, but his exquisite black and white line drawings say it all: the step-by-step stages in the building's construction, the craftsmen and the tools they used, and the dedication that kept this project going for 80 years until its completion. We feel a sense of awe at the dedication of the original architects and craftsmen and builders who knew that they would be long dead before the cathedral was finally finished. Macaulay's glossary at the end of the book helps us to understand the major elements of the Gothic cathedral, and his cross-sections and diagrams provide clear illustration of just how the cathedral rose from its foundations. At the end of this volume, we share the awe and pride the townspeople felt at having shared a goal for over 80 years and making it a reality. Macaulay's "Cathedral" is a marvelous creation in more ways than one.

4 out of 5 stars Draw Buildings--Step-by-step.......2007-09-11

This is a wonderful and fun activity for someone who may be interested in trying to draw buildings and bridges. It was purchased as a gift.

4 out of 5 stars Good intro to drawing.......2007-05-21

My son took to this book right away. It gives good drawing directions, but what I like about it most is that it familiarizes him with some classic architecture and styles.

5 out of 5 stars That was Fun!.......2007-01-10

I bought this for my son who is still learning to draw and write. When it arrived, I grabbed our big Magnadoodle and started drawing these myself to see how they looked. It was great! I could easily draw these in just a couple of minutes.

If you have a budding artist who likes architecture, this is a good tool to getting started. Once the structure is drawn then they can embellish it with their own imagination!

5 out of 5 stars Draw 50 Buildings and Other Structures .......2006-03-23

Bought this book for my nephew who has always had an interest in building. At the age of three he was able to put any toy, plane or castle together without someone reading the instructions to him. I bought the book to see if he an interest in understanding the basics of constructing a building. He opened the book and within 60 minutes had drawn a bridge, a skyscraper and a castle. He has completed the entire book and his older sister is also using the book. I highly recommend this book to any adult interested in expanding a child's mind. He may never become an architect but he has developed areas of his brain that might help him solve a problem in other disciplines whether science, math, or art. Good book. I would like to use it also.

4 out of 5 stars For the Artist who has never tried Illustration.......2000-08-24

I'm a landscape and still life artist who needed to create an SF or Fantasy style building or city. I didn't want to take the time to learn drafting. This book is for the beginner or advanced artist who wants a step by step, how-to for drawing accurate structures easily in a few minutes.

No complicated perspective drawings. Quickly draw famous buildings from around the world.

This is a great book for children too. No complicted directions.

A simple guide for creating any type of building you desire. The author makes it simple in as little as 3 easy steps.

The translation of this fascinating book is as bad as any translation of any book translated from any language into English. It could easily be the product of a French high-school student, after two years of study of English, with the aid of an abridged dictionary. If there is another translation of it, look for that one: it could not be worse.

4 out of 5 stars An Easy Read.......2004-09-13

The fellow up above is being a bit severe. Gimple does go on a rant in a chapter at the end of the book saying things such as-America has reached its peak and will start to decline- and- France is on its way up-. Amazing statements considering he is French and this book was written in the seventies.
Obviously Mr. Gimpel should stick to writing about the past and stop predicting the future (He should have learned from Marx, but hey it was the seventies, the Soviet Union still looked like it would do more than kill a lot of people).
I found the book pleasant reading and it is a must read for an entry level History of Technology buff.
Gimple was one of the firsts in the field, so we must give him respect no matter how off some of his thought turned out to be.

5 out of 5 stars a fascinating and full meal on the gothic era.......2003-01-22

This is the best book I read on the mysterious movement known as the gothic era, which has long fascinated me. It is written by an independent scholar with a quirky, yet erudite, point of view who writes very well, with the Cartesian clarity that we expect of French intellectuals.

I found it absolutely fascinating, as he explained the politics that gave rise to the astonishing building projects that involved entire communities for centuries and whose artisans are, with the exception of Villard, wholly unkown. Gimpel then goes through the crytic notebook of Villard - the only true record of the era's methods besides the works themselves - deciphering it for non-specialists like myself. In his view, built during a late-medieval economic boom, the cathedrals used a new kind of geometry and practical experimentation that foreshadowed the discoveries of the Renaissance. Some would even argue that the gothic cathedral architects and builders presaged the scientific method that emerged during the Enlightenment. Gimpel provides plenty of fodder for that interpretation.

Warmly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars A political book!.......2001-11-25

If you are expecting a history of cathedral building, look elsewhere. This is slow and a bit dull, concentrates on extraneous issues ( the ego od Suger gets more coverage than St Denis itself), and even worse -- it's political. Yes, marxist-french anti-American screeds in a book on cathedrals. Oy.

5 out of 5 stars A lavishly illustrated story about inspiration, courage, and the wonder of seeing architectural beauty gradually take shape........2007-02-04

Written for the enjoyment of children ages 4-10, "Ambrose and the Cathedral Dream" is a wonderful picturebook about a small mouse with big dreams. Ambrose the mouse yearns to follow the traditions of his mouse family and help build a gorgeous cathedral, but his daydreams prevent him from practicing the somersaults that startle tired workers and help them stay awake. Ambrose's dream is no less than to help William the Master Builder find his dream. A lavishly illustrated story about inspiration, courage, and the wonder of seeing architectural beauty gradually take shape.

4 out of 5 stars You Gotta Love a Somersaulting Mouse.......2006-12-19

Author Margo Sorenson and illustrator Katalin Szegedi team up again to bring young audiences a second Ambrose-the-Mouse adventure. Like its predecessor "Ambrose and the Princess" this work is set in medieval times and provides a glimpse at the culture of the day. Ambrose and his cousins are the third generation of their family to perform somersaults to pep up the cathedral craftsmen when their energy flags. Ambrose tends to daydream instead of practice his somersaults, which results in clumsy performance and jeers from the male cousins, who end up praising Ambrose for discovering and meeting a challenge of his own. There is also a strong family message as we learn that Ambrose's grandfather was a somersaulting mouse who entertained the master builder of his day. And, wait, the current master builder's dream was that his own son would take an interest in building the cathedral. Which he did after seeing Ambrose turn a somersault! Readers and listeners from 4-10 will enjoy the simple story, history lesson, even the gargoyles, and the gorgeous illustrations.

    Book Description

Beautiful and imposing, cathedrals were designed as monuments to the greater glory of God. They are important not only for spiritual reasons, but for their often splendid architecture. A medievalist leads an extraordinary photographic tour through the most magnificent examples, from Notre Dame in Paris to the Cathedral of the Holy Family in Nairobi, Kenya. Through engaging commentary, the history and evolution of these buildings unfold, beginning in the early Christian era and Emperor Constantine's conversion to Christianity in the 4th century, up through the Reformation, and right into the 20th century. Among the most spectacular: in the ruins of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland; Manila Cathedral in the Philippines, rebuilt five times; and St. Patrick's in New York City.

5 out of 5 stars informative and well done.......2000-01-06

I bought this book because Professor Oggins was a favorite of mine at SUNY-Binghamton. I was certainly not let down by this book. The text is clear and concise. It is laid out into introductory chapters explaning the evolution of the cathedral and its place in the life of the population of the times. This is followed by chapters reviewing prominent cathedrals, grouped geographically. These descriptions note historic as well as contemporary items of interest, for example the English cathedrals damaged by the Nazi blitz. Very well written and easy to read. The photography is exceptional, with both external and internal views, along with items of architectural interest. All in all an asset to anyone interested in medieval history, cathedrals, architecture, or just a well written book with good pictures. A plus is the geographic maps and the internal floor plans supplied with some of the cathedral descriptions.

    Book Description

The great European cathedrals are the most conspicuous legacy of medieval times. But how were they commissioned, designed, and built? In this extensively illustrated volume, which includes photographs, architectural drawings, and pages from illuminated manuscripts, historian François Icher offers a lively, detailed account of the process by which these wondrous structures were erected.

This is THE book to read on cathedrals and I couldn't agree more with the previous reviewer. Lavish illustrations, detailed and in full color, appear on every page, along with incredible artwork and sketches from teh times. Side columns with primary source material offer first-hand accounts of what it was like to work on the site of such a grand project, and what impact they had on the surrounding communities. It's all here! From the origins of the bishop's throne (cathedra) to the culmination in the flying buttresses of Chatres, this is the story of Western Europe.

I would also highly recommend the VHS by David Macauly, "Cathedral", which is a charming documentary/story-telling of why cathedrals have held the imaginations of millions, from their inception to the present. It is especially great for kids, since it uses some high quality cartooning in parts that really capure the personal impact the churches had on those living during their construction.

Also, the DVD, "Chatres Cathedral: A Sacred Geometry" is a wonderful companion to any study of the meaning and methods of cathedral architecture. It is simply amazing how much of a mystical component is present in the plans.

    Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Building a Gothic library? Make room..........1999-06-05

When people discover I'm a veteran of the stone carving trade, they sometimes ask for the behind-the-scenes story. "Building the Great Cathedrals" tells it. The tools, the trades, the intrigues, the budget concerns, and the people are all present and accounted for; along with immersion into the dizzy, circus atmosphere of a cathedral construction site. If you wonder why so much passion was invested in completion - by those who would never live to see it - here's the answer. With hundreds of lush, full-color photos and medieval illuminations of the period. If you're building a personal collection of Gothic architecture books, make room.

    Book Description

It has been twenty-six years since the publication of CATHEDRAL. David Macaulay's first book, CATHEDRAL, introduced readers around the world to his unique gift for presenting architecture and technology in simple terms, and for demystifying even the most complex of concepts. CATHEDRAL received a Caldecott Honor Medal and is now considered a classic. BUILDING THE BOOK CATHEDRAL includes the content of CATHEDRAL in its entirety. Here Macaulay traces the evolution of his creative process in "building" that first book, from the initial concept to the finished drawings. He introduces the basic elements of structure and sequence and explains why one angle of a drawing may be better for conveying an idea than another. He describes how perspective, scale, and contrast can be used to connect a reader with concepts, and how placement of a picture on a page can make a difference in the way information is communicated. Building the Book Cathedral provides an opportunity to examine Macaulay's unique problem-solving skills as he looks back over two and a half decades at the book that launched his distinguished career.

5 out of 5 stars David Macaulay Craft.......2007-09-12

When David Macaulay published "Cathedral" in 1973 it was an instant classic of children's literate. It has sold thousands of copies, never been out of print and has been translated into numerous languages. Macaulay followed the success of "Cathederal" with a number of highly successful books that followed the life cycles of buildings. Macaulay's pen and ink books have developed quite a dedicated following over the years.

"Building the Book Cathedral" was published on the Twenty Fifth Anniversary of the release of "Cathederal". The purpose of this book was to explain the creative process that went into creating "Cathedral". Not only does the book have his intial sketches, more importantly it delves into his method of writing books. This book is a must for all fans of Macaulay's craft. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars A great book for the budding architect.......2000-11-04

My 5-year-old son is fascinated with cathedrals. He loves to look at the book I have on a local cathedral. He tries to draw them and build them with his Lego bricks. It is difficult to find a book on this subject that is geared toward his age level, so when I saw this coloring book, I knew I had to buy it. He absolutely loves it. I might have to buy several more of them. He'll have this one finished in no time.
