3 out of 5 stars Prima Guide.......2007-05-08

Prima's guide for Pokemon Colosseum isn't nearly as good as the other guides. However it does give tips on the pokemon trainers you have to battle. What level they are at, type, and prize money. Which you don't get from Nintendo's guide. If just the tip on the pokemon trainers this guide is good, but for everything else Nintendo's walkthrough is alot better.

2 out of 5 stars I remember when the Prima guides for Pokemon games were actually GOOD.......2007-03-17

Prima used to make the best guide on the market for the Pokemon games. Their guide for Red & Blue was phenomenal, and their guide for Gold & Silver was really good, if a bit aggravating (They frequently wouldn't tell you what Pokemon certain trainers had), but since then the quality has gone way down with each guide, until you get to this piece of junk.

Now don't get me wrong, this guide has its uses. But it's missing a lot of information and is filled with inaccuracies, especially with the trainer lineups. It's really handy to know what Pokemon the trainers you're facing will have ahead of time, but not when that information is innaccurate. Sometimes you get lucky and the only problem is that it's the wrong graphic (which happens seemingly every other page), but other times it says a trainer has a Pokemon that he doesn't. There are also some trainers that the guide doesn't even mention, as if they don't exist. The guide says to heal and save in this one part, but it neglects to mention that you have to face a trainer in order to do that.

And don't get me started on the battle reccommendations. There a few lines about what moves to use under each trainer's box, but this information is just plain wrong half the time. It tells you that a certain type is effective against certain Pokemon when it's not. To get a bit technical, if you send out a fire-type Pokemon against a Lombre like the guide says you should in several places, then you deserve to lose that Pokemon to Surf.

Still, it isn't completely useless. The trainer information is handy when it's accurate, and there's a complete Pokedex in the back that has all the moves for all the Pokemon you can get within the game. The listing of items near the back is useless, though, because it doesn't tell you where to get those items, which is especially maddening for the TM's.

Because it does have its uses, I rate it a 2 out of 5.

4 out of 5 stars The best guide for Pokemon Colosseum.......2007-05-08

I gave it four out of five because the guide only tells you if the pokemon trainer has a shadow pokemon and nothing else about the rest of the pokemon they have. Otherwise the guide is great it even gives you a check list so you can hit all the highligts in the game as you go through it. It does give you tips on all the pokemon that the trainers have in the Mt. battle modes both singel and double.

4 out of 5 stars Excellence!.......2004-04-06

Since the Limited Edition Guide isn't listed, I'll say a few things about the ups of that too. This really is the best guide for Pkmn Colosseum, and in the Limited Edition, you get a bunch of extra things: full 3D artbook of all of the Pokemon in the game plus the main characters, a flier that tells you how to enter to win a free Pokemon E-Watch, and a nice case for all of the contents of the package.

If you're looking for just the guide to the game, this product from Bradygames is the best of the best, and if you're willing to spend about $5 extra, you can easily get the above extras for a still-great price. Two thumbs up, Bradygames!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST GUIDE FOR POKEMON COLOSSEUM.......2004-04-01

Bradygames has had a history of both good and bad books. This book is probably the best of their guides. I have the Limited Edition Guide and it ROCKS. It has more info than any other guide out for this great game. The Nintendo Power Guides don't list every detail and many things are out of order. In this guide, you will see nice maps, great strategies for both walkthroughs and trainer battles, and a great pokedex also. For Limited Edition Guide buyers, you will get an exclusive art book, which really doesn't include anything that you can't see for yourself except for some rare drawings of Miror B. (the head honcho of one of the gangs in Colosseum). The guide is just amazing. If you're gonna get a guide, then you must get this one. Not even the Prima Guide equals up to this. See what happens when you get rid of the head Prima Pokemon writer (Elizabeth Hollinger)? GREAT BOOK.

Book Description

A place of grandeur and cruelty, the Colosseum has long excited the imagination of the West. As an example of architecture and public works, the Colosseum is one of imperial Rome's greatest achievements; as the site of gladiatorial battles and the humiliation of Rome's enemies, the magnificent
arena reminds us of the worst excesses of the ancient world.
In this magisterial study, every aspect of the Colosseum is examined, including the demography of the city at the time of its construction; the origins, administration, and staging of gladiatorial contests; the architecture of its interior and exterior, as well as its underground chambers; the
amazing feats of scenery management and hydraulic engineering that allowed it to function; and the history of the Colosseum from the time of its inauguration in A. D. 80 until today.
More than two hundred illustrations--including ancient coins, contemporary photographs, oil paintings and watercolor sketches, diagrams, maps of the ancient city, and aerial views--show not only every aspect of the building as it exists today but how it has been seen or imagined through the
ages. Texts by scholars in the fields of art, architecture, and antiquities--prepared under the direction of the Soprintendenza Archaeologica di Roma--provide the clearest and most complete account ever published of one of the Western world's greatest monuments.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A LAVISH, UNPARALLELED STUDY.......2002-03-15

Few monuments in our world inspire the awe and spur the imagination as does Rome's Colosseum. Even before the compelling Oscar-winning film "Gladiator," millions knew the prominent role this edifice played in history. And, while computer graphic imaging brought a remarkable structure to life in the motion picture, this lavish, unparalleled study restores it once again.

Over 150 color illustrations and 127 black and white images trace the Colosseum from the day of its inauguration in A.D. 80 to the present. It once which covered six acres of land, sat between 12 and 15 stories above ground, and held over 50,000 spectators. Scholars representing art, architecture, and antiquities bring their expertise to an depth look at the gladiators' life and world. As we know, the bloody battles in which they engaged were the original attractions. It is amazing to learn how closely these events parallel contemporary spectacles - the recruitment and training of participants, creating eye-popping scenery, providing wardrobes, ticket sales, etc.

It was only when arguments arose concerning amphitheater games that the fighting came to a halt.

A detailed examination of the building's exterior and interior architecture is included, as well as complete views of the warren of underground areas constructed for gladiators and animals.

Suspecting that their friend Jonathan is not dead, as they had thought, Flavia, Nubia, and Lupus organie an invitation to Rome on the pretence of witnessing this historic event.

Their search for Jonathan leads them straight to the games, where they must face wild beasts, criminals, conspirators, and gladiators. It's Nubia's turn to employ all of ther courage and talens, and before the end of the story she is called upon to make the most terrible choice.

A heart-pounding behind-the-scenes account of gladiator fights, executions and beast fights makes this one of the most exciting Roman Mysteries yet.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Roman Mysteries are amazing books.......2007-08-04

These books are just great for kids who love adventure, excitment and like to learn about history in entertaining way. My kids can't put these books down and now have a real image in their minds of what it was realy like to be a child growing up in this time in history. Kind of scary!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Gladiator Spectacular.......2006-06-27

The Roman mystery series is as good as it gets. Three of the children--Flavia, Nubia, and Lupus, go in search of their friend Benjamin who was last seen during the burning of Rome. Rumor through the city says that a dark, curly haired boy set the fire and Emporer Titus is searching for him. Emporer Titus is also opening the Flavian Amphitheater, now known as the Colesseum, with 100 days of celebration that will include gladiator fights and executions. The three friends find mystery and danger as they search for their best friend. Nubia holds the means to save either Benjamin or her brother, a gladiator, which will she choose? This series is exciting and in the process describes the life in Rome of 80 A.D.

5 out of 5 stars Children's historical fiction at its best.......2006-03-24

If your pre-teen reads this book, she/he may want to run to the nearest bookstore to buy an armful of books on ancient Rome. Not because there's too much in it that's incomprehensible, but because Lawrence makes it a very realistic and compelling world--both the "good" and the "bad." The protagonists--all children--adroitly negotiate a morally difficult world where men, womnen and even children are victims of spectacular (and bloodthirsty) games in the Flavian amphitheater. However, the narration is also quite sensitive to the young reader's possible reactions, and sympathetic views are always heard from at least one character. The subject of personal loss and family tragedy is well explored here. I'm not a a mental health professional, but this books feels like the type that might help a child who has had to cope with the loss of a loved one. I've read every book in the series and as an educator in literature, I highly recommend it, and also the other books in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Another great addition to the Roman Mysterys Series!.......2006-03-13

Flavie, Nubia and Lupus are all mourning the death of their dear friend- Johnthan. But when rumours start spreading of him being alive in Rome, Flavia and Nubia, with Lupus, decided to investigate.

This was once again another great book from Caroline Larence- an amazing author who depicts ancient rome in a truly outstanding way. I enjoyed this book immensely and it is a must-read for any historical fans.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2005-11-28

nUBIA, THIS BOOK IS MaINLY based on her. In rome, the games are startin once again and flavia, lupuis n nubia are all invited. Caroline Lawrence uses her magic once again to enchance the readers in this spectacular book. This is a book that u once start readin, yyoull never be able to put it downm even after yure done with it. It was a brilliant bboook.

Book Description

The Roman Colosseum was the work of a brilliant and energetic civilization. The Roman Colosseum was the work of a cruel and brutal civilization.

Both are true.

The Roman Colosseum was one of the most extraordinary buildings in the ancient world, a work of engineering genius whose design is imitated every time a modern stadium is built. Yet, what went on inside this building is difficult to comprehend.

Over the centuries, tens of thousands of slaves, prisoners of war, and criminals were slaughtered in the Colosseum for the entertainment of over 50,000 cheering fans. So many animals were destroyed in gruesome "hunts" staged in the arena that entire species disappeared from the Roman colonies of North Africa.

The Roman Colosseum interweaves the impressive story of the construction of this remarkable building and the sobering tale of the "games" that went on inside it. In doing so, it reveals an entire civilization in all its genius and its brutality.

Wonders of the World series

The winner of numerous awards, this series is renowned for Elizabeth Mann's ability to convey adventure and excitement while revealing technical information in engaging and easily understood language. The illustrations are lavishly realistic and accurate in detail but do not ignore the human element. Outstanding in the genre, these books are sure to bring even the most indifferent young reader into the worlds of history, geography, and architecture.

"One of the ten best non-fiction series for young readers."

If you are into the history of the Colosseum or aren't you willbe now! This book features excellent quoatations and vividdescriptions of every little aspect you could think of about the Colloseum. But it could have used some more pictures. The author paints a world with excellent detail right down to the size of there shields! Believe me, at first I thought I wouldn't be interested in barbariens fighting but after reading this I needed more! It also tells about the marvelous chariot races and the foreign animals. Book Description

Byron and Hitler were equally entranced by Rome's most famous monument, the Colosseum. Mid-Victorians admired the hundreds of varieties of flowers in its crannies and occasionally shuddered at its reputation for contagion, danger, and sexual temptation. Today it is the highlight of a tour of Italy for more than three million visitors a year, a concert arena for the likes of Paul McCartney, and a national symbol of opposition to the death penalty. Its ancient history is chockfull of romantic but erroneous myths. There is no evidence that any gladiator ever said "Hail Caesar, those about to die..." and we know of not one single Christian martyr who met his finish here.

Yet the reality is much stranger than the legend as the authors, two prominent classical historians, explain in this absorbing account. We learn the details of how the arena was built and at what cost; we are introduced to the emperors who sometimes fought in gladiatorial games staged at the Colosseum; and we take measure of the audience who reveled in, or opposed, these games. The authors also trace the strange afterlife of the monument--as fortress, shrine of martyrs, church, and glue factory. Why are we so fascinated with this arena of death?

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I Really Loved this Book.......2006-10-13

The Colloseum in Rome is arguably one of the five most famous buildings in the world but there are very few books about it. At least I have found that to be the case, as I have always had a fascination for the place. May this is the macabre side of me coming out. But it is not just the gladiatorial contests and many other blood letting contests that went on including wild animals fighting both humans and one another or the naval battles that were fought there. Yes naval battles, with real ships and the arena flooded with water. I readily admit that I find these interesting and have done for many years.

However the main attraction of the Flavian Amphitheatre, to give it its correct name is its architectural beauty. It is a building that we would be hard pressed to replicate today, even with all the modern building techniques that we now possess. A building that could fill with people and empty at the end of the games quicker than most modern football stadiums. A building that has stood the test of time. It is only vibration and pollution from modern day traffic that is now affecting the building more than the last two thousand years ever have.

A building that had more happening underground than ever happened above ground. Gladiator quarters, infirmaries. Lifts and hoists moved by an intricate network of pulleys and cables, that allowed wild animals to be brought up to the arena level.

This book tells you everything you need to know and more. It is well written And has some illustrations, but these are secondary to the excellent text.

4 out of 5 stars Tourists should read.......2006-06-27

This is a rather specialized account of the Colosseum, and any student intending to visit the structure should read it. It debunks some myths about the place, but shows that it is a fascinating world wonder which deserves the attention of all visiting Rome. The research seems impeccable.
