Customer Reviews:
Very good book.......2007-09-11
I can only be enthusiastic when it comes to this book. The instructions and examples are very down to earth and clear. Just what I was looking for. As a result I then purchased Katrin's other book "Masking & Compositing" or as she says it should have been "Selecting, Masking & Compositing". I have purchased several books on Photoshop CS3 now and have read them all from cover to cover. Katrin's M&C book was written for CS - but I found it very instructive even when used with CS3.
Unbelievable Teacher.......2007-08-29
Katrin Eismann is nothing short of a genius. I have her DVD, and what she can do for someone serious about learning restoration and repair is second to none.
Always Learning.......2007-08-16
I took a one day Adobe Photoshop CS2 class. The instructor recommended this book for extra training. Photoshop is a program you can study for years and still have tons more to learn . This book gives you a great headstart. It's easy to follow and contains a great deal of usefull information. It's the kind of book you read cover to cover but it's also a good reference book. It's nice to be able to go at your own pace.
The most important Photoshop book I own.......2007-08-13
I have been in graphic design for 8 years, since Photoshop 5. I have purchased/read/borrowed every major book made for Photoshop from Peachpit and New Riders. From cheesy technique books, to instruction manuals, quick start guides, classroom in a books, and this is hands down, The most important Photoshop book I own.
You won't need another Photoshop instruction book.......2007-07-03
All I can say is WOW! I love this book. Katrin Eismann has outdone herself. I can't believe the work that must have gone into writing this book.
Katrin, retouching profession, teaches everything you need to know in order to become an expert Photoshop retouch artist. She covers everything from rebuilding damaged or torn photos to glamour touching photos with stylistic flair. This book is full of detailed examples, color photos and step by step tutorials for every situation.
I use Photoshop all the time as part of my photography. Katrin's book has become an invaluable tool to me. I constantly reference it. It seems that whenever I reach a Photoshop problem, the answer is in her book. In fact it is sitting on my desk right now as I type.
Whether you are a professional or a newbie to photo retouching, I would recommend that you purchase this book first, then don't purchase any other book; because this book teaches it all.
Thanks, Katrin; you rock.
Hope this helps.

Book Description
Each card in this inspiring deck offers an idea to stretch your approach to observing and chronicling the daily events around you. You'll learn how to harness the power of words (what to write about, and what to write with), explore extreme photography techniques without having any previous photography experience, focus on the little things (like a two-inch section of a painted mural you drive by every day), and discover unusual ways to create a self-portrait (from plastic wrap and tree lights, to close-ups of your hands). Includes 50 cards and a creativity notebook to record your own art-journal explorations.
Customer Reviews:
Very Cool Concept.......2007-09-26
I love these creativity cards! The graphics on one side are unique, interesting, colorful, and eye catching. The prompts on the flipside are thought-provoking, meaningful, and different. The small journal is a great creative jumpstart in itself. I love the colors and techniques that were used to produce the backgrounds. Think I'll even attempt to create some of those myself. The box housing the creativity cards and journal is sturdy and pleasant to look at.
This is a fresh concept, and I am enjoying this package very much.
By the way, this is in no way a "how to" of any type. It is intended to make you think about doing old things in a fresh way or to help you attempt something new altogether.
Highly recommended.
Wow!.......2007-08-05
these cards are amazing. each one is a little piece of art in itself. you'll want to frame and hang them. except then you wouldn't be able to turn them over and get a shot in the arm of inspiration... yummy. i'm too afraid to work in the little workbook as yet, tho. i don't wanna mess it up. :)
if you're looking for cutesy, pretty art, tho, look somewhere else. this is real, gritty from-the-soul art. the kind that hits you "right there". and hopefully will help you make your own journal pages that do the same.
several of them are geared towards photography but lots of it is the kind that can be done with even an el cheapo camera. the author will also have you using tape, glue, spraypaint, and maybe a few things you never thought of as art supplies before. this is the kind of journaling that begs you to jump in and get messy.
if you do any kind of visual journaling, i highly recommend these cards and workbook.
So Much Fun.......2007-08-05
I got this after much thought. I figured it was just another "how to do a journal book". But, I found it to be much fun to do the exersizes and if you are an artist with a block, this will help to unblock you. It can give you ideas you never really thought of before on approaching your art work. Plus, as I said, it is a lot of fun to do the exersizes suggested on the individual cards. The kit also includes a fun little notebook/journal book to do as you please with. If you teach art, these are also fun ideas to inspire your students. I plan on doing that with my students this Fall.
This is a Gem.......2007-07-26
First of all, this will make a perfect gift for anyone crafty or involved in journaling, scrapbooking, altered books, ATCs, etc. It's a very affordable gift that keeps on giving.
The author opens your eyes to new ways to be creative in a way anyone, whether an "artist" or not, can use everyday observations to create real, unique, personal, fun, journal pages. She'll encourage you to take in all your surroundings and find a common element - she was able to find the common element while sitting in an Italian restaurant and watching war protesters: she, the waiter, the protesters were all waiting, caught up in a moment in time which was the theme she used for one one of her journal pages. She uses paint, photography and any object that she can use to express herself in her work -and makes no apologies. I LOVE this little gem. Just lovely and real. You won't be disappointed.
Great things come in little boxed sets..........2007-07-04
I noticed that there was a 1 star review of "Wide Open...". No offense, reviewer, but clearly you don't have a clue. Yes, the cards in the set are sort of vague -- if you are looking for step-by-step instructions for making something, don't waste your money on this. And, yes, you do need to own... and have some very basic knowledge of... art supplies (again, no offense, but if you've been within spitting distance of an art supply or craft store, then you'll know what gesso is).
[Ok, stepping off my soap box and done with the snarky comments.] Randi Feuerhelm-Watts is such an inspiration! I love her style and the ideas for inspiration that she presents on the cards go way beyond some of the tired, old suggestions that seem to always crop up in art/craft publications.
I read all the cards in one sitting (because I'm obsessive like that!) and I did notice that some of them related to each other. Not that they are dependent on each other or that you would be lost if you pick them at random... but I did observe some links between the individual ideas. I think this is great for continuing themes in your art work. Also, while she references photography quite a bit (she is a photographer after all), I definitely do not feel that any of the ideas are pigeonholed by the techniques. The author's basic ideas translate really well no matter what kind of visual artwork you might do.
The cards themselves each feature snippets of the author's artwork on the back. This alone is incredibly inspirational. You almost get double the bang for your buck - pull out one of the cards to interpret the visual side and then come back to it later for inspiration from the narrative side.
My only complaint would be about the Creativity Notebook... I wouldn't really call it a complaint, persay. I guess I'm just ambivalent about it's inclusion in the set. On one hand she has provided some great backgrounds to help you combat "white page syndrome" as well as some random instructions to offer a jump start to someone who is new to visual journaling. But on the other hand, I don't see myself personally using it since I already have half a dozen journals and prefer to make my own backgrounds (once you get on a roll, its half the fun).
The ideas and techniques are presented in Randi's conversational style, along with her great little stories. While I have not had the pleasure of taking a class with her or meeting her, she comes across as the kind of person you'd love to have as an art friend because she'd always be inspiring and challenging. I think that's the greatest thing about this kit... she's managed to package a ton of her personality and a lot of what I imagine she teaches in her workshops into one cool product. This set definitely gets a front row spot on my art-bookshelf.
Book Description
Galen Rowell was the archetypal adventure photographer, his iconic images published in leading magazines and scores of books, exhibited in major galleries, and cherished by fans ranging from the Dalai Lama to news anchor Tom Brokaw. When he and his wife and business partner, Barbara Cushman Rowell, perished in a small plane crash in 2002, he had just completed a landmark assignment for National Geographic and had begun making stunning new images of his favorite old haunts in the Sierra Nevada.
Fortunately for us, his productivity was immense and his photographs meticulously archived, making possible this first and only comprehensive retrospective of his work. Rowell himself had no time for looking back: his creative energies went into books that combine his images and writings on a wide range of subjects including, climbing and expeditionary feats; exotic cultures; endangered wildlife and places; celebrations of light, color, and rare natural phenomena; and visionary interpretations of landscape.
All are magnificently on view in this retrospective, which includes more than 175 images representing all phases and dimensions of Rowell's singular career, chosen by the editors with whom he worked most closely, overseen by his family and studio colleagues, and reproduced to the highest standards of lithography from digital masters of his 35mm frames. Complementing and illuminating the pictures are essays and commentaries by Rowell's friends and associates from the worlds of mountaineering, conservation, photography, and publishing, along with an in-depth biographical introduction by Robert Roper and an appreciation of his work by photography critic Andy Grundberg.

Galen Rowell Unplugged.......2007-07-20
Spectacular Photos and what an athlete. His death was a loss, but he lives on in these images
Galen Rowell: A Retrospective.......2007-06-13
This is more a short biography with too few of the beautuful photos this talented outdoor photographer made. I would have like to have seen more full page photos and more of them.
Galen Rowell was the man.......2007-05-30
this book was amazing, the pictures are stunning, and the stories about him are almost unbelievable. I highly recommend this book for fans of photography or anyone who loves the outdoors.
Photography at its best........2007-05-13
If you are familiar with with the work of Galen Rowell I don't need to elaborate on the beauty and quality of his work, if you aren't familiar with this man and his work it will be a valuable addition to your knowledge and enjoyment of photography. Galen Rowell had an unfortunate and untimely death
after a very active life of globe trotting for photography that transcends
the material plane. The book presents many of his best works in a lovely format. A coffee table book that will get noticed.
Must own for any fans of Galen or the outdoors.......2007-03-27
If you have every looked at Galen's photos and wanted to see more, this is it. With his life cut short, at least we still have archived material that can be released in a book this nice to bring us more glimpses of his world. The color is amazing, the subjects grand, and Galens storys bring it all alive in my livingroom.

Stunning pictures.......2007-05-12
Mike Fay has done it again with this collection of amazing photos. Each picture tells a unique and compelling story that make you feel the real struggles in Gabon.
Great Book.......2007-04-16
Bought this book for my mother-in-law as a birthday present. She has traveled to Africa many times so it was perfect for her. She was thrilled with the book. The book is spectacular. We would recommend highly.
The most Impressive Book in my Library.......2007-03-08
Having been a member of The National Geographic Society since 1952 and with a library accumulated in that time, I have not seen before Last Place on Earth such a fine book so magnificently produced.
Incredible Adventure and Book.......2007-03-08
As a photographer and a journalist who has a passion for intense travel and the natural world, I think this is one of the most amazing books published in the past 20 years. Passionate, heartbreaking, and beautiful the world and work of Nick Nichols and Mike Fay shown in this book was eye opening. Highly reccomend. Only comment that maybe negative is the size a bulk of the book.
Retrospective.......2007-01-27
This is a beautifully bound book covering a wide range of areas in and about the jungles of Africa. The images are possible only for someone who spent as much time there as these two did, and the breathtaking work shows this condition. The mega-transect journal is a very nice companion to the photographs, and really helps to convey a mood and philosophy of their work. There passion is obvious.

Customer Reviews:
Not that quick, easy or simple.......2007-09-25
I'm a beginner but I'm an addict and this book was not helpful at all. It is all about the doo dads and the add ons, and there were very few layouts that had more than two photos on the page. I am more interested in simple, clean (and easy and quick) layouts where the photos are the focus. This book was not the book for that. The sequel which I bought at the same time was a bit better, so if you're still considering this book at least buy the sequel.
For beginners only.......2007-08-10
I ordered this book after reading all the great reviews, and I was disappointed. I was expecting 100 layout ideas that I could use as a starting point for my own layouts. Yes, there are 100 layouts in the book, but it is a VERY, VERY basic book, and the layouts are VERY simplified. It's pretty much a resource for beginners on how to use basic products and how to journal. I'll be giving this away to a newer scrapbooker.
great.......2007-07-20
I love this book. It has a lot of creative and fun ideas. All can easily be adapted to fit your own needs. My money was well spent.
not so great.......2007-07-12
Not as many good ideas. I was hoping for 100 different layout options, but it was ways to use layout, embellishments, etc, not just layouts. Book was kind of cheesy
Great resource to get you going on road block days.........2007-01-29
Ever have days where you just don't feel creative? This book offers quick ideas that will get you over that stump or help a beginnner get going. Well worth the price.

Customer Reviews:
A must have book!.......2007-02-25
This book is loaded with more information and tips than I could possibly mention here. It's interesting from cover to cover. Consider it a tool to further your education in the graphics, photo retouching field. Highly recommended!
Photoshop Restoration and Retouching.......2006-08-31
Very detail lessons. Not for the Photoshop novice. A good working knowledge of Photoshop is needed. Excellent learning tool for those interested in all aspects of photo restoration and retouching.
Katrin Eismann is a great teacher.......2006-04-28
I've read her other book on compositing and all I can say is I love her style of teaching! It's inspiring and not canned at all. She doesn't teach you to just dial in numbers, but instead she focuses on the concepts so that you can then decide what numbers you need by yourself!
I definately recommend this book for any photoshopper who is serious about making the most out of his/her software.
Welcome update for a classic guidebook.......2005-12-31
I was pleased to see this second edition of the classic guide to retouching your images digitally. As always, each task is presented clearly and simply, with everything you need to know to successfully fix your flawed photographs. Highly recommended.
This is a Must-Have Photoshop Book.......2005-12-04
This book primarily deals with retouching and restoring photographs. But it is obvious Ms Eismann knows Photoshop inside and out. She clearly explains how each technique works, uses tons of very effective photos in her step-by-step descriptions, and does an excellent job of explaining how Photoshop accomplishes the task at hand. Her results are positively stunning.
I've purchased and read many expensive PS books over the years since I started tinkering with it (v. 3) and this writer is simply the best of breed. Well, I'd have to say Ben Willmore is pretty cool too, but for retouching work nobody does it better than Katrin.
Amazon.com
It's disappointing when a photo of a loved one is marred by "red eye" or the wrong exposure, or when a cherished picture from long ago cracks and fades. Luckily, Katrin Eismann seems to know every trick available in Photoshop for making photographs--film or digital--look just how you want them to, whether that means restoring what has been lost, fixing incorrect exposures, erasing dust and scratches, or even recreating reality. (Who wouldn't want to lose a few wrinkles?) Eismann has the artistic eye to appreciate good photography, the technical savvy to be able to offer numerous solutions to any given problem, and the writing and teaching skills to walk readers clearly through these solutions.
The book assumes readers have a working knowledge of Photoshop. It does not go through the basics or cover complex selections or masking, although it does quickly explain essentials like shortcuts, context-sensitive menus, quick image-navigation tricks, the varieties of layers, and smart file management--all issues that expedite workflow and distinguish regular and power users. The book even outlines what it takes to set up shop as a professional retoucher, discussing equipment, studio arrangement, and working with clients and contracts.
The author strongly advises reading the book from start to finish, and she's structured the projects so that they build upon each other. The book is divided into three sections: correcting tone, exposure, and color; restoration, repairing, and rebuilding; and portrait and glamour retouching. Each page is filled with plenty of before-and-after images, along with screen shots of palettes and dialog boxes.
This book makes tackling each of your photo's flaws look easy--it seems like even the worst photo can be saved. Also, by the end, readers will have an appreciation for those who do retouching for a living--it takes planning, a good eye, consistency, and a lot of organization, or you're just flailing away with adjustment layers. You can get a look at a sample tutorial and chapter on the companion Web site, digitalretouch.org, which also includes all project images and other resources. --Angelynn Grant

Customer Reviews:
Excellent job writing this book........2004-02-08
I'm a novice who wanted to restore a whole bunch of all photos from family that my grandmother had in her atic, so I decided to buy Photohop by recomendation of a friend of mind. I have no previous experience in this field, but this book was everything I needed it.
The author is so detailed and the practices so well prepare that it took me no time to hands of it, and look like a profesional in front of my entire family and friends. I would recommend this book to anyone, experts or novices like me.
A Gift for the Flaw-Plagued Photographer.......2003-11-12
I will admit it. Many of my photos have flaws. Many have not been preserved properly.
They represent memories, however, so I am reluctant to toss them in the trash. Katrin Eisman's book equipped me with the skills to restore them to a state to which I can be proud. This book has helped me take my well-intentioned, yet poorly executed photos, correct the color, contrast and tone. Mold, cracks and torn edges mystically disappear.
The moments I attempted to preserve were precious to me. The beautiful images that result from her easy to find, easy to follow, step-by-step instructions are a gift.
Great book of Photoshop Knowlege.......2003-08-19
I've been thru this book, was not able to put it down. After going throught the tutorials and reading through the chapters I feel very confident that I will be able to really bring poor pictures back to justice. Katrin really knows how to explain the subject along with showing very good examples of work done, this is a must have for anyone wanting to step their feet into photo restoration and retouching, and not just switching a monkey head for a real one. I have actually read through this book twice since I've had it.
Brilliant.......2003-05-06
This is a deep, professional treatment of it's topic. I've seen several nice books on retouching, but none that treat restoration with such skill. Eismann doesn't back away from the really treacherous restoration problems and obviously enjoys tackling and renewing a photo that everyone else considers hopeless. She generously offers up information and techniques that I think a lot of other restorers would jealously guard.
I was recently put in charge of digitally archiving and restoring my family's pictures. Some photos dating from the 1800's were in terrible condition--my main problem was the images had faded to almost nothing. I bought this book because Eismann specifically addresses this problem and my results were fantastic. My family thinks I'm a photoshop magician (I'm not--I consider myself a solid intermediate user who intends on becoming a photoshop magician....) and I am so proud that I was able to preserve something this important to my family.
The other reviews support how terrific this book is but I really wanted to show my appreciation by adding another. With so many expensive photoshop books to wade through, this one rises to the top as essential.
PS--I use photoshop 7. Though this book was printed before photoshop 7 was released, it is still completely relevant. People who think the "healing brush" (wonderful as it is) fixes all ills couldn't have very big restoration problems.
Do Yourself A Favor And Get It.......2003-04-17
This is a fantastic book for photographers who wish to gain greater facility with Photoshop. It is (appropriately enough for a photography book) written in a pellucid style, and it's fun to use and jam-packed with useful tips and information. The author's website provides an additional ton of up-to-the-minute information and advice. The book will pay for itself many times over in the form of materials you didn't waste and frustration you didn't experience.

great book.......2007-09-23
Lots of great ideas for scrapbooks. Comes as a very handy tool when you need a little inspiration for your layouts.
The Amazing Page: 650 New Scrapbook Page Ideas, Tips And Techniques (Memory Makers).......2007-08-06
Wonderful ideas to start you off to scrapbooking! Scrapbooking is a wonderful way to say I love you to your family and friends and this book gives you plenty of inspiring ideas.
Excellent book of ideas!.......2007-07-13
I found this to be a great springboard for scrapbooking ideas. I borrowed this book from the library and just had to have it. It's packed with pages on a huge variety of topics by some of Memory Makers best scrappers. If you're looking for fresh scrapbooking ideas such as you'd get from magazines, you'll like this book. I'm a die hard scrapbooker and have been for several years and I really enjoyed this book.
Great ideas!.......2007-05-07
I really like this book it's got lots of great ideas! I'm bummed to find out it doesn't have any cheer leading examples in it.
Full of ideas.......2007-04-24
Every time I get stuck with a page I reach for this book. There are so many different layouts that there's always something that helps me to get over my "scrapper's block". There's also a short description on the inspiration and construct behind each page. The reason I didn't give this five stars is that I would have liked to see the pages grouped by style (eg heritage, contemporary, richly embellished) instead of theme, now the truly great pages get too easily lost between the pages that don't inspire me the least.

Great ideas to get your creative juices flowing.......2004-11-12
I got this book from the library prior to commiting to buying it. After ordering 8 books from Amazon this one wasn't one of them. Most of the ideas are too darn "cutsie" for me (i.e. cropping your baby's photos and putting mouse or bunny ears and whiskers is my definition of "cutsie"--not my style of scrapbooking, I'm not here to offend anybody who prefers this). The back of the book has lettering patterns and title ideas which anybody may find on numerous websites such as scrapbooking.com. I suggest this book is great for those begginers who need ideas for baby scrapbook themes: Documenting pre- & post-pregnancy, baby's firsts, baby's nursery, etc. It does not have much explanation on how the pages were constructed, but for my own sake I usually don't follow step-by-step,visualizing the parts of a layout from the photo itself. This book may be good for a beginner, but more advanced scrapbookers might find it too outdated.
Decent idea book, but hard to replicate what you see........2004-01-20
There's a ton of pages to look at, but not as much information about technique as some other books I've seen. If you're already into scrapbooking and just need some fresh ideas, this could be helpful.
Good creative ideas.......2003-01-25
I have been scrapbooking for years now and with baby #1 on the way wanted some additional creative ideas. This book does have some great ideas of varying complexity and documenting some of those moments that I may have not thought of. I recommend this for anyone doing baby pages.
Loved it!.......2002-06-04
This was a great idea book. Get this book before your baby even arrives to help give you pointers on what to take pictures of and things to keep for your scrapbook. Plus, it helps pass the time by! After my baby was born I still had "fetal-brain-drain" and needed ideas for page layouts. In the back there are ideas for page titles and poems to include in your baby's book. Well worth the money......
I just love it!.......2002-02-01
This book is great! It has wonderful ideas for putting together all the baby pictures. I would recommend it to anyone!

Evocative prod to the creative muse - The English Patient.......2007-06-05
There are multiple creative intelligences: poetic, literary, musical, sculptural, visual, kinesthetic, aromatic. For me, Gwen Diehn's 128 color photo pages captured the need to communicate feelings onto two dimensional space, quietly reflecting complicated passions. More than a how-to, she inspires one to move beyond predetermined materials (buying packaged premade novelties, rubber stamps, ribbons, alphabets, etc) to explore one's own potential for introducing ingenuity to the calligraphed, water colored, decoupaged, encrusted, cut and folded page. Each person's uniqueness cannot be fully celebrated in materials designed by someone else, and Ms. Diehn encourages the reader to take the risk of discovering their own visual voice, and add to the history of visual journals like Herodotus' volume in The English Patient. Take a chance, try something new, you may discover your potential for bliss. Highly recommended read.
The Aesthetic Page.......2007-05-24
I came to THE DECORATED PAGE as a text-centric journal-keeper who rarely added anything else, and that would be nothing much more than gluing in a comic strip, artifact or article relative to the content of an entry. I was leery of a book with this title: what mattered was the text, so why decorate extraneously for decoration sake? Then I read what Gwen Diehn had to say (and show) and I immediately went out and bought a small inexpensive watercolor set, water color pencils and a pack of cheap brushes. Diehn offers general how-to information about various techniques and tools and her book is richly illustrated with photographs of a variety of journals. This is a fine companion volume to the author's other book, THE DECORATED JOURNAL. Both are good for beginner or more advanced journal keepers and artists.
What Diehn has to say is, other media can augment the meaning of the text with mood, highlighting and/or explicit illustration. She recounts her own revelation while keeping a scientific nature observation journal for a college course, and it was that story that woke me up. I'm not breaking my allegiance to text, and I am not decorating for the sake of decorating, but when I record the time of sunrise, for instance, I first lay some streaks of color that record the visual impact of it and write atop the streaks, and when I include a bulleted list or a tide chart, I set it off on a color block. It's a start and I thank Diehn for the encouragement.

The examples shown are fantastic. Great ideas! I wish that I only had the time to execute a journal such as these.
bought it for a friend.......2007-02-20
I love this book - I bought a second copy for an artist friend - the examples are wonderful and creative, and it also contains some step by step projects, but not so many that this is a "do it my way" book.
Great entree into the world of journaling and papercrafts.......2006-02-21
I've always kept a written journal, but never thought of being creative with them until I saw this book on display at a bookstore. I've sinced thumbed through many other similar books (including Perrella's) and Deihn's are more instructive and interesting. I bought this book before I discovered her other one (specifically for Journaling); I'd recommend the latter if you don't do scrapbooks.
She covers dry and wet processes, cutouts, copier transfers, design layout suggestions, altering book coverers, watercolor/gouache/stamping, and more. There's lots of examples for inspiration. This book is pretty complete.
