Book Description

The Parthenon Code reveals, for the first time in 2,000 years, the meaning of the seven sculptural themes on Athena's temple. A simple, but hidden artists' code expressed on vase-paintings and the Parthenon sculptures, leads to the astonishing truth that Greek myth/art chronicles in great detail the reestablishment of the way of Kain (Cain) after the Flood.

1 out of 5 stars pressing issues.......2007-02-28

When I hear my university colleagues condemn vanity presses, I often object, and I do so because of books like The Parthenon Code. Surely hobbyists such as Mr Johnson deserve an avenue for presenting their work to the public. The rigorous review to which juried publications are subjected demands, perhaps, an unnecessarily burdensome familiarity with scholarship in the appropriate fields of study, to say nothing of a career's worth of work in the academy and environs. My only regret for this book is that Mr Johnson has not yet quite mastered the conventions of scholarly discourse, where -- in the words of the great Dorothy L Sayers -- "a bland and deadly courtesy is more devastating" than rudely deriding the works of scholars who have devoted their lives to the formal study, teaching, and illumination of, in this case, the classics and the Bible.

5 out of 5 stars Pandora deified..........2006-12-19

There are over 600 flood legends...almost every culture/civilization on the globe has passed down an oral and/or written history about a global flood. Indeed, the only way to fossilize anything is rapid burial underneath sediment and water (how else can one explain millions of fossils around the world) and what of seashells on tops of mountains...etc.

A Christian should not sneer at the idea of others in his faith who accept the authenticity of the very first book of the Bible. Scientific evidence points towards a young earth, as opposed to an old earth, and basic mathematics limits man's existence to a few thousand years, not millions. Indeed, even secular scientists affirm that all of manking descends from ONE woman (mitochondrial DNA). Could that woman be Eve? I think so, but others are welcome to draw their own conclusions.

As for the Book itself, it is a very interesting read. Like the author, however, I wish there were more primary sources fully delineating the meaning and the origins of the Parthenon. I think that Mr. Johnson has made a huge contribution to the study of the ancient world, in that he has posited a unique thesis regarding ancient Greece's greatest monument. While I am disposed to embrace his interpretations--due to my own literal interpretation of Genesis, I fear that the lack of primary sources (from ancient Athenians) may limit his book's influence.

Nevertheless, my imagination was very much excited by this writing, and plan to visit Nashville's Parthenon in March 2007.

4 out of 5 stars Quick, fascinating, plausible and memorable value........2006-04-11

I finished reading this book this week, liked the way the material was presented and particularly appreciated the use of many original sources. I found Johnson's thesis generated many connections for me. For instance, his original reference to Cain as the lame god Hephaistos, cast down from Olympus made me think how, in a very real sense, Cain was crippled by the mark placed upon him by God, concerning which he was surely downcast. Further, it particularly made me appreciate the correlative work of Christ in making the lame to walk.
I thought this work plausible and obvious in that forehead slapping way and regretted that classical mythology has no place in evangelical academia.
In the end, one is left wondering why, if the Hesperides' Garden/Eden was the idyllic original habitat of man, but the actions of Hera/Eve resulted in its forfeiture and estrangement from Deity, how then, was the Enlightening a boon to man?
It interests me that all of mankind, by hook or by Shepherd's crook, seeks a return to Paradise, but must content itself with knowledge, since the natural man is very far from Eden indeed. As Robert Johnson rightly said, on the journey home one must pass through a bloody field east of Eden.
This is a wonderful and provocative book and I would be very interested to read anything else he writes.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-11-04

The Greeks traced their ancestry back to a first couple in an ancient paradise they called the Garden of the Hesperides, always depicted on vases with a serpent-entwined apple tree. Sound familiar? This first couple, Zeus and Hera, were brother and sister, and husband and wife, just like Adam and Eve. They also had two sons who had offspring, just like Adam and Eve. Their sons, Hephaistos and Ares, correspond to Kain (the author uses the Greek spelling for reasons he makes clear) and Abel. It's so amazing and so simple once you see it. Greek artists tell the same story as Genesis except from the opposite standpoint that the serpent enlightened the first couple, rather than deluding them, in paradise.

Nereus of Greek "myth" (whose name means the "Wet One") is Noah. There's no doubt about it. You can check the author's overwhelming evidence for yourself. Herakles is Nimrod transplanted to Greek soil. Hermes is Cush. Chiron is Ham.

I commend the author for shining light on truth that's been there in the dark all along. THE PARTHENON CODE is a very well-written book with great depth, and many ancient illustrations confirming the author's thesis. He has cracked a genuine ancient artists' code. The big question in my mind is, Why have the academics for so long been so blind to the obvious?

Kari Joys, Author of "Choosing Light-Heartedness"

5 out of 5 stars A Genuine Ancient Artists' Code Deciphered.......2005-04-15

The Greeks summarized who they were, where they came from, and what they believed on the east pediment of the Parthenon. In the last hundred pages of the book, Mr. Johnson takes the reader through the computer reconstruction of the figures there based on the physical evidence, one extant sculpture at a time. Holmes Bryant's computer reconstructions are magnificent (Click on "Search Inside" "Back Cover" to see his reconstruction of the Three Fates from the left side of the pediment, and click on "Front Cover" to see the Hesperides from the right side).
Reading those hundred pages gave me the same feeling as putting together a jigsaw puzzle. The author supplies all the pieces of the puzzle so you can evaluate his reconstruction for yourself. When you have finished THE PARTHENON CODE, you will understand what the Greeks were telling us in their myth/art, and on the sculptures of Athena's magnificent temple. Mr. Johnson has deciphered a genuine ancient artists' code.

    Book Description

Cytopathology of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors provides the practicing pathologist with a single reference for describing and illustrating the cytologic features of musculoskeletal tumors. Using fine-needle aspiration (FNA), the approach of this work is encyclopedic: both relatively common and relatively rare lesions are depicted. It is expected that Cytopathology of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors will serve to widen the usage of the FNA technique which can: substantially decrease patient morbidity; lessen the complications that arise due to other biopsy techniques; and shorten the time as well as expense required for diagnosis. The chapters on soft tissue lesions are organized by direction of differentiation. Each chapter documents both the common and uncommon lesions within the tissue group. Summaries of clinical findings are given along with the histopathologic and cytologic description. Key diagnostic points (in tabular form) and a discussion of the differential diagnosis complete each section. The section on skeletal lesions is organized along predominant cell type seen in smears. This approach facilitates grouping of lesions into diagnostically useful categories, allowing the pathologist faced with an unfamiliar lesion to rapidly access the portion of the text most useful for differential diagnosis. Within each chapter, the organization is similar to that within the soft tissue chapters. The introduction discusses technical concerns, limitations of the technique, and a diagnostic approach in both tabular and narrative form. Information on grading of soft tissue sarcomas completes the introduction.

      Book Description

This volume offers an overview of the Parthenon from antiquity to the modern era. Recent discoveries, such as the marble sculpture fragments found during the current restoration work on the Acropolis, or a vase excavated in Northern Greece whose decoration echoes a lost pedimental composition, have forced scholars to reconsider many aspects of one of the most important monuments of classical antiquity. Bringing together essays on various aspects of this world-renowned temple, this book examines the dramatic setting of the temple and its impact on modern architects such as Le Corbusier; new reconstructions and interpretations of Pheidias’ vast sculptural program; in-depth analysis of architectural refinements; the techniques employed in making the colossal gold-and-ivory cult statue; and a consideration of the Christian and Muslim phases of the Parthenon’s history. Collectively, they enhance our understanding of one of the icons of Western art.

      Book Description

Oscar Wilde compared it to a white goddess, Evelyn Waugh to Stilton cheese. In observers from Lord Byron to Sigmund Freud to Virginia Woolf it met with astonishment, rapture, poetry, even tears--and, always, recognition. Twenty-five hundred years after it first rose above Athens, the Parthenon remains one of the wonders of the world, its beginnings and strange turns of fortune over millennia a perpetual source of curiosity, controversy, and intrigue.

At once an entrancing cultural history and a congenial guide for tourists, armchair travelers, and amateur archaeologists alike, this book conducts readers through the storied past and towering presence of the most famous building in the world. Who built the Parthenon, and for what purpose? How are we to understand its sculpture? Why is it such a compelling monument? The classicist and historian Mary Beard takes us back to the fifth century B.C. to consider the Parthenon in its original guise--as the flagship temple of imperial Athens, housing an enormous gold and ivory statue of the city's patron goddess attended by an enigmatic assembly of sculptures. Just as fascinating is the monument's far longer life as cathedral church of Our Lady of Athens, as "the finest mosque in the world," and, finally, as an inspirational ruin and icon. Beard also takes a cool look at the bitter arguments that continue to surround the "Elgin Marbles," the sculptures from the Parthenon now in the British Museum. Her book constitutes the ultimate tour of the marvelous history and present state of this glory of the Acropolis, and of the world.

A spendid book that can be easily read in an afternoon. Covers the topic fully and moves along as it does.

5 out of 5 stars A book for the ages.......2005-06-23

This is an exhaustive, fabulous treatise on one of the most venerable monuments to classical history the world has ever known. Beard takes us through the entire history of the Parthenon. She details for us its probable early use as a temple to Athena (as well as some other theories) as well as its less known utility as a Christian church and Mosque in later ages.

Along the way, Beard offers us statements concerning the Parthenon from various historical and modern personages. Some are profound, some are not. Some simply advertise their ignorance (such as the not-so-venerable Shaquille O'Neal). From the vantage points of different epochs we are able to discern how the Parthenon has been seen down through the ages.

Of course, no work on the Parthenon would be complete without examining the highly(!) controversial exploits of one Lord Elgin. As hoped, Beard delivers in giving a thorough description of all the forces at play in both England & Greece. She does not take a position on the issue, so her discussion of this sensitive topic is not apt to offend anyone. Then again, since she refrains from taking a position, perhaps that in itself WILL offend some people? I don't know.

There is also a background section on the disastrous explosion of 1687. It was caused by the Ottoman Empire using (mis-using!) the Parthenon as an arsenal. Not suprisingly, this made it a target for the Venetians and.....you can guess the rest. What is less known is that 300 people perished when the Parthenon exploded. That's an unfortunate detail that is many times overlooked in history classes. As usual, Beard does an excellent job of giving the whole story of what took place.

If you possess an interest in the Parthenon and / or ancient Greece in general, this book is a can't miss. For anyone who wishes to tour Greece (or the British museum in London), this book is highly recommended as well. Even if you only have a passing interest in history per-se, this book will give you an avenue to enjoy the Parthenon & all of its frieze and sculptoral splendor.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent history, weak understanding.......2005-01-21

An excellent short history of the Parthenon. Entertaining writing style. But what were the Greeks trying to tell us on this most sculpted temple of Greek antiquity? Like most of the rest of modern classicists and mythologists, Ms. Beard hasn't a clue. It took the artists 15 years to complete the sculptures. They were meant to mean something to us, meant to be understood. For that understanding, I recommend THE PARTHENON CODE: MANKIND'S HISTORY IN MARBLE.

5 out of 5 stars When beauty was in style -- and how it was trashed.......2004-02-01

One chilly February morning, just as dawn was arriving and the shops and offices were still clad in the cold grey of the fading night, I saw by the dawn's golden glow the full splendour of the Parthenon floating serenely above the narrow streets of Athens.

The sun had risen just enough to light the Parthenon. For a moment or so it floated; the Acropolis could have been a cloud with the Parthenon as a vision of the front door to the home of the gods. It was a perfect metaphor for the reputation of ancient Athens as a city committed to beauty, elegance, grace and the sensitivity to express artistic values.

Mary Beard has done a superb job in this concise and poignant history, undoubtedly the finest structure of its kind in the world. The ancients didn't consider it one of the Seven Wonders of the World, they seem to have based their values on volume instead of quality. Perhaps the Parthenon, even today in its ruined state, should be considered first among the Seven Beauties of the World.

Her book is a treasure for anyone who has visited the Acropolis; it is essential for anyone who plans to visit Athens and do more than drink ouzo in some seedy taverna. It's more than a bare-bones history; she recounts the scandals in getting it built, and the subsequent sins of omission and commission during the past 20 centuries during which this gem was defaced.

Maybe my view is warped because of my first magic view; however, I still regard it as a gift of the gods which mortal humans have spoiled. Beard doesn't offer any such speculation; instead, she does offer a nuts-and-bolts history of this gem from the past. That is the strength of her book, she ignores the nonsense and concentrates on facts.

It is also the weakness, in my view. The history is brief but fascinating, but she doesn't understand the psychic importance of Athena to the Athenians. For a comparison, think of the 'Liberty Enlightening the World' statue in New York harbour and its significance to all Americans, whether they have seen it or not. Both statues embody the ideals of the society in which they are displayed; I suggest when you read this book, to keep this comparison in mind to get a full appreciation of just how much each means to the world.

England, of course, hasn't built a monument since Stonehenge. England builds little statues to honor its heroes; think of the Albert Memorial. Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square is a mere 59 columns short of a full Parthenon. How about the Millenium Dome to celebrate two centuries of ? ? ? The Statue of Liberty wasn't an American idea, it was a gift from France. It's not easy to come up with an artifact that expresses the ideals of a society through time.

The Parthenon is a timeless monument. Regardless of what or how you think of it, this book will add to your understanding, appreciation and enjoyment. When you think of how many of today's architectural "gems" will still be visited 2,500 years from now, it gives you an appreciation of what the Athenians accomplished.

Beard tells you how they did it, and then what happened. It's a superb book.

5 out of 5 stars A short, excellent history of the famous temple!.......2003-09-28

Beard's text is an excellent bio of Ancient Greece's most famous temple. Within the 198 pages, Beard traces the establishment of the temple (in Pericle's 'golden era') to its subsequent trials brought on by foreign occupation (Turkish, Venetian) and the mishandling of the ruins by Lord Elgin.

This is primarily a travel book to be taken with one to the actual site. It serves as a nice introduction (with map) to the Parthenon and its varied voyage through time.

      Book Description

The Parthenon. It was ravaged by the early Christians, occupied by the Turks, and looted by the British. Wars were fought all around it. Plato and Socrates, Phidias and Pericles contemplated philosophy, art, drama, and democracy on its steps. And today its proud, ruined columns stand high above the city of Athens, Greece, the last sentinels of what's often considered to be the most important architectural achievement in the world. The Parthenon is without rival in regard to its beauty, purity of design, and tumultuous history. It grew out of war and strife, political uprisings and financial difficulties, and remains a symbol of what humanity -- at its very best -- is capable of accomplishing.

Lynn Curlee, who won a Robert F. Sibert Informational Honor Book award for Brooklyn Bridge, explores the tremendous history behind one of the most recognizable buildings in the world, the Parthenon.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An odd mix.......2006-05-26

Lyn Curlee's Parthenon is an odd mix of beautiful artwork and detailed text. The graphics Curlee creates in Parthenon is a mixture of diagrams of the parthenon and gorgeous paintings that depict what the parthenon could have been like in ancient Greece. On the other hand, Curlee includes detailed text that explains why the parthenon was built, how it was built, and why it was destroyed. However, Curlee uses vocabulary that could be inaccessible for younger children without extensive parental guidance.

The diagnostic process has been refined, many new disorders have been recognized, and the molecular aspects in many cases have been elucidated. The second edition has been completely renovated, with the help of two new co-authors, to incorporate these advances. The book's format is similar to the original but the number of conditions covered has almost doubled and molecular information has been added wherever available. The number of figures has been increased to the limit of economic wisdom. As in the first edition, the illustrations have been selected and sequenced to illustrate both the degree of variability of a given disorder and its changs with age. This book is designed for physicians involved in the evaluation and treatment of patients with skeletal dysplasias, including radiologists, medical geneticists, pediatricians, and orthopedic surgeons. Its main goal is to assist in the diagnosis of specific conditions and the care of affected individuals. Though mutations of specific genes can produce dysplasias with very different phenotypes and prognoses, the primarily clinical aim of this book dictated a phenotypic classification in general, with compromises on etiologic grounds where necessary. Since the attempt to diagnose a skeletal dysplasia from single signs, alone or in cominations, is fraught with errors, the authors focus on basic patterns of skeletal abnormalities.

              Book Description

The foremost religious festival of ancient Athensthe city dedicated to Athena, goddess of war, fertility, arts, and wisdomwas the Panathenaia. Challenging old assumptions and refuting new theories,Worshipping Athena addresses the many problems of interpretation and understanding that have swirled for years around the Panathenaia. Among the issues discussed is the recent sensational controversy over the Parthenon frieze, perhaps the best known but least understood work of Greek art. For centuries the frieze has been thought to represent the Panathenaia procession, but recently the argument has been advanced that it depicts the sacrifice of the daughters of the Athenian king Erechtheus. Worshipping Athena offers compelling evidence that the frieze does indeed depict the festal procession and also demonstrates that scenes of contemporary ritual were not unique to the Parthenon. Editor Jenifer Neils and the contributorseminent classicists, archaeologists, and art historiansexplore the role of the Panathenaia in Athenian life and compare it with similar festivals held throughout the ancient Greek world. They discuss such topics as the Panathenaias mythical origins, the phenomenon of the festivals valuable prizes (oil-filled amphoras, rather than the customary laurel wreath), and the architecture, sculpture, and painting related to the festival. Worshipping Athena will provide valuable insights to scholars and students concerned with ancient religion, mythology, art, literature, and gender issues, as well as anyone with a keen interest in the ritual topography of the Athenian Acropolis and the iconography of the Parthenon frieze.

A superb presentation of a subject central to classical archaeology. . . . All the chapters will be of great interest to scholars, and particularly to students, as they represent up-to-date treatments of enduring problems.William R. Biers, University of MissouriColumbia
