Book Description

Ten thousand years ago, humans and fairies fought a great battle for the magical island of Ireland. When it became clear to the fairy families that they could never win, they decided to move their civilization underground and keep themselves hidden from the humans. All the fairy families agreed on this, except the eighth family, the demons. The demons planned to lift their small island out of time until they had regrouped and were ready to wage war on the humans once more. However, the time spell went wrong, and the island of Hybras was catapulted into Limbo, where it has remained for ten thousand years. Now the tainted time spell is deteriorating and demons are being sucked back into the present space and time. The fairy council is concerned about this and is monitoring any materializations. But when the spells deterioration accelerates, the materializations become unpredictable. Even the fairy scientists cannot figure out where the next demon will pop up. But someone can. Artemis Fowl, teenage criminal mastermind, has solved temporal equations that no normal human should be intelligent enough to understand. So when a confused and frightened demon pops up in a Sicilian theater, Artemis Fowl is there to meet him. Unfortunately, he is not the only one. A second, mysterious party has also solved the temporal equations, and has managed to abduct the demon before Artemis can secure him. Once again, Artemis will have to pair up with his old comrade, Captain Holly Short, to track down the missing demon and rescue him, before the time spell dissolves completely and the lost demon colony returns violently to Earth.

I found certain aspects somewhat predictable, but it's nice that Artemis has met another genius to contend with. Can't wait for the next one!

I enjoyed this book as much as the other books. I couldn't put the book down. I would recommend this book to anyone to read.

5 out of 5 stars Keep them coming!.......2007-08-23

This last adventure was just as intriguing as the other ones, yet the climax really surprised me. I genuinely recommend this book, as well as the rest of the Artemis' series. To be honest, I started reading them a couple of years ago, to cover the space between Harry Potter's books. After the second one, I just got fascinated with the plot and the characters. Harry, you do have quite and adversary there!

5 out of 5 stars Just as great as the rest.......2007-07-03

I am a HUGE fan of Garth Nix's works. The books, expecially in this series, capture my attention every time to where I feel like I can't put them down until I read the very last punctuation mark. Lady Friday followed along with the other books, and I cannot wait for the next two to finish out the series!

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Read!.......2007-06-17

This was yet another great book in this series. I was so disappointed when I got finish with it in less than 12 hours. I cannot believe I have to wait another year for Superior Saturday and then another for Lord Sunday!

5 out of 5 stars A top pick for prior fans........2007-06-10

Garth Nix's latest ' The Keys to the Kingdom' addition is LADY FRIDAY, telling of Arthur Penhaligon, whose friends have been captured by the Pipe in a world where the army controls most of the Great Maze. Pitted against the ruthless Lady Friday, Arthur finds himself in a race to win control of the House and assume his role as a rightful heir - or lose everything - in this fifth book of the series, recommended as a top pick for prior fans.

5 out of 5 stars An already exciting and at times scary adventure.......2007-06-01

On the fifth day, there was fear...

Leaf wakes up in a hospital ward and realizes something strange is going on. There are several people with her, but they all appear to be sound asleep, and there are no medical items. Leaf remembers that Lady Friday was a nurse at the tent hospital, but it's not until a frightened hospital cleaner tries to save Leaf from being detected that Leaf becomes aware of the danger that she --- along with her Aunt Mango and several other sleepers --- is in.

Meanwhile, Arthur wakes up from a nightmare in the Citadel. The last battle has left him shaken, but he appears to have defeated the Piper for now. Unfortunately, the New Nithling army has control of the Great Maze, while Superior Saturday causes trouble by cutting off the telephone lines and controlling the elevators of the House. To make matters worse, the Dame Primus, since gaining the Fourth Part of the Will, has unwonted, barely-concealed moments of rage. Arthur isn't sure he can trust her, but he has no choice. He is trying to figure out what happened to his family in the week that has passed on Earth, as well as locate his friends who have been captured --- or worse --- by the Piper.

Then, a messenger from Lady Friday arrives bearing a letter and a gift. Lady Friday has apparently abdicated her position and will turn it over to whoever can find the Fifth Part of the Will and the Fifth Key. For Arthur, this means he has to go against the Piper and Superior Saturday and possibly gain control over them. However, the week hasn't been going well for Arthur, and it gets worse when he is unexpectedly transferred to somewhere within the House, with no known way of getting back to the Great Maze or to the Secondary Realms.

While Arthur tries to make his way to Lady Friday's Scriptorium, he encounters some familiar enemies and meets a few new characters, including the Paper Pushers, who have an unusual but interesting line of work. Arthur has more work cut out for him, but when Leaf discovers Lady Friday's real motive --- "experiencing" --- the day is further seeped in the fear of the unknown.

LADY FRIDAY, the fifth book in Garth Nix's The Keys to the Kingdom series, adds another dimension to an already exciting and at times scary adventure that will have readers looking forward to the weekend.

When Bobby Pendragon first arrives on the tropical world of Ibara, he finds

paradise. As he works to uncover clues about the turning point this seemingly

idyllic territory will soon face, all he can determine is that the people of

Ibara are blissfully happy. It's not long before Bobby discovers, however, that

they are also blissfully...oblivious.

The leaders of Ibara are keeping a devastating secret from their people, one

that gives Saint Dane all the opportunity he needs to launch his final assault

on Halla.

While Bobby struggles to learn the truth in time to thwart Saint Dane, Courtney

Chetwynde desperately searches for Mark Diamond. On the heels of a shocking

tragedy, Mark has disappeared. Worse, he seems to be under Saint Dane's

influence. It's up to Courtney to find Mark and stop him from making a grave

mistake that could change the future of all existence.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pendragon rocks!.......2007-09-20

Another exciting chapter of the Pendragon adventure, the Pilgrims of Rayne continues to follow Bobby Pendragon, now a 17 year old boy, as he attempts to save another territory from being thrown into utter chaos by the very evil Saint Dane. As with the previous books, the twists and turns never stop! At times, what is revealed was so surprising that I had to stop and take a breather! The tone of this book shifts from the other books in that Bobby is starting to realize that his mission is about all of Halla, not just one territory. Things start to blend and shift. Victory is not as clear-cut as it was before for Bobby, and neither is defeat. And the motivations behind Saint Dane's evil acts are revealed more. Plus more time travel fun!

D.J. McHale is the master of surprise, white-knuckle suspense, as well as laugh out loud fun. This is possibly the best adventure series of all time, for both kids and adults. In my opinion, it is even better than Harry Potter. Grab all of his books today!

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-08-31

This is a great addition to the Pendragon series. I highly recomend reading the first books first.

4 out of 5 stars Very good!.......2007-08-17

Ok, this is book 8 and I can see major events unfolding but I'm a little frustrated as to where this whole thing is going. The territories are all mixed and there are indications of a huge grand scheme. I would like more glimpses into the grand scheme. We can go to 1000 territories and have adventures but it gets a little boring after a while when the stories don't culminate into meaning. I think it's time we enter more into Saint Dane's world and experience that a bit.

5 out of 5 stars review by A Tran.......2007-08-12

You have got to read this book! When you think something will happen, the story does something totally different. I have read the whole series and I love it. It has a sense of adventure when Bobby goes to the different territories. Plus you never know what will happen. The author also uses what happens in the previous books as an effect of something a character in the story might do in another book. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys science fiction or action books. Also the author builds the energy in the story then lets it all out towards the end. Unlike other authors who build until the middle of the story, then the rest is boring.

Winter of the Ice Wizard is a great Magic Tree House book. It begins when Jack and Annie get a note from Merlin. They end up with Teddy and Kathleen at the castle of the Ice Wizard. There, they learn that he wrote the note and had kidnapped Merlin and Morgan. In order to save them, they have to find the Ice Wizard's eye. They recieve directions to go to the Hollow Hill, and they do, in the ice Wizard's sleigh. They find the eye and give it to the Wizard. He is sad and mad because they eye doesn't work. Then Teddy and Kathleen bring in the swan maiden, the Wizard's sister, and she tells him that she will forgive him. Then his eye works. They are given back Merlin and Morgan, and the mission is over.

I think that this is a great book. Winter of the Ice Wizard is my favorite Magic Tree House book!

The perfect first space book for those almost-readers, There's No Place Like Space takes us on a whirlwind tour of our solar system, with a few constellations thrown in for good measure. Cat in the Hat (along with beloved Thing One and Thing Two) straps on his space suit and rhymes his way among the nine planets, presenting important facts along the way. Where else could your preschooler learn phonics and astronomy at same time? "A planet can have satellites that surround it. Uranus has lots of these objects around it" is just one example. This is a fine addition to the library of any young stargazer--few books are written with this many facts furnished in such an easy-reading manner. (Preschool to early reader) --Jill Lightner

Book Description

Blast off for educational fun! Beginning readers and budding astronomers are launched via Seussian sorcery on a wild trip to visit the nine planets in our solar system along with the Cat in the Hat, Thing One, Thing Two, and Dick and Sally.

4 out of 5 stars There's No Place Like Space.......2007-10-03

There's So Place Like Space is a great book for toddlers who are interested in space. Not too complicated but good for learning a few interesting facts about our planets. Written with the rhyme of Dr. Seuss.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book to Planets.......2007-09-25

I had not realized the effectiveness of this book until my 4 year old started making up songs about the planets, their colors, and their place in space. As I listened to his little songs he sang as he was playing, I realized his information, or lyrics, came from what he learned in this book. Entertaining, fun, educational. You can't go wrong with this rhyming introduction and imaginary travel through space.

5 out of 5 stars Science made easy and enjoyable.......2007-03-09

My 2 1/2 year old daughter and 3 year old niece love this book. It gives enough information about the planets and solar system to be educational, but the author also uses classic Seuss elements of rhyming and silliness to keep the kids sustained in attention and entertained. I highly recommend this to any young solar system fans!!

5 out of 5 stars SUPER book for a preschool class.......2006-10-07

I had to go to the bookstore last night to purchase a new book to read to the preschool class I teach. I can say without a doubt this was enjoyed by ALL the children. SO easy to read and accurate too :) They all enjoyed it and I am VERY happy to add this to my book collection!!

5 out of 5 stars Pre-Schooler Likes Better Than Me and My Place in Space.......2006-01-22

We purchased this and Me and My Place in Space for our pre-schooler. While the other book is more scientifically accurate (showing rings around Jupiter, Neptune, and Uranus) this book was more engaging for our little one. She sits still while I read every page. The other book is perhaps better for older, more sophisticated readers.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious.......2007-09-11

I could retire just to keep rereading this book and stargazing and following the many enticing breadcrumbs of information scattered around the lovely images. The only possible improvement would be a "hyperlinked" version: For me, someone operating rather far from the natural sciences, some of the paragraphs were a great review, but others opened up more questions than answers. But what glorious questions they are, and how spiritual an experience it has been to journey among atoms and galaxies and across time. Thank you for bringing back the awe that I had forgotten to feel for the last few years!

2 out of 5 stars Great book, if only it stayed in one piece. .......2007-09-06

I bought this book for my son for Christmas. He loved it; it's full of beautiful illustrations and facts. But well before summer vacation, the cover had come off entirely, and the book had become useless remnants of a primordial expansion event. He may not have treated it quite a gently as he should have, but I have to think they ought to make them a bit more entropy-resistant than that.

I'd like to give this book both five stars and one, but this river, as opposed to the one in the sky, does not allow for such astral profligracy.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!.......2007-08-17

A monumental effort. Well worth the cost even if one was forced to pay the full retail price for this book. Everything that can be said has been said by others. I'm just here to add my 5 star to a well deserving book

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a great price.......2007-08-15

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Astronomy. Your knowledge level can range from "what is that grey and white ball in the night sky?" to "which super cluster does our galaxy belong to?" Superb and colorful illustrations, breath-taking photos and information on just about everything you could possibly want to know about concerning the universe fill this book. Plus, it is rather easy to comprehend. This is not a college text book by any means but more of a general purpose guide to the heavens. *****

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Own.......2007-08-12

I own a lot of books about universe & astronomy & I used to go to library to check out what is new. When I encountered this book, I checked it out & renew twice & finally decided that I have to own this book. The photography is amazing, clean, sharp & colored. After so many nights out using my Dobsonian reflector to watch planets, I realize this book really enhances my experience & increases the joy of a hobbist. The book is very informative. You can actually read every word & enjoy every moment out of it. The section constellations contains interesting ancient story that is very helpful in star watching, since it is hard to forget those stories. The night sky section covers star position up to 2012, it is really handy for star watcher. I consider this book & Dickinson's NightWatch essential to anyone interested in astronomy & star watching.

5 out of 5 stars Magic school bus does it again!.......2007-02-06

All the magic school bus books are fantastic. This one is no different.
It is great for learning about the solar system.

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks (asteroids)!.......2006-02-10

This book is a blast (no pun intended)! Mrs. Frizzle and her class travel to every planet in the solar system. The bus breaks down in the asteroid belt and the students have to find Mrs. Frizzle on a very cold planet. You'll love all the colorful pictures and Arnold's crazy cousin! Blast-off to this book and learn a lot about space in a fun way!

5 out of 5 stars Lost in the Solar System.......2005-12-10

I like this book because it makes me wonder about the solar system and everything happening in it. I love imagining what things are like in other places and this book makes me think but it also taught me stuff about the solar system too. This book makes me want to visit the solar system myself.

3 out of 5 stars The Magic School Bus.......2004-02-12

This book is about a class who goes to the musuem but it is closed. So they see it up close. Janet was bragging about everything. After the trip they had learned a lot

I think the book is about being nice. The book is about learning new things. Learning new things is part of life. The book is saying to learn. The book is telling us to try new things.

I think the book is nice. The book has a series. It teaches you stuff. It also is funny. It's my favorite. It's fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Magic school bus "lost in solar system".......2004-02-04

I like this book because it has to deal with the solar system and i like to learn about space. It does a very good job teaching you about it, and the book was really fun to read. I like how the bus turnes into a space ship and goes to all the planets.

4 out of 5 stars Worth your time.......2007-09-19

The characters are great. The stories are great. The ending is even kind of strangely touching, especially for the 40K setting. I'm not sure what else to say about it except that I can't wait to read his Ravenor novels now.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-09-08

Simply the best sf I have read in years, dark, deep and well written. The first 40K I read and the best so far.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best!.......2007-08-03

Abnett is in true and spectacular form!

All 3 books in one massive read is an excellent way to get immersed into the Inquistor ranks of the 40k universe. Most of the other 20 reviwers have already covered in great detail what this book has and doesnt have.

I want to also add that if you happen to like SF and walk past this book at your local B&N, BAM, WB, or here at Amazon do yourself a favor and get it! Get it now and prepare for a wonderful tale that will take you on a epic journey and wont let you down. There are too many moments to highlight from the Omnibus that I'd rather tell you to just buy this book and you will also see for yourself.

This one will most likely be read and reread many more times as it since in my library of 40k books.

5 out of 5 stars Eisenhorn Omnibus.......2007-07-01

The Eisenhorn omnibus is an epic collection from the 40k universe. Abnett is a master of his craft and takes the reader on a journey across the galaxy in a quest to purge the Imperium of evil. The characters, plot, and setting are all dynamic and you can almost see events unfolding before your eyes. An excellent series for anyone who loves Warhammer or science fiction in general.

5 out of 5 stars Viscerally and intellectually stimulating.......2007-04-16

Eisenhorn is great.

Like all of Abnett's books (that I know of), Eisenhorn is set in the Warhammer 40K universe. That doesn't matter, in that no prior knowledge of the universe is necessary to enjoy the books. And it matters a lot, in that the WH40K universe is a handy setting for exploring certain questions.

And Abnett is angling for very big questions. Is it okay to use evil to fight evil? How much? Should dangerous knowledge be locked away or destroyed? What about dangerous people? Is a bad person ever beyond saving?

Would you voluntarily sacrifice one innocent life to save others? Who?

In the WH40K universe demons are real, heresy is contagious, and the church and the state are one. Gregor Eisenhorn is an Inquisitor, tasked with uprooting and destroying the major threats to human civilization: aliens, mutants, and heretics (the three branches of the Inquisition, and the titles of the individual novels, are Xenos, Malleus, and Hereticus). Thanks to advanced technology, high caste humans of the far future have lifespans measured in centuries. The Eisenhorn trilogy spans something like 300 years, during which time Eisenhorn builds up a supporting organization, tackles ever more dangerous adversaries, and increases his own knowledge and power. Whereas most WH40K novels deal with soldiers and combat, the Eisenhorn books are more like mystery thrillers. Well, science fantasy mystery thrillers punctuated by frequent firefights, anyway.

Some reviewers (here and elsewhere) have knocked Abnett for a couple of things that turn up in a lot of his books: he has no compunctions about killing major characters, and his endings tend to be a bit abrupt. The first one is not really even a complaint in my book. It's more like a compliment for writing characters that we care about and still being tough enough to tell the necessary story. It's also true that Abnett's books come to quick ends; you can't help noticing that there are only 15 pages left when you're still gearing up for the final confrontation. On the other hand, this ain't Return of the King. You're not going to cry at the end and neither is Samwise Gamgee, so there's no reason to drag it out for half a dozen endings. I know it's cliche, but really, seriously, the Eisenhorn trilogy is about the journey, not the destination. It's not what Eisenhorn does to the bad guys that's of primary interest; it's what he does to himself and his loved ones along the way.

Book Description

You live on Earth, so you already know a lot about it. But do you know about its place in out solar system? For instance, it's not the largest planet. If Jupiter were a hallow ball, 1,000 Earths would fit inside it. And did you know our planet Earth takes 365 days to go around the sun, while the planet Pluto takes 248 years?

This simple text by Franklyn M. Branely introduces the nine planets in our solar system and is complemented by Kevin O'Malley's full-color illustrations, which incorporate some of the newest space photographs available. How hot is it on Venus? Which planet takes longest to orbit the sun? Find out the answers in this updated version of this popular text. Kevin O'Malleys often humorous illustrations depict a group of children and an astronomer as they learn all about our solar system. Included are some of the newest space photographs available, as well as many hands-on activities.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-05-21

My son is obsessed with planets. This text is good and the artwork is nice. But a new edition needs to come out to explain that Pluto is no longer considered a planet. We have to read the book and then explain that to him afterwards.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-05-07

I put this book in my 4 year old sons Easter Basket, and it was his favorite part of the basket. He loves it and has learned SO much from reading it. Not only is it a great book for this age, it teaches so much in a really easy format that is easy to retain. We love it.

3 out of 5 stars good for kids just learning about the solar system.......2007-04-10

I have a 5 yr old that loves anything to do with space. I got older (adult) books from the library about the solar system and he learned tons of info. When we got this book he was excited but he didn't end up learning anything new. The book mostly talks about the relationship of the planets to the sun, their order, if they're hot or cold. They grouped the planets together stating which ones were hot or cold but didn't individually talk the planets other than saying you can see Mars early in the evening and Earth is the life planet.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction for Younger Kids.......2007-03-14

This is an excellent overview of our solar system. It has great engaging illustrations with enough little "gems" to find on every page (Shrodinger's Cat for instance). This book introduces young children to a more detaialed look at our Solar System and with specific facts about each planet.

As other reviewers have noted, the book is thematic. The illustrations included allow the parent/ teacher to point out "real world" uses of scientific knowledge (math, physics, etc.). There is one page that includes "footnotes" for the captions on the oppostie page. This is useful in teaching younger children such concepts for later reading.

As a home educator to my 4 year old son, I found the craft ideas especially beneficial in that it provides you with specific details on how to enhance the learning of these concepts with a couple of simple hands-on projects using materials easily found around your house. This material is easily adapted for older kids, although it may not include enough specific details for the older end of the age spectrum.

5 out of 5 stars 3.5 yo loves it.......2007-02-11

my 3.5 yo daughter loves this book and has memorized almost every fact in the book!

When I first saw that it was about war it kinda turned me off but I still read it anyway b/c I love this series. It wasn't so bad. It's my least favorite of the series though

5 out of 5 stars Great Story!.......2007-04-05

Apparently this series is aimed at a pre-adolescent reader; I am not in that category and yet I am unable to put these books down. The Keys To The Kingdom is a well written and compelling story!

3 out of 5 stars "It is Clearly the Latest Move of the Morrow Days Against You, Arthur, and Against Us...".......2007-03-17

By now the basic premise of Garth Nix's seven-part "The Keys to the Kingdom" series is well established. Arthur Penhaligon has been thrown into an extraordinary world: the epicenter of the universe, known as "the House". Ruled by the treacherous Morrow Days (named after the days of the week and each personifying one of the seven deadly sins: Mister Monday/sloth; Grim Tuesday/greed; Drowned Wednesday/gluttony and now Sir Thursday who appears to be pride), Arthur has been given the task of reassembling the missing pieces of the Will that will strip these characters of their power and return it to the Rightful Heir - himself!

Perhaps a bit more exposition is needed: the Will is the written word of the creator of this world; a mysterious female-deity known as the Architect. Each piece of the Will takes the form of an animal before each is enveloped into Dame Primus; the embodiment of the Will itself. She grows stronger as Arthur returns each part of herself, and armed with the keys of the Morrow Days, the two stand a chance against the awesome power that each Morrow Day wields. So far Arthur has been successful, though the reluctant hero is getting nervous about his chances of returning home to his ordinary life, not to mention the dangers posed to his own world thanks to the upheavals taking place in the House.

In particular, Arthur is terrified about "the Skinless Boy", the doppelganger that has taken his place in the real world and who has the power to infect those about him with a grey mould that renders them his mindless servants. Sending his friend Leaf (her parents were hippies) back home to attempt to find the source of the Skinless Boy's power and destroy it, Arthur turns his attention to matters in the House. He has unknowingly been drafted into the Glorious Army of Sir Thursday, who has arrogantly released several thousand Nithlings (creatures made from Nothingness) into his province, the Great Maze, in order to train his troops. Feeling that it is the best hiding place for Arthur, Dame Primus encourages him to enlist so that he might seize the opportunity to get close find the forth piece of the Will. Moving between the two plots is the irrepressible Suzy Turquoise Blue, easily Nix's most vivacious character.

Garth Nix spent a few years in the Australian Army Reserve, which explains why so much of the routine and regulations of army life is so vividly captured in Arthur's stint as a soldier. Long hours of tedious training, yelling drill sergeants, heavy marches through difficult terrain, endless inspections, being shuffled from officer to officer, and then the heat and confusion of battle itself - it's enough to put you off war for good.

Arthur is gradually growing up as the stories go on, willingly taking more and more responsibility on his young shoulders as his emotional investment in the House and its inhabitants grow (not to mention the symbiotic effect it has on his own world). Even if it means loosing his own humanity and becoming a Denizen of the House, Arthur is now fully committed to his cause, foregoing a way out at what seems like a great personal cost. Likewise, pieces of the master-plan at work behind the Morrow Days are beginning to show - could it be that the Days of the Week are not behind some of the chaos? Arthur finds himself relying more and more on himself to find his own path through the turmoil of the political intrigue. At one stage he finds himself caught between three morally ambiguous characters: the self-righteous Will, the tyrannical Sir Thursday and the mysterious Piper that considers himself the Rightful Heir. Event the Architect herself - supposedly the creator of the universe - is thrown into some doubt in this installment. How Arthur wades through these murky waters makes for challenging and thought-provoking reading.

Unfortunately, much of the story feels a bit like padding. Arthur gets "cleaned between the ears", that is, his memory is wiped, but this somewhat clichéd amnesia-device adds little to the plot itself save as a minor inconvenience that he soon overcomes. Likewise, although the action-sequences of Leaf attempting to thwart the designs of the Skinless Boy are tense and fast-paced, it is ultimately a subplot that has no real bearing on the central thread of the story. Garth Nix's vivid imagination is firmly intact when it comes to atmosphere - particularly in his portrayal of the Great Maze as a moveable checkerboard, with each square covered in a different terrain - but although I enjoyed this installment better than "Drowned Wednesday", it still doesn't quite live up to the intense imaginative tour-de-force of "Mister Monday" and "Grim Tuesday." Nevertheless, I'll be on the lookout for "Lady Friday!"
