Book Description

For everyone who craves a simpler lifestyle, not only in how they live but also where they live, The Simple Home features 21 houses and presents six different approaches to creating a home that realizes its full potential both simply and elegantly.

We are living in complex times, in a commodified, virtual, and overstimulated culture. One response to high levels of complexity and overstimulation is to look for yet another gadget or closet organizer to simplify our lives. But the answer lies somewhere else. The road to a simpler more satisfying life begins with a clear-eyed examination of the choices we are making for our time--and that includes choices about where we want to live.

The Simple Home presents six paths to simplicity, each illustrated by human-scaled, unadorned homes with straightforward floor plans and forms. These are open, light-filled homes (with rooms or spaces that are often multipurpose) that express their beauty in their utility and practicality. Simple homes are low maintenance and often green, designed for homeowners who wish to embody a different set of values in their housing choices than the run-of-the-mill starter castles littering the landscape.

The 6 Paths to Simplicity:
    1. Simple is Enough
    2. Simple is Thrifty
    3. Simple is Flexible
    4. Simple is Timeless
    5. Simple is Sustainable
    6. Simple is Refined

5 out of 5 stars Houses that live large for their owners.......2007-08-17

Wonderful case studies about 20 homes with good explanations about material choices, site considerations, and the people who own them. It's a Taunton Press book, so the photos are great, of course. I especially like the floor plan illustrations that support the photos and give a sense of flow through the houses.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-opening book.......2007-08-04

This book is amazing! The pictures are great, and so well coordinated with the text that the reader can truly "see" each house. For anyone dreaming of a second home, or a more efficient first home, this is an ideal volume.

5 out of 5 stars Defines the concept of a 'simple home' .......2007-07-08

Sarah Nettleton's THE SIMPLE HOME: THE LUXURY OF ENOUGH defines the concept of a 'simple home' and offers interior design tips to achieving satisfaction from a basic home design. This involves eliminating non-essentials and practicing restraint: six avenues to achieving a 'greener' lifestyle from this approach blends full-page color photos with comments on designs which refine and simplify the home - perfect for new students of interior design and homeowners contemplating reconstruction.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-05-14

Wonderful pictures! This book has so many great stories of the home and how people really make their houses simple and comfortable.

1 out of 5 stars Hmmm?.......2007-05-12

My copy came with many scratches on the dust cover and a broken binding when I opened the book. As far as the contents...I was expecting more of a layman friendly simple life-style type approach. Instead I felt like I was buying a book a self-contractor could use. My perusal indicated more about architecture as opposed to simplifying home content. Not a happy camper with this book. I returned it.

Book Description

Butlers & Household Managers, 21st Century Professionals is designed to assist those seeking a new and rewarding career as a butler or the American equivalent, the household manager, as well as those seeking to employ them, whether in stately home, hotel, corporate setting or elsewhere. In the increasingly competitive and mechanistic world in which we live, service is often the only differentiator between one provider and another. Having a competent butler is one way to develop that much-needed edge.

Butlers & Household Managers, 21st Century Professionals is also useful for any man or woman who would like to use some of the butler's know-how to enhance his or her own life style.

The many checklists in Butlers & Household Managers, 21st Century Professionals cover every kind of situation a butler deals with and are designed, in conjunction with the chapter they supplement, to walk a person successfully through those situations and so increase his or her confidence. No amount of copying actions mechanically will make a butler, however. It is necessary to understand the point of view of the butler to then handle any given situation as a butler would. That is why chapters are provided to explain the butler rationale.

5 out of 5 stars The most informative and concise book for this topic ever.......2006-06-22

I loved this book and still refer to in occasionally. I wish more books were written by him and perhaps in a memoir tone so it could be an entertaining version of this one. I've read others that are "behind the scenes" and was quite put off with the arrogance of them. Big accolades to Steven Ferry for writing a practical and inspiring book, I only wish there were more from him!

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to be a butler to love this book!.......2005-09-24

I am NOT a butler, but I sought this book out on the internet and finally purchased it after thinking I could use it for many years. I was NOT disappointed. It is the best self-help book on the market! This book can help you organize your life on nearly every level. It is an organizers dream book for most of us who have to live without at butler. Yes, I am still in the process of becoming a good household manager, but now I have the advice and skills of my "guide book man".

5 out of 5 stars Simply The Best!.......2004-10-02

If you are involved in the world of private service, I highly recommend this book as a "must have." Mr. Ferry has gone to great lengths to get it right and the results are contained within the pages of this book.
Mr. Ferry presents us with a history of Butling (and other private service household positions,) and weaves a rich tapestry of service standards, duties, do's and don'ts, professional expectations and numerous other pieces of valuable advice throughout the book.
If you do not have this wonderful resource in your collection my advice is to get it and use it.

Book Description

In the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, Scott Ritter's War on Iraq was embraced by the antiwar movement in America even though his claims that Iraq had been effectively disarmed were ignored by both the Bush administration and the mainstream media. In the wake of the debacle, Ritter has been vindicated. Now Ritter, a former United Nations weapons inspector, has set his sights on the White House's hyping of Iran's alleged nuclear weapons program. In Target Iran he once again sets the record straight.

This book offers Ritter's “national intelligence assessment” of the Iranian imbroglio. He examines the Bush administration's regime-change policy and the potential of Iran to threaten U.S. national security interests. The author also considers how the country is seen by other interested parties, including the United Kingdom (Tony Blair may once again be called upon by Bush to provide an international “cover” in any confrontation), Israel (the Israelis view Iran as their number one threat today), and the International Atomic Energy Agency (responsible for inspecting the alleged nuclear program).

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The story still goes on!.......2007-08-29

This book has many merits and is surely the best you can find if you are looking for a good overview of the Iranian nuclear issue up to the end of 2006. Included is the critical role of Israel, the US policy toward Tehran, the IAEA efforts (and some of its techniques) and many more. The problem is that the story is still going on and none knows how (and when) it will end. Thus I think it's rather premature to buy a book only for a synopsis of the US-Israel-Iran crisis, while new developments happen nearly every day. Mr Scott has also no comments on the possible "military solutions" (except a few lines stating that they will be catastrophic as a choice), something that I found disappointing to say the least.

4 out of 5 stars A must read.......2007-06-10

The subject matter is of increasing importance for Americans and the world. Mr. Ritter once again lays open the myths that surround another nation that is very misunderstood by the U.S. government and the people. As the U.S. moves closer and closer to a possible confrontation with Iran this book becomes increasingly important for Americans to be able to equip themselves with the facts so they can see through the rhetoric that is put forth by an increasingly hostile administration.

It is essential that we are not caught ignorant once again while this administration leads this country into another blunder in the Middle East. Mr. Ritter does an excellent job laying out what the international community has done to confront Iran's intransigence, and how the U.S. has hindered and complicated matters behind the scenes and publicly. His message once again seems prescient hopefully this time his warnings will be heeded, but the only way that will happen is if American's acquaint themselves with the facts so they won't succumb to the fear tactics yet again.

The main criticisms I have with this book is its choppy narrative and the lack of sources noted. The narrative seems to bounce around a lot which can be a little confusing at times. The lack of noting his sources becomes problematic when discussing the book or the issue because you can't point to Mr. Ritter's source and say that's where he gets his information. Mr. Ritter's earlier works gives him the credibility needed to pull this off, but for those that are die hard interventionists it would have helped to be able to see the sources.

These are the reasons I could not give this book five stars, but the importance of the subject makes this book a must read. I would certainly recommend this book to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Different nation, same US Foreign policy: Regime change.......2007-05-23

Just a few points to consider:
1. Iran was determined to have Nuclear capability by 2006.
2. Ahmadinejad is all bark, and no bite (literally, since he doesn't control Iran's nuclear forces and is NOT the man with the ultimate power in Iran, whic resides in the hands of Khamenie who has declared that the use of atomic bombs under any circumstances is not legitimate under Islam).

The book is well written and not only tells you about the politics involved, but also the technology of developing nuclear capability. The chapters are very long, and I noticed atleast twice that the publisher printed "Iraq" when the author meant to say "Iran" (see top of page 200)

More pics/maps would have been nice.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but read the conclusion first........2007-02-09

READ THE CONCLUSION AND POSTSCRIPT FIRST.
This is a very important book. Based on its rank in Amazon sales (in the 4000s or so), it's being purchased by quite a few people.
But there are only ten (ten) Amazon reviews. Only ten reviews of a book that gives authoritative, on-the-ground facts about Iran's nuclear capabilities.
Why so few Amazon reviews? Here's our guess. Readers get totally bogged down in the minutiae of weapons inspection, of Mossad spy disinformation, of EU vacillation, of the UN teetering on a Security Council resolution . . ..
But who reads the entire book? It's a total drudge read until you get to the CONCLUSION and POSTSCRIPT on pages 197-219. Those 22 pages tell the whole story.
We strongly recommend that you read these pages first. After you read the Conclusion and Postscript, then go back and read the knowledgeable detail in the first 196 pages. This is a great book, showing what's actually gone on, step by step, in the inspections done by Mohammed EI Baradei, IAEA Director, and his team.
The Iranians are nowhere close to having nuclear capabilities.
This is the conclusion of Scott Ritter, one of the men who took part in the Iraqi inspections, announced that Saddam had NO "weapons of mass destruction," and was completely ignored by a war-hungry Bush administration. And Scott Ritter was completely right. We went to war with Iraq for NO REASON AT ALL.
So, read the conclusion and the postscript first. Here he says with admirable clarity what others are saying--including Stephen Walt and John Mearsherimer (book forthcoming), James Petras, and Jimmy Carter.
We need to take back our country.
Israel and America are two separate countries. Iran is no danger to the US. It's Israel's problem (if it is a threat, which evidently it is not), but, as Ritter says, "Once again [as in Iraq], the world finds itself on the brink of another Middle East war in which the United States is using trumped-up charges centered around false threats of weapons of mass destruction. . ." ( p, 201) As Ritter shows, all these false threats are being orchestrated by Israel and its friends in the United States.
Israel itself has a formidable nuclear arsenal, uninspected by anybody--IAEA in particular. And they are not even members of the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty).
Ritter acknowledges Israel's feelings of paranoia, but points out that in this case those feelings will lead to its own destruction.
And what about the United States? What could be the outcome for the US of such a war? This is the most disturbing part of the book. Anyone who is familiar with the location of Iran knows that they are strategically placed to stop the flow of a great deal of the oil that reaches the West. Result? Our economy would grind to a miserable slowdown when the price of oil goes to $150-200 a barrel. Other results, equally horrifying, are described by Ritter.
Scott Ritter is a patriot who knows what he is talking about. He has all the credentials to be credible. We had better listen to him.
We'd better listen to him soon.
The word is out that an attack is being planned for this spring. Let's hope it's not true.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!!.......2007-02-08

While the country debates the troop "surge" the administration and its Israeli "Ally" plan the next war right under our noses. Too bad there is such little discussion of this in the mainstream press.

Ritter's book is well written and authoratative.

    Book Description

The work of Seattle-based architect Tom Kundig has been called both raw and refined, as well as super-crafted and warm. Kundig’s projects, especially his houses, uniquely combine these two seemingly disparate sets of characteristics to produce some of the most inventive structures found in the architecture world today. Kundig’s internationally acclaimed work is inspired by both industrial structures with which he grew up in the Pacific Northwest and the vibrant craft cultures that are fostered there. His buildings uniquely meld industrial sensibilities and materials such as corten steel and concrete with an intuitive understanding of scale.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lots of content.......2007-02-11

I own many books dedicated to a single architects work. Often times these type of books display two or three rooms of a house and never get into the nitty gritty of a project. "Tom Kundig: Houses" is different. This book leaves little to the imagination, offering sometimes up to 15-20 pages to a single project. The pictures are very clear and tell a lot about the concept of a house as a whole. The only knock I'd say is that every project is so similar to the next that it becomes hard to differentiate. But if you admire his style, that shouldn't be much of a problem.

Every architect dreams of a perfect client, and every client dreams of a perfect architect. Alas, these relationships don't always work out to everyone’s expectations. But when they do—when there are shared ideas and the communication flows—the results can be spectacular. The New Modern House features forty new buildings where the synergy between the right designer and the right client resulted in works that surpass everyone's expectations.

The book is divided into five thematic chapters—conditions, materials, environment, budget, and aesthetics—and each contain eight case studies. These include Rafael Viñoly's Piano House in New York; Sean Godsell's Peninsula House in Australia; and Ahadu Abaineh's Tree House in Ethiopia, among others.

Beautifully produced, The New Modern House captures these noteworthy designs with a wealth of color photography, plans, and drawings, and makes an ideal book for anybody dreaming of the perfect house.

3 out of 5 stars Very pretty to look at, but practical?.......2007-07-18

I was somewhat disappointed as a current homeowner and builder of a new contemporary home, I (like many people) was trying to get ideas. This is more of a text book for architecture students, showing them the far reaches of art. Very little ideas could be had as far as conceptually and practicly speaking...

Mr. Jones really needs to give his photographer a bonus because his images really make this book, not that the text is not well thought and out and researched. Most of these homes are just spectucular, I love the use of glass, steel, and rich woods, it's so clean and elegant. You really come away with a new appreciation of current architectural styles as you puruse this wonderful book. Frankly, I could not live in many of these homes, but all of them radiate beauty and inovation. Highly recommended, if for no other reason than to get some ideas for your own home, uh, but you better have some stock in Apple.

Contemporary and very different modern designs by top designers and firms are the profile of Will Jones' The New Modern House, which packs in color photos of all kinds of structures, from seaside homes to complex, multifaceted layouts for flat landscapes. Accompanying discussions survey architectural intentions and design options, but it's the photos which capture attention.

    Book Description

Built like a piece of fine furniture, the traditional Japanese house is universally admired for its clean lines, intricate joinery, and unparalleled woodworking. Focusing primarily on a new guesthouse in California, this elegant volume shows how a classic Japanese house can be built to offer the warmth and comfort that modern homemakers require.

Len Brackett, rigorously trained as a temple carpenter in Kyoto, has spent decades adapting the ancient Japanese design aesthetic to Western needs. Here he demonstrates step-by-step how both the traditional live-on-the-floor house, as well as models that accommodate furniture, can be constructed to provide such modern essentials as central heating, insulation, computerized lighting systems, and the latest electronics. This practical and inspiring guide-with gorgeous, clear photos and diagrams-is an indispensable resource for those who'd like to live in a Japanese home, for professionals who want to build them, and for any reader who delights in Japan's age-old aesthetic traditions.

A core addition to any professional or academic library Architectural Studies reference collection, Building The Japanese House Today is very highly recommended for non-specialist general readers searching for a knowledgeable and "user-friendly" study of domestic Japanese architecture.

5 out of 5 stars Informative Guide! (Adds a touch of logistical reality to creating a dream home).......2006-02-26

For anyone who has dreamed of building a Japanese style house, this book is a must! The book takes you through the construction of a building from start to finish. All the things the customers and builders had to consider in construction. (From design, to permits, to materials,to assembly and finally finishing) This is a good way to get an idea of what building a traditional or westernized version of a Japanese house would entail, in terms of time and resources. It would also provide a neat book for house design to see the way traditional Japanese design styles have been incorporated to fit into American style homes.

One of the authors, Len Brackett, is the owner of East Wind which does Traditional Japanese Architecture and Woodworking. The beautiful woodwork this company does is extraordinary!! Len spent more than 5 years in Japan as a temple carpentry apprentice. The book also included an interesting chapter describing him time there. For more information on East Wind, (and to get a better idea of what the book describes) try visiting their website eastwindinc.com

    Book Description

In The Way to Win, two of the country’s most accomplished political reporters explain what separates the victors from the victims in the unforgiving environment of modern presidential campaigns.

Mark Halperin, political director of ABC News, and John F. Harris, the national politics editor of The Washington Post, tell the story of how two families–the Bushes and the Clintons–have held the White House for nearly a generation and examine Hillary Clinton’s prospects for extending this record in 2008. Based on years of research, including private campaign memos and White House communications, The Way to Win reveals the surprising details of how the Bushes and Clintons have closely studied each the other’s successes and failures and used these lessons to shape their own strategies for winning elections and wielding power.

In the case of George W. Bush, the strategic genius is Karl C. Rove, arguably the most influential White House aide in history. For the first time, Halperin and Harris cut through the myths and controversies surrounding Rove to illuminate in brilliant, behind-the-scenes detail what he actually does–his Trade Secrets for winning elections.

In the case of the Clintons, the chief strategist is Bill Clinton himself. Drawing on their fifteen years reporting on and interviewing him, Halperin and Harris deconstruct and decipher the Clinton style, identifying the methods that all candidates can use in their pursuit of the White House.

The Way to Win takes a lively and irreverent approach, but Halperin and Harris also show the disturbing ways that American politics has become a Freak Show–their name for a political culture that provides incentives for candidates, activists, interest groups, and the news media to emphasize ideological extremism and personal attack. For the first time, Halperin and Harris describe how Freak Show campaigns orchestrated by the likes of Internet pioneer Matt Drudge forced Al Gore and John Kerry to lose control of their public images (with considerable help from the candidates’ own ineptitude) and lose the White House.

On the brink of what will be one of the most intense, most exciting presidential elections in American history, The Way to Win is the book that armchair political junkies have been waiting for. Filled with peerless analysis and eye-opening revelations from the trenches, it is a must read for everyone who follows American politics.

5 out of 5 stars Great book - politics today, like it or not (hope you don't).......2007-08-06

For one who lives outside the US, here's a book that makes you dive head-first into how US politics are done today. Will these techniques spread to other countries? With a few adjustments, they most probably will.
Learning about how Kerry's announcement was shrinked to a short novel about his hairdo sure makes you laugh (c'mon, let's have have some sense of humor...) as it also makes you think about the future of Democracy... and about its essence. In the end, hasn't it always been about emotional appeals, abotu the small stuff that makes each voter tilt left or right?

4 out of 5 stars Good for political junkies; some of their 2008 predictions already rendered irrelevant.......2007-07-10

As well-stated by others here, "Way to Win" is 'geeky' and 'for political junkies.' If you're looking for the type of delectable, fascinating 'inside the bus' reporting that is found, for example, in Newsweek's traditionally superb post-election special, well, here is not the place. While authors Mark Halperin and John F. Harris are definitely capable of that oeuvre, here they've produced a more analytical body of work analyzing what has made Clinton (both of them), Bush (43) and Karl Rove successful. Moreover, we're also shown what made Kerry and Gore unsuccessful.

What strikes me is the non-partisan stance of the book - the authors have lots of very positive statements about each of the four main protagonists (the Clintons being one successful pair, and Bush/Rove the other). It says a lot about the authors' ability to dispense dispassionate judgment that they're able to offer readers extensive, constructive looks at Hillary Clinton and Karl Rove without tipping their hands to feeling the least bit of antipathy towards one or the other. That's quite an achievement.

Despite all that, what strikes you at the very end of the book is how much of the book's conclusions have already been rendered irrelevant:

    - John McCain is held up as the candidate who should fare best, given his mastery of the book's "trade secrets." [Right now, this looks like a major 'oops' - as I write this McCain has just made dramatic cuts to his staff and has only a small amount of funds in the bank.]

    - Mark Warner and George Allen are touted as looking good for 2008. 'Oops' and 'Yikes!'

    - Candidates and fundraising heavyweights Mitt Romney and Barrack Obama are nowhere to be seen.

    - Rudy Guiliani merits brief attention, but only as an erstwhile senatorial candidate against Hillary in 2000.

Of course, much of that stuff is extraordinarily difficult to predict. It's more an indication of the "strangely fluid political times" (as Fortune aptly pegged it in a recent cover story) than of Halperin & Harris' prognosticating capabilities.

2 out of 5 stars Was the Title "Tips We Hope Will Help Hillary Win in 2008"?.......2007-03-24

I am a political junkie, so it never hurts to do a bit of opposition research. I hoped that this would be a balanced look at the climate surrounding the 2008 election. The authors acknowledge the power of the new media. However, they seem to lament the rise of a counter balance to the liberal ABC, NBC, CBS established media. They somehow label conservative media options as "Freak Show". While forged documents, Koran flushing, missing weapons story being held for final weekend, seem to escape the "Freak Show" label. What the authors need to understand is that the new media has risen because the old media has not done a balanced job for many years.
Secondly, there are just way too many rules layed out in this book. The bottom line is that Bill Clinton connected with regular people better than Bush the first or Dole. Likewise, GW has the ability to connect with regular people far better than the stiff, rigid, aloof candidates like Gore and Kerry.
The problem I see for Hillary in '08 is that she lacks the "it" that Clinton and GW have. She comes off as cold and calculating rather than a real person. Throw all the rules out. Our next president will be someone who normal people feel they can identify with.

5 out of 5 stars Great Analysis of the Past Elections, but 2008's Another Story.......2007-03-21

A most interesting book in that two astute observers of the American political scene make comments on the upcoming 2008 election. It does promise to be an interesting election. As usual, to win the Democratic primary you have to appeal to the hard core left wing - something both Hillary and Obama do. On the other hand, traditionally you have to go pretty far right to win the Republican primary, but neither MaCain nor Giuliani have done so.

Then after going far out on the wing, you have to come back to the center in order to win the election, because the country is positioned at neither wing. Hillary and Obama have a long way to go to get to the center.

The logic presented in this book is fascinating. But it's early in the political silly season. There's room for lots of surprises. This is a jolly good read (or listen in the case of the CD's), just don't take it too seriosly at this early stage. It's a lot about what happened in the past. But it's a new election.

3 out of 5 stars For Political Geeks Only.......2007-03-18

As my title says, The Way to Win: Taking the White House in 2008 is mainly a book for political junkies. It delves into the politics of the Clintons and The Bushes, who have dominated the political scene for a generation, having elected presidents 41-43, and the author suspects possibly #44.

The book goes into a history of Clinton's two campaigns for president, the tactics that he used to beat both Georg H.W. Bush and Bob Dole. It also does a decent job of covering the two controversial elections that George W. Bush won by "polarizing" the electorate.

I liked some of the behind the scenes goodies that this book gives you, including an encounter that is mentioned between Bill Clinton and Karl Rove where Bill Clinton congratulates him for how he beat John F. Kerry in 2004.

The book is definitely cynical of what is called "the new media," mainly Matt Drudge and his Drudge Report. While some of this is interesting, the book sometimes finds itself slowed to a hault when describing Drudge and, in parts, Karl Rove. These pages seem to go on and on, and often without much relevance to winning elections.

You should also be aware (not beware) that Halperin goes into great detail about the legislative agenda and how it was won or lost. One of my favorite sections is how Clinton somehow won the fight and got out in front of the Republicans on the issue of Welfare reform using Dick Morris's famous "triangulation" technique.

Despite its slow sections, this book is definitely worth the read for people like me: political geeks who can't get enough of "Meet The Press" & C-Span. Good stuff!

      Book Description

Each year the pristine beaches, lush pine forests, and picturesque New England towns of Martha's Vineyard draw tens of thousands of admirers to one of our country's most beautiful islands. Some of these visitors have become part-time residents, building contemporary homes alongside the traditional Victorian cottages, sea captains' mansions, and colonial farmhouses that comprise the island's cultural and architectural heritage. Rarely does one find such a concentration of outstanding contemporary designs that complement, rather than overwhelm, the diverse ecology and history of this unique place.

The Houses of Martha's Vineyard presents twenty-four Vineyard homes, built in the past twenty years, by internationally renowned architects, among them Robert A. M. Stern, Steven Holl, and the Polshek Partnership, and emerging practitioners who have produced some of their best work on Martha's Vineyard. Stylistically diverse, the houses featured in this book offer environmentally sensitive designs and innovative solutions that respond to, but do not mimic, the island's rich architectural past.

Glorious color photographs, detailed architectural plans, and project descriptions document the challenges and solutions reached by each architectural firm. Complementing the visual material is an introductory essay by architect Keith Moskow, which sets the historical and architectural context for these gracious new homes.

      Book Description

Building small can be a sign of higher ambitions, and those who take the time to peruse these pages will undoubtedly grow to appreciate that creating a small home can be an amazingly positive and creative act, one which can enhance life in surprising ways. The Very Small Home presents stunning design advances in Japan. Eighteen recent houses, from ultramodern to Japanese rustic, are explored in depth. Particular emphasis is given to what the author call the Big Idea-the overarching concept that does the most to make the house feel more spacious than it actually is. Among the Big Ideas introduced here are ingenious sources of natural light, well-thought-out atriums, snug but functional kitchens, unobtrusive partitions, and free-flowing circulation paths. An introduction by the author puts the house designs in the context of lifestyle trends, and highlights their shared characteristics. For each project, the intentions of the designers and occupants are examined. The result is a very human sensibility that runs through the book. A glimpse of the dreams and aspirations that these unique homes represent and that belies their apparent modesty. The second half of the book is devoted to illustrating the special features in the homes, from clever storage and kitchen designs, to ingenious skylights and nooks. As with his earlier Small Spaces, Azby Brown has given home owners, designers, and architects a fascinating new collection of thought-provoking ideas.

2 out of 5 stars 1700sqft are BIG and luxurious in Hong Kong.......2007-04-18

"Small" is a matter of perspective, especially if you live in a 700sqft apartment and expect to get some ideas to use in small 300-450sqft apartments on Hong Kong Island.

2 out of 5 stars It's ok but not to Canadian code.......2007-04-04

The book is full of ideas but most not really practical when it comes to code and fire safety issues in canada. I was expecting more out of this book.......... slightly dissapointing.

      4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-14

Japanese design is different to Western design in terms of living requirements.

I now have a much deeper understanding of the creation of small living spaces that work well rather than building bigger for re-sale or convention.

Hopefully, my own home (when built) will be an east-west fusion that I will enjoy for a long time.

This book is part of my collection on 'small home' design and one which I return to when I need to remind myself about scaling down.
