Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Product Description

The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants: The First Ten Years 1994 - 2004 is a high quality art book featuring the artistic journey of the legendary game company Oddworld Inhabitants from its first ten years - from Lorne Lanning's vision of the first Oddworld hero in 1994 to the present. The book is an extraordinarily high quality fine art production depicting the story of the art and vision of Oddworld and how the company approaches the art/design process. It also shows how the design process maintained the highest standards of creativity and quality while evolving a coherent universe populated with characters that expressed rich and unforgettable personalities. Filled with stunning examples of beautiful artwork including production design sketches, color roughs, storyboards, game screens and CG/FMV stills, The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants takes us through an incredible gallery of astonishing images. Finally, the book unveils Oddworld Inhabitants art that has never been seen before. "Since Sherry McKenna and I founded Oddworld Inhabitants back in 1994, we have eagerly anticipated the moment when a densely packed and finely printed 'Art of Oddworld' book would find life," said Lorne Lanning, President/Creative Director of Oddworld Inhabitants. "Finally, and only a decade later, the day has come for us to reveal the seldom witnessed pre-production efforts of the incredibly talented artists that have given so much of their energy and talent (not to mention late nights and weekends) in effort to create the uniquely odd universe that has since found its way into millions of hearts and homes throughout the globe. This collection of work not only reflects the intense artistic effort that has gone into the creation of our heroes and their plights, but it also reveals the visual fuel that hung on our walls and continually inspired us as we stumbled our way through the trials and tribulations that litter the hazardous crossroads where creative artistry and free enterprise collide."

5 out of 5 stars My Thoughts.......2007-09-18

I received my copy of this book today, and I'm very satisfied with it.
Sure, its expensive, but I guess thats a reasonable price for a 250¬ or so pages book filled with high quality images.

There are lots of interesting descriptions and fun facts about the games and the company, and many nostalgic (and never seen before, as far as I know) and artistic images.

If you enjoyed this series of games, then this is a book you'd want to buy.

5 out of 5 stars GET THIS!!.......2007-03-23

From the moment you take a look at this book, you know what's in stored for you. The paper is high quality, and the images are awesome!! Each chapter is discussed on the progression of the game and how the art influenced the way it was made.
There are so many concept images in here that'll give you a deeper understanding on why the Oddworld games have been so successful. My apologies if I'm repeating myself. There's just so much to this book that can't be explained in words.

Each page is beautifully printed in vibrant colors and every page is laid out perfectly. After reading and looking at this book, I HAD to go back and find my old PS1 games for this and play it just to appreciate it. Although the price is a bit much, it is worth every penny, and this is coming from someone who's been working in art for a very long time.

5 out of 5 stars second to none.......2006-11-04

As art books go, this is simply as good as it gets. The book is beautifully printed, the pages are large and vivid, and the art is simply second to none. Aside from that, there's just nothing more to say. If you like the Oddworld games, or you just like good art, you can't go wrong here. It's very, very hard to imagine an art book being any higher quality than this.

5 out of 5 stars Go on a journey with Abe and friends!.......2006-03-02

What can i say? This is a beautiful, beautiful book. You cannot miss on this one. Love the game? There is plenty of info about the creation of the characters, enviroments. Love design and artbooks? The illustrations and CG work in this book are excellent. Love books in general? The quality of the prints are stunning. I own this book for about a week now and there hasn't been a day that i haven't wandered around in Oddworld. I bet it will stay that way for a while. Go ahead and take this journey too.

I'm very happy with this book. I lived and worked in the Netherlands for 6 months and reading this book after being there is very funny! Everything that I criticized is written in this book but in a very funny way! I recommend this book to everyone that is going to live in the Netherlands for more than one month and to everyone that lived or still lives there. Hilarious!

5 out of 5 stars Reason for laughter!.......2007-09-06

As a dutch woman, being married to an american man, this book came in very handy! For my husband it was a tool that gave him much needed information about the dutch culture and habits that made him think how we could function without losing our minds. To me, it was a reason for lots of hysterical laughter throughout the book. The descriptions and details are amazing and so very true, but the reason they made me laugh is because I never thought of them being typically dutch. If you get a view of yourself through the eyes of an american, it can be quite an eye opener. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-08-17

I read this book when I first met my now husband. I laughed threwout the whole book and was really curious about amny other things..like the toilet situation! Well 2 1/2 years later we are living in the netherlands! I have to say the book does hold true to many things it has said and although it takes some getting used to..dutch people are wonderful. You have to be open minded when you come here or you wont enjoy it. I jumped when I first saw the toliet with a shelf on it flush!LOL I was taken back when I had to pay to go to the bathroom and loved how you were left alone to talk and visit while in a resturant..no waitress shoving a check in your face and asking if you need anything else every 5 mins. Yep I do love it here..I miss my american mayonaise though and different flavored sodas..no rootbeer! Anyway, visit here..it's beautiful,so many things to see and do and wonderful foods to try!

5 out of 5 stars Tongue in cheek.......2007-08-12

This book was a recommended to us by a citizen of the Netherlands as a means of gaining a better understanding of her country. At first, I was confused by the writer's style until I realized it was a very tongue-in-cheek description of the country. I found it most helpful in separating facts from legends of the country and its people. If read in conjunction with a more serious book "Culture Shock" by Hunt Janin & Ria van Eil, it should prepare you as much as you can to visit the a culture not your own.

5 out of 5 stars The Undutchables: An Observation of the Netherlands, Its Culture and Its Inhabitants.......2007-07-17

I've business relations with the Dutches for more than 15 years, and along this time I've made some Dutch friends as well. Although of course that the book is/was written by the point of view of someone from another culture with all the differences that exist among all the most varied cultures all over the world, undoubtedly Colin White & Laurie Boucke captured with their finest sense of humour the so called "Dutch Way" and all the particularities of the Netherlanders, sweetly called cloggies in the book.
The cloggies are really quite 'particular' and because of that I love them! And love Holland that seems to be my 2nd home country!

In his third book, Robert Sullivan leaves the wilds of the (Meadowlands and the rough whaling waters of the Pacific Northwest to take up rat-watching in the alleys of New York City. Sullivan learned to appreciate the rodents during nocturnal stakeouts; a night-vision scope helped him observe rats without scaring them. As in his previous books, Sullivan uses pointillist details rather than broad portraiture to paint his subject, and the details in Rats are devilish. There are plenty of facts in the book to make your skin crawl, such as a description of the greasy skids rats leave on the paths they frequent, and a list of garbage items they prefer to eat. But Sullivan's style is often less that of a nature writer than a historian. In personable, essayish chapters, New York's history is revealed to be particularly ratty, with tall tales about the rodents' disgusting accomplishments going back to the city's founding. Although many people have never seen a rat outside a pet store, Sullivan reminds us that they are our constant neighbors, staring out from dim corners and messy crevices with beady eyes and twitching whiskers. --Adam Fisher

Book Description

The New York Times bestseller, now available in paperback with an all-new afterword by the author.

Love them or loathe them, rats are here to stay-they are city dwellers as much as (or more than) we are, surviving on the effluvia of our society. In Rats, the critically acclaimed bestseller, Robert Sullivan spends a year investigating a rat-infested alley just a few blocks away from Wall Street. Sullivan gets to know not just the beast but its friends and foes: the exterminators, the sanitation workers, the agitators and activists who have played their part in the centuries-old war between human city dweller and wild city rat. Sullivan looks deep into the largely unrecorded history of the city and its masses-its herds-of-rats-like mob. Funny, wise, sometimes disgusting but always compulsively readable, Rats earns its unlikely place alongside the great classics of nature writing.

4 out of 5 stars Gives You Something to Gnaw On.......2007-06-17

Sullivan spent a whole season of nights sitting quietly in a New York alley, waiting for the rats to come out - so he could observe them and record their activities. When I read this premise, I slapped myself. Why hadn't I thought of that!? I'm a night-owl. I have rats in my alley. It goes to show how there are subjects for best-selling books right under all of our noses, if we would only seize the opportunity.

Sullivan did end up with some interesting observations of these much-maligned denizens of our garbage piles. But I don't think he discovered anything that animal behaviorists hadn't already known.

Then he ranged outside of his alley to interview all sorts of people connected with rats. He interviewed City exterminators. He confirmed the myth of the "rat king" by tracking down reports of people who had witnessed hordes of rats, seemingly led by one burly individual rat, flowing purposefully across City streets, towards some objective known only to themselves.

But I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more information about rats here. The repertoire of behavior they exhibited in that alley was rather limited, so Sullivan frequently pads his book with sidetracks - about the history of the alley he'd chosen as his observation post - about bygone New York pols and personalities. I would have preferred that he stick more with the rats in order to discover some of their secrets.

For example, I would have liked him to provide a theory about how they manage to eat so much garbage and not get sick. Do they have some bacteria or enzyme that allows them to digest stuff that human beings can't, or at least squeamishly think they can't? Or do rats in fact frequently get sick? I found myself urging Sullivan to peer deeper into their burrows to check for ill and aging rats, to pry more into their personal lives in general. But he doesn't venture into those recesses, either personally or with any high-tech equipment. I suppose those more penetrating studies are best left to the scientists. Sullivan was just a man out on a New York night, looking at things most people want to overlook.

He does supply a good list of references for readers who want to pursue the subject further. Included in this list is a website address where the reader can join up with any of various local "Rat Fancier" clubs. Many of these clubs are looking for organizers, for leaders to arrange meetings. So a person could in effect take charge and himself become a "Rat King."

2 out of 5 stars Reads like 20 New Yorker articles thrown together.......2006-12-21

This is a curious book. To start with, it is short. Without the Notes section, it is about 220 pages. There is no index or photographs or illustrations. The text has the feel of a random selection of magazine articles thrown together. There is an attempt to hold the whole thing together with the author's own personal observations of rats in an alley in lower Manhattan, but the author tends to spend more time discussing what he was wearing or drinking than about the actual rats in the alley. I am fairly certain that you could rearrange many of the chapters in virtually any order and the book would not significantly change. The writing style is occasionally humorous but for the most part seems like an attempt to be erudite rather than an actual success.

As to what you will actually learn about rats, there is very little here. You will learn more by going to Wikipedia, and the writing there is no worse. Many of his "facts" are prefaced by, "According to one study...", "By one estimate...", "One rat expert theorizes...". This might not be too bad if the source of these "facts" were cited but they aren't so there is no way to verify any of the information provided. And when an author is making fairly outrageous claims such as that one-third of the world's food supply is eaten by rats, the reader would like some support other than just the author's word. Also, the author tells us early on that there are only about 400,000 rats in New York but then he interviews an "expert" that he admires who tells us that there are millions of rats living deep under the city who never come to the surface. Is there any support for this? Is it 400,000 or millions? And even when he gets his facts right he gets them wrong. For example, the author writes about the rats link to the Black Death but fails to note that the Brown rat that is in the city is not the rat that carries plague and in fact, probably can't carry plague. The rat of the Black Death was the Black Rat which is not the rat the author is writing about.

Which brings up the side trips on the journey. Almost anyone in New York who has something to do with rats is a potential target for a chapter. Many of these people are not the least bit interesting and the claims they make are unsupported by any evidence but the author simply reports them as fact. His writing fails to cover any subject in any depth. He writes a chapter about John DeLury, for example, who was the head of the sanitation worker's union in the 1970's with very little detail beyond what you would expect in a typical obituary. And then he ends the short chapter with excitement that a friend of a friend is a grandson of DeLury. Ho-hum. He tries to interview people who might remember so-and-so who had some remote link to rats years ago but the interviews go nowhere. A typical response he gets is, "I didn't know him personally but I understand that people spoke highly of him." Excuse me? Why is this even worth writing down? Is the author that desperate to pad his book?

Overall the book does not educate the reader about rats, does not provide much in the way of historical detail, and barely entertains. I would not recommend that anyone waste their time on it.

5 out of 5 stars Eeek! Fascinating!.......2006-09-19

I love rats. I love Manhattan. I too have seen Central Park's "squirrels" in broad daylight. That seems to mean that New York City's rats are operating both a night and a day shift. I suppose that would be kind of creepy anywhere else but rats are certainly not the scariest things I have encountered in Central Park.
Mr. Sullivan writes a very compelling and well researched book about the city's rats. Some of the most interesting passages are observations of an actual city rat pack watched by the author. Many researchers take to the jungle, savannah or ocean to watch and record the behavior of wild animals. Mr. Sullivan stays in the city and studies his subjects from an urban alley.
Readers will find themselves knowing more about rats and Manhattan than they imagined. I'm a longtime keeper of domestic rats & I was both surprised and pleased to learn things that gave me insight into my pet's behavior. And I am still a frequent visitor to Manhattan!

This book is wonderfully written and recommended to anyone that
is considering incorporating a rat or two in to their family.
The history of rats is fascinating. Knowing more about the rat family will make you a better pet person.

5 out of 5 stars Hi Rat!.......2006-08-14

The title is backward, this is primarily a book about observation. I think the author said it best in the afterword when he remarks only half-joking that his next books will be about pretty flowers, as many readers couldn't come to grips with the topic of study. Why not study rats? They are as valid a topic as any other and far more interesting than most. However, that the author chose to center the observation on rats is, surprisingly, almost an aside. What is utterly fascinating is the depth of knowledge that can be gained from disciplined observation and research--even if it largely takes place in a forgotten, grimy, rat-infested alley.

This book is a journey to understanding--not just of rats, but of the city in which the author lives. Of course, New York is the stand in for modern civilization itself. Curiously, the author has uncovered a disturbing truth--we are very similar in many respects to rats in terms of resourcefulness and adaptability. It is also a wonderfully personal book in that the author maintains an often hilarious, personal dialogue with his reader. The writing is carried off so well that one may easily forget that there is real craft involved.

Our author brings a mordant wit to his observations; the humor hits you fast and on many levels. What appears to be merely a fascinating glossary of ratty facts ends up becoming a surprisingly deep commentary on the nature of history itself; from the rise and fall of civilizations to the witness of even the Rat King being brought low by the inevitable exterminators. It strikes me that the author didn't quite realize the power of his observations until well after he completed the book as well as a multi-city book tour. For this reason, the afterword is required reading.

I could go on, but suffice it to say that this book deserves five solid stars. The writing is praiseworthy and a pleasure to read. Mr. Sullivan takes his reader from loud laughter to profound reflection--and does it in the context of a rat report. Well done and highly recommended.

      Book Description

Few words are needed in sending this little book out into the world. It is designed to meet the public demand for a simple exposition of Theosophical teachings. Some have complained that our literature is at once too abstruse, too technical, and too expensive for the ordinary reader, and it is our hope that the present series may succeed in supplying what is a very real want. Theosophy is not only for the learned; it is for all. Perhaps among those who in these little books catch their first glimpse of its teachings, there may be a few who will be led by them to penetrate more deeply into its philosophy, its science, and its religion, facing its abstruser problems with the student's zeal and the neophyte's ardour. But these Manuals are not written only for the eager student, whom no initial difficulties can daunt; they are written for the busy men and women of the work-a-day world, and seek to make plain some of the great truths that render life easier to bear and death easier to face. Written by servants of the Masters who are the Elder Brothers of our race, they can have no other object than to serve our fellow-men.

      5 out of 5 stars A True Clairvoyant's Vision!.......2005-09-23

Reading CWL is like walking onto a cloud or getting lost in a dream. He literally takes you in alternate universes of thought and once you wake up, you are never the same again. Leadbeater is a must read for every occult student and this book is a good one!

3 out of 5 stars Good regarding content but bad on reprint.......2005-09-14

This book suffers badly by the fact that it looks as it has been copied in a copy machine and then bound in a flashy cover. It is almost impossible to read in places. It should definitely have been rewritten and republished.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2005-08-29

This book gives a great overall description of the astral plane. It's descriptive, interesting and easy to understand.

      5 out of 5 stars Manual No.5.......2002-06-08

Among adepts this remarkable book is simply refered to as "Manual No.5" (that was it's old Theosophical Society designation.) When it was penned in 1894 this book was unique. This is because prior to that time all books on the subject were traditionlly written in an obscure and metaphorical manner. Bishop Leadbeater changed all that- he took 19th century scientific objectivism and applied it to the most mystical and subjective of studies. The result is a virtual Baedecker (travel book) of the astral realms. As a result this was the first modern English language text to be included in the permanent collection of the Brotherhood. This book opened, and continues to open, doors.

Briefly, this little volume, covers: scenary, inhabitants, and phenomena of the astral realm. Since this is the realm most closely in contact with our own it can be a most useful and practical guide book. For instance, you will find summarised here more real facts on black magicians, elementals, shades, vampires, and werewolves than in many thicker, more modern volumes. Indeed, a pocket sized hard cover of this manual is quite convenient to carrry at all times as a review, and passport....

      5 out of 5 stars Good Explanation.......2002-05-18

This book is great in all aspects. I wish the book could go into more detail, but it's delibrately a short essay. A great overview of the astral plane. I wonder how this compares to Steve Richards book?

        5 out of 5 stars Little-known work by a well-known author.......2005-07-15

Jacques Casanova De Seingalt is best known as a lover, seducer, and autobiographer. I was surprised to find that he was a writer of other works as well. The Icosameron, a story told over twenty days, is a remarkable example. It's a fictional account of a brother and sister's eighty-year stay in a strange civilization on the inner surface of a hollow Earth.

Much has been said about Casanova's seventeenth century foretelling of self-powered cars, poison gas, and other modern creations. There is also much to say about how his notorious promiscuity shapes this fiction. Brother/sister coupling is taken for granted, for one thing. For another, the natives lactate but nursing is a daily and necessary exchange between adults. I can only imagine how the author wished daily intimacy of similar kind for himself.

I was more interested in other points, however. One was the clockwork regularity of the world. For the human visitors and their descendants, that included annual child birth, accurate down to the day, to the one day shared by mothers and childbearing daughters of whatever generation. I suppose you could call it their combined Labor Day and Mother's Day. Though otherwise inattentive to the women, Casanova noted that the men made competent midwives - partly because of the women's Edenic ease of birth, and partly because all the women were otherwise occupied. The narrator's own wife repeated this annual feat forty times, bearing healthy twins each time. It was a staggering feat of fecundity, and one repeated in the early generations of their descendants.

Casanova also seemed to take it as natural that humankind would colonize and dominate this world, despite its incumbent population. The women's rapid-fire fertility was almost a divine intervention to ensure rapid replacement of the natives. Along those lines, the narrator also introduced gunpowder and guns to this Eden. Nominally, they were used only to drive the snakes out of the fruit trees and gardens (!). The author took a miserly glee in the sheer mass of his arsenal, however, despite lack of other targets. It is dismally easy to foresee the human invaders turning those guns against their native hosts, in the imperialistic tradition of the time.

This book earns Casanova's inner world a place beside Erewhon, Utopia, and the many lands that Gulliver traveled. It combines satire with wishful thinking to capture the spirit and thinking, not just of the author, but of his whole time.
