5 out of 5 stars Kosher By Design, the best kosher cookbook series of today!.......2007-09-07

The Kosher By Design cookbook series are one of the best kosher cookbooks of today. The recipes mix modern and traditional cooking together in a most delicious way. Easy to follow recipes and beautiful pictures. I highly recommend this cookbook and any of the other cookbooks in the Kosher By Design series.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for a student or new cook.......2007-09-04

My teenage daughter's friend brought us this book as a house gift. I love it, and I use it quite a bit. I just bought a copy for 21-year-old son, who is starting to cook and entertain. It's great for a new cook, because in addition to being quick, most of the recipes don't require a fully-equipped and stocked kitchen. She also explains well. The pictures are beautiful, and the special sections at the end are fun.

I'm sure that a lot of "foodies" will turn up their noses at this book. I, too, like to make things from scratch, and this isn't a book of five-star gourmet adventures in the kitchen. But I think that the reader who wrote that you could probably make these things a little bit better without using the packaged ingredients, but at the cost of a lot more time, hit the nail on the head. Sometimes you just don't have time to cook the way you really want to do it -- but you still have to eat. I suppose some purists will say it's always better then to go out or just make a sandwich than to cook "Rachael Ray" style. But I think a home-cooked, family style meal is still nice, even with a few shortcuts that you wouldn't take for a special occasion. There is room for both kinds of cookbooks and cooking in my kitchen and in my life.

Besides, not all the recipes are even like that. Many are just plain terrific, even those that do use prepared items. And if you don't want to use, say, a prepared spice blend or sauce, then just "retrofit" the recipe and make your own. I have done that with some recipes, but I have also tried the prepared ingredients a couple of times (e.g., a spice blend that only cost $1), and I was pleasantly surprised by their quality.

My only criticism is that you need to look carefully at her estimated times, which are often overly optimistic. If a recipe calls for, say, a cup of chopped onions, the time for peeling and chopping the onion isn't included in her estimate. I suppose that's fair -- I mean, you could have a bag of chopped onion in your freezer or something -- but you do need to remember to look carefully at the recipe before planning your time.

5 out of 5 stars exceptional.......2007-03-30

I remember the first time I saw photographs of the quilts of Gee's Bend in a magazine about seven years ago. I couldn't wait to learn about the amazing artists whose vision the quilts portray. This book is more outstanding than I imagined it could be. It is powerful, beautiful, sensitive, and historically accurate. I recommend The Quilts of Gee's Bend to anyone with an eye for artistic genius and a love for discovering a community of women willing to express themselves outside the box of convention. How refreshing and inspiring! Simply Exceptional!!

5 out of 5 stars .........a superb keepsake of a memorable trip. .......2007-03-08

Who is more qualified to help provide us with a book about the quilts of Gee's Bend, but Mr. Bill Arnett who has championed the makers of these quilts and their works since 'discovering' them years ago in the tiny community of Gee's Bend about thirty miles southwest of Selma, Alabama?

The quilts first went on tour in 2002 and have been touring ever since. I learned of the ladies of Gee's Bend and their quilts from a PBS documentary first aired in 2003 and have anxiously hoped they would one day come to my part of the country. When, earlier this year, I found the quilts would indeed be coming to the Orlando Museum of Art, I purchased, The Quilts of Gee's Bend: Masterpieces from a Lost Place, documenting the quilts, and the lives of their various makers, with beautiful, full-color illustrations of the quilts.

In February, 2007, when I was finally able to enjoy the quilts in person, I was happy to discover the book had accurately depicted the quilts, and their makers, paralleling an exhibition that should be seen and appreciated by all.

I purchased a copy of The Quilts of Gee's Bend: Masterpieces from a Lost Place, for the art teacher of my children's school. This beautiful book encouraged her to take her middle and high school art students to the exhibition. The book helped the students to first see and read about what they were going to view and then became a superb keepsake of a most memorable trip.

5 out of 5 stars The Quilts of Gee's Bend.......2007-03-08

This is a beautiful book about both the women and the quilts of Gee's Bend. The photos make me feel as if I am back at the Gee's Bend Quilt Show.

5 out of 5 stars Memories which must be kept 'real'.......2007-03-08

This book is already a treasure and one I can love and then bequeath to another art and tradition and people lover...
At the end of October in 2003, I was in Milwaukee to see this Quilt exhibition. Friends of Art from Indiana University drove to Chicago and then on to the marvelous museum in Milwaukee to experience the Quilts. What an awakening! That day I bought a Video. Since that time I have purchased the DVD and (when I found it online) the hardback book The Quilts of Gee's Bend! What a treasure! I am overjoyed to have this book and to have had the viewing experience! [I also use the USPS stamps and the book of postcards!] --Sarah K. Robinson

5 out of 5 stars The Heart and Souls...........2007-01-27

The heart and souls of women are exposed in this poignant book of quilts, along with their "stories" past and present---of slavery on through the civil rights era, and now, life as it is in rural Alabama. The quilts, made out of necessity for their warmth, have become acclaimed Objects d' Art throughout the Art World. Having seen the documentary on television and the Quilt exhibit in San Francisco, I was compelled to purchase this beautiful book containing a compilation of these quilts and self-expressed comments from the community of women who have kept their quilt-making alive. I have purchased this book for myself and several others as gifts.

3 out of 5 stars Not really one for us goyim.......2007-09-15

Reading Kosher By Design brings home a subtle distinction between Jewish food and Kosher food. The latter is the traditional food of Jews as was prepared in their ancestral homelands; the former is food prepared according to Jewish law. This is important, because Kosher By Design is about the latter. As a foodie who was raised Catholic and now identifies as atheist, this is going to color my perceptions of the book substantially.

Most of the recipes in this book are the sorts of things that can be easily found (and, if necessary, trivially modified) in mainstream cookbooks. To call them homey would be a bit of an understatement -- many of these recipes are the sorts of things that would be passed along on scraps of paper between friends. Many of them have a whiff of Sandra Lee about them, using some premade convenience foods here and there (as other reviews have pointed out, this occasionally compromises kosher observance). There is of course a decent amount of Jewish food in there -- there couldn't not be -- though most of it is American Ashkenazic, with a bit of a lack of diversity; even a few token Sephardic or Mizrachi dishes would be a good idea, especially given the author's emphasis on dish presentation. The layout of the book... well, it's not that it's unattractive, it just looks a bit dated, like it was published in 1983 and not 2003.

So, fundamentally, this cookbook has little to recommend it to anyone who doesn't keep a kosher kitchen -- with one big exception. It has very good coverage of all the important Jewish holidays, so for someone who wants to know more about Jewish observances, this is actually pretty good for that purpose. But to a more general audience... well, let's put it this way. If you happen not to have a diabetic in your family or circle of friends, you'll have little use for a diabetic cookbook, as virtually everything in there is a modification of something you can find elsewhere in an unmodified form. This book is much the same thing, which is not to say you might not find a few recipes you'd like despite not having a kosher kitchen, but it's definitely a look-before-buy proposition for a goyish buyer. It's not a bad book; it's just rather specialized.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty Pictures, No Substance.......2007-01-04

I purchased this book because everyone in the community was gaga over it. What I found when I actually looked at it was that all it is is a bunch of pretty pictures and that's the big wow. Sure, the recipies are good, but they're not "Oh my G-d!" like everyone is about this book. It's got menues and organization tips. All in all, I'd say that this is a good book for someone who is young and just getting married who has never had to cook meals before. If you are an advanced cook who likes to make your own menues, is familiar with other recipies that are similar, and enjoys challenging recpies, this is not the book for you. It was sort of a disapointment. It's mostly hype.

5 out of 5 stars I Like It.......2006-03-20

I think this is a great book for the kosher cook, and the price is fantastic - the lowest I've seen. The recipes are great, and the book is really beautiful. Would make a great gift for anyone who keeps kosher.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent cookbook - the best there is.......2006-02-23

Great tasting easy to make and beautiful recipes! Total delight!

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre recipes with intensive preparation.......2005-12-11

The recipes in this book are not in the least unique: there is nothing in these books not found in the standard modern cookbooks such as the New Joy of Cooking or Silver Palette. What differentiates these recipes is the superfluous use of packaged foods, such as boxed Italian dressing powder (which is basically salt and common spices), which actually makes them less friendly to the kosher cook since they may not be available supervised. Fishbein puts all her energy into the Design of the food, for instance suggesting that you buy individual pumpkins for each of your 16 sukkot guests in which to serve soup, or that you serve your Shavuot meal entirely out of flowerpots, or that you have different set of dishes for each of the holidays. These little tips do make amusing reading, but for that you can check the book out from the library.

4 out of 5 stars Another beautiful book in this great series.......2007-08-11

I'm addicted to Mexican style, colors, and design aesthetics. This newest book in the "Mexi-" series focuses entirely on kitchens. The photos are profuse with color, light, and (if you love this stuff the way I do) decorating ideas!

As a bonus, if you own all the books in this series (Mexicolor, Mexicasa, In a Mexican Garden, and Mexicocina), they themselves become a terrific Mexican-style design accent placed together on your bookshelf. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Informative, 'Ole!.......2007-04-05

I ordered Mexicocina because I was looking for decorating ideas for my kitchen. But, I found so much more! This book is not only equipped with beautiful Mexican kitchens, but also the history behind the kitchens, and tasty recipes. Me and my husband's favorite country to visit is Mexico. This book gave us some great information on bed and breakfasts in different areas of Mexico.

This is a great coffee table book too!

Thank you,
Adrianna

5 out of 5 stars A Functional Coffee Table Book !.......2007-01-11

My husband and I are building a new home in Mexico and wanted to make sure we kept it as authentic as possible, thus the book orders. This particular book is filled with spectacular photos of Mexican kitchens ranging from the most spectacular to the more common. Each page is filled with building ideas as well as decorating inspirations. Who would have thought of collecting beautifully carved wooden spoons for a wall display ! The authors include much narrative explaining background of the kitchens and various decorations/selections, as well as history. Everyone will enjoy the brilliant colors and artwork as each page is turned.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Tour of the Kitchens of Mexico.......2007-01-10

The pictures are glorious and the text is very well written, concise and informative. I have travelled to many of these kitchens with Betsy McNair and it's like taking the tour all over again. There's no better guide to Mexico than Ms. McNair. She really knows the history and the people. If you can't go with her in person then the book is the next best thing.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely book!.......2006-12-30

As a traveler who has been fortunate enough to experience lots of Mexican feasts in many a cocina, I found this book to bring back happy memories of many fantastic meals and parties. The photographs are lovely and Ms. McNair's descriptions bring each one to life. I especially liked that many recipes are included, including one for chiles en nogada, for which I have been searching for an authentic recipe! Highly recommended for anyone who has an affinity for all things Mexican, especially, the heart of the home!

Two world wars, the Civil Rights movement, and a Jheri curl later, Blacks in America continue to have a complex and convoluted relationship with their hair. From the antebellum practice of shaving the head in an attempt to pass as a "free" person to the 1998 uproar over a White third-grade teacher's reading of the book Nappy Hair, the issues surrounding Black hair linger as we enter the twenty-first century.Tying the personal to the political and the popular, Hair Story takes a chronological look at the culture behind the ever-changing state of Black hair-from fifteenth century Africa to the present-day United States. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bravo.......2007-08-12

Excellent book about black hair and black culture. Would recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about both and how they relate to the "American" ideal.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Black Women Everywhere.......2007-07-05

I've recently made the decision to go natural and as I did, I pondered, "Why do I have to 'decide' to be the way I naturally am?" It was then that I realized how unfortunate it was that black women, more than half, find their "naturalness" to be unattractive. I myself have gone through hair extensions, braids, and the dreaded relaxer that has damaged my hair and scalp for years. Now I wonder what it was all for. I wasn't being true to who I was.

This book helped be to know something that I should have already known: my hair. The history of black hair is one that is very interesting and telling. I learned more about my hair in this book than I have ever learned, even from members of my own family. There is also a sense of confidence one gets from reading books like these. I am letting all of my friends and family read it as well.

You will not be disappointed in your purchase.

4 out of 5 stars A beginning..........2007-01-10

This book is great begining for people that are redescovering themselfes aftermaking the decision or are trying to decide wheter go natural or not. It helps you to understand how we got here , how black beauty is not well accepted and why. It make you wonder, questionning yourself and others, and in my case keep learning.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2006-11-19

If you don't already know, this book is definitely worth the time that it takes to read. The book goes into detail about the history of Black hair. Prior to slavery, Africans took pride in their hair. The intricate braid designs date back to that time. It wasn't until after the slave trade that hair straightening became common. Also, it's a little known black history fact that Annie Tumbo Malone was the first black woman entrepeneur to market black hair products. Madame CJ Walker actually worked for Malone before going into business for herself. This book chronicles so much history about Black hair. After reading this book, I was really encouraged to stop chemically processing my hair.

5 out of 5 stars Every Black Woman Needs to Read This.......2005-10-07

I love this book so much. Ayana Byrd really did a thorough job in researching both the psycological and spiritual elements involved in this subject of "Black Hair".

We as African American women are so misguided sometimes about what's beautiful. We've been so scarred from distorted generational beliefs that we've allowed the insecurity of ourselves and the fear of loving who we are to become deeply rooted in our spirits. We listen to those beliefs, accept them, and then pass them down to our daughters to let the cycle of ignorance continue.

I personally had to read this book a few times while I was going through my own journey of growing out my naturally tight curls - just constantly trying to cleanse my spirit and renew my mind in what I considered beautiful. After reading this book, I realized that God wanted me (needed me) to stop relaxing my hair with chemicals, and to start embracing His wonderful creativity of me - to accept myself (including my hair) the way he designed so that I can love myself the way He loves me.

Every Black Woman needs to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Eastern sock parade!.......2000-10-01

Aspiring and experienced Eastern sock fanatics! This is your book! Full color photos and charts and sketches of how to knit Eastern socks. Shows many historical beauties in enough detail to copy. Here are my thoughts on knitting these socks. They are dreamy and historically compelling--but the foot of yesterday's Eastern women is shaped totally different than my foot. I need Western socks with western shaping. Would I ever knit a pair of these socks? Why sure--when I die and go to knitting heaven and get 20/20 vision and magic knitting needles that lead my hands to create these art socks. Do I reccomend this book? Of course. I've spent many wonderful afternoons in the hammock with this book, dreaming which ones I'll knit. I usually pick the Eastern Anatolian stockings as I think the lovely russet shadings will look great on my feet as I hop from cloud to cloud. Now--down to earth ! The best part of this book is there are directions for minature samplers of the major sock styles in this book. You could knit these as a collection and display them as an art grouping--or sew them into quilt squares for a stunning wall hanging. I think it's a very pratical application if you desire to try your hand at knitting these intricate designs successfully. This is a beautifully well thought out book and has given me many hours of pleaure reading and viewing these socks and the directions for making them. :)Miz Socks Cox

5 out of 5 stars Not just about knitting socks!.......1999-06-02

I'd recommend this book to anyone who's been knitting for a while and wants to learn new techniques - NOT "just" sock knitters. It's certainly not a "how to knit" book, but it covers subjects that could improve any knitter's technique.

The subject of the book is the Art of sock knitting, as practised in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The Art section of the book is well researched and well presented. The pictures make it fun to read.

The focus of the book is on the Craft by which these works of art are created. This book includes a compendium of cast on techniques, analysis of knitting styles, detailed instruction on how to spin yarn which will wear well and maintain its shape, and great information on designing, especially with multiple colors.

The section on knitting intarsia (multiple colored pictures) IN THE ROUND is worth the cost of the book by itself. There are multiple options for shaping toes and heels, and for solving typical sock knitting and fitting problems as well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, thorough book about Central Asian socks.......1999-03-13

This is a wonderful book if you've become fascinated with knitting socks. Priscilla covers the traditional, knit from the toes up socks of Central Asia. She also covers spinning your own yarn, East/West hybrids, and working sample socks to learn the techniques.

The book is well written, well laid out and the socks are fabulous! It covers some of the same territory as Fancy Feet and Anatolian Socks, but I'd recommend this book if you could only have one!

4 out of 5 stars What's Missing.......2007-05-12

This is indeed a beautiful book, but it is also maddening! A full length color photo of each garment should have been included to demonstrate how the detail relates to the whole and the black and white line drawings don't do it.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and well laid out.......2006-10-11

This book features pictures of details from extant ethnic costumes from more than fifty countries. Next to each picture is a flat (line drawing) of the whole garment, which allows you to see construction and some stitching details, as well as the overall shape. Descriptions alongside each flat include mention of the gender, class, time period, and ethnicity of a person who might wear the garment, as well as a context in which they might do so.

The organization is a little odd, since it relates to the particular detail featured (e.g. "Necklines", or "Pleats and Gathers") but the index allows a search by place, which is very helpful. It also includes a map, glossary, and suggestions for further readings. Students interested in cultural dress will enjoy this brief introduction, though for more in-depth studies of a region, they should look into other resources.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, excellent text.......2005-12-29

This is one of the most gorgeous and inspirational dress/costume books I've ever seen. The photos are clear, detailed, and focus on all the right things. If you're looking for design ideas or just eye candy, this fits the bill. It's a pity amazon.com doesn't remove the one-star review. His complaint has nothing to do with the book itself--just poor HTML linking on amazon's part. This book deserves to have a solid five-star rating. (6/9/06--I'm happy to see the one-star review was removed)

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational for sewers and designers of Wearable Art!.......2005-09-29

Dress in Detail from around the world is one of the most inspirational books I have purchased. It expands your paradigm for designing your own patterns using the line drawings of these costumes. The embellishments, closures and use of multiple fabric combos is endless. The designs are simple and yet elegant depending on your choice in fabric. I feel they are adaptable to many figure types. I loved the focus of detail on necklines and cuffs as well as closures!

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-09-15

This is a wonderful resource for costuming. The detail photos are excellent. The only thing that could make it better would be more photos.

5 out of 5 stars SURPRISED WITH NUMBER OF PAGES.......2005-10-26

My brother-in-law has the exact same title book, his book has over 600 pages! I ordered the book thinking that I would get a similar copy at a great price. I did not realize that I was purchasing an condensed version. The information in the book, although somewhat sparse is good. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment.......2005-10-04

A few years back I signed up for a class in silversmithing which soon became addictive. In addition to that interest, I have always been interested in primitive art such as that of the American Indians, the cave drawings, Australian Aboriginal art or spiritual drawings. These forms of spirituality and art or of art are very powerful. I have chosen to concentrate my silversmithing designs toward the designs I see from these primitive peoples. The book, North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment has proven to be very helpful toward that aim. In addition to that, it's just plain good reading.

4 out of 5 stars One quibble/caution.......2004-05-24

This gorgeous book is indeed indispensable, especially if "read" visually. Unfortunately, quite a few of the tribal attributions for historic objects (information given to the author by museums) are wrong. Given the scope of this project, Dubin had little choice but to take often out-dated info at face value rather than do her own research. However, readers should keep this caveat in mind when using this work as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have!.......2004-05-16

This book is a must-have for anyone serious about studying Native American cultures. It is a fun read, while still being absolutely crammed with information. It's clear the author put in a lot of time and work to master her subject. Not to mention, the artwork featured in the book is beautiful. I love to breeze through it when I've had a hard day, just to feel my spirits lift looking at such amazing works of art. You will learn so much and enjoy the journey enormously.

5 out of 5 stars superb, magnificent.......2003-07-02

this book could easily inspire a life of crime--how else to afford the gorgeous contemporary jewelry? or acquire the museum quality antique and archeological collections?

as a knitter, embroiderer and beader, i am always looking for inspiration for my pieces. i may stoop to outright plagarism when it comes to the works in this incredible book. though i will say that i can only dream of having the level of skill the pieces display. the craftmanship, the artistry, are humbling when one considers the tools the artists had--and the reservation conditions under which too much of the art was created.

the text is wonderfully informative, if you can force yourself to read it, instead of allowing yourself to be mesmerized by the photos.

follow the advice of the professional review--buy this book immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Indespensable.......2006-02-19

Quite frankly I think every student of Yoruba culture should own this book. While Gelede is the central object of study, the books touches on multiple aspects Yoruba and Orisa spirituality. The amount of information is so overwhelming that you will literally have to read it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book.......2000-12-06

I do recommend this nice book to all those engaged in the practice of the Yoruba cult. The author gives a good persp- ective of what is behind the cerimony. Mo juba Iyami Osoronga!

4 out of 5 stars Worth reading for student & practitioners of Yoruba religion.......1998-06-22

This is a fairly good book on the subject of Yoruba masks and drumming. Contains good pictures of masks (Gelede) and is very informative with regards to ceremonies performed at the Gelede.

Is recommended reading for any of the followers of the Yoruba religion and to students as well.

I would have liked to have seen a more in depth review of the ceremonies and religious aspects of the Gelede, therefore I have not rated it a 5 Star.

Nonetheless, I would still read it all over again !

In a perfect world, all social events would be as elegant and gracious as the parties on display in Entertaining with Southern Style. Alas, not many of us have the ways and means of transporting embroidered pillows and tapestries to provide a backdrop for a riverside curried picnic, and if we do manage to have friends over for cocktails, a professional bartender may be a bit out of the price range. But for those hosts and hostesses willing to put forth the effort to have "the mostest," this glossy and gorgeous tome will provide inspiration for genteel living. Divided into six basic chapters, everything from furniture to flowers is covered, with specific attention paid to themed parties and a variety of special occasions. Lush photos cover every page--this is not a "less is more" mentality, and attention is paid to the tiniest detail. Tables are decorated with antique linens and lace, and party favors are included at every place setting. A charming idea for a summertime favor is a small herb plant in a terracotta pot; less ideal are the antique gardening implements tucked into napkins--this seems to present an opportunity for painful injury. Those who do not hail from the South may find a few small details a bit unusual--there is no mention of tequila in the "fully stocked bar" list, and Christmas scenes display a notable lack of the snow we expect in cooler climes. These differences aside, those who take their entertaining seriously will develop a fond attachment for this book. The stylists and editors have achieved a unique and glamorous style with little of the intense "do it yourself" mentality presented by popular New Englanders, and the book is resplendent with the unique charms and possibilities of "southern style." --Jill Lightner

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Southern Style.......2000-12-16

In the editorial review the reviewer writes "In a perfect world, all social events would be as elegant and gracious as the parties on display in Entertaining with Southern Style...Alas, not many of us have the ways and means." While I agree with that statement, I must say as a born and bred Southerner, I know that not everyone in the South has the ways and means to put on these lavish parties, but what Southerners do have is a true hospitality and graciousness that comes cross in entertaining. This is the essence of Entertaining with Southern Style and it comes across beautifully through the pages of this book.
