This is a wonderful book, the author assists you with questions to ask yourself, and gives you many options. A book you will use again and again when considering window treatments. I bought another book, 1001 and one ideas for windows, and it didn't compare at all to this book.

5 out of 5 stars The world's leading window decorating authority.......2006-03-22

An inspiring guide to window coverings featuring more than 600 photographs, Dream Windows, Historical Perspectives, Classic Designs, Contemporary Creations by Kathleen Stoehr is both unique and complete in its scope of window decorating ideas. Covering chapters such as shutters, curtains & draperies, combination treatments, shades and more, Stoehr shows the latest styles and colors for every room in the house. But that's not all: each chapter also touches on historical perspectives, facts about the products (such as advantages and disadvantages) cost, lifespan, care and cleaning, and most appropriate locations in the home.

"Good to Know" sidebars cover the intricacies of each products--such as a short discussion of wood versus faux wood products, types of fabrics, the differences between top treatments and more. A "Question Yourself" chapter will help you evaluate various aspects of window treatments (among them, qualities needed, time frame, design style) in order to make a thoughtful decision for your home.

The topic of motorization, as well as hiring an interior designer is addressed and a thorough glossary will help you with potentially unfamiliar terminology. But best of all is the glorious photography, provided from top interior designers and window treatment companies throughout the United States and abroad. Whether looking for designer window treatments or something out of the ordinary, you will find it in this complete guide to soft and hard window treatments.

A Light in the Window is the second installment in this enormously popular series about a small-town rector, Father Tim, and the heartwarming cast of characters surrounding him. This time Father Tim, a lifelong bachelor, finds his heart distracted by his free-spirited neighbor Cynthia, but his stomach and the rectory cash box are distracted by Edith, a wealthy widow who is wooing the rector with love potion casseroles. At every turn, including when a brooding Irish cousin decides to move in, Father Tim must decide whether he will practice what he preaches.

Fans of the series say they long to buy real estate in Mitford, just so they can live next door to these funny and endearing characters and feel the embrace of such a loving community. But what author Jan Karon probably knows, and many readers are starting to figure out, is that the integrity and solid Christian values that these characters possess can be found in just about every neighborhood, and with inspiration like this book, anyone can build their own Mitford community. --Gail Hudson

3 out of 5 stars A Light in the Window (The Mitford Years #2).......2007-05-17

Mr. John McDonough, who narrates all of the Jan Karon books on Mitford is extremely talented. His voice is clear and deep and can accommodate many characters. When I listened to the first Mitford book I believed Jan Karon and John McDonough were equally matched. The writing and narration was of the highest caliber. I believe that A Light In the Window was not as well written as At Home In Mitford, however McDonough was still an excellent reader. There were touching moments in Book #2. But it was obvious that Ms. Karon's first love was her first book and the second seemed a bit rushed as the characters were less three dimensional and at times repeated themselves. I would still recommend this book to those wanting a heartwarming story to keep them company as they perform daily tasks and fall asleep at night.

5 out of 5 stars Almost but not quite too nice.......2007-04-13

I read this immediately after finishing the first book in the Mitford series, and, although it was not quite as enjoyable as the first novel, it was still a rare pleasure. It is almost (but not quite) too nice. The story takes up where the first book left off; Father Tim is back from Ireland and bedeviled (perhaps a poor choice of verb on my part) by the same doubts and problems as before. There's what to do about the crude boy, Dooley; how does the priest feel about his neighbor; etc. And there are new problems: the wealthy and obnoxious widow who is intent upon seducing him; a "cousin" from Ireland who invades his home and takes advantage of his good nature; the forced closing of his favorite reastaurant haunt; the profane presence of the foreman at the job site of the new nursing home, etc. All in all, it is the usual stuff of small town life.

And there is a great deal of very announced and public praying for this and that and for various people. I found that slightly troubling. Jesus said that prayer was quite a private activity, to be done in "closet," i.e., private. Those who pray in public have their reward. Saying you will pray for someone has a haughty tone, a free way of putting the addressee under a vague obligation. Moreover, one is supposed to pray to put oneself and others attuned to God's plan, not alter God's plan for temporal reasons. But perhaps I am all wrong on that. Someone will surely put me aright--or think they have.

Again, I enjoyed my stay in Mitford very much. It's the Prairie Home Companion with grits. The plot is episodic, as one might guess from the previous comments. The characters are well drawn. The dialogue sounds right. And the atmosphere is comfortable. In fact, it is the atmosphere alone that makes it all worthwhile.

I was a bit troubled by a few lapses in writing, especially with pronouns that did not refer to the closest antecedent noun. In fact, I had to stop several times to try to figure out what was what.

I'm going to be so sad to have this series end. I hate to arrive at my destination because I know I will need to turn my car off. I bought my first CD at Costco only because I couln't find anything else I wanted to listen to. I was hooked after the 1st CD. This is Americana at it's best! Age is not a factor in this book. Sit back and enjoy!

I received the first in the Mitford series in August and before I was even halfway through the book, I went online to Amazon and ordered the whole series plus the cookbook. These are outstanding reading about everyday life and people. No sex, no violence, they are just super reading.

Book Description

Ten years ago, devastated by an ugly scandal, Brooke Martin fled the small town of Hayden to pursue a career as a stained glass artist. Now Brooke has returned on business to discover that some things never change. Her spotted reputation remains. Tongues still wag. And that makes what should be her dream assignment tough.

Brooke has been hired to design new stained glass windows at Hayden Bible Church. The job is a career windfall. But Nick Marcello is overseeing the project, and some in the church think Nick and Brooke’s relationship is not entirely professional--and as before, there is no convincing those people otherwise.

In the face of mounting rumors, the two set out to produce the masterpiece Nick has conceived: a brilliant set of windows displaying God’s covenants in the Bible. For Brooke, it is more than a project--it is a journey toward faith. But opposition is heating up. A vicious battle of words and will is about to tax Brooke’s commitment to the limit. Only this time, she is determined not to run.

4 out of 5 stars ok.......2007-01-10

This book was good, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed others of Terri Blackstock's. It was more predictable than her plot lines usually are.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it!!!!! : D.......2006-05-14

Eighteen year old Brooke Martin leaves her small town Hayden for seven years, after the principal's wife Abby Hemphill spreads rumors through the whole town in the newspapers about a new 24 year old art teacher's romance with his student.
None of this was true. Brooke was Nick's favorite student because she was very talented, and he was helping on her project several times outside of school, where Abby Hemphill saw them together, started this rumor, and fired Nick.
After seven years the pastor of Hayden's church hired her to design new stained glass windows for Hayden's Bible Church. When she comes she realizes that it was Nick's idea to hire her, and now she has to make a decision. If she takes the job she will let the rumors start all over again, and if not, this will be the second time Nick looses her job because of her.
I enjoyed this book a lot! And I highly recommend it to everyone!

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2006-01-07

The Publishers Weekly Review was exactly right on. Terri Blackstock is one of my favorite authors, but this book was completely unrealistic and therefore not enjoyable. And did anyone else notice that the characters "whispered" everything?! I would recommend Blackstock's other books, but definitely not this one.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting storyline - predictable but enjoyable.......2005-08-24

This is the first Terri Blackstock novel I've read. Not bad. I was intrigued by the promise of a storyline involving stained-glass window artists. (It's what made me buy the book in the first place.) While the story had some portions that were rather weak, I thought the plot moved quite steadily and managed to hold my interest. I also felt that I really got to know the characters well and it left me wanting to know about their individual futures. The Christian values and struggles were expressed in a meaningful way. I really liked the way Blackstock spoke the truth of Scripture through Nick's grandfather. I would definitely read another Blackstock novel!

5 out of 5 stars How amazing was this?.......2003-10-30

This is an awesome book. I read Terri Blackstock's "Newpointe 911" series and enjoyed it immensly, and I also read her "Cape Refuge" series and loved it. I thought she could never possibly write anything better. Well, she wrote Emerald Windows, which I just recently read and it was a whole new spin that was very enjoyable. I liked the romantic, yet real enough to believe story line, and I love her description of every aspect of the story!

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An OK Read.......2006-07-22

I am a great fan of Lawana Blackwell's other books, especially the the London & Gresham series. Carley and her relatives are more two-dimensional by comparison. I guess I was just unable to develop the same love for the characters in A Table by the Window. One reviewer compared them to those in the Mitford series, which is a far stretch. For those who have never read Ms. Blackwell's books, all other books by her are much better and definitely worth your time. For true fans, reading this one is worth your time, but it is not her best book by far.

5 out of 5 stars I so enjoyed this book!.......2005-12-25

I have to admit I have a soft spot in my heart for any book whose main character opens her own cafe or bookstore, as food & books are two are my favorite things in life! And, having worked in both restaurants & bookstores, the storylines bring back fond memories for me.

The characters in this book are just wonderful and remind me of Jan Karon's Mitford books. The mystery that adds the line of suspense throughout the book was done well. While the reader begins to know early on who is responsible for the "mystery" death(s), it only adds to the suspense at wondering when Carley, the main character, will begin to put the pieces together. And while it is much easier to make your characters either "good guys or bad guys", Ms. Blackwell gives all her characters depth & humanity, even the person responsible for the hit & run death that is the center of the mystery.

Carley's belief in God but many questions about why He allowed certain things to happen in her life will speak to many readers.

I would recommend this book highly!

5 out of 5 stars A suspenseful read set in the deep South..........2005-07-20

Lawana Blackwell did a fantastic job of creating a contemporary story in quaint Mississippi. Her character development was superb with the complexities of Carley's and Brooke's characters. Carley Reed is a teacher in California, living the life she fixed for herself after her unstable mother, Linda dies. She focuses on her teaching trying to forget her rough upbringing until one day a P.I. arrives, saying her grandmother has died and left her quite a sizable heritance. After being fired from the prestigious school, Carley decides to travel to Mississippi, to the little town of Tallulah to see her grandmother's estate for herself. After meeting the local people and seeing the quaintness of the small town life, Carley decides to stay and open a cafe. Then comes Brooke, a high-school dropout whom Carley takes under her wing after learning about Brooke's almost identitical rough start in life as Carley, herself. To add to the suspense in the story, there is a unsolved hit and run of the local pastor's wife and the murderer could be closer to Carley than she realized. Then there is Carley's refusal to attend church with other believers because of the horrific ordeal she has gone through with a "believer". Will Carley turn her heart back to God and trust His believers? Will the murderer be found before Carley finds herself in an even worse situation than ever before? I loved this story very much and I am so looking forward to Lawana's next contemporary book.

5 out of 5 stars Something new from a favorite author.......2005-06-02

I fell in love with Lawana Blackwell's characters and style with her Gresham Chronicles, and have enjoyed everything I've read since. A Table By The Window is something totally different from the Victorian England the author is so at home in. But I loved it. Her characters are skillfully drawn, flawed and real. Sometimes I lost track of the many family members flitting in and out of Carley Reed's life, but then, I often do that with my own relatives. I felt like a part of Carley's story, and as so many others noted, I couldn't help wishing I could spend more time in Tallulah, MS.

    1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2005-05-27

Open letter to Lawana Blackwell: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But that's what happened with Ms Blackwell's latest book, and it's a mess. Ms. Blackwell has produced an impressive body of work in the historical/romantic Christian fiction, and this is a departure. While I've found her past work compelling, interesting and complex, this latest edition (set in the current day)is -- in a word -- boring. In her past books I've found the heroines individuals that I was interested in and would root for; but for the antagonist in this book I couldn't muster an iota of sympathy or plain old interest. So my suggestion to Ms Blackwell is to return to what you know and have succeeded with. I had high hopes and great anticipation for this new read...and am very disappointed.

Light from a Nearby Window introduces a new generation of poets who have become a driving force in Mexican literature today.

Until quite recently, contemporary Mexican poetry has been little-known and virtually unavailable to English-speaking readers. This bilingual anthology includes twenty-one poets-twelve men and nine women-all of who have received national and international recognition. In poems about sexuality and spirituality, politics and marginalization, history and tradition, urban and rural life, they write about the unique experience of being Mexican at the end of the millennium.

Juvenal Acosta was born in Mexico City in 1961. He studied economics in Mexico City, and philosophy in Michoacan, where he lived, miraculously, as a poet. He is the author of the award-winning Diciendo unas palabras negras and Paper of Live Flesh. He lives in Berkeley, California.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars A Clean, Well-lighted Window.......2002-05-08

This much needed anthology of contemporary Mexican poetry, published back in 1993, offers English language readers a glimpse of some significant and interesting poets from Mexico. Editor Juvenal Acosta selected twenty-one poets for inclusion in this bilingual edition. As is inevitably the case, some will lament absences (personally, I wish Blanca Luz Pulido had been included) and others will wonder at some of the inclusions, but that is the nature of these collections. Overall, Acosta presents a balanced overview of contemporary verse from Mexico, focusing on those poets who are now (2002), in many cases, in their peak years of creativity. As the editor points out in his brief introduction, "In 'Light from a Nearby Window' I have tried to bring together poets who are not only some of the best in Mexico, but are also among my literary heroes. Many of them have been my companions, through their poems, during my elf-imposed exile in the United States." Many of the poets included here have continued to have success in terms of recognition from publishers and award givers, so time seems to be lending weight to Acosta's judgement and taste. For example, the youngest poet in the anthology, María Baranda, had published only two collections at the time this book came out; since then she has published four additional works.
Among those included, I feel a special affinity for the work of Antonio Deltoro, Isabel Quiñonez, and Ricardo Castillo. The former two are introspective and disquieting. Deltoro's "La casa vendida" is a minor stroke of genius. Ricardo Castillo's voice stands out for its irreverence and humor. His "Oda a las ganas" ("Ode to the urge") is delightful, evocative enough to just make you want to put down your book and take a big leak.
A brief note on the translations, which were provided by a group of eleven translators, some of whom are noted poets in their own right. Most are excellent and some are inspired; a few, unfortunately, are simply incompetent.

      4 out of 5 stars Contemporary Solutions.......2002-04-13

It's not always easy to find appropriate window treatments for contemporary interiors. This book offers lots of solutions in photos, with illustrated projects using simple basic sewing techniques.

If you're looking for fancy drapes for traditional homes, this probably isn't the book for you. But if you're young and want something with clean lines and easy sewing, you may find it just right.

3 out of 5 stars More of the same from Katrin Cargill.......2002-03-21

After being inspired by the author's Simple Curtains book, I decided to purchase this book. Unfortunately, there were no reviews, so I took a chance and purchased it anyway. While this book has great pictures, classifies different styles such as classic, country and contemporary and has easy to follow directions, I was disappointed that many of the styles and techniques had already been featured in Simple Curtains (scalloped curtains, gingham curtains, lots of tension wire and eyelets). I also think that the workbook style of Simple Curtains is more functional than the more "coffee table style" of Curtain Bible. If you already have Simple Curtains, don't bother buying this book.
