Great Tool for Teaching Art.......2007-03-10
This book is a great way to get kids to realize that yes they can draw. It really gives great techniques and excercises that teach the basic elements of shape.
Drawing out children.......2007-01-23
This book is amazing! It is perfect for children of all ages, as it talks about the drawing process, not just trail drawings.
It is perfect for the home school, or for kids whos school district does not have art any more.
It addresses the process of learning, and will help kids not only draw better, but do better in other subjects.
Drawing With Children.......2007-01-11
This is an absolutely wonderful book. I was one of those who "could not draw," and after reading the book through and doing all the exercises, I now can draw anything I want. It breaks drawing down into small manageable pieces (the five basic shapes), and once you learn to really "see" things, you are able to break drawing different items down that way. I have "taught" my grandchildren to draw using this book, and they look it.
Good book for teachers and parents!.......2006-10-07
This book is aimed toward parents and/or teachers. It gives good advice and a good drawing technique to learn in order to teach drawing/art to children. Not exactly a book for children, but a book that will help YOU teach children! :o) My boys have certainly enjoyed looking thru the book and the pictures, but the "meat" of this book is directed to the parent/teacher. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it, especially to parents/teachers who might be like me and not have great art skills or a background in drawing.
Excellent book.......2006-05-17
I highly recommend this book for all ages. The lessons were fun for my [...] and my [...]. These lessons teach the children that they can draw without frustration or failure.

Disappointed in Matisse Drawing with Scissors.......2006-08-12
Cute, but not as substantial as I would have liked.
Book Description
The current crisis in geography education has spawned several new books on mapmaking, many of which advocate either recitation and drill or a conceptual top-down model that ignores children's interests. Mapmaking with Children presents an inspired alternative. Maintaining that there is no substitute for hands-on experience, David Sobel places the initial emphasis on local projects--projects that begin in students' own backyards and communities, projects that provide a sense of place.
As Sobel explains, "In the beginning, children's maps represent their experiences of beauty, secrecy, adventure, and comfort. With these affective endeavors as a foundation, I then gradually start to focus on scale, location, direction, and geographic relationships. The development of emotional bonds and cognitive skills needs to go hand in hand in my approach to developmentally appropriate social studies and geography." To that end, his book identifies each stage of development, presenting relevant theoretical issues and several appropriate projects.
In the beginning, students stay close to home, mapping their known world. Gradually, they move on to their neighborhood, developing a sense of place, scope, and perspective. Eventually, once students are older, they explore the nation, the world, even the solar system, creating raised relief maps and contour maps to develop visual literacy and spatial reasoning skills. Vivid illustrations of the students' work are provided throughout to let you observe each stage of development.
Mapmaking, as Sobel uses it, has relevance across the curriculum. In addition to appealing to social studies teachers, this book will be of interest to science teachers, language arts teachers, and math teachers looking for new ways to invigorate the curriculum.

Mapmaking with Children Exactly What I Was Looking For.......2005-10-14
As a water educator for a local watershed organization, getting the idea of a watershed across to elementary school students can be challenging. This book focuses on kids developmental capacities and how they relate to a place at different ages. Not only perfect for classroom teachers, this book should be on the shelves of every environmental educator.
This is a gem of a book........2000-02-02
This is a wonderful, well-written book that will be of interest to a wide variety of people--most of whom will unfortunately probably not encounter it--such as parents and homeschoolers and child development professionals and environmental educators, as well as its (presumed by me) targeted audience of classroom teachers. It is the kind of work that uses one subject to explain much about the world, the way we think and use information. It is also a how-to manual on mapmaking with children. I came away from the book with a very clear understanding of several map projects I could do with my children. Because the book first lays the theoretical groundwork for children's understanding of maps, the actual map projects seem intuitive--experiential education at its finest. The author's passion for his subject, and his scholarship come through. There is much information and guidance on what sorts of maps are appropriate for children of different ages to be encouraged to create--from treasure hunts to classroom maps to sophisticated area maps. I am buying copies for my children's teachers!

Children's Drawings as Diagnostic Aids.......2005-12-14
This is an extremely expensive for what you get. The entire book took only an hour to read as most of it is illustration. I found the information to be outdated. Many of the theories have changed in the last 5 years. There is some "food for thought" but seemed mainly like common sense to me. I would check the local library prior to purchase.
good book--what there is of it.......2003-04-26
Although the book is almost 300 pages, most of it is full-page illustrations and white space. I learned only a little bit, but that was because it took only a few hours to read the book.
I would advise obtaining a copy through your local library or through interlibrary loan, but not spending too much money on buying a copy.
While you're at it, get 0876308337 and 0876300549.
Superior.......1998-12-06
If you view this writing as a catalyst to ponder using your own experiences to interpret, like an experienced counselor would do, and not approach the reading as an end-all resource, you will find correlations and new thoughts devloping a deeper insight into the minds and emotions of children
Full of opinion; diagnostically & theoretically, garbage........1997-09-04
DiLeo appears to have enjoyed writing this book. I wish I could say the same about reading it. In looking for a source to help in assessing children, I found this book diagnostically and theoretically, garbage

Customer Reviews:
lovely book.......2007-01-16
Wonderful Degas photos illustrate ballet beautifully, I wanted one of them for myself.
Excellent series.......2006-06-22
My daughter has enjoyed all of the books in this series since she was about a year old. They were the first baby board books we sought out by author after seeing how much she enjoyed the Matisse one. This one is her favorite lately; she loves to dance around the kitchen when we read it.
Excellent first art book.......2006-04-21
Fun story about dancing, illustrated by Degas classics. My near 3 yo daughter loves dance related stories and she simply adored this book on the first read, "pretty pictures daddy". A great way to introduce art to your child, I look forward to the other books.
Beautiful art book for kids.......2006-02-07
I have four of Julie Merberg's books and this one isn't a disappointment. Her books are fabulous introductions to art for little ones. The pictures in this book are beautiful Degas paintings. My daughter loves looking at the dancers and listening to the flowing text that goes with the pictures. All of Merberg's books are worth the price if you want to begin introducing art to your little one.
Great intro to art.......2005-08-24
Our 7 month old daughter loves the books in this series and gets very excited when we get ready to read them to her. I can only recommend these to anyone that wants to introduce their kids to art in a fun and exciting way. The poems that accompany each picture are fun and relate to each painting, which also helps expand their vocabulary.

Book Description
The remarkable story of Jonathan Lerman, a young artist with autism, seized the attention of the art world at the 2002 Outsider Art Fair. Coverage by The New York Times, The Today Show, 48 Hours, and other international media has brought him into millions of homes across the country. This selection of fifty drawings, with a text by critic Lyle Rexer, presents the full range and astonishing growth of Jonathan's extraordinary talent.
Diagnosed with autism and at first scarcely able to communicate, Jonathan began drawing at age ten. By age twelve, his drawings were exhibited in a solo exhibition at K. S. Art in New York. Working with the assurance of a Matisse, the speed of a Picasso, and the humor of a born cartoonist, Jonathan has created an unforgettable body of work. His drawings include portraits of actual figures as well as figures from his own imagination, all rendered with great acuity. These drawings overturn the stereotype of the so-called savant artist as an unchanging talent sprung to life fully formed. Instead, they detail the restless experimentation and rapid growth of an artistic sensibility.
Jonathan Lerman: The Drawings of a Boy with Autism is a book not just for art lovers but for everyone who values the rich diversity of the creative imagination. In addition to an illuminating essay on Jonathan's work, the book also contains an afterword by Caren Lerman, Jonathan's mother, describing the sudden appearance of his talent and the challenges and satisfactions of raising a gifted child with autism. 50 b/w illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
His drawings are his words!.......2003-01-10
This is a well done book! It gives an insight into what Jonathan is thinking or feeling at times, where words would leave anyone's midsts. Jonathan is a member of our community here in upstate New York and we are more than proud of him - he is the spokesperson for all the other children who are as affected by autism as he is. Jon's mom, Caren, is often the one parents turn to when they don't know who else to call. She and Jonathan are the pioneers in this area when it comes to dealing with the issues of autism. When Jonathan first started drawing, it was literally an view for the first time in what he was feeling, and I am proud to say that I was invited into his world through his drawings. Thank you Jonathan!

learning caligraphy.......2007-05-13
This was purchased for my teenage daughter who wanted to learn caligraphy to add verses onto her watercolor paintings. She has learned it takes a lot of practice. This is a very nice set with good supplies for someone who wants to learn caligraphy.
Pretty Nice for the Price.......2007-01-12
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my daughter who LOVES to write and draw all over EVERYTHING and it kept her occupied for hours. However, the ink does get all over the place if you aren't careful. She has enjoyed it alot and the price is good.
DECENT ENOUGH SERVICE.......2006-11-01
PRODUCT RECEIVED IN GREAT CONDITION. DELIVERY TIME NOT SO PERFECT, BUT GOOD PRODUCT.
Not all that it seems.......2006-08-30
The pen is rather cheap and the book only shows basic calligraphy. Good for kids to play with, but don't buy it for yourself.

This book is great fun for the drawing-challenged.......2004-03-05
I love this book and have borrowed it numerous times from the public library. I originally checked it out 2 years ago to learn how to make fun and amusing animal drawings for my then preschool-age son since I have little innate ability to draw. The book instructs you step-by-step through some stylized drawings of animals using simple letter and number shapes. Because you are combining familiar shapes there is the potential (with practice) to actually remember the steps. And, as it turned out, my son could draw some of the simpler animal designs himself, so we had fun using this book together. I recently tried to purchase this book and was disappointed to learn that the book is out of print.

Customer Reviews:
A great beginning for any age.......2005-07-21
While aimed at kids, this is a great place to start at any age. If you have been looking at other drawing books, and the books you have seen before only make it harder, your search is over. Mark makes it easy for anyone at any age to get basic drawing skills, the building blocks you need to get started. He teaches the skills that other books make seem complex, without the stress or making it go over your head. His way of teaching is simply the easiest method a person can have to start drawing. And if the books are good, his old show on PBS and his videos are even better. Mark makes drawing so fun kids beg to use the book again and again. He does not start by intimidating you with the completed project, in fact you don't always know what you are drawing until you are done. He takes you one line, circle, or square at a time and before you know it you have a fun drawing. I also reccommend you try the books from Ed Emberly, or check my lists on Amazon for kids that want to learn to draw, or be a cartoonist or animator.
Excellent drawing tutorial for kids and for kids-at-heart.......2002-12-20
I bought this book to relearn how to draw properly. While the book is directed at a young audience, adults-at-heart like me will benefit from the drawing principles such as foreshortening, placement, size, overlapping, shading and shadowing, contour and horizon (plus 1 and 2 point perspectives). My disappointments were that a few later lessons repeat previous lessons and that it uses blank pages after each lesson for you to practice on. I suggest you use a separate sheet of paper to do this so you can pass this book to your kids and their kids and so on and so forth. Despite these, I still rate it 5 stars.
I can now draw simple everyday objects both as cartoons and as realistically as I can. They're not professional quality yet, the book recommends daily practice until they are and that's exactly what I'm doing.
This isn't the only book you should buy though if you want to draw artistically. In my case, I'd like to draw comics-style characters and objects so I can move on to animating them later. I got Tom Alvarez's "How to Create Action, Fantasy and Adventure Comics" (separately reviewed) which is also an excellent how-to book.
Want to learn to draw .....start here.......2000-11-16
Mark Kistler's books are EXCELLENT for anyone who want to learn to draw. The layout of the book is fun easy to follow. Although it is geared toward children it is appropriate for a beginner adult. It starts with simple concepts and gradually builds on what you've already learned. Anyone at any age will be impressed by what you will be drawing in a short amount of time. I bought this book for my children and was so impressed , I started drawing myself. My children love this book and so do I.
Page after page of drawing fun!.......2000-04-11
Mark Kistler's books are wonderful, entertaining books that canteach anyone (of any age) how to draw! I bought his books for my sons, and I quickly became a devoted fan and an avid drawing maniac myself! The book is packed with pages of fun drawings, as well as 'story starters' in which kids are asked to complete the story. Mark's enthusiasm for drawing and story-telling just bubbles up out of the pages of this book. As a mom, I appreciate his encouragement for kids to watch less tv, say NO to violent video games and drugs, and to expand their brain power by getting involved in art. This book is a 'must have' for all teachers and parents who would like to see their kids motivated to express their creativity and feel good about their drawing ability.
After working with this book, even you can draw!.......2000-02-12
If you think you stink at drawing, think again! Mark Kistler shows you how, step by step, to draw pictures that really look like something and tell a story besides!
