Customer Reviews:
An overview ith the details.......2005-11-10
This book breaks it all down. Time management, budgeting, dealing with staff and technical issues. For those in the field already, its a refresher and a confirmation of what you're doing. For those new to the field, it can serve as an operations manual for guidance. Appendix B that describes the job description is invaluable.
Practical techniques.......2003-05-03
This book has the basic knowlegde tha every CM must know, its easy to read, and it give you a better and required professional overview of construccion projects.
An essential book for project managers.......2001-04-19
Easy and comprehensible step by step guide to project management, very helpful for both experienced and entry level project management engineers
Book Description
Systematically organised for instructional purposes, this single volume communicates to students and to those setting out on their careers all essential technical and construction basics necessary for the practical realisation of a wide range of designs.
This textbook on building demonstrates an integral approach which
combines specialised technical knowledge with the lyrical beauty of the illustrated buildings, and background information on cultural and historical aspects.
Building is perceived not just as a feat of technology or engineering
but the culmination of an artistic, creative act of will which can be more effectively translated into physical entities if the technical principles of construction are mastered.
The book is divided into the following chapters:
raw materials (modules); [masonry, concrete, wood, glass …
building components (elements); Wall, openings, ceiling, roof, stairs ….
building types (structures);
buildings (examples) which illustrate the building process of a project.
Customer Reviews:
The best student foundation book.......2007-06-12
I have reviewed many attempts at a comprehensive description of the complex subject of architecture, and this is the best. This book is far better than the exhaustively recommended Francis Ching (all due respect), and even better than Unwin's Architectural Notebook, which is also excellent. This is the very first book I would recommend for any serious architecture student. It covers tectonics and construction in elegant detail but, even more importantly, this book delves into the conceptual intentions behind the tectonics, at every scale. Telling examples, well chosen, illuminate the ideas, and the case studies feature some of the finest contemporary architecture in the world today. Simply the best.
Essential book for architecture students and teachers.......2006-06-12
The English title might be misleading--this book is not about 'construction', but rather about what the Germans call Baukunst, the art of construction, or the art of 'putting buildings together', considering the spatial order as an inseparable part of that putting things together.
The book provides a structured approach to the basics of contemporary architectural composition, several essays introducing fundamental concepts and giving you the bibliography to go into them in detail (the key part is making them all fit into an overall framework, and pointing at the sources that normally take years to discover), and illustrate several remarkable buildings in remarkable detail, with excellent descriptions reaching a depth and quality of analysis unfortunately missing in typical architectural publications.
Andrea Deplazes, the editor and author or co-author of many of the articles, teaches at the Zurich ETH (and I would guess the same must be true for the authors of most of the other articles), which for well over a hundred years has been one of the few true schools of architecture in the world. The book glows with the power of this accumulated knowledge developed in a true academic environment since the times of Semper. It also gives a glimpse at how the ETH consistently produces first class ordinary architecture, and for that matter first class extraordinary architecture too.
This book will be of huge value to every architecture student, teacher, and architectural designer. I bought it by a fortunate mistake --I thought a construction book from the ETH was sure to be an excellent reference book on technology, and the mail delivered a treasure trove of architectural knowledge instead.
Great resource.......2006-03-19
I purchased this book for a construction class and as an architecture student, I find it very helpful. The book is not a construction how-to and the images are not very detailed nor are any of the images in color, but it is a compilation of a variety of architectural examples that use different or innovative construction methods. A great supplement to a studio course for inspiration and incorporating interesting structure into projects.
Book Description
The first textbook on the design of FRP for structural engineering applications
Composites for Construction is a one-of-a-kind guide to understanding fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) and designing and retrofitting structures with FRP. Written and organized like traditional textbooks on steel, concrete, and wood design, it demystifies FRP composites and demonstrates how both new and retrofit construction projects can especially benefit from these materials, such as offshore and waterfront structures, bridges, parking garages, cooling towers, and industrial buildings.
The code-based design guidelines featured in this book allow for demonstrated applications to immediately be implemented in the real world. Covered codes and design guidelines include ACI 440, ASCE Structural Plastics Design Manual, EUROCOMP Design Code, AASHTO Specifications, and manufacturer-published design guides. Procedures are provided to the structural designer on how to use this combination of code-like documents to design with FRP profiles.
In four convenient sections, Composites for Construction covers:
* An introduction to FRP applications, products and properties, and to the methods of obtaining the characteristic properties of FRP materials for use in structural design
* The design of concrete structural members reinforced with FRP reinforcing bars
* Design of FRP strengthening systems such as strips, sheets, and fabrics for upgrading the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structural members
* The design of trusses and frames made entirely of FRP structural profiles produced by the pultrusion process
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for learning and designing!.......2007-10-03
This book is a great help if you are learning or designing with FRP composites. It's probably the best book I've bought in the subject. I strongly recommend it.

The book was shrink wrapped but it was damaged. Not sure if it was the fault of the publisher or the seller but in either case I expected a better product.

Customer Reviews:
Phenomenal resource.......2002-05-02
I am a public owner and find this book to be one of the most complete and easy to understand discussions of the design-build process that I have seen. Beard, Loulakis and Wundram are well-known industry experts and all active in the Design-Build Institute of America. They bring their years of practical experience to their writings and have a strong sense of reality. I particularly found the contract and liability chapters written by Loulakis to be very helpful. I also enjoy the other books written by Loulakis, particularly "Design-Build Lessons Learned," (2001 Edition), which has the most up-to-date analysis of design-build caselaw and is a great resource to keep up to date with this subject. I'm anxiously awaiting to see if the authors decide to come out with another book in the near future. Keep up the good work, gentlemen!
An excelent guide for design-builders.......2001-06-01
Design-Build: Planning through Development covers most aspects of this project delivery method and is an excellent source of information for all the parties involved in the design and construcion business. Owners, Contractors, CMs and Designers can benefit from this book by obtaining guidelines and good orientation of how and when implement D-B as an effective project delivery method that is getting more followers everywhere.

the perfect overview book for INtro to Constru Class.......2000-11-02
This book is wonderful in its content. I especially like the way it chapeters separate into the overview (sorta History) and then the players and then the process and then communications. It has very good examples of things like specifications and partial drawings. it has exmple questions. it has very good charts and lists. But what I liked the most is the balanced portrayal of the players such as which contract method is preferred by say the architect and which most benefits the Construction Manager. We are using it for our Intr to Constr Tech Class. Saves me from copying info from several dif sources.
Customer Reviews:
Constitutional or Unconstitutional - Explained.......2000-08-20
An excellent analysis of how the Justices of the Supreme Court decide whether or not a law (created by Congress or the States) is valid or not. More than just a compilation of majority, concurring and dissenting opinions, this book looks at why the decisions were made, not just what the decisions were. Well worth the money and a fine addition to the library of anyone interested in law or the legislative process.
