Book Description

This study explores the ideas of the enigmatic and controversial visionary, known as Padmasambhava. It takes as its starting point a unique and hitherto untouched source: Padmasambhava's writings preserved in the rNying-ma rgyud-'bum that remain excluded from the standard editions of the Tibetan Tanjur collections to this day. The first chapter explains Padmasambhava's holistic background that reflects an anthropocosmic worldview. The second chapter deals with the problem of how this anthropocosmic whole becomes enworlded as samsara and of how the enworlded experiencer disentangles himself from it and regains his original wholeness. The third chapter assesses Padmasambhava's psychological insights and their hermeneutical interpretations. In this study, Herbert Guenther discloses the mind of one of the greatest spiritual geniuses in human history, Padamasambhava -- wanderer, mystic, and one of the original founders of Tibetan Buddhism. Here his teachings step out from obscurity to speak with a wonderful clarity. In them is found a surprisingly postmodern portrait of how process dynamics self-organize to construct and "light up" our worlds of experience.

5 out of 5 stars Guenther's brilliant work.......2006-10-15

Although Padmasambhava (eighth century A.D.) is revered as a second buddha, almost nothing reliable is known about him. His Tantric works also have been rarely mentioned by the Tibetans themselves, probably because they were deemed too subversive. The late Prof. Guenther, who had made a lifelong study of Padmasambhava and his Nyingma lineage, begins his monograph by reviewing the scant information about the "precious teacher" (guru rimpoche) that is available, and then proceeds to delineate Padmasambhava's original, holistic, and visionary philosophy of liberation. As the author notes, "Padmasambhava has revealed himself as an `exception' personage whose vision and evolutionary thinking were far ahead of his time and have remained unparalleled through the history of Buddhist thought" (p. 38).

Utilizing a phenomenological-hermeneutical approach, as was his custom, Guenther page after page seeks to unravel Padmasambhava's Gnostic thought for the comprehension of Western readers, who are steeped in Aristotelian categories. As always, Guenther is not easy to follow, and sometimes his terminology gets in the way of comprehension. His insights about the teachings of the second buddha, however, are truly seminal.

After a detailed examination of Padmasambhava's cosmology, as a tripartite system springing from mystical experiences, Guenther goes on to discuss--in a 54-page chapter--the adept's Gnostic involutionary schema: the path home to Wholeness. This process consists in a deconstruction of the empirical, finite mind, whereupon the Whole lights up. In Padmasambhava's mystical language (and in Guenther's rendering):

Through the dissipation (dissolution) of representational thinking's constructs, )the experiencer) immerses himself in immortality's elixir (that is the whole's) giving birth to thoughts/meanings;

When the phenomenal disspates (dissolves) into its legitimate dwelling, (the experiencer) immerses himself in immortality's elixir (that is the whole's) dimensionality of meaning; and

When (the experiencer's) ontic foundation dissipates (dissolves) into its legitimate dwelling, (the experiencer) immerses himself in (the whole's) energy.

Padmasambhava's writings are riddled with Gnostic metaphors, which demonstrates that he was undoubtedly influenced by Sethian and Valentinian Gnosticism, though equally unquestionably his philosophical edifice was very much his own original creation.

In the concluding 75-page chapter, which is the most obscure, Guenther inquires into the symbolism of Padmasambhava's "luminous language of being." Central to this language is the concept of the "Little Man of Light" (khye'u-chung), the Anthropos, who is commissioned by his divine parents to retrieve the precious jewel of "real being," which then allows him to find his way back to his real home, the Whole. The consideration revolves around the originary Light (mkha') and the dharma-kaya (chos-sku), as well as the ecstatic leap into Wholeness, in the context of Padmasambhava's sweeping anthropocosmology.

In his epilogue, Guenther brilliantly summarizes his findings. "As a visionary thinker of the highest order," writes the author, "he is one who knows and speaks from experience and, for this reason alone, he is a striking example of individuality" (p. 205). "In conclusion we may say that Padmasambhava's importance lies in the fact that he is first and foremost a process-oriented thinker, maybe even the first in recorded history."

5 out of 5 stars difficult but rewarding.......2000-11-12

Reading Carl Jung would help in understanding this book, and of course a study of Guenther's previous work. Also, and more importantly, a serious meditation practice, and thorough grasp of buddhist philosophy and practice. That the information has been kept under wraps by tibetan authorities, including respected lamas, is intriquing to say the least. I believe it is because the approach cuts through sectarianism and its power structures (no enlightenement without initiation, etc.) completely, to the essence of spirituality.

5 out of 5 stars A visual treat.......2002-09-17

We review a number of books and the first time we saw this one, we were very sure it was going to make to our top selections list. And we were not wrong.

A beautifully laid out book with 500 vivid color photographs is a visual treat. Recipedelights.com gives it a "must-buy" rating for interior designers and style lovers. One of the few books that correct the injustice done by western journalists and gives a positive spin to thousands of years of culture and history. It truly reflects the grandeur of Indian style by weaving a colorful mélange that will come as no surprise to anyone who has ever visited India. This book explores a spectrum of interiors ranging from Palaces to Havelis to Huts. It does not bore with endless text or try to influence the judgment of the reader. Short text (In English, German and French) accompanies each photograph though the pictures speak for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Indian Interiors.......2002-01-22

Excellent value for the money. Beautiful photos covering a broad range of interiors.

5 out of 5 stars DELICIOUS!!.......2001-11-26

This totally sumptuous book has been beautifully produced and is proof yet again that Taschen are publishing some of the most beautiful books around. Apart from being a visual delight, each picture has accompanying text on the place featured. The book covers a wide range of interiors from palaces and havelis to Rajasthani huts and everything in between. Whether you are interested in Indian style or interiors generally, you will find much to like in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Hours of fun.......2000-01-23

This LUSH book captivates the eye and provides such a visual feast of color, I feel saturated, then satiated, each time I dip into it. Good for hours of fun.

I have to say, I was lucky enough to meet Deidi on her travels in Ladakh and can tell you that she is one intrepid traveler. There was a war going on in Kashmir when she went to take these photos - although you'd never know it from these pictures which paint such a beautiful image of these sumptuous settings.

She is a great photographer, with three Taschen books to her credit (Gardens of France, and Fantasy Worlds). She also makes enormous photos of sacred trees in India which are exhibited in galleries - very dramatic and her best work yet!

This book focuses a great deal on Rajasthan, but also includes regional coverage of key areas.

A first of its kind and a good antidote to the predictable picture books of India. Everyone expects India photo books to show weird babas in Benares and starving people in Calcutta, so it's good for the West to see there's more to India than that.

Glad to see that scenes from the folk and peasant traditions are included alongside the fantastic royal palaces, proving that art has no boundaries.

5 out of 5 stars Indian Interiors.......2000-01-03

This is a gorgeous book, beautifully laid out, with good photography and a vast range of type of interiors from palaces to village huts. Having spent significant time traveling throughout India, I frankly opened this book fully expecting to be disappointed and expecting it to be one more example of journalism not being able to do justice to the breadth and scope of India. We see that failure in all manner of books about India, from cook books, design books, culture books, and travel books; any subject that trys to cover the subcontinent in one fell swoop. Remarkably, this book achieves what no others I've seen has. In addition to photography of Deco interiors, British Revival, and Native Cultural Design, INDIAN INTERIORS wisely leaves the commentary to short blocks of text detailing the background of the property and the homeowners but not forming broad judgements or attempting to endlessly characterize and embellish. I have photo books on Village India, India Rail, Indian Design, etc., and they all try to do too much and not let the material speak for itself. This book is different, very different, and from what I've seen from this publisher in other venues, Taschen is one to watch for if you like your material presented succinctly and beautifully without gushing or extraneous filler.

Book Description

• Detailed instructions for creating a home that harmonizes with the natural and spiritual energies of its environment

• Unlike feng shui, which favors adding "cures" to cover existing problems, vaastu (like holistic medicine) focuses on fixing underlying problems for the health of the entire system

• By the director of the foremost vaastu center in India

• Includes 100 line drawings to make all the complexities of vaastu understandable to a beginner

Feng shui practitioners are quickly discovering vaastu, the Indian art of environmental design that helps you create a home that is in harmony with the natural and spiritual energies surrounding it. Until now, books on vaastu have told you where to place your doors or ponds without fully explaining the rationale behind this. The Vaastu Workbook presents vaastu as it was meant to be understood--as an interconnected part of the great Indian tradition of sacred knowledge, along with yoga, ayurveda, and astrology.

Using hundreds of clear line drawings, The Vaastu Workbook takes you through every conceivable vaastu situation, exploring the dos and don'ts of window and door placement, interior design, street focus, directional facing, landscaping, and much more. Introductory chapters provide a thorough grounding in the basics of Indian astrology, the five elements, and the healing tradition of ayurveda, all of which is necessary to truly understand the details of vaastu. With this knowledge in hand, even a beginner can quickly learn how to design a new home--or renovate an existing one--in order to bring peace, prosperity, and happiness to those who live there.

4 out of 5 stars My life related to the examples given.......2007-08-23

Because of some negative occurrences in my life over a long period of time I started to look into what might be causing the bad fortune. I had read about feng sui and was guided to Vaastu and ordered this book. I was surprised when I read the examples how closely they reflected what was happening in my life. I am definitely looking at moving from my home - the conditions can not be changed - and interested in seeing what happens. At this point, I really don't have much more to loose and can only gain by looking into a residence that reflects the requirements of Vaastu.

1 out of 5 stars Maybe Not.......2007-07-04

This is not feng shui. Make no mistake. In fact, I bought this book because I was eager to learn about the philosophy of Vaastu and how it differs from its Asian cousin. Unfortunately, I found it more disheartening than anything else. Apparently, if your house is not situated favorably according to the principles of Vaastu, you have no alternative but to sell off and move to some place that is. Sure, if you have the money to hire an architect who has Vaastu training, then find the correct plot of land according to a Vaastu sage and pay to have your house built according to Vaastu principles, this is your book. For the rest of us, save your $12. I wish I had!

3 out of 5 stars A good, basic introduction.......2006-07-01

Lucidly explains the principles of vaastu, but does not completely satisfy, primarily because the author seems intent to keep this a brief introduction. Certain chapters need greater extrapolation.

That said, if you want a basic primer on vaastu principles, have no worries about starting here.

5 out of 5 stars This book is vastupendous!.......2003-06-27

I am one of many to say that vastu is here to stay. I really never knew anything vastu until my grandmother from Calcutta told me to move out of my parents house and find a wife so she could have grandkids. Well, after I moved out, I found that my world seemed to be closing in around me. What I didn't realize was that my house, my job were not "Flowing." I had knots all over my crazy life. It was when my grandmother sent me this book on Vastu for my 42nd birthday that I realized that I needed to "move" a lot of things around. Now I seem to be able to breathe better, and the world around is more pleasant.

5 out of 5 stars A life-saver!.......2002-03-05

This book really saved me from disaster. I was suffering from bad health and many financial difficulties that almost led me to take my life. When I understood that the Southwest defect in my house was the cause of all my troubles, I immediately corrected the defect and, in my case, the results were so dramatic that it probably saved my life.

        Book Description

Cabeza de Vaca came to the New world in 1527 as part of a Spanish expedition to conquer the region north of the Gulf of Mexico. His exploration party lost contact with their ships, set out northward on foot, and traveled, their numbers soon reduced from 300 to 4, across Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and northern Mexico for the next eight years. In addition to being one of the great true adventure stories of all time, Cabeza de Vaca's account of their travels is an unparalleled source of firsthand information on the pre-European Southwest--the variety of its climate, its flora and fauna, the customs of its natives. They were the first to see the opossum and the buffalo, the Mississippi and the Pecos, pine-nut mash and mesquite-bean flour. This book contains the first description in literature of a West Indies Hurricane.

"Cabeza de Vaca was not only a physical trailblazer: he was also a literary pioneer, and he deserves the distinction of being called the Southwest's first writer.... The Relación, while not fiction, possesses most of the attributes of a good novel."--William T. Pilkington

Alvar Nez Cabeza de Vaca was the first European to cross the North American continent. This remarkable book is his odyssey, first written in 1542 as an official report to the king of Spain under the title La Relación.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing journey through history and faith!.......2007-06-17

My son and I heard this book on tape nine years ago, and frequently refer to it to this day. We were delighted to find it in print form. An amazing, true and vulnerable account of a man who stumbled into his destiny simply by doing the right thing a step at a time. Some incredible history. De Vaca was [...] when Columbus returned home in chains . . .

4 out of 5 stars Harrowing tale of Survival in pre-conquest North America.......2006-09-18

For many, if not most Americans, early history of the Americas goes something like this - Columbus to the Pilgrims to the American Revolution, end of story. Unfortunately, this abbreviated tale not only leaves many gaps in knowledge, but bypasses some truly amazing stories. `Cabeza De Vaca's Adventures in the Unknown Interior of America' is one of the best examples of the incredible tales that are often overlooked from the early history of European exploration and conquest of the Americas.

This is a first hand account from a survivor of an ill-fated attempt of a Spanish conquistador to conquer and colonize Florida and the Gulf Coast of North America. Of over four hundred proud men who landed with high hopes of vast wealth in gold, only four survived, after an eight year struggle, making their way across the North American continent from Florida back into Spanish controlled Mexico. The author of the book emerged naked from the wilderness, with nothing of value to show for his harrowing eight year experience except his story, which he wrote hoping to gain favor from his king.

The tale of the author's eight year struggle is simply incredible, and for most modern readers, sometimes unbelievable. He relates the missteps and misadventures that reduced him and his companions from proud conquistadors to weak, naked men, sometimes only surviving as slaves of native tribes. His writing gives a unique snapshot of Native life in that region before its conquest by Europeans, and covers a wide variety of tribes and cultures, both those who were hostile and helpful to him. In the second half of his narrative, he relates events that are nearly impossible for most modern minds to credit, as he tells of how he gained status with the natives by becoming a faith healer, and even of raising a man from the dead. Regardless of whether or not you credit his stories of becoming a faith healing messiah followed by hundreds of adoring natives as historical, it certainly makes for an amazing and lively tale.

While the story itself certainly merits five stars, the writing does not rise to the same level. Cabeza De Vaca was not primarily a writer, and was not writing for a broad audience, but only to impress his king in hopes that he would be rewarded for his service. He leaves out details, background, and scrambles chronology, which may make it necessary to reread certain passages to make sure you get the gist of what he is writing. Of course, as he wrote in Spanish, there is the factor of what is lost in translation as well. Still, this slim volume is packed with fascinating information and incredible tales of survival, and I highly recommend that you discover it for yourself - four stars.

5 out of 5 stars A book of unparralled value........2005-06-08

Why read a 'history' fantasy when you can read one man's true adventure? "Adventures in the Unknown Interior of America" is a real source document. Rolling through the pages one can sense the genuine experience of a man alone in the 'New World', and understand the very real challenges. Through Cabeza de Vaca's eyes one can get a fresh look at the Native American cultures that existed before Europeans took over.

History really happened, it is not the musings of men (or women) who were not there. History is the actual experience of the participants. This book is alive with the living experience of a key player in the exploration of the American continent by Europeans.

And, there is a bonus. The book reveals the character of a man, and the impact of real events on that character . Cabeza de Vaca grows and changes in the pages. With all of the paper wasted in the publishing business, and all of the speculations of historians staining perfectly good paper, it is a joy to behold the real thing.

        5 out of 5 stars Naked faith.......2004-02-24

I concur with all those who have praised this book, particularly the reviewer who suggested that it offered a great deal to confound many Christians who are hard-headedly (as well as hard-heartedly) devoted to the pet doctrines of their particular faction. But, of course, non-Christians will likely find de Vaca's account even more provocative. This is one of the more politically incorrect but utterly worthwhile books I have ever read. Along with an unforgettable tale of survival, there's faith healing, a resurrection, and even an account of a native tribe that practices homosexual marriage. Perhaps foremost among those who were most astonished by the miracles he wrought was de Vaca himself. But for the fact that he survived to tell it, de Vaca's story is so extraordinary most would find it impossible to believe.

4 out of 5 stars Why isn't Cabeza de Vaca better-known among Christians?.......2002-11-09

I asked myself that question after I finished re-reading this book recently. Part of the answer may be that it has something to embarass Christians of every stripe.

For Catholics, we have a group of laymen doing miracle healings through prayer, and more to the point, they did so even though they had no contact with a priest for 6+ years.

For Protestants who believe that signs and wonders ceased with the Apostles, the miracle healings are again an embarassment. For Pentacostals, we have them being done by Catholics, at a time (circa 1530) when Catholicism was probably at its absolute rottenest.

And most disturbingly, for those who assure others that God will bail us out materially when we enter into hard times, we have the spectacle of a distinguised nobleman soldier who ends up becoming the naked slave of the poorest Indians on the Texas coast, from whom he escapes only by undertaking a journey on which he is constantly on the verge of dying from cold, starvation, and thirst.

As a Protestant missionary, this last aspect is the most instructive. As much as we like to tell people that God will indeed bail them out, we have to remember that we are indeed His creatures, and that His kingdom may well be advanced best by stripping us of all we have and sending us naked into the brush for 6 years to do His work. Personally, I find that reality much more believable than the claim that God wants us all to be materially prosperous.

I might also note that those who believe that America was a paradise bbefore the White Man will get a real jolt from Cabeza de Vaca's description of warfare, slavery, and infanticide among Indians.

So buy this book--it's almost certain to offend you somehow!

        Book Description

Narrow Road to the Deep North is the extraordinary story of a young woman's experiences among Athabascan Indians in the interior of Alaska. A poet recently returned from the salons of Paris, the author takes a job teaching in a remote region of Alaska. As she comes to know the region and its peoples-and learns to see the visible and invisible world around her-she finds herself more and more the student rather than the teacher.

Her teachers are the native people of the region, especially a woman named Malfa Ivanov, who becomes her guide into the country. Her advice: "Pay attention to what things do in our country, not what they are called in yours." As the author learns to pay attention to the world around her, she finds that the land itself holds a world of spirits and dreams.

A true story on an epic scale, charged with a unique, informed intelligence and told with a relentless realism that portrays Alaska and its people without romanticizing them, this is the moving story of a woman's path to knowledge in a remote, austere land.

Katherine McNamara is the publisher ofArchipelago, an online literary journal. Her poetry and nonfiction have been widely published in journals and reviews. She lives in Virginia.

"I wanted to learn this: how I could tell a story and tell truth" With those words poet and teacher Katherine McNamara joins her voice with those who are called to experience and ponder the sacred in an information driven age.

Trained in Paris during the glory days of structural anthropology, McNamara set out in the mid 1970's to find her own "pensee sauvage" in Alaska. The great land responded by inviting her into a world which while more materially primitive than Paris displayed a far more profound emotional intelligence. In Alaska she found love, death, mystery, the great attention to the ordinary which is both the poet's burden and her gift. She saw literary culture bump heads against an older kind of storytelling, the kind of stories which teach us how to be human, the sacred stories, Akhmatova and Mandelstam stories. She writes courageously about her own lack of understanding. She wonders why we ourselves live in a culture too "advanced" to trust the ancient wisdom of dreams.

A Narrow Road to the Deep North is a profound celebration of earth sacredness. We stand at a crossroads where we will either understand that the animals, the earth and ourselves to be a single organism, or we will drown in the toxic oil spill of technology and greed. That is the great tension in Alaska, both when McNamara lived there and today, when the Bush Administration wants to rip up the fragile tundra.

But Narrow Road is no polemic. It is first and foremost a work of poetry. Thanks to the author for the care and courage to share it with us.
