Book Description
Emphasizes actual structural design, not analysis, of multistory buildings for seismic resistance. Strong emphasis is placed on specific detailing requirements for construction. Fundamental design principles are presented to create buildings that respond to a wide range of potential seismic forces, which are illustrated by numerous detailed examples. The discussion includes the design of reinforced concrete ductile frames, structural walls, dual systems, reinforced masonry structures, buildings with restricted ductility and foundation walls. In addition to the examples, full design calculations are given for three prototype structures.

Important book for Structural Engineers.......2007-01-10
This is an important book to all the structural engineers that will work in seismic areas.
beware of missing pages.......2006-09-06
Superb text, even in 2006. Must-have reference for seismic design of reinforced concrete structures. Contains good depth of info on shear wall design not available in more elementary texts.
If buying used, ask reseller to verify that the book has pages 713 onward (which includes, but is not limited to all references and index) before buying. Apparently, Wiley had a bad run.
Must Have.......2002-10-31
A must have text/reference book for the structural engineering library. Great resources in topics ranging from concete shear wall design to masonry shear wall design. Highly recomended.

Customer Reviews:
"The Book".......2006-11-02
The "Bible" for structural engineers for decades past and present. Updated and a "must have" for the structural design engineer. The place to start when a new problem is encountered.
Useful resource.......2004-03-17
It's a book with many useful information, tables and examples. A really valued reference.
Unit problem.......1999-07-18
This book is quite good but its usability is lost to a great extent because it is not written in Metric units. Also, chapters on computer application are not well written

Customer Reviews:
Give us a sixth edition, please........2004-09-22
Despite the fact that this book was published in 1998 and is based on the 1994 UBC, it is still the best book on masonry design out there for the practicing engineer. As another reviewer notes, it's useless as far as the actual design is ccncerned and it does assume you know a good bit about what you are doing already, but I am at a lost to find a better book for my newbies.
Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook.......2004-05-15
The fatal problem is this book is NOT current to the 97 Uniform Building Code, contrary to the advertised description. It is written for the 94 Code. Therefore, it is useless and dangerous for actual design and permit. This book gives a pretty good tutorial, but asumes the reader to be an engineer already and skips key explanations of the process, showing numbers in formulas without referencing where they came from, what they mean, or what units they are measured in. Too cryptic. The reference data is scattered throughout the book, and often doesn't have a cross-reference, so it took me over an hour to read each page of problem, due to hunt-and-peck for clues. The design examples are fairly good but hard to follow, and the problem questions don't have answers or process to check your work. The subject is so complex that it would be scary to formulate a real life problem. The author left out the seismic factors on foundation design, so the answers are very wrong in earthquake areas. The 97 Code changed greatly from the 94 Code, so you will be struggling to learn erroneous information.
Review of Masonry.......2000-07-28
This book provides a comprehensive explanation detailing the design standards used in masonry. This book is a must have reference guide for those who are in the field of Civil Engineering or design of masonry walls. No C.E. should be without one. It provides a necessary reference just like the AISC Steel Structural Book or any other design code books.

Helpful for designing retaining walls...
Book Description
Updated to Reflect the 2005 ACI Building Code
Now revised to reflect the latest developments in the field, this thoroughly updated Seventh Edition of Chu-Kia Wang, Charles G. Salmon, and José A. Pincheira's Reinforced Concrete Design incorporates the changes in design rules arising from the publication of the 2005 American Concrete Institute (ACI) Building Code and Commentary (ACI 318-05).
Written for students and practicing engineers, the book explains the basic concepts you need to understand and properly apply the ACI Code rules and formulas. Throughout, the emphasis is on the ACI approach involving strength and serviceability "limit states" and factored loads. Detailed numerical examples illustrate the general approach to design and analysis.
New Features
* Load and Strength Reduction Factors: Example problems in all chapters are completely revised using the load and strength reduction factors that now appear in the main body of the 2005 code.
* Unified Design Provisions: The treatment of the Unified Design Provisions for flexure, which are now in the body of the 2005 ACI Code, is thoroughly revised.
* Strut-and-Tie Models: Presents entirely new design provisions using strut-and-tie models, in accordance with Appendix A of the 2005 ACI Code.

WRONG AUTHORS FOR THE 6th EDITION.......2006-09-22
Wayne Anderson is NOT ONE OF THE AUTHORS of the 6TH EDITION of Reinforced Concrete Design. The authors are Chu-Kia Wang and Charles G Salmon
Straight to the Point.......2004-02-22
The discussions were clear and the sample problems hit the bull's eye. I recommend this book to be included in the school library.
GREAT BOOK-MISPELLED TITLE.......2000-12-25
The correct title for this book is "Reinforced Concrete Design" not "Reinforced Cornet Design".
I am not sure what a reinforced "cornet" is?
Excellent Examples.......2000-03-08
This book has excellent examples for thoroughly designing reinforced concrete structural members. It references directly to the ACI code.
Vague and unhelpful.......1999-10-26
This is one of the worst textbooks I've ever bought. At least it's complete at over 1000 pages. The example problems, the heart of a text on engineering, leave MUCH to be desired. More than once the authors have decided to reveal new, and consequently unexplained concepts in the first problems at the chapter's end. That coupled with the fact that the instructor's solution manual contains few actual solutions is unforgivable. Repeatedly I've been forced to guess or assume reasons for the existance of certain calculations. Rarely do the authors explain their reasoning for doing certain things and if they do explain something it's not easily understandable from the text. I wouldn't recommend this text to anyone! If you're thinking about getting this book as a desk reference don't waste your money!
Book Description
With this bestselling book, readers will quickly gain a better understanding of the fundamentals of reinforced concrete design. The author presents a thorough introduction to the field, covering such areas as theories, ACI Code requirements, and the design of reinforced concrete beams, slabs, columns, footings, retaining walls, bearing walls, prestressed concrete sections, and framework. Numerous examples are also integrated throughout the chapters to help reinforce the principles that are discussed.
Customer Reviews:
Lacks depth..........2007-04-10
I'm a practicing engineer in Oregon. I have studied and reviewed concrete foundations for 5-6 years, and this book is lacking in quality depth - particularly with examples. If one wants to go into a graduate-level understanding of reinforced concrete design, this book will leave you disappointed due to the lack of example problems, clear and concise descriptions, and overall quality. James MacGregor's book is far more "complete". The plus for this book is that it at least attempts to cover retaining and foundation structures, but still lacks quality example problems to illustrate what is not too obvious within the ACI code. Quantity is a 5 star, quality is a 2 star, therefore I've given this a 3 star review.

Schaum's Concrete.......2007-09-12
College texts only provide so many good examples and are sparse on the details. Schaum's fills in a large explanatory gap.
Too out-of-date .......2007-08-03
This reference is useful as a review of various types of concrete construction. However, it was last revised in 1993 and refers to the 1989 American Concrete Institute code, so while the content is generally correct, many of the code provisions have since changed.
Buyer Beware.......2005-09-13
An excellent outline for the ACI 89/92 Code. However, it is NOT for the current ACI code! If you are designing with the older version of the Code, this book is great. If you are using the 2002 or 2005 Code, this book is essentially obsolete.
I somehow missed that when I ordered the book.

Need a replacement.......2002-02-15
I bought the original first edition in 1980 to prepare for my P.E. exam. As I work very often with concrete design, this book is a must have. I really wore out my old copy (which I had to go to several stores to find back then) and could never find a new one. Thank you Amazon for this opportunity.
The nice thing is that it is easy to understand, and gives related info on retaining walls, (what I work with, mostly) and soil mechanics.
So after 20 years, I am grateful for this opportunity. One can not say enough about the Schaum's Series. I graduated college 30 years ago next month with a degree in Civil Engineering, and if it weren't for Schaum's (and Cliff's notes for that English Class) I don't know how I would ever have done it.
Agree all the titles that I have had experience with are excellent, simple to understand, and economical, too even though the current prices are more than they were 20-30 years ago when I purchased most of my Schaum's library. Keep up the good work.
Good for beginners as well as practicing engineers.......1999-11-06
This is a nice book on reinforced concrete design. Although it aims mainly to students, you will be benefitted even if you are a practicing engineer. It is mainly written on ACI code on both USCS & SI units, but the book is useful even if you follow some other country's code. It covers all basic & some advanced design concepts. Chapters include - materials, loads, design methods & preocedures, shear, torsion, detailing, servicability, columns, footings, beam, slabs, retaining walls etc. Main asset of the book is that it is very concise, yet covered almost everythin with a good number of solved problems.

Design of FRP and Steel Plated RC Structures: Retrofitting Beams and Slabs for Strength, Stiffness and Ductility

Composites for Construction: Structural Design with FRP Materials
ASIN: 0471487066 |
Book Description
The strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures using advanced fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, and in particular the behaviour of FRP-strengthened RC structures is a topic which has become very popular in recent years. This popularity has arisen due to the need to maintain and upgrade essential infrastructure in all parts of the world, combined with the well-known advantages of FRP composites, such as good corrosion resistance and ease for site handling due to their light weight. The continuous reduction in the material cost of FRP composites has also contributed to their popularity.
While a great amount of research now exists in the published literature on this topic, it is scattered in various journals and conference proceedings. This book therefore provides the first ever comprehensive, state-of-the-art summary of the existing research on FRP strengthening of RC structures, with the emphasis being on structural behaviour and strength models. The main topics covered include:
- Bond behaviour
- Flexural and shear strengthening of beams
- Column strengthening
- Flexural strengthening of slabs.
For each area, the methods of strengthening are discussed, followed by a description of behaviour and failure modes and then the presentation of rational design recommendations, for direct use in practical design of FRP strengthening measures.
Researchers, practicing engineers, code writers and postgraduate students in structural engineering and construction materials, as well as consulting firms, government departments, professional bodies, contracting firms and FRP material suppliers will find this an invaluable resource.
