Book Description

The Complete Sailor takes the reader from the first sail to a mastery of small-boat handling. Weaving his writing around 600 drawings by noted marine illustrator Kelly Mulford, David Seidman has created a book in which each double-page spread invites the eye and communicates volumes of information. The Complete Sailor goes beyond other learn-to-sail books to cover navigation, boat design, and seamanship. Encyclopedic in scope yet warm in style, it conveys the magic as well as the techniques of sailing. Among the other topics covered: anchoring, ropework, rigging, weather, fog, squalls, currents and tides, rules of the road, trailering, and working the winds. The book is a gentle introduction for those just starting out, and a guide to new horizons for those who already sail.

3 out of 5 stars good beginners reference.......2007-10-01

lots of black and white drawings make the info clear..very basic..great starter, add to your library

3 out of 5 stars Sailing for the VERY first time.......2007-09-20

For the skilled sailer the book will be a dissapointment.
That said, the book will be an important source of all kinds of maritim knowledge for the beginner.

5 out of 5 stars just my style.......2007-08-10

After sailing by bits and pieces since I was a child, I had no formal instruction of any kind. when I finally succumed to yacht ownership, where mistakes can be costly, I looked arund to find a single, straightforward book what would confirm what I had been doing right, let me know what I was doing wrong, and show me volumes of stuff I never would have figured out. ...and the illustrations are cool!

5 out of 5 stars For the Intermediate Sailor.......2007-04-10

If you've been sailing for a little while and are looking to expand your knowledge, this book will give you many great tips.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best post-beginners guides.......2007-03-28

I recently took up sailing and bought this book, along with some others, as a general reference to accompany my lessons. The first time I read it through it seemed OK but nothing special, but having now acquired some skills it is really becoming useful. Every time I re-read it (as I have done several times) the amount of detail and practical information seems to increase, and that is not necessarily the case with other books. The author has packed an immense amount of information into a small book, but it is best for refreshing the memory or consolidating practical knowledge learned in lessons - sort of a second opinion. Reading Seidman after a lesson is like going to visit an old sailor who straightens everything out for you.

It is not, however, the best book for absolute beginners, simply because it is so very packed with concise information, and a lot goes over the neophyte's head. For absolute beginners the very best books are the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) sailing series - they are exceptional.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Review but Not Enough Practical Information.......2006-10-09

This book gives a reasonably good review about boating (but not about boat ownership, see below). It discusses things like safety, navigation, anchoring and docking. Much of it was based on larger sailboats although some of it does apply to boats of all sizes. I was disappointed at the illustrations and pictures that look like they date back to 1970. No color pictures.

But there was little practical advice about day to day boating, which was what I was looking for. Briefly, I wanted to know things like:
1. boat cleaning advice (what best to use)
2. when and how long to run bilge pump
3. tying knots
4. winter storage
5. basic Coast Guard regulations

So the book wasn't bad but was a bit disappointing for beginner boat owner.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for those completely new to boating........2005-09-02

The title says it all...
It was easy to read and the author answers alot of questions you might be too embarrassed to ask.

5 out of 5 stars Great summary of what you REALLY need to know!.......2002-09-11

You can wade through several 200+ page books and get some of the information contained in this one, but this book gives you what you really need to know (and the information is a lot easier to discern than from those big books). So many beginner's books don't really deal with what you have to know, such as docking, anchoring, rules of the road, reading a chart, use of the radio, heavy weather, etc. This is not a "how to sail book." But sailors, like all boaters, must know the knowledge of seamanship contained in this book to be safe and enjoy themselves and unfortunately many on the water do not. I've sailed for many years, have taken several classes, etc. and this is the book I recommend to everyone new to boating or for a review.

2 out of 5 stars Not for small-medium power boats.......2002-05-26

Perhaps useful if you own a large sailboat, but not very relevant for a lake-bound 23' powerboat. Expected more diagrams.

5 out of 5 stars Covers Everything.......2000-03-18

I took my wife and kids to Tortola this past winter, and bareboat charted a sail boat. I had read through many books on boating, but this one was by far the best. It gave me all the knowledge to enjoy my boating experience without getting into the usual trouble a amatuer would find themselves in. I would recommend this book to anyone, definatley worth the price

      Book Description

Despite the large quantity of phenomenological information concerning the bulk properties of nematic phase liquid crystals, little is understood about the origin of the surface energy, particularly the surface, interfacial, and anchoring properties of liquid crystals that affect the performance of liquid crystal devices. Self-contained and unique, Adsorption Phenomena and Anchoring Energy in Nematic Liquid Crystals provides an account of new and established results spanning three decades of research into the problems of anchoring energy and adsorption phenomena in liquid crystals. The book contains a detailed discussion of the origin and possible sources of anchoring energy in nematic liquid crystals, emphasizing the dielectric contribution to the anchoring energy in particular. Beginning with fundamental surface and anchoring properties of liquid crystals and the definition of the nematic phase, the authors explain how selective ion adsorption, dielectric energy density, thickness dependence, and bias voltage dependence influence the uniform alignment of liquid crystals and affect the performance of liquid crystal devices. They also discuss fundamental equations regulating the adsorption phenomenon and the dynamic aspects of ion adsorption phenomenon in liquid crystalline systems. Adsorption Phenomena and Anchoring Energy in Nematic Liquid Crystals serves as an excellent source of reference for graduates and researchers working in liquid crystals, complex fluids, condensed matter physics, statistical physics, chemical engineering, and electronic engineering, as well as providing a useful general introduction to and background information on the nematic liquid crystal phase.

4 out of 5 stars The Meaning of Life as seen from the Cross.......2003-09-18

In six hours Jesus accomplished his redemptive work and in so doing brought meaning to man's life. Max Lucado weaves contemporary stories together with Biblical events to bring a fresh and multi-faceted view of how people were affected by what Jesus did. There's the prodigal son, the woman caught in adultery, the widow of Nain, Lazarus, the thief at the cross among others. All saw new meaning to life, experienced forgiveness from God, and the promise of resurrection and eternal life when they came to the Saviour. The last chapter was the most touching and described the final glance as Max's dad lay dying, paralleling it with the final look by the centurion as Jesus died on the cross.

This book is inspiring and explains the anchor points that you should hold onto when life's hurricanes hit. That basically Jesus has done it all for you on the cross, and that your life is not futile, your failures are not fatal, and your death is not final. Jesus has purchased you with His Blood, and promises you forgiveness of sins if you come to him, and not only that, but eternal life. Therefore anchor your soul to the Rock of Salvation and He will hold onto you throughout life's storms.

5 out of 5 stars He puts it in language we can relate to today.......2002-03-05

I have several of Max Lucado's books, and have never been disappointed. This book puts Jesus death and resurrection in language and thoughts we can under today without losing the biblical meaning. He creates a clear picture and stirs up emotion. Most of the time he brings in someone else's point of view that maybe you hadn't thought of. I highly recommend this book, I read it every Easter.

5 out of 5 stars If you ever wonder how much God loves you!!.......2001-06-16

A classic from 1989 this book tells Christians how much God loves them. With the big idea of our lives are not futile. Our failures are not fatal and our deaths are not final. Each chapter of this book begins with an personal illustration from the author and then moves into the life of Christ. I have read this book at least three times. Each time I read it this book stirs me. I don't know how many tears have fallen while reading this book. If you have never read this book I strongly encourage you to do so. You will not be disappointed.

      5 out of 5 stars I was very surprised.......2000-09-16

I bought the book as a gift, but decided to read it first to see if it was ok to give...I was certainly surprised, I was even brought to tears in a lot of chapters...especially when Max does a re-telling of the ruler's daughter in a modern setting. Wow!

Makes a great gift, for others & one's self!

5 out of 5 stars Six Hours One Friday.......2000-02-21

So easy to read and understand. The chapter tilted 'The Golden Golbet' gave me the simplest picture of God's love and grace for me. I have read this book three times and continue to give it as gifts to people I meet.

5 out of 5 stars The most powerfully moving books I've ever read........1997-11-15

Growing up in the church, I've had the opportunity to read many books about the power of prayer and the authority Jesus has over the bondages Satan tries to keep us in...but I have never been so completely affected by one book as I was reading Six Hours One Friday. If you sometimes read scripture and feel like it's a documentary and wish you had an idea about the emotional side of things, like how the woman at the well actually felt when she went to get water mid-day instead of in the morning with the other women (why?) What she was probably thinking when she ran into Jesus at the well, and then having Him tell her everything about her life, and then revealing the secret of the ages, that He's the Messiah- I mean, can you imagine what this lady was thinking? Or what the mother of Lazarus was going through at the lose of her son, and what exultation she must have felt at having her son returned to her?! Lucado even describes what the demon hovering over the body must have been thinking when he got a load of Jesus parting the crowds..."He didn't see what the others saw. He didn't see the face of a Nazarene. He didn't hear the voice of a man. He saw the wrath of God. He heard the command of a King." I'll bet you never gave these emotions much thought because the scripture doesn't really tell, but Lucado does, and it will bring you to your knees.

3 out of 5 stars Out of date.......2006-04-23

Not bad and a good resource from a respected author; however there have been some big moves forward in anchors in recent years, particularly in the small boat / cruising yacht area that this addresses.

Anchor types such as Spade, Bulwagga, and Rocna have made the traditional plows, claws, and Danforth-types all but obsolete.

A revision that devotes a chapter to these newer designs is badly needed. In the meantime be sure to take note of what is missing.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-02-25

Definitive book on the subject. Read it to learn what you didn't know you needed to know.
Also good reference to have on board in case you get into a dicey situation.

      4 out of 5 stars Nearly Complete.......2005-11-30

There is lots of good information in this well-written book. I've been anchoring for years and have read many books on anchoring and still I learned a lot from reading it. However, I am left wanting for some details.

For example, the entire second chapter is devoted to describing how hard boats pull on anchors and how to determine the pull for particular boats. But when I tried to follow along and do the calculations for my boat, the information I needed was not there.

This is a very good book, but I'm still searching...

Very thorough material regarding probably one of the MOST significant factors in boating; i.e. how to KEEP your vessel in tact and prevent unforseen disasters. Very factual & a real eye-opener of one the most critical foundational components of boating. I never realized that something so meaningless as anchoring, anchors, ground tackle, chains, ropes/lines, windlasses, moorings, etc. could prove to be so vital yet disregarded by a skipper. Earl Hinz really did an excellant job pooling information together from a lot of different sources. This is one subject that any skipper should become enthusiastic about even though it sounds glamorless and boring.

      Book Description

What do you get when an ex-NASA engineer and statistician turned bestselling how-to-writer decides to move aboard a boat? The Liveaboard Report, a statistical analysis filled with bar charts and pie graphs that quantifies what works and what doesn't for a representative sampling of liveaboard boaters. Charlie Wing interviewed 71 liveaboards of all sorts, and asked them 400 questions about what most aspiring liveaboards want to know: What does it cost? What boat should I get? Is refrigeration worth the hassle? What anchor works best? This book is different from other liveaboard guides. This author doesn't say, "Listen up--I am an expert, and this is the way to do it." Instead, he says "I asked this question of 71 crews with 277 collective years' experience living aboard. Three percent said X, 20 percent said Y, and 77 percent said Z. Let that be your guide."

Interesting, if you are an economist or if you operate like Bill Clinton and base each decision on an opinion poll. Hurry, someone take this guy's graph program away.

2 out of 5 stars Why didn't you tell me?.......2005-07-27

It would have been nice to know that this book had zero zip snot to do with power boats before I bought it. Also, I find the author's info a bit suspect when he says he talked to one owner of a 42 foot power boat who spent $13000.00 a month on maintenance alone and based his entire decision not to include anything but sail boats based on this one interview.

What the author does have is a love for bar and pie charts with a few actual graphs thrown in to break up the (intense) monotony. The problem is that none of them are in color so in some cases you have to try to differentiate between two shades of black. Had I picked this book up in a store I would have politely put it back on the shelf.

The information is way out of date. One referance states that people were waiting for GPS units to drop below $1000!!! And the same section talks about the growing number of people who were getting a VCR.

1 out of 5 stars Methinks this book was written only to generate money for the author.......2005-07-16

3 out of 5 stars Useful, but becoming out of date........2004-06-16

I brought this book to assist me in choosing a design for a cruising yacht, and found much useful material.
However some of the material is now dated (1992?), and the surveys appear to have been restricted to the Intercoastal Waterway and near Caribean islands.
A modern update would be appreciated.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for equipment choices.......2003-11-23

A couple weeks ago I finished reading Charlie Wing's "The Liveaboard Report / A Boat Dweller's Guide to What Works and What Doesn't". In it he interviews 71 sail-boaters -- these are cruisers for the most part, and not your weekend-warrior racer types.

Anyway, the author provides pie charts and bar graphs of the responses for a gazillion questions a beginner might have. The premise was, what would he (CW) like to know before investing in various systems and goodies. What works so to speak, planned for improvements, along with what they would change if money were no object. I found it interesting. It also had a small section on budgeting/budgets.

One thing which struck me (and he) was that of those with refrigeration, those with engine driven systems were not happy. The problem (if memory serves me) is that folks aren't real pleased to run their engine for an hour a day to charge the system, and cruisers with other power sources for their units were more satisfied.

You know, I too have read those wonderful stats of the engine driven units... but I don't know that running an engine (wear and tear) for an hour a day is going to make me a happy cruiser. It's the 'little things' -- my budget will be limited, therefore it is critical that I learn as much as possible pre-purchase so my choices can be wiser, one hopes! ;)

You might consider the book... it opened my eyes. For instance, we read so much about SSBs and the like, but in the book, universally VHF was aboard -- and not so much the SSB. I'm going to take another look through my copy this evening (taking notes) and then upload it to my website.

"The Liveaboard Report" is worth a look, though I don't know if I'd want to keep it aboard. It's more a Guide for good decision-making rather than a book you'd need forever.

        Book Description

This comprehensive manual shows you how to go places and do things you never thought possible in a small outboard motorboat. A well-designed ruggedly built 17-footer, for instance, can fish offshore, circumnavigate Lake Superior, and crisscross the continent on inland waterways or on a trailer pulled by the family car. Small outboards are among the most versatile boats ever developed and are far more able than you might expect. Covered here are all the popular types--and some exciting alternatives as well as methods that may change your entire boating outlook.

Aided by contributions from other experts, veteran outboard skipper David R. Getchell, Sr., offers a wealth of useful facts and special savvy that reveal for the first time in a single book the true potential of these democratic boats 20 feet and under. Here are the means to understand what can be done, and the way to do it safely, including: how to judge a boat's potential and capabilities based on design and construction; how to rebuild an older boat; how to handle a little boat in big seas, surf, or shallow water; how to navigate; how to read the weather; how to head upriver or offshore; how to trailer your boat; how to manage and equip it for camp cruising on a nearby lake or for subarctic exploration; and how to care for the boat and motor.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Info for Boaters.......2007-05-17

We don't have a boat yet, but have a lake nearby so are contemplating it. This book is quite interesting as it describes different types of boats (runabout, bass boat, etc.) and what to consider before purchasing one.
Then it has lots of info on handling a boat, like how to run an inlet or docking and anchoring. It's a little scary seeing how much there is to learn about boats and motors. The info is quite practical on the proper load distribution in the boat and motor angle adjustment and how it affects performance. It covers maintaining, repairing and even towing the boat (selecting a trailer and tow vehicle).

5 out of 5 stars This is a book of practicalities! An outboard boater's Swiss Army knife of info..........2006-09-22

In a day and age of "bigger is better", Getchell makes the case (and I
must say quite well) for smaller is sweeter.

Oftentimes I will pass on a book because of it's copyright date, assuming
the info in it is now dated and there must be "newer" and better tomes
out there. Yet this one is timeless and shall remain so.

When I bought my first boat roughly 8 years ago, I came across this book in
a bookshop and figured that I could use a little edification on boating. I
couldn't put it down. What I found was a simple large-trade paperback
that gave you enough info on almost any facet of boating as relates to
small (18' or less) outboard boats. Think of it as the Swiss-Army knife
of running/fixing/touring/revamping/etc a small boat. Why aluminum v.
fiberglass? What hull designs work best where? How should I set up my
boat to do boat camping? What are the ins/outs of trailering and boat
launches? How can I tell if that used model is beat to heck? How do I
navigate? What do i do when the weather turns on me? Etc.

I recently purchased an outboard boat again. I also bought this
book, again. There aren't many books I would buy twice.

        Buy it, you'll like it!

5 out of 5 stars Commonsense advice for neophytes and seasoned boaters alike........2005-06-23

Out of all the boating books that I've read over the last few months, nothing comes close to matching Getchell's book.

It is replete with useful information that covers the entire gamut of outboard boating. For example, it was from this book that I learned about the advantages of a portable trailer lightbar. Furthermore, I used the guidelines he presented to make my own.

Experienced boaters may find some of the material a little too basic, but I'd wager that just about everyone will come away with a few pearls of wisdom.

        Happy boating.

5 out of 5 stars The Whole Earth Catalog of small outboard motor boats........1997-10-31

Plain, outspoken, wonderfully opinionated and varied accounts of the what, how and where of small craft. For this blue water sailor and sea kayaker, Getchell's book is a bible. Even a non motor head could understand, and enjoy the 'how ' of operating, buying, cruising, and sleeping on and with a small outboard under twenty feet. This book has now been through too many hands and is worn.....

5 out of 5 stars Sensible and comprehensive book on small power boats........1997-09-22

Covers a wide variety of topics (e.g. selecting, powering, equiping, trailering, maintaining, and sailing) a small (12 to 20 foot)power boat. Excellent for boat owners or those considering buying a boat. I could not find anything as sensible and comprehensive in any of the local libraries
